- 0:03college football and the CrossFit Games.
- 0:07They are screwing things up the exact same
- 0:10way.
- 0:11Let's talk about it next.
- 0:24It's lunch time.
- 0:25What's going on, everybody?
- 0:55You want me to record it for you?
- 0:56I can.
- 0:57No, no, I'll do it.
- 0:59I have some ideas,
- 1:01so I want to combine it together with
- 1:05something else.
- 1:06I just like giving you shit about it
- 1:08because you do it every single day and
- 1:09then every day you go,
- 1:10I really need to record that.
- 1:12So all my recording stuff is in my
- 1:13basement.
- 1:14I live my life upstairs, right?
- 1:16Like, so it's,
- 1:18it's not something that I think about.
- 1:20And when I think about it and I'm
- 1:22at my laptop,
- 1:22I don't have my mic to be able
- 1:24to do, you know, like, it's just,
- 1:28it's just inconvenient.
- 1:29But anyway.
- 1:33So,
- 1:33Phil the Pooper wants to know where your
- 1:35plaid is.
- 1:36So, like I told you earlier,
- 1:41Scott and I were texting back and forth
- 1:42after Savant just fucking laid into me,
- 1:45which was hilarious, by the way.
- 1:47I actually probably do own about six
- 1:48different flannel shirts or flannel print
- 1:50shirts.
- 1:50They're not actual flannel shirts,
- 1:51but it's not cold enough down here to
- 1:54warrant actual flannel.
- 1:56It's just not.
- 1:59Trish doesn't like rap.
- 2:01That's fine.
- 2:02That's our theme song.
- 2:03Sorry.
- 2:03Yeah, you don't have to.
- 2:05Mute us for thirty seconds.
- 2:08Be fine.
- 2:10That beat goes hard.
- 2:12Whatever that song is,
- 2:14I love how it starts off.
- 2:16It's awesome.
- 2:19I have a little riff to start today.
- 2:21So, I'm watching Siobhan.
- 2:24And because I do a daily show,
- 2:26like I can empathize with the man and
- 2:30doing a daily show.
- 2:32Mine is forty five minutes to an hour.
- 2:34His is two hours.
- 2:38How the hell how the hell he goes?
- 2:40And I'm just giving an average, right?
- 2:42Because sometimes it's our forty five.
- 2:44Sometimes it's two thirty.
- 2:46Sometimes, you know, whatever.
- 2:47Right.
- 2:47He's going three plus before.
- 2:50Right,
- 2:50but that's more the exception than the
- 2:52rule.
- 2:52But regardless,
- 2:53it has nothing to do with this story.
- 2:54Yeah.
- 2:56So I know going into today's show,
- 2:59his plan was to do the Dave Castro
- 3:01Week in Review interview.
- 3:02And when he opened it up and saw
- 3:04it was only five minutes long,
- 3:06he was shitting his pants because like now
- 3:09all the content that he had kind of
- 3:11like drummed up for the day to do
- 3:14his show is now down to nothing.
- 3:18And how does he make it stretch?
- 3:21Right.
- 3:22Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.
- 3:25Yep.
- 3:27And in no way am I comparing myself
- 3:29to him, but like,
- 3:30I know what it's like to do a
- 3:31daily show now.
- 3:33the chat people are like he's trying to
- 3:35stretch something and people are like
- 3:37let's move on let's move on and i'm
- 3:40thinking like shut the hell up man is
- 3:43trying to stretch this out he's trying to
- 3:47stretch this out and and then by the
- 3:50end of the show he's like well that's
- 3:52all i got for today and people are
- 3:53like don't go don't go can you make
- 3:56up your damn minds
- 4:01it's a bunch of four-year-olds it's
- 4:03ridiculous everybody is in the chat
- 4:07directing the man that's been doing this
- 4:09every day for four years or five years
- 4:12or whatever it is right telling him when
- 4:15to to move on when to go to
- 4:17the next subject when not to leave when
- 4:20to like what the hell i love the
- 4:24move on stuff because everybody's like
- 4:26move on move on to what
- 4:29What do you want me to move on
- 4:29to?
- 4:30I don't have anything to move on to.
- 4:31That's why we're still talking about this.
- 4:35Right.
- 4:35There's only so much to talk about, right?
- 4:37And we try to fill whatever little piece
- 4:41we can.
- 4:43And let's talk about the fact that he's
- 4:44not even home.
- 4:46No, he's on vacation.
- 4:49Still doing his show.
- 4:51Right.
- 4:51Y'all, leave the man alone.
- 4:53Jesus Christ.
- 4:55Jenny's got it.
- 4:56Spoiled children.
- 4:59One hundred percent.
- 5:00One hundred percent.
- 5:02Not even close.
- 5:03This is probably the piece that's going to
- 5:05piss people off, right?
- 5:08He had the balls to start a show
- 5:11and do this, right?
- 5:15That gives him like the advantage to do
- 5:18it the way he wants to do it.
- 5:20He put this together.
- 5:23Now,
- 5:23do you take constructive criticism at
- 5:26times?
- 5:26Sure you do.
- 5:28But nobody else started a freaking show.
- 5:32And not only has he started his own
- 5:34show,
- 5:34he's allowed other people to start shows
- 5:37on his channel with an existing audience.
- 5:41Gave them the keys.
- 5:45And then you sit in the chat and
- 5:47tell him what to do.
- 5:51The audacity.
- 5:54It is mind-boggling to me.
- 5:59That you can sit there and you didn't
- 6:01take the initiative to start your own
- 6:03show.
- 6:06He did.
- 6:07And then you tell him how to do
- 6:09it.
- 6:15I don't get that.
- 6:15I mean, I have gotten that here,
- 6:17but I don't get it as much as
- 6:19he does because I only go forty five
- 6:21minutes.
- 6:22Right.
- 6:23He goes two hours and it was I
- 6:25just sit there like.
- 6:27exactly spoiled children who have a show
- 6:31and a place to hang out and chat
- 6:32with their friends every day.
- 6:34And,
- 6:35and you're going to tell him how to
- 6:37run his show.
- 6:38And an entertaining show.
- 6:41It's not like he's just getting on there
- 6:43and just,
- 6:44he says whatever comes across his brain,
- 6:46like nine times out of ten.
- 6:48It doesn't matter if it runs across the
- 6:50front of his mind.
- 6:51He's just going to throw it out,
- 6:52throw it out there.
- 6:53Like he didn't much give a shit.
- 6:57Go Tigers.
- 6:58Oh, Yash.
- 6:59Yes, indeed.
- 7:01I haven't seen Yash in forever.
- 7:02No, sir.
- 7:04Meredith.
- 7:05Yeah, but Scott,
- 7:06you're doing this in addition to your
- 7:07regular nine to five.
- 7:08So give yourself some credit.
- 7:09This is your lunch break and you're
- 7:10dealing with technical difficulties,
- 7:12et cetera.
- 7:13Yeah,
- 7:14but I signed up for it and I'm
- 7:16cool with that.
- 7:18And you guys generally this chat that we
- 7:20have at lunch.
- 7:22This do not tell me how to run
- 7:25my show.
- 7:28But, man,
- 7:29the people in the Savant Chat feel like
- 7:30they're entitled to tell him how to run
- 7:33his show,
- 7:33and it absolutely boggles my mind.
- 7:38So we don't need to – those Tulane
- 7:44versus no-lane shirts are gold.
- 7:48I have not seen those.
- 7:49Oh, that is – that's crazy.
- 7:53That's outstanding.
- 7:54I am –
- 7:56I'm not a Tulane fan,
- 7:57even though they're right there in New
- 7:58Orleans.
- 7:59But if I'm pulling for a team,
- 8:00I'm definitely pulling for Tulane to pull
- 8:01the upset over Ole Miss.
- 8:02That's going to be a fantastic game to
- 8:04watch.
- 8:05Yeah.
- 8:07Dents,
- 8:08a couple of them have obvious mental
- 8:10illness.
- 8:12And now Trish is telling me what to
- 8:13do.
- 8:16Move on, Scott.
- 8:19So I started this off with like college
- 8:21football and CrossFit.
- 8:25are both making the same mistake.
- 8:28We've heard this whole debate all week,
- 8:29if you follow sports at all,
- 8:31that the college football playoff did not
- 8:33get the twelve best teams into the college
- 8:35football playoff.
- 8:37And the reason that is,
- 8:38is because they had to make a deal
- 8:41to get everybody to sign off on a
- 8:44college football playoff and go away from
- 8:47the bowl system that existed.
- 8:49And to do that,
- 8:52you had to get the sign-off from the
- 8:54smaller,
- 8:55they call them like group of five schools
- 8:57or something like that.
- 8:58Group four.
- 8:59I don't even know what that means.
- 9:00No, there's a power four.
- 9:01Yeah.
- 9:03And then you have the group of five,
- 9:04which are like the Sunbelt Conference and
- 9:07the ones that aren't.
- 9:09The AAC, the SWAG, yeah, whatever.
- 9:11Yeah.
- 9:11Well,
- 9:11because of that and the deal they made,
- 9:14we have James Madison and Tulane in the
- 9:18college football playoff,
- 9:19and they're not one of the twelve best
- 9:22schools in the country.
- 9:26Right.
- 9:27Arguably,
- 9:28I would put Tulane over James Madison,
- 9:31but...
- 9:32But Tulane lost to Ole Miss by thirty-five
- 9:34points already this year,
- 9:35and now they've got to play them again?
- 9:37Like, come on.
- 9:38Mm-hmm.
- 9:39James Madison, so this is,
- 9:41I know way more about James Madison than
- 9:43I probably should because the last wedding
- 9:47I was a part of,
- 9:48I was the best man for one of
- 9:49my best friends.
- 9:51The day he got married,
- 9:52we're up in the hotel room getting ready
- 9:54and whatnot.
- 9:55And the only football game on TV was
- 9:58whatever conference championship was going
- 10:01on at the time James Madison was playing
- 10:03in and was winning.
- 10:06And they have a winning program.
- 10:08Like, for whatever division they're in,
- 10:10whatever, Division II or whatever.
- 10:12I don't remember.
- 10:13I just remember that it was on.
- 10:15So, like,
- 10:15we've been keeping up with them ever since
- 10:16because it was on Tony's wedding day that
- 10:18we happened to see it.
- 10:20And so, like,
- 10:20when I saw that they were possibly going
- 10:23to make it into the college football
- 10:25playoffs, I'm like, this is amazing.
- 10:27This is James Madison that we've been
- 10:29following forever.
- 10:30No, I understand that.
- 10:31I know what you're saying.
- 10:32I'm not disagreeing with you on that
- 10:34particular fact.
- 10:35I'm just saying that I know way more
- 10:36about them than I should.
- 10:38My team sucked this year.
- 10:39I have no rooting interest on anybody.
- 10:41So what I want to see is the
- 10:42best twelve go at it for the national
- 10:45championship.
- 10:45The best games possible.
- 10:47Because I don't care about any of these
- 10:49teams, right?
- 10:51What we do in CrossFit is the same
- 10:53damn thing.
- 10:55There's this thing where we don't have the
- 10:58forty best or thirty best now going to
- 11:02the CrossFit Games because we want to
- 11:05include Africa and we want to include
- 11:09South America and we want to include Asia.
- 11:13Now,
- 11:14Asia is starting to develop where their
- 11:15women are actually competitive with the
- 11:18rest of the world.
- 11:19And then that is the way it should
- 11:21work out.
- 11:21You should strive to be something better,
- 11:23right?
- 11:25But because we were trying to appease the
- 11:28world and the globalness of CrossFit,
- 11:31we want to be inclusive and let everybody
- 11:34into the games.
- 11:35And when you do that,
- 11:37just like in the college football playoff,
- 11:39you don't get the best athletes at the
- 11:43venue at the same time, right?
- 11:45So we have thirty people coming to the
- 11:47games,
- 11:48but they're not the thirty best athletes
- 11:50in the world.
- 11:51They're not necessarily the third best
- 11:53athletes in the world.
- 11:53No, you're absolutely right.
- 11:55As long as you are not the third
- 11:57best athletes.
- 11:58As long as you are forcing the hand
- 12:02from places like, sorry to say it,
- 12:05South Africa, some places in Brazil,
- 12:08South America,
- 12:09whatever you want to call it, then yeah.
- 12:10As long as you keep forcing those guys
- 12:12in there, then no,
- 12:13you're not getting the top,
- 12:14the top three guys on the,
- 12:15on the top three females on the planet.
- 12:17You're just not.
- 12:18You're getting the top people from those
- 12:21competitions,
- 12:23like from those particular semifinals,
- 12:24but that doesn't mean they're the top
- 12:26thirty in the world.
- 12:26No, absolutely not.
- 12:29So I'm going to extrapolate that to what
- 12:33Dave said in his week in review,
- 12:36which was super, super short.
- 12:38is that the Masters and the Teens and
- 12:41the Adaptive are going to be at the
- 12:42CrossFit Games,
- 12:44and it's probably not going to be that
- 12:45way going forward.
- 12:47It's probably just for the twentieth
- 12:48anniversary.
- 12:51Again,
- 12:52I think that there is this thing in
- 12:55CrossFit that they want to go global with
- 12:58the games,
- 13:00and because to go global they have to
- 13:02be smaller and move,
- 13:06I think they are missing out on getting
- 13:09the best event possible with a festival
- 13:14feel every year at the games.
- 13:19They are foregoing the best event to be
- 13:22able to go global.
- 13:26I think that's a myth.
- 13:28I think you're right,
- 13:30and I think that's a myth.
- 13:32Why not just put on the best event
- 13:34you possibly can?
- 13:36Let people that are going to bitch,
- 13:37bitch because they're going to bitch no
- 13:40matter what happens, right?
- 13:41And what is the effect of them bitching?
- 13:43What's the net event or net sum,
- 13:47whatever you want to call it,
- 13:49of them bitching?
- 13:50Just that they're mad about it on social
- 13:52media?
- 13:53Okay, who cares?
- 13:54Move on.
- 13:55If you know you're putting out the
- 13:57absolute best product and the best show
- 13:59that you possibly could on where
- 14:01Maybe not every race matters because not
- 14:03everyone's going to just because of how
- 14:05they're laid out.
- 14:05But as long as the vast majority of
- 14:07them where every heat matters,
- 14:10God help me,
- 14:11I'm going to go ahead and quote it,
- 14:12every second counts,
- 14:14then that's going to take – the other
- 14:17parts are going to take care of
- 14:18themselves.
- 14:18You know what I mean?
- 14:20If you put out the best product you
- 14:22possibly can,
- 14:22people are going to come to it no
- 14:24matter what it is.
- 14:26And the haters are going to hate,
- 14:27and they're going to fall off,
- 14:28and nobody's going to care.
- 14:31So let's go back to let's go back
- 14:34to the two thousand nine games when we
- 14:37first went to the Home Depot Center,
- 14:40StubHub Center, whatever, you know,
- 14:44looking back,
- 14:45the people CrossFit have said they tried
- 14:47to expand.
- 14:47They expanded too soon.
- 14:49Right.
- 14:50They got too big because something
- 14:53probably had to do with Reebok money.
- 14:55They had the money to do it.
- 14:56They grew.
- 14:57And then and then it did actually start
- 14:59taking off.
- 15:01But I think that that's what we're doing
- 15:02again with this global thought of going
- 15:05over to Europe or going to Australia for
- 15:07the CrossFit Games is we're not ready.
- 15:11We haven't figured it out yet.
- 15:15Why are we pushing to move overseas until
- 15:18we get it right?
- 15:22We had low attendance at the CrossFit
- 15:25Games last year.
- 15:27There are a million factors why that could
- 15:29have been.
- 15:30The vibes were cool.
- 15:32Everybody had a good time.
- 15:33But truth be told, tons of empty seats.
- 15:36Right.
- 15:38Shouldn't we figure that shit out first
- 15:41before we worry about going overseas?
- 15:43And I think the first solution to that
- 15:45is having four hundred Masters athletes
- 15:49come in with their families for the same
- 15:51week and are probably going to be bored
- 15:54and buy tickets.
- 15:56I am super curious.
- 16:00I can't wait to have tickets go on
- 16:01sale and to see what that ends up
- 16:04looking like from the reason you just
- 16:07said,
- 16:07just because we're all going to be in
- 16:08the same place.
- 16:10Masters, teens, adaptive, elite,
- 16:13everybody's in the same spot.
- 16:15So let's see what that does for ticket
- 16:17sales for the main show, right?
- 16:19I have no illusions.
- 16:21People are going there for the main show.
- 16:23But the people like me who could
- 16:25potentially be there,
- 16:27to compete if I make the games and
- 16:31they're all in the same week I'm staying
- 16:32and watching the games I've never been so
- 16:35like what better time for me to stay
- 16:37and watch the rest of them is if
- 16:39I happen to be right there already why
- 16:42wouldn't I stay like it goes from being
- 16:46a five day I gotta what I gotta
- 16:47do add four days to my Airbnb or
- 16:49three days to my Airbnb it's really not
- 16:51that that much and just change a change
- 16:53of flight gotta pay for some more food
- 16:55Truth be told,
- 16:57I booked my hotel for Wednesday through
- 16:59Monday.
- 16:59I only have to really go a day
- 17:02or two more.
- 17:03That's what I'm saying.
- 17:05That's a week vacation.
- 17:06That's a vacation time I would take
- 17:08anyway.
- 17:11Um,
- 17:11there's a lot of people who disagree with
- 17:13me.
- 17:14Uh, so, uh, Kevin Doyle,
- 17:15they want to maintain all the, um,
- 17:17affiliates in Asia.
- 17:19If no Asian athletes make it to the
- 17:20games,
- 17:20could that affect the amount of affiliates
- 17:22in those regions?
- 17:23I don't think they have a problem with
- 17:25Asia.
- 17:25I think the Asian women are getting strong
- 17:28enough where they can compete with the
- 17:30European women and the Australian women.
- 17:33And I think that they're going to make
- 17:34it regardless.
- 17:36Um, Sean Young Choi and John Young, um,
- 17:40are, um,
- 17:41getting as good as anybody in Europe.
- 17:45And if it's going anywhere qualified out
- 17:48of Europe last year, not Asia.
- 17:51And if you're going anywhere,
- 17:52you're going to Europe before you go into
- 17:53Asia.
- 17:58I mean,
- 17:59attendance is going to be higher
- 18:00internationally, but I think that,
- 18:02you know,
- 18:02with all due respect and I get it
- 18:04that there isn't as many big events in
- 18:07Europe.
- 18:08So if you take it over there for
- 18:10the,
- 18:12Immediate return,
- 18:13there will be a higher attendance,
- 18:14I believe.
- 18:15You're right.
- 18:16But is it disguising the problem that we
- 18:19have about attracting people all of the
- 18:21time?
- 18:23And I think that is the biggest issue.
- 18:26We have not figured out how to put
- 18:27this thing together to attract the most
- 18:29people at the same time.
- 18:32No.
- 18:34And that has to be figured out.
- 18:43I do think you're right.
- 18:45But Rogue Year One sold way more tickets
- 18:47than Rogue Year Two.
- 18:50Because it was the first time a major
- 18:52competition went to Europe.
- 18:54The first year it sold out quickly.
- 18:56Second year,
- 18:57there were still seats available right up
- 18:59until game time.
- 19:01The novelty wears off after the first
- 19:02year.
- 19:07European and Australian events are very
- 19:08well attended because the games are not
- 19:11there.
- 19:12Because the European semifinals are their
- 19:16big event.
- 19:17The Australian semifinal is the big event.
- 19:21That's why they draw.
- 19:22Yeah, that's what makes it a big deal.
- 19:30And Frida, who's European as well,
- 19:34logistics would be a nightmare.
- 19:37And then you're talking the overhead of
- 19:40that logistical nightmare on top of
- 19:44everything else.
- 19:46I mean,
- 19:46you saw that interview with Katie just
- 19:48talking about the stuff that they have
- 19:49to...
- 19:50They can pull from their warehouse over
- 19:52there,
- 19:52but they also have to ship across the
- 19:53freaking ocean.
- 19:55It's a lot.
- 19:57And they have to make sure it gets
- 19:58there.
- 19:59Correct.
- 19:59Which is also a logistical nightmare.
- 20:01Ships to dock.
- 20:03Yeah.
- 20:04It's not a team of wheelers driving on...
- 20:06You know,
- 20:06public highways in America is a ship at
- 20:09sea getting across the freaking ocean.
- 20:12Customs.
- 20:14I mean, the list goes on and on.
- 20:17Did the games ever have a problem with
- 20:18attendance before twenty twenty four?
- 20:21They really didn't.
- 20:23They they sold out every year until twenty
- 20:27twenty four.
- 20:29And twenty twenty four was pretty packed,
- 20:30even with what happened.
- 20:33I would say people were excited.
- 20:38I say excited,
- 20:39probably mixed bag as far as emotions are
- 20:40concerned, but moving from Madison,
- 20:42going to Texas.
- 20:45But it was still, like you said,
- 20:48tickets were very hard to come by right
- 20:49up until the first event.
- 20:53The biggest indicator about Texas is the
- 20:56night in the football stadium had like
- 20:58sixteen thousand people.
- 21:00That is the biggest crowd to watch a
- 21:02CrossFit event ever.
- 21:04And they were running.
- 21:06Right.
- 21:11But it was a very cool event and
- 21:12it was free to the public.
- 21:15So you got people to come in,
- 21:17but there were sixteen thousand people
- 21:18there that wanted to see it.
- 21:19It's a lot.
- 21:24Mark Phillips is adding in local laws,
- 21:26et cetera.
- 21:26It's not an easy thing, right?
- 21:29And I'm not saying never go to Europe.
- 21:32I'm saying get your damn ducks in a
- 21:34row before you do it.
- 21:36It's almost as if you wanted to put
- 21:38the horse in front of the court and
- 21:40not the other way around.
- 21:43I don't disagree whatsoever.
- 21:45Like get your shit together and make sure
- 21:47that what you have is what you actually
- 21:49want to have,
- 21:50which you need to know what you want
- 21:51to have before you can do that.
- 21:53Look at it, have it, have every,
- 21:57you know, all the pieces in place.
- 21:59And this year is probably not going to
- 22:00be a good indicator because this year is
- 22:02a twenty year anniversary and they're
- 22:03going back to California.
- 22:04And, you know,
- 22:06I'm saying and we're doing the festival
- 22:07feel like all these people are going to
- 22:09be back in the same in the same
- 22:10spot.
- 22:11And this is going to be an outlier
- 22:12year as far as attendance from what I
- 22:15can see or from, you know,
- 22:17from what they're talking about just
- 22:19because of that.
- 22:20because everything's going to be in the
- 22:22same place.
- 22:22Everybody's going to be in the same place,
- 22:24right?
- 22:24That novelty.
- 22:26I made the,
- 22:27I went to the year anniversary of the
- 22:29games.
- 22:29It was awesome.
- 22:31The year after that is really going to
- 22:34be a litmus test to see like,
- 22:36especially if they're putting us all back,
- 22:38you know,
- 22:38putting Pitt at the Pitt,
- 22:40putting us back in Columbus or wherever
- 22:42they're going to put us at.
- 22:44That's really going to be your test.
- 22:46Period.
- 22:47Of people having to choose,
- 22:49am I going to Pitt?
- 22:51Am I going to Columbus?
- 22:53Am I going to Vegas?
- 22:56Or am I going to the games?
- 22:58Because people aren't going to go to all
- 23:00of them.
- 23:01No.
- 23:02But when you put them all together,
- 23:04everybody convenes in one area.
- 23:07And then you have this big festival feel
- 23:09with a much better attendance.
- 23:12That has to be figured out.
- 23:14And I think it's short-sighted to say it's
- 23:16not going to happen again.
- 23:18You can still let the other,
- 23:19and if just do it in the same
- 23:21city,
- 23:22it doesn't need to be in the same
- 23:24arena.
- 23:25Just do it in the same city in
- 23:27the same week.
- 23:28And you're just drawing everybody to the
- 23:30same area to do things.
- 23:33Well, that's the other thing,
- 23:34and it just don't annoy me about the
- 23:35people that, you know, not complain,
- 23:38but just point out the fact that a
- 23:40lot of these events are very well
- 23:41attended.
- 23:41Well, there's a shit ton of them.
- 23:45This year alone,
- 23:46there's going to be in the U.S.,
- 23:47there's going to be Legends,
- 23:48there's going to be Mayhem,
- 23:49there's going to be Knoxville.
- 23:56Syndicate Crown.
- 23:57Syndicate Crown, right?
- 24:00Northern California Classic.
- 24:02That's just semifinals.
- 24:04That's not also PFX and Waterpalooza and
- 24:08whatnot that people are going to go to
- 24:11compete at, go to watch.
- 24:14And then there's the games.
- 24:15And then there's all these other mid to
- 24:19higher tier events that people can go and
- 24:21either compete at or the Heart of America,
- 24:26the Monster Games, MFC,
- 24:30like
- 24:32Yeah,
- 24:33you wonder why people don't – their
- 24:35attendance is down is because everybody's
- 24:37not made of money.
- 24:38Like I can't go to all of these
- 24:39things.
- 24:40I would love to be able to,
- 24:42but it's hard to attend when there's forty
- 24:45different things going on and you have to
- 24:46kind of pick and choose.
- 24:49I would love to be able to give
- 24:50the games my money every single year,
- 24:52but if I'm also going to compete and
- 24:53get a competition experience to go
- 24:55somewhere else,
- 24:56then what's going to end up suffering is
- 24:58me being able to go to the games
- 24:59in person.
- 25:01Lito, selfishly,
- 25:02I'm hoping it doesn't sell out immediately
- 25:04because if I qualify in May and go
- 25:06all the way to Cali but can't get
- 25:08into the arena to watch the elites,
- 25:10I'll be very upset.
- 25:11Well, I hope that that's not true, Lito,
- 25:14because if it sells out,
- 25:16it only means good things for you as
- 25:18an athlete, as a master's athlete.
- 25:21It's going to trickle down.
- 25:23The success of that is going to trickle
- 25:25down.
- 25:26You want that to happen.
- 25:30I think what she's saying is that she's
- 25:32not buying tickets for the games until she
- 25:35knows that she's qualifying.
- 25:37And if it doesn't sell out, then...
- 25:38I'm just telling you.
- 25:42It may sell out,
- 25:42but people sell tickets right up in the
- 25:45games.
- 25:45You can get it.
- 25:49And Jenny says, Lito, no.
- 25:54Denise,
- 25:55even if I don't qualify for the games,
- 25:57I believe I will be attending to spectate.
- 26:01Uh, Shanna Lito in the past,
- 26:02they've held back tickets for athletes to
- 26:04buy.
- 26:05That is a great point as well.
- 26:07And that's cool, right?
- 26:09That that's awesome for them to be that
- 26:12thoughtful or aware of it and say, Hey,
- 26:14we're going to hold off,
- 26:16keep some of these tickets back just for
- 26:17in case people, you know, other athletes,
- 26:19masters, athletes, teams,
- 26:20whoever want to buy them.
- 26:22That's fantastic.
- 26:25Frida,
- 26:25that should be a part of your registration
- 26:26as a master.
- 26:27I do believe they do hold back tickets
- 26:29for you to purchase.
- 26:32Jenny, Dickie sold out in like two hours.
- 26:34I don't think SAP will sell out,
- 26:36but I hope it does with all the
- 26:38OG California CrossFitters.
- 26:40I hope it does too.
- 26:42I think just with everybody there,
- 26:44people are going to plan for that week.
- 26:45And I think you're going to see a
- 26:48much more significant purchase of tickets
- 26:52than you did in Albany, New York.
- 26:55Yeah, I would agree to that.
- 26:59George says SAP holds seventeen plus.
- 27:03It ain't selling out.
- 27:04Oh,
- 27:04you don't know what the configuration of
- 27:05the seats are.
- 27:08So we'll have to wait and see exactly
- 27:09what the number is.
- 27:10But you know what?
- 27:12I hope it does.
- 27:14If they sell out seventeen thousand
- 27:15tickets, we're getting into a good place.
- 27:19They sell seventeen thousand tickets.
- 27:21They don't look to get it again next
- 27:22year because that to them,
- 27:23that's going to say this is the spot
- 27:25to have it.
- 27:26Right.
- 27:27If it's that plus everything runs smoothly
- 27:29and the events look nice.
- 27:31I think as long as you put it
- 27:33in a place where there's stuff to do,
- 27:37Albany had nothing to do.
- 27:39Right.
- 27:40Nothing to do in Albany.
- 27:42So if you were going,
- 27:43you were just going there for the games.
- 27:45I have talked to my wife about if
- 27:47we go out to California,
- 27:48maybe we go to Sonoma or we go
- 27:51to wine country or whatever and do some
- 27:53things a little bit that week.
- 27:55I think that would be super cool.
- 27:57And so we're planning it as if I
- 27:59go or when I go this year,
- 28:02it'd be more of a vacation for us
- 28:04than just me doing the media thing.
- 28:06Absolutely.
- 28:09I mean,
- 28:09you could go talk to homeless people in
- 28:11Albany.
- 28:13Hiller did.
- 28:14There's homeless people everywhere, dude.
- 28:16I know,
- 28:16but Hiller actually stopped and
- 28:18interviewed him.
- 28:18That was fantastic.
- 28:22Shannon,
- 28:23it would be fun if we could buy
- 28:24out a Clydesdale section and sit together.
- 28:26That would be awesome.
- 28:30Madison was fifteen and sold out.
- 28:36Yeah.
- 28:40Yeah, Ken, Madison, twenty-two sold out,
- 28:42too, when we went.
- 28:43Madison was always, like,
- 28:45the stands were full.
- 28:48All the years I was there,
- 28:50it was full in the arena.
- 28:53Even twenty-one, right after COVID,
- 28:56it was packed.
- 28:58It may not have sold out,
- 29:00but it was pretty damn full.
- 29:02Twenty-two,
- 29:03it was all the way to the ceiling.
- 29:05Gotta love it.
- 29:10I love it.
- 29:11I want to go eventually,
- 29:12but the priorities first.
- 29:19If they sell nine K they'll configure to
- 29:21sell more.
- 29:22I hope it sells out based on my
- 29:23Jim's interest.
- 29:24I'm not seeing it.
- 29:26Yeah.
- 29:27That's a micro look at things.
- 29:33We need to see the macro.
- 29:36Yeah, because based on my gyms as well,
- 29:39like, I can think of three people,
- 29:41four people that would want to go from
- 29:43my gym.
- 29:43Maybe more than that,
- 29:45if you actually ask them, like,
- 29:46talk to them about, hey,
- 29:47we're all going to the games,
- 29:48and y'all want to come, like,
- 29:49make it a group trip.
- 29:50Oh, yeah, fuck yeah.
- 29:52But as of, like,
- 29:53if I just went in there today,
- 29:54right now at lunchtime, be like,
- 29:56who wants to go to the CrossFit Games?
- 29:58And people would be like, the what?
- 30:00Never mind.
- 30:01If you qualified for the games,
- 30:04that interest would go up.
- 30:06Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 30:07And we don't even know that yet.
- 30:08We don't know who's going.
- 30:11That's the part that you have to wait
- 30:13and kind of see to judge.
- 30:16If I qualified, I can think of one,
- 30:20two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,
- 30:22nine,
- 30:23probably fifteen people off the top of my
- 30:24head that would go from my gym.
- 30:27Just to come watch me.
- 30:30And that's the piece you don't know.
- 30:34Yeah.
- 30:34I'm going to share my screen.
- 30:36We talked about this...
- 30:39Gosh, two weeks ago and into this week,
- 30:44Ethan Bernard went to Mayhem,
- 30:48did a CrossFit workout.
- 30:49CrossFit was there to tape it,
- 30:53and they put it out yesterday.
- 30:55I watched it right after the show
- 30:56yesterday.
- 30:58I will say, for me,
- 31:02it was very emotional for me to watch
- 31:03this.
- 31:05As someone who walked into a CrossFit gym
- 31:06over five hundred pounds and the care and
- 31:10the love and the support that my affiliate
- 31:12gave me to watch what they did with
- 31:14this guy was amazing.
- 31:19I sobbed like a baby at the beginning
- 31:21of this video.
- 31:22I'm not going to show any of it
- 31:23and do that on the air today.
- 31:27it was like looking in a mirror for
- 31:29me at very much what happened in for
- 31:32me you got except you got way better
- 31:35hair god bless that kid he needs a
- 31:37brush um
- 31:41And then there was a part in here
- 31:44that really hit me that I didn't even
- 31:46know was coming.
- 31:47And that is they asked him about,
- 31:49you know,
- 31:49he's done this very publicly and he's
- 31:51gained a ton of followers on Instagram and
- 31:55YouTube.
- 31:56And they asked him what it was like
- 31:58being an influencer going through all this
- 32:00thing.
- 32:01And he was talking about the added stress
- 32:03that that adds.
- 32:04Yeah.
- 32:05A lot of people have asked me why
- 32:06I don't do the weight loss show anymore
- 32:08because
- 32:08And that's really a big reason why.
- 32:11The additional stress it gave me was not
- 32:13the accountability I needed to be
- 32:15successful.
- 32:18And it got to a point where it
- 32:21was more than I could handle in the
- 32:23state that I was in.
- 32:26And so when he talks about that,
- 32:30I'm rooting for him and I hope that
- 32:31he can get through this and that that
- 32:34doesn't bring him down at any point.
- 32:37But the internet can be cruel.
- 32:40And but his story is awesome.
- 32:43He's already lost two hundred pounds.
- 32:46He started at six sixty.
- 32:47He's at four fifty seven, I believe.
- 32:54it's a really cool story and i loved
- 32:56the way they showed how josh malone from
- 33:01mayhem he how he doesn't like to use
- 33:05the word scaled because it means less than
- 33:07that he modifies the workout for him to
- 33:11um do the same stimulus and they showed
- 33:13how they did that
- 33:15And what was freaky is the same techniques
- 33:19that were used with me on my first
- 33:21workout were used with him in this
- 33:23workout.
- 33:24And it was really cool to kind of
- 33:26see that.
- 33:27It was eerie to see the squats on
- 33:31a box, the pushups on a barbell,
- 33:35on the rack,
- 33:36all the same stuff that was done with
- 33:38me.
- 33:38It was really, really crazy.
- 33:41I love it.
- 33:43Absolutely.
- 33:43It's almost as if
- 33:45CrossFit is infinitely modifiable,
- 33:49scalable to your ability level.
- 33:53Such a weird concept.
- 33:57Lito asks,
- 33:57do we think he continues to do CrossFit?
- 34:01He has a personal trainer that he is
- 34:04being successful with.
- 34:06Do I think that this experience gives him
- 34:11more tools in the tool belt?
- 34:13Maybe.
- 34:15Do I think he ends up joining an
- 34:16affiliate?
- 34:19I don't see that happening.
- 34:22I would have to go watch the whole
- 34:23thing.
- 34:23I just saw a clip yesterday.
- 34:24I didn't watch the video on CrossFit's
- 34:27YouTube.
- 34:28When he talks about how he works with
- 34:30his personal trainer and they do circuits,
- 34:33none of them were as intense as what
- 34:34he experienced in this hour in the gym.
- 34:36Never going to be.
- 34:40But like when you have a relationship with
- 34:42a personal coach and you've been
- 34:45successful,
- 34:47I don't see him just like ditching that
- 34:50to all of a sudden jump to CrossFit.
- 34:53But I could be wrong.
- 34:59I hope I'll put it to you like
- 35:01this.
- 35:02If it's working for him,
- 35:05then whatever it is, I hope,
- 35:06I just hope he sticks to it because
- 35:08his life is worth saving.
- 35:10And if it's worth taking, you know,
- 35:11taking his life into his own hands to
- 35:13save, to save his own life,
- 35:14because that's what he's doing.
- 35:16Same thing you do.
- 35:17And who am I, you know,
- 35:19as long as he's moving and doing,
- 35:21moving well and doing,
- 35:24and doing it in a,
- 35:25in a way that is successful, why,
- 35:27why would we want him to change?
- 35:30but I do believe that like going into
- 35:33a CrossFit and,
- 35:34and the learning tools that he got from
- 35:37that experience,
- 35:38he may take back to his personal trainer.
- 35:40They may talk about things about how it
- 35:42was different in these ways.
- 35:43And maybe they incorporate that into what
- 35:46he's doing.
- 35:47And maybe that does lead down the road
- 35:49into something in,
- 35:51into CrossFit as a maintenance piece or
- 35:53whatever, but.
- 35:54Even just one day, dude, one,
- 35:56and I know you,
- 35:58I'm preaching to the choir here,
- 36:00but if you just take one class with
- 36:05a good coach,
- 36:07it doesn't matter what the workout is.
- 36:09One class with a good coach,
- 36:11especially if you're somewhere like Mayhem
- 36:13that's got a good environment around you,
- 36:15not just a bunch of people who are
- 36:16just going to look at you sideways and
- 36:17wonder why you're in here,
- 36:20and you decide never to go again,
- 36:22you're never going to forget it.
- 36:25Right.
- 36:25If you get it,
- 36:26you go in there with good intentions and
- 36:28whatnot, you're never going to forget it.
- 36:29You're going to take something away from
- 36:30it, no matter what it is.
- 36:32You got to take something away like,
- 36:33holy shit, that was hard.
- 36:35Or man, that was awesome.
- 36:36I want to do that again.
- 36:38Or I learned, you know, Hey,
- 36:40I am more capable than I thought I
- 36:42was.
- 36:42I just, you know, at what you said,
- 36:45he lost two hundred twenty.
- 36:46So he's at like four eighty right now,
- 36:47something like that.
- 36:48Just just to just over two hundred.
- 36:51He's like at four fifty seven.
- 36:52Yeah.
- 36:54Even at four hundred and fifty seven
- 36:56pounds or whatever,
- 36:56I could do a CrossFit class.
- 36:59Right.
- 37:00No matter what kind of craziness I've
- 37:02heard about here, there or yonder,
- 37:04all that's going to stick with you for
- 37:06the long run.
- 37:08So even if he doesn't come back to
- 37:10CrossFit,
- 37:10if he just stays working as a personal
- 37:11trainer, good for him.
- 37:13That's amazing.
- 37:15Lito, that's what I thought too, Scott.
- 37:17Great video though.
- 37:19Ken Walters,
- 37:20they shouldn't be saying scaled is less
- 37:21than,
- 37:21but what Corey just said is how they
- 37:23should promote what he's doing.
- 37:25This was Josh off to the side talking
- 37:27to the documentary people saying that he
- 37:30doesn't like to use the word scaled.
- 37:32He likes to use modified because some
- 37:35people feel scaled is less than.
- 37:37It wasn't like he was saying being scaled
- 37:40is less than.
- 37:41explaining why his word choice is the way
- 37:44it is.
- 37:46And, and it's, it's,
- 37:48you have to be careful with word choices
- 37:51when you're talking to someone who is
- 37:53going through the emotional rollercoaster
- 37:56of a massive weight loss.
- 37:58So I'm going to tell you from experience
- 38:00and just coaching a good coach,
- 38:03which I think of myself as a pretty
- 38:04good coach.
- 38:06You learn how to talk to people.
- 38:08And by how to talk to people,
- 38:09I mean I know how to talk to
- 38:11Scott versus how to talk to Kat.
- 38:14What motivates Kat versus what's going to
- 38:16get Scott moving.
- 38:18How to approach – like I got people
- 38:20that I know I have to –
- 38:23Treat with kid gloves for all intents and
- 38:25purposes.
- 38:26I know the people that I can tell,
- 38:27hey, quit being a pussy and let's go.
- 38:30And that comes with experience, obviously,
- 38:31and being able to read people a little
- 38:33bit.
- 38:33But I know people that would get offended
- 38:36if I tell them,
- 38:37let's scale it to this as opposed to,
- 38:39okay, if you can't do this,
- 38:40let's modify it to this.
- 38:43You have to know that kind of stuff.
- 38:44You have to know your members that way
- 38:48because if not,
- 38:49then they're either not going to come back
- 38:51or they're just not going to attend your
- 38:52class in general because they don't want
- 38:55to have to deal with you as a
- 38:56person.
- 38:59Kudos to him for knowing that and saying
- 39:01it out loud because I think a lot
- 39:03of us coaches know that kind of stuff,
- 39:07but we don't necessarily put it out there
- 39:08unless we're talking to another coach.
- 39:11And, and I kind of had, and again,
- 39:14very similar experience, you know,
- 39:17weight loss has been a struggle for me
- 39:19my entire life after I retired from
- 39:21swimming.
- 39:22And that is that I started with my
- 39:25trainer, my, he was a CrossFit trainer,
- 39:28but I started with him independently at my
- 39:32home first, almost what,
- 39:34five months before I walked into a gym.
- 39:37So we build a relationship before I walked
- 39:40into the gym.
- 39:41When you weigh what Ethan and I weigh,
- 39:47you do have to be treated with kid
- 39:50gloves in a way to make it so
- 39:53you believe that you can be successful.
- 39:57And that's what my coach, his coach,
- 40:01have been doing.
- 40:01In goodness.
- 40:05Right.
- 40:06And more choices are very,
- 40:07very important in that.
- 40:09Ken Welchers,
- 40:10it took me two classes with a great
- 40:11trainer.
- 40:12Here we are nine years later.
- 40:13Incredible what that decision has done.
- 40:17Amen, brother.
- 40:18Amen to that.
- 40:20so last thing I wanted to talk about
- 40:22and probably aren't going to have enough
- 40:23time to, to dive into it too much,
- 40:26but I was watching Monday night CrossFit
- 40:28last night with and John,
- 40:32and they did a thing where Claire assigned
- 40:37wrestling personas to CJ and John and
- 40:41herself.
- 40:44And like John was the oval teen overlord
- 40:47and, um,
- 40:51And his finishing move was the analyzer or
- 40:56something like that,
- 40:57which was similar to a Goldberg spear.
- 41:02Gotcha.
- 41:03I could definitely see John spearing
- 41:04somebody.
- 41:06And CJ was Dr. Durable and
- 41:11and it was twofold because he's kind of
- 41:13fragile and he is a movement doctor.
- 41:17And, uh, and his was the,
- 41:19the spine adjustment,
- 41:22spine adjustment was his finishing move
- 41:24with, uh,
- 41:25and it was like a spine buster power
- 41:29bomb type deal.
- 41:30Uh, it, a spine buster is different.
- 41:33It's they've outlawed the tombstone and,
- 41:36uh, for obvious reasons and stuff, right.
- 41:39Because of, uh,
- 41:40But anyway,
- 41:42the point of the story is that we
- 41:48have all these people with these crazy
- 41:50personalities in CrossFit.
- 41:53And it goes back to what we talked
- 41:55about with like the Hiller video.
- 41:56There's nobody,
- 41:58like you watch a boxing match or you
- 42:00watch a UFC match.
- 42:02There's almost like a PR campaign to
- 42:05create the character of the fighter in the
- 42:09match.
- 42:11Well, there is.
- 42:12There is.
- 42:13There is.
- 42:13There is.
- 42:13There is.
- 42:13There is.
- 42:14There is.
- 42:15There is.
- 42:20But we don't have anybody,
- 42:23anybody doing that for the athletes in
- 42:26CrossFit unless it's their own agent or
- 42:29themselves.
- 42:29And I don't even think like the agents
- 42:31even think in that direction,
- 42:33like create the character that this person
- 42:35is.
- 42:36You have characters and every time we get
- 42:40one,
- 42:41like the whole community kind of like
- 42:43gravitates to that person, right?
- 42:47Yeah.
- 42:48Why aren't we making a more concerted
- 42:50effort to use some kind of PR to
- 42:57get to know these athletes and create that
- 43:00persona that can be used in promo videos
- 43:04as they come out on the floor or
- 43:05be used in social media as they're going
- 43:08to compete in this event.
- 43:10Here's a video of their persona.
- 43:15I just think it's a big miss.
- 43:19Oh yeah.
- 43:19No, a hundred percent.
- 43:20One of the reasons the NBA took off
- 43:22in the eighties and nineties is they
- 43:24started to promote their players instead
- 43:27of promoting the teams or the league.
- 43:29They promoted the magic Johnson's the
- 43:31Larry birds, the Michael Jordan's,
- 43:33and then they became the face of the
- 43:35league and that then it just took off.
- 43:38Yeah.
- 43:39All of a sudden it's, it's magic Johnson.
- 43:44It's air Jordan.
- 43:45It's,
- 43:46Charles Barkley,
- 43:47the round mound of rebound.
- 43:49It's Clyde, the glide Drexler.
- 43:51Every single time they said his name down
- 43:53there, you know,
- 43:55and aside from the rest of all those
- 43:59names and whatnot.
- 44:00But, yeah, absolutely.
- 44:02They went away from the Showtime Lakers
- 44:05to, yes,
- 44:06these are the Lakers who are part who
- 44:08here's this guy and here's this guy and
- 44:10here's this guy.
- 44:10Yeah, absolutely.
- 44:14It wouldn't be hard to do.
- 44:17I really don't think it'd be that hard
- 44:18to do.
- 44:19Like,
- 44:19to latch on to the few who are
- 44:21showing their personality more than
- 44:23others,
- 44:24the Jason Hoppers and the Colton Mertens
- 44:26of the world, right?
- 44:28And the DBEs, right?
- 44:31Because she's all personality at this
- 44:33point.
- 44:34Well,
- 44:35I think she's the only one that doesn't
- 44:36need help.
- 44:37No, I would agree to that.
- 44:39She already has a persona.
- 44:42I mean,
- 44:43from the flipping off of the crowd...
- 44:46to her dropping an F bomb live on
- 44:48ESPN.
- 44:49Yeah.
- 44:52And he is the ultimate CrossFit heel.
- 44:55And in today's world in a wrestling heel
- 44:58is half loved and half hated.
- 45:01And she, she is that to the,
- 45:04to the perfection.
- 45:06Like she is loved and hated as much
- 45:09on both sides of the fence.
- 45:11Yeah.
- 45:14And either you want her to win or
- 45:16you're rooting for her to lose.
- 45:17Yeah.
- 45:17There's not,
- 45:17there's not many people in the middle of
- 45:20the road as far as Daniel Brandon is
- 45:21concerned.
- 45:22No, but you look at,
- 45:24and then you look at her popularity on
- 45:27all the socials, anything she touches.
- 45:30I mean,
- 45:31Jenny's updates probably went through the
- 45:33roof when she was doing the updates of
- 45:36Danielle's life.
- 45:37Right.
- 45:37You could probably,
- 45:40you had to know what the next piece
- 45:42of the story was.
- 45:44Yeah.
- 45:45But we got our own underwear line for
- 45:47Christ's sake.
- 45:47We have all these great athletes,
- 45:49but like,
- 45:50unless Hiller goes out and does twenty
- 45:52four hours with them,
- 45:53we don't know anything about them.
- 45:55Not much.
- 45:59Colton's a great example.
- 46:01Colton is a perfect example of how he
- 46:05got attached to the Savon podcast.
- 46:08He became the pig farmer that became the
- 46:11iron hog that, you know,
- 46:14and then took over the world by taking
- 46:17on all comers and being the ultimate
- 46:19underdog.
- 46:23And that persona has catapulted him into
- 46:27probably being the most popular male
- 46:29athlete in the sport.
- 46:31And the man has never finished top ten.
- 46:34Everybody loves him.
- 46:36Right.
- 46:37I defy you to find somebody who actively
- 46:40dislikes Colton Mertens.
- 46:42There's always going to be somebody that
- 46:44is like, yeah,
- 46:44he gets too much press for not doing
- 46:46enough and you know, blah, blah, blah.
- 46:49There's always going to be those people,
- 46:50but he is an awesome dude.
- 46:52He is always cool.
- 46:55He's always been cool to me.
- 46:57Always giving me an interview whenever
- 46:58I've asked all that kind of stuff.
- 47:01And, uh,
- 47:03I just think that that's the piece that
- 47:05CrossFit is missing.
- 47:07If you want to promote the games,
- 47:09start promoting the athletes.
- 47:11And I think Hiller said that in a
- 47:14different way.
- 47:15But go ahead and figure out personas for
- 47:22these people.
- 47:24Give them nicknames like the Iron Hog.
- 47:29You know?
- 47:29Promote them as people,
- 47:31not just CrossFit athletes.
- 47:35Like the road to the game stuff should
- 47:37not just be them working out.
- 47:40It shouldn't be just a bunch of workout
- 47:41porn.
- 47:42It should be way more like the twenty
- 47:44four hours with them like that,
- 47:47which is how they used to be.
- 47:49FYI, the old road to the game stuff.
- 47:51I got several of them.
- 47:53I bought all for fricking prime and it's
- 47:55interviews with them in their kitchen.
- 47:57It was talking to, uh,
- 48:01Sam Briggs while she was making breakfast
- 48:04or something like that.
- 48:05Like it's, it's shit like that.
- 48:08That made you invest it.
- 48:09Like knowing people, there you go.
- 48:11And the email DBS,
- 48:12fifty three thousand views.
- 48:14Yeah.
- 48:17Because she has a persona.
- 48:19She has a persona.
- 48:22And because of that persona,
- 48:24people now are invested.
- 48:26And because they're invested,
- 48:27then they want the tea.
- 48:31They want to know more.
- 48:35People like her and Colton and...
- 48:42I'm trying to think if there's anybody
- 48:43else I can think of off the top
- 48:44of my head before I put this other
- 48:46part out there.
- 48:47They're unapologetically them.
- 48:50Danielle Brandon is who she is,
- 48:53and she ain't give a fuck what anybody
- 48:55else thinks, right?
- 48:57Doesn't matter to her.
- 48:58Colton Mertens is a pig farmer.
- 49:01Runs around pigs all day long,
- 49:03built his own equipment half the time,
- 49:06built his own barn,
- 49:07basically rebuilding his house by hand.
- 49:11He doesn't care.
- 49:12He doesn't care about what other people
- 49:13have to say about any kind of stuff.
- 49:16Katrin, love or hate her,
- 49:17she was a sled dog.
- 49:19You had a persona.
- 49:20In the old days,
- 49:21Rich Froning was Captain America.
- 49:23I know that Chase has stolen that from
- 49:26him.
- 49:27And then you had Kalipa,
- 49:28this guy that just went,
- 49:30one hundred percent, balls to the wall,
- 49:34out the gate,
- 49:34was going to pass out in the middle
- 49:36of the workout,
- 49:37or he was going to win it.
- 49:40you had characters back then,
- 49:42but there weren't as many of them.
- 49:44So we got to know them a little
- 49:45bit better.
- 49:48And I think the documentaries and the
- 49:49behind the scenes did enough back then to
- 49:52get us pictures of them off the floor.
- 49:57They're not doing that anymore.
- 49:58There's too many athletes.
- 49:59There's too much media out there.
- 50:01Chris Spieler with his, uh, with his ear,
- 50:04with his headphones and his, uh, his iPod.
- 50:06I mean, come on, bro.
- 50:12I lost it.
- 50:15Boys Interrupted are doing a great job
- 50:16promoting themselves.
- 50:18Need more athletes following their lead.
- 50:19I think they're doing a great job,
- 50:21but if they had the backing of CrossFit
- 50:23to take it that one more step,
- 50:26because you can't give yourself a
- 50:27nickname.
- 50:28You can't give yourself a persona.
- 50:30It's got to be done externally or it's
- 50:32not.
- 50:34you know,
- 50:35bro code is you never give yourself a
- 50:37nickname.
- 50:38No, never.
- 50:41Right.
- 50:42And it's got to be given to you.
- 50:45And that, so I think that while they,
- 50:48the four of them are doing a great
- 50:50job promoting themselves,
- 50:52if CrossFit backed something to give them
- 50:55a persona and like a hype video or
- 50:58something like that,
- 50:59it takes it a step further.
- 51:07Ken,
- 51:08Danny Spiegel does not fall in the I
- 51:09don't care category.
- 51:11You may not care.
- 51:13You may not care.
- 51:15But there are a lot of people that
- 51:17care about Danny Spiegel.
- 51:19I think he means that Danny Spiegel
- 51:21doesn't give a shit.
- 51:23She doesn't care.
- 51:25I don't buy that either.
- 51:27I don't buy that.
- 51:28I think she definitely cares about her
- 51:30image.
- 51:30About everything.
- 51:31Yeah,
- 51:32I think she cares about her image a
- 51:33lot.
- 51:34I do like this from Mark, though.
- 51:36Dan Bailey was featured quite a bit.
- 51:37Didn't really know a ton about him outside
- 51:39of fitness, though.
- 51:40If you want to learn about Dan Bailey,
- 51:41go watch the twenty fifteen and the twenty
- 51:44sixteen documentaries and a couple of the
- 51:48behind the scenes from around that time as
- 51:50well.
- 51:50And you will learn a whole lot about
- 51:52Dan Bailey because he was from when he
- 51:54was living on a boat.
- 51:57They don't really talk about his track
- 51:59stuff too much like that,
- 52:00but he tells some crazy stories about him
- 52:04going camping up in Northern California
- 52:06and whatnot.
- 52:07There's some shit about that.
- 52:10I know more about Dan Bailey than I
- 52:11care to know about.
- 52:12The Big Sky stuff with Dan Bailey and
- 52:15Rich.
- 52:16I have a video still saved on my
- 52:18email from Beyond the Whiteboard of Dan
- 52:20Bailey learning how to do a backflip in,
- 52:21like,
- 52:22thirty minutes because the place that him
- 52:25and Rich were at when they were doing,
- 52:27like,
- 52:27I want to say it was the Big
- 52:28Sky stuff,
- 52:29they made up a workout for him, like,
- 52:31whoever they were around,
- 52:32and it had backflips in it.
- 52:33And Rich, of course,
- 52:36knew how to do a backflip,
- 52:39and Dan did not,
- 52:40and they taught him how to do one
- 52:41in about thirty minutes,
- 52:42and he did a workout with backflips in
- 52:44it.
- 52:46I remember when I learned Dan Bailey lived
- 52:49on a boat and he would lift on
- 52:50the boat.
- 52:51That was awesome.
- 52:54But again,
- 52:54the behind the scenes back then did a
- 52:56really good job of it.
- 52:57I don't do that anymore.
- 53:00They've gotten into a template that
- 53:03doesn't really tell us a lot about the
- 53:05athlete and it just kind of shows
- 53:07highlight videos of them working out.
- 53:10So Jenny asks,
- 53:10we know Cowboy Scott is one of yours.
- 53:14Well, I mean,
- 53:14the obvious would be the Clydesdale,
- 53:16but I have a gym nickname,
- 53:22but I don't know.
- 53:25My tattoo is all about my gym nickname.
- 53:28And I don't know.
- 53:31Maybe I'll reveal it sometime.
- 53:36The only other nickname I've ever had
- 53:38besides
- 53:39The one that someone threw on me two
- 53:42months ago, whenever that was, uh,
- 53:44was one of the guys used to work
- 53:44with called me bulldog.
- 53:47And then when I was a kid,
- 53:48my mom called me frog.
- 53:50That's about it.
- 53:52Never happened.
- 53:55So our captain Steve Rogers got it right.
- 53:57My, my gym nickname is spooky.
- 53:59All right.
- 54:01So here's the story and it's so my
- 54:04gym nickname was Thor.
- 54:08And it's not for like what anybody thinks.
- 54:10It's not like I was the strongest in
- 54:12the gym.
- 54:12I mean,
- 54:13that was kind of my thing that I
- 54:15did better than most.
- 54:17But they called me Thor because we used
- 54:21to have picnics all the time as a
- 54:23gym.
- 54:24And we would play bocce.
- 54:27And I would always chuck the pin in.
- 54:32cause we played like redneck bocce where
- 54:34you just play in a backyard,
- 54:35you'd throw the pin and then you'd chuck
- 54:37the balls.
- 54:38Well,
- 54:39I would launch the balls and they're like,
- 54:42son of a bitch Thor.
- 54:46So it was really about my bocce ball
- 54:47playing more than anything.
- 54:49Um, so they've always,
- 54:51they always called me Thor, but I,
- 54:53I haven't gone by that name in a
- 54:55while.
- 54:55And, um,
- 54:58I don't know.
- 54:58I'm not feeling Thor-ish these days.
- 55:01I just need to get healthy first.
- 55:03I would imagine, Pete,
- 55:05if any of those guys saw you from
- 55:06that time,
- 55:06they would probably still refer to you as
- 55:08Thor.
- 55:10I feel like once you get a gym
- 55:11nickname,
- 55:12it's very well- That's what they would
- 55:14call me.
- 55:18A hundred percent.
- 55:20Big Daddy.
- 55:21It was not Big Daddy.
- 55:25Oh, winter.
- 55:28yeah but we would have that's what i
- 55:30love about crossfit in its community and
- 55:33it is cultish like and i know you
- 55:35know jenny's talked about it on her show
- 55:37and like we would have cookouts all the
- 55:40time like all summer long we would do
- 55:43a saturday workout and go to somebody's
- 55:45house with a cookout and we would always
- 55:47play redneck bocce ball up until i mean
- 55:52members come and go change you know you
- 55:54get like a core group that stays around
- 55:56for a long time but like
- 55:58even the makeup at our place right now
- 55:59is way different than it was a year
- 56:02and a half ago,
- 56:03but also a year and a half ago,
- 56:04like same thing.
- 56:05Like we would get done with Murph and
- 56:08then we'd all go to somebody's house and
- 56:10go and like my buddy David had a
- 56:13brand new pool put in.
- 56:14So like there's plenty of pictures of us.
- 56:17And by us, I mean like,
- 56:18it's like some of the twenty-year-olds,
- 56:22some of the thirty-year-olds,
- 56:23a bunch of the forty-year-olds,
- 56:25And Miss Claudia,
- 56:26who was like seventy eight at the time
- 56:28or or eighty, whatever,
- 56:29drinking her red stripe with us.
- 56:32And it's everybody over there, you know,
- 56:34all hanging out,
- 56:35all having a couple of drinks, eating,
- 56:38you know, grilling, whatever.
- 56:40We would go to my buddy Jeff's house.
- 56:41We still had a gym.
- 56:42He's actually a coach now.
- 56:43A whole bunch,
- 56:44even though his house was thirty minutes
- 56:46from the gym.
- 56:47Damn near like we're going to have some.
- 56:49We had Thanksgiving over there a couple of
- 56:51times, Friendsgiving,
- 56:51whatever you want to call it.
- 56:55Less of that now, just kind of,
- 56:57you know, seasons of life type stuff.
- 56:59But like,
- 56:59I don't see it going away completely.
- 57:02Like we still have,
- 57:03we don't have as big of groups,
- 57:07but like we did poker nights at the
- 57:08gym before, which was fantastic.
- 57:12Christmas party.
- 57:13We're not having a Christmas party this
- 57:14year, but we are doing,
- 57:16still doing a white elephant.
- 57:20we call it the annual versus bourbon
- 57:22exchange,
- 57:23but we split everybody off into teams of
- 57:25two, write a couple workouts,
- 57:27like three workouts or whatever that
- 57:29everybody can do legitimately.
- 57:33Randomly pick teams,
- 57:35even though the last two years I've
- 57:36randomly got picked with some of the other
- 57:38fittest people in the gym,
- 57:39which is pretty awesome.
- 57:42Like last year,
- 57:43me and Blair had it sewed up before
- 57:44the last workout even started.
- 57:47But...
- 57:49Ken Walters.
- 57:50We had a nickname for a spot in
- 57:51our old box.
- 57:52A few of us labeled cut rep corner.
- 57:55They were always top whiteboard.
- 57:56Then when open or in-house comps,
- 57:59they never entered.
- 58:00Yeah, we,
- 58:01I think every gym has cut rep corner
- 58:04at some point,
- 58:05but
- 58:06We're heading up against the hour.
- 58:08I have got to get back to work.
- 58:11Breaking news,
- 58:13Phillip Rivers has been signed out of
- 58:15retirement to play for the Colts since
- 58:17they are out of quarterbacks.
- 58:19At forty-four years old and a grandfather,
- 58:24he will be the first grandfather to play
- 58:25in the NFL since Brett Favre.
- 58:28Wow.
- 58:32Okay.
- 58:33Crazy.
- 58:34Phillip Rivers is a good quarterback,
- 58:35isn't he?
- 58:37Well,
- 58:37he was when he was in his thirties.
- 58:39That's what I said.
- 58:39It was a good quarterback.
- 58:41I have no idea what he's going to
- 58:42look like when he gets out there for
- 58:43a coach, but I mean,
- 58:45I think I heard a really good defense
- 58:47this week.
- 58:48He could die.
- 58:50And, uh, Hey,
- 58:52what a way to go doing a thing
- 58:53you love.
- 58:54All right.
- 58:56I mean, he's already four dude.
- 58:57Don't forget to like, and subscribe guys.
- 58:59Uh, go buy some thirds.
- 59:01He go buy some thirds.
- 59:02He used code Jazzy.
- 59:05This dude, Cowboy,
- 59:06is really killing the HRV.
- 59:10We'll talk about that tomorrow.
- 59:11We will.
- 59:12Come back slash Jazzy.
- 59:14Use the code Jazzy to get fifteen percent
- 59:16off and we will see everybody tomorrow on
- 59:19lunch with Clydesdale.
