Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / OF VIRTUE: Burning Down The Altar With TYLER ENNIS And DAMON TATE
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I am Tyler. I play in the band called Overture,
- 0:02Speaker 1: and I am the vocalist.
- 0:05Speaker 2: My name is Damon. I sing and I play guitar
- 0:08Speaker 2: in Overture. Fantastic.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Gentlemen, thanks for joining us today. Thank you for having us.
- 0:14Speaker 2: My pleasure.
- 0:16Speaker 3: So the reason we're here chatting is because Overture dropped
- 0:19Speaker 3: your new album, Death of the Ultra, on October the 30th.
- 0:22Speaker 4: So how do you feel about it?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Oh, dude, I feel fantastic.
- 0:27Speaker 5: Like.
- 0:28Speaker 6: Again, this was, it feels like it's a long time coming.
- 0:32Speaker 6: It usually feels like that with every album, but this
- 0:35Speaker 6: one in particular, it was a little more challenging to
- 0:38Speaker 6: get it done, finally get it across the finish line.
- 0:40Speaker 2: But when we did, it was great.
- 0:43Speaker 6: We were in London on the second when the album
- 0:46Speaker 6: came out, which is rare for us, which was awesome.
- 0:49Speaker 6: Got a chance to celebrate with a lot of friends,
- 0:51Speaker 6: play a soup, like probably our biggest show that we've
- 0:54Speaker 6: ever played in London at the time, and then be
- 0:57Speaker 6: able to go out on the rest of the tour and,
- 1:00Speaker 6: you know, play a bunch of songs off of that,
- 1:02Speaker 6: see people's reactions in real time.
- 1:03Speaker 2: It's, it's an awesome feeling. Not bad.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Can you, can you dive into the album a bit
- 1:08Speaker 3: more deeply from a musical point of view and what.
- 1:11Speaker 2: You were going for this time around? Ooh, Ty, I'll
- 1:15Speaker 2: let you take the, take the wheel on that one.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Ooh, yeah.
- 1:18Speaker 5: So, um, man, every single time that we have gone from,
- 1:27Speaker 5: you know, one album to the next. Obviously there's a
- 1:30Speaker 5: lot of, you know, there's a lot of thinking involved.
- 1:34Speaker 5: There's a lot of just being able to get in
- 1:39Speaker 5: a room, talk about what worked on the last album,
- 1:43Speaker 5: what didn't work. And for us this time, it was
- 1:48Speaker 5: just something that we really wanted to go a little
- 1:55Speaker 5: bit more deep in, in, in the sense that we
- 1:58Speaker 5: wanted to talk about the things that we have already
- 2:01Speaker 5: talked about, like maybe, you know, experience wise. Right.
- 2:05Speaker 1: But we wanted to be more, uh, like, like actually
- 2:09Speaker 1: have a.
- 2:10Speaker 5: Theme because, uh, Omen actually didn't really start as an album.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Omen was just a batch of songs, uh, that, uh,
- 2:18Speaker 5: we originally were just going to release a singles and
- 2:21Speaker 5: then we thought about it and we're like, you know what,
- 2:23Speaker 5: we need to do an album. So obviously like we,
- 2:26Speaker 5: we had to finish an album. So there was, there
- 2:28Speaker 5: was a lot of different moving parts with that. Whereas
- 2:31Speaker 5: this one was the first time that we have all
- 2:33Speaker 5: been in a room together. Uh, when we wrote an album,
- 2:36Speaker 5: obviously different multiple sessions, but, um, the, uh, the bulk
- 2:42Speaker 5: of the songs that were written, um, with both of
- 2:45Speaker 5: our producers at the same time, uh, we were, we
- 2:49Speaker 5: just had gotten back from Europe. Uh, and then we,
- 2:52Speaker 5: we had a, uh, you know, we did a festival, um,
- 2:57Speaker 5: did welcome to Rockville and then basically came back and
- 3:00Speaker 5: then just, tried to finish the record so for us
- 3:03Speaker 5: being able to write something that is a lot more
- 3:06Speaker 5: personal um it involves a lot more um emotions because
- 3:10Speaker 5: uh you know there's a couple songs which i'm sure
- 3:13Speaker 5: damon will get into it as well but there's you
- 3:15Speaker 5: know some very personal songs for him on this record
- 3:19Speaker 5: uh there's some personal songs on this record for me
- 3:21Speaker 5: uh just you know my experiences and the things i've
- 3:25Speaker 5: gone through in the last couple years and just being
- 3:28Speaker 5: able to write uh i think is our best to date,
- 3:32Speaker 5: but like the most emotionally heavy, uh, album that we
- 3:35Speaker 5: have written, uh, because we all talked about it. You know,
- 3:39Speaker 5: it was something that we were like, we really need
- 3:42Speaker 5: to write. We, we need to get these things off
- 3:46Speaker 5: of our chest. And I think we, we did a
- 3:48Speaker 5: very good job of that. Uh, this time around, uh,
- 3:52Speaker 5: you know, like there was great things that worked with
- 3:54Speaker 5: Omen that we wanted to, um, capitalize on for this record.
- 3:58Speaker 1: And I really feel like we did that.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Yeah, very cool, man, very cool.
- 4:03Speaker 3: You've released the singles The Art of Love, What's It
- 4:05Speaker 3: Like to Be Happy, The End, Flatline, Too Late, and
- 4:08Speaker 3: the title track. Would you say that overall they're a
- 4:12Speaker 3: good sonic reflection of what to expect from the whole album?
- 4:16Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely.
- 4:17Speaker 6: Kind of what Tyler was talking about with Omens, we
- 4:20Speaker 6: kind of, I don't want to say we didn't know
- 4:22Speaker 6: what we were doing coming into it, but it was like,
- 4:25Speaker 6: just given where everything was at in the world at
- 4:27Speaker 6: the time, we just got off our old label. We
- 4:30Speaker 6: kind of didn't necessarily know if we were still going
- 4:32Speaker 6: to be a band. So at the end of the day,
- 4:34Speaker 6: we were just like, you know what? Let's just experiment.
- 4:37Speaker 6: Let's write a lot of different kinds of songs. Let's
- 4:39Speaker 6: try things that we haven't tried before. And there was
- 4:42Speaker 6: a lot of success in that process. I think with
- 4:46Speaker 6: Alter and all the songs that you just listed, it's
- 4:48Speaker 6: like there was very much like an intentional purpose for
- 4:52Speaker 6: each one where it's like, hey, we liked what we
- 4:55Speaker 6: did with this one.
- 4:56Speaker 2: We liked what we did with this song. We liked
- 4:57Speaker 2: what we did with this.
- 4:59Speaker 6: And sometimes, obviously, you learn from, you know, maybe we
- 5:02Speaker 6: could have fleshed this one out a little bit different
- 5:04Speaker 6: or we didn't go as far as we'd like to
- 5:06Speaker 6: with this other one. So going back through kind of
- 5:10Speaker 6: what worked on Omen, we just tried to turn it
- 5:12Speaker 6: up a notch on Altar. So, you know, if we
- 5:15Speaker 6: wanted a catchy chorus, we wanted the whole song like
- 5:18Speaker 6: you're just, you know, bopping your head back and forth
- 5:20Speaker 6: the entire time. If it wanted to be heavy, We
- 5:22Speaker 6: tried to push the heaviness as much as we could
- 5:25Speaker 6: while maintaining, you know, what we still like to do
- 5:28Speaker 6: with everything else. So we learned a lot through Omen
- 5:32Speaker 6: and it translated through all the songs on Altar where
- 5:36Speaker 6: for me, this album feels much more concise, more cohesive.
- 5:41Speaker 6: And when you get a chance to listen to it
- 5:43Speaker 6: all the way through, it's like you will get the differences.
- 5:46Speaker 6: You get the dynamic. You get all of the different
- 5:49Speaker 6: elements that make up our band. but it also feels
- 5:51Speaker 6: like one coherent idea instead of kind of what we
- 5:54Speaker 6: were saying before, like, you know, a different single or,
- 5:58Speaker 6: you know, batching it in different pieces.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Yeah, nice.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Now, thematically, Death of the Order explores the painful realization
- 6:06Speaker 3: that the things we cherish most can also become the
- 6:09Speaker 3: things that hurt the deepest, right?
- 6:11Speaker 1: That's pretty heavy subject matter, guys.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Can you take us a bit deeper into it?
- 6:16Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. I mean, oh, go ahead, Tyler.
- 6:18Speaker 1: No, no, no, you're good. You're good.
- 6:21Speaker 6: Oh, no, all I was going to say, so the
- 6:23Speaker 6: title and kind of some of the themes, they didn't
- 6:27Speaker 6: come along originally, like in the beginning. Again, we're working
- 6:31Speaker 6: through some ideas, we're working through themes. And we just
- 6:34Speaker 6: kind of started noticing that everybody, all of us were
- 6:37Speaker 6: in this transitional phase or period in our lives where
- 6:41Speaker 6: certain things were bothering us or we were, you know,
- 6:43Speaker 6: we're at a crossroads where, you.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Know, decisions have to be made.
- 6:46Speaker 6: You know, when it comes to what you were talking
- 6:49Speaker 6: about of the theme of the record of like putting
- 6:51Speaker 6: things on a pedestal or putting energy into things, idolizing things,
- 6:58Speaker 6: worshiping things, or just, you know, not getting what you
- 7:03Speaker 6: need in return from these things. It could be as
- 7:06Speaker 6: simple as, you know, a relationship with, a loved one,
- 7:10Speaker 6: you know, an intimate partner, it could be, you know,
- 7:14Speaker 6: being going down the wrong.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Path in life.
- 7:16Speaker 6: Like you feel stuck, you feel like, Oh, I'm moving
- 7:19Speaker 6: in one way and I'm not sure how to change
- 7:21Speaker 6: that or go the other way, but I'm just going
- 7:23Speaker 6: to keep moving because at least if I keep moving,
- 7:25Speaker 6: it's something.
- 7:27Speaker 2: And that is not always the remedy.
- 7:30Speaker 6: When it comes to a bigger social sense and that
- 7:33Speaker 6: we touch on a lot of this stuff too, with
- 7:35Speaker 6: the record, it's, You know, we as a society, you
- 7:38Speaker 6: look at the things that people love. You look at
- 7:41Speaker 6: social media and it's clicks, it's streams, it's algorithms, it's numbers.
- 7:45Speaker 6: It reduces artists. It reduces people to just these figures. And,
- 7:51Speaker 6: you know, people make music. People make commerce. People do
- 7:55Speaker 6: things only based on numbers and not actually dealing with
- 7:59Speaker 6: tangible reality anymore. when people feel bad about themselves or
- 8:03Speaker 6: they are going about their day and you look online
- 8:06Speaker 6: and you're like, Oh.
- 8:07Speaker 2: This person's happy. This person's happy. This person's happy.
- 8:10Speaker 6: And you forget that those people are, it's like the,
- 8:14Speaker 6: it's like the glacier theory. You're only posting, uh, you know,
- 8:17Speaker 6: the 0.0001% of your life that you think is going
- 8:21Speaker 6: the best.
- 8:22Speaker 2: When in reality, people can't see it. Maybe that, you know,
- 8:25Speaker 2: you're three months.
- 8:26Speaker 6: Behind on your car payment or, you know, you just
- 8:28Speaker 6: had a kid and he won't stop crying and you
- 8:31Speaker 6: can't get any sleep, but you can't let the, any
- 8:33Speaker 6: of the world see that because, you know, you feel
- 8:36Speaker 6: like you're isolated or by yourself. And we all buy
- 8:39Speaker 6: into it at some point in time. We're all guilty
- 8:41Speaker 6: of it. So going through a lot of these conversations
- 8:44Speaker 6: and just where we were at, you could start to
- 8:47Speaker 6: see a through line with all the songs that we
- 8:49Speaker 6: were putting out. And it all fit into this like, hey,
- 8:54Speaker 6: you know, where Omen was a little more of like
- 8:56Speaker 6: a you know, a character had, you know, succumbed to
- 9:02Speaker 6: their own personal addictions and demons.
- 9:03Speaker 2: And it goes through that journey.
- 9:05Speaker 6: This kind of takes that theme, but also puts it
- 9:07Speaker 6: into a more macro sense and involves everybody, not just
- 9:11Speaker 6: one person. This is us realizing like, you know, we've
- 9:15Speaker 6: been fortunate enough to be able to travel to many
- 9:17Speaker 6: different places across the world. meet so many different kinds
- 9:20Speaker 6: of people you know we sing songs that people sing
- 9:24Speaker 6: back to us and we are also still fans of
- 9:27Speaker 6: music to where we go see our favorite artists from
- 9:30Speaker 6: all different points the one through line with that is
- 9:32Speaker 6: that we're all interconnected and a lot of our problems
- 9:36Speaker 6: are all very similar in some ways and that for
- 9:42Speaker 6: us was like one of the things where it was
- 9:43Speaker 6: like hey When defining the concept, when defining what this
- 9:48Speaker 6: record was going to be about, it actually kind of
- 9:50Speaker 6: came into full force with the actual title of the track,
- 9:53Speaker 6: because we were all sitting there, you know, we're coming
- 9:56Speaker 6: up with hooks we're coming up with things and Tyler
- 9:59Speaker 6: had a little cadence that wound up including Death of
- 10:02Speaker 6: the Altar in there it was a little bit worded
- 10:04Speaker 6: differently but it struck a chord with everybody and it's
- 10:07Speaker 6: like hey you know what that's what this kind of
- 10:09Speaker 6: feels like it feels like you know whatever this chapter
- 10:13Speaker 6: is for our band whatever this is going to be
- 10:16Speaker 6: this is the last time that we're going to be
- 10:18Speaker 6: here You know, we're not a band that revisits things
- 10:22Speaker 6: very often. And I believe this album is no different.
- 10:26Speaker 6: And it's for us, again, it's a big turning point.
- 10:29Speaker 6: It's a big shift. It's a big turning the page.
- 10:32Speaker 6: There's a lot of things that have happened in everybody's lives.
- 10:35Speaker 6: So that's kind of at least my take on where
- 10:38Speaker 6: this record, the impetus came from, our thought process behind it,
- 10:43Speaker 6: and kind of how we got through, you know, making it.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Well said, brother.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Very well said.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Charlie, do you have anything to add, or does that
- 10:51Speaker 3: sum it up?
- 10:53Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, I'll just add... It pretty much sums
- 10:56Speaker 1: it up, but I'll just add that the whole.
- 11:03Speaker 5: Process last year especially um you know in may i
- 11:07Speaker 5: had just gone through a breakup and that's kind of
- 11:10Speaker 5: where my head was at i was going through so
- 11:11Speaker 5: many changes so my head was in this i just
- 11:14Speaker 5: want to talk about the like where my head's i
- 11:16Speaker 5: want to talk about you know the things that i'm
- 11:18Speaker 5: going through and um i was like man i don't
- 11:22Speaker 5: think love's for me anymore I don't I don't think
- 11:25Speaker 5: it's there. So that's kind of where the the idea
- 11:28Speaker 5: of death of the altar, because obviously, you know, at
- 11:30Speaker 5: an altar, you get married.
- 11:32Speaker 1: So but it may it can mean a whole lot
- 11:36Speaker 1: of other things.
- 11:37Speaker 5: And Damon summed it up pretty perfectly. But just to
- 11:40Speaker 5: give an insight of like where my head was at
- 11:42Speaker 5: when we were writing the record, that's kind of where
- 11:45Speaker 5: it came to be.
- 11:45Speaker 1: And that's we're like, yeah, we we want to.
- 11:49Speaker 5: Stop uh, worshiping the things and putting time and energy
- 11:54Speaker 5: into things that, you know, and are like basically not
- 11:57Speaker 5: getting that same love and same energy and effort back.
- 12:00Speaker 1: So that's pretty much the, the whole premise of the album.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Yes.
- 12:05Speaker 3: So would you say overall, it's an album of hope
- 12:07Speaker 3: or an album of despair?
- 12:10Speaker 1: Ooh, um, neither.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Honestly, I would say that.
- 12:16Speaker 6: Hope is an interesting term for me because yes, We
- 12:20Speaker 6: are a band that we do like to show people like, hey,
- 12:22Speaker 6: there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
- 12:24Speaker 6: You can get to the other side. But I think
- 12:27Speaker 6: this album, in a lot of ways, is not that.
- 12:33Speaker 6: This is distilling what we were feeling like in real time.
- 12:37Speaker 6: And in real time, there's not always hope. There are
- 12:41Speaker 6: moments in our lives where you don't feel that. And
- 12:46Speaker 6: we do have music. We do have music that reflects that.
- 12:49Speaker 6: we have songs that reflect that whole records that reflect
- 12:52Speaker 6: that alter to us. Is that kind of like, Hey,
- 12:57Speaker 6: you need to kind of soak in the fact that
- 12:59Speaker 6: this is happening.
- 13:01Speaker 2: And one of two things is going to happen.
- 13:04Speaker 6: You're going to let it beat you or you're going
- 13:05Speaker 6: to overcome it at some point, how you get there
- 13:09Speaker 6: is going to be your own story.
- 13:10Speaker 2: But in this case, I don't think it's sad.
- 13:13Speaker 6: Like people will interpret it and interpret various songs in
- 13:17Speaker 6: different ways.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Yes. There are themes.
- 13:19Speaker 6: Sadness or despair or melancholy there are some also some
- 13:24Speaker 6: tongue-in-cheek there's some nihilism there are there's some kind of
- 13:28Speaker 6: more funny moments there's some very angsty kind of argumentative
- 13:32Speaker 6: things but overall there's not one thing it's it's we
- 13:36Speaker 6: wanted to really capture how we all felt in real
- 13:39Speaker 6: time and sometimes you're going to be happy like so
- 13:42Speaker 6: what's it like to be happy is a perfect example
- 13:45Speaker 6: of this that song really is from the point of
- 13:48Speaker 6: view of someone who's having a terrible day that if
- 13:52Speaker 6: you're having a terrible day, sometimes when you see other
- 13:54Speaker 6: people having a good day, it makes you angry. It
- 13:57Speaker 6: makes you pissed off because you're like, how come I
- 14:00Speaker 6: can't have that? I want this other person or these
- 14:03Speaker 6: people to feel like a, how I feel. But the
- 14:06Speaker 6: funny part about it is the backdrop of the song
- 14:08Speaker 6: is a little bit more bouncy. It's a little more happy.
- 14:10Speaker 6: People sing along with it, but that's also kind of the,
- 14:14Speaker 6: the interplay here is because there is then an old
- 14:17Speaker 6: adage for a reason.
- 14:17Speaker 2: It's called misery loves company.
- 14:20Speaker 6: It's, you know, we are united sometimes in the fact
- 14:24Speaker 6: that we are suffering, but we don't know how to
- 14:26Speaker 6: articulate it.
- 14:28Speaker 2: And the only way that we can really.
- 14:29Speaker 6: Kind of get through it is by, in some ways,
- 14:31Speaker 6: kind of suffering in silence with one another without realizing
- 14:35Speaker 6: what each other is going through. So there's a lot
- 14:38Speaker 6: of themes going on, man. But we wanted everything to
- 14:40Speaker 6: feel like we felt in real time.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You guys are both vocalists, so
- 14:47Speaker 3: I'm assuming that you're both right as well.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Yeah. I sort of always want to.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Be like an album like this has got so much
- 14:52Speaker 3: personal stuff on it. Like no two people ever agree
- 14:56Speaker 3: on personal stuff. So when it comes to writing a
- 14:58Speaker 3: song together, is it difficult when you don't agree a
- 15:02Speaker 3: hundred percent on things, if that makes sense?
- 15:06Speaker 1: Um, no, no, honestly, not at all.
- 15:09Speaker 5: Like that's, that's one of the things that I have
- 15:13Speaker 5: really loved about, um, you know, our band is we are, um, Like, sure,
- 15:19Speaker 5: there are moments where, you know, you can have like, well, oh,
- 15:24Speaker 5: where is this going? Oh, well, how do I fit
- 15:26Speaker 5: into this song? Or how do I fit into this
- 15:29Speaker 5: theme and everything? But, you know, there's a couple personal
- 15:34Speaker 5: songs directly for Damon, you know, on this record.
- 15:40Speaker 1: And it's one of those things where it's like, he
- 15:42Speaker 1: has an idea. He brings it to the table and
- 15:45Speaker 1: he presents it. And it's like, this is, this is
- 15:47Speaker 1: what it is.
- 15:48Speaker 5: And the beauty in that is it's like, it's kind
- 15:52Speaker 5: of like a look into, you know, his, his feelings,
- 15:55Speaker 5: his experiences, instead of like, you know, me trying to put,
- 16:00Speaker 5: like trying to fit into the song just because. So,
- 16:03Speaker 5: you know, devotion is a, is a perfect example with that.
- 16:08Speaker 1: It's like, there were, Damon had to go out, and
- 16:13Speaker 1: do something.
- 16:14Speaker 5: Um, so we were sitting there trying to figure out
- 16:16Speaker 5: where I was going to fit into the song and we,
- 16:19Speaker 5: it just didn't make sense. You know, it didn't make sense.
- 16:22Speaker 5: And then we sat there and we're like, no, like,
- 16:24Speaker 5: you know what, this is going to be all Damon.
- 16:26Speaker 5: And you know, it's, it's done by design, but it's also,
- 16:30Speaker 5: I think it's a really great thing for our band
- 16:34Speaker 5: at the fact that he has his strengths and I
- 16:37Speaker 5: have mine.
- 16:38Speaker 1: However, we both push each other.
- 16:40Speaker 5: We both, you know, compliment each other very well, especially
- 16:44Speaker 5: with my screams, his singing, and then like his soft
- 16:49Speaker 5: and sultry parts. And then he's also got, you know,
- 16:52Speaker 5: he's got a very powerful voice as well.
- 16:54Speaker 1: So being able to utilize that with both.
- 16:57Speaker 5: Of us is a really cool thing too. And it's
- 17:00Speaker 5: just like being able to have that, you know, work,
- 17:05Speaker 5: like like we just work very well together we always
- 17:08Speaker 5: have i don't think we've ever really butted heads when
- 17:11Speaker 5: it's come to music because it's like when he has
- 17:14Speaker 5: an idea i i it's kind of one of those
- 17:17Speaker 5: things i'm like hey it might not make sense to
- 17:20Speaker 5: me but i'm gonna roll with it because it always
- 17:23Speaker 5: ends up making sense if uh i know this is
- 17:27Speaker 5: a lot of making sense but if that makes sense
- 17:30Speaker 5: um You know, it is one of those things where
- 17:33Speaker 5: I think we both challenge each other and compliment each
- 17:38Speaker 5: other very well at the same time that we don't
- 17:40Speaker 5: really have to disagree or agree on things.
- 17:43Speaker 1: We kind of let our voices speak that on the songs,
- 17:46Speaker 1: you know?
- 17:47Speaker 4: Yeah, that's very cool.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Diamond? Yeah.
- 17:51Speaker 6: Again, it's we, again, he kind of already said it's
- 17:54Speaker 6: like we're fortunate enough to want the best for both
- 18:01Speaker 6: of us, for everybody, honestly. Because there's even stories on
- 18:05Speaker 6: this record where it's not just us two. We want
- 18:09Speaker 6: Ryan and we want Mike represented as well. And as
- 18:13Speaker 6: long as, again, the messaging of the band stays the same,
- 18:19Speaker 6: then it doesn't matter who the lyrical side comes from.
- 18:22Speaker 6: It doesn't matter what the subject matter comes from because
- 18:25Speaker 6: there's four people with four different backgrounds And at the
- 18:30Speaker 6: end of the day, this is our story as a
- 18:33Speaker 6: collective to tell. And it's not always going to come
- 18:36Speaker 6: from just one perspective. So from that vantage, it's like
- 18:40Speaker 6: as long as we can, you know, again, like you said,
- 18:42Speaker 6: we can agree to disagree on maybe sometimes how to
- 18:45Speaker 6: get to a certain place or, you know, certain lines
- 18:48Speaker 6: on a topic or maybe this thing works better here.
- 18:51Speaker 6: But if anybody comes to the table with something that
- 18:55Speaker 6: they truly believe in.
- 19:03Speaker 6: Then you
- 19:05Speaker 6: just kind of roll with it. Cause like he said,
- 19:06Speaker 6: like devotion was like that for me. Uh, there's another
- 19:10Speaker 6: song on the record called enemy state where again, um,
- 19:13Speaker 6: it was written very quickly. Uh, Tyler wrote the lyrics
- 19:17Speaker 6: on the way to the rehearsal space. And when we
- 19:21Speaker 6: got there, we, we laid down the scratch and, And
- 19:25Speaker 6: really just kind of edited a few things. But largely,
- 19:28Speaker 6: none of us really had anything to do with it.
- 19:30Speaker 2: He just knew what he wanted to say.
- 19:32Speaker 6: And all we did was give him our tools to
- 19:35Speaker 6: help him clean it up a little bit and really
- 19:38Speaker 6: make it, you know, drive home.
- 19:40Speaker 2: As much as we possibly could. So, you know, that's
- 19:42Speaker 2: the best part. Again, no ego.
- 19:44Speaker 6: Just we put our we try to put the the
- 19:46Speaker 6: collective conscience forward before any of us.
- 19:50Speaker 4: Yeah nice yeah you touched on this before but the
- 19:52Speaker 4: album cover like you got someone kneeling over with candle
- 19:56Speaker 4: burning candles stuck into their back right i love it
- 19:59Speaker 4: man like it it's twisted but it's from a brilliant
- 20:02Speaker 4: mind i reckon like where did where did that come from.
- 20:07Speaker 6: That was our artist his name is kevin moore His
- 20:10Speaker 6: handle is mind reader or his old handle is.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Called soft surrogate. But, you know, we sent him some songs.
- 20:15Speaker 6: We sent him our thoughts and ideas of what the
- 20:19Speaker 6: record had was going to go, how the direction we
- 20:22Speaker 6: wanted to go. And he this was one of the
- 20:25Speaker 6: very first ideas he sent us back. He's like, you know,
- 20:28Speaker 6: I have somebody that I can film this with. You know,
- 20:30Speaker 6: I want the candles. Obviously, it's like representing it's like
- 20:33Speaker 6: any like an elegy.
- 20:35Speaker 2: It's a funeral.
- 20:35Speaker 6: It's like you see somebody praying like they're in a
- 20:38Speaker 6: church to something, but you also see that their hands
- 20:40Speaker 6: are bound because, again, they're afflicted with something, something that's happening. And,
- 20:46Speaker 6: you know, it's a powerful image because we're all like
- 20:50Speaker 6: that to a degree with something. And letting the human essence...
- 20:57Speaker 6: be the thing that you're going to gravitate to, especially
- 21:00Speaker 6: when you see the skin, when you see somebody's red skin,
- 21:02Speaker 6: like this dude almost got burns when he, when they
- 21:04Speaker 6: were doing this photo shoot, but, but that's, that's regular.
- 21:08Speaker 6: That's everyday life though. It's like, how many times do
- 21:11Speaker 6: we make a choice, make a decision that almost winds
- 21:14Speaker 6: up costing us more than what we thought it was
- 21:17Speaker 6: going to. And to us, like when we saw it
- 21:20Speaker 6: fully recognized and realized it's like that image is so cathartic.
- 21:24Speaker 6: I was like, That's it. And he knocked it out
- 21:27Speaker 6: of the park completely. He's a fantastic artist. So again, Kevin,
- 21:31Speaker 6: appreciate you so very much.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Kevin Moore, mind reader. Go check him out. Hire him
- 21:35Speaker 2: if you can, please. Awesome.
- 21:38Speaker 3: Now, before I let you go, guys, I've got a
- 21:39Speaker 3: new segment I've started. Do you remember the very first
- 21:44Speaker 3: song that you sung in the shower as a kid?
- 21:46Speaker 3: And do you still like that song today?
- 21:50Speaker 2: Yes. The very first song that I sang....
- 21:56Speaker 6: Or would sing is the Bee Gees, Stayin' Alive. And
- 22:02Speaker 6: that song rips. That bass line, the guitar line are
- 22:05Speaker 6: so hard. And it's like, yeah, I still, I love disco.
- 22:09Speaker 6: I love that era of music, so.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Yeah, cool.
- 22:11Speaker 4: John?
- 22:14Speaker 1: I would say it would be Jingle Bells.
- 22:19Speaker 5: Cool. And I'm not kidding. Like I have a video
- 22:24Speaker 5: of me saying jingle bells.
- 22:27Speaker 1: And, you know, I.
- 22:28Speaker 5: Have a video of me singing jingle bells and on
- 22:33Speaker 5: home video and it's like really embarrassing. because it's not
- 22:38Speaker 5: even the same lyrics.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Oh my God.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Well, thanks very much for your time. It's been a
- 22:44Speaker 3: pleasure chatting. Death of the Ultra is out October 30
- 22:47Speaker 3: and she has a damn fine album, guys.
- 22:48Speaker 4: So best of luck with it and see you next
- 22:50Speaker 4: time you come out to Australia.
