Latest / College Football Addiction: A Show About All Things College Football / LSU... It's Time We Had A SERIOUS Conversation About the Tigers After Ole Miss
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Let's move to the LSU side for a few minutes again,
- 0:04Speaker 1: presented by PrizePix here. Cole, what did, I mean, other
- 0:09Speaker 1: than just the unfortunate life that was having to go
- 0:13Speaker 1: up against Trinidad Chambliss, what did LSU struggle with here?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Oh, and he fell offline.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Oh, not right in that moment, Cole.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I'll dive in since he's getting it figured out. It
- 0:28Speaker 2: was ironic in that Ole Miss was at home. There
- 0:31Speaker 2: were certainly the butterflies. Lane Kiffin's coming back. There's the adrenaline.
- 0:36Speaker 2: It was a hostile environment. And who was the most nervous?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Sam Leavitt. Sam Leavitt was clearly not comfortable for the
- 0:45Speaker 2: first half of this game. And by the end of it,
- 0:49Speaker 2: we realized that on a bad day, he's a poor
- 0:51Speaker 2: man's Johnny Manziel. He had some bright spots. He seemed
- 0:56Speaker 2: like he was one read and take off. And even
- 0:59Speaker 2: if it wasn't one read, just kind of deciding, like,
- 1:01Speaker 2: I'm taking off, it didn't seem like he trusted his
- 1:04Speaker 2: offensive line. That was the biggest thing I took away
- 1:06Speaker 2: from this, is that Sam Levitt is a solid quarterback,
- 1:11Speaker 2: but there's levels to this. Trinidad Chambliss being the final
- 1:15Speaker 2: boss of quarterbacks within college football right now. Sam Levitt
- 1:18Speaker 2: is solid. Sam Levitt's going to win some games for
- 1:21Speaker 2: LSU for the remainder of this season. Sam Levitt and
- 1:23Speaker 2: LSU will still be in contention to make the college
- 1:25Speaker 2: football playoff. So it's not all doom and gloom. But
- 1:28Speaker 2: you could feel the frustration from Lane Kiffin with his quarterback,
- 1:32Speaker 2: with his offense in general. And we were talking about
- 1:34Speaker 2: it moments ago. We were discussing what's going on with
- 1:36Speaker 2: Ole Miss secondary, the way they played against LSU's passing game.
- 1:40Speaker 2: There aren't that many real threats within this passing game.
- 1:43Speaker 2: It needs to be a dink and dunk offense. And
- 1:45Speaker 2: that's kind of what they were able to do weeks
- 1:47Speaker 2: ago against Clemson. Clemson just gave up a ton of
- 1:49Speaker 2: explosives because it's just a bad team. Trades Green banged
- 1:53Speaker 2: up a little bit. His own mother apparently has reported
- 1:55Speaker 2: he seems to be okay going on.
- 1:57Speaker 3: No torn ligaments, but there's not a date when.
- 2:00Speaker 4: He can return.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Right. But even Trades Green, he is a physical freak,
- 2:04Speaker 2: but I wouldn't describe him as a game breaker, that
- 2:07Speaker 2: sort of player. They have a bunch of twos and threes,
- 2:10Speaker 2: a wide receiver. And this is a team that literally
- 2:12Speaker 2: got thrown together in the portal 10 months ago. So
- 2:16Speaker 2: I didn't have... top end expectations that it was going
- 2:19Speaker 2: to be a bunch of Jeremiah Smith's and Malachi Tony's
- 2:22Speaker 2: out there and murderers row. They have to figure things out.
- 2:25Speaker 2: And the running game seemed to be working at times,
- 2:29Speaker 2: but they just, they seemed half pregnant with the running
- 2:31Speaker 2: game to me. I don't know what you saw Cole.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:34Speaker 3: So the first thing that I saw was very conservative
- 2:37Speaker 3: on both sides of the football. When it came to
- 2:38Speaker 3: the play designs by Charlie Weiss jr. And by Blake Baker,
- 2:41Speaker 3: they did not send a lot of blitzes, which allowed,
- 2:43Speaker 3: I think trade had to get into a rhythm. And
- 2:45Speaker 3: once you did that, you were able to realize that,
- 2:47Speaker 3: We're going to play off-ball? Okay, he can still beat us.
- 2:49Speaker 3: We have to pressure him into making mistakes. And I
- 2:52Speaker 3: thought that that opened up an avenue. The other thing
- 2:54Speaker 3: is that I thought the play calling from Charlie Wise Jr.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Was very lackluster in the first quarter.
- 3:00Speaker 3: And really, it took about 18 minutes for them to
- 3:02Speaker 3: get into a motion before they were able to really
- 3:05Speaker 3: get anything going.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Now, partially, the play calling was an issue.
- 3:08Speaker 3: The part that I don't think is getting talked about enough, guys,
- 3:11Speaker 3: Ole Miss whooped them in the trenches on both.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Sides for literally a three and a half quarters.
- 3:16Speaker 3: I mean, there were moments where you saw Sam Levin
- 3:19Speaker 3: and the offensive line hold their own. But you also
- 3:21Speaker 3: saw Sam Levin have to take off and run and
- 3:23Speaker 3: play like a chicken with his head cut off. And
- 3:25Speaker 3: when he's out of structure, he's one of the most
- 3:28Speaker 3: fun quarterbacks to see play. Kind of like Johnny Mansell,
- 3:30Speaker 3: as Tom pointed out. But they bullied them in the trenches.
- 3:35Speaker 3: That really took away a lot of the elements of...
- 3:38Speaker 3: We want to establish the run with Dylan Jones. Well,
- 3:40Speaker 3: we can't establish the run with Dylan Jones. So now
- 3:42Speaker 3: we've got to throw downfield. Or their secondary is making
- 3:45Speaker 3: plays and they're putting pressure on Sam Leavitt.
- 3:47Speaker 4: The base is going to have to go ahead.
- 3:48Speaker 3: And throw one up and pray that it lands in
- 3:51Speaker 3: the hand of a non-defender or at least an incompletion.
- 3:55Speaker 4: That way we can go ahead and reassess.
- 3:57Speaker 3: So credit on both sides here of the conservative play calling,
- 4:00Speaker 3: I think from LSU in the early stages and Ole
- 4:03Speaker 3: Miss getting after them and kind of sending a message.
- 4:06Speaker 3: I thought that when you got to the third quarter,
- 4:08Speaker 3: you started to get a run game going. Dylan Jones
- 4:10Speaker 3: started to kind of feel himself. And they were kind
- 4:12Speaker 3: of breaking on through that second and third level.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Some missed tackles.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Some very crucial missed tackles by Ole Miss that allowed
- 4:20Speaker 3: them to get on in.
- 4:21Speaker 4: I thought that Ole Miss had.
- 4:22Speaker 3: A couple of really, really good play designs. But Sam
- 4:25Speaker 3: Levitt showed you what were the flashes at Arizona State.
- 4:28Speaker 3: That one touchdown pass to Winston Watkins. I mean, that's
- 4:31Speaker 3: a highlight play. That's one where you say to yourself,
- 4:34Speaker 3: Tip of the cap, you were able to outdo me.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Good on good and the better one on that situation.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Hey, guys, just a real quick break from the video
- 4:42Speaker 1: to tell you go check out the PrizePix app. We
- 4:44Speaker 1: tell you about them all the time, but all new
- 4:46Speaker 1: users over there who play $ 5 get $ 150 in lineups
- 4:49Speaker 1: instantly if they win using code HMA on their first lineup.
- 4:54Speaker 1: It's not just lineups, though. It's team picks as well.
- 4:57Speaker 1: We've got the Heisman odds right here. Those continue to update.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Trinidad number one. You've got Darian Mensah up there at
- 5:03Speaker 1: number two. Camario Taylor, shout out Mississippi State, number three.
- 5:07Speaker 1: You've got Jeremiah Smith, CJ Carr, Jaden Baugh, all the
- 5:10Speaker 1: way up to number six. Arch Manning, Gunnar Stockton, Julian Sayen,
- 5:13Speaker 1: Malachi Toney, Will Hammond, a ton of names here. You
- 5:16Speaker 1: can go play team picks as well. You can take
- 5:18Speaker 1: first team to score. You can take a bunch of
- 5:21Speaker 1: different picks on the Prize Picks app. Go check them out.
- 5:25Speaker 1: We appreciate them for their support. Now back to the
- 5:27Speaker 1: clip on the Power 2.
- 5:29Speaker 3: But again, they were also able to create opportunities defensively
- 5:32Speaker 3: because they started sending blitzes. They started sending design packages
- 5:35Speaker 3: of making Trey.Chambers kind of play with more speed. And
- 5:39Speaker 3: so they were late to the process in a lot
- 5:42Speaker 3: of those areas. But when they finally got going, it
- 5:45Speaker 3: was good. It just also was too little too late.
- 5:48Speaker 3: And then when you had an opportunity to kind of
- 5:49Speaker 3: put the nail in the coffin, Ole Miss gets a
- 5:52Speaker 3: stop and they get a big step up and then
- 5:54Speaker 3: they drive down the field.
- 5:55Speaker 4: And then you get an opportunity on fourth down and
- 5:57Speaker 4: you do convert.
- 5:58Speaker 3: And you get into the red zone, and you get
- 5:59Speaker 3: four chances, and ultimately, because of Cam Franklin's helmet, is
- 6:04Speaker 3: just in the right place at the right time, ball
- 6:06Speaker 3: ricochets up at the top, and it's a pick, and
- 6:08Speaker 3: it ends the game. Like, that's what this came on
- 6:10Speaker 3: down to. I do think the loss to Trey Des
- 6:12Speaker 3: Green is big, though. And I say that because Trey
- 6:15Speaker 3: Des Green, in that situation inside the red zone, you can,
- 6:19Speaker 3: it's their version of Trey Des Chambers where you just
- 6:22Speaker 3: need a quarterback to be able to deliver.
- 6:24Speaker 4: You don't have an answer for that in the red zone.
- 6:26Speaker 3: There's not a defensive back or a linebacker that can
- 6:30Speaker 3: do both things of covering him with the speed or
- 6:33Speaker 3: the size to be able to win those battles.
- 6:35Speaker 4: And when he got taken out of the game, you
- 6:37Speaker 4: lose that.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Elemental access of what's so important for you to be
- 6:41Speaker 3: able to win in those short field positions, especially for
- 6:44Speaker 3: when it is that close of a matchup.
- 6:46Speaker 4: So I thought that was a really big deal. I
- 6:49Speaker 4: will agree with Tom on one thing.
- 6:51Speaker 3: This is a wide receiver room that reminds me so
- 6:54Speaker 3: much right now of the Green Bay Packers. And honestly,
- 6:56Speaker 3: maybe even what we could say with Notre Dame. You
- 7:00Speaker 3: have a lot of good wide receivers. Do you have
- 7:02Speaker 3: a game changer? Do you have that dude that you're
- 7:05Speaker 3: just like, because I can tell you right now, when
- 7:07Speaker 3: I look at Ole Miss, Horatio Fields is a fun player.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Traylon Ray stepped on up and had his moments yesterday.
- 7:13Speaker 3: 99.9% of the time, got to have a moment, that
- 7:16Speaker 3: ball is going to deuce Alexander. And you don't have
- 7:19Speaker 3: a Deuce Alexander. You got some good players, Jackson Harris,
- 7:23Speaker 3: Trey Wilson, Winnie Watkins, I think he'd be fun.
- 7:26Speaker 4: You don't have that guy right now.
- 7:27Speaker 3: And because you don't have that guy, it makes it
- 7:30Speaker 3: more challenging for a quarterback that still is trying to
- 7:33Speaker 3: learn to play within the system to be able to
- 7:35Speaker 3: trust he's going to come on up and deliver.
- 7:38Speaker 4: He's going to make that moment happen. And I think
- 7:41Speaker 4: that that ultimately did hurt at times for LSU.
- 7:44Speaker 3: I also think Lane put themselves in a position really
- 7:48Speaker 3: early on to where, again, the conservative play calling and
- 7:51Speaker 3: maybe the atmosphere, I don't know what it was. But
- 7:53Speaker 3: they made it to where they allowed Ole Miss to
- 7:56Speaker 3: gain so much momentum. And I give a lot of
- 7:57Speaker 3: credit for them fighting on back end in the third quarter.
- 8:00Speaker 3: If they don't get that interception, and let's just say
- 8:02Speaker 3: that they score and it's now 31-7, you lose all
- 8:06Speaker 3: the juice at that point.
- 8:07Speaker 4: You do. So I give credit. But I also think
- 8:11Speaker 4: that this is the beauty of what is college football.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Where in one moment we are going to overreact to,
- 8:17Speaker 3: holy crap, what a play in week one.
- 8:21Speaker 4: To more of, this is who we are as a program.
- 8:24Speaker 3: And there are some faults and there are some limitations
- 8:27Speaker 3: that we may end up going 10-2.
- 8:30Speaker 4: We may end up going 9-3.
- 8:32Speaker 3: But there are some things that we're definitely being over-enhanced
- 8:35Speaker 3: because it's the first time you ever saw us play.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I think some of the conservative play calling in the
- 8:41Speaker 2: first half was because Sam Levitt was rocked. I don't
- 8:44Speaker 2: think they trusted Sam Leavitt in the early part of
- 8:47Speaker 2: the game. You had 43 rushing attempts, 27 passing attempts.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I know this is a team that wants to establish
- 8:54Speaker 2: the run, and that's a hallmark of Lane Kiffin, but
- 8:56Speaker 2: that's quite the imbalance for Lane Kiffin. Assuming what we
- 9:00Speaker 2: saw against Ole Miss and Louisville, you would think that
- 9:03Speaker 2: LSU saw opportunities to throw the football against Ole Miss
- 9:07Speaker 2: in this game. I think there were some things that
- 9:10Speaker 2: Ole Miss brought to the table. I mentioned their defensive
- 9:12Speaker 2: line earlier. I thought the interior of their defensive line
- 9:15Speaker 2: wrecked LSU's offensive line throughout the night. And TJ, going forward,
- 9:20Speaker 2: I feel like this is still a really dangerous team,
- 9:23Speaker 2: and they're going to get better from this. And you
- 9:25Speaker 2: hope you get Tredez Green back, and you hope that
- 9:28Speaker 2: you're able to get some pieces back on the defensive
- 9:30Speaker 2: side as well. LSU is still a very dangerous animal
- 9:33Speaker 2: within the SEC.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Yes but at the same time i think that they're
- 9:36Speaker 3: right back into more so the conversation of this is
- 9:39Speaker 3: a year to where every win is going to be
- 9:41Speaker 3: important for the future but if you don't make the
- 9:43Speaker 3: playoff it's not the end i'll be all the way
- 9:45Speaker 3: that someone make it out to be if you talk
- 9:46Speaker 3: to lsu fans and then you talk to the national
- 9:48Speaker 3: media the national media is pumping up the chest up
- 9:51Speaker 3: you got to make the playoff in year one because
- 9:53Speaker 3: of you left oxford and then you ask the people
- 9:56Speaker 3: in baton rouge they're like we don't look if they
- 9:58Speaker 3: just get nine and three and they show that they're
- 10:00Speaker 3: on the come up with a number one recruiting class
- 10:02Speaker 3: and they have the funds and the ducks in order
- 10:04Speaker 3: for us to have a great foundation that's more so
- 10:07Speaker 3: what we care about and there probably is truth somewhere
- 10:09Speaker 3: in the middle of that but I again think that
- 10:13Speaker 3: it's week one overreactions at its finest. LSU is a
- 10:17Speaker 3: wagon that can't be stopped because you played against Clemson with,
- 10:21Speaker 3: let me remind everybody, Chad Morris.
- 10:24Speaker 4: As your offensive coordinator. You ain't going up against Chad
- 10:26Speaker 4: Morris every single week.
- 10:28Speaker 3: You're going to get tested. And you're going to get
- 10:30Speaker 3: tested next week against Texas A & M even. So
- 10:32Speaker 3: it's not like it's one of those things to where
- 10:34Speaker 3: it's just this game. I think that LSU is in
- 10:37Speaker 3: a good spot. You also won't be going up against
- 10:42Speaker 3: Trinidad Chambis week in and week out.
- 10:44Speaker 4: You just won't. Like that's kind of the blessing.
- 10:46Speaker 3: They will find a way to be able, I think, get.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Into that 9-3 range.
- 10:51Speaker 3: But 9-3 is probably not going to the playoff this year,
- 10:54Speaker 3: at least with their schedule. It was a big win,
- 10:57Speaker 3: but it was a reality check that there are some
- 10:58Speaker 3: things that you have got to clean up on both
- 11:00Speaker 3: sides of the football. And it's really going to be
- 11:02Speaker 3: interesting to see how they respond next week against Texas
- 11:04Speaker 3: A & M on both sides, but I think offensively
- 11:07Speaker 3: because you will not have that security blanket known as
- 11:10Speaker 3: trade-in screen, in my opinion. So how do you be
- 11:12Speaker 3: able to counteract that? And how do you get off
- 11:14Speaker 3: to a faster start?
- 11:15Speaker 4: Like, honestly, Lane, no offense, man.
- 11:18Speaker 3: I know that you have some demons and you were
- 11:19Speaker 3: able to conquer them. And I applaud you for that.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Let some of those demons out against Texas A &
- 11:24Speaker 3: M secondary in the first drive or two.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Like, you've got to lay down the haymaker.
- 11:28Speaker 2: They'll have opportunities against Texas A & M.
- 11:31Speaker 1: We'll get to them in just a moment. Cole, are
- 11:33Speaker 1: they still in the playoff to you?
- 11:35Speaker 4: I wonder if TJ's muted and he doesn't know it.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Oh, I can hear him.
- 11:39Speaker 4: I can't at all.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Well, ask Cole what I said, then I'll refresh real
- 11:43Speaker 1: quick while we go to the next one. But are
- 11:44Speaker 1: they still a playoff team to Cole?
- 11:46Speaker 2: TJ was asking if you, Cole, think that LSU was
- 11:49Speaker 2: still a playoff team.
- 11:50Speaker 3: They weren't a playoff team for me going into the year,
- 11:52Speaker 3: so they're not a playoff team for me now. Again,
- 11:55Speaker 3: this game, you guys remember when we did our access
- 11:58Speaker 3: and we did our initial poll, you had LSU in
- 12:01Speaker 3: the playoff and I had Ole Miss in the playoff.
- 12:04Speaker 4: I had Ole Miss in the playoff because they won
- 12:05Speaker 4: this game. So this game now is the reason why.
