- October 23 God Is Good and Evil Is Not Trivial Topic: Accountability. Scripture: Nahum 1:2–3 2 Yahweh is a jealous God and avenges. Yahweh avenges and is full of wrath. Yahweh takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he maintains wrath against his enemies. 3 Yahweh is slow to anger, and great in power, and will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. Yahweh has his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. Context Nahum announces judgment against Nineveh, capital of the Assyrian empire, notorious for violence and oppression. The prophet holds together God’s patience, power, goodness, and refusal to treat evil as morally insignificant. Let It Shape Your Life We often want God to be serious about evil when it hurts us and endlessly casual about it when it is ours. Nahum will not let those instincts define God. He is “slow to anger,” but He does not call cruelty harmless. That matters for anyone who has been wounded by violence, exploitation, or abuse. Biblical grace does not require pretending evil was no big deal. Accountability is part of moral goodness. At the same time, Nahum is not permission for personal revenge. God’s justice is not an excuse for us to become cruel in the name of righteousness. The passage should produce both comfort and humility: comfort because evil does not escape God’s notice, humility because none of us gets to define ourselves as permanently outside moral examination. Grace is meaningful precisely because wrong is real. Think About It Where are you tempted either to minimize real wrongdoing or to use your concern for justice as permission for personal vengeance?
