- 0:00Good morning , Spy Traders !
- 0:02I'm your host , Monty Moneybags , and it's 6 am on Wednesday , September 24th , 2025 , Pacific time .
- 0:10Grab your coffee , because we've got a lot to unpack after a wild day on Wall Street .
- 0:15Yesterday saw the market take a breather , with all three major U.S.
- 0:19stock indexes ending in the red .
- 0:22After a fantastic threeday rally to record highs , profittaking definitely kicked in .
- 0:28The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.2% , the S&P 500 fell 0.6% , and the techheavy Nasdaq Composite saw the steepest drop , tumbling 1% .
- 0:41The CBOE Volatility Index , or VIX , rose , signaling a bit more apprehension in the air .
- 0:48This pullback was fueled by some weaker earnings reports and , notably , comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell , who cautioned about ' highly overvalued ' asset prices .
- 1:00However , looking at U.S.
- 1:01stock futures this morning , they're showing a rebound , so it's a dynamic situation .
- 1:06Digging deeper into sectors , it was a mixed bag .
- 1:09The Energy Select Sector SPDR , ticker XLE , absolutely shone , gaining 1.7% thanks to a surge in crude oil prices .
- 1:19On the flip side , Technology , represented by XLK , and Consumer Discretionary , XLY , both fell by 0.9% .
- 1:28Individual stock movers included NVIDIA , NVDA , which pulled back 2.8% after its big AI investment announcement earlier in the week .
- 1:38But it wasn't all bad for tech ; Micron Technology , MU , saw its shares jump over 2% in afterhours trading following a robust earnings beat and strong guidance .
- 1:49Teradyne , TER , also surged earlier in the week due to strong demand and a partnership with TSMC .
- 1:57However , Kenvue , KVUE , the maker of Tylenol , dropped on news linking the medication to increased autism risk , and homebuilder Lennar , LEN , declined after missing forecasts .
- 2:10In broader news , the Fed cut the federal funds rate by 25 basis points in September , the first cut since December , setting the new range at 4.00%4.25% .
- 2:22They project more cuts by yearend , but Powell's caution about equity valuations and inflation risks adds a layer of complexity .
- 2:31Inflation itself is a mixed signal ; the annual CPIU rose to 2.9% in August , and consumer longterm inflation expectations are up .
- 2:41Job gains are moderating , with unemployment at 4.3% , its highest in nearly four years , though still historically low .
- 2:51Consumer sentiment took a significant dive in September , the lowest since May , largely due to anxiety about business conditions , labor markets , and inflation .
- 3:01And on the commodity front , gold reached a new alltime high of 3,824.60 an ounce , with gold ETFs seeing record inflows .
- 3:12So , what does this all mean for your portfolio ?
- 3:15We're seeing a fascinating tugofwar .
- 3:18On one side , you have optimistic factors like the Fed's rate cuts and continued investment in AI .
- 3:25On the other , there's the Fed's warning on overvalued assets , persistent inflation concerns , slowing economic growth , and weak consumer sentiment .
- 3:34This tension calls for a balanced approach .
- 3:37First , consider leaning into defensive and valueoriented sectors .
- 3:42Given the Fed's concerns and moderating economy , these can offer stability .
- 3:48For example , the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLE , is doing great with rising crude oil prices and can act as an inflation hedge .
- 3:58Similarly , with gold hitting record highs , the SPDR Gold Shares , GLD , is a strong recommendation as a classic safehaven asset .
- 4:08You might also look at ETFs like the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLP , as these companies tend to be resilient .
- 4:18Second , approach growth and technology with caution , but look for opportunistic entry points .
- 4:23While the tech sector saw profittaking , the longterm AI trend is powerful .
- 4:28On significant dips , consider diversified exposure through the Invesco QQQ Trust , QQQ , or the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLK .
- 4:41For individual stocks , NVIDIA , NVDA , is a key AI player and might be considered on further weakness , and Micron Technology , MU , with its strong earnings , could be an attractive specific tech play .
- 4:53Third , maintain your core fixed income holdings .
- 4:57The Fed's rate cuts suggest a more favorable environment for bonds .
- 5:01ETFs like the iShares Core U.S.
- 5:03Aggregate Bond ETF , AGG , or the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF , BND , can provide portfolio stability and income .
- 5:14Finally , exercise caution in highly cyclical or consumer discretionary areas .
- 5:19With dipping consumer sentiment and moderating job growth , sectors heavily reliant on robust consumer spending , like those in the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR , XLY , could face headwinds .
- 5:34Avoid overexposure to individual companies in this space , especially those like Kenvue or Lennar , which have faced recent challenges .
- 5:44In short , a balanced portfolio combining defensive plays with selective , highquality growth investments , alongside core fixedincome allocations , is the way to go .
- 5:55Keep an eye on inflation , employment , and the Fed's signals .
- 5:59That's all for this episode of Spy Trader !
- 6:02I'm Monty Moneybags , and I'll catch you next time .
