- 0:03Speaker 1: the Round Table by Andrew Lang. This LibriVox recording is
- 0:07Speaker 1: in the public domain. Part two Story seven an adventure
- 0:12Speaker 1: of Sir Gawaine. When Sir Gawaine departed, he rode long
- 0:17Speaker 1: without any adventure, from Whitsunday to Michaelmas. He rode and
- 0:22Speaker 1: found not the tenth part of the adventures he was
- 0:25Speaker 1: wont to do. But it befell on a day that
- 0:28Speaker 1: he met Sir Ector de Maris, at which they rejoiced exceedingly,
- 0:32Speaker 1: complaining to one another of the lack of adventure in
- 0:35Speaker 1: the quest on which they were set. Truly, said Sir
- 0:38Speaker 1: Gawaine to Sir Ector, I am nigh weary of this
- 0:41Speaker 1: quest and loath to follow it to further strange countries.
- 0:46Speaker 1: One thing seems strange to me, said Sir Ector. I
- 0:49Speaker 1: have met with twenty knights, and they all complain as
- 0:52Speaker 1: I do. I wonder, said Sir Gawaine, where your brother is.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I can hear nothing of him, answered Sir Ector, nor
- 1:00Speaker 1: of Sir Galahad, Sir Percival, or Sir Bor's. But they farewell,
- 1:04Speaker 1: no doubt, for they have no peers. As they sat
- 1:08Speaker 1: talking there appeared before them a hand showing unto the elbow,
- 1:13Speaker 1: covered with red samite, and holding a great candle that
- 1:17Speaker 1: burned right clear. And the hand passed into the chapel
- 1:20Speaker 1: and vanished. They knew not where. Then they heard a
- 1:24Speaker 1: voice which said, knights full of evil faith and poor belief,
- 1:29Speaker 1: these two things have failed you, and therefore you may
- 1:32Speaker 1: not come to the adventure of the Holy Grail and thereat.
- 1:35Speaker 1: They went to a holy man, to whom they confess
- 1:38Speaker 1: their sins. Said he, this is the meaning of the vision.
- 1:42Speaker 1: You have failed in three things, charity, fasting, and truth,
- 1:46Speaker 1: and have been great murderers, Sir, said Gawaine, by your words,
- 1:51Speaker 1: it seems that our sins will not let us labor
- 1:54Speaker 1: in that quest. Truly answered the hermit, there be an
- 1:58Speaker 1: hundred such as you, to whom it will bring naught
- 2:01Speaker 1: but shame. So Gawaine departed and followed Sir Ector, who
- 2:05Speaker 1: had ridden on before end of Part two, Story seven,
