- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Today in the show, we're here for fresh radio, in
- 0:24Speaker 1: which we're getting updates from hunters all across the country
- 0:27Speaker 1: on the latest deer activity, current conditions, and the tactics
- 0:31Speaker 1: that can work for you right now. All right, welcome
- 0:39Speaker 1: to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm well, I already
- 0:44Speaker 1: said that I'm your host, Mark Kenyan. You already heard
- 0:45Speaker 1: that in intro. What I'm trying to stay here is
- 0:47Speaker 1: the Wired Podcast is brought to you by on X
- 0:50Speaker 1: and Uh, I'm off my game today, but it's for
- 0:53Speaker 1: good reason. It's been a busy few days, uh, because
- 0:56Speaker 1: I've had some hunting success. And with me is Spencer
- 0:59Speaker 1: new Hearth, who has had some hunting success. And we're
- 1:02Speaker 1: here for fresh radio in which we're gonna get to
- 1:05Speaker 1: some reports very soon from hunters all across the country,
- 1:09Speaker 1: getting us updates on what is happening in the white
- 1:11Speaker 1: tailed woods. Spencer, what's happening your white tail woods? Though?
- 1:15Speaker 1: Kick us off with some good news, could you? Yeah? Um, well,
- 1:19Speaker 1: I think two weeks ago, Mark, you and I tagged
- 1:21Speaker 1: a buck for the first time ever, maybe in like
- 1:24Speaker 1: the same couple of days span, and then we did
- 1:27Speaker 1: it again this week. You killed tran in Michigan and
- 1:30Speaker 1: I just killed a buck in Montana. Um. The thing
- 1:36Speaker 1: that yeah, yeah, it's syncd up rout um. The movement.
- 1:40Speaker 1: The movement was good. Um, it was kind of it
- 1:43Speaker 1: was the kind of situation and the kind of movement
- 1:47Speaker 1: that you would sort of only encounter at the end
- 1:50Speaker 1: of November. And what I mean by that is these
- 1:53Speaker 1: deer weren't in like an amazing place as far as
- 1:58Speaker 1: what this property was. It pretty poor cover, but it
- 2:02Speaker 1: had some food. Um, and the weather has been really
- 2:05Speaker 1: mild here, so deer weren't like super congregated. But there
- 2:09Speaker 1: were these number of different dough groups out in this field.
- 2:12Speaker 1: And as studies have shown in the past that this
- 2:15Speaker 1: is the time of year, the end of November, when
- 2:17Speaker 1: mature bucks will take the most risks. Mississippi State University
- 2:23Speaker 1: specifically showed UM on some radio collar deer that two
- 2:27Speaker 1: and a half year old and three and a half
- 2:28Speaker 1: yield bucks take the most risk during peak rut, but
- 2:31Speaker 1: four and a half and older bucks take the most
- 2:35Speaker 1: take the most risk during post runt um. So what
- 2:38Speaker 1: I had kind of witnessed was that sort of thing.
- 2:41Speaker 1: There were this dough groups feeding out into this field,
- 2:45Speaker 1: and although I could glass these basket racks that were,
- 2:49Speaker 1: you know, largely uninterested and sort of bedded in a
- 2:52Speaker 1: fence line, there was a mature buck out in this
- 2:54Speaker 1: field that we're hounding them, and they were he was
- 2:56Speaker 1: going from dough group to doe group until he wound
- 2:59Speaker 1: up in the doe group that was in my lap.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And that was sort of like, you know, this is
- 3:05Speaker 1: the only time of year that you would sort of
- 3:07Speaker 1: see that thing happen with a mature buck out there
- 3:10Speaker 1: chasing and looking um and then the other box just
- 3:13Speaker 1: sort of sitting on the sideline. Yeah, that's that's an
- 3:16Speaker 1: interesting observation. And you're absolutely right. Those studies certainly back
- 3:21Speaker 1: up what I've seen anecdotally that you know, later in
- 3:24Speaker 1: November and even the very beginning December, it could be
- 3:28Speaker 1: a little bit slower. I mean, generally it is slower
- 3:31Speaker 1: than it would be on November seven or something. But
- 3:33Speaker 1: when you do see a buck that's still on a
- 3:35Speaker 1: dough or is out cruising. It almost always seems to
- 3:38Speaker 1: be one of those older deer I can point to
- 3:40Speaker 1: year after year having that kind of thing happened, and
- 3:43Speaker 1: even places where there's not tons of mature bucks. Um
- 3:46Speaker 1: and and something pretty similar to that is what happened
- 3:49Speaker 1: to me a couple of days ago. Um, which which
- 3:51Speaker 1: I won't cover today, but next week's podcast I will
- 3:55Speaker 1: have the full story of my hunt. Um. But yeah,
- 3:59Speaker 1: I like my big reminder to myself over the last week,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and if I was still hunting, what I'd be telling
- 4:07Speaker 1: myself for next week is just that the game's not over.
- 4:12Speaker 1: The buzzer has not sounded. They're still good stuff going,
- 4:16Speaker 1: they're still running activity happening. Um. You know, there's like
- 4:20Speaker 1: you just described, there's these mature bucks that they know
- 4:23Speaker 1: that there's still a few doughs that are going to
- 4:25Speaker 1: be in heat. They've been around the block, they've seen it,
- 4:28Speaker 1: they've experienced it, and they are determined to ah, you know,
- 4:34Speaker 1: spread their genes as much as they possibly can, so
- 4:37Speaker 1: they're gonna keep at it. So you have that going
- 4:39Speaker 1: for you, and then fast forward about a week and
- 4:42Speaker 1: we get into December, and then you're gonna have the
- 4:45Speaker 1: situation wherein at least healthy balanced dear populations, you're gonna
- 4:49Speaker 1: have those dough fonds that will come into estrus about
- 4:53Speaker 1: a month after most of the adults did, so you
- 4:55Speaker 1: can get these fawns that we not always but you're
- 4:58Speaker 1: gonna have a handful of these dear p thing into heat.
- 5:01Speaker 1: You know that first we could December, sometimes the second
- 5:03Speaker 1: week in December, and if you have that, you can
- 5:06Speaker 1: get this big flurry of of almost November type running
- 5:10Speaker 1: activity around that day or two when that happens. Um
- 5:13Speaker 1: So I would definitely still be out there. I would
- 5:16Speaker 1: definitely still be looking for that kind of activity. For
- 5:19Speaker 1: me at this time of year, I'm thinking thick, nasty cover.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I'm thinking any kind of sanctuary where you know, these
- 5:25Speaker 1: deer that have been pressured for the last month by
- 5:28Speaker 1: a lot of hunters, whether that be just rut bow
- 5:30Speaker 1: hunters or gun hunters. That's where a lot of this
- 5:32Speaker 1: activity is going to kind of flock too, because they're
- 5:35Speaker 1: trying to get away from people. But then, secondly, the
- 5:39Speaker 1: best food source. Almost the entire deer herd is starting
- 5:43Speaker 1: to think more and more about food now after the
- 5:45Speaker 1: run everything everybody needs to kind of refuel. So finding
- 5:48Speaker 1: like what that hot food sources right now, if you
- 5:51Speaker 1: can get those two things together, some type of relatively
- 5:54Speaker 1: unpressured spot mixed with like the premier food source for
- 5:58Speaker 1: the moment, that is a recipe p for success. UM.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And you know I wrote that to success recently. I've
- 6:05Speaker 1: written that to success a couple of years ago. UM
- 6:08Speaker 1: with a fawn popping in the heat, and I killed
- 6:11Speaker 1: that big frank buck UM on a food source doing
- 6:14Speaker 1: that exact thing. So don't give up, folks, It's there's
- 6:19Speaker 1: still some good things ahead. Yeah, and you mentioned finding
- 6:23Speaker 1: a sanctuary in their market. I think that is probably
- 6:27Speaker 1: the number one thing to look for right now. UM.
- 6:30Speaker 1: All season on Red Fresh Radio we talk about weather
- 6:33Speaker 1: and moon UM and crop status in different food sources.
- 6:37Speaker 1: But right now, I would say the greatest outside factor
- 6:41Speaker 1: determining buck movement and deer movement in general is just
- 6:45Speaker 1: what the hunting pressure has been like now, maybe more
- 6:47Speaker 1: than ever, there are more gun seasons open across the country. UM.
- 6:51Speaker 1: State agencies sort of intentionally have their gun seasons happen
- 6:55Speaker 1: over you know, the week of Thanksgiving, because it gives
- 6:58Speaker 1: more people a chance to be in the woods, and so, uh,
- 7:02Speaker 1: we're now in that, and that means that there's going
- 7:04Speaker 1: to be as many hunters, you know, in the woods,
- 7:07Speaker 1: you know, last week, this week, next week, as there
- 7:09Speaker 1: are throughout the entire season. So finding a place that
- 7:12Speaker 1: other people are whether it's just an overlooked slew that
- 7:17Speaker 1: people wouldn't think would hold dear, or it's just hunting
- 7:20Speaker 1: on a Wednesday instead of a Saturday, avoiding hunting pressure
- 7:24Speaker 1: is probably the best thing you can try to do
- 7:26Speaker 1: right now. Yeah, Yeah, that's that's the truth. It's not
- 7:30Speaker 1: terribly complicated. It's just looking at the simple facts of
- 7:34Speaker 1: of what Dear need and want. They want nutrition right
- 7:37Speaker 1: now and they want to get away from people find
- 7:39Speaker 1: it and uh, off you go. So I we're you know,
- 7:45Speaker 1: we're also kind of getting back into soon here, and
- 7:48Speaker 1: I guess I'm interested to hear what the guests have
- 7:50Speaker 1: to say today. But you mentioned a few weeks ago,
- 7:53Speaker 1: how you know, in early November, mid November, it's kind
- 7:57Speaker 1: of like it's gonna be gung ho just about everywhere.
- 7:59Speaker 1: These report wars we're getting aren't necessarily going to tell
- 8:02Speaker 1: you about something surprising. We are re entering a phase
- 8:05Speaker 1: of the year where we might hear something from someone
- 8:08Speaker 1: that is surprising that we could take advantage of, or
- 8:10Speaker 1: we might have one of those fronts coming next week
- 8:13Speaker 1: in December that could have really supercharged things again. So
- 8:16Speaker 1: I bring that up simply to say that I am
- 8:19Speaker 1: even more excited than I have been over the past
- 8:20Speaker 1: couple of weeks to hear from the folks today, because
- 8:23Speaker 1: I'm curious about what people are thinking about these next
- 8:25Speaker 1: seven days as as we are in that transition. I
- 8:28Speaker 1: think we're in a transition phase from that peak rut
- 8:31Speaker 1: type of hunting that we've had the last three or
- 8:32Speaker 1: four weeks into this new part of the year. So
- 8:35Speaker 1: who do we have coming up, Spencer? We have Adam
- 8:38Speaker 1: Keith from Landing Legacy in Missouri, than Ryan Nates from
- 8:41Speaker 1: Florida Outdoor Experience in Florida, and then in New Jersey
- 8:44Speaker 1: it's Greg Litzinger from bow Hunting Fiend, and then Dilan
- 8:48Speaker 1: Lands from Breaking Point TV in Wisconsin. Nice, Uh, is
- 8:53Speaker 1: there anything else you want to cover from a deer
- 8:55Speaker 1: perspective before we I've got a couple of little updates
- 8:58Speaker 1: for people I want to share, but anything year related
- 9:00Speaker 1: before we get into that one final thing Um, I
- 9:04Speaker 1: didn't give a lot of details on how I killed
- 9:07Speaker 1: my buck this last weekend in Montana, but there's a
- 9:10Speaker 1: whole story behind it. Um that has to do with
- 9:14Speaker 1: whether or not you believe in karma and an owl
- 9:17Speaker 1: that was crucified in a barbed wire fence and the
- 9:21Speaker 1: Montana Raptor Conservation Center and all that stuff. And actually
- 9:24Speaker 1: talked about it on the Meat Eater podcast that will
- 9:27Speaker 1: drop next week. UM, So if you listen to that,
- 9:31Speaker 1: you'll hear sort of the more entertaining side of that
- 9:34Speaker 1: hunt rather than the informative side of that hunt. And
- 9:37Speaker 1: so that's my plug for the next Meat Eater podcast
- 9:39Speaker 1: on I'm on, which I think is November. Sounds interesting. Uh,
- 9:43Speaker 1: We're gonna keep the plugs going because we are coming
- 9:45Speaker 1: into the holiday weekend, which means two things. Means shopping
- 9:49Speaker 1: opportunities for a lot of people, and then secondly, it
- 9:52Speaker 1: means maybe a little free time to kick back and
- 9:55Speaker 1: enjoy some deer hunting content. Uh. So barre with me
- 9:59Speaker 1: for some plug. Number one, our third episode of the
- 10:03Speaker 1: back forty this year came out a few days ago.
- 10:06Speaker 1: That one's got our buddy Tony Peterson out there with me.
- 10:08Speaker 1: As we're prepping the farm for hunting season, putting up stands,
- 10:11Speaker 1: checking trail cameras, getting a tower blind set up from
- 10:13Speaker 1: my dad really sets up everything that I know you
- 10:17Speaker 1: guys have heard in the podcast happened. Um, So check
- 10:20Speaker 1: that one out. And then this coming Sunday, which is
- 10:23Speaker 1: the twenty nine. They think the episode with my dad's
- 10:27Speaker 1: hunt is dropping. That one's awesome. It's it was a
- 10:31Speaker 1: really special experience to share with him, and I'm really
- 10:34Speaker 1: excited to be able to share with you guys. So
- 10:36Speaker 1: check out the back forty good stuff coming there. Um.
- 10:40Speaker 1: In other news, we have a couple of different interesting
- 10:44Speaker 1: sales running over at the Mediator. Within the Mediator world,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I guess you could say we got a Black Friday
- 10:50Speaker 1: sale going on from Friday through Monday over at the
- 10:53Speaker 1: Mediator website off almost everything on the website, So going
- 10:57Speaker 1: over to the meat eater dot com for that. There's
- 11:00Speaker 1: also a Black Friday stale going on for First Light.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I think you're calling the gravy Boat Sail. So if
- 11:05Speaker 1: you want some new hunting gear, if you've been seeing
- 11:07Speaker 1: the stuff that Spencer and I've been wearing and you
- 11:09Speaker 1: want to get I don't know, maybe like the Chamberlain
- 11:11Speaker 1: puffy jacket or the Sanctuary bibbs for late season deer hunting. Uh,
- 11:15Speaker 1: this is a great time to do it again. It's
- 11:18Speaker 1: close to site wide off a bunch of stuff. So
- 11:22Speaker 1: that's all over at First Light dot com. Uh what else?
- 11:26Speaker 1: I think? The only other big thing is that over
- 11:28Speaker 1: you know, the whole Mediator team contributed in one way
- 11:30Speaker 1: or another. Two. The newest book by Steve Rinella, The
- 11:34Speaker 1: Will the Mediator Guide to Wilderness Skills and Survival. Is
- 11:37Speaker 1: that right, Spencer? That's correct? So that's coming out any
- 11:42Speaker 1: day now too. I think December one, I think somewhere
- 11:46Speaker 1: around there. So a lot of interesting things coming up.
- 11:49Speaker 1: You can see it all over the media dot com
- 11:52Speaker 1: as well as bunch of articles by Spencer and I too.
- 11:54Speaker 1: So those are my spiels and I'm gonna send folks
- 11:57Speaker 1: to check out Spencer anything else people should be looking for? No, uh,
- 12:01Speaker 1: like I hope our listeners do. I'm taking advantage of
- 12:03Speaker 1: our sales and pretty much every Christmas gift for people
- 12:07Speaker 1: in my life that I buy Christmas gifts for getting
- 12:09Speaker 1: something from First Light or Meat Eater. So there's a
- 12:12Speaker 1: whole diverse group of stuff on our website and First Light,
- 12:16Speaker 1: so I hope you will find something there as well. Yeah,
- 12:18Speaker 1: not to mention my book, that Wild Country. It's for
- 12:22Speaker 1: sale in the media website. To Spencer, that's what you
- 12:24Speaker 1: should buy, all your buddies, I'll buy you. I'll buy you.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Don't want to I don't want to copy. I've got
- 12:30Speaker 1: too damn many of those things sitting on myself already.
- 12:32Speaker 1: And then I'll sign it. Okay, now that would be interesting,
- 12:35Speaker 1: all right. I think let's get to our interviews this week.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Mark sounds good, Thanks Spencer. Our interviews this week are
- 12:43Speaker 1: presented by Trophy Ridge. Head over to trophy Ridge dot
- 12:46Speaker 1: com to check out there all new for one lineup
- 12:49Speaker 1: of top of the line releases from t Handles to
- 12:53Speaker 1: Risk Releases. They have a premium option for everyone. That's
- 12:56Speaker 1: trophy Ridge dot com. Alright, and joining us on the
- 13:01Speaker 1: line first is Adam Keith from Landing Legacy in Missouri. Now,
- 13:05Speaker 1: Adam and Missouri, what would you say the buck activity
- 13:08Speaker 1: has been Lateley, On a scale of one to ten,
- 13:10Speaker 1: I would say probably around a six or seven. You know,
- 13:14Speaker 1: if you asked me a week ago out, I said
- 13:15Speaker 1: a lot closer to ten But we've kind of just
- 13:18Speaker 1: gone through Missouri firearms season, so a ten day rifle
- 13:21Speaker 1: season where it's the most hunting pressure that the deer
- 13:25Speaker 1: will experience through the course of the fall. Um. But
- 13:28Speaker 1: we are still kind of on the tail end of
- 13:30Speaker 1: peak breeding, the peak rut, So there's still pretty good
- 13:33Speaker 1: movement depending on where you're at. But if you're on
- 13:36Speaker 1: a property that's been over hunted or or has experienced
- 13:39Speaker 1: a lot of hunting, the buck movement is probably a
- 13:43Speaker 1: little bit slower, um, just just because of the hunting pressure,
- 13:47Speaker 1: not because of um the rut being over, the rut
- 13:50Speaker 1: is kind of tailing off. Now we're kind of going
- 13:53Speaker 1: in a post rut. But you could still get some
- 13:57Speaker 1: pretty good hunts depending on what the buckado ratio is
- 13:59Speaker 1: and and just overall what the type of habitat that
- 14:02Speaker 1: you're dealing with on your hunting property. Do you notice
- 14:06Speaker 1: the shift in bedding it all following Missouri's ten day
- 14:09Speaker 1: gun season. Absolutely. Um. You know, before guns season hits,
- 14:15Speaker 1: you're gonna have some uh, the betting could be a
- 14:19Speaker 1: little bit hit or miss. But um as to now,
- 14:25Speaker 1: after gun season, if you're looking for the best betting,
- 14:28Speaker 1: it's like find the thickest stuff you can find in
- 14:31Speaker 1: the area, and that's where you're gonna find a majority
- 14:33Speaker 1: of the deer. What food sources are most relevant right
- 14:36Speaker 1: now for deer hunters in Missouri right now, as we,
- 14:40Speaker 1: like I said, shift out a gun season, it's that
- 14:43Speaker 1: green um. So if you've got winter wheat fields or
- 14:46Speaker 1: braska field, it seems like that's the most attractive food source.
- 14:50Speaker 1: We haven't endured um extremely cold temperatures to put them
- 14:55Speaker 1: really on standing soybeans or standing grain, at least here
- 14:58Speaker 1: in southern Missouri. Guy is in the northern part of
- 15:00Speaker 1: the state might be experiencing that, but for us here
- 15:04Speaker 1: in the in the southern southern part of the state,
- 15:07Speaker 1: it's it's greens. It's green fields, green food sources. What
- 15:11Speaker 1: are you seeing for signmaking right now? It's kind of
- 15:14Speaker 1: tapered off. Um. The scrapes and rubs aren't as um
- 15:19Speaker 1: aren't as popular. You're not seeing as much of that
- 15:23Speaker 1: signmaking going on. But I anticipate that some of that
- 15:26Speaker 1: will pick back up as we get you know, there's
- 15:29Speaker 1: less hunters in the woods, and deer can kind of
- 15:31Speaker 1: go back to their own thing. You typically see some
- 15:34Speaker 1: scrapes start to clear back up as a majority of
- 15:38Speaker 1: the dos are being bred and bucks are now searching
- 15:40Speaker 1: for there's those last few doughs to breed and the
- 15:43Speaker 1: latter part of November. Historically in late November and early
- 15:48Speaker 1: December d s stronger buck movement in the morning or
- 15:51Speaker 1: the evening in Missouri. I would that would be uh
- 15:55Speaker 1: year to year. I would say whether dependent Right now
- 16:00Speaker 1: this year with it being a little bit more mild,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I would say in the morning is the better time
- 16:05Speaker 1: for movement evenings if if it's a cooler evenings shore um.
- 16:10Speaker 1: But right now, if I was banking on it and
- 16:12Speaker 1: I only had to, I could only hunt the morning
- 16:15Speaker 1: or evening, I would be going in morning. I know
- 16:17Speaker 1: you've run a lot of trail cameras. Where do you
- 16:19Speaker 1: want those game camps set up as we exit the rut?
- 16:23Speaker 1: For me, as I go into the rut and then
- 16:26Speaker 1: out of the rut and until late season when I
- 16:30Speaker 1: start getting really really cold temperatures, I have my best
- 16:34Speaker 1: cameras set up on food sources close to betting um
- 16:38Speaker 1: or it could be scrapes close to betting. I want
- 16:41Speaker 1: my trail cameras focused as closely as possible to known
- 16:46Speaker 1: betting areas because I know that's where the deer are
- 16:48Speaker 1: going to be. Food sources could change, but thick cover,
- 16:51Speaker 1: thick betting doesn't change, and that's where a majority of
- 16:54Speaker 1: the deer will be. So if I've got those trail
- 16:56Speaker 1: cameras set up next to those areas, I can monitor
- 16:59Speaker 1: would bucks are in what betting area? Typically, as we
- 17:03Speaker 1: get into December, do you expect to see any new
- 17:05Speaker 1: bucks show up or leave or is that kind of
- 17:08Speaker 1: over with for the year. It depends on in my opinion,
- 17:11Speaker 1: it depends on the food source. If you have a
- 17:13Speaker 1: really attractive food source that can't be found on adjacent farms,
- 17:19Speaker 1: then you will have new bucks show up and hopefully stay,
- 17:22Speaker 1: depending on how long you can hold that deer herd
- 17:26Speaker 1: on your food source. So for me, I have a
- 17:28Speaker 1: big bottom field of soybeans. There's nothing else in my
- 17:31Speaker 1: area like it, and I'm totally anticipating new bucks and
- 17:34Speaker 1: have already experienced them smaller bucks, no hit listeners yet,
- 17:38Speaker 1: but they're gonna move in hopefully um sometime in December
- 17:42Speaker 1: and and and it'll be right for the picking come
- 17:46Speaker 1: muzzleloader season in late December going forward. Then this next
- 17:49Speaker 1: week or So what do you think that Buck ACTV
- 17:51Speaker 1: is going to be on a scale of one to
- 17:53Speaker 1: ten in Missouri one to tend in Missouri. If we
- 17:56Speaker 1: get the weather front that it looks like, um that
- 17:59Speaker 1: we could get, I would think it would move up.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I'm anticipated moving up to an eight or and nine. Um,
- 18:05Speaker 1: hopefully we get this cooler weather and if it gets
- 18:08Speaker 1: if that happens, and um, I would think that next
- 18:11Speaker 1: week is going to be better than even last week,
- 18:13Speaker 1: even though we're with each day we're moving further and
- 18:16Speaker 1: further away from peak Rutt. If we get the right weather,
- 18:18Speaker 1: it should be awesome. All right, Adam, I like your optimism.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Good luck with the rest of your season, and thanks
- 18:23Speaker 1: for joining me. Appreciate it anytime, alright and joining us
- 18:27Speaker 1: on the line. Next is Ryan Knits from Florida Outdoor
- 18:30Speaker 1: Experience in Florida. Now, Ryan in Florida, what would you
- 18:33Speaker 1: say the Buck activities Ben Leley on a scale of
- 18:36Speaker 1: one to ten right now? Today it's about a two
- 18:39Speaker 1: three at best. Um, mostly are run down here. It's done.
- 18:45Speaker 1: It starts early in August and September, and you know
- 18:49Speaker 1: it was it was pretty spot on this year and
- 18:52Speaker 1: lately we just had a lot of rain and wind
- 18:54Speaker 1: and it's pretty much shut things completely down as of
- 18:56Speaker 1: right now. How about for the rest of the state.
- 18:59Speaker 1: I know you have some from biological clocks in Florida.
- 19:02Speaker 1: What phase of the rout is the rest of Florida?
- 19:04Speaker 1: In absolutely, Florida is a huge state. So I'm in
- 19:08Speaker 1: the most southern region, Like I said, we're pretty much done. Um.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Now when you get to the central northern central region, Um,
- 19:15Speaker 1: there there is some action going down right now. I
- 19:17Speaker 1: had a buddy kill a buck chasing the dough about
- 19:20Speaker 1: three days ago. Um. And then you've got the Panhandle,
- 19:23Speaker 1: that's the very farthern you know, northwestern hand part of
- 19:26Speaker 1: the region. And I would say, um, and about two
- 19:30Speaker 1: to three weeks you're gonna start seeing it really pop
- 19:32Speaker 1: off there. Do you see a lot of signmaking in Florida? Yea.
- 19:36Speaker 1: So down here, Um, this year has been abnormally wet. Um.
- 19:41Speaker 1: This is the wet if I've seen it in probably
- 19:43Speaker 1: five or six years typically in November down here, Um,
- 19:46Speaker 1: it is bone dry, and we've had a couple of
- 19:49Speaker 1: tropical storms and it's it's just flooded our whole, our
- 19:52Speaker 1: whole region. So you know, seeing scrapes. That really doesn't
- 19:55Speaker 1: happen too much. Um. And like I said, you know,
- 19:58Speaker 1: just the wind and whatnot, they just haven't been too active.
- 20:01Speaker 1: With that being said, we have our first cold front
- 20:04Speaker 1: coming in of the year this Wednesday, and I do think, um,
- 20:08Speaker 1: I think the deer will I think the bucks will
- 20:11Speaker 1: be a little bit more active. They'll be making the scrapes. UM.
- 20:14Speaker 1: I don't think you're going to see the actual chasing
- 20:16Speaker 1: running action. I just think the bucks are gonna be
- 20:18Speaker 1: fired up and they will be looking for that last
- 20:20Speaker 1: dough or maybe that dough coming into that second heat. Um.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Now in the northern region, you will see the scrapes.
- 20:27Speaker 1: You you won't see any rubs right now, but you
- 20:29Speaker 1: will start to see the scrapes up in the northern
- 20:31Speaker 1: part of the Florida. It's a lot dryer up there,
- 20:34Speaker 1: a lot more sand, and you will see a lot
- 20:36Speaker 1: of scrapes. You mentioned there's a cold front coming in.
- 20:39Speaker 1: How do you hunt differently when you have a cold
- 20:41Speaker 1: front coming up. Well, the cold front for us is
- 20:44Speaker 1: not like a cold front for most of the nation. Um.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Right now, it's eighty one degrees, So you know that's
- 20:49Speaker 1: kind of been our attempt for the last three or
- 20:51Speaker 1: four weeks, and that's why the rud's pretty much shut down. Um,
- 20:54Speaker 1: when I say cold front, it's going to be probably
- 20:56Speaker 1: in the mid fifties. And that just makes you know,
- 20:59Speaker 1: for Floridians, it is like paradise for us. Um, So
- 21:03Speaker 1: all days fits are must. I mean, it's you know,
- 21:05Speaker 1: we've been waiting for this the whole year, so um
- 21:08Speaker 1: flocks all days fits the water. The water level is
- 21:12Speaker 1: going to start going down quickly once it you know,
- 21:14Speaker 1: stops raining, the water does go down quick and you
- 21:17Speaker 1: will see deer u targeting some of the areas where
- 21:21Speaker 1: I would say it's ankle deep angle deep sea seems
- 21:24Speaker 1: to be the key for for the deer around here.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Anything higher than that they don't really like anything lower
- 21:29Speaker 1: than that whatever, but deer do like the water down here.
- 21:32Speaker 1: So about angle deep is what what I tend to
- 21:34Speaker 1: look for. And um, with that being said, like there's
- 21:37Speaker 1: a lot of greenery um in that ankle deep water
- 21:40Speaker 1: where when it's when it tends to dry up around here,
- 21:43Speaker 1: everything kind of goes brown. So you'll see a lot
- 21:46Speaker 1: of deer working flag ponds where there's just you know,
- 21:48Speaker 1: six six inches of water, and there's still a lot
- 21:51Speaker 1: of you know whatever, it's algae, whatever it is they're
- 21:54Speaker 1: in there eating during the rut. Will you do any
- 21:57Speaker 1: calling or decoying like hunters in the Midwest, I typically don't,
- 22:01Speaker 1: just because you know, a lot of the woods down
- 22:03Speaker 1: here are very thick, and I don't think the deer
- 22:06Speaker 1: are as as fired up to come into as u
- 22:10Speaker 1: you know, some rattling as they are in the Midwest.
- 22:12Speaker 1: The Midwest, they can see and um, they're a little
- 22:15Speaker 1: bit more aggressive I think out there. Um, what I
- 22:17Speaker 1: do always have is a grunt call. Um, you know,
- 22:20Speaker 1: the worst they can do. You know, if you get
- 22:22Speaker 1: a bucking range and he's kind of just skirting you
- 22:24Speaker 1: and he's not gonna come any closer, and he's I
- 22:27Speaker 1: should say, he's not in range, it never hurts to
- 22:29Speaker 1: throw a couple of you know, grunts at him. Um.
- 22:32Speaker 1: I typically don't. I don't do that. I've seen a
- 22:34Speaker 1: lot more deer shy away from that than actually come
- 22:37Speaker 1: to it. But as a last resort, I'll throw a
- 22:39Speaker 1: grunt at him. If you're trying to identify good bedding
- 22:43Speaker 1: in season in Florida, what does that look like? Good
- 22:46Speaker 1: betting here? Is wherever it's dry. Uh, islands A lot
- 22:50Speaker 1: of times, you know, like the whole you know, there
- 22:52Speaker 1: will be thirty, you know, hundreds of acres of just
- 22:55Speaker 1: nothing but water and you'll get into a one or
- 22:58Speaker 1: two acre island, whether it's you know, nothing but pal
- 23:01Speaker 1: meadows or whatever it is, and a lot of times
- 23:04Speaker 1: those bucks will be betted on those little pieces of
- 23:07Speaker 1: land that's completely dry. So that's something to look forward to,
- 23:11Speaker 1: look forward to. Um, but Paul Meadow is is a
- 23:14Speaker 1: is a big thing. I see a lot of bucks
- 23:16Speaker 1: betted in the pal meadows mostly going forward. Then the
- 23:19Speaker 1: sex week or so, what do you think that bucket
- 23:21Speaker 1: activity is going to be on a scale of one
- 23:23Speaker 1: to ten in Florida? I would say seven to eight.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Just with that cold weather. Um that that first cold
- 23:29Speaker 1: wind is going to hit these bucks in the face
- 23:31Speaker 1: and they're gonna go wild. They typically do, just like
- 23:34Speaker 1: we do. It's and uh, you know, it could be
- 23:37Speaker 1: our only cold front. And I feel like the deer
- 23:39Speaker 1: nor that whenever it gets cold, they do what they
- 23:41Speaker 1: gotta do. They like to to show themselves in the daytime.
- 23:44Speaker 1: I already have a few um big bucks showing up
- 23:47Speaker 1: this week. So I feel like they probably already feel
- 23:49Speaker 1: it coming. Um, so I think it's gonna be probably
- 23:52Speaker 1: an eight. All right, Ryan, Great until good luck with
- 23:55Speaker 1: the rest of your season, and thanks for joining me.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Thanks Spencer, have a good one all right in joining
- 24:00Speaker 1: us on the line. Next is Greg Litzinger from bow
- 24:02Speaker 1: hunting fiend in New Jersey. Now, Greg in New Jersey,
- 24:06Speaker 1: what would you say the bucket activity has been lately
- 24:08Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten, four for four
- 24:11Speaker 1: or five in that range? Now, I just I think
- 24:15Speaker 1: they're just starting to break off the doors, and uh,
- 24:18Speaker 1: they're they're starting to move a little bit more. And
- 24:21Speaker 1: then the weather hasn't been exactly phenomenal here in Jersey.
- 24:25Speaker 1: When you're doing some in season scouting during post rout
- 24:29Speaker 1: what sorts of things are you looking for right now? Food?
- 24:33Speaker 1: Hidden food sources away from people As Jersey is a
- 24:36Speaker 1: very populated state. Um in, bathing is legal, so if
- 24:40Speaker 1: you're not hunting over bait, then you'd find those hidden
- 24:42Speaker 1: food sources, brows that most people are overlooking. What are
- 24:46Speaker 1: you seeing for sign newmaking right now? Some rubs are
- 24:49Speaker 1: popping back up, some new rubs, scrapes are slowly getting
- 24:55Speaker 1: looked at, again, but definitely h some new rubs poping up.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Where do you run most of your trail cameras in
- 25:01Speaker 1: late November transition out of dough betting areas in near
- 25:07Speaker 1: feeding areas, transition between the two. I try to uh
- 25:11Speaker 1: put my cameras in, you know, like pinches and bottlenecks
- 25:14Speaker 1: near the betting areas because you know, during your Rottenham Buxhel,
- 25:19Speaker 1: you know, don't really have a set pattern, but the
- 25:21Speaker 1: toes will be a little more consistent. So I try
- 25:24Speaker 1: to really focusing on the dos and where the dose
- 25:28Speaker 1: are feeding and set them up, you know, in a
- 25:30Speaker 1: place that's going to funnel deer activity when you're trying
- 25:33Speaker 1: to avoid people right now in New Jersey, what sorts
- 25:37Speaker 1: of places are you getting into or looking for to
- 25:40Speaker 1: get away from pressure water, big sticker, briar patches where
- 25:47Speaker 1: places where dogs don't even want to go, you know,
- 25:50Speaker 1: remote places, just those overlooked spots, sometimes even close to
- 25:54Speaker 1: the road. Something that this makes some somebody walking towards
- 25:57Speaker 1: just feel like I don't want to walk to this
- 25:59Speaker 1: new access or them big you know, something that requires
- 26:04Speaker 1: more than knee boots. What our depths, you know, I
- 26:07Speaker 1: wear waiters a lot, so still waste waiters are a
- 26:11Speaker 1: minimum uh for some of these spots. If you can
- 26:14Speaker 1: cross a lot of knee boots and anybody's across it.
- 26:16Speaker 1: But if you go up to your thigh then most
- 26:18Speaker 1: people are like, nah, I'm good, I'll just go around it.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Are you as mobile right now as you are during
- 26:24Speaker 1: peak rout or are you hunting some of the more
- 26:26Speaker 1: consistent places this time of year more that's not the
- 26:30Speaker 1: same um actually a little bit more mobile because I'm
- 26:33Speaker 1: trying to find those uh where there's those that you
- 26:36Speaker 1: know there, there's old dose are smart and they're crafty,
- 26:41Speaker 1: So if you're really hunting the same tree, then they're
- 26:44Speaker 1: you're just gonna get pegged eventually going forward. Then in
- 26:47Speaker 1: the next week or so, what do you think that
- 26:48Speaker 1: bucket activity is going to be on a scale of
- 26:50Speaker 1: one to ten in New Jersey, I'll ramped a seven
- 26:54Speaker 1: and seven being muslum or. Our gun season is getting
- 26:58Speaker 1: ready to ramp ups. There's a lot or peep in
- 27:00Speaker 1: the woods and the buck is going to be moving
- 27:02Speaker 1: looking for does. So there's just gonna be a lot
- 27:05Speaker 1: more movement. Dear, plus people so dere and the you know,
- 27:09Speaker 1: we'll just be trying to avoid the people, so they'll
- 27:11Speaker 1: be on their feet a little bit more. Alright, Greg,
- 27:14Speaker 1: good luck with what's left of your season. Thanks for
- 27:16Speaker 1: joining me, Yeah, thank you, alright and joining us on
- 27:19Speaker 1: the line. Next is Dylan Lens from The Breaking Point
- 27:22Speaker 1: TV in Wisconsin. Now dealing in Wisconsin. What would you
- 27:26Speaker 1: say the buck activity has been lately on a scale
- 27:28Speaker 1: of one to ten, I would say right now, and
- 27:30Speaker 1: we're looking at about a four to five out of ten,
- 27:32Speaker 1: So I would say the reason for it being a
- 27:35Speaker 1: bit lower than optimal would be two reasons. The end
- 27:39Speaker 1: of the rut and also the start of gun season
- 27:42Speaker 1: in Wisconsin. So I would say you're looking at a
- 27:44Speaker 1: lot of deer that have just run hard for the
- 27:46Speaker 1: past two three weeks, running silly, chasing does and um,
- 27:51Speaker 1: they're kind of I would say, getting towards the end
- 27:54Speaker 1: of that period. And then also coupling that with an
- 27:57Speaker 1: influx of pressure in the woods as the Blaze Orange
- 28:01Speaker 1: Army takes over in Wisconsin over this past weekend. So
- 28:04Speaker 1: you got a lot of deer that are already tired
- 28:07Speaker 1: and now run into a lot of pressure. So I
- 28:08Speaker 1: would say that's slowing them down quite a bit. How
- 28:11Speaker 1: do you see dear normally respond to that gun hunting pressure.
- 28:15Speaker 1: I would say in a lot of areas, depending on
- 28:17Speaker 1: the kind of pressure you're looking at, a lot of
- 28:19Speaker 1: those deer hunkering down, making very small daylight movements and
- 28:24Speaker 1: then picking up. Uh in in the you know, after
- 28:28Speaker 1: dark is gonna gonna be when your trail cameras are
- 28:30Speaker 1: getting the pictures of them for the most part. Right
- 28:33Speaker 1: now this time of year, what usually happens for signmaking
- 28:37Speaker 1: in Wisconsin At the end of November, I would say
- 28:40Speaker 1: you're looking at right now, your scrapes are probably pretty
- 28:43Speaker 1: covered in leaves. They haven't been hit as much as
- 28:46Speaker 1: they were in early November. But I would see, say
- 28:49Speaker 1: towards the end of the month here, you're gonna see
- 28:51Speaker 1: that pick up again as the pressure eases off and
- 28:54Speaker 1: those bucks start to cruise again hoping to find their
- 28:57Speaker 1: last couple of bells. Uh. You know, if there's any
- 29:00Speaker 1: does that didn't get bred in the first rut looking
- 29:02Speaker 1: towards the second area right here, what are the best
- 29:04Speaker 1: food sources to focus on in Wisconsin right now? Um,
- 29:08Speaker 1: I would say anything that's unpressured. So if you have
- 29:11Speaker 1: fields that haven't had guys posted up on them during
- 29:14Speaker 1: the hunts, are close to roads where there's been an
- 29:16Speaker 1: influx of traffic. I would say you're looking looking for
- 29:19Speaker 1: those kind of food sources. Obviously right now corn is
- 29:22Speaker 1: a great food source if it's just been cut. A
- 29:25Speaker 1: lot of those are getting hit all night long, So
- 29:27Speaker 1: getting close to those and the evenings, I would say,
- 29:29Speaker 1: would be a pretty good bet for some afternoon movement.
- 29:33Speaker 1: I know you do some deer drives during gun season.
- 29:36Speaker 1: What does one of those look like? How do you
- 29:38Speaker 1: find an area that you're going to walk and how
- 29:40Speaker 1: do you execute it? Yeah? First off, I would say,
- 29:43Speaker 1: you know, right now, looking at all these bucks that
- 29:46Speaker 1: are you know, hunkered down. Um, you're looking at a
- 29:49Speaker 1: lot of pressure in the woods. So those bucks don't
- 29:51Speaker 1: want to move, So getting them up H. If that's
- 29:53Speaker 1: an option by you and you have a crew of
- 29:55Speaker 1: guys willing to go out and try and fill the freezer,
- 29:57Speaker 1: that's a pretty good method of really fun that said
- 30:00Speaker 1: to try out this time of year. Um, basically, what
- 30:02Speaker 1: you're looking for are thick, nasty betting areas, trying to
- 30:07Speaker 1: push through those and get some deer moving and uh,
- 30:10Speaker 1: having some guys on the other side or you know,
- 30:12Speaker 1: adjacent to them, waiting for those deer to get up
- 30:14Speaker 1: and hopefully give you a shot opportunity. But I would
- 30:17Speaker 1: say the main thing to worry about obviously is safety
- 30:20Speaker 1: when you're doing that. Putting guys uh out in thick
- 30:23Speaker 1: cover um, pushing deer through and then hoping to shoot
- 30:26Speaker 1: rifles through is a pretty dangerous game. So definitely plan ahead,
- 30:30Speaker 1: know where your shots are gonna be, nowhere the other
- 30:31Speaker 1: hunters are going to be, and plan accordingly and be
- 30:34Speaker 1: very safe when you do it. What is the least
- 30:36Speaker 1: amount or the most amount of hunters that you will
- 30:39Speaker 1: use during a deer drive? Honestly, I think you can
- 30:42Speaker 1: do it with two people. I think that's a really
- 30:44Speaker 1: good way to do it. If you know you have
- 30:46Speaker 1: a really good funnel adjacent to some betting area, having
- 30:48Speaker 1: somebody sneak through there, not necessarily running through, making a
- 30:51Speaker 1: bunch of noise, yelling and banging pots and pans. I
- 30:54Speaker 1: really like just kind of sneaking through getting a deer up,
- 30:57Speaker 1: so it's not just busting out of there. Maybe it
- 30:59Speaker 1: just here's a little something common and wants to get
- 31:00Speaker 1: out of there, and then that way it's not running
- 31:03Speaker 1: dead sprint for the driver on the end. UM, I
- 31:06Speaker 1: really like to person drives. But I mean you can
- 31:08Speaker 1: do it all the way up to twenty people I've seen, UM,
- 31:11Speaker 1: which is a lot of fun, a lot more hectic,
- 31:13Speaker 1: and UM obviously a lot more safety concerns when you
- 31:16Speaker 1: get that number of people on a deer drive. So
- 31:19Speaker 1: when you're bumping deer from their beds, are you doing
- 31:22Speaker 1: it with your noise or you doing it with the wind?
- 31:25Speaker 1: I typically I would say it's it's coupling of both.
- 31:28Speaker 1: If you can do it where you're pushing through and
- 31:30Speaker 1: using the wind your favorite to blow your wind into
- 31:32Speaker 1: an area, UM, I would say that definitely helps. But
- 31:35Speaker 1: I think the main thing is your sound. They're gonna
- 31:38Speaker 1: hear you coming no matter what. UM, that's gonna be
- 31:41Speaker 1: the thing that keys them off in my opinion. UM,
- 31:44Speaker 1: when you're doing a rifle deer drive going forward, then
- 31:47Speaker 1: in a sex week or so, what do you think
- 31:49Speaker 1: that bucket TV is going to be On a scale
- 31:51Speaker 1: of one to ten in Wisconsin, I would say it's
- 31:54Speaker 1: gonna pick up after rifle season. I'm gonna say it's
- 31:57Speaker 1: gonna be probably a six seven, maybe even in the eight,
- 32:00Speaker 1: we get some cool weather to get those near moving
- 32:01Speaker 1: a little harder our Dylan, good luck with the rest
- 32:04Speaker 1: of your season. Thanks for joining me, absolutely, thank you
- 32:07Speaker 1: for having me. And that concludes this week's episode of
