Sam: Hey, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about Lessons in Stoicism by John Sellars. Sophie, I have to ask, did this one land differently for you than you expected?
• 0:13
Sophie: Hey there Sam. Yeah, it genuinely did. Sellars takes three Stoics, Epictetus, Seneca, and Marcus Aurelius, and pulls out the parts that actually apply to a Tuesday afternoon when everything's going wrong. It's philosophy that's meant to be used, not just admired.
• 0:31
Sam: That's what got me. I went in expecting marble statues and togas, and instead it felt like someone handing me a toolkit.
• 0:39
Sophie: Right, and the first tool is the biggest one. Epictetus says some things are up to us and some things are not. That's basically the whole foundation.
• 0:49
Sam: Okay, unpack that for me, because it sounds simple and then it isn't.
• 0:54
Sophie: So what's up to us is our opinions, our impulses, our desires, and and our aversions. What isn't up to us is our body, our reputation, our property, and our position in life. The trouble starts the moment we confuse the two.
• 1:10
Sam: Which is basically all of us, all the time. I spent most of my twenties trying to control how people at work perceived me. That's not even in my column.
• 1:18
Sophie: Exactly, and the Stoic move is to pause and ask whether the thing stressing you out is actually yours to influence. If it isn't, the distress is pointless. You're choosing to suffer over something that was never yours to command.
• 1:33
Sam: That's the line that hit me hardest, honestly. The idea that we suffer not because of events but because of our judgments about them.
• 1:41
Sophie: And that doesn't mean being cold or checking out. Seneca wrote to his friend Lucilius about handling wealth and power and misfortune without being enslaved by any of them.
• 1:52
Sam: Yeah, that surprised me. I always assumed Stoics were the guys who felt nothing. But Sellars makes the point that it's about feeling the right things in the right way.
• 2:01
Sophie: Which changes grief, right? When you lose someone, sadness is natural. But you can grieve without being destroyed, because death is part of the deal and that person was never truly yours to keep.
• 2:14
Sam: That's a hard one to sit with. It doesn't diminish the love, though. If anything it makes you more grateful for the time you actually had.
• 2:22
Sophie: And that's exactly what negative visualization is for. Seneca called it premeditating future evils, and it sounds grim until you try it.
• 2:32
Sam: So you just sit there and imagine losing your health, or your partner, or your job?
• 2:37
Sophie: Not to make yourself anxious. To remind yourself that these things are precious and temporary. And then, if the bad thing does show up, you've already rehearsed it, so you're not blindsided.
• 2:49
Sam: Marcus Aurelius did a version of that, right? He'd start his day by telling himself he was going to run into difficult people and frustrating situations.
• 2:59
Sophie: Every morning. So when it happened, he met it with calm instead of surprise and resentment. I actually tried this for a week and it's weirdly effective.
• 3:09
Sam: Wait, you did it and didn't tell me?
• 3:11
Sophie: I didn't want to jinx it. But yeah, the commute stopped ruining my mornings, which is a small miracle.
• 3:18
Sam: Okay, so walk me toward the virtue part. Because that's where I braced a little. Sellars says virtue isn't about following rules, it's about living in accordance with reason and nature.
• 3:30
Sophie: Right, and the four big ones are wisdom, justice, courage, and and moderation. When you act from those, you're fulfilling what you are as a rational being. Health and wealth and pleasure are what they called indifferents.
• 3:45
Sam: Indifferents sounds harsh, though. Like, who cares about your health?
• 3:49
Sophie: Not that they're worthless. Just that they're not essential to happiness. A good person can be content in poverty or illness, and a rotten person can be miserable with everything money can buy.
• 4:02
Sam: Which is a direct shot at basically every ad I've ever seen.
• 4:06
Sophie: It really is. Happiness comes from being more, not having more. That's the radical claim underneath the whole book.
• 4:15
Sam: Alright, what about anger? Because that's my personal project.
• 4:18
Sophie: Seneca wrote an entire treatise arguing anger is never justified, because it always rests on the belief that you've been harmed in a way that actually matters.
• 4:28
Sam: Huh. So when someone insults me, the insult only lands if I decide to take it seriously.
• 4:35
Sophie: That's the move. You recognize the other person is acting out of ignorance or weakness, and your own character doesn't shrink because of their behavior. You can still address the wrongdoing, just calmly.
• 4:47
Sam: That one I've been trying with my brother, and I'll be honest, it's harder than it sounds.
• 4:52
Sophie: It's the hardest part of the book. Complete responsibility for your own emotional state. Nobody else gets to be the reason you're furious.
• 5:01
Sam: There's also the view from above, which I loved. Marcus Aurelius would imagine looking down at the earth from way up high, watching empires rise and fall.
• 5:10
Sophie: And it doesn't make your problems vanish. It just puts them in proportion. The argument that felt enormous yesterday will be forgotten next week.
• 5:20
Sam: The death chapter is the one I keep thinking about, though. Seneca says live each day as if it were your last, and it's not morbid at all. It's freeing.
• 5:30
Sophie: Because if your time is limited, you stop wasting it on trivia. Marcus Aurelius reminded himself he could leave life at any moment, and that he should be ready to go.
• 5:40
Sam: And then there's the community piece, which I didn't expect. Marcus kept telling himself he was part of a larger whole and that humans were made for cooperation.
• 5:50
Sophie: The Stoic sage isn't a hermit. You care deeply about the world and the people in it, but you don't cling to outcomes. You do your best and accept that the results aren't fully yours.
• 6:02
Sam: That balance is the thing I want to take with me. Care hard, hold loose. That's the line I'm keeping from this book.
• 6:09
Sophie: And if you want to go deeper, the whole library lives at 7minutebooks.com/app, with over 6,000 fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language. It's $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 once for lifetime access.

Sophie: The whole point of this book is that the only battle worth winning is the one inside your own head, and you can start on it today. We'll see you in the next one.
