Transcript
- 0:18Good evening, I'm Dipam and welcome to the PCR Sports Show.
- 0:22Myself and Nigel this week. A warm welcome to you and thank
- 0:25you for joining us. And it's your Friday night start
- 0:28to the sporting weekend here on PCRFM.
- 0:32We've got a great show lined up for you this evening.
- 0:35We speak to an England international.
- 0:37Nick Andrews has joined us, who's a England seniors cricket
- 0:41international and he's going to be embarking on a wonderful
- 0:44journey in the next few days. He's representing England Down
- 0:48Under first of all, defending the Ashes against Australia and
- 0:52then defending the World Cup in New Zealand as well.
- 0:55So he's got quite an adventure ahead of him in the coming
- 0:59weeks. So we'll be hearing from Nick
- 1:01about that and how he's been preparing and how he's looking
- 1:04forward to that chapter in his life.
- 1:07But first, let's start off with this week's headlines and Nigel
- 1:10Hassle for this week. Hi, Nigel, How are you?
- 1:12I'm very well, thank you. Good evening.
- 1:14So this week's headlines then. The recent Posh revival was
- 1:17halted in its tracks last weekend when they went down one
- 1:20nil to Plymouth at the Western Home Stadium.
- 1:24It was an all round bad day at the office for the Posh with
- 1:26eight cautions ascending off for Peter Kioso and injuries to Tom
- 1:30O'Connor and Harry Leonard. Posh have a chance to get back
- 1:34to winning ways tomorrow when they travel to Buckinghamshire
- 1:37to face Wickham Wanderers at Adams Park.
- 1:40Posh are waiting on the fitness of Harry Leonard who is subject
- 1:43to the concussion protocol before being given the green
- 1:47light. Across the city.
- 1:49Peterborough Sports also suffered a defeat last weekend.
- 1:52They were beaten 2 nil in Wales against New boys to the National
- 1:55League N Merthyr. Both goals came in the
- 1:58second-half after Sports were in the game for large periods.
- 2:02To compound the defeat, there was a red card for Turbine
- 2:05striker Mark Jones. Manager Phil Brown was also
- 2:08cautioned during the game and subsequently received a one
- 2:11match touchline ban for his comments about the officials
- 2:15after the game. Sports, now in a real relegation
- 2:18scrap, are back-to-back games at Pyms Park over the next week.
- 2:22They start the week with the visit of Chester tomorrow and
- 2:25then FA Cup heroes Macclesfield will visit Pyms Park on Tuesday
- 2:29evening. Indoor CRICKET Cricket and
- 2:32Warrington have one hand on the Indoor Hunts League title after
- 2:3673 one run win against Hampton. Defending champions AK11 kept up
- 2:42the pressure with a 47 run win over Breton.
- 2:46Both AK 11 and Warrington sit at the top of the table but
- 2:50Warrington have the edge after winning the game between the two
- 2:52sides earlier in the season. Athletics and City shop putter
- 2:57Lawson Capes has been selected for the third consecutive time
- 3:01to represent England. He travels to Sweden as captain
- 3:04next month and expects to compete in both the shop put and
- 3:07the discus competitions. ROLLER HOCKEY Peterborough
- 3:11Roller Hockey Club suffered A52 defeat at Letchworth last
- 3:14weekend. The City goal scorer was Michael
- 3:17Carter with both of the Peterborough goals and in a
- 3:21packed weekend of field hockey, it was eight wins and eight
- 3:24losses for the City of Pittsborough Hockey Club.
- 3:26Last time out. The women's first cemented their
- 3:29position at the top of the table with a nine nil win over
- 3:33Dereham. Top scorer Lily Craven led the
- 3:36way with a hat trick and Bricia Foxton and Matilda How Halford
- 3:40chipped in with two each with Alana Walker and Hannah Grimshaw
- 3:44completing the scoring for Town. It's another busy weekend of
- 3:48games at Breton this weekend with the game starting at 10 AM
- 3:51on Saturday and 11:30 on Sunday. I'm finally staying with hockey
- 3:57but this time on the ice. It was a defeat for the
- 4:00Peterborough Phantoms in the semi finals of the National
- 4:03League Cup. The home leg with the Sheffield
- 4:05Steel Dogs ended in A4 four draw but Phantoms went down 51 in
- 4:10Sheffield on Wednesday evening and a 95 aggregate loss.
- 4:15Phantom's consolation goal was scored by Jasper Foster.
- 4:19And those are the headlines this week, Dipan.
- 4:22Thank you Nycha, Lots going on as always in the city of ours.
- 4:26There is, there is, it seems to, we seem to be getting away with
- 4:29the weather a little bit and seems to be not many
- 4:32postponements. Which is good.
- 4:34I know Peter, Sports had many or certainly a couple early part of
- 4:38this month and things are back on track and you follow sports
- 4:43wherever they go. And what's your experience been
- 4:46like lately? Yeah, I mean, it was Merthyr was
- 4:49the first game in 2026. So yeah, they did have a bit of
- 4:54a break, nearly three weeks. It actually did them a little
- 4:57bit good because a few of the teams around them played some
- 5:00games in hand that they had and and didn't do that well.
- 5:03So you know, it didn't it didn't do sports much harm really.
- 5:06They have dropped back into the bottom 4 now though, so two
- 5:10very, very important games coming up tomorrow against
- 5:14Chester and then on Tuesday night against Macclesfield could
- 5:17really do with, well, we could do with two wins but with at
- 5:20least at least one win out of those two.
- 5:23I mean, it's increased the increasingly tight in in the
- 5:26league and sports are kind of hovering in and around that sort
- 5:30of relegation zone, sometimes in it, sometimes out of it, you
- 5:33know, and, and putting a couple of wins back-to-back could make
- 5:36all the difference, couldn't they?
- 5:36Really just to kind of give that little boost.
- 5:39Indeed. And, and, and Phil Brown, the
- 5:41manager alluded to that in his interview last night.
- 5:44He sort of said that, you know, 5 weeks ago, just before
- 5:47Christmas and, and we were in a, a sort of a, we're in an
- 5:54improvement battle or something like that.
- 5:56That's what he sort of called it where, you know, we'd, we'd felt
- 5:59that we'd turn the corner and we were picking up points.
- 6:01But yeah, it's the last game now.
- 6:04We haven't won for quite a while but haven't played many games so
- 6:08really do need to get back on that winning track again And and
- 6:11and important that people get down to Pyms Park pass away
- 6:15tomorrow. So it's a great opportunity to
- 6:17go and watch some National League N football and cheer the
- 6:20boys on and and keep them in that league.
- 6:22And you know, you say you watch every game, you, you spend a lot
- 6:25of time with the club and in and around the club doing some of
- 6:28their media work and, and speaking to the manager,
- 6:31players, chairman, and you follow them from, from from sort
- 6:35of the summer onwards. Are you noticing sort of
- 6:39differences since Phil's been in in the hot seat and in terms of
- 6:44style of play, improved performances?
- 6:46I know they've been hit by a lot of injuries throughout the
- 6:48season as well. So that's that's not really
- 6:50helped. But do you feel that things are
- 6:52generally heading in the right direction?
- 6:54Absolutely, yeah. I think it was always going to
- 6:58be a tricky season. I, I think a lot of people got a
- 7:02little bit carried away with last year's finish, which was a
- 7:06lot higher up the league. And you know, there was talk
- 7:10about playoffs. I never really entertained that.
- 7:15I, I didn't think we, we would be up there.
- 7:17But you know, it's, they're not the worst team in the league.
- 7:21They've, they've been in a lot of games that they've lost,
- 7:24they've been in. We're just struggling to score
- 7:27goals at the minute. And that's, that's the big thing
- 7:29for me. Hopefully they'll they'll start
- 7:32with, you know, scoring those goals again.
- 7:34We we're not letting that many in.
- 7:36You talk to Phil a lot and he talks about a clean sheet
- 7:38mentality. That's that's what he's trying
- 7:40to instill into the players. And, and you look at the team
- 7:43from from what it was when Luke and Gashi had it, it's it's
- 7:47totally different team now. You know, we have struggled with
- 7:50injuries, but Tim's put his hand in his pocket and I think got
- 7:54one of the biggest squads in the league.
- 7:55So, you know, we've got the players there.
- 7:57We've got quality players there. It's just, you know how hard it
- 8:01is when you're down there and you're you're not winning.
- 8:03It's just you just need a couple of wins just to kick start
- 8:06stuff. And let's hope that's this week.
- 8:09And and I think the other thing is that Phil Brown carries with
- 8:12him, you know, a level of war and certainly the reputation and
- 8:15the ability and comes with that perhaps the chance to attract
- 8:18certain qualities of players. Team's never been shy of doing a
- 8:21bit of Wheeling and dealing so there's always going to be a
- 8:24turnover of of playing staff for the club and and and always a
- 8:28strive to to improve the squad. Yeah, I think the flip side to
- 8:31that is when you're when you're in the public eye, as Phil is,
- 8:36there's a lot of people who want to see you not fail, to not be
- 8:40too successful. So, you know, there's, there's a
- 8:43lot of, I think Phil's got a lot of haters, but he's got a lot of
- 8:46lovers out there as well. But he's definitely made the
- 8:49difference. And, and with regard to staff,
- 8:51there's there's some new faces around the club.
- 8:54We've got a strength and conditioning coach now, we've
- 8:57got a new physio and we've got a new goalkeeping coach.
- 9:01So you know, that's going to help as well.
- 9:03The, the strength and conditioning work feels alluded
- 9:07in his in his interviews is really, really important.
- 9:10And he feels that's why we're getting a lot of injuries,
- 9:12especially on the 3G pitches, because they're not doing the
- 9:16strength and conditioning work. You go down in the, into the,
- 9:19the club these days and you'll see a lot of gym equipment in
- 9:22the Tavern. That's now in the week that's a
- 9:25gym. That's not the Tavern anymore in
- 9:28the week that's a gym. And the players are doing lots
- 9:31of weights, lots of cycling, lots of rowing and stuff like
- 9:33that, which you know, they, they, they were really left to
- 9:37do that on their own before because they only trained 2
- 9:40nights a week. Now they're doing that as part
- 9:41of their official training. So that's, that's one big change
- 9:46I've seen. But but yeah, it's, it's just,
- 9:50we're just desperate for some goals, just desperate for a win.
- 9:53And then I don't see any reason why it can't kick off if that
- 9:56comes. And you'll be there tomorrow.
- 9:57Certainly will, yes. Can't wait, can't wait.
- 9:59I love the old Saturday, Tuesday at home.
- 10:01It's something to look forward to.
- 10:04Brilliant Nick, if I, Nick, if I can bring you in just quickly,
- 10:07you know, you go to Peter of Sports when you get a chance.
- 10:12It's a remarkable story up here of sports in the last sort of
- 10:145-10 years in the rise they've had through the the grassroots
- 10:17leagues and then to where they are now and and to have a former
- 10:20Premier League man as a manager. It's fantastic.
- 10:24Yes, I'll I'll get down there when I can.
- 10:26I really enjoy it. I know there's not a a big fan
- 10:29base there. One of the things I quite like
- 10:32is that you can make the decision to go to a game fairly
- 10:35late. You haven't got to buy a ticket
- 10:36a a week in advance and and everything like that.
- 10:39It's a friendly, hospitable place.
- 10:41It was welcomed. It's always no one or two people
- 10:44down there to have a chat with during the game and after the
- 10:47game. And you can have a beer if you
- 10:48want before or during or after, which is, you know, very
- 10:52convivial. And yeah, I love it.
- 10:54It's as good as it's a kind of a nice relaxed, casual place to go
- 10:57and watch football and none of the sort of heirs and graces is
- 11:00perhaps you get further the league and you can kind of, you
- 11:03know, yeah, just kind of beat yourself a little bit more
- 11:05kindly. Yeah, and, and, and you can talk
- 11:07to all my fans as well. Yeah, without any kind of
- 11:10tension. Absolutely.
- 11:12I mean guys who follow sort of National League side, they're
- 11:15sort of die hard football supporters and happy for a chat
- 11:18and a bit of banter with anyone. You know, there's not this kind
- 11:21of tribal rubbish that you get in the the the top levels of
- 11:25football now. I think it's very, very pleasant
- 11:27place to go and and watch and I'll be there tomorrow.
- 11:31It brings back memories, doesn't it Nick of moving along Glee
- 11:34road at Posh when used to watch used to follow the ball, didn't
- 11:37you? Where where for the first and
- 11:39second-half, you can do that at sports and, and I'm telling you,
- 11:42anybody who goes down there for the first time I think will be
- 11:44pleasantly surprised with the standard of football for
- 11:47National League North. And not not just standard
- 11:49football, but the standard facility as well, because our
- 11:51team has invested an awful, an awful lot of resources into
- 11:56making the ground what it is now.
- 11:58Absolutely. So brilliant, right?
- 12:00Let's take a short break then. Then we'll come back and speak
- 12:03to Nick with a bit more earnest about cricket and what his
- 12:06speciality is. So stay tuned, you listen to PCR
- 12:08FM. You're listening to PCR sports.

- 13:45We briefly heard from him just before the break talking about
- 13:47pizza sports, but Nick Andrews is in the studio with us.
- 13:50Nick is an England seniors cricket international.
- 13:53He's played for the side for a few years now and he's going to
- 13:58be embarking on a journey down under to Australia and New
- 14:02Zealand to defend the Ashes and the World Cup for the country.
- 14:06So exciting times for Nick coming up and to follow on from
- 14:10exciting times they've already had with the side.
- 14:12So Nick, good evening. How are you?
- 14:13Good. Evening, Deepan.
- 14:15Very well indeed. Thank you.
- 14:16Thanks for joining us. My pleasure.
- 14:18You must be excited, surely? Yeah, I'm absolutely bubbling at
- 14:22the moment. It's only three days before we
- 14:25head off and you know, can't wait to get cracking.
- 14:28Absolutely. And I mean, just that feeling
- 14:31we, we get other guests in that have, in whatever sport that
- 14:35have managed to get to a level where they're, they're fortunate
- 14:38to represent their, their country.
- 14:40But what's the feeling like to to represent England in, in, in
- 14:44an international tournament, you know, the Ashes, which is a, you
- 14:48know, a big rivalry and, and then obviously the World Cup as
- 14:51well. D Pam I've, I've been lucky
- 14:54enough to, I've been playing for England since, since I was 60,
- 14:59on and off through the 60s and and now through the 70s.
- 15:02I still can't, can't, can't quite believe that I'm
- 15:06representing England. Hopefully I'll, when I finish
- 15:09playing and look back on it, I might view it sort of slightly
- 15:12differently, but it's, it's unreal.
- 15:16But you know, fantastic at the same time.
- 15:19I'm 73, for heaven's sake. I'm hardly a youth and played
- 15:24cricket all my life, played sort of just reasonable club cricket,
- 15:27nothing sort of fantastic, but just sort of kept, kept going
- 15:32and kept going. And I perhaps haven't got as bad
- 15:34as some people who get older and still still struggling along
- 15:39and, and good things have have happened to me.
- 15:42Just incredibly lucky and you know, I'm just riding that Crest
- 15:45of a wave while it's still there, while it's still there.
- 15:47Amazing. And.
- 15:48And times like this and and obviously you've had previous
- 15:51experiences with the national side, but are they kind of pinch
- 15:54me moments still for you? Very much so.
- 15:56Yes. And you know the first time we
- 15:59went and thought, oh OK, well that's it.
- 16:00I've done that and then had the chance two years ago to go with,
- 16:04with the 70s again and couldn't believe my luck then and now
- 16:09with a, a World Cup and an Astra series to that I've been
- 16:13selected for, you know, I just feel so fortunate.
- 16:16But having said that, I, I don't feel as though I shouldn't be
- 16:21there. If you know, of course, I think
- 16:22I've done enough and I think I've done well enough to warrant
- 16:28the selection and I hope I still that that's proved at the end of
- 16:34this winter. Brilliant.
- 16:36But yes, it's it's it's coming on quickly.
- 16:38And as I said, I can't wait to get cracking.
- 16:41Do you? Do you keep counting
- 16:43international appearances? Oh yes.
- 16:45How many have you had? Well, yeah, why don't I keep
- 16:49camera? I'm not sure I can trot them
- 16:51out, but I've I've probably played about 20 times, but
- 16:54that's impressive. Enough plus with.
- 16:56With two games as well, it's probably getting on sort of 3030
- 17:00plus games in a in an England shirt.
- 17:03That's impressive. Haul, Really, to be honest, it's
- 17:05not bad. It's.
- 17:05Not bad, I won't lie to you. So I mean, you touched on on
- 17:10your kind of playing career prior to the international
- 17:12appearances. So just briefly, you know, chart
- 17:15for us, you're kind of career from the day you started playing
- 17:18cricket at an earlier age and and how you've got to where you
- 17:21are. What's what's been your kind of
- 17:22story? As I said, I've been.
- 17:23A a club cricketer really. I started playing when I was
- 17:26early, early teens at at my father's club and sort of played
- 17:31cricket ever since and varying degrees of of success.
- 17:37As I said, nothing, nothing special, but just kept going and
- 17:42I've, I've been lucky enough that I've been fairly fit and
- 17:47eyes are still quite good. More importantly, my knees and
- 17:50ankles are holding up, which you know, that being said it, it's
- 17:53one of the first things that goes and it stops a lot of
- 17:56people from playing into their, into their dosage like like I
- 18:00am. So I've been fortunate on that
- 18:03front and I've been playing seniors cricket since I was 50,
- 18:07over 50s, over 60s and now over 70s.
- 18:10So it's you're getting on for about 20-3 years I've been
- 18:13playing seniors cricket and it it suits me.
- 18:17For some reason I just seem to have sort of grown into it.
- 18:20I've done done quite well and I don't want to stop anytime soon,
- 18:24to be fair. Fantastic.
- 18:26Amazing journey. And when, when there aren't
- 18:28tournaments on, you know, World Cups or, or, or like an ashy
- 18:31series, do the seniors still play like one day International
- 18:36test matches, say the regular international team would, but
- 18:40over 70s? There's not a lot of national, I
- 18:43know there's a World Cup coming up and there's eight countries
- 18:46taking part in that, but there's not a lot of countries other
- 18:49than Australia and possibly I think New Zealand coming on
- 18:53board who prepared to sort of tour and host tours at over 70s
- 18:58level. So you know, we've we've been
- 18:59sort of not stuck, but we've been playing out Australia a
- 19:04fair bit and that's not really sustainable.
- 19:07Every year, every two years it's quite quite difficult, quite
- 19:09expensive because you know, self funded.
- 19:12We don't get don't get a lot of financial help.
- 19:15We get a bit of bit of sponsorship that again we have
- 19:18to raise amongst ourselves. So what we're trying to say it's
- 19:26it's not Sixers are. Hard to come by on there I
- 19:27suppose. Very much so.
- 19:28Yes, yeah, we, we, we sort of soccer play other teams and
- 19:33yeah, during times when there's not a national series or or a
- 19:38World Cup, we, we play a few sort of friendlies and try and
- 19:43stick together because it's it's a quite short window if you're
- 19:47representing England over 70. I mean, some poor devils who
- 19:50were selected just part of COVID and then tours were cancelled
- 19:55and they didn't get to play and that was their opportunity gone.
- 19:59Yes. And I think, well, how how cruel
- 20:01is that? It is, isn't it?
- 20:03You know, you, you wait, you, you get an England call up at 70
- 20:05is fantastic. Then to have it taken away from
- 20:08you for no fault of your own is it's pretty, pretty desperate.
- 20:12Absolutely. And and.
- 20:13Even at the what you'd perhaps call regular international
- 20:17level, there aren't, you know, I know Scotland I think have got a
- 20:19side, but there's not many in this region of the world, is
- 20:23there that that have cricket inside.
- 20:24Because you think about the cricket powerhouses, you've got
- 20:27the two down unders, you've got subcontinent Asia with, with
- 20:31India and Pakistan and a handful of maybe African countries and,
- 20:35and, and obviously England and, and that's kind of really isn't
- 20:38it in that sense, I mean. For this upcoming World Cup,
- 20:41we've got in in March in New Zealand there there's Australia
- 20:46there New Zealand are there, India there, Sri Lanka are
- 20:50there, Canada are there, there's an emerging nations sort of bit
- 20:55like a rest of the world if you like and and England there.
- 20:59So I think it's I think that's eight.
- 21:01And you know, if more of those were playing regularly and we
- 21:04get more regularly, it'd be fantastic.
- 21:07But that's not the case at the moment.
- 21:09And we don't play that many games, which is a bit
- 21:12disappointing. But you know, we, we cherish and
- 21:15the games that we do play and knowing that, you know, a year
- 21:20from now might face might not be fitting with.
- 21:24So it was two years ago when we went to Australia last and I
- 21:27think there's 4-5 of the 17 who went on that, who were going
- 21:31back this year. So there's a quite a regular
- 21:35sort of change where, you know, people come through, younger
- 21:38players are available, keen to have a go and other guys are
- 21:41dropping off at the other end and not quite sort of good
- 21:44enough to to carry on. So, you know, we're just sort of
- 21:47hanging on in there enjoying it. Well, we can.
- 21:52So over 70s then, is that the highest age group for in the
- 21:57England camp or is there at the moment?
- 22:00At the moment there's, I mean, people talk sort of jokingly
- 22:05about an overrated side and whilst that's a bit fanciful,
- 22:10it's not 100 miles off the off the mark.
- 22:13And I think there's some talk about being an over 70 fives
- 22:17because, you know, people get to the mid 70s like I will in a
- 22:21year or two time. I'll still be keen to play.
- 22:24But I'm fully aware that there's a load of Youngs every year, the
- 22:28great sort of tranche of, of players become available to play
- 22:31and they want to play and they're going to be 5 years
- 22:34younger than me and we've got a shelf life at that level.
- 22:38So what's the next step? Well, there's enough people who
- 22:41want to play over 70s cricket. Someone's going to come out and
- 22:45and organise it and it will probably happen.
- 22:47What what would that look like? Is that down to you guys to
- 22:50drive that as so as your team at the moment as you get older and
- 22:55get to that 75 year, there's there's there's.
- 22:57There's a national governing body for the over 60s, over 70s.
- 23:01It's really well run. It's a, you know, there's a big
- 23:03a group of people represented throughout the whole country.
- 23:08And yeah, it's if it's going to happen, those are the guys who
- 23:13can make it happen if there's a demand for it.
- 23:15And I wouldn't be surprised. Hope so.
- 23:18Or if they're listening, let's. Make it happen.
- 23:20Sounds like a really good plan, Nick actually.
- 23:22So right, let's just take a slight pause there.
- 23:24We'll be back after break, talking more cricket with Nick
- 23:27as he heads Down Under for the Ashes and the World Cup.
- 23:29Stay tuned. You're listening to PCR sports.

- 24:25So Nick, back to your wonderful story representing England
- 24:28seniors in the Ashes tour and the World Cup starting.
- 24:33Well, you set off in two or three days time.
- 24:36How do you sort of prepare for such a because it is quite AI
- 24:41suppose dexterous journey, isn't it because you're travelling to
- 24:44the other side of the world. Big time difference between here
- 24:47and then Australia and then New Zealand.
- 24:49Cricket wise, you're out of season here, but they're in
- 24:52season. Let's say you know, What's your
- 24:54preparation been looking like so far?
- 24:57It's not been easy. Well, I finished the season last
- 25:03year in September. That's why I, I sort of carried
- 25:07on trying to keep myself in a little bit of reasonable
- 25:09condition, not running or sort of going to the gym five days a
- 25:14week, but just stuff under my own steam, things that I do to
- 25:18keep all my sort of all my muscles sort of going, my arms
- 25:22and legs and core and everything just to keep them supple and
- 25:25going. And during that time, luckily
- 25:30I've been able to get a few Nets organised, one or two before
- 25:33Christmas and a couple of Nets in the last couple of weeks.
- 25:37I've got some batting, got some bowling in there.
- 25:40I've been stepping up a little bit since Christmas, trying to
- 25:43get a bit more intimate legs, knowing that when we get out
- 25:46there, you know, hit, hit the ground running.
- 25:49We we get there sort of I think it's on the on that the, the
- 25:5228th might have a chance of a a cheeky little net with some
- 25:58other guys who were going earlier the next day.
- 26:00Then there's a practice day and then there's the first game,
- 26:03then there's a rest, then there's another game, there's a
- 26:05rest there's and it goes on like that pretty well for best part
- 26:08of five. Yeah, absolutely.
- 26:09So the first. Few games are going to be quite
- 26:11hard getting your legs going, getting into a little bit of
- 26:14form, getting used to the, the wickets and the, and the weather
- 26:17and everything out there. But you know, that's what we're
- 26:20going for. We can't sort of turn around and
- 26:22say, oh, well, it's a bit hot for us and we can't do it.
- 26:25You know, we're going out there to defend the Ashes against
- 26:27Australia and we've seen what a mess that the, the, the test
- 26:31team did a a few weeks ago. There's a bit of national pride
- 26:34at stake here. And we, we want to, we want to
- 26:36do well. So what we can't say we've
- 26:39prepared any better than the, the other team prepared.
- 26:44We we, we've done our best and we just got to suck it up and
- 26:49try our best. So you sound.
- 26:50Up for it definitely next, which is brilliant.
- 26:53I mean, do you get a chance to to get together with a squad
- 26:55much before the actual departure?
- 26:57Very. Little we, we got together once
- 27:01the team was announced, come midway through the season or the
- 27:04squad was, we had a 2 day get together down in, in
- 27:10Gloucestershire so we could play a couple of games, get to know
- 27:13one another as the squad, get all the the ladies, you know,
- 27:17the halves down there meeting the other ladies.
- 27:19So you know they knew who they would be going on tour with and
- 27:24that was great. But one of the games got rained
- 27:26off, so we we ended up going into indoor Nets, which was OK,
- 27:30but it was a nice way to get together and it was really good.
- 27:33And then we had a day at the end of November where most of the
- 27:38the squad got together. We had a net session, went for a
- 27:41meal in the evening again, just to get a little bit of bonding
- 27:44with the squad and that that went really well.
- 27:48And then since then it's all been down to the individuals to
- 27:51what they can organise. And like I say, I've been sort
- 27:54of lucky that I've been able to to arrange a few Nets people
- 27:57come along and yes, been been been pretty good fantastic.
- 28:01So, so when? You get down there then and the
- 28:04competition starts. Modern day sportsmen have
- 28:08everything done for them. Is that the same for you guys?
- 28:11How? How professional.
- 28:12How pampered are you, I guess, Nigel?
- 28:14What do you think? No, I mean, we've got a really
- 28:18good management team. The, the, the organization is,
- 28:22is excellent. You know, everything's been
- 28:24arranged, the hotels, the accommodation, the meals, the
- 28:28transport, you know that that's all, that's all we've given kits
- 28:32provided. That's that's, that's really
- 28:34good. But as far as other sort of
- 28:37preparations concerned and yeah, we don't get a lot.
- 28:41So you're not coming. Off the pitch for a massage
- 28:43every 5 minutes that is stuff like that unlikely.
- 28:47Unlikely, but what? About the what about the press
- 28:50as well? When you get into these
- 28:51tournaments. I've I've been, I've been down
- 28:54under when there's been an England Ashes tour going on and
- 28:58it's just non-stop the the bat. Should we call it banter?
- 29:03You know, even on their main news bulletin, I remember
- 29:06watching that one night and there we're taking the Mickey
- 29:07out of the England team. Did did the press pick you guys
- 29:10up because you're under that Ashes guys not.
- 29:13So much no. 10 years ago when I went with the over 60s, there
- 29:18was a, an item on Channel 9 news, one of the One Day
- 29:23internationals. It was just a girls there doing
- 29:25interviews and there were clips from the the game and
- 29:29interviewing the players and the manager and the captains and
- 29:32everything. And that went out over over
- 29:33national TV in in Australia. But by and large, I mean the
- 29:38guys in assemblies, they're not quite as brash and as in your
- 29:42face as some of the kind of younger people are.
- 29:48They're decent blokes. You know, we get on really well.
- 29:51I've known some of them for, you know, 10 years and more more
- 29:54now. And it's great to meet up with
- 29:57them when we have a good laugh and have a drink together.
- 30:00But when we get on the on the pitch, it's, it's, it's a
- 30:04different match. We, we play hard and expect it
- 30:06and expect it of them. But you know, it's done in the
- 30:09right manner and we would expect.
- 30:11Nothing else. Nick, this is the Ashes.
- 30:14Absolutely. Yes, and what and.
- 30:16What about what about you? You obviously play at at club
- 30:19grounds on I'm guessing. Yeah.
- 30:21What what about spectators? How how many come and watch
- 30:24these games? We get a few.
- 30:25For the for the ODIs, I mean, it's often family and friends
- 30:29and things like that. And and that's locals who are
- 30:32aware care of it. You might get sort of 50 or 80
- 30:35people there watching it, which is, you know, all we can hope
- 30:41for really. We play on some beautiful
- 30:45grounds, no two ways about it. Yeah, really nice.
- 30:49And yeah, they do a credit to us and that's that's good.
- 30:53People always ask me as well. I say, oh, you're going to
- 30:55Australia. Will you be playing at the MCG
- 30:58or the No, absolutely not. You know, they couldn't afford
- 31:02to hard a big, a big stadium like that.
- 31:05It'd be horrendously expensive. There wouldn't be much
- 31:08atmosphere rattling around in big state would be horrible in a
- 31:12way. Be nice to say you've you've
- 31:13played at a ground like that. But no, they play on nice sort
- 31:16of public grounds looked after by the local authority.
- 31:20Nothing like they are in this country.
- 31:22You say local authority ground. You'd you'd imagine.
- 31:24Well, it comes up some sort of pretty grim ideas.
- 31:27But this is top notch and they they look after you really well.
- 31:31You stumble over. That sort of little picturesque
- 31:34cricket ground, an awful lot in Australia, don't you, as you're
- 31:36travelling around. There's another one there,
- 31:38there's another one there, Lots of those sorts of grounds
- 31:40around, isn't there? Yes.
- 31:42Yeah, but a lot of them in Australia, they're dual purpose
- 31:45grounds. They play Aussie Rules football
- 31:47on there, which not always conducive to the best kind of
- 31:50cricket ground, but some of the grounds that we play out are
- 31:53just bespoke cricket grounds and, you know, nice outfields
- 31:56and, you know, you haven't got a couple of goal posts and on the
- 31:59side screens. Fantastic.
- 32:03You mentioned there obviously about partners meeting up in
- 32:06your sort of pre tournament catch ups and and the partners
- 32:10then go with you on the tour as well.
- 32:12Oh yes. So that's quite nice in that
- 32:13sense that especially for maybe newcomers in the squad, at least
- 32:16they got one familiar face next to them.
- 32:18It's brilliant. Yes yeah sadly my wifes been on
- 32:21three tours to well will be 3 tours to Australia now and yeah
- 32:27the women usually get on sort of pretty well.
- 32:29They don't know one another that well at the beginning a few of
- 32:32them will but you move around from ground to ground and you're
- 32:35staying at the same hotel for a while and you can't assume bond
- 32:38in and they seem to get it get on OK and none of them have gone
- 32:42away and said well I was rubbish or you didn't enjoy that or that
- 32:45was horrible. No little cliques or or anything
- 32:47like that. We say it's a good sort of
- 32:49strong squad and I think that's one of the one of the sort of
- 32:54qualities they were looking at are people who make good
- 32:57tourists. Yes, you know, you can get good
- 32:59players, but if they're a bad influence or they're not going
- 33:02to get on with the rest of this, you don't really want that.
- 33:05Yeah, you want that? That kind of togetherness.
- 33:07Yeah. Absolutely.
- 33:08And we've. Been been lucky so far that
- 33:10we've we've had good touring squads and the signs are that
- 33:14we've got a really good one this time yeah, because you're.
- 33:17Ultimately you're, you're representing the country, aren't
- 33:19you? So you know, A's got to be best
- 33:21behaviour from from the players and the squad, but then also any
- 33:23associates that are with them as well.
- 33:25Yeah, they'll be like. Drunken nightclub stories coming
- 33:27out of this too. Definitely not.
- 33:32And then obviously onward to New Zealand afterwards for the World
- 33:35Cup and equally the venues there, are they similar to what
- 33:38you described? Yeah, actually I've.
- 33:39Had a look at the the photos on our On Our Tour brochure and
- 33:46fantastic. I mean, if we're lucky enough to
- 33:48get through to the final, it's being staged at the Hagley,
- 33:52Hagley Oval in Christchurch, which they play top class
- 33:57cricket matches out there. Looks a beautiful place.
- 34:01And that would be, that'd be a real feather in our caps to be
- 34:03able to play there. But that's a long way off yet.
- 34:05We're not thinking about that just yet.
- 34:08So what can you what? Experience, can you kind of
- 34:09bring forward from the previous Ashes tour or Ashes win and also
- 34:13the World Cup win there now? Does that kind of put you in
- 34:16good stead for the first Ashes? Like, so this is my third tour
- 34:19of Australia, so I know pretty well what the wickets are like,
- 34:22what the weather's like, what what to expect.
- 34:26I mean, that will help, but at the end of the day you've got to
- 34:29go out and play cricket, you've got to go out there and bowl,
- 34:31you've got to go out there and bat.
- 34:33No one can help you or do that for you.
- 34:35It's a very individual sort of sport within a A-Team sport.
- 34:39But having been there and sort of done it before, whilst it, it
- 34:44won't necessarily be any easier, but it'll just give you a little
- 34:48bit of help. I think that you're going over
- 34:51familiar ground. Yeah, absolutely.
- 34:53Absolutely. And yeah, yeah.
- 34:57I mean, what what's your kind of strength as a player?
- 34:59Then what's what's your my strength?
- 35:00Yeah, what's what I like well. I'm an all rounder and I always
- 35:05pride myself on thinking, well if I wasn't in the in the team
- 35:10for my batting, will I get in just as a bowler?
- 35:14And if I wasn't getting a bowl in the side, would I get in the
- 35:17side as a batter now? I don't know, but as a batter
- 35:22and a bowler gives me two opportunities.
- 35:27I've got more than one string to my bow and you know, I'm lucky
- 35:32enough to be able to do both disciplines to a a good enough
- 35:37level. That has been fairly successful
- 35:40while I've been playing for England, so must be doing
- 35:42something right. And also as well, I try to keep
- 35:45myself fit enough to be a good fielder.
- 35:48Yeah, there's no good being being a good batsman, but you,
- 35:51you can see 25 runs in the field because you can't stop it or run
- 35:54after it or throw it in. Yeah, that's just an important
- 35:57part of yeah of the game as being a good bat, a good bowler.
- 36:01So if I could do three elements pretty well, I've got, you know,
- 36:05gives me better chance to, you know, keeping the side.
- 36:08I'm not going to be batting at two or three or anything like
- 36:11that. So, but mostly, mostly I'll get
- 36:14an opportunity to do something during a game and it's it's
- 36:18doing that and, you know, having, having the confidence to
- 36:21to do it at the time. And what order did you bat?
- 36:23Out. Then I usually go around.
- 36:24That 7, something like that, 7-8, yeah.
- 36:29Which is a decent place to be, Yeah, absolutely.
- 36:31But we've got such a strong. Batting side this time, some
- 36:33really good players though. Having said that, you never know
- 36:37when you might be needed, but I'm not expecting to to bat an
- 36:41awful lot in the in the one day games.
- 36:43But who knows? Who knows?
- 36:45Fingers crossed. Eight.
- 36:46Yeah, right. Let's take our final break and
- 36:49we're back speaking with Nick about his cricket adventures.
- 36:52Stay tuned, It's PCR FM. You're listening to PCR sports.
- 37:07Welcome back to the PCR Sports Show.
- 37:09Myself, Dipam and Nigel this week, if you missed any of the
- 37:12show, you missed an absolutely fascinating show so far with
- 37:15Nick Andrews, who's representing England seniors in the Ashes
- 37:19tour Down Under and the World Cup in New Zealand as well.
- 37:22So you can listen back and on PCRFM after 7:00 when our show
- 37:27is uploaded. So do go back and catch up on
- 37:31anything that you've missed. But we continue with Nick, as I
- 37:34say Nick. So the tour is just sort of
- 37:37three days away to the journey is 3 days away.
- 37:41You get there, you've got a couple of days to settle and
- 37:43then it's straight into the action.
- 37:45And you know, how, how do you kind of adjust your mindset?
- 37:50Because you know, like I mentioned earlier, we're out of
- 37:52season here. So you, you're perhaps not
- 37:54playing cricket here as regular as you perhaps were a few months
- 37:56ago. And then kind of switching on
- 37:59that mindset that you're going to be playing cricket, you're
- 38:01playing on the other side of the world and in, in key matches all
- 38:05of a sudden. So what's the kind of motivation
- 38:07and mindset? Hopefully I might get 2 next
- 38:12sessions in and before our first game.
- 38:16And I remember again drawing on experience from three years ago
- 38:20that we, we flew to Queensland and played up in the, the north
- 38:26of the country and it was so hot.
- 38:27It was 37° and it was humid and it, it was so hot and just
- 38:34trying to get you, you just got to go through it.
- 38:36It's it's not easy. And for the first day or two, we
- 38:40were absolutely tuckered. But you know, you play a game
- 38:43and and you just get a little bit more strength and then the
- 38:45next game and and you just have to build into it.
- 38:48You're not going to be going full ball in the first game.
- 38:52And, you know, we perhaps won't have our finest performance in
- 38:56the first game, but we will grow.
- 38:58We we know what to expect and we'll improve as the as the two
- 39:02starts and these early games will be absolutely key for us.
- 39:05Yeah, absolutely. And.
- 39:07They say that you say there's five for you in the squad from
- 39:09last time. So there's the majority of squad
- 39:11are are new faces. So it's kind of they all want to
- 39:14blend in and, and do well and, but some of the guys who.
- 39:17Played in the World Cup 2 years ago who weren't on the last away
- 39:21tour. So it's the the sort of squad
- 39:24just just generally sort of changes each year.
- 39:28Yeah. Not not drastically, which is
- 39:30good. You need that.
- 39:30Kind of. It's almost like a conveyor
- 39:32belt, don't you really? Definitely, yeah.
- 39:33Got to got to sort of freshen it up and bring sort of younger
- 39:37sort of good talent into play and if they're they're good
- 39:39enough, they'll, they'll get in excellent.
- 39:43So when you first started playing at international level,
- 39:46you said it's been over 20 years now.
- 39:48Well, no, it's. 20/12/2012 SO. You're on to 13 years, 1314
- 39:53years, so how's that kind? How did that come about?
- 39:57Obviously you said you're playing local league cricket.
- 40:00I don't think that had. Any bearing on that?
- 40:03I played over 50s, over 60s cricket.
- 40:06I was enjoying my first year over 60s and we play on a on a
- 40:11regional basis and we play against Norfolk a couple of
- 40:14times a year. And we had done for years.
- 40:16And the guy there was the chap who was the the chairman and
- 40:19sort of manager of the, of the over 60s.
- 40:22And he kept telling me, oh, is it yes, when you get to 16 it
- 40:24will be. He was over his England cricket
- 40:26and he used to swan around with his England shirt and cap on.
- 40:30And I thought, Oh yeah, that looks all right, doesn't it?
- 40:32And I got to get when I was 16 that first year, Australia are
- 40:37over here in the national series.
- 40:38And it was the last game of the of the series, England playing
- 40:43Australia, Bourne up at the road there and I'd scored some runs a
- 40:48week before and we had a friendly game against the
- 40:51Australian touring side. It was a mixed team between
- 40:54Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. And I was playing and this guy
- 40:57Martin Pierce who was the manager was playing and I did
- 41:00quite well in that game. And he said after me, he said
- 41:04I've had a word with the with the Australians and we've got
- 41:07we, we're playing tomorrow in this game at Bourne.
- 41:10They're quite keen to make it 12 a side.
- 41:13Yeah. And would you play?
- 41:16Would I play? Yeah.
- 41:18Absolutely. Of course, yeah.
- 41:19Of course I would love to. Yeah.
- 41:21Wow, I was absolutely made-up. So went to Bourne the next day
- 41:26and it was, it's been raining overnight.
- 41:28It was green, it was damp and the Martin who was the captain
- 41:33chairman always opened the batting.
- 41:35It's got a fantastic record. And have a look at this green
- 41:39top and we'd lost the tops and we were, we were put into bat.
- 41:42He said Nick, he said would you mind opening today?
- 41:44He said I'm going to drop down to #6 and I thought, oh, thank
- 41:48you Martin. Yeah.
- 41:49So I, I went and opened and I got a few runs, I got a few
- 41:52wicket. I got the man of the match award
- 41:53believer in first, first ever game.
- 41:56So kind of that gave me a little bit of a, a base to, to carry
- 42:00on. I played one or two more games
- 42:01the following year against sort of Scotland and that that gave
- 42:06me a leg, a leg up. But after that, Martin sort of
- 42:11moved on. He was, he was ousted from from
- 42:13his position and selection for the the side after that became a
- 42:17lot more professional. There were trials, there were
- 42:21Nets, there were sort of, you know, counties were asked to
- 42:25recommend they're better players and trials were organised and
- 42:30you know, and rightly went through that process.
- 42:32But luckily I was able to get through them successfully.
- 42:36And that's, that's how the the process continues.
- 42:39Now trawl matches, recommendations, how you do your
- 42:44records and your stats are looked at scrupulously on how
- 42:47you're doing. Yeah, everything's there on on
- 42:49the play cricket website so that you can't sort of blag your way
- 42:53through saying, oh, I've done this, I've done that.
- 42:55As you quickly Scroll down and everything that you've done seen
- 42:58is cricket ever since you started playing.
- 43:00It's there to to to sort of be scrutinised.
- 43:05Fantastic, So so this. Is an Ashes series, it's a World
- 43:09Cup. You obviously want to win those.
- 43:11What would not? Personally though, what would a
- 43:15good series for Nick Andrews look like?
- 43:18Well, I'd like to get a few runs, I'd like to get a few
- 43:21wickets. I mean, there's, there's nothing
- 43:24better than winning when you've actually contributed to
- 43:28something. You know, it's nice to be there.
- 43:30I mean, I was lucky enough in the, in the World Cup final two
- 43:33years ago that I, I took some wickets at a, at a, at a tough
- 43:37time. And you know, we ended up
- 43:39winning the game and I felt I played, I didn't get to bat.
- 43:43We, it wasn't needed that day, but we won a game and I, I can
- 43:47say that yes, I'd, I'd chipped in, I'd, I'd contributed to the
- 43:50game. And that's, that's what we're
- 43:51looking for really. If you don't, yeah, And that
- 43:54happens as well. But the important thing is that
- 43:56the team does well. And, you know, everyone wants to
- 43:59be a part of everybody wants to do their bit and succeed.
- 44:03Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.
- 44:04People have good tours. Porters.
- 44:07Fingers crossed. I mean, I'll do OK, but if I
- 44:09don't and the team does well, that'll be good for me.
- 44:12Yeah, it's a team. Victory that counts as an
- 44:14ultimate to bring the bring the two trophies back home against
- 44:17of course it's a. Very fanciful thought, but you
- 44:20know you don't want to go get into ahead of ourselves got lots
- 44:24of work to do in absolutely try and condition before that so
- 44:29the. The Ashes tour itself, that's
- 44:31played through One Day International.
- 44:34Yeah, yeah, 40. Five over games, Yeah.
- 44:37And it's really helpful as well that they are.
- 44:40They're still 12 aside games so that one person doesn't bat and
- 44:44one person can't bowl, so that you can sub fielders on and off.
- 44:48And we have like not a 12th man, but a 13th man.
- 44:52So you know, you can be bringing sort of two people off every 9
- 44:56overs, for example. And it doesn't make a difference
- 44:59if you've you bowled 9 overs and you're out there in 30° of heat.
- 45:03If you can get a 40 minute break in the middle of it all,
- 45:07fantastic. You know, it just gives you that
- 45:10you don't get quite so exhausted.
- 45:14Fantastic it. Sounds amazing.
- 45:16You speak with such passion and enthusiasm, Nick, you know
- 45:19clearly you you love do doing what you do, representing the
- 45:22country and rightly so. And you know, wishing you all
- 45:25the best in the tour. Thank you.
- 45:27Thank you, you. Know.
- 45:28Absolutely. Best of luck SO.
- 45:30Do keep in touch with us if you can throughout the tournament.
- 45:33Drop us a message. Do you want me to?
- 45:34Yeah, of course, we'll. We'll give you result updates in
- 45:37our shows and what have you, and we'd love to do that.

- 45:42So and I can lie. Can't I?
- 45:44Yeah. No, no.
- 45:45No, absolutely, absolutely. So yeah, I say wishing you all
- 45:49the best. Absolutely fantastic.
- 45:51So and dear, do keep in touch. Nice.

- 46:00yeah, played a lot of cricket and just the opportunity to go
- 46:04out and do something like you're going to do is is just amazing
- 46:07and and if I'm right you speak so passionately passionately
- 46:10about it and really hope you have a great time and bring it
- 46:14home. Thanks, Nigel.
- 46:15Yeah. I certainly, yeah, certainly try
- 46:18brilliant good stuff. Good luck to Peter for sports
