- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermind, set coach, creative strategist, and also
- 0:09happen to be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey, good morning everybody. From the very, very, very cold
- 0:32area, which is not my thing anyway, very dark girls are not
- 0:39awake. And I knew this morning I was
- 0:42going to talk to you about something that's near and dear
- 0:45to my heart, which obviously any of you who follow me regularly
- 0:49know I'm obsessed with growing things.
- 0:51So this is the time of the year when you start to get things
- 0:54ready, start looking at things that you want to plant.
- 0:57And I am actually in a workshop. This is the second time I'm
- 1:01taking it. I have I signed up for it last
- 1:03year and it was a very big deal for me.
- 1:05Put on by floret flowers And you have to apply early and then you
- 1:09get in at the workshop is already closed and but they send
- 1:13you this beautiful workbook and you're designing your cut
- 1:17flowers your garden. Now why are we talking about
- 1:19this? Why does anybody care about
- 1:21this? Because part of of the the
- 1:24importance of this to me is that it feeds this this belief that I
- 1:29have a core belief is you always keep learning.
- 1:32You never ever stop learning because when you stop learning,
- 1:37you lose your curiosity. You just completely lose it and
- 1:40you don't you don't pay attention to it.
- 1:43And when you are a lifelong learner, that is something that
- 1:48keeps you curious. So no, I'm not going to become a
- 1:52flower farmer where I'm just growing far flowers all the time
- 1:56and farming just flowers and selling them.
- 1:58That is not going to happen because my passion is doing what
- 2:02I'm doing right now, talking to you and coaching and training
- 2:04people. However, having a, a, a, a a
- 2:11moment where I can completely be consumed by flowers, growing
- 2:16flowers, understanding flowers, it, it makes me a better coach.
- 2:21Now how does that happen? Because it's something that that
- 2:25we all know happens, but we don't consciously think about
- 2:28it, which is cross pollination. That's like what I, I like to
- 2:31call it, meaning if I'm really good in one area, I can take
- 2:36those skills and cross pollinate them into another area.
- 2:39So if I become better at growing vegetables and flowers, I'm
- 2:44going to be better at growing anything because I can go over
- 2:47there and think of the principles, not necessarily the
- 2:50specific strategy for something, but the principal.
- 2:53So cross pollination is a very important thing to learn.
- 2:59I've talked about it on here before, but since it's the
- 3:01beginning of the year, we're touching on it again and I'm
- 3:04restarting the course now. One might wonder if you took the
- 3:08course last year, Kim, why are you taking it again?
- 3:11One, because it's a huge course. And two, because I'm still
- 3:16struggling with a lot of the parts of my farm with flowers.
- 3:21Now it is definitely a situation that shows up because of the
- 3:27the, the climate, the amount of water, everything.
- 3:31I'm in zone 8B and that is a very interesting zone to be in.
- 3:36It gives me all kinds of opportunities and all kinds of
- 3:40challenges. One can get excited about all
- 3:42kinds of opportunities, but the challenges are still present
- 3:45with it. So it's very important that I
- 3:47understand as much as I can about doing this.
- 3:51Also, I have, I have a real struggle with actually cutting
- 3:56the flowers. I love to grow them and love to
- 3:59photograph them, but when it comes to cutting them, I really
- 4:02have a hard time because I feel like, well, I'm taking them away
- 4:05from what they were supposed to be doing out there and I don't,
- 4:09I just want to let them sit there.
- 4:10So over time, at the last three years, I, the first year it was
- 4:15a disaster. I couldn't get anything to grow
- 4:17because I had these wrong seeds, wrong bulbs.
- 4:21Things would grow, but they wouldn't flower.
- 4:25I had it all wrong and I had to go back to this learning phase
- 4:30and that's when I got involved with the course.
- 4:31So the course just restarted and they just opened up week 1 and
- 4:37we're diving into it again. And I have to say, even though I
- 4:41took it and going through it and looking at it again, it is
- 4:45extraordinarily wonderful to be putting myself into a situation
- 4:49where I am learning again at that level about something
- 4:53that's just nothing but a complete passion.
- 4:56So the question I have for you is when's the last time you were
- 4:59learning about something that was just for a passion?
- 5:02Just not not for something that you say is work.
- 5:06I need to know this. I need to do my extended
- 5:09studies, I need to get my credits, my continuing
- 5:11education, none of that. Putting that all aside, when's
- 5:15the last time you just decided to try to learn something
- 5:18completely new? And it is incredible if you
- 5:23haven't done it in a long time, the studying factor, the reading
- 5:27factor, the keeping up factor, my friends, it's hard when you
- 5:30get older and you haven't been in school for a long time.
- 5:33But it is joyous when you start to really start see yourself
- 5:37remembering things and terrible with scientific names.
- 5:41I always have been. But I really love the fact that
- 5:44I'm I'm really trying to learn them.
- 5:46I'm studying them and saying, OK, what is this name?
- 5:49What is this name? This time around, I'm going to
- 5:51be doing flash cards with them so I can try to remember them.
- 5:54Now who's going to come and quiz me?
- 5:56Is, is the Martha Stewart Flower Police going to show up here and
- 5:59quiz me on it? No, but guess what?
- 6:01It's just going to make me feel good.
- 6:03So go out there and say, hey, I'm a lifelong learner and I'm
- 6:07starting this off right now. Pick something and start it
- 6:11because I promise you it will make you feel incredible.
- 6:14All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 6:16will see you later. Bye.
