- 0:00SPEAKER_02: It's Reverse Jackass.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to the Reverse Jackass Podcast, everyone.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: We are so glad you're here today.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: My name's Evelyn, the Canadian Blade.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Um, all the way up north here in Canada.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: And with me, down there in his balmy, beautiful weather that just apparently only gets handed out to God's favorite is my friend and co-host, Nick.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: And God's Nick, God's favorite Wagner.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: Maybe that's my new podcast lately.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: I'm not my parents' favorite, but it would be nice to be God's favorite if I can if I can't be Marianne and Frank's favorite.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, I think we're onto something here.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I really think.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: I only pause because I don't know.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Like, have have I ever said your last name when we introduce?
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: You have, and you put it on all of our collaterals, so it's it's it's out there.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: It's on the phone.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I'm like, is it a secret?
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: That's funny.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: I hadn't I hadn't clued in.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I yeah, I was talking faster than I was processing.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: So um yeah, Nick, God's favorite Bogner.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Nick, how are you doing today?
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And would you say hello to the people, please?
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: I I well, hello.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: First off, I'm glad you're here.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: Thank you for sitting here and witnessing Evelyn and I working out this thing.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: I'm almost thinking God's favorite Nick Bogner is a better one because it makes because Nick, God's favorite Bogner, makes it sound like I'm God's favorite of the Bogners rather than God's favorite all humankind.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: But also, God's favorite Nick Bogner is great because there's like two other Nick Bogners in at least in the States.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: There's a fistful of Nick Bogners.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: This uh fistful of Bogners.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Gosh, I'm gonna change my I'm gonna change my prompt.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna change my prompt today.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: That's what it is.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: And I'm gonna at the end of this, when you and I are not being recorded, I'm gonna tell you the other thing so you can save this for next week.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: But this is actually uh I I love this.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: A perfect ladies and gentlemen, uh here, episode 56.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: We have the perfect segue.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Wait, is it actually episode 56?
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: We're gonna it's not, and when we say stuff like that, it makes it wait.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Let me just sec.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: You're let me just wait a sec, because you're gonna go back.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: What I think you should do is you should do a you should do a cut over where you cut over.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: I'm like in a super monologue, 71.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Like that.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: I was looking at that was really weird.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: That was weird.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh, it's gonna be 71.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: You're like 71.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: So you just said it.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: You'll say, uh, but I want you to cut over it in a super obvious monotone kind of way.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: 71.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: Um okay, so it's about God's favorite Nick Bogner of all the Nick Bogners in the world.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: And it turns out that there are there are a handful of Nick Bogners, which is funny because in my life, I have not met somebody else that I wasn't related to that had the last name Bogner spelled this way.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: There's a more common spelling, which is ER.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Um, and I haven't met anybody with that spelling either.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: But I but it's one of those things where people have and it's a name, it's not the least common name out there.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: But other than my family, I don't meet people with this name.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: And so for a long time, I was kind of the only Nick Bogner, especially at the beginning of the internet.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: I think just I'm sure there was somebody before me, but age-wise, I was like the guy that got to everything first, right?
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: So okay.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: So, like, I shouldn't say this on the podcast, but my my email address is just what you think the email address would be if you wanted to use your name and it was the first person that got to your email service, right?
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: And when I was playing music, um, you know, and YouTube first went up, like, and you searched Nick Bogner on YouTube, like I was the person that came up, right?
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: And then slowly that started to change as other younger, hungrier Nick Bogners started to enter the scene.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: And the first thing that happened was I had paid a guy to do an animated music video for one of my old songs years ago.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: And then we put it up.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: And for a couple of years, if you did Nick Bogner, it just came up with my animated music video.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: And then after about two years, another music video surfaced from another Nick Bogner who I hadn't met before.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: And this Nick Bogner was and possibly still is a Christian rapper.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: And not a talented Christian rapper.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: And it might be that he's on a podcast right now going, oh, there was kind of a pop rock guy who was the first Nick Bogner up there.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: It's not for me.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: You know, for me, I'm a I'm here to rap in his name, capital H, but like, but not a talented fellow, right?
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: And he had a music video with his his particular brand of Christian rap on it.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: Some years later, somebody named Nick Bogner, spelled the same as me.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: This is about 15, 20 years later, won a James Beard Award.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Do you know what a James Beard Award is?
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's within the food industry.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Yes, but it is the top award in the food industry.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, yes, okay.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Oscars of chefs.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Oscars of chefs, yeah.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: It is a it is a thing where when you've won a James Beard Award, you join a select small group of people, and there's people who have James Beards Awards and people who don't, right?
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: So you either get to say, I'm James Beard Award winning chef Jim Dodge, who's a real James Beard Award winner who I've met, who's a wonderful guy, or you get to say, Hey, I've done everything in the world, but I haven't gotten that Beard Award.
- 4:56unknown: Yeah.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's the beards and the beard knots.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: That's true, right?
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: So Nick Bogner of Missouri, of St.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Louis, won a James Beard Award for his Asian fusion restaurant.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: And I don't know him.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: I don't think I'm related to him, but he is officially the first Nick Bogner that surpassed me in terms of importance, renown, accomplishment.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: And I think it would be indisputable that my music is neither as skilled and nuanced or as celebrated as his culinary accomplishments.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Well, your music is not ever going to get a James Beard Award.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: So and it's not because it's it's not because it's not, it's not because it's subpar.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: It's just because you don't qualify.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: So you can find comfort in that.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: Well, I agree, except that except that this is another thing.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: When I worked at the restaurant at the Guinea Center, I met James Beard, and I got a chance to play him one of my albums, and he said, This is fucking trash to my face.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Did he actually say that?
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: He did.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: He was he was cruel and dismissive.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: No, I'm kidding.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: He's been dead for a long time.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: I was like, what?
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: Wouldn't that be amazing?
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: The ghost of James Beard came and and uh and destroyed my art and my dreams.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: The ghost of James Beard sounds like a Gordon Lightfoot song, who from previous episodes we know play has the top amount of Frances of Massey Hall in Toronto, Ontario.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Well, the ovens are hot and the walk-ins are cold.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: Fucking gorgeous.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: That was that was brilliant.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: That was fantastic.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: So I had a girlfriend years ago whose mom got wasted and made us listen to the wreck of the admin speed girl because she thought it was so moving.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: It's the song is 25 minutes long if you haven't heard it before.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a real swaying back and forth with her fucking glass of wine in her hand.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: She's like, listen to it, listen to it.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: It's important.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: We're all like, God, we don't care.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Anyway, this is all off topic.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: So like I'd rather listen to I'd rather listen to Jan's intern Hunter from the office saying, You took me by the hand.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: I'd rather be on the Edmund Fitzgerald than listen to the wreck with the Edmund German.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, so the favorite time that I was reminded that I wasn't the only Nick Bogner on this planet was one time about six or seven years ago, I was checking my email and I got an email from somebody that I hadn't met before.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: You know the story that I hadn't met before saying with instructions on how uh a kids' little league soccer team was gonna was gonna come together.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: And it was like, okay, so you need to bring the the coolers, this person needs to bring the shin guards, you need to bring this.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: It was like a mass email to a bunch of people, including me, about all the logistics for this thing.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: And I thought, well, clearly this person means to send this to a different Nick Bogner.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: And so I wrote a really nice response and I said, Hey there, I uh I think you meant to send this to somebody else.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: I'm Nick Bogner, I'm a therapist in California.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: My best of you know, best of luck to you, like just you know, send this email to whoever it belongs to in a nice way.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: And he responded back an hour later and he said, Dude, I really need you to take this seriously.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: So that's where I learned that there's another Nick Wagner who has a child who plays soccer in some other state, and that Nick Bagner apparently is also something of a rascal.
- 8:00unknown: Yeah.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: Because this guy didn't even think for a second he had the wrong email address.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: He thought, damn it, Nick, if you fuck up this soccer practice thing for me again, like I'm sick of your shit.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I dude, I really need you to take this seriously.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Nick, this is not the time or the place.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Bring the shin guards.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: I didn't respond to it, and I have no idea what happened.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: And my only hope is that, like, is that the next soccer practice that Nick didn't show up, and the guy was like, Why do you always fucking do this to me?
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: And and as a result, there is a probably a now teenager out there with the weakest, most splintered shins in his family.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, who can't fucking walk.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he can't even walk.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: He can't even walk.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: There were there were no lawn chairs, there were no snacks, and his shins are splintered to high heaven.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: And there's some other Nick Bogner Jr.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: in in some therapist's office going, and my dad signed me up for soccer, and then he never took me to practice.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: The other kids made fun of me, and I was an asshole.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it's a real it's a real chain reaction.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: You're exactly right.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: It's a chain reaction.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: So my question for you, Evelyn, is what is the biggest case of mistaken identity in your life?
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, you know, I don't, I don't think I have one, but I do have stories of people with both of my names.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: So my my full maiden name and my full married name.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: You have both.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Let us have them.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: So my maiden name was King, and in high school King Evelyn.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Nope, other way around.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: In high school, it was discovered that there was an 80s pop star named Evelyn King.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And like, what a shocker to all of us.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: No kidding.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: A lot of friends of mine, we got a lot of fuel out of this.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Yep, look it up.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, look it up.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: We look almost identical, by the way.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: It was quite uncanny.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: And her middle name in quotes, you're laughing because you see how much alike we look.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: You don't look exactly like Evelyn Champagne King.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: There it is.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: Evelyn The disco singer, the African-American disco singer.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: No, it's not, it's not a carbon copy.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Her big hit, Love Come Down, that was the big one.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: And my friends got a lot of fuel out of out of this in high school.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Like, I had a friend who bought me her CD.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: I owned that CD for a while.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: It wasn't my jam, but I would actually probably listen to it now.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: In fact, maybe I will after we're done recording this, just for just for old time's sake.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: But I thought I had heard the end of that in high school.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Fast forward about 20 years, and I'm teaching and I'm at the school I spent most of my career at.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: And I'm walking down the hall one day, and I was not married for the first two years I was at this school.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: And so I was still, you know, Miss King.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: I was walking down the hall one day, and a colleague pokes his head out of the classroom door and says, champagne.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Oh, no kidding.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: And he proceeded to call me that m for the next 13 years.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Champagne.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: Was that welcome?
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Or was that?
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: I didn't mind it.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: I didn't mind it.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: I was I was surprised.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Was it like Bill or Ted?
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: No, it was it was very, it was not Bill or Ted, because I would have throat punched those guys.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: Uh no, this this was this was so funny.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: I was like, I can't believe like that's totally crazy to me.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: So I was surprised that two people decades apart who never knew each other and I had never told this story kind of found out about this, which I thought was kind of hilarious.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: And also the cool thing was about being, you know, Evelyn King as a teacher is that if kids Googled me, that's all they'd find.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Like they wouldn't, they found nothing on me.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: I don't even think I had I don't think I had Facebook at this point.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: I didn't even have any hit songs out there.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: I had a song I had tried to write years ago called Love Come Up, but you know, it didn't make it, and she beat me with her single Love Come Down.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: I thought that's too that's too coincidental.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: I was gonna make you sing Love Come Up.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: I thought it was a real song.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: No, your face was like was very intrigued.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: You're what really?
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: Um, but she beat me to it, and I probably could be as famous as she was if I had published my song first.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: So that's a story of me, it's not a mistaken identity, but it's certainly an odd, like a very odd thing that you know, someone with my name was out there, and also if one person came up with it, that'd be funny.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: The fact that two people came up with it was interesting.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: My current name, my married name, uh, I realized there was um another Evelyn Flanagan in the world, and not just in the world, and not just in Canada, and not just in Ontario, but in all of our hearts, in all of our hearts, and in London, Ontario.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, there is another Evelyn Flanagan.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: And I learned this when I went to the pharmacy one day to pick up my medication, and they said, What's the name?
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: And I said, The last name's Flanagan, and they said, Your first name, and I said, Evelyn, and they said, Which one?
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: And I said, What?
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: He said, He said, The one with the toe fungus.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Am I gonna have to say it out loud?
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: God, what is you guys' problem?
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: I turn around and say to the five people waiting behind me, I'm sorry you had to hear this.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Are you all happy?
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Does anybody else have any questions about my about my medical history?
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Like, oh, okay, and it's not asthma Evelyn, it's toe fungus Evelyn.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Sorry that I have eczema all over my hands and I'm gonna touch the pin pad of the debit machine.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: But you can you guys uh can the pharmacist come to the front desk?
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: We got uh toe fungus Evelyn here at the front.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: We walk in the door, hey toefung! It's so good.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: No, no, are those close toad?
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Don't come any closer.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, we'll just we'll just throw you your meds from under the counter.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Like it's yeah.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: So now every time I go in there, I say I'm picking up my medication.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Last name is Flanagan, and I always say it's the one on Ba Bah Bah.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: And like they're like, thank you every time.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: And I am just dying to meet, and actually, I think once when they asked which one I was, they gave me the option, like they said the other Evelyn's street name and my street name, and I was like, ooh, not cool.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: But also, also, because I'm not gonna like you know drive there and be like, oh the other Evelyn is in the same area of the city as I am.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Like this is this is so weird to me.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Never met her.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Why not?
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: Doesn't this feel like something you should do?
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go to Nick Bogger's restaurant at some point and eat there.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: I don't know if he'll be there or if he'll have me, but I'm gonna meet that guy.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: You don't think you need to meet Asma Evelyn?
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: I need to meet Asma Evelyn.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: You're gonna meet her one day and you're gonna feel so bad that you made fun of her on this podcast.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: I know, I know.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: That's why I'm not going to.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: I bet she's lovely.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: I hope she's not as lovely of an Evelyn as I am.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: And I I don't know.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: My history, my track record with Evelyn's Flanagan has not been great.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: And so I don't know that I take it for granted that she's that she's creative.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: We're just talking about precedence here.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's that's fair.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: I um would have been nice if maybe we could have had this discussion before before we worked together for over four years and decided to record a podcast again.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: That's the point about peace talks, is they happen when they happen.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, you know what?
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: You're right.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Well, let me, you know what?
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: While we're talking about it, let me just let me just pull up my list here.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Uh oh.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Uh-oh.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: No, we'll save that for another episode.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Um, so I can't say I've actually ever had a a stolen identity.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: I do in public get a lot of um, you know, do you have a sister who lives in?
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Or do you have a relative?
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: Like I I even had a woman, I was at the market downtown once, and I walked in, like part of it's outside, and you know, part of it's in this massive building.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: And so I walked inside and a lady came up to me and gave me the hugest hug.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: And while she was giving me a hug, she was like, Hey, Carol, or something like Carol, I've missed you so much.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: And as she's hugging me, she goes, Oh my god, you're not Carol.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Like, she said, I walked in and she thought I'm so horny.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: I am no.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: I can't even like keep up with you anymore.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: This is like I'm I'm sorry.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: No, you're not.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: No, you're not.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Please never, never change.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Um, like I hugged her back.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: Like, that's just what I do.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: I she clearly needed it.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: She I was like, I don't know, you gave a pretty nice hug.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: I didn't want to let you down, I guess, but I'm definitely not Carol.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: And we had such a good laugh over it, but I've never actually had someone mistake my identity for somebody else.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Count yourself lucky because there could be there could be a Christian rapper out there dragging you, dragging your name through the mud and hit capital H his name.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: A million years ago when I was playing music, my friend Jennifer said, Hey, you should you should sing that song you used to sing about the baby in a basket.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: I haven't heard that in a long time.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Baby in a basket.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: And so we spent like a month.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: The baby in the basket, the baby, like the song, it's a baby in a basket.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: And I was like, I have no idea what you're talking about.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: She goes, You used to play it at your shows and you don't play it anymore.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, What the fuck?
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: And so one day I'm just, you know, I have a long set list and I'm just digging through my sheet that has all the songs, and I play this song by Fountains of Wayne called Leave the Biker.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: And we got done, and she goes, That's the song.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: And I was like, There's nothing about a baby or a basket any what are you talking?
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: And she goes, Oh, that's the song I was thinking about.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: And it's like, we were never gonna fucking get there.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: I will tell you, even though you didn't ask, about some of my favorite misspellings of my name.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, beyond right when Jason, when Jason asked me to marry him, we did have a funny conversation about how am I ready to correct the spelling of my last name for the rest of my life?
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: And I said yes.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: I was like, Are you ready to give up peanut butter?
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: And he was like, Yes.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: I'm like, great, this is gonna work out just fine.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: So flanagan is spelled.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: I always say flanagan with one N is kind of how I start, or F-L-A-N-A-G-A-N.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: Like I kind of say the rhythm of it, and I still get Flanagan with the two N's in the eye, right?
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: It's a A's.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: I know, I know, but you do get like like Mrs.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: Hannigan.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, I did get called that at school a lot too, Mrs.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: Hannigan, because it rhymed with Flanagan, like it's low-hanging fruit.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: But the flanagan spelled like Hannigan, but with a the F L, right?
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: Like that's how I would get it spelled.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: Doing the Starbucks thing, and I've heard you know, they they do this when they write your name on the cup, they do this so you take pictures and post it on your socials, and it's meant for free advertising for them because they misspell your name.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but one of the my favorite misspelling of my first name, because there's two different ones, obviously.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: First name was spelled A B I L I N.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Oh Ablein.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Abeline.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: And I would I literally said Evelyn, like I really enunciate Evelyn.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Like I really sometimes I sometimes I just say Aaron.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I just make up a name, right?
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: Comes so close to ableist, which is what all the jokes are that I want to make about whoever wrote your name that way.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: That's yes, Abelyn.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: But then one year there was like a festival in the city.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: It was like a music festival, and I wanted to buy like a month pass for it.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: This is run by volunteers working the tables at the front doors, and those volunteers are often roughly a hundred, yes, but 175 years old.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: Just the oldest losers.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: Just if you ever wanted to go back to the losers of yesteryear, look no further than the volunteers at this music festival.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, honestly, the front tables, and they they are just imagine like these octogenarian women.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: It's these slumps, they run that front door like with an iron fist.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: And so right, because they're volunteering, they're gonna do the best job they can.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: So I I bought, I paid the money.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: It's it was$15.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: I handed them, I handed them a Terry and a tenor.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: And uh and then you get a little piece of cardboard, right?
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: And it has all it looks very formal, and there's a space for your name on it.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: And I thought I got to write it, but I didn't.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: I didn't get to write this name at all.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: She wrote it.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: I still I still have it somewhere.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: I think I kept it.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: She said, now what's your name?
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: And I said, Evelyn.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: E-V-E-L-Y-N.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Like that's kind of the again, the rhythm of how I say it.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: So she's spelling it out, and it would be a name her vintage would of her generation.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: Of her generation, yep.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: And then I said flanagan, and I saw her write the letter S to start, as in S as in Sam.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: As in Slanigan, as in Evelyn Slanigan, which is what she wrote on that piece of paper.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: And not only did she spell it with an S, but she spelled it the wrong way.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: So it's S-L A-N-I-G-A-N.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: It truly is a hard knock life.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: Trust me, after she filled that out, I was definitely drinking gin in a bathtub.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: Evelyn Slanigan.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: So I have often thought if I ever need like a pseudonym or a gnome deplume or something, it's gonna be Ableyn Slanigan.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: That's just gonna that's gonna be my name.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Because it's close enough to my name that people will be like, that sounds like Evelyn Flanagan, but it can't be her because it's too close.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Guess what, guys?
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: It is the next 13 mystery novels you're reading, written by Abelyn Slanigan.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Written by Abelist Slandergan.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Abelist Slandergan.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: I will say sometimes when I'm typing your name, like if it's in an email or something, the amount of times I accidentally type Bick Nogner is concerning, but also amazing and makes me laugh every time.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: That is concerning.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: Speaking of Bic Nogner, yeah.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: In elementary school, there was a guy that I went to school with and high school named Nate Bick, who was like always next to me in the role, but like but like if you can imagine, and I hope he's not listening to this, although he must know this at this point.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: If you can imagine a kid who was who had At all.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: And was the nicest kid ever.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: Like, Nate was like one of the best looking dudes I've ever met in my whole life.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: And he was funny.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: He still is.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: He was talented.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: He was like super nice.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: Like Nate had all of the equipment to be the worst human being ever.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: And he was the opposite.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: He was this lovely, kind, funny, wonderful guy.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: Like just the total package.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I really hope he's not listening.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, I don't know.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: It sounds like I'm trying to, it sounds like I'm trying to marry him, but like this is just this is the truth about Nate, right?
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: And I'm using his real name here because honestly, I have nothing but the nicest things to say about Nate.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: And there's just no reason for me to anonymize him here.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: You could look him up and Nate.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: Congratulations.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: And he, and I and I want to be mean about it, but I can't, because he's never been anything but like the nicest dude ever.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: But you know, nobody should be born with this much raw everything.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: But I remember the one time that he ever got his, we were in fourth grade and we got our final report cards.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: And there was the little comment that the teacher writes, speaking of people from that generation.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: You know, she was 125 back then, and that was 1989.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: So she was like a full post-Civil War relic this teacher.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: And she but in her prime, but in her prime.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: In her prime, killing it.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: She she wrote on my report card, it has been so great having him in my class.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: And on Nate's report card, she wrote, It has been so great having Nick in my class.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: So that's how we learned that she was writing virtually the same comment on all the things, but also Nate for once got like called Nick.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: And that's yes, that's a folly for a long time.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: In all in all fairness, like that, that on attendance list when you have Nate Bick and then Nick Bogner, like that to me, that would drive me nuts, and I would mess it up verbally all the time.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: And Nate would get called Nick, and Nick would get called Nate, and like someone would end up being called Nate Bogner, and someone would be calling Nick Bick.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Like it would just as hard as I would try.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: Are you stroking out over there?
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: What's going on?
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Do you want that to be part of the record?
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: Do you want that to go on the record that that a a con that a role like that would be confusing and limiting for you?
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Not limiting for 25 years.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: But if I got a role like that, who boy, it'd be uh there'd be sweat on my brow every no, you know what?
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: I I'll admit it, like it was the names that were so simple that I would trip over like this.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: Like we had students from the Middle East with like incredibly incredibly long names that would require a little bit of practice in order for that individual to be comfortable, like in the class, knowing like I didn't want to be tripping over their name the first day of school.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: I wanted to learn it.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: That's appropriate.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: Yep, that's what you do, that's how you respect someone.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: But then Nick Nate Bogner comes in my room, and I'm like, oh no, this is that's gonna be the one.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: That's gonna be the one I stub my toe on every day.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm sorry.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: That's I I will put that on the record.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: I'm not ashamed of it.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: And the kids and the and the Middle Eastern kids in your class are like, she fucking nails far had mzude.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: Like every yes, every day, but every day she she Gail Cooper just trips her up.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Yes, honestly, what's wrong with Mrs.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: Plannigan?
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Looks like she needs some meds.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: She better get them at the pharmacy.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: She's gonna get her toes.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: She better get the right ones.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: It doesn't seem like she needs medication for ringworm.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: It's more like it's something neurological.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: I thought the story was gonna be that they gave you the wrong meds and that you were taking an inhaler for your toe fungus for six months and that the other Evelyn died because she tried to put some antifungal in her lungs.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, you do, however, this works out, as long as we don't get mixed up.
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: Although maybe it would be good to have both of us in for a meeting at the pharmacy at the same time to just clear the air.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: I'm sure there's gonna be some editing on this episode, but I gotta see if we can find Evelyn.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm gonna Google this.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: Evelyn Flanagan, London, Ontario.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Let's see if I can find Elena.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: You're probably gonna get uh reverse jackass stuff coming up.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: Digital support for thoughtful therapists.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: That's you.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: CBC is the second thing.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Uh oh, okay.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: Doris, Doris Evelyn Flanagan Obituary.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: Well, the third thing I see is the uh 2019-2020 Bishop Townsend Award winner.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, and then yeah, the funeral home.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: That's fifth for me.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: It's interesting that we're getting different Google results.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: I love that Evelyn was Doris's nickname.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: I'm also seeing an obituary, but I don't see anything named Doris.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: Doris, Evelyn Flanagan Obituary, 1942 to 2024.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: Evelyn's are dropping like flies here, is what I'm learning.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: Especially Evelyn's Flanagan.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: Um this is I'm not making fun of this.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: Here's your mom's obituary.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: Oh, nice! It's a nice photo.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: I almost said thank you, and then I realized I had nothing to do.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, awesome.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: I want to ask a question, and I know we're in a comedy space, and I don't mean this as a comedy question.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: I'm curious.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: What is behind the spelling of Roberta?
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: R-E-U-B-E-R-T-R- Oh, Ruberta.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: That was my great grandma's name.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: That was her grandmother's name.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: Where is that from?
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: Ruberta.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: Because it's obviously Roberta, but I've never seen that spelled that way.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: She hated that spelling.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: She always felt it was really ugly.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: I loved it, first of all.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: I thought the spelling was fantastic.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: Outside of my family is.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Oh, how interesting.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: So anyway.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: Anyway.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna leave so much of this in.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be uh yeah, I was about to say, you I trust your discretion there.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: So that's that's our uh mistaken identity slash obituary uh episode of the reverse jackass podcast.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: We're so glad you were there with us today.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: Uh as it often happens, it devolved into us looking at our phones, but we're glad that you were there for us for the part where we were creating content.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm Nick.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: With me as always is Evelyn the Canadian Blade.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: Evelyn, say goodbye to the people.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: If you have hung in here this long, that means you are a true reverse jackass member.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: And maybe you just really wanted to see how bad this would get.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: Maybe you listen to reverse jackass because you just like laughing with us.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: Maybe you listen to reverse jackass because you hate both of us and hope that one of us is actually going to keel over dead in one of these episodes, right?
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: Maybe you listen to it because you were told about a different podcast that was either named Reverse Jackass or something like reverse jackass, and you end up on ours instead.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: Who knows?
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're just creeping these podcasts and hoping we'll never know that you're listening to them and you have voodoo dolls.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we don't know what makes you tick.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: And we don't want to know.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: We're just glad you're listening.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: I want you to email us at reversejackass at gmail.com and that's the email address, right?
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: And then um tell us what you hated and loved about this episode, and then tell all your friends to subscribe to it.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: I want to give a quick shout out at the end here to Jill, one of our listeners.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: Jill is a reverse jackass OG, and Jill told me that she received her postcard in the mail, put it on the fridge.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Two beautiful things happened because of this.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: Number one, her daughter wanted to fill out the little puzzle on the back, and she did, which was great, which was really funny.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: And you don't get to know what that puzzle is until you get a postcard sent to you.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: So once you get your postcard, you'll know how funny this is.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: And the second thing is her sister-in-law was visiting, saw her postcard, was like, hey, that seems pretty cool.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Scanned the QR code.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: What?
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: Now listening.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: I know, isn't that exciting?
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: I have always had a thing for people named Jill, and I've always had a thing for people's sisters.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: So I'm on board with this.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: This is just the such a weird doorknob confession you just made there.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Any other weird things you want?
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: I think that's great.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, welcome, Jill's Nameless Sister.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: Jill, thank you for keeping it real with us.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: Always.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: We love you.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: We love all of you.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: Thank you for being here.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: That's it for us this week at the longest outro ever.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: Say, Evelyn, say goodbye to the people.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: Goodbye.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Goodbye.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: Some neighbors are besties.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: Others quarrel bitterly.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: Stuck together through geography.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: One of us has nukes, and the other has tokes.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: It's American Canadian diplomacy.
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: It's revers.
