- 0:00Good morning, good evening, good afternoon, good wherever you are.
- 0:05Uh, welcome to our very first episode of our podcast on the same page, a KCPL podcast.
- 0:12I'm Evan.
- 0:14And I'm Tanya.
- 0:16And we are your co-hosts for this brand new adventure.
- 0:21Uh, it doesn't seem real.
- 0:22We've been working a long time on this, haven't we?
- 0:24Yeah.
- 0:25I can't believe we're recording the first episode already.
- 0:28Yeah.
- 0:28It's, it's kind of, it's kind of strange.
- 0:31I look forward to maybe, you know, a year or two from now, coming back
- 0:35and listening to this and being like, wow, this was so different.
- 0:40So I look forward to seeing what this becomes.
- 0:43Uh, but today we're going to get started by introducing us and who we
- 0:49are, why we're here and what are we doing?
- 0:52That's kind of the plan for today.
- 0:55Let's start with the introduction of this podcast itself.
- 0:58This podcast was created to be a place for people who love to read.
- 1:04It was created for a place for Kanawha County Public Library patrons to have
- 1:09a connection to staff, to celebrate reading, celebrate all the things that
- 1:14libraries do, and we also hope maybe we'll get some listeners outside of
- 1:19Kanawha County, that's, that's kind of what we're hoping for.
- 1:23Yeah.
- 1:24Kind of grow our library community and have a space where people can know
- 1:29what's going on with library and sort of hang out with us here on the podcast.
- 1:33Absolutely.
- 1:35So why don't we talk about our like library origin story?
- 1:42So what, what is your, been your experience with libraries, work outside
- 1:48of work, kind of both of those things together?
- 1:50So when I was a kid, probably it was the time I went to the
- 1:53library the most before working here.
- 1:56I grew up in Barbersville, so I went to the Barbersville library and
- 1:59we would go every single Friday.
- 2:01It was my favorite day of the week.
- 2:03And I would check out Goosebump Books pretty, pretty much every single Friday.
- 2:08And I think I read all of them that the library had, and I checked them out so
- 2:13regularly and so consistently that when it came time for them to weed out the
- 2:19collection, one of the librarians sent me a whole stack of Goosebump Books that
- 2:25I got to take with me when I left fifth grade and went to middle school.
- 2:29So that's like, that's my soft spot for libraries story that I have.
- 2:35You know, I remember, so like, I see a lot of kids come in now who like
- 2:39come when they're little, little.
- 2:40I didn't come to the library when I was, you know, super small.
- 2:45I actually remember what brought me to the library and that was Arthur.
- 2:49I remember watching an episode of Arthur and he goes to the library and there's
- 2:54just all these books and I remember telling my grandmother like, I want to go, let's go.
- 3:01So that's what led me to go to a library.
- 3:04I had always loved stories and we had books at home.
- 3:08Like I didn't, you know, realize there was this place with all these other books.
- 3:13And so Arthur was kind of my entryway into visiting the library.
- 3:17And that was probably shortly before kindergarten.
- 3:22I mean, just a little bit before kindergarten, I think when that happened.
- 3:26So I grew up going to libraries all the time.
- 3:29My family would go to all the programs that libraries had.
- 3:33We were, we were program hoppers.
- 3:36So like, you know how libraries will have the same program at multiple locations?
- 3:41We would go to those same programs at multiple locations.
- 3:44So we could, you know, do the crafts and do the things more than one time because
- 3:49that's how much we loved being at the library.
- 3:51And so we traveled, we kind of had a home location that was our, like we went to most
- 3:57often, but we were at all kinds of different libraries for all different things.
- 4:01Was the St.
- 4:01Albans library your original library too?
- 4:04It was.
- 4:05That's so cool.
- 4:06Yeah, it was.
- 4:07And so that's now where I work.
- 4:08So that's kind of, kind of cool that it was like my, my home spot is the patron
- 4:13and now as, as working for KCPL, St.
- 4:17Albans is that spot for me.
- 4:19So that's kind of like a full circle.
- 4:21I even volunteered here in the summer for the volunteer program.
- 4:25So, you know, I've, I have quite a bit of library experience as a patron, and then
- 4:32I've been with the library for almost 12 years.
- 4:36So.
- 4:37Your 12 year anniversary is coming up soon, isn't it?
- 4:41Yes.
- 4:41June and June, June the 4th.
- 4:43So yeah, it's coming up.
- 4:45It is coming up.
- 4:46Kind of crazy to believe it's been that long, but I've loved every minute of it.
- 4:50So it all started from Arthur.
- 4:52It all started from Arthur.
- 4:54That's right.
- 4:55And so, you know, a couple of years ago when Mark Brown came to the book
- 4:58festival, I loved that because he was the, you know, writer of Arthur and he
- 5:04worked with the TV show as well.
- 5:06So I love that.
- 5:07And now this year with R.L.
- 5:09Stein and your goosebumps entry to the library world.
- 5:14So, you know, it's kind of funny that we both got to, well, not yet, but we both
- 5:20will have an opportunity to experience meeting those people who kind of
- 5:24brought us into library world.
- 5:25So that's kind of, that's kind of really cool.
- 5:28That is so cool.
- 5:29I'm so excited that he's coming to the book festival, honestly.
- 5:33It should be a good time.
- 5:35Yeah.
- 5:35He was here.
- 5:36He was here.
- 5:37I don't know how many years ago, but when he was here, it was a big deal.
- 5:41And I think it's a big deal this time.
- 5:43So that'll be good.
- 5:45Yeah.
- 5:45I can't wait.
- 5:46Okay.
- 5:47So now let's talk about what we currently do at the library.
- 5:51What does our current roles look like?
- 5:53Do you want to go first?
- 5:55Sure.
- 5:55I'll go first.
- 5:57I am currently the media coordinator for the library.
- 6:01I obviously work on this podcast and have helped you get, get
- 6:06your idea off the ground.
- 6:08And I also put out the patron newsletter every month and I update the community
- 6:15boards and things downstairs at the library involved with promoting things
- 6:19on Facebook and promoting the book festival when that happens and also
- 6:26summer library club, which I think we'll talk about here in a little while.
- 6:30Oh, we absolutely will.
- 6:32Yeah.
- 6:32Uh, and so my role, I am what is called a branch administrative specialist,
- 6:38which means I work right underneath the, uh, manager and, uh, help with
- 6:44scheduling, ordering supplies, doing some like onsite training with staff.
- 6:50And I'm kind of like the, just basically the second in command.
- 6:54So anytime the manager's out, you know, I kinda can fill some parts of that
- 6:59role and I also spend time working on the front desk with patrons.
- 7:05So that's kind of a natural evolved.
- 7:08Cause I started out just as a library assistant too, at part time.
- 7:13And then I moved up to full time and then I moved into
- 7:15the branch admin specialist.
- 7:17So I kinda had like a stepping stone to get where, where I'm at now.
- 7:22So you've done a lot of things at your branch and have been in a lot of
- 7:26different roles over there at the library.
- 7:28I have, you know, back in the day, LA twos or library assistant twos,
- 7:34as we call them, did not do a whole lot of programming, but I was
- 7:38doing programming from the start.
- 7:40When I was in college, I did some programming at the university library.
- 7:44And after I got through my first year, my branch manager at the time, let me do
- 7:50programs and host events as a library assistant too, who was part time at that
- 7:56point.
- 7:57So I've been doing that all along.
- 8:00I do quite a few different things.
- 8:02I've got a lot of, quite a few different roles that I play.
- 8:06And you do your programming now.
- 8:08I know you do the true crime club.
- 8:10Yes, I do a true crime club once a month on the last Tuesday of the month.
- 8:15And we'll talk about different cases, different themes, different
- 8:18things relating to true crime.
- 8:20Coming up this summer, we're going to do some true crime games we're going to play.
- 8:24And so, yeah, I do that on the last Tuesday.
- 8:27And then I also have a book club that I run.
- 8:29Those are my two main programs that I do right now.
- 8:33And it's also possible that the summer I might be throwing in an extra thing
- 8:38for the summer library club, but I won't talk about that till the next podcast.
- 8:42So there's a little, there's a little teaser of something that's coming up
- 8:47this summer that I'll, I'll talk about next time.
- 8:50Well, if you're in charge of it, I know it's going to be fun.
- 8:53Oh, well, thank you.
- 8:54I try, I try.
- 8:56That's what we do here.
- 8:57And we also, as Tanya said, we do the podcast, uh, cause
- 9:01you're listening to us right now.
- 9:03So let's let the audience get to know us a little bit better.
- 9:08So we're going to throw out some random questions, uh, random
- 9:12conversation topics, sort of.
- 9:14And we'll talk about those just so you guys can get a feel of who we are.
- 9:20So, uh, this one I'm going to do first.
- 9:24I'd actually don't see it on the list of topics, but I think it's a good one.
- 9:29Let's talk about what kind of reader are you?
- 9:34What do you enjoy reading?
- 9:36So do you mean like genre?
- 9:39Yeah.
- 9:39Genre.
- 9:40Yeah.
- 9:40Or how do you, do you prefer audio?
- 9:43Do you prefer like reading physical?
- 9:46Like what, what kind of reader are you?
- 9:48I gotcha.
- 9:49So I love the horror genre in general, like movies, books, everything.
- 9:55So I really like to read horror.
- 9:58Um, I often do audio books because I like to take walks outside.
- 10:05So that makes it a lot easier back in the day.
- 10:08I used to like read and walk with a book at the same, I was that person.
- 10:14So audio books just make that a lot easier to be able to do the last
- 10:19couple of books I've read were, I read Kathleen Hannah's, uh, autobiography,
- 10:25which was the rebel girl book, um, about how she started bikini kill.
- 10:30And I really loved that.
- 10:32Very inspiring.
- 10:33And I also reread Carrie, the Stephen King book, because there was like a new
- 10:4050th anniversary edition that came out, um, that Margaret Atwood did the intro
- 10:45for, and it had just been a long time since I read it.
- 10:48So reread that one and they're making a mini series for it this, this fall.
- 10:55So,
- 10:56Oh, wow.
- 10:57That'll be cool.
- 10:57That'll be cool.
- 10:58Uh, a mini series for, for Carrie sounds, sounds very interesting.
- 11:03Yeah.
- 11:03And it's kind of funny that you said, like, you like reading horror.
- 11:08You started out with goosebumps.
- 11:09It seems like that's the natural progression there into.
- 11:12Yeah.
- 11:13I've always loved creepy, creepy stuff.
- 11:16So, and I imagine audio books that are creepy sometimes that adds like a whole
- 11:23new level and layer with the way that someone performs that and reads it and,
- 11:28you know, makes it that much more, you know, scary.
- 11:33So I imagine that that adds another special layer to that.
- 11:36Yeah.
- 11:37So for me, uh, I read, I read all kinds of stuff.
- 11:41I'm all over the place.
- 11:43Uh, typically what I do is I've become one of those people that I
- 11:48have multiple books going at once.
- 11:50Now I'm not too crazy with it.
- 11:52I know some people that have three or four.
- 11:56I can't do that.
- 11:57I have two, two is my max.
- 11:59And typically what that looks like is one actual book and one audio book.
- 12:06That's typically how I, I have it going there.
- 12:08And I prefer reading, reading like fantasy, fiction, romance, like
- 12:16anything that's in that fiction world.
- 12:18I prefer reading it myself.
- 12:21And then for audio, I do a lot of like nonfiction and memoirs.
- 12:26Uh, I love listening to memoirs on audio because usually it's
- 12:30the author that's reading it.
- 12:32And I feel like, I feel like I'm sitting down with them and they're
- 12:36telling me their life story.
- 12:38That's how, uh, Kathleen Hannah's was.
- 12:40I checked that one out on Hoopla and she did her own audio book.
- 12:45It was really cool.
- 12:46Oh, I absolutely love when someone, now there's been a few exceptions
- 12:50where I've listened to memoirs where it wasn't read by the actual person.
- 12:55However, uh, both of those were done by an actor who was reading it.
- 13:03So like they had this level of making it sound like it was their real story.
- 13:07So, uh, that would be the Britney Spears, the woman in me, uh,
- 13:13Michelle Williams did that one.
- 13:15And then me by Elton John was read by Taron Egerton who played him in the movie.
- 13:23So like, you know, it was, it was a cool performance.
- 13:28So that's, that's what I listened to mostly.
- 13:32And I read, uh, fiction, so that's, that's who I am as a reader.
- 13:37I could, I could go more into, which I'm sure at some point I will cover this
- 13:41about why I prefer to read fiction and why I listened to nonfiction.
- 13:46I have like a theory about why I do that, but you know, that's just,
- 13:50that's just how I prefer to do things.
- 13:52So how about you throw the next one at me?
- 13:56Okay.
- 13:56So another one that we had talked about before is our favorite
- 14:03comfort movie or comfort show.
- 14:06Yeah.
- 14:06Okay.
- 14:07So for me, my favorite comfort show is actually a series of shows.
- 14:14I couldn't just pick one, uh, unless I absolutely have to, but I really
- 14:19like shows that are by Michael Schur.
- 14:22Uh, he is the guy who is behind The Office, Parks and Rec, and Brooklyn
- 14:27Nine-Nine are three that I adamantly watch by him.
- 14:32I can just throw those on and it just feels good.
- 14:36I know the story.
- 14:38I know like everything gets resolved in one episode.
- 14:42They're hilarious.
- 14:43Uh, and they're just, just feel good.
- 14:46Even though Parks and Rec, I will say I do have a small, small grudge with
- 14:50Parks and Rec and how they portray libraries and how, I know it's humorous.
- 14:55I know it's funny.
- 14:56The parks department versus the library.
- 14:58I know it's funny, but yeah, that's the one I'm like, come on.
- 15:04Is that where Tammy too works or one of the Tammys?
- 15:06That is where Tammy works.
- 15:08Yes.
- 15:08She works at the library.
- 15:10Yes.
- 15:11And it's not, it's not a very good portrayal of, uh, what a librarian should
- 15:16be, but you know, it's all in good fun.
- 15:18Amy Poehler has, uh, worked with several people and talked about libraries.
- 15:25So she is a fan of libraries.
- 15:27It's just, you know, for the show.
- 15:29So I will forgive her and my goal for that.
- 15:34Forgiven.
- 15:36They are forgiven.
- 15:37Uh, and I'm sure they'll want to know that.
- 15:39I'm sure there'll be listening to this podcast.
- 15:42So, you know, I bet they will.
- 15:46Hey, what's Amy Poehler's called?
- 15:48Good, good hang or something.
- 15:50Good hang.
- 15:50Yep.
- 15:51Yeah.
- 15:52Yeah.
- 15:52She'll definitely be, she'll definitely be listening to this.
- 15:55I'll have to submit a clip.
- 15:56I'll maybe send him an email and submit a clip of that.
- 15:59That she's been forgiven.
- 16:03What about you?
- 16:03What, what are, what are your comfort movies and shows?
- 16:08And, um, at this stage, one of my comfort shows is friends.
- 16:13Cause I'm really basic.
- 16:15I don't know.
- 16:17I just love the, I think it's the color palette of the late
- 16:21nineties and early two thousands that I like, like Monica's
- 16:25apartment is really colorful.
- 16:27I don't know.
- 16:27It's just kind of funny.
- 16:29That's kind of like my passive background sort of show.
- 16:34And I do like that.
- 16:35They're 20 minutes, like you said, and just watch one.
- 16:38It resolves.
- 16:39Oh yeah.
- 16:40Yeah.
- 16:40I think that's a good key to a comfort show.
- 16:43I mean, I know everyone has different reasons for comfort
- 16:45shows, but for me, it is a, it's resolved in one I can, you know,
- 16:52don't have to watch another one, but I'm probably going to,
- 16:57I don't feel compelled to.
- 16:58So that's, that's what I think a good comfort show is, but, and
- 17:03friends, friends is a good option.
- 17:05I mean, I, my question to you now that you brought up friends
- 17:08is were, were they on a break?
- 17:11That's the question.
- 17:12Were they on a break?
- 17:14Uh, I think that's done so well because you can kind of
- 17:18see, see both sides of it.
- 17:21Yeah.
- 17:21But I don't know.
- 17:22I'm not a, I'm not a Ross hater.
- 17:25Neither am I.
- 17:26That's, that's my hot take.
- 17:27Cause I don't think a lot of people hate Ross, but I, I
- 17:31just don't think he's bad.
- 17:33No, I, I don't, I don't hate Ross either.
- 17:36Uh, I think Ross would really like our summer library club
- 17:39theme that we'll talk about later.
- 17:41Oh, yes.
- 17:42I think he would really love summer library club this year.
- 17:46Uh, he'd be wanting to visit the libraries and so he would love it.
- 17:52Okay.
- 17:52So now I'll throw this one out at you.
- 17:54Coffee, tea, or chaos?
- 17:57Um, today kind of started with chaos, so I'm going to say not chaos.
- 18:03Uh, I'm a coffee fiend.
- 18:06I can drink coffee anytime.
- 18:08Love it.
- 18:09See, for me, I, I default, I have to choose chaos because I don't drink
- 18:17caffeine several years ago, I gave up caffeine and haven't went back.
- 18:22So I do not drink caffeine.
- 18:24So I cannot have, I mean, I know there's decaf coffee, but what's the point?
- 18:30Uh, cause when I did drink coffee, I was the kind of person who liked
- 18:34my coffee to not taste like coffee.
- 18:37It's like, would you like some coffee to go with your cream and your sugar and
- 18:40your, uh, flavors and all that fun stuff?
- 18:43So, you know, if I'm not drinking it for the caffeine, I just
- 18:47might as well not drink it.
- 18:48So, uh, I have to choose chaos because I live without caffeine.
- 18:54That's what has to get you up and going.
- 18:56Cause chaos, I guess that's the only answer when it comes to that question.
- 19:01Uh, I, I can't do, I can't do caffeine.
- 19:03So I've learned to manage, I've adapted and I'm still here every
- 19:08morning, fine, ready to go for the day.
- 19:10So I don't know how I do it either.
- 19:12People ask me and I don't really have an answer.
- 19:15I just do, I just, now we know it's the chaos.
- 19:21Yes, exactly.
- 19:22Exactly.
- 19:23Let's see what's next.
- 19:25So this is a controversial topic.
- 19:28We talked about, you know, Ross hating and is Ross hated.
- 19:33And so that was, you know, something in the nineties that was
- 19:35controversial, were they on a break?
- 19:37But there's another late nineties, early two thousands controversy
- 19:43that we can, uh, talk about.
- 19:45And that would be team NSYNC or team Backstreet Boys.
- 19:50Oh, which one are you?
- 19:52This is serious.
- 19:54This is very serious.
- 19:57Uh, because I am a, I have strong opinions about one of them.
- 20:03And so, yeah, it is, this is a very controversial topic here.
- 20:09And since our episode does come out on May the 1st, it's going to be May.
- 20:14It's very appropriate for us to talk about this.
- 20:17What's your, what's your answer?
- 20:19Um, I gotta be team Backstreet Boys.
- 20:23Yeah, because I honestly, as you know, now I loved anything creepy
- 20:29and anything scary when I was a kid.
- 20:33And when I saw the everybody backstreets back video where they're like in the
- 20:37house where the, the Casper movie happened and they're all dressed up
- 20:41like different horror characters.
- 20:43I was obsessed with that.
- 20:44So that, that just kind of put me on their team, I think.
- 20:50Okay.
- 20:50Okay.
- 20:51That, that is absolutely fair.
- 20:52So my answer is in line with the title of the podcast, we are on the same page.
- 21:00I am team Backstreet Boys.
- 21:02And I'm probably shocking Tanya right now, because during the planning of this,
- 21:07we talked about maybe doing this and I kept saying NSYNC over and over again,
- 21:12dropping clues, but that was a misnomer.
- 21:14That was me throwing you off.
- 21:16I am team Backstreet Boys, 100%.
- 21:19And I mean, so many of their songs, I just absolutely love.
- 21:26I think about this past year's Superbowl and that moment with everybody, there
- 21:31was a commercial that used the Backstreet Boys song, everybody and the whole world.
- 21:37I saw all these TikToks, all these things about how upset they were.
- 21:41They changed the words to something and it wasn't an NSYNC song.
- 21:45It was a Backstreet Boys song.
- 21:47So was this the karaoke commercial that they did or was this a different one?
- 21:52Okay.
- 21:52I remember this.
- 21:53Yeah.
- 21:54Yes.
- 21:55It was the Backstreet Boys commercial that they did at the Superbowl and
- 21:59everybody got upset about it for some reason.
- 22:02Yeah.
- 22:03Coinbase, Coinbase was the one that people were really upset about because
- 22:07they changed something about it and everyone was singing along.
- 22:10That was, that was the crypto ad.
- 22:13So I'm, I'm team, I'm team Backstreet Boys.
- 22:15You mentioned that you had a karaoke go-to song.
- 22:19Is it, is it a Backstreet Boys song?
- 22:21I mean, I do have a, a song for Backstreet Boys that I do, I do perform.
- 22:27Yeah.
- 22:28Which one is it?
- 22:29It's the one we've been talking about.
- 22:30Everybody.
- 22:31Oh, okay.
- 22:32It's everybody.
- 22:33And you might say that everybody is a tough song to do at karaoke because it is
- 22:38a, I mean, it is a boy band, there's multiple singers, but what I've discovered
- 22:43doing this is I usually have people in the audience singing along with me.
- 22:47So I do have multiple singers.
- 22:50It's just, you know, I focus on one part and then just let the rest happen.
- 22:54So everyone seems to know that song and love that song.
- 22:57So that's, that's my go-to Backstreet Boys song.
- 23:01Yeah.
- 23:02During karaoke.
- 23:02You do that song at karaoke and then all the Backstreet Boys
- 23:05just start singing around you.
- 23:07You, all the parts get filled in.
- 23:10Yeah.
- 23:11I've got my, I got my audience to help with that.
- 23:13So yeah, I'm, I'm team Backstreet Boys and I mean, I know I'm not, we're
- 23:18not throwing shade to NSYNC, you know, but I will say over the past couple of
- 23:24years, Lance Bass has been making me appreciate NSYNC and he's like, cause
- 23:29he does TikToks and all these different things, he's hilarious.
- 23:33And I'm like, I'm over here now.
- 23:34I'm like, okay, now NSYNC, calm down.
- 23:37I haven't seen any of that.
- 23:39Oh, I have to send you some of those.
- 23:40Those are, those are pretty fun.
- 23:41The Lance, Lance is, Lance is pretty funny.
- 23:44So I'm team Backstreet.
- 23:45But everyone's an NSYNC fan the last two weeks of April
- 23:48and on the first day of May.
- 23:49So.
- 23:50I mean, that is fair.
- 23:52That is fair.
- 23:52They do, they do get fans during this time of year.
- 23:56Yeah.
- 23:56I will say that.
- 23:57I've already listened to the song like several times in the last couple of weeks.
- 24:02Just cause you start thinking about how it's going to, it's going to be May.
- 24:06You got to get ready.
- 24:07You got to prep, you got to prepare.
- 24:09So you're, you're going to listen to that song.
- 24:13So we've mentioned a little bit that we're going to talk about the
- 24:18summer and things going on in the summer.
- 24:20So let's talk about, we're thinking about reading this summer.
- 24:26What are we thinking we want to, to happen outside of work this summer?
- 24:30Any, any cool plans?
- 24:31Any things like that?
- 24:33Well, in terms of what we're going to read, I know theme for summer library club.
- 24:39Yes, we can talk about that is unearth a story, right?
- 24:42Lots of dinosaurs, dinosaurs.
- 24:45That's what we handed to earlier about Ross would really love this summer library
- 24:51club theme is cause he's a paleontologist.
- 24:53Yes, he would.
- 24:54Yeah.
- 24:54This was actually your idea, but I'm a huge fan of Jurassic
- 24:58park and I've never read the book.
- 25:00I've seen the movie so many times and the sequels quite a few times, but
- 25:05I've never, never read the original book.
- 25:07So I definitely want to read that this summer.
- 25:09Yeah.
- 25:10And I'm, I'm going to read it.
- 25:11I'm going to read it as well.
- 25:12And we're going to talk about it on, I think it's in July.
- 25:16So that'll be a future episode that we'll talk about Jurassic park.
- 25:20But for me, I didn't watch Jurassic park growing up.
- 25:24Some people will probably want to shame me, but I did not see Jurassic
- 25:28park until maybe about three years ago.
- 25:32Oh, wow.
- 25:32I had never watched it.
- 25:34No, I'd never watched any of them.
- 25:36Didn't, I mean, I just didn't when I was growing up.
- 25:39So I watched them all a couple of years ago and you know, I like them and they're
- 25:43good, but I'm not like a diehard fan or I didn't grow up with them.
- 25:48So, you know, it's, I don't have the nostalgia for it.
- 25:52No, no, I don't.
- 25:54That'll be kind of interesting.
- 25:55Cause you do have nostalgia for it and you're going to be reading the book and
- 25:59I'm just reading it as someone who, you know, is just a very casual fan of them.
- 26:05I think that will be, I think that'll be good.
- 26:07And as far as anything else I'm reading this summer, you know, my goal this year,
- 26:13I had a reading goal and I did one that wasn't number based.
- 26:16I want to read more popular authors.
- 26:18A lot of things I read aren't necessarily like the, on the bestseller list, but I
- 26:22want to kind of read a couple of those guys.
- 26:25So I'm going to try this summer to read some, some more like heavy hitters.
- 26:30Like, you know, you're Michael Conley, you're, you know, Patterson, things like
- 26:36that, Colleen Hoover, I might pick up one of those, uh, you know, I've heard of her.
- 26:42Yeah.
- 26:43And so we'll see, but I'm kind of thinking about doing some popular stuff outside of
- 26:49our Jurassic Park summer library club theme.
- 26:51Right.
- 26:52I feel that because I recently just read the house made book just because of all
- 26:58the stuff that came out recently with like Frieda McFadden and her identity reveal.
- 27:04And so, and I saw the movie and they, they nailed the tone of the movie.
- 27:10So I was like, you know, I'm going to check out the book, see what it's about.
- 27:14Yeah.
- 27:14Um, I mean, that makes sense.
- 27:18I have not read any Frieda McFadden.
- 27:19So she's on the list too.
- 27:20I need to read one of hers this summer.
- 27:23I don't, I don't know which one, so I'll have to pick one of them.
- 27:29From what I understand, once you pick one, people seem to really be into
- 27:33like reading everything she's written.
- 27:35So, uh, it might be a rabbit hole that I end up down.
- 27:39We'll see.
- 27:39It kind of feels like watching reality TV a little bit when I read it.
- 27:45Okay.
- 27:45If that makes sense.
- 27:46So, yeah.
- 27:48So we shall see.
- 27:50And I'm reading the Odyssey because I've never read it.
- 27:53And the movie is coming out this summer.
- 27:55Yes.
- 27:56That's right.
- 27:57That's on my list too.
- 27:58I forgot about that.
- 28:00I don't think I've actually read the Odyssey.
- 28:02I've read, uh, things that are kind of like inspired by, or, you know,
- 28:07retelling, like kind of has the same beats as the Odyssey, but I don't think
- 28:12I've actually read the Odyssey in its entirety, so that'll, that, that should
- 28:17be fun.
- 28:17I mean, I, I, I really love Greek mythology, so I don't know why I haven't.
- 28:22Do I do think that'd be pretty cool.
- 28:24Yeah.
- 28:24So now that we've talked about some of our episodes that are coming up in this
- 28:29summer, let's talk a little bit, let's do a little community spotlight and talk
- 28:33about things going on at the library this summer.
- 28:36We hope to have some people on later on that are involved with some
- 28:42summer library club stuff.
- 28:43But for now, we'll just kind of talk about the kickoffs because we have a lot
- 28:48of kickoff events in the system where, you know, a lot of different locations
- 28:53and they're all, I mean, some of them are similar, but some of them are not.
- 28:57So it's kind of interesting to see like, uh, all these kickoffs.
- 29:00And I know when I was growing up, I probably would have went to a couple
- 29:03of these, uh, just cause they're different.
- 29:07So yeah, there's lots of things to do at each one.
- 29:10So, so let's see, what's the first one here.
- 29:13All right.
- 29:14So the first one I see on the list is, uh, on May the 30th, that is going to be at
- 29:20your main library in downtown Charleston.
- 29:24It's going to be outside on the plaza facing Capitol street.
- 29:28And there's going to be like some lawn games.
- 29:31There's going to be dinosaur sand art.
- 29:33There will be a used book sale and there'll be some art up on the fourth
- 29:38floor because that is the same weekend or timeframe around festival.
- 29:44Yeah.
- 29:45It's part of festival.
- 29:46I think they're involved in getting the art installation.
- 29:50Yes.
- 29:50Up there too.
- 29:51So, yes.
- 29:52And it's happening that same weekend when there'll be other stuff going on downtown.
- 29:56So, uh, the, on the 30th, that's when we'll have the kickoff at, at Maine.
- 30:01There's also going to be quite a few kickoffs on June 1st.
- 30:05One of them is going to be at the Dunbar branch and it looks like they're going to
- 30:09have adopt a dino event that you can do some dinosaur scratch art and a
- 30:15temporary dinosaur tattoos.
- 30:17So all very unearthed the story dinosaur themed over at Dunbar.
- 30:21Oh yeah.
- 30:21And, uh, temporary tattoos, man, you talk about nineties.
- 30:25That's, that's very nineties coded.
- 30:28Uh, I think I would love to have some temporary tattoos.
- 30:32You'd leave Dunbar with a full dino sleeve.
- 30:37Dino sleeve.
- 30:37Yeah.
- 30:38That sounds awesome.
- 30:40I hope somebody does that.
- 30:42I hope somebody can do that.
- 30:45That'd be awesome.
- 30:46It looks like Elk Valley's is the same day on June 1st.
- 30:50It looks like there starts later in the afternoon around 4 PM and they're going
- 30:54to have the bright star theater.
- 30:55They're doing a dino Academy performance.
- 30:58Ooh, that sounds fun.
- 31:00I've, I've seen the bright star theater before.
- 31:02Uh, they're, they're, they're pretty cool.
- 31:04They're a pretty cool group.
- 31:05They're usually at the book festival, I think.
- 31:07Yes.
- 31:07They're usually at the book festival and they've done some summer
- 31:09stuff for us in the past.
- 31:11And, uh, they, they usually get a pretty good turnout.
- 31:14So it's something you definitely want to check out.
- 31:16Yeah.
- 31:17So they'll have that.
- 31:17And also other dino themed activities there as well.
- 31:21Well, and then I see, I see the next one is at the St.
- 31:25Albans branch.
- 31:26That's going to be on the first as well at four o'clock.
- 31:30Uh, there's going to be craft store prizes and we even have some free meal
- 31:37coupons that were donated to the library.
- 31:39And so while supplies last, we will have those to give away.
- 31:43So that should be fun.
- 31:45That's really awesome.
- 31:46Yeah.
- 31:46Uh, we, we reached out to a local place here and they sent us some
- 31:51so we can give out to people.
- 31:52So we're going to do that one.
- 31:54And I think that's the last one or the first.
- 31:56So, I mean, that's, that's quite a few in one day.
- 31:58Yeah.
- 31:59You can have a full day on June 1st doing library events.
- 32:02You could, you absolutely could.
- 32:05And then let's see the next day on the second, we have free that day.
- 32:12First is we have a Riverside from 1030 to one, and they are also going to have
- 32:17the Dino Academy Great Star Theater performance.
- 32:21They will have that there.
- 32:22Uh, it looks like it's just from 11 to 12.
- 32:25And then the rest of that time there'll be other dino related things and stuff
- 32:29for people to do and get signed up for summer reading all of these events.
- 32:33We didn't mention that all of these events will have signups for summer
- 32:36reading, so you can get signed up, get registered and participate in that.
- 32:40And that's for all ages.
- 32:42We do summer reading for all ages.
- 32:44So, and that'll be at all of the events.
- 32:46And then also on the second at two o'clock, there is the kickoff
- 32:52event at the Crosslanes Library.
- 32:54And they are going to have Indy, the dog who never gave up, be there.
- 32:59And I was not here when Indy came to St.
- 33:02Albans, but I have heard about it.
- 33:04Uh, Indy is a precious little dog who has had a difficult, difficult life, but has
- 33:10survived and is just a marvelous, sweet creature.
- 33:16I've seen pictures of Indy and Indy is adorable.
- 33:19Indy is adorable, very brave, has an overcoming spirit, and still, despite
- 33:24all the challenges, has a joy for life.
- 33:27Indy is a dog that I think everyone should want to meet.
- 33:31Unless you don't like dogs, then well, maybe not.
- 33:34But if you, if you do like dogs, I think you should meet Indy.
- 33:39And then the last one that day is at Sissonville at 6 p.m.
- 33:45There will be snacks, crafts, activities, and all those
- 33:48things will be dinosaur themed.
- 33:50And so that's the last one for the second.
- 33:54Then the third, we don't have anything.
- 33:56Well, we have events, but no kickoffs on the third.
- 33:58That's the recovery day.
- 34:00That's the recovery day.
- 34:02And then we have one more.
- 34:04So Glasgow on the fourth, they will have their kickoff and it
- 34:09looks like it will start at 3.30.
- 34:12There will be games, door prizes, and there will be someone there doing a STEM
- 34:17demo, science, technology, engineering, and math, be doing a demo for kids.
- 34:20And there will be free popsicles.
- 34:23So free popsicles sounds good to me, especially June.
- 34:26We're talking June the fourth.
- 34:27That's, that's the perfect popsicle weather or well, popsicle time.
- 34:31Cause it's usually pretty hot in the summer.
- 34:33I will definitely take a popsicle.
- 34:34Got to have popsicles in the summer.
- 34:36Absolutely.
- 34:37And so that's our kickoffs.
- 34:38And we have all sorts of fun things planned for the summer.
- 34:41And, uh, we hope to talk about more of them on our June episode, which
- 34:47hopefully should be out around the same time as these kickoffs are happening.
- 34:51No, the main one will have already passed, but some of these others, they
- 34:55should be happening when we go live with the podcast episode, we'll be talking
- 34:59about more things we'll be doing this summer on that episode.
- 35:03Look forward to that.
- 35:04We always have a good time during the summer.
- 35:06It's busy, it's hectic, but summers at libraries are the place to be.
- 35:11We're the place to be in the summer.
- 35:12And I came in, I started last year after summer library club
- 35:16was kind of already wrapping up.
- 35:18So I'm excited to get to get to be a part of it this year.
- 35:21Oh yeah.
- 35:22Yeah.
- 35:22It's, it's fun.
- 35:23It's a fun time.
- 35:24And it's, it's fun seeing the kids and getting to find that love of reading
- 35:29through the summer and through all the events and things that we do.
- 35:31It's, it's a really special time.
- 35:33We hope, we hope all of our listeners will come out and check out some of these.
- 35:37If you're not local to the Kanawha County area, I encourage you to check out
- 35:42your summer library club at your library.
- 35:44I'm, I'm sure they've got good things going on.
- 35:47Libraries always try to have fun things.
- 35:50So check, check out your local library, no matter where you are.
- 35:53Yes.
- 35:54And so if you're listening to this, you might have found us through a newsletter.
- 35:59You might've found us on social media.
- 36:01Don't know how you got here, but we do want to say that we will have this
- 36:06podcast out on different podcast services.
- 36:09Hope to have it on, you know, Apple, Spotify, YouTube, anywhere
- 36:14you would find a podcast.
- 36:15We hope to have it there.
- 36:17Definitely pay attention to our social media for more information and links
- 36:21and things to how to get to that.
- 36:24So you can subscribe and tune into our podcast, which I mean, I guess
- 36:28we've alluded to this whole time.
- 36:30We haven't really said for sure, but we hope to have these as
- 36:33a monthly episode once a month.
- 36:35It's really easy to stay caught up.
- 36:37Yes.
- 36:37So we can make this a part of the library community and talk about
- 36:41what's going on here every month.
- 36:44Yeah.
- 36:44And we, we hope you have enjoyed listening and we hope that you
- 36:47will come back and check us out.
- 36:50And, you know, we hope to have this thing evolve and we want this to be a
- 36:55podcast that is for the people in the making of this podcast, we kind of
- 36:59really worked with our staff and we did like surveys and get feedback and we
- 37:04want it to reflect the library as a whole, but we also want, you know, patrons to
- 37:08be able to, to feel like they can contribute.
- 37:11So we have, do you want to talk about how they can get ahold of us?
- 37:16Yeah.
- 37:16So like you said, we just want to create a community here where people can feel
- 37:21like they're a part of everything.
- 37:22And you can, we've created an email for the podcast where you can reach out to
- 37:28us and that is podcast at kcpls.org.
- 37:33You can, you can write in, you can, if you have something you want us to talk
- 37:36about, if you have ideas, if you just want to say, you know, I mean, positive feedback.
- 37:43We love positive feedback.
- 37:44You can email there.
- 37:46We hope to maybe later on do some kind of like polls or maybe ask for questions
- 37:51from our listeners and all of that will be done through our email.
- 37:56So that's, that's where you'll, you'll be able to get ahold of us.
- 38:00And once again, that's podcast at kcpls.org.
- 38:06And that's how you will find us.
- 38:08That's how you'll find on the same page, KCPL podcast.

- 38:22And once again, want to thank you for listening in.
- 38:26Yeah.
- 38:26Shout out to anyone who's listening to the very first episode of
- 38:30this, as we get it started.
- 38:32Yeah, definitely.
- 38:33Uh, you, you, hopefully someday you will be able to say that
- 38:37you were here at the beginning.
- 38:39And I will say I was talking to someone about the podcast and they said, Oh, what
- 38:45if you want to, uh, heart radio award and stop, stop, stop, we're not, but guess
- 38:51what, if we do, you listeners will be able to say you were here for the very beginning.
- 38:57I mean, you just won an award a week ago, so I mean, I wouldn't put it past you.
- 39:03It would be us.
- 39:04We would be winning the heart radio award.
- 39:06So, you know, we can dream.
- 39:09We can dream.
- 39:10We'll break the heart in half.
- 39:12That's right.
- 39:16All right.
- 39:16Tune in next month for more library of it.
- 39:19This is on the same page, a KCPL podcast.
- 39:23I'm Evan.
- 39:24And I'm Tanya.
- 39:25Thanks for listening.
- 39:26Thanks.
- 39:26Bye.
