- 2:12on a Sunday night. Well, I know you expect some dull insurance agent
- 2:16to be calling you, Yeah, with a dull insurance matter for you to

- 4:24Johnny Dollar. Expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Home Office
- 4:44Universal Adjustment Bureau Hertford, Connecticut. Following is an account of expenses incurred during
- 4:48my investigation of the Latin Lovely Matter. Expense account items one, two,
- 4:57three, four, and five fifty cents for phone calls early Monday morning,
- 5:00trying to reach Pat McCracken. I am six a dollar taxi fair to the
- 5:03offices of Universal Adjustment. Oh hi, Johnny, top of the morning to
- 5:09you. Yeah, we're the Sam Hill. Have you been all morning?
- 5:11Patty? All morning? You kidding? Look the clock on this desk.
- 5:15That's exactly nine oh two for me. That's the crack of dawn. Now,
- 5:18what's bothering you? Carmela? Carmela joke? Carris, Yeah, only
- 5:25it's hokares. Oh, well, might have known she'd called you direct.
- 5:28I should have warned you, Johnny. You know her, Pat, She's
- 5:30threatened to come down here and camp on my doorstep any minute. Oh can
- 5:34you think of a nicer ornament to have around? If she's anything like she
- 5:38sounds like she is, That's why I should have suggested that Special Investigator Martha
- 5:43Maybury Boulderdale help her other Dale. How could an old battle axe like her
- 5:46and know how to deal with a young, charming, beautiful dancer like Carmela?
- 5:51Dancer? Is that what she's? Yeah? Not very good, but
- 5:56she's just as beautiful and seductive? No, no, no, maybe I
- 6:00better stick hole addy ball day. All right, Pat, quit the kidding
- 6:03and tell me what it's all about. Who's kidding? Where do I find
- 6:05Carmela her address? Oh? You see, you're already emotionally involved with You
- 6:10haven't even met her. Relationship in our business should be entirely objective, Johnny,
- 6:14How can I possibly expect you to look at Carmelo's insurance problem with an
- 6:17unbiased Oh, pad, all he'd have to do is bat those lovely big
- 6:20brown eyes at you a couple of Look. Will you stop baiting me and
- 6:25tell me what this is all about? All right? I got involved with
- 6:29this little Latin lovely as a favorite of the company that issued her the policy?
- 6:31Surely mutual in trust? What kind of a policy retirement pays her fifty
- 6:36thousand when she's forty five? Meantime, if she dies, her beneficiary gets
- 6:41the fifty grand. So what's the matter with him. Eh, Well,
- 6:45like I told you, Johnny, she's a dancer nightclubs, always has a
- 6:47partner, some good young kid who can make up for her shortcomings, only
- 6:51a different partner every month or so. Well, what's that have to do
- 6:56with her insurance? Well, she has the company name her partner as benefit
- 7:00all I see. And if she keeps changing her policies right and by now
- 7:05it has so many riders attached to it, the company's running out of filing
- 7:09space. And what's more important, the cost of servicing this one lousy policy
- 7:13and the time that's been wasted on it. And the last time, well,
- 7:16she's been so insistent you'd think she was planning to die tomorrow. Maybe
- 7:19she is. Why doesn't the company just stall on making some of these changes?
- 7:23They've tried that, So what happened? She's on the phone every day,
- 7:26two or three times a day. Nobody has any piece. That's why
- 7:30they finally turned to me in desperation, and you said you'd have me talk
- 7:33to her. I did not. She asked for you. Why how does
- 7:38she even know about me? Newspapers, some of the radio programs about the
- 7:41cases you've handled, Johnny, you're her idol. You're her dream boy.
- 7:45Oh yeah, sure, but what to do about this? Will you get
- 7:47her to settle with one beneficiary? Get her married something like that, so
- 7:51her policy will stay set for a while. Yeah, married even if you
- 7:56have yeah you uh yeah, oh no you don't not no, no,
- 8:03no, it's a great idea, Johnny. Her address is six to fore
- 8:05East forty seventh Street in New York. Now you look, just remember one
- 8:09thing. Universal Adjustment Bureau will not pay for your defense and the breach of
- 8:13promise you, John, It's all the way or nothing. Yeah. Sure,
- 8:16call me up sometime when you have a case for me, sucker me.
- 8:24That is because of Item seven nineteen forty plain fair an incidentals to New
- 8:28York City taxi from the airport to six two four East forty seventh Street,
- 8:31A nice modern apartment building complete with the uniform dorma miss who caras that's right?
- 8:37I have your name, sir, Johnny Dollar. Oh yes, cook,
- 8:41So if you'll just give me your apartment, I may I see your
- 8:43credentials? Could then? Oh sure, why not? Yeah, take a
- 8:48good look. Seems all right, thank you, sir. Now look she's
- 8:52expecting me, I know. So then what's all this fuzz about it?
- 8:54Will you sit into the lobby please? Oh sure? Now what's the number
- 8:58of her apartment? One moment? Please? She is in, isn't she?
- 9:09Yes, she is. I don't understand I answering the house phone.
- 9:15Yes, certain that she's in, absolutely, sir. Why she doesn't answers
- 9:20her apartment? It's number seven up the stairs, Come on showing it away,
- 9:22Yes, sir, she only came in a few minutes ago, and
- 9:24nobody else has called on her house. Sir. We're all those precautions of
- 9:28yours on her orders. Yes, she seemed to be fearful of something lately,
- 9:33fearful. All right here sir, number seven. Mm hmm, that's
- 9:39funny. Socadres soccadre is Camela. Listen what that sound inside? There must
- 9:52be somebody here, yes, sir, Now, I'm giving to me quick.
- 9:56But unless you have some authority, mister, I have all I need.
- 9:58H Carmela. She's been killed. No, no, she's alive,
- 10:11all right. But that's about all Act two of yours, truly, Johnny
- 10:31Dollar. In a moment. There is a difference, a great big difference
- 10:37in mixed medicated cof cops. There is a difference, a great big difference.
- 10:43Get relieved every single drop. Yes, there is a big difference.
- 10:48And vexed medicated cough drops. The medication makes the difference. Only vixed cough
- 10:52drops are medicated with the exclusive throat soothing ingredients of vixed vapor rub two delicious
- 10:58flavors, fixed regular, and you wild cherry next time your throat fields raw
- 11:03and irritated from costs. Judic Holds remembered the difference, A great big difference
- 11:09in mixed edicated cost cops. The medication makes the difference. Yes, the
- 11:15medication makes the difference. And for a stuffy nose, just one whiff with
- 11:20a vix In hailer and that miserable feeling of a stuffy nose goes in seconds.
- 11:24Use it anywhere, anytime, vix In Hailer, and now act two
- 11:30of yours truly, Johnny Dollar and the Latin Lovely Matter Carmelo Hocare's beautiful Latin
- 11:39American dancer who kept changing the beneficiary of her insurance policy to the point where
- 11:43the company was going crazy, who demanded another change, this time almost desperately.
- 11:48We found her unconscious on the floor of her apartment. Bill the Dorman
- 11:50discovered how her assailment had got in through the service entrance into the kitchen.
- 11:54Sai dalla unless it have run away when heard us at the door, any
- 11:56brandy, anything like that around here building? He has a little bar there
- 11:58in the corner, okay, said, do you know a doctor you can
- 12:01call? I have a list of my desk and love it when I go
- 12:03on down and call him. Isn't this a matter for the police. I'll
- 12:05worry about that. You get a doctor up here. Comela Cometa, come
- 12:20out of here. See if you can drink this? Oh, Johnny,
- 12:24that's right, come on, I'll drink this. That's good. A little
- 12:28more now, come on, no, I'm all heart Now help me to
- 12:35the sofa. You know. Hey, how's that? Thank you? Johnny
- 12:46dog. I badly heard what happened. He struck me. He knocked one
- 12:50the back door. I thought he was really to deliver something, so I
- 12:56opened the door and he struck me before I could. Johnny, it was
- 13:01terrible. Who was he? You know, Darling, I'm still so afraid.
- 13:07Hold me, please in your arms. Carmela, do you know who
- 13:11it was? No? It was then he heard you and Billy at the
- 13:15front door, and you have no idea who it could have been. Well,
- 13:18he was short and dark, and Johnny, the man who has been
- 13:24calling me, first from Mexico and then from here in New York, threatening
- 13:28me. I do not know, Darling. It's threatening about what you have
- 13:33done it once too many, he would say, Now you will be sorry,
- 13:37and he would hang up. Done What ONTs too many? Or too
- 13:39often? Or whatever it meant? You do not know, Johnny? Well,
- 13:43I know, don Well. The insurance company would never carry things this
- 13:46far. The insurance, Johnny, you can't do it for me, can't
- 13:50you, Darling. I only ask them to make a little change, but
- 13:56all they do is delayed delay. No. Look, we have more things
- 14:00to think about now, more important than the insurance. You do not understand.
- 14:05Please, my sweet stars, how can I work on this Armando's.
- 14:09First we find out who attack you and why? Oh, Billy Darling,
- 14:15the doctor says, to be here in fifteen to twenty minutes. No,
- 14:18not the doctor. I love you, Billy, but you're a nice boy.
- 14:22But not the doctor. Why not? Because because I am all right
- 14:26now you're sure about that, Carmela, Yes, yes, I am all
- 14:31right. You know you recovered pretty fast now marks on you? What do
- 14:35you mean? I wonder just how much of a beating you really took,
- 14:39Johnny, my darling, my love. Surely you do not think. I'm
- 14:43not sure what I think. Okay, Billy, call off the doctor until
- 14:48I can find out what's what? Thank you? You do care about me?
- 14:56I love you? Oh yeah sure? And ay boy, you stay
- 15:01here until I get back. Yes, my oanito, where are you going?
- 15:05You know something? Carmela? I wish I knew. I know where
- 15:13I was going all right, to eighteenth Precinct police headquarters. My old friend
- 15:16Randy Singer. If anybody could get me a rundown on Carmela and any other
- 15:20contacts he could. If Carmela's attacker left any finger, Princess Boys would find
- 15:24him cutting through the alley beside the apartment building. Headquarters would only be a
- 15:28couple of blocks away. But all that alley was a mistake. I didn't
- 15:33see the man step out of the doorway behind me, but I did feel
- 15:37that old familiar polk in the smaller my back. No keep walking signor to
- 15:43the next doorway. Now, look, if you'll take that gun out of
- 15:45my bank walk? What is this a hold up? Now keep here.
- 15:52Well, I am Pherrico senior daughter, wellly for you, so what I
- 15:58could hear you from the back stairway of her apartment, So you would help
- 16:02her, Carmela. Maybe no, you will not, because I will kill
- 16:07you. First Act three of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar in a moment,
- 16:23Smoke Kent, smoke Can Smoke Kent with the micrant Ie filter. Remember
- 16:30this, Kent filters best of all the leading filters. So get the mile
- 16:38Kent Sager Red Smoke Kent with the microant eye filter. M h m hm
- 16:52hm m hmmm. Remember this, Kent filters best of all the leading filters.
- 17:06So get the mile Can s Red Smoke Kent. Smoke Kent, Smoke
- 17:12Kent. What a wonderful feeling. Smoke Kent. No. Act three of
- 17:19yours, truly, Johnny Dollar and the Latin lovely matter you hear me,
- 17:33I will kill you. Mind telling me why I will kill you before I
- 17:34let you help that woman ruin my son, your son. You are from
- 17:38the company for the insurance, are you not? That's right to make her
- 17:41the change in the policy, to change what you call the the benefit the
- 17:45beneficiary. Yes, that's what she's asked for. But I will not let
- 17:48you. Well, I haven't said I. Oh look, put away that
- 17:52gun, will you know? Okay? Chief what? But be careful this
- 17:56man is armed. Who do you call it? We see just affording yourt
- 17:59u? No that car no all right now or uneven terms? Just who
- 18:06are you? And what's this all about? Fedderico Gomez, the father of
- 18:10Armando. Who's Amanda Armando? My son? He would be the next fly
- 18:15in the web of the spider of what that woman Carmela who carries it is
- 18:18my boy, my fine son, that she would make her victim like all
- 18:22the others, like oh what other's look? Mister Gome is a dancer,
- 18:25my son, I fine answer, the toast of all Mexico. And she
- 18:29would do with him what she did with the rest charm and make love to
- 18:33them, bring them here to the city to dance with her, unless I
- 18:36stopped or I failed to see anything butt And like the others, my son
- 18:38would fall in love with her with all his heart, with all his soul,
- 18:41with all his mind, I'm sure. But she, oh, of
- 18:45course, she would prove her love for him with all the big insurance benefit
- 18:48you mean not naming those lands and her insurance policy. Oh no, wait
- 18:53a minute, You do not know what fifty thousand of your American dollars can
- 18:56mean to a young man fresh in his what you call corren Is it not
- 19:00true? Well, yeah, it's a lot of doe, the hold up
- 19:03in front of a young fellow. But there's a big difference between that much
- 19:07cash and just a promise of insurance money. The eyes of a young man
- 19:10are easily blinded by this beautiful woman, Amigo. She has blinded so many.
- 19:15They have done with her and given her their money because they loved her.
- 19:18But when she got their money, she was through with them. When
- 19:22they begged her to marry them, she spit on them. She turned them
- 19:23out. Pedro Fernandez, you know of him, No, I'm afraid I
- 19:26don't because of this woman. He killed himself. So it was with him
- 19:30and as the son of my friend. But she will not do this to
- 19:33my son. And you honestly think the mere fact of a big insurance policy.
- 19:37Was it not true? With him? And as with Pedro, with
- 19:40God health, with all the rest. These were young men, and me
- 19:42go like my son, unwise to the world, unwise to a woman like
- 19:47this suicide. I will do anything to keep up from using that insurance to
- 19:52ruin my son, Senor. The more I live in this world are more
- 20:00amazed. I am at some of the things that happen in it, things
- 20:03that are implausible, impossible, but that sometimes do happen. I can only
- 20:10beg of you. All right, Look, mister Gomez, I'm keeping this
- 20:14gun by right said, I have you locked up for poking into my back,
- 20:15for your attack on Carmela. But I where are you staying at the
- 20:21hotel the Glen Arms. I want you to go back there, stay there
- 20:25until you hear from me. You will help me, Senor, if you'll
- 20:29do as I say, Grassi gracious. The scene with Commela back in her
- 20:37apartment was not a pretty one. She not only admitted to having used the
- 20:41insurance, among other things, to further her shaky career at the expense of
- 20:45those young and better dances, but it was quite proud of the broken hearts
- 20:48and broken mind she may have left behind until I tore into her, and
- 20:53believe me, I did. Oh no, you look, if you didn't
- 20:59murder those two young kids, well you might as well have plunged in the
- 21:02knife yourself. I don't know what laws, what legal action may be dragged
- 21:06in to make you pay for what you've done. But there are moral laws
- 21:08too, laws of decency. I'll tell you this, Camila, that from
- 21:11now on, the police of this town and of anywhere else you may go,
- 21:15believe me, they'll be gunning for you. And if anything like this
- 21:18ever happens again, Johnny, please you must believe me. I did not
- 21:22think. I was thinking only about myself. I did not realize it was
- 21:27high time you did your insurance. Oh baby, that's going to be canceled
- 21:32unless you can think of someone far away from your career to leave your money
- 21:34to someone you can't hurt, Johnny, I promised, don't you see,
- 21:40Never before has anyone made me realize what I was doing. I have only
- 21:44had to think. By the time I left her, she was sobbing her
- 21:52heart out, promising that she'd spend the rest of her life making up for
- 21:55the things she'd done. And who knows, maybe well, who knows?
- 22:02Expense account total including incidentals and transportation back to Hartford? Uh, Johnny Dollar,
- 22:08Pat mccrack and Johnny, Oh hi, pad Well, I just got
- 22:12around to finishing up my report and expense account on that Carmelo Hocare's thing last,
- 22:17and just forget the expense account part of it. For the life of
- 22:19me, I don't know how you did it. What are you talking about?
- 22:23The company just sent me a copy of the writer Johnny, the last
- 22:26and final writer on her policy naming the new beneficiary and absolutely irrevocably can ever
- 22:33be changed again? Who did she name? Pat? Some old childhood?
- 22:36Are you kidding you? What you slide? Dog? Hello? Hello?

- 24:07Now Here is our star to tell you about next week's story. Next
- 24:11week, some priceless jewelry, a beautiful girl, and believe me, they
- 24:15add up to trouble. Join us, won't you? Yours truly? Johnny
- 24:18Dollar, Yours truly Johnny Dollars, starring Bob Bailey. Originates in Hollywood and
- 24:26is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone, who also wrote today's story. Heard
- 24:32in our cast were Lucille Meredith, Larry Dobkin, Jimmy Mcallian, and Harry
- 24:34Bartel. Be sure to join us next week, same time and station for
- 24:38another exciting story of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar. This is Dan Coberly
- 24:44speaking, welcome back. While an interesting insurance scheme, I'm much Johnny in
- 25:56terms of not knowing what they can do legally, it does kind of sound
- 26:00like there might be some sort of civil matter, but it's the top of
- 26:04civil matter most people aren't going to want to talk about in court. Kind
- 26:11of a nice twist at the end showing that if Johnny Dollar's fist wants to
- 26:15fine, sometimes is moral outrage. Will though whether I totally buy even Johnny
- 26:21Dollar being able to get through to someone as portrayed in this story, it's
- 26:26still an interesting portrayal. Of course. What's also interesting is the commercial breaks.
- 26:33And we've kind of seen how commercials have there been spaces made for them
- 26:42in the Armed Forces. Radio and television services versions of these shows and those
- 26:51that don't have the public service announcement added tend to be kind of short.
- 26:56And now we get an example for the first time of what listeners were hearing
- 27:03as they listened to commercial radio in the United States, and that was a
- 27:08lot of commercials, and it's a lot more like the experience we have to
- 27:15today. Throughout most of the golden age of radio, if you advertised on
- 27:19radio, you sponsored the whole show. Whether it was regularly gum or camel
- 27:26cigarettes or Johnson's wax, you own the whole program, and most were dedicated
- 27:33to a single product. In fact, May in the nineteen thirties it took
- 27:37Fred Allen to do some convincing to get his sponsors to believe that they could
- 27:42promote two different products of their own on the same program. But by the
- 27:48time you get into the late nineteen fifties, revenue from radio is declining and
- 27:53they're not finding sponsors willing to purchase a whole program. CBS begin selling these
- 28:02four and five smaller advertising spots and they do get some companies who go ahead
- 28:11and purchase the spot. And of course, in many ways this does make
- 28:15sense because as an advertiser, you do have some diminishing returns. If they're
- 28:23hearing the same pitch from you all season long, an audience isn't going to
- 28:29respond to that. I mean, if you continue on multiple seasons, it
- 28:33just kind of becomes something people don't even hear. So this allowed them to
- 28:37get on radio reach those who are still listening to radio and not be responsible
- 28:44for advertising a whole program. And the commercials, of course are different.
- 28:48They're a little bit catch here. There's still some discussion of factoids, but
- 28:56there are many ads within the Golden Age entertainment where certain facts or if you
- 29:03like, claims about a product will be presented. And it's the same fact
- 29:10week after week. Whether it's that more doctors smoke camels than any other brand
- 29:15of cigarette, or that rallies are the cigarette with the coupon on the back,
- 29:21it's essentially the same thing week in and week out. And even though
- 29:26these are recorded commercials, there's a little bit more of a variety in them.
- 29:32So advertising taking a step forward and taking a step onto Yours Truly Johnny
- 29:37Dollar some interesting ads, and certainly we'll hear more as we come across more
