- 0:04Here's your biweekly industry news briefing for January
- 0:076th.
- 0:09The majority of health plan executives say they're
- 0:12focused on growth and have a favorable outlook
- 0:15for 2025.
- 0:16That's according to a new survey from Deloitte.
- 0:19Between August September of last year, Deloitte surveyed
- 0:2240 c suite executives from large health plans
- 0:25and large health systems nationwide
- 0:28with revenues greater than $500,000,000.
- 0:31Do you identify the top trends expected to
- 0:33affect business strategies
- 0:35this year? Among those respondents, 65% said developing
- 0:39growth strategies
- 0:41is
- 0:42their top priority for the year, and 59%
- 0:43have a favorable outlook for the year ahead.
- 0:45A rise in revenues is expected by 69%
- 0:48of respondents, and a rise in profitability
- 0:51is expected by 71%.
- 0:54Overall, large health care companies should be focused
- 0:56on consumer acquisition and retention, meeting the needs
- 0:59of those customers, investing in digital platforms, strengthening
- 1:03cybersecurity,
- 1:04and prioritizing health equity. Insurers specifically should also
- 1:08be prioritizing working more closely with employers on
- 1:11certain health products,
- 1:13expanding alternative and virtual care sites and consumer
- 1:16facing digital tech, and enhancing operational efficiencies.
- 1:2060% of insurance executives expect the adoption of
- 1:23digital technology to accelerate in 2025,
- 1:26while 53%
- 1:27expect that generative AI and other tech like
- 1:30unlimited reality and digital twins
- 1:33will impact organizational strategies.
- 1:35Executives were asked to list the emerging trends
- 1:38they are tracking most heavily,
- 1:40and 58% identified AI and automation first.
- 1:44Many health plans are already using generative AI
- 1:46for claims processing, underwriting, personalized treatment plans, fraud
- 1:50detection, and document extraction.
- 1:53Also among the health plan respondents, 58%
- 1:55expect that recent and upcoming regulatory changes
- 1:58will influence their organization's strategies this year, and
- 2:0263% are already prioritizing
- 2:04compliance strategies
- 2:06to address those challenges.
- 2:08The UnitedHealth Group has been named the world's
- 2:11largest insurer by net premiums written for the
- 2:1310th year in a row. That's according to
- 2:15AM Best annual ranking published this January.
- 2:19The top 10 insurers in the world by
- 2:212023
- 2:22net premiums written. Number 1 is UnitedHealth Group.
- 2:252nd, Centene, and it's Elavance Health. 4th is
- 2:28Kaiser Permanente. 5th is China Life Insurance Company.
- 2:316th is Humana, then State Farm, then Alliance
- 2:35SE. Number 9 is Berkshire Hathaway. And number
- 2:3810 is AXA SA out of France.
- 2:42Well, Elavance Health has completed its acquisition of
- 2:45Indianapolis based Indiana University Health's insurance business.
- 2:49With the closure of the deal that was
- 2:51first announced back in September, IU Health Plans
- 2:53will now operate as part of Anthem BCBS
- 2:56of Indiana.
- 2:57IU Health Plans serves 19,000 Medicare Advantage members
- 3:01across 36 counties
- 3:03and just under 10,000 fully insured commercial group
- 3:05members through employers.
- 3:07The acquisition of IU's health plans is one
- 3:10of several that Elavance has announced or completed
- 3:13in 2024.
- 3:14The company said back in April that it
- 3:16plans to acquire Center's plan for Healthy Living,
- 3:18a New York based Medicaid long term care
- 3:21plan.
- 3:21The company also closed on its acquisition of
- 3:24infusion center and specialty pharmacy operator, Paragon Healthcare.
- 3:28And in October, the company said it intends
- 3:30to purchase Nashville based CareBridge,
- 3:32which is a value based home and community
- 3:34based care provider for patients with chronic and
- 3:37complex needs.
- 3:40Florida Blue is the latest insurer to sue
- 3:43CMS over its Medicare Advantage star ratings for
- 3:462025.
- 3:47In that lawsuit filed in December in a
- 3:49federal district court in Washington, attorneys for Florida
- 3:52Blue argued that CMS did not account for
- 3:54the effects of natural disasters when it calculated
- 3:57the insurer's Medicare Advantage star ratings.
- 4:00Severe flooding in Broward County in April 2023
- 4:03caused a significant drop in rates of office
- 4:05visits and prescription refills
- 4:07for Florida Blues MA plan members according to
- 4:10the insurer.
- 4:11Though Florida governor Ron DeSantis and president Joe
- 4:14Biden declared a state of emergency in areas
- 4:16affected by the flooding, CMS did not grant
- 4:19an 1135
- 4:20waiter, designating a public health emergency for the
- 4:23flooding.
- 4:24In 2019, CMS adopted an extreme circumstances rule
- 4:27to account for the impact of natural disasters
- 4:30and other uncontrollable
- 4:31circumstances
- 4:32that might affect star ratings.
- 4:35If the flooding in Broward had been granted
- 4:37public emergency status, Florida Blue's HMO MA plan
- 4:40would have received a 4 and a half
- 4:42star rating rather than a 3 and a
- 4:44half stars for plan year 2025.
- 4:47According to the payer,
- 4:48its Medicare Part D plan would have received
- 4:50a 3 star rather than a 2 and
- 4:52a half star rating. Florida Blue said it
- 4:54will lose out on tens of 1,000,000 of
- 4:56dollars in bonus payments as a result of
- 4:58those lower ratings, and it is asking the
- 5:00courts to require CMS to recalculate
- 5:03those ratings.
- 5:04Several other insurers have challenged those 2025 ratings
- 5:07in courts, though on different grounds. In December,
- 5:10CMS increased the ratings for several UnitedHealth and
- 5:13Centene plans,
- 5:15and Humana and Elavance have also filed similar
- 5:18challenges.
- 5:19The new California law that went into effect
- 5:22January 1st will prohibit payers from making coverage
- 5:25decisions based solely on artificial intelligence
- 5:28algorithms.
- 5:28Under that new law, any denial, delay, or
- 5:31modification of care based on medical necessity
- 5:34must be reviewed and decided by a licensed
- 5:36physician or qualified health care provider with expertise
- 5:40in the specific clinical issues at hand.
- 5:43California senator Josh Becker, the bill's sponsor, said
- 5:46that AI has immense potential to enhance health
- 5:49care delivery, but it should never replace the
- 5:51expertise and judgment of physicians.
- 5:53An algorithm cannot fully understand a patient's unique
- 5:55medical history or needs, and its misuse can
- 5:58lead to devastating consequences.
- 6:01And finally, a former chief human resources officer
- 6:04at Elevance Health, Troy Hennigan,
- 6:07has filed a lawsuit against the company in
- 6:09a georgia federal court alleging age
- 6:12discrimination after his termination
- 6:14in June of last year. The lawsuit claims
- 6:17that mister Hannigan, who is 62,
- 6:19was unlawfully replaced as the CHRO at Carillon
- 6:23by a younger individual, and he alleges that
- 6:25his termination violated the age discrimination in employment
- 6:28act. Elevance denied those allegations in an October
- 6:31legal response,
- 6:32asserting that mister Hennigan's termination was based on
- 6:35legitimate business decisions unrelated to his age. Mister
- 6:39Hennigan had been with elevance since 2019. According
- 6:42to the September complaint, his supervisor informed him
- 6:45in February of 2024
- 6:47that the company wanted to go in another
- 6:49direction and hire a younger person for his
- 6:51role, describing the decision as a win win
- 6:54because people assumed he wanted to retire.
- 6:57Mister Hennigan resisted this alleged narrative, proposing to
- 7:00remain through the end of the year, though
- 7:02that proposal was rejected.
- 7:04He claims that his departure was falsely framed
- 7:07as a retirement in company communications,
- 7:09and this position was ultimately filled by someone
- 7:12under the age of 43.
- 7:14In its response, elevance denied any discriminatory statements
- 7:17attributed to mister Hennigan's supervisor, such as his
- 7:20desire to hire a younger person. And the
- 7:22company is arguing that he agreed to describe
- 7:25his his departure as a retirement and asserts
- 7:27that it acted in good faith to comply
- 7:29with anti discrimination laws.
