- 0:06Hello, what's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:10Yo, Doctor Jacobs is dead. Welcome to What's your least
- 0:14favorite scary Movie? The podcast where we talk about
- 0:16the goods, about the ugly and the absurd in all of our
- 0:20favorite. And least favorite?
- 0:22Scary movies. Because we believe every horror
- 0:24movie rightfully has its fan base.
- 0:25Even if we don't always get it. My name is Travis, my name is
- 0:28Jesse, and welcome back to our monthly bonus series.
- 0:31We Are Alive, uncut and mostly undrawn.
- 0:34That's right, we are doing To Be or Not To Be the series where we
- 0:39look at free streaming services and find some maybe hidden gems
- 0:44we've never seen. So this month it was Travis's
- 0:47pick. That's right, and apparently I
- 0:49did not know it from the title, but it became quickly evident.
- 0:52Apparently Travis decided to right the wrong that we had no
- 0:55Valentine's movies. Yeah.
- 0:56So yeah, I this was the opportunity to just put one in
- 1:01the schedule for this month. So I took it.
- 1:03And we're talking about X-ray, also known as hospital massacre
- 1:07today, so. I prefer X-ray.
- 1:10I don't know why you. Do see you like, I feel like the
- 1:13hospital massacre kind of keeps the running tradition that we
- 1:16have on tubies where we cover a bunch of like the blank massacre
- 1:19movies. That is true.
- 1:20So I think this is keeping the spirit of that going.
- 1:23And also, we're getting a Valentine's Day movie, so we're
- 1:25going to get into that. And this is a tubie movie.
- 1:28And I guess you could argue that Harry ended up, you know, being
- 1:31a doctor intern. He's a successful man.
- 1:35Oh, he is a. Successful, man.
- 1:37Wow. Yeah.
- 1:37That's like, oh God, that that's a movie that we have to do
- 1:42eventually. Yeah, we've never covered it.
- 1:44It was an escape room movie and that was that was the movie
- 1:50description on TV. It said a successful man and his
- 1:53friends. I I actually think that might
- 1:55have been the very first movie we ever watched on TV.
- 1:58It might be. I think so, but that's not what
- 2:01we're talking about. We're not.
- 2:02We're talking about X-ray, also known as hospital massacre.
- 2:05So we're going to get into it. OK.
- 2:07I guess we don't do announcements or anything since.
- 2:09This isn't bonus. Oh, Dang.
- 2:11OK, I'm going to go right into it then.
- 2:12OK, All right, so X-ray released October 16th, 1981.
- 2:18We watched it on Tubi, and if you want to watch it, you have
- 2:21to stream it. You cannot rent this movie.
- 2:24This is a this is a rare instance where no rental
- 2:27options, but streaming options are plenty.
- 2:29OK, you can stream it on Prime to be Fubo, TVMGM Plus or Philo
- 2:35OK. Written by Mar BIM who did the
- 2:39screenplay and Boaz Davidson who did the story who and also
- 2:43directed at the movie. Music by Arlen Aubur and special
- 2:47effects make up by Joe Quinlevan, starring Barbie
- 2:51Benton as Susan, Jeremy Charles Lucia as Harry, John Von Ness as
- 2:56Jack, John Warner Williams as Doctor Saxon, and Don Greenough
- 3:02as the Doctor. All right, time for your
- 3:05favorite game on the show, budget or budgeted?
- 3:11I think it's bug Ted. OK.
- 3:13But I think it's, I think it's a decent bug, Ted.
- 3:16There's. Quite a few things in this.
- 3:18They did. I don't have any numbers, like
- 3:20no numbers at all for this thing.
- 3:21So, but yeah, I mean, like it, it looks decent.
- 3:25I I would say bug Ted, but I would say like they had enough
- 3:29of a bug Ted to make a decent product here.
- 3:31Yeah. So, yeah, I do have an IMDb
- 3:34score, though. It's a perfect five out of 10.
- 3:36Wow. Right down the middle.
- 3:38Interesting. Yeah.
- 3:39Well, that actually kind of like rings through to what I've seen
- 3:41online. I've seen a lot of split reviews
- 3:43on this movie right here. Interesting.
- 3:45Yeah. So I have a theme for 1981
- 3:47movies and the theme is you upset me in the past and now you
- 3:51must die. My name is Amy Gorman Toya.
- 3:56Yeah. I think I kind of got that a
- 3:57little bit from that thing. So right out the gate, here's
- 4:01another parallel Valentine's Day movie, My Buddy Valentine.
- 4:04OK, that released February 11th, 1980.
- 4:07One 2.3 million budget. Now we do know that the 3D
- 4:10version also has a hospital massacre.
- 4:13It does, yeah. Does the original.
- 4:16I don't remember God, like see, that's a movie.
- 4:19I don't think I ever finished it.
- 4:20I I rented it from old school Netflix back in the day.
- 4:23Well. Like when they would send DVDs.
- 4:25Out. Yeah, I got the DVD of it.
- 4:26I went back to my bedroom and I put it on and I don't remember
- 4:31finishing it. And it wasn't that I hated it.
- 4:33I just. I don't remember what happened.
- 4:35I got sidetracked. Yeah, something like that.
- 4:38But that was almost one of my other themes here was like
- 4:42hospital horror movies because there were a few of them there,
- 4:45but I couldn't quite find 3 that I knew for sure were hospital
- 4:49movies. No, yeah, it's OK.
- 4:51I like the one. I still ended up getting here.
- 4:53But My Bloody Valentine had a 2.3 million budget, 5.7 million
- 4:58gross, 6.3 IMDb score. OK movie #2 The Burning.
- 5:06That was another hospital, one that.
- 5:08I had a. Brief hospital scene, but still
- 5:10there's a scary moment where he grabs the dude's the nurse's
- 5:13wrist and the guy goes. I also feel like the theme of
- 5:18these movies could be I did something super traumatic as a
- 5:23child and remarkably turned out surprisingly well adjusted.
- 5:30Yeah, you know actually well that would kind of ruin the next
- 5:34one that I have close. We got we got a lot of running
- 5:39themes here in 1981. There's a lot of blending
- 5:41together films here. So The Burning release May 8th
- 5:4581 Budget of 1.5 million, gross of 707,000 IMDb 6.2 and the
- 5:52final movie The Prowler. Oh yeah.
- 5:55Yeah, 'cause that happened, like she turned down his engagement
- 5:59or like, broke up with him. Oh yeah.
- 6:00It was a dear John letter where he was overseas at war.
- 6:03Yeah. So the Prowler came out June
- 6:0526th, 81 budget of less than 1,000,000.
- 6:09They didn't have a number. It was just like, it was less
- 6:11than a million. Yeah, well, we know it was a
- 6:14budget of 1,000,000, a gross of less than a million.
- 6:17IMDb score 5.9. OK, yeah.
- 6:20And The Burning and the Prowler, those are movies that we have
- 6:23covered in the past and we have the 3D version of my buddy
- 6:25Valentine cover as well. So, you know, if you want to
- 6:28listen to our thoughts on those 3 movies, do it.
- 6:31Well, kind of those 3 movies. Yeah.
- 6:32Yeah, it's there. All right, so I have tag lines.
- 6:35We have quite a few here. There were two that were on the
- 6:37poster. The first one you have nothing
- 6:40to fear until they operate. That hit so true because I've
- 6:47got surgery coming up later this month and I've been fine about
- 6:50it being scheduled and then we went in for my pre up
- 6:52appointment this week and all of a sudden it was like my heart
- 6:55was racing and I was sweaty and shaking.
- 6:57Didn't help that they also like like, oh, and by the way, we're
- 7:00taking your bullet too. Yeah, they.
- 7:01Didn't warn me. I didn't even no they planned to
- 7:04take my blood and they didn't tell me that they were going to
- 7:06take my blood and that's just mean.
- 7:07Yeah, you know, actually this movie kind of hit at the right
- 7:09time right here because like, yeah, you're, you're connecting
- 7:12a lot of pieces. Oh, I was going to talk about
- 7:14that. OK, good.
- 7:16OK, so the second tagline is the movie will scare the life out of
- 7:20you. That's.
- 7:22Pretty clever. Yeah, it's not too bad.
- 7:24It's not too bad. Yeah.
- 7:25So the others, there's no recovery at dot dot dot hospital
- 7:30massacre. That's not bad for like a
- 7:35tagline like at the end of a trailer.
- 7:37Strong, It fizzled out at. The end.
- 7:40OK, the checkup. That became a nightmare.
- 7:45That's just the plot. That is the plot, yeah.
- 7:48It's no secret that some hospitals are not safe.
- 7:53OK, but what's the tagline? Hey, I know it's just speaking
- 7:55truth here. I just speak at the truth.
- 7:58OK, so I don't have any fun facts because this is a 2 year
- 8:01not to be in. We don't do that shit here.
- 8:03But I can't explain why I picked this one and I think we actually
- 8:06already covered it. I just I wanted a Valentine's
- 8:09Day movie for the show so I did my researching and you know,
- 8:13there's really not a lot of Valentine's Day horror movies
- 8:16out there. Surprisingly.
- 8:17It's like a holiday I feel is right for a lot of people to go
- 8:21crazy with, but it's just not really like.
- 8:24There are so many revenge stories out there, and it's so
- 8:26easy to have a Valentine's revenge story.
- 8:28And there were, I also was like, OK, if I can't find anything on
- 8:32Valentine's Day, I'll always try and find a romance horror.
- 8:35And I almost had one. But ultimately I was like, let's
- 8:38go through Valentine's Day. Even though this is like, this
- 8:42is a movie that takes place on Valentine's Day, but it's just
- 8:46like a setting, you know, it's not like, it's kind of like,
- 8:50yes, this is a, a Valentine's Day movie, kind of like Die Hard
- 8:52is a Christmas movie. Like it all takes place at the
- 8:54holiday. But, you know, like I, I
- 8:57consider them both to be the holiday movies that they are
- 9:00reported to be. I just feel like the Die Hard
- 9:03Christmas movie, like it adds in a lot of extra people 'cause
- 9:07they're there for the Christmas party.
- 9:08That is true. That is true.
- 9:10I mean, yeah, they could have made it something else, but it's
- 9:12also why John Mcclane like made the trip across the country.
- 9:15I I just think that Christmas is essential to.
- 9:17The plot, I guess true with this movie also is like it started
- 9:21with a rejected Valentine. Yeah.
- 9:23So I, you know, I guess it does kind of play into the
- 9:25Valentine's Day thing. So yeah, that's why I got this
- 9:28one here. And this one has actually been
- 9:29on my radar for a while and I have had like an interest in it.
- 9:33So I'm glad that we finally watched it.
- 9:35So that's it for that. Let's get into our discussion of
- 9:39it. The good, bad, unclean, absurd.
- 9:40What did you like about it? Oh I loved this.
- 9:43I'm glad that you liked it. I didn't know.
- 9:45I was like, I was worried that you're going to be like, oh,
- 9:48here's Travis with another one of his sleazy 80s movies, you
- 9:51know? I I thought this was such a good
- 9:53movie. It had so many good red herrings
- 9:56that like, we were legitimately sitting there, like talking
- 9:59about possibilities with each other.
- 10:00It doesn't help that we've been on a trader's binge.
- 10:02Like so we were always doing like, who's the murderer?
- 10:05Who's a traitor? Well, whenever I spoke up to
- 10:07you, because, like, I had just made that connection in my head,
- 10:09I was like, the guy's name is Harry.
- 10:11The kid's name was Harold. That's got to be him, right?
- 10:13Yes. But they also like they did such
- 10:15a good job saying some of the other doctors like had first
- 10:18initials 8. See, I didn't notice those
- 10:19things. That was a good observation on
- 10:21your part. There was a patient file that
- 10:23the last name was Harold. Yeah.
- 10:25Like, there were a lot of really good red herrings, and there
- 10:29were a lot of really good, like, lingering shots that were just
- 10:33scary. And there were just like some
- 10:36really fun things they did with the other background characters.
- 10:39Like there's the scene where Susan's running around, she's
- 10:44just gotten the head in the box and she runs into a room and
- 10:47there's three men in traction and they're all kind of like
- 10:50banging their legs and arms together.
- 10:52And it makes me think of like, you know, like movies where you
- 10:56see like skeleton or something down in a dungeon or like.
- 10:58Oh my God, yeah. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
- 11:01when they're singing and the guy down in the Yeah cellar is like.
- 11:05I was thinking of like marionettes.
- 11:06Yeah, and also the the three old ladies that she's sharing the
- 11:10room with, I said. They reminded me of the Fates
- 11:13from Hercules and they actually like.
- 11:15Saved the day. Yeah, that.
- 11:17I did not expect that at all. I was like what the fuck?
- 11:21Yeah, I thought that this was just like a fun running gag they
- 11:23had, and they were actually integral to the plot.
- 11:26Yeah, one of the things I was reading about this is the guy
- 11:29that made this movie is more known for comedies.
- 11:32So yeah, this was like his foray into a different genre here,
- 11:38which I think is like the old ways kind of play a big part of
- 11:41like the comedic things because yeah, yeah.
- 11:43They they kind of have like, mostly comedic, A comedic
- 11:46presence until, I mean, even the end, like when they save the
- 11:49day, it's kind of like a comedic thing.
- 11:50And I'm like, are you Doctor Jacobs?
- 11:52Yeah. Like, I don't know, it's weird.
- 11:56Yeah. So I just overall I had, I had a
- 11:59real fun time with it. Cool, alright, I'm happy to hear
- 12:01that. I like this movie a lot too,
- 12:03like I was. I was put off a little bit
- 12:06because like whenever I was talking about mixed reviews
- 12:08before, a lot of people said it was really slow and I was
- 12:11worried about that. But man, like actually this
- 12:13movie kind of gets going like right out the gate.
- 12:15Like there's a lot like I we get the opening, like the little
- 12:19back story with the kid and like, you know, that's OK.
- 12:22But like the doctor immediately starts going to fucking town on
- 12:26people. And I got to say that doctor is
- 12:29actually creepy. I didn't think he was going to
- 12:32be creepy but like that scene and when?
- 12:35Honestly an effective disguise too because like they had the
- 12:39eyebrows covered. Everything covered except for
- 12:41the eyes. Well, OK, I'll talk about that
- 12:42in a second. OK.
- 12:43But like that scene, especially that like stuck like with me the
- 12:47most was that scene where she's in the hallway.
- 12:49She's hiding behind the curtain, and he stops there and he's just
- 12:52breathing so heavily, and he's just like, slowly walking.
- 12:55And he's just, like, the music in this movie, like, did a
- 12:58really good job of making it creepy.
- 13:00The heavy breathing that he does was very unsettling.
- 13:03The Doctor, like, the portrayal was just, like, unhinged and it
- 13:07was really unsettling. And that like, that's I think
- 13:11that deserves a lot of credit because, I mean, like, yeah,
- 13:15like an effective slasher villain, for sure.
- 13:18I also liked that we have two different types of horror in
- 13:21this movie. We had the horror of a killer on
- 13:23the loose in the hospital. We also have like the horror of
- 13:28Susan's character. Like, she is like, these doctors
- 13:32are like, they're they don't want to tell her there's
- 13:34something wrong with her and she's just being strung along
- 13:37this entire movie. And like, that is a terrifying
- 13:40thing of like, there's something wrong with me, terribly wrong
- 13:42with me. And I'm not getting any answers.
- 13:45Nobody's telling me anything. And like, that was like its own,
- 13:49like, that could have been its own horror movie on its own,
- 13:52that little plot. But like, I I liked having both
- 13:55of those there because it just, it kept the tension throughout
- 13:58the movie The entire time because you don't know what's
- 14:01happening there. You're guessing the entire time.
- 14:02And you're also trying to figure out who the doctor is.
- 14:05And it just did a really good job with all that stuff.
- 14:08And yeah, like the kills are good.
- 14:12Like there's a decent body count.
- 14:15I don't know, Like, I, I really enjoyed this movie.
- 14:17I thought it was really good. All right, bad stuff.
- 14:22So when did Harry decide to do this?
- 14:28Because she reveals that she is only doing this checkup because
- 14:35she got a promotion and her new insurance required a checkup.
- 14:38Yeah. So it doesn't seem like that's
- 14:42the type of thing he could have. Like, it's it doesn't seem like
- 14:45he went to medical school. No.
- 14:47Got placed in a residency also orchestrated for her to get a
- 14:54promotion with insurance that is covered at his hospital and plan
- 14:59for her to do a checkup and come back from the checkup on the
- 15:0319th. Which 19th?
- 15:05Whatever anniversary of when he murdered her middle school
- 15:10boyfriend that was. Her brother.
- 15:14Was it? Yeah, because she is.
- 15:17It doesn't seem like it was a brother situation.
- 15:20When I was reading something, I think it's stated brother, OK.
- 15:23Yeah, I did not get that. OK either way it like it was it
- 15:32just he went on and lived his own life and then snapped when
- 15:37he saw her name on their patient.
- 15:39List I think this. Is that even her name that she
- 15:43had when she was a child because she's married and divorced?
- 15:46Did she change back to her maiden?
- 15:47You know what I mean? Like I've got a lot of
- 15:49questions. Well, if I had a.
- 15:51Crime of opportunity. That's what I was going to say.
- 15:53Like, I, I feel like that's the case here.
- 15:54Like I think this guy happened to be working at the hospital.
- 15:57She came in for a check up. He stumbled across her record.
- 16:00Maybe he saw her that day when she came for the check up.
- 16:02And that's when he, like, you know, decided to like scheme a
- 16:06plan to like, OK, when she comes back for the results, that's
- 16:08when I'm going to get her. It just happened to be on
- 16:11Valentine's Day, which made it even more perfect.
- 16:13But coincidence happened all the time.
- 16:16It's so. Implausible.
- 16:17It's implausible, but this is a movie, you know, like this is a
- 16:21movie. We're we're just, this is an
- 16:23interesting sequence of events that's happening here.
- 16:26That's why we want to see it. And I agree, and I generally
- 16:32hold space for suspending my disbelief.
- 16:36So there's a lot. That's a lot of things that
- 16:38lined up perfectly. It is.
- 16:41Yeah, it is. It's a lot, man.
- 16:46I God, what was bad for me here they they had a misdirect with
- 16:58the doctor because like I like they had somebody else play the
- 17:02doctor. So like whenever they had Harry
- 17:05under, there was a completely different like person, but they
- 17:08did a decent enough job having him look consistent.
- 17:11But when you think about it, Harry and the killer, the doctor
- 17:16killer have completely different body frames, body types.
- 17:18The guy that was playing the killer was like really strong,
- 17:21like scrawny. Like he was like he was like a a
- 17:24lanky ish kind of guy. Like he wasn't tall, but he was
- 17:27just very slim all around. And Harry was like one of those
- 17:31guys that's like he's just a little bit more stout.
- 17:37Yeah. And it just didn't match at all.
- 17:41Like I like you mentioned that it was that like you thought it
- 17:45maybe was that one nurse that or the other doctor that was there
- 17:50that was kind of like helping out a.
- 17:51Lot Doctor Saxon because it looks like his facial features
- 17:54almost. No, that's what I thought for a
- 17:55minute. Oh, well, you also mentioned
- 17:56another guy too, because he had like, AH for his on his batch.
- 17:59That guy. Yeah.
- 18:00Like I thought maybe it could be that guy because I started
- 18:02looking at his facial features and they kind of look similar,
- 18:05but I don't know, like I guess like if you're going to do that,
- 18:10like have it be the guy. I I think it's kind of similar
- 18:13to like, you know, with the Ghostface and Scream where they
- 18:16just have the, the actors randomly doing those parts and
- 18:21then they also stuntmen. I'm OK with that because like I
- 18:24feel like Ghostface is its own thing.
- 18:27But in this instance here, like see, Ghostface is also 100%
- 18:31hidden. It's more plausible, like more
- 18:33plausible deniability for that type of thing.
- 18:34This guy right here, like he's got the mask on and he's got the
- 18:38the head thing on. I don't like know what you call
- 18:42that but like. Surgical Cap.
- 18:45Yeah. And that, like there's still
- 18:49some very easily identifiable features there.
- 18:54And it just didn't add up whenever I saw the reveal that
- 18:56it was here. Like I can kind of see it
- 18:59whenever he puts that stuff on. But really, like, that's not the
- 19:01guy. Yeah, it was.
- 19:03It was just a little bit different.
- 19:05I don't really have much else bad to say about this movie,
- 19:07though. OK, all right.
- 19:09Ugly. OK, so the lack of patient
- 19:13rights, there's a huge problem for me.
- 19:16That scene with the exam, I get it.
- 19:18They were trying to do 1980s sleeves.
- 19:20Like we've got to have the gratuitous nudity, but.
- 19:23She was also a Playboy Bunny. Yeah, but it, this is still such
- 19:28a vulnerable thing that a lot of people do experience,
- 19:33unfortunately, if they've got like untrustworthy physicians
- 19:36that they work with. And it's like it's horrible.
- 19:40Even if the exam is kosher, which this one absolutely was
- 19:46not, you know, and then she doesn't have the option of
- 19:49signing out AMA, which she absolutely wants to.
- 19:51They're not telling her what's going on with the tests.
- 19:53They're not telling her the purpose of the tests.
- 19:55It like just the whole thing and you know, like you were saying,
- 20:00this is kind of good timing for immersion for me because there's
- 20:06like the health anxiety, the medical anxiety that's very,
- 20:09very real. Like in terms of like, OK, got
- 20:13to go to the doctor and got to hope everything's OK, but what
- 20:16if it isn't? And then like things start going
- 20:18haywire. That's got to be.
- 20:21Like a nightmare situation and, and it clearly does become a
- 20:25nightmare situation. So I think especially that whole
- 20:27thing with the exam is icky on several different levels.
- 20:32Yeah, I mean, her overall treatment at the hospital was
- 20:35pretty terrible. Like, it's insane.
- 20:38Like they're holding her against her will.
- 20:40Like they're basically kidnapping her.
- 20:42Yeah. Like it's it's they should go to
- 20:46jail for one of the shit that they do in this movie then.
- 20:50Well OK, I agree with you on that.
- 20:52I also have the the drunk patient dripping ketchup on her
- 20:57shoe. She just doesn't react.
- 20:59I know she doesn't even move her foot.
- 21:02Why? She's just like huh, ketchup is
- 21:04on my foot now. Oh well.
- 21:07Like it's like the whole time I and that's so it's too much
- 21:12ketchup on a hamburger. I mean, also, that's like way
- 21:15too fucking liquid. Like that.
- 21:17That that was just he like when he got the ketchup on that
- 21:22burger. He it was the point of the
- 21:25bottle where I was like, yeah. And it was just like weird gross
- 21:29juices coming out instead. And that's what it was.
- 21:32And it dripped all over. It just disgusted me.
- 21:35That scene is gross. Also that guy in general is just
- 21:38really ugly, like he was like constantly forcing himself on
- 21:42women and like spying on them too and shit like that.
- 21:46Like that guy was really a fucking pest.
- 21:49Piece of shit. He looks like one too, like the
- 21:53actor like you know, you might get typecast my guy, cuz you you
- 21:58got that look of value it. Looks like a real life creep
- 22:01too. All right, absurd.
- 22:05There's a few, obviously the part of the beginning where the
- 22:09the environmental services staff finds Doctor Jacobs dead and
- 22:15finds the doctor and is like yo, Doctor Jacobs is dead.
- 22:19That's the janitor, by the way. Yeah, Environmental Services.
- 22:22OK, I thought you were talking about like the hazmat dudes.
- 22:25No, no, no. Yeah, so.
- 22:28That. Is just such a funny way to
- 22:31announce you found a murderer. That's how I would say it,
- 22:33'cause I, I say like, yo a while like that, yo, that person's
- 22:37dead. Absolutely could could picture
- 22:39you saying that, but it just and that was within the first like
- 22:4310 minutes of the movie, so I was sold right away from.
- 22:46That that was really funny. There's also 'cause there's at
- 22:48one point where Susie, not to be confused with Susan, Susie the
- 22:51medical transcriptionist, is writing up the notes about some
- 22:55of the lab work. And it appears as though, and
- 22:58maybe I'm misreading the scene, maybe they did no research on
- 23:02hospital work. But she takes the the the
- 23:07collection of test tubes that there are, finds the one labeled
- 23:10for Susan Jeremy, and holds it up to the light as though she's
- 23:14going to assess the results of this blood draw visually.
- 23:20Yeah, maybe that was what it was like in 81, you know, medical
- 23:25science back then. I mean, it explains a lot of
- 23:28what's going on in this hospital.
- 23:30How many red blood cells can I see in this?
- 23:32Yeah, 1230. Shit, I got started.
- 23:34Over I lost count. That'd be so fucking painful.
- 23:39So yeah, the yeah. OK, those.
- 23:42Are those are just two, two out of probably many that we'll talk
- 23:46about as we go through? OK, so my upstairs right out the
- 23:49gate, the first thing I noticed was they I had read that they
- 23:54shot this at an actual abandoned hospital and it looked to me
- 23:58like they made the signs on the doors.
- 24:01They just like had tape they taped them like it was just like
- 24:04a little strands of tape that they made that like spelled out
- 24:07the stuff like fire exit and stuff like that.
- 24:10So I thought that that looked really funny.
- 24:12But most importantly, the amount of people that willingly wonder
- 24:17the 9th floor while it's being fumigated without any protective
- 24:21materials and they have no issues.
- 24:23And they are doctors. They know that this is not good
- 24:26for you, but they don't care. Well.
- 24:28And they, the doctors that are being called up there especially
- 24:32like they work in the building. Thing like it's got a there was
- 24:35a memo sent surely like I. Don't know if you can just
- 24:37fumigate a single floor like that.
- 24:39I don't know, I think. That's how that.
- 24:40Works. I don't know, Yeah, I don't
- 24:42think, yeah, I don't think that's how that works.
- 24:44But yeah, I was just like, how are people just chill with this?
- 24:50And this is just kind of like, OK.
- 24:53Can I add one more? Sure.
- 24:55Absurd when Harry and Susan go in to break into Doctor Jacob's
- 25:00file and somebody opens the door and they, Oh yeah, hide behind a
- 25:06wire shelf. Yeah, yeah.
- 25:07A wire shelf which notoriously all kinds of slats and gaps and
- 25:13openings and. To be fair that the killer did
- 25:16not. Actually, it wasn't the killer
- 25:18because he was with Harry. That person did not come all the
- 25:21way inside the door. Yeah, we don't.
- 25:24Actually know who came in? I wrote killer peeks in because.
- 25:28That's what, yeah. That's what I would assume.
- 25:29But that was that was a good Mr. Wreck right there because, you
- 25:31know, you think it's the killer, but yeah, it's just somebody
- 25:34else interesting. Yeah.
- 25:37That's a good, you know, again, I think that's a credit to the
- 25:39writing right there. That was a pretty good moment
- 25:40right there to Mr. Wreck. That it wasn't Harry.
- 25:43Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:45OK. Well, let's rate it then.
- 25:47So I think I would give this a nine I I had a fantastic time
- 25:51with this. I think the tension was good the
- 25:53whole time and the Mr. X were successful.
- 25:56Cool. I'm going to give it an 8 1/2.
- 25:58I like this movie a lot. Yeah, like it.
- 26:00It like what generally unsettled me, and it kept me entertained
- 26:03the entire way. Like, I don't think this movie
- 26:05is really slow at all. Like it.
- 26:06It was pretty good. All right, cool.
- 26:08Let's get into it. 8.75 starting average all.
- 26:11Right. We start off at Susan's house
- 26:141961. We got Susan and David playing
- 26:17with a model train and they're surrounded by a bunch of paper
- 26:21hearts. We see a little boy peeking in
- 26:25and he runs to the front door, leaves a card, rings doorbell,
- 26:29runs away, and Susan and David go get it.
- 26:32They bring it inside and realize she got a Valentine from Harold.
- 26:40I crumble this up, throw it down.
- 26:42It's. Just watching from outside and
- 26:44then he's like Ralphie, That's the moment that his heart, he
- 26:47can pinpoint it. He can see the exact moment his
- 26:50heart. Coincidentally, another
- 26:53Valentine's Day. Then if this was not ATV
- 26:57episode, if this was like a normal weekly episode, I would
- 27:00request a send up of. That.
- 27:03For the cover art. Oh, God, yeah, I can make it.
- 27:06I can. I'll just throw like a little
- 27:09thing of Ralphie in there. Ralphie.
- 27:10But put young Harold's face on. It OK, So yeah, like, that
- 27:16upsets him. So Susan goes to the kitchen.
- 27:20She gets a knife, and this looks sinister, but she's cutting her
- 27:24birthday cake. It's a Valentine's Day cake, as
- 27:29people famously get. I realize that I'm asking the
- 27:33absolute wrong person this question, but is this the best
- 27:37way to be having a cake? With a big knife, yeah.
- 27:43Yeah, I knew you were the wrong person to be having this.
- 27:45Conversation. No that I have used that knife
- 27:48to cut cake before. That knife, a knife that size
- 27:51and shape, is meant for murder only.
- 27:54Then why is it always in the kitchen?
- 27:56We don't have a knife like that, so I can't answer that.
- 27:59Actually, we do. No we don't.
- 28:01Yes we do. No, we don't.
- 28:03It's close. We absolutely do not.
- 28:07We got a close enough knife. We might have like a miniature
- 28:11saw like that, in which case that is a tool, not a cooking
- 28:16utensil. I still say she was.
- 28:19She was in the right now if she did it, obviously it worked.
- 28:22They cut the cake really well. Anyway, she.
- 28:27She does it. She cuts the.
- 28:27Cake. David's dead.
- 28:29OK, Yeah. Well, let's just cut right to
- 28:31David. He's dead.
- 28:32He's hung up on the car rack. Easy.
- 28:33To cut right to David with a knife that size.
- 28:36Oh wow, here I am. All right, so she's dead.
- 28:40On the on the coat wreck. And I think she sees Harry
- 28:44Harold out there smiling like she spots Harold out there.
- 28:48It doesn't matter because 19 years later she is over this
- 28:51shit. Well, I mean, like, what are you
- 28:52going to do? You know, like you got to live
- 28:54your life. What's she going to do with that
- 28:56dessert? She's got she's.
- 28:58Got the dessert in her hands she's going to do.
- 29:00Guy, I'm sorry man, I just cut this cake.
- 29:05I'm sorry bro, I just got to wait.
- 29:08So 19 years later, she finally finished the cake and Tom gives
- 29:14Susan her kid she meets. He's like he meets her outside.
- 29:18Transfer type of thing. He's doing a little bit
- 29:20prematurely. He's supposed to be keeping her.
- 29:23But Tom is like, hey, like, take the fucking kid.
- 29:26I'm done with the kid. Yeah, she was like, he was like,
- 29:28I got things to do. And she goes well.
- 29:30So you, I, I will come get her at 5:00 as we planned.
- 29:33And then Eva is like, I wish one of my parents wanted me.
- 29:39God, story of this kid's movie. That's the horror movie going on
- 29:42with this kid right there. She just feels like she's not
- 29:44wanted. So Susan gets in the car with
- 29:47her boyfriend Jack. Which we find out later is her
- 29:49fiance. Oh yeah, they didn't really say
- 29:52that here. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:53So he is going to drop her off at the hospital and wait for her
- 29:57out front. And this ends up being a much
- 29:59longer wait. And he's like, I wish we had
- 30:02watched this before. I had to do my blood draw
- 30:04because you almost waited out in the hall and I, like, gave you a
- 30:10terrified look and you're like, OK, OK, I'll come in.
- 30:12But next time you try and threaten something like that,
- 30:14I'm going to be like, oh, well, you know who else thought that
- 30:17he would? He shouldn't come along for a
- 30:18doctor's appointment. I don't want to hurt your
- 30:20feelings, but I am already going to tell you I relate to Jack.
- 30:24And it's because a lot of times when we go to the hospital,
- 30:29like, yeah, this will only take 5-10 minutes and we're there an
- 30:31hour. And that's exactly what is going
- 30:33to happen to Jack here. I went off of what was in my
- 30:38chart. I'm sorry that it lied.
- 30:40See, that's the thing with hospitals.
- 30:41Hospitals take forever to do shit.
- 30:44So it's not your fault, it's just the reality.
- 30:47And that's exactly what Jack is about to experience, too.
- 30:51OK, so. She when they're in the car when
- 30:55she's leaving, she's like, hey, by the way, like, isn't this the
- 30:57hospital where like, you know, something went bad like last.
- 31:00Year A patient ran a muck. Yeah, ran a muck, yeah.
- 31:03Yeah, and honestly, I forgot about this until seeing this
- 31:06line in my notes right now, because that right there.
- 31:09Yeah, yeah. And then you see the doctor
- 31:11watching from up above out in there, like he knew that she was
- 31:14pulling in at that moment. So she finds out she needs to go
- 31:18to the 8th floor to see Doctor Jacobs and she gets on the
- 31:21elevator and we see a red dripping on her and it's a drunk
- 31:26man eating the ketchupiest hamburger from McDonald's.
- 31:29That's. Ever existed.
- 31:31Fucking gross. It is disgusting and she doesn't
- 31:34react. Instead she hits the wrong
- 31:37floor. She gets up there.
- 31:40The fumigators are just waiting for the elevator door to open.
- 31:43It doesn't seem like they needed to get on the elevator.
- 31:45I'm not gonna lie. I like, until I realized when
- 31:48this movie, this movie came out the same year as My Bloody
- 31:50Valentine, I thought it was a reference to My Bloody Valentine
- 31:52because they're all wearing, like, the masks, like the minor
- 31:54mask here. Yeah.
- 31:56And they're like, oh, ma'am, we're fumigating on the 9th
- 31:58floor. You have to go somewhere else.
- 31:59Which they, I don't know why this is a thing that's come up
- 32:02multiple times this week that just kind of annoys it.
- 32:04But they're like hey lady, you never hear like lady in a non
- 32:11weird context. Like it always comes across as
- 32:13rude. I always try and say that Lady,
- 32:17it's that Lady over there. It just.
- 32:20What do you say? Because I know like if you say
- 32:22like, you know, that girl, that's also not exactly.
- 32:24Good, that woman. That woman, What's wrong with
- 32:26lady? It's just the the context that
- 32:29it's used, it always comes across like, hey lady, like.
- 32:32If it's that aggressively like that Lady over there, no, no,
- 32:37Maybe these guys are coming off a little bit too.
- 32:38Aggressive. I don't know.
- 32:39I don't know. It's hard to explain.
- 32:41Maybe that fumigation just got them a little bit too
- 32:43misogynistic. Maybe.
- 32:45So she starts to go back down to the 8th floor and it the
- 32:49elevator shut off, we see somebody shut off the elevator
- 32:52and at the same time we see Doctor Jacobs being paged to the
- 32:569th floor. Yeah, and we also get a killer
- 32:58POV shot where he, like, goes into this room and he's got a
- 33:00picture of Susan hung up on the wall and he's just, like,
- 33:02caressing it. Dude I love the like choral
- 33:07music that happens there and it just like it comes up every time
- 33:12like the killer has just. It's a good piece of music.
- 33:14It's really unsettling. Near the end when she's running
- 33:17from him, we get so so in there and it's amazing.
- 33:21Yeah, it's really cool. So, yeah, so Doctor Jacobs is up
- 33:24there. She's looking around trying to
- 33:25figure out why she was paged up there.
- 33:27Paged up there. So it was emergency.
- 33:29I don't know, don't use your noggin lighty.
- 33:32Yeah, I mean, like, it's just so it's it's a little dumb like
- 33:37this right here is dumb that she just goes up there and she's
- 33:40like, I guess I'll wonder this abandoned for for this patient
- 33:43that needs me desperately. Like who the fuck is gonna put a
- 33:45patient up here? Doctor Jacobs.
- 33:47Well, you know what ends up happening?
- 33:49She gets stabbed a lot. A lot, yeah.
- 33:53And then the the doctor goes downstairs.
- 33:57They kill her doctor and swaps out some X-rays from Susan's
- 34:02chart. And Susan gets back down to the
- 34:058th floor, finds the office is empty, so she sits on a bench,
- 34:08and because it's 1981, she lights up a cigarette.
- 34:11Yeah, in the hospital. It's fucking crazy.
- 34:13That like was so jarring for me to see.
- 34:15Yeah, so then we we find upstairs, the janitor has found
- 34:22Doctor Jacobs in a pen. Why is he up here cleaning
- 34:25during the fumigate? I don't understand.
- 34:28Any of yeah, it just like if OK, if I have to go to I'll I'll
- 34:32throw this into the bad stuff. This is just bad.
- 34:35Yeah, it's bad. Like from a writing standpoint,
- 34:37like why are you making your characters like meander on a
- 34:39fumigated 4? Like I guess I get trying to
- 34:42have. Doing some reconstruction.
- 34:44That's what I was going to say. Like, I get having like an
- 34:47isolated thing, but like there have been several hospital
- 34:50movies that we have covered where it's construction and that
- 34:52is believable. It is so believable because
- 34:54hospitals always be reconstructing stuff.
- 34:56Because they always got money, Yeah, they're always like, we
- 34:59got to keep adding on. Yeah.
- 35:00Well and then like there's also like trying to keep up with ADA
- 35:02compliance like equipments on that it's got to get.
- 35:07Yeah, like there's all kinds of things.
- 35:08So the killer, because he's the killer, kills the janitor by
- 35:14dunking him into chemicals. Yeah, like he shoves his face
- 35:17into acid. It's it's pretty fucked gnarly.
- 35:20Yeah, so that's, you know, bad for him because he's just doing
- 35:24his job. Yeah.
- 35:25Susan is directed to the doctor's lounge to look for
- 35:29Doctor Jacobs. And.
- 35:30And there she runs into Harry, who is an intern.
- 35:33So Doctor Jacobs should be in her office.
- 35:35And he goes, wait, did you say your name?
- 35:37Susan? Jeremy, I recognize that name
- 35:39from our results list. Once again, I don't know when
- 35:45HIPAA became a law. I should know that, but I don't
- 35:47know when HIPA became a law. And I mean, if that's not his
- 35:51patient, he shouldn't actually know that.
- 35:54He's not even a doctor, he said. Like he said, he's an intern.
- 35:57Yeah, Like he he should not know anything.
- 35:59But he agrees that he'll get the results to her, but has to get
- 36:03an MD to sign off on them. So they go to Doctor Saxon's
- 36:05office, who doesn't agree to do this because he's like, I've got
- 36:09enough patients, and this is believable Dr. behavior.
- 36:14I don't want to help you. Yeah.
- 36:16But then Harry whispers something in his ear.
- 36:19He goes. He takes the pictures, the
- 36:23X-rays, he's looking at him. He's he steps out of the office
- 36:31and tells Susan to wait. And by this point I we don't
- 36:35even know what time it is, but it's definitely been a while.
- 36:38It's getting way. She's been here.
- 36:39I think we, we know, like have a shot of.
- 36:41It's outside and dark, and Jack has fallen asleep in the
- 36:44driver's seat, waiting for her. I really wish he was just out
- 36:47there until the end of the movie.
- 36:48Like he wakes up when the body hits the ground at the end.
- 36:50That would have been funny. Yeah.
- 36:53So she's back out in the hallway.
- 36:55Well, wait, no. She takes this opportunity to
- 36:57use Doctor Saxon's phone because.
- 36:59She's used the pay phone in the hall a few times to try and call
- 37:03Tom, and he's not answering the phone.
- 37:05So she uses the doctor's phone this time and Susan answers and
- 37:10she goes, hey, let me speak to your dad.
- 37:12And she goes, oh, well, he went out.
- 37:15And Susan is rightfully pissed because Ava is 6.
- 37:19She's young. Yeah.
- 37:21She's like, well, just don't open the door for anybody.
- 37:24Yeah, I think she meant that for even her dad.
- 37:27Yeah, She's like, don't let anybody in, especially your dad.
- 37:31Then some nurses come in and they bring Susan to a new exam
- 37:35room. She's told that the tests are
- 37:37inconclusive. And she's like, this is, this is
- 37:41a check up. I got a new job, I got new
- 37:44insurance. They just required a check up to
- 37:46cover me. And he is like, well, you need
- 37:50to get undressed for your exam. And so she does and she puts on
- 37:54the gown and then she comes out and he immediately pulls the
- 37:57gown off of her. And again, I get that they're
- 37:59going for the gratuitous nudity in this movie, but this is not
- 38:01the way exams work. Yeah, yeah, it's a, it's a
- 38:05pretty long process. It's really upsetting if he did
- 38:09need to pull the gown down like one of the nurses should have
- 38:12stayed in there for her comfort. Like there are so many things
- 38:16that should have happened. Also I don't even know what he's
- 38:19trying to test because like at one point he's like bumping on
- 38:23her stomach. Well her X-ray has some like
- 38:25weird shit in that area. So like, I think that that was
- 38:28like. What stomach X-rays are supposed
- 38:31to look like. I I don't either.
- 38:33I'm not a doctor. I can't tell you what should
- 38:35have been done or what was done incorrectly or what was weird
- 38:39here. Why?
- 38:40Did they do an an X-ray of her? I can understand an X-ray of her
- 38:43lungs. Maybe it's like a TB situation,
- 38:46like they need to like her titers are inconclusive or
- 38:50something. So they got to do an X-ray.
- 38:51I don't know, like why did I have an X-ray of her stomach?
- 38:55I don't know. I've had ongoing stomach issues
- 38:57and I've had all kinds of imaging.
- 38:59You know what? I haven't had tummy X-ray.
- 39:01Well, it too, I feel like the perfect answer to any of these
- 39:05questions is we'll get how this hospitals ran and that should
- 39:09have answered just about any question you have about why are
- 39:12they doing what they are. Doing here.
- 39:13That patient ran a muck last year.
- 39:15Yeah, probably was just sick of this bullshit doctor treatment.
- 39:20OK, so then she gets taken to another room.
- 39:23While she waits for her results, she is given a new gown.
- 39:28A child size gown. It appears it's fine.
- 39:33And then we we cut to Susie. Susie's transcribing notes.
- 39:36She's checking the blood that Doctor Saxon drew.
- 39:39And one of her colleagues comes in and says, hey, wanna go get a
- 39:42coffee. And she's like, Nope, I'm gonna
- 39:44stay here with my pair and work on these notes.
- 39:47And you think, oh, wow, Susie will never be found dead.
- 39:51But instead what happens is Susie gets step step stab the
- 39:55killer from an angle types in a lot fewer notes than there were
- 40:00on the initial sheet. And then her coworker comes back
- 40:04in, got her a coffee anyway. She knows Susie.
- 40:07She's like, Susie says she doesn't want a coffee, but I'm
- 40:10going to go ahead and get her a coffee.
- 40:11Like they've been working together for a while.
- 40:13They're buddies. She knows that she's going to
- 40:15get real grumpy at about 7:00 if she doesn't have her coffee.
- 40:21And it said, did she find? Oh yeah, the Co worker.
- 40:26Finds her, Yeah. She goes in there and the body
- 40:28falls out from where the guy, like, stored her in the closet
- 40:31there. And she runs out screaming down
- 40:33the hallway. And then the doctor chases her
- 40:35and starts, like, killing her right there in the hallway.
- 40:38And he just, like, grabs her, puts her in a wheelchair and
- 40:40just, like, wheels her into a room.
- 40:42Like, he doesn't like, wheel her in there.
- 40:44Like he just, like, throws her, Yeah.
- 40:47Harry, Doctor Saxon and Doctor Bean look at the notes and
- 40:51they're confused by the results because they're like, there's no
- 40:53symptoms. She can't have these test
- 40:55results with no. Symptoms.
- 40:55It's not. They're not.
- 40:57No symptoms, no symptoms. They're non existent.
- 41:00Like these are symptoms that don't even exist.
- 41:02Like this is just a jibberish shit.
- 41:03No, they're saying the test results, like the blood results
- 41:06are catastrophic and she doesn't have any symptoms of what these
- 41:09blood results. Oh, I thought that they're I
- 41:11thought they were saying like this shit doesn't make any
- 41:13sense. Like these are not they're.
- 41:14Saying it doesn't make any sense because they probably probably
- 41:16are showing like super like low counts of something or super
- 41:20high counts of something. OK.
- 41:22And I just like she's. Saying I'm fine and they're like
- 41:25you cannot be fine with this catastrophic level of.
- 41:28Results My my mind was like they made-up symptoms like levitating
- 41:31like this is non existent. This is not like a thing that
- 41:34actually happens to people like this is their.
- 41:36Interpretation of that, that's so much more fun.
- 41:38That's just what I thought was happening there.
- 41:40You know, that's the type of like maliciousness that I expect
- 41:42from this killer. Let's see, Susan is going to be
- 41:46kept under observation. For days.
- 41:49For days. Maybe, yeah.
- 41:51And she is with these 3 old biddies in her room that are
- 41:55mean. They are openly gossiping about
- 41:58her like what is wrong with her? I don't know her blood.
- 42:00Is redden poison? She looks young and lovely on
- 42:04the outside, but on the inside she decays.
- 42:07I like this. She's just like, I like this.
- 42:09She's just like, would you guys stop talking about me?
- 42:12Like, let it be known that you do not appreciate that.
- 42:17And like, that's such a shame because it could have been like
- 42:20a situation where these old ladies might be sweet grandma.
- 42:23Nie no, I I have noticed like the older that a lot of the
- 42:28people get, the more they like to spread misery.
- 42:31That is like a thing. Like that's just a thing I've
- 42:35noticed with older people. There's, there's some, there's
- 42:37some happy old people out there, but like especially these sets
- 42:40right here, this is a very common type of person.
- 42:43Let's see, roomies are mean. She leaves the room like she was
- 42:48like, I can't be in this room. And she runs into Harry and he's
- 42:51like chat, chat with her. She's like, I don't understand
- 42:53why I'm here. He goes, well, when was your
- 42:55last appointment? Doctor Jacobs?
- 42:56She goes two years ago. Everything was fine except I had
- 42:59like, low blood, low blood pressure.
- 43:01And he's like, well, we're not supposed to do this.
- 43:04Let's go look at your files. So they break into Doctor
- 43:07Jacob's office, and here's somebody else falling in behind
- 43:10them. So they take hiding lessons from
- 43:12Spaghett and hide behind a wire bookcase.
- 43:16Just as effective as Spaghett, yeah.
- 43:19And he pulls out her file and he's like, yeah, there's no
- 43:24reason for you to be here. Somebody is pulling a con on
- 43:26you. And he's like, I'm going to go
- 43:29talk to Doctor Saxon. We'll get this sorted out.
- 43:31You'll be out of here in no time.
- 43:33So Harry goes to Doctor Saxon's office and is empty, but he does
- 43:36get a phone call and he says yeah.
- 43:38Why? Why does he answer his phone?
- 43:43Why do people answer any of the phones in this movie?
- 43:45It's going to get weirder. This this answering the phone
- 43:47question is going to get weirder here in about 5 minutes.
- 43:50I guess so, yeah. So he's like, all right, I'll be
- 43:53right there. We don't know what was said.
- 43:55We don't hear the other end of this conversation.
- 43:57Then we see Jack downstairs. He decides he's going to go
- 43:59inside because he realizes he's been asleep for a while.
- 44:02And there is. Two hours.
- 44:03Susan, Yeah. So he he gets over to Susans
- 44:06room, he finds her and they are. He's like, we're just going to
- 44:11leave. Oh, that's.
- 44:12What I said, Yeah, yeah. I mean, yeah, like, why not?
- 44:15She's like, I mean, like, do you feel OK?
- 44:17And she's like, I feel fine. Like I I don't want to be here
- 44:19anymore. Let's just get out.
- 44:20She's even like, I don't even know where my clothes are.
- 44:21Let's just go. Let's just go and Doctor Saxon
- 44:25is coming off the elevators. They're headed to the elevator
- 44:27and he has the nurses holder against her will and tells Jack
- 44:31to wait by my. Office.
- 44:32I come back and fill you in. I understand her frustration and
- 44:36she's like Jack fucking do something, Don't stand there and
- 44:38just like let them do this because he.
- 44:41He was on Jack is not good under.
- 44:43Pressure. He's not a confrontational guy,
- 44:45I don't think. Yeah.
- 44:46So they like they're going and he's like, finally, like, what
- 44:49the fuck are you guys doing? And he's like, look, it's very
- 44:52serious with her. Just wait outside my office.
- 44:55I'll be over there. I'll meet with you shortly.
- 44:56OK. So he's like waiting out by the
- 44:59bench and they are strapping Susan down.
- 45:02No, they're not strapping her down yet.
- 45:04No, no, we have more things to happen. 1st we have to watch
- 45:09Jack sitting on this bench and the PA system says will the
- 45:14gentleman in the hallway please pick up the phone?
- 45:19So OK, actually let me answer something here.
- 45:22There was a moment that we didn't discuss before when she
- 45:25was first put into her room where there was an intercom
- 45:29saying, everybody please go into your rooms right now.
- 45:32You must be inside your room, so nobody in the hallways.
- 45:36So they had this one man out in the hall.
- 45:38So I that makes sense why they would do that.
- 45:41So they've got, he's like looking side to side, sees
- 45:46nobody, picks up the phone and says, yeah, the the intercom
- 45:51told me to pick up the phone. I'm the only one in the hall and
- 45:54he's called to the 9th floor. So he gets on the elevator, or
- 46:00he goes through the stairs and runs into the drunk hamburger
- 46:02man, who, like, you know, acts drunk and sloppy.
- 46:07And then as soon as Jack gets past them, he seems to sober up.
- 46:10So he might be putting on an act.
- 46:12We don't know. So he gets upstairs and he goes
- 46:19into a room and we see. First off, he sees the old women
- 46:24up there roaming the halls, which I thought was very
- 46:27strange. They're up.
- 46:28They're still just looking for Doctor Jacobs.
- 46:30Like, why? Why did they leave to go look
- 46:32for her? Like, I don't know, it was just
- 46:35so out of the blue here. He gets into a room and he sees
- 46:38a shadow behind a like dressing partition and hears a whispering
- 46:45of like, basically jealousy. Like we know that the killer is
- 46:49doing this because they want Susan.
- 46:51And he goes around behind the partition and it's Susie
- 46:55murdered in the wheelchair. And he turns around and the
- 46:58doctor's there with a bone saw. Yeah, he gets in there.
- 47:02Yep. So the killer drops off a
- 47:04package in Susan's room and she turns around and it's this big
- 47:09beautiful red box with a bow on it, and she unties it and slowly
- 47:13lifts it up. It's Jack's head.
- 47:16So she runs screaming because, duh, she finds men in traction,
- 47:22like I said before, and they're just like.
- 47:25And then she runs up into the doctor's lounge.
- 47:27She's kind of barricading herself and she's screaming.
- 47:30And Doctor Saxon and Nurse Kitty find her and they're trying to
- 47:34calm her down and she's just screaming.
- 47:36She can't do anything. And she's like, listen, his box,
- 47:39this box has his head in it. He was killed.
- 47:42My fiance is dead and we need to get out of here.
- 47:44Somebody's murdering people. But this box is retied and we
- 47:48know she didn't retire before she left, so we know it's not
- 47:52going to be Jack's head and in fact it is a Valentine's Day
- 47:55cake, which you question the validity of.
- 47:58But apparently this is a tradition for Susan.
- 48:01Apparently, yeah. I You know, if you let us know
- 48:05if you do Valentine's Day cake. Valentine's cake.
- 48:08It makes sense. Yeah.
- 48:09Why wouldn't you have cake anyway?
- 48:12They they, this is where they strap her down to a Gurney
- 48:17because they say she's having hallucinations.
- 48:19She's like, finally we have a symptom.
- 48:21Wow. Don't do anything else or we may
- 48:23have to operate. What are they?
- 48:26Doing that was such a that was such like when he said that in a
- 48:30moment I was like, what the fuck?
- 48:31Like what do you like? Why like, what are you going to
- 48:33do? Like I, I don't even know, like
- 48:36they don't even know what's happening.
- 48:38Like how are you going to operate if you don't know what
- 48:40the fuck is going on? Nope, I lied.
- 48:43This is actually where she's not.
- 48:44She's still not being strapped down yet.
- 48:46We're still jumping ahead. We're still jumping ahead.
- 48:48This is where she's given the pill, and she cheeks it.
- 48:50Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:51And so she sneaks out and she decides she's going to go
- 48:53upstairs to the archives because Doctor Saxon said he will go
- 48:56check the files upstairs because if the copies are no longer in
- 48:58Doctor Jacob's office, there will be, there's a copy upstairs
- 49:01in the archives. So Susan goes and she is going
- 49:04to check on him, checking on these files, and while she's
- 49:08waiting for the elevator, this is where she hears the doctor,
- 49:11Doc Vader. This is such a fucking good
- 49:15scene and this is so tense. Except it is great, it is tense.
- 49:19The music is great for the moment, but all I could think of
- 49:22like is if we didn't hear this music, we would hear her.
- 49:24Like slip her on the floor desperately trying to get her.
- 49:27Zippo back to her. It is a little bit implausible
- 49:30because she drops a lighter while she's hiding back there
- 49:32and it rolls out like just barely out from beneath the
- 49:37curtain and she feels the need to have to reach out with her
- 49:41foot to slide it back under. Which I don't understand because
- 49:46I feel like that's way more noticeable than just a random
- 49:49lighter being on the ground. Like why would this guy like
- 49:52stop and pause at the sight of a lighter?
- 49:54But like, your foot just kind of like, you know, clumsily, like
- 49:59just trying to get a lighter slid back to you is not a
- 50:02distraction. And he already heard it falling.
- 50:06So all you're doing is creating more sound and drawing more
- 50:09attention to yourself. It was a little bit stupid, but
- 50:12the overall just like shot of him just standing there and it's
- 50:16like that slow pan of her, just like looking up at him and you
- 50:19just see his face and he's just breathing heavily and the music
- 50:22queue and everything like that. It just is so well done.
- 50:26So the elevator arrives and he stops looking and just goes back
- 50:30upstairs and she takes the actual staircase and when she
- 50:33does she runs. Such a drunk hamburger man.
- 50:36Forces himself on. Her yeah, he is gross.
- 50:38He is creepy. He is not somebody that we want
- 50:41to spend any more time with. And if we find out he's the
- 50:44killer, we're not going to be mad.
- 50:47So she makes it to the record room and she notices Dr. Saxon
- 50:50is in there looking through the records and she's peeking.
- 50:53She almost gets caught by him, he doesn't notice, and then as
- 50:57she continues to watch, the doctor comes in and kills Doctor
- 51:00Saxon. This is where she runs back
- 51:01downstairs, and when she's downstairs she's screaming.
- 51:04Doctor Bean and Nurse Kitty strap her down for real this
- 51:08time. I'm reading it right here in my
- 51:10notes. And then Dr. Bean, he's going to
- 51:13plan to operate on her. So the nurse goes and gets
- 51:16scrubbed up, and Doctor bean's working on getting scrubbed up.
- 51:19So the nurse is in the hall. This is a good moment too.
- 51:22This is crazy. I did not expect this.
- 51:24Yeah. So she looks down the hall and
- 51:26she sees the Doctor walking with, like, a big sheet in front
- 51:29of him. Like a ghost.
- 51:30Yeah. Except like, not even over his
- 51:32head like a ghost, Just like he's holding it up as a big
- 51:35square. Yeah.
- 51:36And when she's like, she's confused because.
- 51:39Yeah. How do you react to that?
- 51:41And then he gets close enough, drops it over her head like it's
- 51:44a net or something, and injects her with something lethal,
- 51:48presumably because now she's got this thing over her head and
- 51:52she's like, not walking in a straight line.
- 51:54And she eventually like falls and just dies under her blanket.
- 51:57My initial thought if I were to see that in the hallway would
- 52:00not be I'm about to die. I would think it's a prank, like
- 52:03somebody just like fucking around with me.
- 52:05You. Know yeah, I'd be like haha this
- 52:07is silly yeah yeah, no. And she just dies.
- 52:10That's really cool. I like that at the moment.
- 52:12Too. And then Dr. Beam, he's, you
- 52:14know, falling proper dawning protocols.
- 52:16He's washing his hands. He's getting ready to put all
- 52:19the surgical gear on, and he gets killed as well.
- 52:24And then Susan is in a room. The doctor comes and takes her,
- 52:29wheels her to the OR and guess who it is?
- 52:33It is Harry. And she says Harry and he goes
- 52:36no, not Harry, Harold. But again, if this is a crime of
- 52:42opportunity, how did he already get people so used to calling
- 52:47him Harry that it wasn't weird? Because like, that's how all the
- 52:53doctors refer to him as Harry. I'm gonna say I didn't live the
- 52:58same life with the people I met after I left school.
- 53:02But he seems so offended of Harry versus Harold.
- 53:06It's kind of like if somebody ran into me and they called me
- 53:09Jessica, I'd be like, yeah, we're not friends.
- 53:11Cuz that's just that's. Weird, yeah.
- 53:15Yeah, So this is, you know, he's having his big, like, grand
- 53:19villain speech. And then the three fates walk in
- 53:22and they're like, are you a doctor, Jacob?
- 53:24He's, he's wanting to take her heart.
- 53:25He's, he's about to like, cut out her heart because like, I
- 53:28want what I wanted when I was a kid.
- 53:30Your heart. And so she takes the
- 53:33distraction, stabs him and runs. He follows her and they are
- 53:39upstairs in like a storage area type of place.
- 53:42And there's all kinds of like equipment and files and boxes.
- 53:48And at one point she is climbing the ladder and he's following
- 53:50her and she's got this like, glass bottle of Flambo liquid
- 53:55and she pours it on him and she runs out.
- 53:58He's distracted because it also burns.
- 54:00She runs out to the roof. And she kind of has the, the
- 54:03thing like blocked with a rope, like has the handle with the
- 54:07rope over it. So he can't get out.
- 54:08Except he just pulls the knife out of his own stomach, cuts the
- 54:12rope, follows her onto the roof. She's got a giant pipe.
- 54:16She uses that to beat him a lot. And then Chekhov's Zippo lighter
- 54:23and vial of flammable liquid. What is necessary after all?
- 54:27She lights him on fire and he's still chasing her as he's on
- 54:31fire and she lets him just wily coyote right off the edge of the
- 54:36roof. I appreciated that they let an
- 54:38actual dummy burn and fall off the roof of a building here.
- 54:41It was pretty cool. I wish I could have been on set
- 54:44for that safety meeting. And then it just ends with her
- 54:48running outside and she sees her ex-husband and her daughter and
- 54:52they all hug and then the credits roll.
- 54:53She found her clothes. Yeah, she did find her close.
- 54:56Well, she had enough time after all that.
- 54:59I think, I think it's just a fun movie.
- 55:01I really like it. I'm going to keep it at A9.
- 55:03OK, yeah, I like this movie a lot too.
- 55:05Like it. It works really well for me as a
- 55:07slasher and I'll do 8 1/2 still, I like it a lot.
- 55:10What would you change? If I had to change anything,
- 55:15it's tough because there's not a lot of things that I would
- 55:18really do differently. I guess like the whole thing, it
- 55:27was just stupid with the whole thing with like the fumigated
- 55:319th floor as a reason, like come up with a better excuse to get
- 55:34these people separated. Other than that, you know,
- 55:36Because like, I know that we're kind of like in a cheesy horror
- 55:39movie and I really don't care ultimately.
- 55:41But if I'm having like, we'll get this under a lens and like
- 55:44critique something that was a really dumb riding move.
- 55:47OK, that's fair. Yeah.
- 55:49All right. What's the dream sequel?
- 55:54Dream sequel to this? Well, it's.
- 56:02Been a while since I've done that.
- 56:05Do we think Harry survived that fall?
- 56:13He survived the fall and now we have kind of a burning
- 56:16situation. Oh, there we go.
- 56:18I like that. Yeah, it takes place at a
- 56:21hospital. Again, I wish we knew what kind
- 56:23of place that she worked at before that way, like, we know
- 56:26if, like, that has any potential, like, maybe her
- 56:29business has to, like, have some kind of business relationship
- 56:33with the hospital that he gets at and just be there for, like,
- 56:37a work meeting or something. And he comes out of his coma
- 56:41that day because this guy is all about coincidences and chance,
- 56:46you know? So, yeah.
- 56:47Yeah. And then it's Valentine's Day
- 56:49again and yeah, you know, he just, like, goes on another
- 56:53killing rampage in the hospital this time isn't burnt up, dude.
- 56:57This time she is swapping all of his medical records to try and
- 57:01keep him like in an isolation room.
- 57:03Oh, that's smart. I like that.
- 57:06OK, cool, that was easy. Who did you relate to?
- 57:09No, I already said Jack one 100%.
- 57:13I get it. I mean, I guess I have to relate
- 57:19to Susan. Because of the whole medical
- 57:21stuff you're dealing with, I've. Been spending a lot of time at
- 57:23hospitals lately. I mean, it's an unfortunate
- 57:28thing. Yeah, yeah.
- 57:29You got the hospital thing going on for you right now.
- 57:32Yep, Yep, OK. But even more importantly than
- 57:36all of that, that was Scout's favorite part of this movie.
- 57:42Was it when he caught on fire? See, I understand what you would
- 57:48think, that yeah, this fire is warm.
- 57:50Yeah, and Scout always wants to be warm.
- 57:52But obviously her favorite part is when Susan was strapped down,
- 57:57because that means Scout could lay on her and get comfortable.
- 58:00With. Susan.
- 58:01Moving, yeah, like you can, you can't get up now.
- 58:04Like that's the thing with Scout is any time that she gets on my
- 58:07lap, it always happens to be at the moment where I have to stand
- 58:10up and do something. Like it's like the oven just
- 58:13gave us the one minute alert and she's like, all right, I'm
- 58:16gonna. Here's my chance.
- 58:18Yeah. And The thing is, she like, she
- 58:22is like very intentional for when she wants to be on lap.
- 58:25And when we just deny her that. Yeah, it's just it upsets her
- 58:30that much more. OK, I got it.
- 58:33That makes sense. OK.
- 58:34And then I guess that just leaves us this articular
- 58:38question. To be or not to be?
- 58:42Yeah, obviously, Yeah. I mean, we like this movie, so
- 58:45we 100% recommend you watch it, especially if you want something
- 58:48for Valentine's Day and you just want to have like, an excuse to
- 58:51throw on a swasher with the holiday theme.
- 58:53This is a great opportunity for them.
- 58:56It's not even long either. It's like an hour and a half.
- 58:58You know, like, not bad. It's good.
- 59:01I disagree with the thing saying that it's slow paced.
- 59:04I think it does a really good job of building tension.
- 59:07But I never at any point felt like OK, this isn't necessary.
- 59:10Yeah. OK.
- 59:11So let's get into some of that. Then let's go into some of the
- 59:14reviews because I have pulled 2A positive and a negative.
- 59:18So let me see here. Let's start off with I got so
- 59:26many reviews right here. Holy shit.
- 59:29Is this a good one or a bad one? Did you not pull any beforehand?
- 59:31No, I got them all right here and also have them for Wolf
- 59:34Creek too, though, and like the. Yeah, OK, OK, well, let's start
- 59:38with a bad one here. 3 out 10 ridiculous medical horror movie.
- 59:44Oh boy, where do I begin? Hospital massacre also known as
- 59:47X-ray. Be my Valentine or else.
- 59:50And ward 13 is trash. Wow, I didn't know I had that
- 59:53many. Names.
- 59:54So many names. Fun trash, but trash
- 59:56nonetheless. The lovely Barbie Benton plays
- 59:58Susan Jeremy, a divorced mother of a young daughter who goes to
- 1:00:01the hospital to pick up some test results in it.
- 1:00:03And that is where the movie's wheels fall off.
- 1:00:05It seemed that a creepy kid who left her a Valentine's Day card
- 1:00:08played by Charles Lucia as Harold Rusk as.
- 1:00:11And Billie Jane as young Harold Rusk is full blown crazy and is
- 1:00:15now killing off the various hospital staff in order to
- 1:00:17falsify her records and to stalk her through the hospital.
- 1:00:21Now it's a good premise if done right, but this is done so very
- 1:00:24wrong. For a start, there is no way
- 1:00:26hospital staff would behave like this, not unless they wanted to
- 1:00:30be hit with lawsuits up the wazoo.
- 1:00:32John Warner Williams is Doctor, Rand Saxton is suitably creepy,
- 1:00:35and the nurses are downright abusive.
- 1:00:38One reviewer mentioned it was Kafkaesque and it is but two
- 1:00:41over the top it becomes unbelievable, which makes it
- 1:00:44silly. The sad thing is this could have
- 1:00:47been a great movie. All of the ingredients were
- 1:00:49there, but the director Bose Davidson, who also wrote it,
- 1:00:53really flopped if he had toned down the more over the top
- 1:00:58parts. Have the doctors tell her
- 1:01:00directly that there were some serious results and which she
- 1:01:03and would she consider remaining for the tests instead of
- 1:01:06creepily whispering and casting ominously glances as they were
- 1:01:12as if they were serial killers. Oh, and that examination scene?
- 1:01:16What doctor would examine a patient with them being given a
- 1:01:19hospital gown? That was when I mentally checked
- 1:01:21out. Wait, when was this review
- 1:01:24written? 2023.
- 1:01:25OK. So they're definitely coming at
- 1:01:26it from a lens of the modern lenses would be like, yeah,
- 1:01:31suitable. Today, now I know that I am
- 1:01:33probably being a spoil sport by being so nitpicky, but I could
- 1:01:36see the potential if it had been done by a better director.
- 1:01:39There are many other hospital horror movies that are much
- 1:01:41better. This was obviously done just as
- 1:01:43a quick cash grab to get in on the slasher movies.
- 1:01:47OK, Oh I did give an extra star for the creepy old ladies and
- 1:01:51the bandaged patients and traction writhing around like
- 1:01:54somebody out of purgatory. Now, if this had been all fever
- 1:01:56dream, it might have actually worked.
- 1:01:58OK. OK, I mean, those were those
- 1:02:03were some things that we had talked about, you know, like the
- 1:02:06hospital staff being like downright evil.
- 1:02:08But I thought that that kind of played into the movie.
- 1:02:11I didn't mind the fact that they were whispering and not sharing
- 1:02:15the medical information with Susie or Susan the entire time
- 1:02:17'cause I thought that that was like an extra layer of horror in
- 1:02:20itself. I mean, it worked like that for
- 1:02:22me. So I don't know if that was the
- 1:02:24intention, but, you know, it ended up working for me and I
- 1:02:26don't really have any complaints myself for that.
- 1:02:28OK, what about you? I mean, like I said, like some
- 1:02:33of those things, yes, this is absolutely how things wouldn't
- 1:02:36work. But also like there are, there
- 1:02:38have been a lot, a lot of like rules and regulations that have
- 1:02:43happened since 1981. That's true, Yeah.
- 1:02:45There's a lot of different stuff.
- 1:02:47I mean, that's like, that's, Oh my God, like over 40 years ago.
- 1:02:51Yeah. I mean, I can think of the
- 1:02:54difference in the doctors I've been going to for like the past
- 1:02:57eight or so years, Like there is a huge difference in how they
- 1:03:00have to do things because of new regulations that exist.
- 1:03:04So like, yes, it, it is a little bit distracting when you look at
- 1:03:08it from that modern lens. And there are definitely some
- 1:03:10things that wouldn't have flown back then either.
- 1:03:12But I I don't agree with some of the other things like this is
- 1:03:17it's a silly movie. It's a movie like suspicion of,
- 1:03:21you know, disbelief for whatever.
- 1:03:22Yeah. OK, let's let's do the positive
- 1:03:24review. OK.
- 1:03:26This is 7 out 10 from 2013. Among the small sub sub sub
- 1:03:31genre of horror movies that are the hospital slashers also
- 1:03:35including Halloween too and visiting hours is the kooky
- 1:03:37story of murder. 1 realizes this early on just how absurd the
- 1:03:41whole thing is. Story author and director Bose
- 1:03:44Davidson adds enough offbeat and humorous touches to his
- 1:03:47presentation to make this something other than the typical
- 1:03:50slasher. Slasher fanatics may be
- 1:03:52disappointed that the body count isn't larger, but some of the
- 1:03:54murders are effectively gory and sadistic, and lead actress
- 1:03:57Barbie Benton, the Playboy icon and companion to Hugh Hefner for
- 1:04:00several years, shows off the goods in a pervy examination
- 1:04:03scene. Just to give you an idea of how
- 1:04:06Davidson approaches such material, there's the inclusion
- 1:04:08of the three strange or elderly female patients who drives Susan
- 1:04:13up the wall. He creates some suspense and
- 1:04:15some atmosphere, but he never takes himself too seriously.
- 1:04:18The acting isn't inspired, but it is serviceable.
- 1:04:21Ben is a fine screamer and puts up a good fight.
- 1:04:24Charles Lucia Society I didn't realize he's in Society is
- 1:04:28amiable. Amiable as helpful intern Harry
- 1:04:32John Van Ness, the Hitcher plays Susans boyfriend Jack
- 1:04:35adequately, and John Warner Williams is effective at making
- 1:04:38his Doctor Saxon character the kind of character whom you just
- 1:04:41want to punch in the face. The opening back story features
- 1:04:44Elizabeth Hoy as young Susan and Billy Jane.
- 1:04:46OK, whatever. Pacing is decent, the labs are
- 1:04:49frequent, and topping it all off is a priceless, ridiculous music
- 1:04:52score by Arlen Ober that utilizes a lot of vocalizations.
- 1:04:55All in all, this is pretty fun for those who like their horror
- 1:04:59with a healthy sense of humor. 7 out of 10.
- 1:05:02I agree with most of that. Yeah, I didn't necessarily find
- 1:05:05a lot of humor in all of this stuff here.
- 1:05:06There were some humor scenes like the thing with Jack out in
- 1:05:09the car, like falling asleep and stuff like that.
- 1:05:12And I guess like the old ladies, like kind of roam in the hall
- 1:05:14was a little bit communicate times.
- 1:05:17But like I I took this mostly it's just like a straight
- 1:05:21straight up horror movie that was, in my opinion, pretty well
- 1:05:24done. OK.
- 1:05:26All right. That's it for the review some.
- 1:05:28All right, all right. I guess that's probably it for
- 1:05:30X-ray. Yeah, that's it.
- 1:05:32So we'll see you later this week when we talk about Wolf Creek,
- 1:05:38all right? Is that good?
- 1:05:41That was that was fantastic. OK, yeah.
- 1:05:43So yeah, we're going to be talking about Wolf Creek on the
- 1:05:46normal feed, so be on the lookout for that on Thursday.

- 1:06:37further deep dive exam on it. So yeah, we'll catch you guys.
