- 0:02Hi welcome back hour number two Miller in Condon Iowa sports
- 0:05radio network Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 KX and nowhere
- 0:09ever listening in the state of Iowa anywhere on the iheart app.
- 0:12We are grateful that you are. We take you until 2O clock still
- 0:15to come 15 minutes out probably 10-12 minutes.
- 0:18Dave Sinican from zonecoverage.com also works at
- 0:22KFAN on the weekends with Packer preview.
- 0:25He'll join us, take a look at Sunday Night Football, Steelers
- 0:30and the Green Bay Packers. Dane Mazatani's in Los Angeles,
- 0:33Sofi Stadium, the scene it is the Vikings and the Chargers
- 0:37tonight. Dane, thank you as always for
- 0:39doing this. Saint Paul Pioneer Press for
- 0:41Dane, feels like a really big spot for both teams.
- 0:44Dane, does that seem like that to you as well?
- 0:47Yeah, I think so. I think it's fair to call this a
- 0:50must win for both the Vikings and the Chargers.
- 0:52And while I won't go as far to say whoever loses this game
- 0:56should pack their bags because the season's over, sure feels
- 1:00like it could be kind of the first domino in that process
- 1:03because he dropped below 500 tonight.
- 1:06If you lose, looking at the Vikings specifically, they just
- 1:09they need some good vibes back. I think everything feels a
- 1:12little heavy right now. And I think it's probably the
- 1:15same thing with the Chargers, like both teams dealing with
- 1:18injuries. Both teams probably thought
- 1:21they'd be in a different situation when these two teams
- 1:24were meeting up to play each other and all of a sudden now
- 1:28we're sitting here in October saying both teams better win
- 1:31this game. So I think we'll see two
- 1:33desperate teams tonight, see who comes out on top.
- 1:36So the quarterback spot, it has not gone great for Carson Wentz
- 1:41went up against his former team last week and the same kind of
- 1:44same old, same old. Here's JJ McCarthy with an ankle
- 1:46injury. It just feels odd.
- 1:49He was good enough to be the emergency third quarterback last
- 1:52week, but not good enough to play.
- 1:54Are they protecting him? I know you're hearing all the
- 1:56questions. I know you guys are asking all
- 1:57the questions up there. What can you tell us the latest
- 2:00on the quarterback front for the Vikings?
- 2:02Yeah. I think what Carson Wentz has
- 2:04proved over the last month is that Carson Wentz is a backup.
- 2:07And I think we've known that, but I think there was maybe an
- 2:11inclination or a hope within the fan base that he could be the
- 2:15next Case Keenum, He could be the next Sam Darnold like Kevin
- 2:20O'Connell can fix them. He is what he is and what he is
- 2:24is a backup who's gone two and two and done the job for the
- 2:28most part, but hasn't done enough to create a real
- 2:30quarterback controversy in Minnesota.
- 2:33So when JJ McCarthy is ready to go, he will be the starter.
- 2:36I think that is if you're the Vikings and trying to look at
- 2:39this with the glass half full mentality, it's that you don't
- 2:42have to go through all of those conversations.
- 2:46It's just plain to see right in front of you.
- 2:48JJ McCarthy is your guy Now the injury, I know some people have
- 2:52been skeptical about it. I I wish it's a real injury.
- 2:55He's hurt. And I think what the what the
- 2:57Vikings are doing right now is like they're making sure that
- 3:01when he's back, he has every opportunity within him to
- 3:04succeed. And I know people push.
- 3:07Well, you know. Patching Mahomes play with its
- 3:09high ankle sprain in the Super Bowl?
- 3:10Yes, that's Patrick Mahomes. That's one of the greatest ever.
- 3:13Do it. Maybe the greatest ever do it,
- 3:15not a guy who's coming off a rough second game in the NFL
- 3:19with only two games of experience under his belt.
- 3:21So the Vikings are doing right by by their investment by their
- 3:25their young franchise quarterback.
- 3:27They're not going to throw them out there until he's ready.
- 3:30And I think right now they don't feel he's ready to go.
- 3:32Like he can't protect himself if he has to.
- 3:35He can't do all the necessary movements in the pocket that are
- 3:38required of an NFL quarterback. He's getting close.
- 3:41I've seen him. He's in good spirits.
- 3:44I think Detroit is a possibility, but we'll have to
- 3:47see. I think he's going to have to
- 3:48log full participation for an entire week before the Vikings
- 3:52even entertain the idea of him and going back under center.
- 3:55And the question is just get louder and I think is based on
- 3:58the following things. Daniel Jones looks great with
- 4:00the Colts. Sam Darnold is off to a great
- 4:02start. We've seen that before until
- 4:04Week 16 and then the 17 rather than the wild card game on that
- 4:08Monday night. And Aaron Rodgers, yes,
- 4:10sometimes he looks old, but sometimes he looks really good.
- 4:12If those three Q BS were falling on their face this year, maybe,
- 4:17maybe the outcry wouldn't be as loud.
- 4:18Dane. Yeah, I think so.
- 4:20And that's totally fair to look at it that way.
- 4:22I mean, Sam Darnold's been by some metrics, the best
- 4:25quarterback in the NFL. Daniel Jones is leading what
- 4:28some people feel is the best team in the NFL, and Aaron
- 4:31Rodgers at times has looked like Aaron Rodgers.
- 4:34So the fact that in some way, shape or form, you could say
- 4:40that those three were all available to you at your
- 4:42disposal and you passed on all of those guys to move forward
- 4:47with JJ McCarthy. Like, it's easy to kind of say,
- 4:49well, do they regret their decision?
- 4:52I don't know. I don't think so.
- 4:54Because like, if everybody, like, if they knew Sam Darnold
- 4:57was going to continue to play at that level, yeah, they probably
- 5:00would just tag them. But I think it's context is
- 5:03really important here. And it's easy to kind of stay
- 5:05hindsight. They should have done it.
- 5:08Tim Darnold had an opportunity to prove himself.
- 5:10He had an opportunity to solidify himself as the guy last
- 5:14season and he fell flat on his face in the final two games of
- 5:17the year. And while that shouldn't be a
- 5:20referendum on his turn around of his career, I do think it's
- 5:23reasonable for the Vikings to say, all right, let's give the
- 5:27number 10 pick in the draft a shot So the story is not played
- 5:31out. I think we probably owe it to
- 5:35just logic in general, but also to JJ McCarthy to give him more
- 5:38than just two games to decide whether the Vikings made the
- 5:41worst mistake in in the history of the NFL.
- 5:44So I think that's the reaction right now.
- 5:47But a lot has to play out still. And and they still believe in
- 5:50the kid. And then I do too.
- 5:52No Van Ginkle this week injury wise and makes sense, right?
- 5:56He's maybe close to returning, but you get kind of the mini bye
- 5:59week here with the Thursday and we'll see.
- 6:01Dallas Turner is going to have to step up.
- 6:03What else can you tell us on the injury front?
- 6:05Offensive line with Kelly and Darasaw?
- 6:07That's always a question. And Aaron Jones back in
- 6:09practice. What are they expecting out of
- 6:10him this week? Yeah, So only guys that ever
- 6:13have been ruled out aside from Ryan Kelly, he's on injury
- 6:16reserve. You, you mentioned it, Andrew
- 6:18Van Ginkle and CJ Ham. Those guys won't play.
- 6:21I think if it's a regular week, maybe they they're both ready
- 6:25for Sunday short week. Everybody hates them for a
- 6:27reason. Not only does it create kind of
- 6:30clunky football games, I think it's really hard for players to
- 6:32turn over and and 72 hours basically going through a car
- 6:36crash every Sunday. So those two are out.
- 6:40An interesting part of the injury report or something that
- 6:42that piqued my interest was Christian Dare saw popping up
- 6:45yesterday as a limited as a questionable with an injury
- 6:49designation. I think when you look at the
- 6:52amount of snaps he played last week, there is a chance that
- 6:56they want to just give him the week based on how his knee feels
- 7:00pregame. And I think that's why he's he's
- 7:02popping up his questionable. I think they'll give him a shot
- 7:05pregame, see what he what he can do and from there kind of make
- 7:10that determination. But he's certainly somebody to
- 7:13keep an eye on pregame. Something I will be keeping an
- 7:16eye on pregame game goes for Brian O'Neil.
- 7:19Now, if Kirsten Dare saw Brian O'Neil can't play tonight,
- 7:21obviously the Vikings are going to feel pretty bad going into
- 7:26the game because those are your book and tackles.
- 7:28What they can feel good about is, you know, reports are that
- 7:31Aaron Jones will make his return tonight.
- 7:33So that will buoy the offense. It will provide, I think, a shot
- 7:36of life to the passing game, maybe even more than the running
- 7:40game. Aaron Jones as an effective
- 7:42option out of the backfield is something I think this offense
- 7:45has been missing, you know, with the quick game and things of
- 7:48that nature. So injuries all over the place,
- 7:51but this is what you expect when, when you when you make
- 7:54guys play on on 72 hours rest. The charges Will they wear the
- 7:58Savannah banana uniforms? Those were hideous.
- 8:02My God. I don't think so.
- 8:05I think I think they're blue tonight.
- 8:07But yeah, I agree with you. Just if you have the baby Blues,
- 8:10like watch. Spread those other times, yes.
- 8:13My question, Dave, for you, you've been to Sofi, obviously
- 8:17you're there, Wild card Monday night.
- 8:18I, I'd love that. Not the result obviously, but
- 8:20just having a wild card game on Monday night.
- 8:23What's Sofi like? It looks spectacular on
- 8:26television. I've driven by it and never been
- 8:28into it. And obviously it's on the side
- 8:30of the old Hollywood Park racetrack, not far from LAX at
- 8:33all. What's it like as a stadium day?
- 8:35And you've been to multiple, many of them, if not all of the
- 8:38NFL stops along the way. Where's Sofi rank?
- 8:41What's it like? It's, it looks like a spaceship.
- 8:44That's the only way I would describe it like it, it looks so
- 8:47futuristic, like it couldn't possibly have been built in the
- 8:50year 2023 or 4. Whenever it opened, it looks
- 8:54like it was straight out of the year 3000.
- 8:57So it's, it's something that, you know, I feel fortunate to be
- 9:01able to go to all these stadiums, but at a certain point
- 9:04some of them start to look the same.
- 9:06So Sofi Stadium does not. Sofi Stadium looks wholly
- 9:10different than than any stadium I've ever been in that we were
- 9:14joking with the writers last year.
- 9:16We actually got lost because we don't exit, you know, ground
- 9:19floor. You would assume the ground
- 9:21floor is the one you exit on. Well, no.
- 9:23So far it's built kind of like it's a bunker.
- 9:25She actually exit on like the fifth floor.
- 9:27So intuitively it doesn't make sense.
- 9:29We ended up in the basement last year looking up at the street.
- 9:32How do we get up there? So it's really cool and yeah,
- 9:37cool stadium. I don't think many can compare
- 9:40to U.S. bank Stadium. I get to go there every week
- 9:42basically. But Sofi Stadium can certainly
- 9:44rival it. And it's open air, right?
- 9:47Yeah, it is open air, but also like they've managed to somehow
- 9:51make it closed in some area. Like it's just so modern.
- 9:57You got to really experience it to be able to kind of fully
- 10:00appreciate it. I know it pops on TV, but I
- 10:03remember going there last year. It was.
- 10:05It's quite the spectacle. Prediction time.
- 10:07Dane, what do you think? How does this one play out
- 10:09tonight? What are we going to see and
- 10:10what are you going to be writing out at the writing about at the
- 10:13Pioneer Press? All right, don't hate me.
- 10:17I picked them to lose. And the Pioneer Press and I my
- 10:21explanation or my analysis in the paper was sometimes analysis
- 10:26doesn't have to be overly advanced.
- 10:28It can just be something as simple as Justin Herbert plays
- 10:31quarterback for the Chargers and Carson Wentz is going to be
- 10:33playing quarterback for the Vikings.
- 10:35I think one guy is obviously better than the other guy, and I
- 10:38think one guy understands, you know, my the fate of my
- 10:43franchise kind of rest on on the shoulders of me having a good
- 10:46game tonight. I think Justin Herbert just
- 10:48simply will do more than Carson Wentzville tonight, and I think
- 10:52that'll be the difference. Good.
- 10:53Stuff Dane was the Tony Saint Paul Pioneer Press
- 10:55twincities.com for Dane. Dane, as always, thank you for
- 10:58doing this for us. Appreciate it and enjoy your
- 11:01weekend off. If if nothing else, thank you,
- 11:03Dane. Yeah, anytime, guys.
- 11:05Yeah, good to talk to you, Dane Mizutani, as we check in on the
- 11:08Vikings and the Chargers. I agree with them.
- 11:10I think the Vikings are in a tough spot tonight.
- 11:14Justin Herbert and company. I'm so glad they're not wearing
- 11:16those. Those were hideous.
- 11:18Yeah. Savannah banana uniforms and
- 11:21don't they usually? I'm surprised actually.
- 11:23We don't aren't subjected to that tonight, 'cause isn't
- 11:26Thursday night colour rush night.
- 11:27Didn't they call it that at one point?
- 11:28They did for a couple of years, but yeah, that hasn't been the
- 11:30case, the case the last few. Did you see those uniforms last
- 11:33week, Davidson? The charges, what they wore.
- 11:36Yeah, I'm not a fan either. Not good.
- 11:38Speaking of awful alternate uniforms, the Packers year after
- 11:41year have to have I. Like.
- 11:42Those ones which one the. Old ones, the old throwback.
- 11:45Those things are hideous. I like they're all hideous.
- 11:48Though you guys want to see, you want to see hideous, the
- 11:50Steelers everywhere in their throwback.
- 11:52Oh, yeah, Sunday night. It's the first game in like 50
- 11:55years where both teams have yellow helmets, so that's
- 11:58something. Oh.
- 11:59Wow, this is a big game. I'm looking forward to.
- 12:01I'm looking forward to tonight and I'm looking forward to
- 12:03Sunday night just because I I want to see where the Steelers
- 12:07team is and I want to see where the Packer team is.
- 12:10This got this game's got some juice, Dave.
- 12:13Yeah, there's a quarterback of the Steelers that might make
- 12:15folks want to pay attention to. Yeah, no, it's, it's the game
- 12:20Packer fan circle. The schedule came out, obviously
- 12:22the first game against Aaron Rodgers, and I think it's a it's
- 12:25a tough spot for Green Bay to face the Pittsburgh team off of
- 12:28embarrassing loss with extra rest.
- 12:31Mike Tomlin tends to be a tough guy to beat when he's an
- 12:33underdog at home, and the Packers have been underwhelming
- 12:36on the road. So I just, I think it's a tough
- 12:39time to face a Pittsburgh team, especially a defense that wants
- 12:42to show, oh, they weren't as bad as they were last Thursday
- 12:44night. I can't think of the right
- 12:46adjective, but you're listening both locally, watching with my
- 12:50own eyes and and hearing on the national side, it feels like
- 12:53there's nobody that has a feel for this Packers team.
- 12:56There's a number one seed right now in the NFC, yet it doesn't
- 12:59feel like anybody's wrapping their arms around them.
- 13:01Is it the inconsistency what they've done on the road?
- 13:04What what is it? Because normally you'd think
- 13:06A-Team that's 41 and 1 and in control right now what they did
- 13:10in week one against the Lions, that everybody be in love with
- 13:12them and it's difficult to find that right now.
- 13:15Yeah, I think that's true. I think nobody really knows
- 13:18because they haven't looked really good for 60 minutes
- 13:21against competition. That just isn't great.
- 13:23And the schedule is going to get a whole lot tougher in the
- 13:25middle of November, and we'll know a lot more, you know, about
- 13:28this team. But I also think, you know,
- 13:30every team deals with injuries. Green Day has been dealing with
- 13:32injuries at a couple spots that caused them to really have to go
- 13:36deeper on the depth chart. And I think they might get
- 13:38Devante Wyatt back, which is huge for the middle of that
- 13:41defense. He's missed the last few games
- 13:43and they haven't looked the same since he went out.
- 13:46And you know, the offense has been dealing with an offensive
- 13:49line that's been revolving door receivers that can't stay
- 13:52healthy. So I just, I don't think we've
- 13:54seen since week one or two, you know, this Packer team the way
- 13:57that the the organization envisioned them looking.
- 14:00And I understand that's what happens in football.
- 14:01Guys get hurt. But I just think against
- 14:04middling competition, Green Bay's been scuffling along.
- 14:07And I think that's why, rightfully so, nobody really
- 14:10knows what this team is just yet.
- 14:12The Packers envision Michael Parsons having the game, the hip
- 14:16drop tackle notwithstanding, that he did when they acquired
- 14:19him by far his best game last weekend against their in
- 14:23Arizona. Yeah, I mean, he's never had a
- 14:26three set game, obviously. Well, he hasn't.
- 14:28I didn't for the Cowboys either. Wow.
- 14:31No, no. And then the three sacks he did
- 14:33have all came at just critical moments.
- 14:36First one was a third and goal that made him settle for a field
- 14:38goal. The last two were in the fourth
- 14:40quarter that again, we're in key spots.
- 14:43So he this timing was great. You know, they they chose not to
- 14:46double and triple and spend a ton of attention on him.
- 14:49He got a lot more one on ones that he's used to and obviously
- 14:52that tends to be a mismatch. So, yeah, a bit of a coming out
- 14:55party, you know, he's full go. He's playing all the snaps now.
- 14:59He's feeling more comfortable within this defense and then
- 15:02moving them around a little bit and letting him have some fun.
- 15:05So yeah, that was that was exactly what Packer fans hope to
- 15:08see when they traded for Micah Parsons.
- 15:10And it just gives you a taste for, I think, what might be to
- 15:13come. Aaron Rodgers said this
- 15:16yesterday, quote, I don't have any animosity towards the
- 15:19organization. This is not a revenge game for
- 15:22me. UN quote.
- 15:23Do we believe him, Dave? To a degree, I actually do I
- 15:28mean, I think everyone wants to paint the the revenge because
- 15:32that's who he is, right. Chip on the shoulder.
- 15:34He got run out of Green Bay. But you know, I'm one of those
- 15:37guys that that, you know, listens to what his team mates
- 15:40have always said about him. And he he was a great teammate.
- 15:43And Jordan Love gives him so much credit for the quarterback
- 15:46he is. He was classy, you know, when
- 15:48all that went down, Unlike Brett Favre when when Rodgers got
- 15:51drafted. I really do respect the way
- 15:54Rodgers handled his business. I mean, he's we know he's an odd
- 15:57duck and eccentric and he's weird and all that stuff.
- 15:59But I don't think he feels like I got to get these guys.
- 16:03I mean, believe it or not, there's only seven players on
- 16:06this roster that were on the last Packer team with Aaron
- 16:08Rodgers in 2022. They turned over this entire
- 16:11roster. So it's not like he's going to
- 16:14be going at these guys. I mean, he's got some friends
- 16:16still on this team. But but yeah, I mean, deep down,
- 16:19yet to see wannabe Green Bay on Sunday Night Football in a home
- 16:22game in prime time and show his best.
- 16:24Of course he does. And I expect him to have a
- 16:27productive night. You know, he does tend to play
- 16:29well again, zone defense, which Green Bay tends to play mostly.
- 16:32And he's going to get rid of the ball really quickly.
- 16:34That's what it takes to beat this pass rush.
- 16:37And that's why I really think if Devante, why it's back in the
- 16:40middle of that defense, two of us to provide that pass rush
- 16:43that they don't really get without him out there.
- 16:46It's it's a big check mark in the Packers favor.
- 16:48If he can't play, I don't give the defense a lot of chances of
- 16:52slowing Rogers down. It's going to be a fun chess
- 16:54match. And yeah, there's a revenge
- 16:55factor, but I don't think it's something he's just circled and
- 16:58and waiting for for this game to happen.
- 17:01Last thing for me, Dave, I watched the team last week.
- 17:03Thankfully the backup kicker stunk as they as Denver escaped.
- 17:08You guys have had a backup kicker and you've been Brandon
- 17:11McManus, pretty decorated kicker throughout his career.
- 17:13I mean, the Jacksonville thing, obviously that didn't end well
- 17:16there. But he's got a Super Bowl ring
- 17:18and he's been hurt. And I did not know.
- 17:20And I don't even know if I can say Havarisus Havarisic.
- 17:24Is that how we say his name? But the guy they brought in to
- 17:27replace McManus, he's been really good In an era where you
- 17:31don't find backup kickers all the time that are really good.
- 17:34They got a decision to make when McManus is healthy.
- 17:37Maybe. Yeah, it's a big talker in
- 17:39Packer Nation this week. Lucas Haversick, who did have a
- 17:42cup of coffee with the Rams a couple years ago, was getting
- 17:45his license to be a substitute teacher in Creed a few weeks ago
- 17:48when Green Bay made the call. And you know that that really
- 17:51did turn the game last week when Green Bay gets the ball back
- 17:54with 7 seconds left in the half and decides to try to run a
- 17:56play, get 22 yards to dodge and suddenly you try Haversick out
- 18:01for a 61 yard field goal and he knocks it in to cut the lead to
- 18:04seven and provide a bit of momentum.
- 18:07He's been out, Danny, he hasn't missed a kick.
- 18:08He's 26. They've paid McManus the money.
- 18:12I mean, it's I would hang on to McManus because he's proven in a
- 18:16long career to be a guy you could trust in the playoffs.
- 18:19But boy, oh boy, there's talk about maybe they keep both these
- 18:22guys on the roster. I don't know if McManus is going
- 18:25to play this week. He was not out of practice
- 18:27Wednesday. Lafleur thought he'd be out
- 18:29kicking today, but they haven't practiced yet.
- 18:32It's an interesting talker. Maybe they spent a trade to get
- 18:36a 6th or 7th rounder from a desperate team and get something
- 18:39for him, but he's been a revelation.
- 18:41And yeah, that is something that Packer Nation's kicking around
- 18:44this week. What do you do with Brandon
- 18:46McManus? Because average has been money
- 18:48so far, Matthew. Golden Finally, the Packers went
- 18:51out and got a shiny object for their quarterback out of Texas,
- 18:54the speedster still without a touchdown.
- 18:56He's been relatively productive, though certainly hasn't turned
- 19:00into a star right away in his career.
- 19:02We're what, six games into this one?
- 19:04But where do we look at Matthew Golden right now?
- 19:07And what kind of upside is still there for him, at least for the
- 19:10rest of this season? Yeah, you've touched on a hot
- 19:12spot with me, Trent. I'm annoyed by the lack of
- 19:15targets to Matthew Golden, 4 targets last Sunday, 3 came in
- 19:20the opening drive. He caught all four of those
- 19:22targets, by the way. It's not just the speed and the
- 19:25route running. He's got great hands and love,
- 19:27obviously. Trust him.
- 19:28He's gone to him this season. Key 4th down situations.
- 19:32This is a game where the Packers will not have Dantavion Wix
- 19:36Christian Watson says he wants to play.
- 19:38I'd be shocked if Green Bay puts him on that playing surface in
- 19:42Pittsburgh where Jordy Nelson tore his ACL.
- 19:46I just think they're going to be so thin a wide receiver Sunday.
- 19:49It's a time to start feeding the ball to Matthew Golden.
- 19:51I understand why Dobbs and Tucker Kraft are going to get
- 19:54the most targets, but you've got a shiny toy that does things
- 19:58that nobody else on your roster could do it.
- 20:00I don't think 4 targets is enough.
- 20:02I think if he was getting targeted more, you'd be hearing
- 20:04about him just like you are at Buca and some of the.
- 20:07Other productive rookie receivers.
- 20:09I think Golden's going to be a star in this league.
- 20:11I don't think rebate likes to feature wide receivers that
- 20:13much. It's more about just buying the
- 20:15open guy. They haven't had a talent like
- 20:17him. He needs to be targeted more
- 20:19often and I will be stunned if he doesn't get at least 7-8
- 20:22targets this Sunday night in light of the.
- 20:25Health of that wide. Receiver room right now.
- 20:27There's a little nugget for you fantasy players out there as
- 20:30they may be taking the training wheels off Dave.
- 20:33sinicanzonecoverage.com. KFAN Sunday morning Packer
- 20:36preview year #30 Packer Preview Sunday morning 7:00 AM.
- 20:40Dave. Yes, until go for season ends
- 20:43when I get moved to 8:00, but for now we're right and early at
- 20:467:00. Or anywhere or anytime rather on
- 20:48the iheart app. Thanks for what you do for us,
- 20:50Dave. We'll talk to you next week.
- 20:51Appreciate it. Yep.
- 20:53Thanks guys. Take care.
- 20:54Good to talk to you, Dave. sinekanzonecoverage.com and KFAN
- 20:58up in the Twin Cities Packer Preview Sunday mornings at 7:00
- 21:03AM. You have a feel.
- 21:03For the game. Packers favored field goal,
- 21:06roughly. Yeah, I like Green Bay.
- 21:08I just it's because I don't like Pittsburgh.
- 21:10Yeah, don't trust Pittsburgh. No, not at all.
- 21:13Not at all. Cincinnati win the division?
- 21:17Maybe no. Too much Baltimore?
- 21:21The favorite to do so? Or if they're not, they're right
- 21:23behind Pittsburgh. It's.
- 21:24Just wild. It truly is.
- 21:26Stephen M Sipple joins us here we go.
- 21:28Well, not so fast, Trent Condon, because before we do that, we've
- 21:32got to go to kx&o.com. This nationwide keyword contest
- 21:36is wide open right now. Head to KX and o.com.
- 21:38The pop up box will appear. Type the keyword win win at KX
- 21:43and o.com. Your chance to win $1000.
- 21:46KX and o.com in our nationwide contest sit next Bellerin
- 21:51Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:55It's time for SIP. Stephen M Simple talks with
- 22:01myself and Ken on Nebraska. Football.
- 22:03I mean, I have a radio show, we have callers.
- 22:05I pay attention to my Twitter notifications and all that.
- 22:09There's definitely some frustration.
- 22:11We talk Cornhuskers, and you never know what else is going to
- 22:14come up with 30 years on the Nebraska beat.
- 22:20Here's Steven M Simple. As long as they're paying me to
- 22:22talk, I'm just going to keep doing it.
- 22:25I'm Lori Condon. Welcome back.
- 22:26It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:28Des Moines Sports Station One O 6.3 KX&O.
- 22:31Well, I've talked to SIP for 30 years now during the football
- 22:35seasons, once a week for 30 years.
- 22:38I'm not sure there's been a more anticipated simple segment than
- 22:41this one we're about to embark on.
- 22:43And away we go. Hello, Steven M Simple.
- 22:45How are you? I'm doing good.
- 22:48How are you guys? Doing doing OK, Trent, go ahead.
- 22:51All right, zip. So last week, your parting shot
- 22:56as you're making your way through God's country, N Iowa,
- 22:58you're hanging out in Clear Lake and stop by the Surf Ballroom.
- 23:01But before that, you tell us that Braska's going to win this
- 23:0414213. I tried to warn you.
- 23:07That's. Why I I, I tried to help you
- 23:09pump your brakes a little bit, said it was a good match up.
- 23:12And then we see the way that it lays out, you know, sip one
- 23:16thing that I give you a hard time from time to time is your
- 23:19brethren in the media and those expectations that sometimes
- 23:23maybe feel like they swell the take the fan base along with
- 23:26them and expectations that aren't realistic.
- 23:28And I I thought it was another example to say that they could
- 23:31go up there and win the game. Sure, but a team you lost four
- 23:34straight. It's a blueprint that's worked
- 23:36against Nebraska. It just, it felt like another
- 23:38one of those when people here, certainly in the state of Iowa,
- 23:42look at Nebraska and say what are they thinking?
- 23:45That was another example to me last week.
- 23:48All right. I hope they don't use me as the
- 23:52acid test. I mean, that would be, I was
- 23:55reckless on that prediction. It was, it was reckless.
- 23:59It was, I just got off the phone with a parent of one of the
- 24:02players and it was early. I, I'm not making excuses here.
- 24:05I did it early in the week after I'd looked at Minnesota closely
- 24:10and I thought they don't have. They're not very athletic in the
- 24:13back end. They're not running the ball at
- 24:17all. They hadn't been.
- 24:20They're not. I wasn't too worried about the
- 24:23pass rush and I just thought Nebraska be able to run and
- 24:27throw. That's what I told you guys.
- 24:28I thought they'd be able to run and throw well.
- 24:31They really didn't do either very well.
- 24:33They ran a little bit, 14 carries for 63.
- 24:37Yards. For Emma Johnson.
- 24:40But the pocket collapsed in an alarming rate in a passing game.
- 24:45So that was reckless. And you're right, it's I'm not.
- 24:52Now, hardly anybody here predicted predicted Minnesota to
- 24:57win. I don't know that anybody in our
- 24:58media corps did now, but I want to be clear, I was the outlier
- 25:04in predicting that kind of score.
- 25:06The other, the other scores were responsible.
- 25:09Mine was irresponsible. What's SIP?
- 25:13I don't know how they fixed the offensive line.
- 25:15I mean, 9 sacks this past week against the Minnesota outfit
- 25:18that hadn't been getting to the quarterback.
- 25:20I mean, there's games where you give up 546 I the offensive
- 25:25line, it's no better than it was when they were in the Big 12.
- 25:28I don't think SIP, I think that's fair to say that this
- 25:31unit is grossly underachieving and I don't know how you can fix
- 25:36it seven games into the season. You know what they are and it's
- 25:42a pretty now you don't want to put too much into one game as it
- 25:49as it relates to the entire team.
- 25:52The SAC issue isn't just one game.
- 25:56They, I mean, people forget they gave up three sacks against
- 25:59Cincinnati, then Michigan got 7 sacks, Michigan State got 5.
- 26:06And and then now they, they held off Maryland, Maryland only had
- 26:10one. But then then everything went
- 26:13wrong against Minnesota and there were nine and ruled that
- 26:19and it's Monday, press office said this was maybe the
- 26:23statement that got me more than anything, he said.
- 26:26It was a memorable Monday press conference, he said to Dylan.
- 26:33SIP, You broke up. SIP.
- 26:36Hello. Uh oh.
- 26:39Phone lines got him. I get his sip.
- 26:42Can you hear us? We'll try him back.
- 26:45Let's try him back. I want to hear what Matt Rule
- 26:47said. They got sip a little hot under
- 26:49the collar. Sip does these every Thursday.
- 26:53Seemingly he's in a different part of Nebraska speaking to a a
- 26:57club. I don't know if it's a Husker
- 26:58club or Lions group or whatever. You know, they have the the
- 27:01luncheon, the Turkey here, the the the pot roast and the
- 27:05potatoes and gets up and does a little talk on the team and he's
- 27:09driving back through rural Nebraska where apparently the
- 27:11phone service not quite up the par.
- 27:14All right, Sip Sir, you're about to say Monday press conference.
- 27:17Matt Rules said what that got under your skin.
- 27:20That's where you broke up. Just no, not under my skin.
- 27:24It was just very revealing. He said that, you know, Nebraska
- 27:27gave up nine sacks. He said it could have been four
- 27:29or five more. But Dylan Rayola alluded 4 or
- 27:33five more. And that's when I said to him,
- 27:36like, wait a second. He gave up nine, and it could
- 27:39have been like 12 or 13. And what I was saying is it
- 27:46wasn't like Nebraska had a lot of plays.
- 27:48I think they ran 50 to. Like. 5055 plays.
- 27:53So think, think about the ratio. You know they weren't Yeah, it
- 27:57was a disaster. Now here's what I'd say too.
- 28:00The company line here has been it's not just an O line issue
- 28:06and I believe that I I believe the company line.
- 28:09Emmett Johnson was responsible for three of the sacks, just
- 28:13missed assignments, got beat one on his one-on-one blocking one
- 28:17time. Dylan held the ball two or three
- 28:23times. I so I'd say 4 of the sacks were
- 28:30on the line and the rest were just other issues.
- 28:34So it is I believe their company line now gets Michigan.
- 28:39It was on the tackle, the offensive tackle, they were the
- 28:43problem. Michigan State, Dylan was
- 28:45holding the ball too much. They're trying to throw it down
- 28:48field. He held the ball too much.
- 28:51In this case, it was everything like everything went wrong.
- 28:55So bad deal. Bad deal for Nebraska.
- 28:58Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln, you
- 29:01mentioned Rayola and holding the ball too long.
- 29:04It just, you watch him throughout the course of 60
- 29:06minutes and they'll have those wild plays.
- 29:08He had two of them against Minnesota.
- 29:09Just absolute eye opening. There's few guys in college
- 29:12football that can make it and then there's another dozen
- 29:15plays. What in God's name is he
- 29:16thinking? What is he trying to do?
- 29:18Why is it that he's always trying to be spectacular, that
- 29:22he just for whatever reason, it's not in him yet, just to
- 29:26make the makeables? Because there's just too many
- 29:28times he's way too inconsistent. Take us a little bit deeper into
- 29:31the Nebraska QB. I.
- 29:34I mean, that's the nature of the conversations around here.
- 29:39I think largely he's affected by this pass rush conversation.
- 29:45It's not a one game thing, as I detailed.
- 29:49And it's not just that he's it's not just the fact he's under
- 29:53constant duress. What they don't.
- 29:56I mean, if I was going to critique him, I love to play the
- 29:59coach thing, right? If I was coaching, I'd I love
- 30:02doing this. I would see.
- 30:04I took the issue with something Dana Holger said.
- 30:08He's the play caller. He said I have to find ways to
- 30:12get Dylan comfortable because when he's comfortable, he's one
- 30:15of the best quarterbacks in America.
- 30:17If I if Dana was riding with me in the truck right here, I'd say
- 30:22Dana, you know quarterbacks aren't, they don't, they don't.
- 30:25There's not many plays where they drop back three-step drop,
- 30:29five step drop, whatever it is and encounter just pure
- 30:33cleanliness. I would emphasize you have to
- 30:37operate uncomfortable uncomfortably.
- 30:40You have to be able to do that. I was joking on our show here
- 30:44that if I it was me, I would do crazy things in practice to make
- 30:49him feel uncomfortable. I'd throw stuff at him, I'd hit
- 30:52him with a broom. I'd do whatever.
- 30:55I just got to make him feel incredibly uncomfortable and
- 30:59still be able to deliver. I see it all the time in both
- 31:02the NFL and college. The best guys can operate.
- 31:07When it's all collapsed and it doesn't, it doesn't look right,
- 31:11but they still they still can operate.
- 31:14Dylan has a hard time with that for whatever reason.
- 31:17So how big is this game against Northwestern this week?
- 31:19When you match up Bronze and rules records, they're almost
- 31:23identical. 17 and 15 this far. Bronze got one more win in the
- 31:28Big 10 than rule does. How important is this game?
- 31:32In my mind, it's really important because here's why.
- 31:35What? You know, we we do this thing,
- 31:37you guys do it. I'm sure everybody does it.
- 31:39College football is all about overreacting, right?
- 31:41That's what Hell yeah. Fun.
- 31:43Yeah, it's fun to react. Nebraska won two straight games
- 31:47and a lot of talk around here just going into the Minnesota
- 31:50game was wow, this program's making progress.
- 31:54It it, it looks good. I mean, this is they're winning
- 31:57close games now that they that they lost for so many years.
- 32:01And there's there's a lot that looks pretty good.
- 32:03They have a couple edge rushers that are good.
- 32:06The secondary is real good. The special teams is ranked
- 32:10second in the nation and in the overall analytics on PFF.
- 32:15So there's a lot going well now why?
- 32:18What's the importance of this game?
- 32:20Just is Minnesota an aberration? Was it just a bad day at the
- 32:24office? Was it just wasn't didn't show
- 32:28up. Now, if if they come back and
- 32:31beat Northwestern, I mean just beat them.
- 32:34You know, I'm not expecting South Point.
- 32:36Then you say, well, they're six and two.
- 32:39They're bowl eligible. They have winnable games ahead
- 32:42of them as long as they play this one.
- 32:43Well, that's what it means to me.
- 32:45Now, if they lose and it looks anything like Minnesota, then
- 32:50you start really questioning whether rules getting it done
- 32:53here, right? It does.
- 32:56You wonder, right. So that's what it means to me.
- 32:59Sip I had so much fun. I'm wrapping up my broadcast on
- 33:04Friday night calling high school football and the tweets we're
- 33:06rolling in, the texts we're rolling in.
- 33:09And then this is one thing that I also forgot SIP is you told us
- 33:12before the season began, it wasn't just your 4213 prediction
- 33:16against the gulfs. It was that you said that
- 33:18Nebraska is going to have a better efforts aligned in Iowa.
- 33:21How's that going for the Huskers I?
- 33:24Don't know I told you off there. I watch one series of Iowa, Penn
- 33:28State and thought, oh God, Iowa's offensive line looks like
- 33:32it could ball Nebraska right. One series.
- 33:34I was like, oh geez, terrible. No, that was I've made some
- 33:39incredibly bad prognostications this fall that I'm dialing it
- 33:43back. One of them that doesn't doesn't
- 33:45even register with you guys. You don't care.
- 33:47But I, I said on my show, Kansas looks like they have an SEC
- 33:51level defense. They've given a 600 yard squat.
- 33:56I mean, I just got to and yeah, I did say multiple times, I
- 34:00think the offensive line, I didn't say it was the strength
- 34:03of Nebraska's team, but I said it could be a strength and it's
- 34:07yeah, it's been terrible. So I don't I'm dialing back on
- 34:10predictions. There's nothing worse than an
- 34:13audience member with a memory as you.
- 34:16We we don't do so. Yeah, good stuff, Steven.
- 34:18I'm great stuff, pal. Thanks for doing this, as
- 34:20always. We will speak with you next
- 34:23week. What do you got next week?
- 34:25Tough one next week. Oh, USC.
- 34:26Hello. Yeah, that'll be fun.
- 34:30USC here tonight, Game 630. Game.
- 34:32Oh, that's the NBC special, right?
- 34:35Yeah, yeah, Good stuff. So thank you, bud.
- 34:37Appreciate you coming on. All right.
- 34:39Thanks. Guys, Yep, good to talk to
- 34:41Stephen M Simple Husker illustrated part of On three
- 34:44Media on three Media for SIP is he takes a look back at 42 to
- 34:4913. I bought it.
- 34:50I know you did in. Our picks.
- 34:51I didn't say 4213, but I thought Sip's got a pretty good read.
- 34:56Yeah, not so much. That's.
- 34:57So much, not so much. And sip good-natured about it.
- 35:01He is of. Course he is.
- 35:02Took his medicine, Yeah. Sounds like he's taking quite a
- 35:04bit of medicine this season. All right, it's 145.
- 35:08Our plays, our trench plays of the day, Circus sports sponsor
- 35:11those. Is it a coincidence that this
- 35:13gambling story broke this morning and Shohei Otani left
- 35:16the country? Oh, no, no, no, no.
- 35:19Saw that on Twitter, that's pretty good.
- 35:22Is right. That's not what baseball needs
- 35:24right now. No, I know that's the last thing
- 35:25of these, but I thought, you know, whoever came up with that?
- 35:27There's a pretty witty 145. Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports
- 35:31Radio Network. I'm Millory Condon.
- 35:34Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network Trenton, Ken with you.
- 35:37Our final segment here on a Thursday off the bench, top of
- 35:40the hour, Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts, 2 until 5 overtime Iowa
- 35:45tonight at 5:00. Well, we do have, of course, the
- 35:49Thursday Night Football, but is not Westwood ones call tonight.
- 35:53It's our relationship with the Vikings.
- 35:55Paul Allen and the Viking Radio Network will bring you the call
- 35:58tonight, the Vikings and Chargers.
- 36:00The pregame show starts right at 6:00, so right the conclusion of
- 36:04overtime. Iowa.
- 36:05Off we go to Sofi Stadium and PA and company will take you until
- 36:10the end of that game. 3 1/2 is the numbers.
- 36:13Are you playing that? What are you watch?
- 36:15What are you watching and wagering on this evening?
- 36:17So we have undefeated now in the NBA.
- 36:21We are three and O against the NBA.
- 36:22Yeah, you. Quit while you're ahead.
- 36:24Well. Probably I'll I'll get to it
- 36:25again in April. Now there'll be some other
- 36:27moments, but college basketball right around the corner.
- 36:29But I couldn't find anything tonight.
- 36:30Only two games. I'm one and O in hockey hit last
- 36:34night. What'd you play the Devils
- 36:35against the Wild? That was a good one.
- 36:37And that came both with a backup goalie.
- 36:41And that's I think why I got the good price on that one.
- 36:43Only -122 in jersey. But nothing there, nothing in
- 36:47the NBA. There is a college football game
- 36:49tonight. It is one in six South Alabama
- 36:53against one in six. Georgia State didn't find an
- 36:56angle in that one. So I'm just playing the
- 36:58Chargers. I laid the Midas 120 and grabbed
- 37:01the three. There are three and a halfs in
- 37:02the market, but I laid the extra juice and just laid the fee.
- 37:05The three with the Chargers? Short week, Yep.
- 37:09Carson Wentz? Yep.
- 37:10Versus Justin Herbert must. Win for both sides.
- 37:14Yeah, I'll take the team at home on the short week.
- 37:16Now. There'll be a ton of Vikings
- 37:17fans out there. Sure.
- 37:19This is going to be another one of those trips, Minnesota.
- 37:22What are those? Every charger home games.
- 37:24But the Vikings are always one of those sneaky fan bases.
- 37:27Travels even better, I think then maybe the national
- 37:30reputation is. Spend the weekend out in LA
- 37:32Little. California action reputation is
- 37:35there. They will not be happy with the
- 37:37result of this one. Chargers.
- 37:38Will be there. I'm with you trying to think
- 37:40you're on the right side. We'll see how it goes.
- 37:42Obviously I'd love the Vikings to make a playoff.
- 37:44It's better for business here for us.
- 37:46The more the regional teams that qualify for post season, the
- 37:49better. Last time they in that stadium,
- 37:52although against a different Los Angeles team, certainly did not
