Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Well, hey Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo Territory
- 0:09Speaker 1: on Mike D. Giovanni, former Ela Times Baseball writer, joined
- 0:12Speaker 1: by Mark Trumbo, my regular co host and former Angel slugger.
- 0:15Speaker 1: And if you're watching us on YouTube, you can see
- 0:17Speaker 1: we have a very special guest today, Jim Palmer, the
- 0:21Speaker 1: Hall of Fame pitcher, the three time Cy Young Award winner,
- 0:24Speaker 1: the three time World Series champion, h and broadcast analysts
- 0:29Speaker 1: for the Baltimore Orioles. Jim, really appreciate you joining us today.
- 0:33Speaker 2: How you going, I'm good. Thanks that nice to be
- 0:36Speaker 2: with you.
- 0:37Speaker 1: All right, Really appreciate it. So we thought, in the
- 0:40Speaker 1: wake of the Angels sell off at the trade deadline,
- 0:43Speaker 1: it would be interesting to examine the challenges for teams
- 0:46Speaker 1: that are quote unquote playing out the string. How guys
- 0:50Speaker 1: approached the final two months of a season in which
- 0:53Speaker 1: they had nothing to play for. Now, Jim Palmer has
- 0:57Speaker 1: never experienced that as a player. This is hard.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I looked it up. I couldn't believe this.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Jim.
- 1:01Speaker 1: The Orioles had one losing season in your twenty two
- 1:05Speaker 1: years in Baltimore, But as an Oriols TV analyst, there's
- 1:09Speaker 1: no better example. Than twenty eighteen. The Orioles were thirty
- 1:13Speaker 1: two and seventy five and forty two games back on
- 1:15Speaker 1: July thirty first, and they traded away a big chunk
- 1:18Speaker 1: of the MLB roster, including Manny Machado, Zach Britton, Kevin Gossman,
- 1:26Speaker 1: Jonathan Shoop and others in a matter of days. Now
- 1:31Speaker 1: Jim as a broadcaster and a franchise icon. What was
- 1:34Speaker 1: that period like inside the organization and especially for the
- 1:38Speaker 1: fan base.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Well, obviously the fan base wasn't happy. I mean, this
- 1:42Speaker 2: was the team, you know that. Well twenty fourteen and
- 1:47Speaker 2: again Mark wasn't there. I think Mark Urrud did what
- 1:50Speaker 2: twenty and sixteen when he led the American leage at
- 1:53Speaker 2: home runs with forty seven. But in the club, you know,
- 1:56Speaker 2: so what they were ninety six and sixty sixty two
- 1:59Speaker 2: thousand in fourteen fifteen, eighty one and eighty one seen,
- 2:03Speaker 2: eighty nine and seventy three marks first year there, and
- 2:06Speaker 2: then progressively if you look, I mean, seventy five and
- 2:09Speaker 2: eighty seven, and then they would end up what forty seven,
- 2:11Speaker 2: one hundred and fifteen, Yeah, fifteen. I don't think he
- 2:15Speaker 2: really wanted to sign in Baltimore even you know, years earlier,
- 2:19Speaker 2: Dan Duquett was the general manager. He said, do you
- 2:20Speaker 2: think Manny would what's sign an extension? I go, well,
- 2:24Speaker 2: I'll go ask him. So early on. This is not
- 2:28Speaker 2: twenty eighteen, this is like, you know, he's you know,
- 2:31Speaker 2: I had some knee problems. He had both Lika vincent
- 2:33Speaker 2: is right and left knee fixed by I think alatrosh elatrosh.
- 2:37Speaker 2: And I went down the cage. I said, hey, would
- 2:40Speaker 2: you sign the sentient? He said, of course. But again,
- 2:42Speaker 2: when you go into your free agent year, things changed
- 2:46Speaker 2: and guys are making more money and whatever. So this
- 2:48Speaker 2: is a club that got aggressively worse. And Mark was there.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I mean, I mean I did four and thirty two
- 2:53Speaker 2: finishes with the Oarls. I did fourteen straight losing years,
- 2:57Speaker 2: you know, from like nineteen eighty nine all the way
- 2:59Speaker 2: till when Buck Showwater came, I think, and came what
- 3:02Speaker 2: twenty eleven, had their first winning year in twenty and twelve.
- 3:06Speaker 2: So obviously, when you're as good as the Ools were,
- 3:10Speaker 2: you know, now, as they were in ninety you know
- 3:12Speaker 2: in two thousand, what.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Ninety seven, you're in the playoffs.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Yeah, right, exactly. Well, I mean go way back, they
- 3:19Speaker 2: had an also team, so again, you know, the fan
- 3:21Speaker 2: expected him to be better than they were. But Dan
- 3:24Speaker 2: du Kent was saying, Okay, we're not winning. I mean,
- 3:27Speaker 2: like I said, we ended up forty seven and a
- 3:28Speaker 2: hundred and fifteen. Let's get the best deals we can.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I'm not really sure they did, because they probably waited
- 3:35Speaker 2: a year long longer to trade Manny Machado than they
- 3:37Speaker 2: should have.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Yeah, that's always a really tough one that Manny I
- 3:43Speaker 4: think one of the most understood players in the game.
- 3:46Speaker 4: He was an excellent teammate and I just wanted to
- 3:49Speaker 4: get that part in there. This is the first time
- 3:53Speaker 4: the Angels have really leaned into people don't like to
- 3:56Speaker 4: use the R word, but you know, you get walks
- 3:59Speaker 4: like a duck and you gotta call.
- 4:01Speaker 2: It a duck.
- 4:02Speaker 4: So what I'm wondering, if you can help the fans,
- 4:05Speaker 4: what what does a rebuild feel like for for the players,
- 4:10Speaker 4: for the broadcasters, for you know, people that are day
- 4:16Speaker 4: to day involved having to kind of, you know, put
- 4:19Speaker 4: their best effort forward knowing the wins aren't aren't going
- 4:21Speaker 4: to pile up.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Well obviously, for the fans, I think it gives them hope.
- 4:25Speaker 2: I mean the oil is a perfect example. Michaelias comes
- 4:28Speaker 2: after the forty seven and one hundred and fifteen you know,
- 4:32Speaker 2: one lost record in twenty eighteen, so he comes to
- 4:35Speaker 2: twenty nineteen and he announces, Hey, we're going to do
- 4:39Speaker 2: a rebuild, and how are we going to do that?
- 4:41Speaker 2: We're we're not going to be as bad as forty
- 4:44Speaker 2: seven and one hundred and fifteen. Well, we're going to
- 4:48Speaker 2: kind of do what they did down in Houston, where
- 4:51Speaker 2: you know you're going to hope, hopefully you'll play poorly.
- 4:53Speaker 2: You get the draft high. Allie Rushman, who just got
- 4:56Speaker 2: you know, traded up to Boston, was the first draft
- 4:58Speaker 2: choice two thousand nineteen. I had a good friend with
- 5:02Speaker 2: one of the Oiel scouts. He begged them take Bobby,
- 5:06Speaker 2: not that Allie's not going to be a good player,
- 5:08Speaker 2: but Bobby went junior three years younger. A player is
- 5:13Speaker 2: going to play one hundred and fifty five, two hundred
- 5:15Speaker 2: and sixty games a year based on catcher, maybe catching
- 5:18Speaker 2: one hundred, one hundred and twenty five and probably more signable.
- 5:22Speaker 2: And of course we know how good Wit is. But
- 5:24Speaker 2: they chose Adlie and you know when when Adley came
- 5:27Speaker 2: in twenty twenty two, that was kind of at least
- 5:31Speaker 2: and I think in the fans' minds and really the
- 5:32Speaker 2: Oriols that this team was going to get better. And
- 5:35Speaker 2: he really played well in twenty two, twenty three, all
- 5:38Speaker 2: the way up to the All Star break in twenty four.
- 5:41Speaker 2: I don't know if he had injuries, but all of
- 5:42Speaker 2: a sudden he struggled. Last year, he had won thirty
- 5:45Speaker 2: three with runners in scoring position. The league average is
- 5:47Speaker 2: about two fifty one, so again there was something going on.
- 5:51Speaker 2: This year. He was having a pretty good year, and
- 5:53Speaker 2: the word is I don't know. You know that he
- 5:56Speaker 2: wasn't going to sign an extension. The writer called me
- 5:58Speaker 2: and he said, do you know for a fact? I
- 6:00Speaker 2: said no. I said, why don't you ask the GM
- 6:03Speaker 2: Micha Eliason. He wouldn't imp because I think if he did,
- 6:07Speaker 2: he would set up pressent. Because Dotter Henderson two years
- 6:10Speaker 2: from now, when he's guy, has another year on his
- 6:11Speaker 2: contract before he become a free agent. You're going to go, well,
- 6:15Speaker 2: he's going to trade him. So what if you're an
- 6:17Speaker 2: Oriol fan or and you know, again, they trade Adlie
- 6:20Speaker 2: Ruschman and they're only it's a false god as far
- 6:23Speaker 2: as I'm concerned, when you're not playing well. But they're
- 6:25Speaker 2: only two and a half games out of the wild Cards,
- 6:28Speaker 2: so they're still in the race, even though to do that,
- 6:31Speaker 2: I think you had to play. And they're at eleven
- 6:33Speaker 2: and what I think they're fifteen or sixteen and ten
- 6:37Speaker 2: in their last twenty six games, so they're playing better.
- 6:40Speaker 2: But again the Red Sox what twenty three and five
- 6:44Speaker 2: except Piculos, and you know we helped. We made four
- 6:48Speaker 2: eras first night in Boston. They should have ended the
- 6:51Speaker 2: wind Street but we didn't. So yeah, I mean, Mark,
- 6:54Speaker 2: you know as well as I you were there in
- 6:56Speaker 2: twenty eighteen. It's it's kind of depressing in one sense.
- 6:59Speaker 2: But if you're play and you get replaced, just to
- 7:02Speaker 2: think of the opportunity last night against the Angels, Kate
- 7:06Speaker 2: Povitch pitched against one of my favorite young pitchers, you know,
- 7:09Speaker 2: in Grayson Ron Reguez. Except obviously we know you have
- 7:12Speaker 2: to be able to stay healthy, so it gives all
- 7:15Speaker 2: the young players opportunities, so they probably look at it
- 7:18Speaker 2: a little more positively. But again, if you're broadcasting, you're
- 7:21Speaker 2: still I mean, you're preparing for the game, you're hoping
- 7:23Speaker 2: they win there? Just why are people want to TV
- 7:26Speaker 2: or Orial TV? They went.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Now Mark the Orioles went fifteen and forty in August
- 7:35Speaker 1: and September of twenty eighteen. Do you remember what Camden yard?
- 7:38Speaker 1: I mean, Candon Yard is one of my favorite plays
- 7:40Speaker 1: to watch baseball throughout the nineties. Places just rocking. This
- 7:45Speaker 1: is great atmosphere, playoff atmosphere every night. What do you
- 7:50Speaker 1: recall it being like those last two months of twenty eighteen?
- 7:56Speaker 3: The on field play was at fault.
- 7:58Speaker 4: I mean, the fans continue to support, maybe the stands
- 8:03Speaker 4: weren't quite as crowded as they would be for a
- 8:07Speaker 4: team playing significantly better. But as a player, you do
- 8:11Speaker 4: the best you can, and I took a lot of
- 8:12Speaker 4: pride in giving my best effort despite the fact the
- 8:16Speaker 4: team wasn't doing well. It looks even worse if you
- 8:19Speaker 4: just are pouting and quitting. It's bad enough already, don't
- 8:24Speaker 4: make it worse. And for a lot of you know,
- 8:27Speaker 4: in my situation, I was an older player, had signed
- 8:30Speaker 4: a contract and wanted to honor that contract, and I
- 8:33Speaker 4: felt like because of that, there was nothing else to
- 8:37Speaker 4: do but give my best effort. If we happen to
- 8:40Speaker 4: rack up, you know, another loss that night, you just
- 8:43Speaker 4: kind of have to eat it. Unfortunately, what happens on
- 8:46Speaker 4: teams that are really bad, losing gets too familiar and
- 8:50Speaker 4: it doesn't sting. And when it doesn't sting, I think
- 8:53Speaker 4: that's a big deal. Now, in Jim's case, I don't
- 8:56Speaker 4: think you played on too many teams that were under
- 8:58Speaker 4: five hundred. Maybe it was astounding when I looked at
- 9:02Speaker 4: the Orioles records while you were a player there. Yeah, well,
- 9:07Speaker 4: I mean I liked, well, I lucked out because I
- 9:09Speaker 4: was a couple of years before the draft, and you know,
- 9:12Speaker 4: Houston offered me more money.
- 9:14Speaker 2: I ended up siding with the Oriels at night. Ten
- 9:15Speaker 2: teams called the next day. But I think I made
- 9:18Speaker 2: the right decision.
- 9:19Speaker 3: You know.
- 9:21Speaker 2: You know six World Series, we won three of them,
- 9:23Speaker 2: I mean, even the ones we lost, other than the
- 9:25Speaker 2: Mets series, where I mean it's just bad experience because
- 9:29Speaker 2: you know, on fire breaks, they were obviously the amazing
- 9:33Speaker 2: mess so they were a good team. But the two
- 9:35Speaker 2: series and seventy one and seventy nine against the Pirates,
- 9:38Speaker 2: they were great. You know, seven game World Series, you
- 9:40Speaker 2: lose two to one, you lose I think five to
- 9:42Speaker 2: one in the seventy nine World Series on the final day,
- 9:45Speaker 2: so you know, yeah, I was. I was really lucky.
- 9:47Speaker 2: And then, you know, how do you win many games
- 9:50Speaker 2: as I did? You play on good teams, which is
- 9:52Speaker 2: why I never left. I mean, I knew that all
- 9:54Speaker 2: I had to do is try to figure out how
- 9:56Speaker 2: to stay healthy, be able to go out there thirty
- 9:58Speaker 2: eight thirty nine, forty t times a year, and I
- 10:01Speaker 2: was gonna win a lot of games because we did
- 10:03Speaker 2: a lot of things, you know, right, And to Mark's point,
- 10:07Speaker 2: teams that don't they beat themselves, they lose the one
- 10:10Speaker 2: run games. They're you know, they don't expect to win.
- 10:13Speaker 2: So you do play for yourself, you know. The late
- 10:16Speaker 2: Mike flag and used to always say when we would
- 10:18Speaker 2: trade for a guy that came from a losing team,
- 10:20Speaker 2: you said, you just can see he does not play
- 10:22Speaker 2: for the name on the family the uniform. They're used
- 10:25Speaker 2: to playing for the team that's you know, their name
- 10:28Speaker 2: on the back of the uniform, which with themselves, and
- 10:30Speaker 2: that's kind of what losing teams it kind of it
- 10:34Speaker 2: kind of fosters that in a sense, and that that's
- 10:36Speaker 2: not the way you play the game.
- 10:38Speaker 1: We're gonna take a quick break for a word from
- 10:39Speaker 1: more sponsors, and when we get back, we're going to
- 10:42Speaker 1: talk a little more about this Abley Rushman deal for
- 10:45Speaker 1: the Organs.
- 10:46Speaker 5: This is that time of year, aj It is Baseball's
- 10:49Speaker 5: time to shine, and it is see geeks time to
- 10:53Speaker 5: shine with MLB tickets and finding the best pricing, seating
- 10:58Speaker 5: and games that are even sold out available on sea geek.
- 11:02Speaker 6: Absolutely if you want to go to the biggest matchups
- 11:05Speaker 6: coming up. We have Yankees Cubs coming up. Where's Yankees
- 11:07Speaker 6: red Sox? That means stuff. Again, there's some big moments
- 11:10Speaker 6: that are coming up here in the as the penachases
- 11:13Speaker 6: really heat up. Go to Cike can find those green
- 11:15Speaker 6: tickets with the best deals and get yourself out to
- 11:18Speaker 6: an MLB game.
- 11:19Speaker 5: Yeah, and they're straightforward with you. They will actually put
- 11:22Speaker 5: a red dot next to a ticket that they don't
- 11:25Speaker 5: feel is your best. Look. Green dot means very good
- 11:30Speaker 5: code for you. It's Territory ten ten percent off your
- 11:34Speaker 5: next set of MLB tickets at seakeek. That's ten percent

- 11:42Speaker 5: description to download the app and have the code automatically
- 11:45Speaker 5: added to your account so you can use it later.
- 11:49Speaker 1: And Welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Troumo, Mike
- 11:52Speaker 1: d Gievanna, and Jim Palmer, our special guest, the former
- 11:54Speaker 1: Hall of Famer I believe Mark haz The next question.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Okay, where are the Orioles go? What are they doing?
- 12:02Speaker 3: They trade badly?
- 12:03Speaker 4: I understand if he wasn't interested in signing a contract extension,
- 12:08Speaker 4: then logically I think that that does make sense. They
- 12:12Speaker 4: but they've already done one rebuild, very painful. It took
- 12:17Speaker 4: a while, but it did pay off, not in the
- 12:18Speaker 4: form of a world series, but they did have a
- 12:21Speaker 4: lot of success under Brandon Hyde. You know, some good seasons,
- 12:25Speaker 4: and they reshuffled. There's new instructors every year. You and
- 12:29Speaker 4: I have talked about some of this, but you know,
- 12:31Speaker 4: the Angels are doing it for the first time, and
- 12:34Speaker 4: I guess you want to get it right and try
- 12:35Speaker 4: and emulate teams that have sustained success. Brewers raised teams
- 12:40Speaker 4: like that unless you're a big spender. But what do
- 12:44Speaker 4: you see from the Oriols now? Just is this just
- 12:47Speaker 4: a reshuffling restocking. What's going on.
- 12:51Speaker 2: That's a good question. You know, when Michael Eyas came
- 12:53Speaker 2: in twenty nineteen, he said, we're going to create an
- 12:57Speaker 2: elite pipeline. Now again, when you're drafting number one, you
- 13:02Speaker 2: hope that, you know. Again, I mean, they take Adlie
- 13:05Speaker 2: over Bobby Wood Junior. They do get Gunner Henderson, who
- 13:10Speaker 2: was I think the fortieth pick that year, so pretty
- 13:14Speaker 2: talented player, even though this year he's been struggling, you know,
- 13:18Speaker 2: And then they don't draft pitchers. That's why I think
- 13:21Speaker 2: the Adlie Ruschman trade, you know, in getting Taylor Word
- 13:25Speaker 2: who you know, was with the Angels hit thirty six
- 13:27Speaker 2: home runs career high. I mean normally years what twenty three,
- 13:30Speaker 2: twenty six, somewhere in that range when he's healthy, but
- 13:33Speaker 2: he only hit seven one at Camvin Yards. Now they
- 13:35Speaker 2: could change left field. Used to be three sixty four,
- 13:39Speaker 2: now it went to three ninety eight. Now it's back
- 13:41Speaker 2: in a little bit. I mean, it's you know, it's
- 13:44Speaker 2: kind of weird, but I think they thought they had
- 13:47Speaker 2: a team that could compete. But again, one of their
- 13:51Speaker 2: best young players is Jordan Westburn, and when you take
- 13:55Speaker 2: him out of the lineup, you know, the Oils don't
- 13:57Speaker 2: beat lefties. You know they're going to face Detmer's tonight
- 14:01Speaker 2: and I'm going, okay, not only is he a good pitcher,
- 14:04Speaker 2: he's left handed. What did Pete Rose say? If you're
- 14:06Speaker 2: breathing in your left handed you got a chance to
- 14:08Speaker 2: play the big league. So you know, again we are
- 14:10Speaker 2: in a rebuild of sense. But a lot of times
- 14:16Speaker 2: when you know, like when they traded Mancini and Lopez
- 14:20Speaker 2: and what twenty twenty twenty two, after only winning fifty
- 14:25Speaker 2: some games a year before, Mike Alas said, well left off,
- 14:28Speaker 2: Well then you trade two of your better players. But
- 14:31Speaker 2: in twenty three they you know, they won a hundred
- 14:33Speaker 2: and one games, and you know, after going from fifty
- 14:36Speaker 2: seven to eighty three, then one hundred and one and
- 14:38Speaker 2: ninety one. So again this is a team that you
- 14:43Speaker 2: think on paper, I mean they'd signed Pete a Lawance,
- 14:46Speaker 2: they traded for Shane Bobs, who has pitched a lot
- 14:49Speaker 2: better than his record because they don't score any runs
- 14:50Speaker 2: for him. You know, they've had some injuries. You know Helsley,
- 14:53Speaker 2: they got him as a closer. He's been popping on
- 14:55Speaker 2: the il. You know, Trevor Rodgers last year had That
- 15:00Speaker 2: is the most incredible seventeen games streak that I've ever seen,
- 15:03Speaker 2: and I've been in baseball over sixty years. I had
- 15:06Speaker 2: a one thirty one ear after which seventeen starts, you know,
- 15:09Speaker 2: you go on a run. I mean I went on
- 15:11Speaker 2: a run once where I you know, I had thirty
- 15:12Speaker 2: three in the third scoreless sttings and you're thinking you're
- 15:15Speaker 2: not going to get you any runs. But to do that,
- 15:16Speaker 2: he gave up six runs. And his last startup in
- 15:18Speaker 2: New York is he you know, for eighteen starts one
- 15:21Speaker 2: to eighty one, and he started out poorly. Now he's
- 15:23Speaker 2: pitching as well as anybody, but they haven't extended him,
- 15:26Speaker 2: so I don't I don't know what they're going to do.
- 15:28Speaker 2: They have the highest payroll, I think in the history
- 15:30Speaker 2: of the Orioles and they're three games out of five hundred.
- 15:33Speaker 2: So again, is this a rebuild? I don't think so.
- 15:37Speaker 2: But once again, you know the Alie Rushman trade. You know,
- 15:41Speaker 2: you don't think it's going to happen till it does.
- 15:44Speaker 2: One of the writers called me last night and they said, well,
- 15:46Speaker 2: do you know that he turned down an extension? And
- 15:48Speaker 2: I said no, I said why don't you ask the GM.
- 15:52Speaker 3: And he said, well, I did.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You wouldn't answer it because if you did, that means
- 15:55Speaker 2: when Gunnar Henderson two years from now, and he's a
- 15:58Speaker 2: Scott Boris, you know, who is one of the best
- 16:00Speaker 2: Asians in baseball, but automatically, if he doesn't sign an extension,
- 16:03Speaker 2: he's going to be traded in the middle of the season.
- 16:04Speaker 2: So I don't think you want to verbally set that precedent.
- 16:07Speaker 2: So it'll be very interesting what they do. But they
- 16:10Speaker 2: needed pitching. Apparently they got from the Red Sox to
- 16:16Speaker 2: really good prospects. But Mark knows as well as I do.
- 16:19Speaker 2: You know, cal Ripkensita always say there's suspects in their prospects,
- 16:24Speaker 2: and the prospects get the chance to get to the
- 16:25Speaker 2: big leagues probably a little bit sooner, whether you got
- 16:28Speaker 2: a big lot of money to sign or you know,
- 16:30Speaker 2: you throw ninety eight or whatever. But the minute you
- 16:32Speaker 2: get to the big leagues, you're a suspect again, until
- 16:34Speaker 2: you prove that you can play the game at a
- 16:36Speaker 2: high level. Yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Hey, Ken Ken Rosenthal in the Foul Territory Network has
- 16:42Speaker 1: interesting things to say about this Rushman deal.
- 16:44Speaker 7: Let's take a listen The Rushman trade, to me, was
- 16:48Speaker 7: the defining trade of this deadline. It was fascinating ADLEI
- 16:51Speaker 7: Rushman going to the Boston Red Sox for a number
- 16:54Speaker 7: of prospects, and it kind of, as I wrote, demonstrated
- 16:59Speaker 7: two teams at opposite extremes. The Orioles, a team that
- 17:03Speaker 7: was supposedly going to be a competitive, contending type club
- 17:07Speaker 7: by now. They talked about lift off, their president of
- 17:10Speaker 7: base Operations, Michaelllias did in twenty twenty two. They didn't
- 17:15Speaker 7: lift off.
- 17:16Speaker 8: They haven't crashed, but they've kind of gone nowhere, and
- 17:19Speaker 8: now they've traded the guy they picked number one over
- 17:23Speaker 8: Bobby Wick Junior in twenty nineteen, the guy that was
- 17:27Speaker 8: really the signature piece of their rebuild, the guy who
- 17:30Speaker 8: they talked about keeping forever and yet never signed to
- 17:35Speaker 8: a long term extension.
- 17:36Speaker 7: That guy is, of course, Rushman.
- 17:39Speaker 8: And the reason that this trade for the Orioles was
- 17:43Speaker 8: so deflating to so many of their fans is that
- 17:47Speaker 8: it kind of acknowledges that the whole thing hasn't gone
- 17:51Speaker 8: According to Plant, fans are asked all the time.
- 17:55Speaker 7: Trust the process, stay with us.
- 17:57Speaker 8: Their Oriols fans did. Thro's some really hard years. They tanked,
- 18:01Speaker 8: they got some big picks, and now they are not
- 18:05Speaker 8: starting over, but certainly retooling in a way that is
- 18:09Speaker 8: going to require more patience. And they've got pieces in
- 18:12Speaker 8: place going forward they'll be okay. They've got Alonso and
- 18:16Speaker 8: they've got Basaios long signed, long term. They've got pieces
- 18:20Speaker 8: in their rotation Kyle Bradish. Of course, Shane Bo's long term.
- 18:24Speaker 8: They can extend a qualifying offer to Trevor Rodgers. But
- 18:29Speaker 8: fans are right to ask, hey, man, what's going on here?
- 18:34Speaker 8: Why is.
- 18:36Speaker 2: That?
- 18:37Speaker 1: Jim as Mark said, the Angels are finally committed to
- 18:40Speaker 1: a rebuild. It's really the first time since I can
- 18:43Speaker 1: ever remember. But are the Orioles with What's going on now?
- 18:47Speaker 1: Something of a cautionary tale for the Angels, especially they're
- 18:50Speaker 1: fans who might be thinking this is a smooth, linear process.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Well, it worked for the Oriols. It's just they couldn't
- 18:58Speaker 2: sustain it. And you know, so they went one hundred
- 19:02Speaker 2: and one and then they win ninety one. They go
- 19:04Speaker 2: to the playoffs two years ago, they get swept by
- 19:06Speaker 2: the Rangers, who win the World Series. In twenty twenty three.
- 19:09Speaker 2: They had a good club, but they had an inexperienced club,
- 19:11Speaker 2: and you know, Brady's got beat in game one, really
- 19:16Speaker 2: good game. I think he gave up three runs and
- 19:19Speaker 2: Oils didn't score. And then Grayson Rodriguez Dean Kramer, who
- 19:23Speaker 2: was Jewish right after what happened in two thousand and seven,
- 19:26Speaker 2: and he's going to go start a playoff game and
- 19:28Speaker 2: a lot of things on his mind, man, other than baseball,
- 19:31Speaker 2: what happened in Israel or in Gaza. So and then
- 19:34Speaker 2: the next year they play Kansas City, and you know,
- 19:38Speaker 2: they lose, what three to two, and then they lose
- 19:40Speaker 2: two to one. So they're a good team, but they're
- 19:42Speaker 2: not a great team. And then you know, all of
- 19:46Speaker 2: a sudden, you know, next year they start out fifteen
- 19:48Speaker 2: and twenty eight, and I'm on the elevator in Anaheim
- 19:51Speaker 2: and the club's not playing well. You know, it's game
- 19:54Speaker 2: three of the Oriols playing in Anaheim, and Mike Elias,
- 19:56Speaker 2: the GM says, you ever see a team go from
- 19:59Speaker 2: all the way up here to the autom And I said,
- 20:00Speaker 2: not one with good pitching. And you know, you went
- 20:03Speaker 2: back to your point. I never played on a team
- 20:05Speaker 2: that didn't have good pitching. So you're in games. Your
- 20:08Speaker 2: players think you're in games. I don't know, Mark. I mean,
- 20:11Speaker 2: I'm not going to speak for you, but because you
- 20:12Speaker 2: were a terrific hitter, but if you don't think you
- 20:15Speaker 2: have to get seven or eight runs a game, you
- 20:18Speaker 2: can get three or four, or I can get a
- 20:20Speaker 2: big hit, or I'm going to be involved versus not
- 20:23Speaker 2: going to be a slug fester every night. I think
- 20:25Speaker 2: you got to think you have a better chance of
- 20:26Speaker 2: winning games. And all the good clubs I played on
- 20:29Speaker 2: had excellent pitching.
- 20:31Speaker 3: That's a perfect segue.
- 20:32Speaker 4: I was going to ask you, I personally like short
- 20:35Speaker 4: starts four and a third hundred pitches.
- 20:39Speaker 3: No, I don't. And it's been the.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Downfall of many you know, the Angels have struggled in
- 20:46Speaker 4: a number of areas, but one short start not only
- 20:50Speaker 4: taxes that night bullpen, but the games to come, and
- 20:54Speaker 4: it's been really tough.
- 20:56Speaker 3: My question that was really.
- 20:58Speaker 4: Going to be what are they getting right and maybe
- 21:01Speaker 4: the opposite of right with the modern pitch. And we
- 21:04Speaker 4: just watched the miz you know he used throwing a
- 21:06Speaker 4: million really impressive arm. There's still a guy's doing well.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Grayson did give them lank last night. He went seven innings.
- 21:14Speaker 4: But the majority of the time, I'm saying, these guys
- 21:17Speaker 4: look awfully happy after their five innings, and for you
- 21:21Speaker 4: that would have been a I mean, it's just done unfathomable.
- 21:24Speaker 4: I'm assuming five innings that's a failure.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Well, we had a guy that just got traded, a
- 21:29Speaker 2: starting pitcher, and about three years ago, he went to Cincinnati,
- 21:32Speaker 2: took place to pitch, but just four innings, it was
- 21:34Speaker 2: up ten and has six runs. So I didn't I
- 21:37Speaker 2: mean I watched the game. But and then I'm going
- 21:39Speaker 2: down to Houston to do the games, and I was
- 21:40Speaker 2: talking Tom in the locker room and I said, you
- 21:43Speaker 2: know what went on in Cincinnati. I mean, I kind
- 21:45Speaker 2: of watched the game. He said, well, you know, I
- 21:47Speaker 2: actually kind of like my metrics and my pitch shapes.
- 21:50Speaker 2: And I looked at him. Can I give you a
- 21:52Speaker 2: little girl Weaver? He goes or a Weaver. I said, yeah,
- 21:55Speaker 2: the Hall of Fame manager that's got a statue at
- 21:59Speaker 2: you know in campaign, I said, if you told Weaver
- 22:02Speaker 2: to your point mark when you blew out the bullpen
- 22:05Speaker 2: by only going four innings, gave up ten hits and
- 22:07Speaker 2: six runs, and you told him that you liked your
- 22:10Speaker 2: pitch shake, Patricks, he would have said, so did the
- 22:13Speaker 2: kid is And if you keep that up, you'll be
- 22:16Speaker 2: down at Triple A Rochester. So the game is different.
- 22:19Speaker 2: You know, a couple of years ago, they don't like
- 22:22Speaker 2: me to talk to the pitchers or even being around
- 22:24Speaker 2: him because the media is kind of the necessary evil
- 22:29Speaker 2: in Baltimore with the pr people. But I suck into
- 22:32Speaker 2: the locker room before opening day and Tyler Wells, you
- 22:35Speaker 2: just got traded down to Tampa Bay. Actually pretty good.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Was pitching really well for the Oils. So that's another trade.
- 22:40Speaker 2: I mean, look at Brian Baker's number they traded him
- 22:42Speaker 2: last year. I think he's got close to thirty saves.
- 22:45Speaker 2: So just Tampa obviously, you know they know what they're
- 22:49Speaker 2: going to do with their pitching. But so tider Wells said,
- 22:51Speaker 2: you throw a lot of pitches, and I said, well,
- 22:55Speaker 2: the year I was twenty, everybody got hurt in spring training.
- 22:57Speaker 2: I thought I was going to Triple A and I
- 22:59Speaker 2: you know, my first start was at Fenway Park. I
- 23:01Speaker 2: throw one hundred and seventy seven pitches, you know, strike out,
- 23:04Speaker 2: a seven, walk, seven, hit a home run, off day
- 23:06Speaker 2: more head pitch before and then of course they sent
- 23:09Speaker 2: him out the next day because he hung our curve ball,
- 23:10Speaker 2: almost shit it to the turnpike. And they asked our
- 23:14Speaker 2: pitching coach, Harry the Kafferkine, you know Greally, great left
- 23:16Speaker 2: handed pitcher for the Cardinals. Who's our pitching coach. It's
- 23:19Speaker 2: a lot of pitches for a twenty year old. He said, yeah,
- 23:21Speaker 2: we want to get that pitch count down into the
- 23:23Speaker 2: one forties. So tdder Wells is starting to last. But
- 23:26Speaker 2: that's the way it was. I mean, you you did
- 23:30Speaker 2: what you could do. And I mean I know, because
- 23:34Speaker 2: we pissed every fore to day that you can throw
- 23:36Speaker 2: one hundred and twenty five thirty forty pitches in your
- 23:39Speaker 2: sleep if you have a good wind up, if you
- 23:41Speaker 2: know how to pitch. And I guess my point about
- 23:44Speaker 2: the oil pitcher who just got traded to the Midwest
- 23:48Speaker 2: is that it's not it's about can you what's the
- 23:51Speaker 2: hitter doing when you come through the minor leagues? And
- 23:54Speaker 2: I think in a ball, I mean I walked one
- 23:56Speaker 2: hundred and thirty one hundred and twenty nine innings, went
- 23:58Speaker 2: to instructional league, so I pitched a hundred, probably walked
- 24:01Speaker 2: to one hundred ninety guys the next tyrom in the
- 24:02Speaker 2: big leagues. But I got to pitch. I got to
- 24:04Speaker 2: learn how to get hitters out. I didn't have somebody
- 24:07Speaker 2: on the iPad that I'm talking on right now saying, well,
- 24:10Speaker 2: you know your spin rate is this, and you know
- 24:12Speaker 2: you need to ball and you need to do all that.
- 24:15Speaker 2: The hitters told me what I needed to throw. I
- 24:17Speaker 2: used to have and I don't know if you ever
- 24:19Speaker 2: did this, mark when when you're a young player, even
- 24:21Speaker 2: when you're an old player, I used to have guys
- 24:23Speaker 2: that wanted to see live pitching come down. And when
- 24:26Speaker 2: I'm throwing my side or before a game, I wanted
- 24:30Speaker 2: a hitter standing up there. I wanted to simulate what
- 24:32Speaker 2: the game was going to be like when the game started.
- 24:36Speaker 2: And meanwhile, I mean, if if I'm like, we have
- 24:38Speaker 2: a a Rule five guy, you know, or a number
- 24:41Speaker 2: one draft choice, five million dollar player, Colden Kwzer doesn't
- 24:44Speaker 2: hit lefties, doesn't it strikes out too much? It was
- 24:46Speaker 2: a back to ball football guy in college. He doesn't
- 24:50Speaker 2: hit left handers. Every time Trevor Rodgers would throw were
- 24:54Speaker 2: now Kate Povid, who pitched against Angels last night, I'd
- 24:57Speaker 2: be down there track and pitches. I know they have
- 24:59Speaker 2: all the machines, but there's nothing like seeing the ball
- 25:02Speaker 2: out of your hand. One of the greatest articles ever
- 25:04Speaker 2: was Sporting News with Tony Gwynn and Stam Musual talking
- 25:08Speaker 2: about what they saw when the pitcher delivers the ball.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Now that's thirty six and twenty hits and eight batting titles, saying,
- 25:15Speaker 2: we noticed the speed of the ball out of the hand. Now,
- 25:19Speaker 2: I don't know if you agree with that, but tracking pitches,
- 25:22Speaker 2: you know, it's pretty important when you're trying to be a.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Hitter, and I do agree, but it cuts into your
- 25:28Speaker 4: arrest and recovery time. So hitting on field bad in
- 25:33Speaker 4: practice is it's just not what it used to be.
- 25:36Speaker 4: Two three guys, I said, where is everybody clarity? When
- 25:40Speaker 4: they came into town last year the Cubs, I said,
- 25:43Speaker 4: this is it justin Turner and one other? But but no,
- 25:46Speaker 4: I mean all aside the game. The game has changed. Guys,
- 25:49Speaker 4: don't play your practice outside as much. They need two
- 25:53Speaker 4: and a half hours of quiet time. What is when
- 25:58Speaker 4: you get to the playoffs and you actually have to
- 26:00Speaker 4: writers and you and then.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Then I was told this year, well we I said,
- 26:05Speaker 2: you don't hit outside anymore now, Pete Alnso said, listen,
- 26:08Speaker 2: I'm going to hit outside because I want to know
- 26:09Speaker 2: what the background's like, because you know, I'm I just
- 26:13Speaker 2: got one hundred and fifty five million dollars. I don't
- 26:15Speaker 2: have the mess. Ever, let him go. He's the real dude,
- 26:17Speaker 2: you know. Yeah. I mean he's not hitting as well
- 26:19Speaker 2: with runners and score ambition, and he's a strikeout guy.
- 26:22Speaker 2: But he plays the game every day as hard as
- 26:24Speaker 2: he can possibly play. And he's my TYPEO player, so
- 26:27Speaker 2: so he'll do that. But I was told, he said, well,
- 26:31Speaker 2: we score more runs when we when we don't hit outside.
- 26:35Speaker 2: And I go, so are we going to factor in
- 26:38Speaker 2: who was pitching that day? You know? You know, or
- 26:43Speaker 2: you know we don't beat left handed starters? Well, what's
- 26:46Speaker 2: the team he or ray for our guys the days
- 26:49Speaker 2: you don't beat left handed starters. I don't give you
- 26:52Speaker 2: the whole picture. So again, I don't know. I played
- 26:55Speaker 2: with some of the greatest players, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson,
- 26:58Speaker 2: you know, cal Ripton and Eddie Murray, you know, all
- 27:01Speaker 2: Hall of famers. He took that practiced in wolves, you know,
- 27:09Speaker 2: and that's what and you know and I tell you now,
- 27:13Speaker 2: Baltimore used to before global warming, Baltimore used to be hotter.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Well, I'll probably know this. Jim Mark is forty years old.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I believe he's as old school as they come. That's
- 27:23Speaker 1: what we love about him. Hey, you mentioned Grayson Rodriguez
- 27:26Speaker 1: being one of your favorite young pitchers. We have certainly
- 27:29Speaker 1: not seen the best of him in Anaheim this year,
- 27:31Speaker 1: but it looked like he had had a maybe what
- 27:34Speaker 1: we hope as a breakthrough game on on Monday Tuesday night.
- 27:38Speaker 1: What did you think of Grayson? How does he look
- 27:40Speaker 1: to you? Is he starting to look like the Grayson
- 27:43Speaker 1: Rodriguez of old?
- 27:44Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you know, he was twenty and eight for
- 27:48Speaker 2: the Ards. I mean, but he got a lot of runs,
- 27:50Speaker 2: going over six runs a game, and what he needed
- 27:53Speaker 2: to do when he was healthy, which he looked like
- 27:56Speaker 2: he was healthy last night. I mean, last night's is
- 27:58Speaker 2: a hanging slider to a lot on a lead off
- 28:00Speaker 2: walk that's got him in trouble. And that's so if
- 28:03Speaker 2: you're going to walk the lead off guy, you better
- 28:05Speaker 2: strike some people out or whatever. And he did make
- 28:07Speaker 2: a good Pete you know, Hagen slider, the Pete a
- 28:09Speaker 2: lonzo a two runs single and there's it's two nothing,
- 28:12Speaker 2: you know, and then he pitches seven innings only doesn't
- 28:15Speaker 2: go to any more runs. He's healthy, I mean, he's smart,
- 28:19Speaker 2: he's a hard worker, but he's got to figure out. Okay,
- 28:24Speaker 2: I need to be more consistent. So when I have
- 28:26Speaker 2: a bad game, it's my ear is not six or
- 28:30Speaker 2: seven mons a game. So because once again, like my
- 28:32Speaker 2: point is, if Mark's playing, you know, right field for me,
- 28:36Speaker 2: I'm going to make him think as the starting pitcher,
- 28:38Speaker 2: we have a chance to win that And how do
- 28:40Speaker 2: you do that? Stay away from beginnings. And when Grayson
- 28:44Speaker 2: did pitch well for the Orioles when he was healthy,
- 28:46Speaker 2: the beginnings, you know, got in the way. So again,
- 28:49Speaker 2: talent guy, hopefully all pitch well because you know he's
- 28:53Speaker 2: a he's a good guy. I mean, he's really a
- 28:56Speaker 2: good guy. And it's the last number one draft choice
- 28:58Speaker 2: of the Ools or released high draft choice Wheels have
- 29:01Speaker 2: ever actually had, and that was Dan Duquette and the
- 29:03Speaker 2: general manager.
- 29:06Speaker 4: How much better do you think you would have done
- 29:08Speaker 4: had you had to catch her with his glove flopping
- 29:11Speaker 4: all over the place back there, well than you a
- 29:14Speaker 4: target moving tar Well Carlos. He actually put the glove
- 29:20Speaker 4: up yesterday.
- 29:20Speaker 3: I mean, here is I know, I know, and he
- 29:23Speaker 3: held it.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Now he held it and I tweeted and Ben Ben
- 29:27Speaker 2: mcdonaldause we've been talking about this. He does the games
- 29:29Speaker 2: that I don't do, most of them. And I said,
- 29:33Speaker 2: you throw it to the glove. I mean, how do
- 29:35Speaker 2: you have the plate seventeen inches wide? You can make
- 29:38Speaker 2: it about another two point eight on both sides, so
- 29:41Speaker 2: what that's almost twenty three inch or twenty two inches somewhere.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Because all you have to do, and we've seen it
- 29:45Speaker 2: with the Avs, have the edge of the ball on there.
- 29:48Speaker 2: So if I want to throw the ball out of
- 29:50Speaker 2: the middle of the plate, I mean, how do I
- 29:51Speaker 2: want to pitch Mark Trumbo? Not down the middle unless
- 29:55Speaker 2: I want to see how far the ball went, you know,
- 29:58Speaker 2: so the point is down in the way. Well, okay, okay,
- 30:02Speaker 2: you know, like I said, twenty sixteen to lead the
- 30:06Speaker 2: American League and home runs with forty seven. There's three
- 30:09Speaker 2: hundred ninety hitters now in the big leagues. If you
- 30:12Speaker 2: you know, thirteen position players maybe not hitters, but guys
- 30:15Speaker 2: that go to the bat. And then you have you know,
- 30:18Speaker 2: you know, three hundred, three hundred ninety pitchers. How many
- 30:22Speaker 2: of those three hundred ninety hitters have they said, where
- 30:24Speaker 2: is the optimum ball to hit hard? How many would
- 30:27Speaker 2: say loan away?
- 30:30Speaker 4: Well you just try and pull it over the left
- 30:32Speaker 4: field fence. Well there, yeah, they're away.
- 30:37Speaker 1: There are They are very few tony gwinns left in
- 30:39Speaker 1: this game, Jim.
- 30:40Speaker 2: Well no, but you know I went to ten with
- 30:42Speaker 2: Bobby Gretchen and Rock Gerou and we were talking about
- 30:44Speaker 2: that and Bobby said, now he played behind me. And
- 30:46Speaker 2: you know, Bobby should be in the Hall of Fame.
- 30:48Speaker 2: His numbers are higher than Ran. There's wars over seventy
- 30:50Speaker 2: seventy one, I think, or something like that. One of
- 30:53Speaker 2: the more one of my favorite teammates because of his intensity.
- 30:56Speaker 2: And he said, well, you used to piss, you know,
- 30:58Speaker 2: kind of down away and then ride the ball.
- 31:00Speaker 3: We've got a Gritch fan.
- 31:04Speaker 2: I thought, how in tess he was, you know, after
- 31:07Speaker 2: the flair he was? And I so, you know, we're
- 31:12Speaker 2: having dinner and I said, yeah, down the way and
- 31:14Speaker 2: I said, Brodnie, I said, how'd you head down away?
- 31:18Speaker 2: He goes, well, you know this is a guy that
- 31:19Speaker 2: one said Betty felt. I actually hit that pitch pretty well.
- 31:22Speaker 2: But you know what's going to happen the lone away
- 31:25Speaker 2: fastball to right ear lefty. If you do it early
- 31:28Speaker 2: in the game and you find out that the hitter
- 31:31Speaker 2: will cover the outside corner, it's an information pitch. It
- 31:34Speaker 2: makes you better, you know, if the guy won't do it,
- 31:38Speaker 2: why would I want? I mean right now, I mean,
- 31:40Speaker 2: I throw a guy fastball on the way, you know,
- 31:41Speaker 2: outside corner of the play, and if you took him,
- 31:45Speaker 2: I throw another one. I mean, it's not an audition
- 31:48Speaker 2: in Broadway. I'm gonna have to show him that I
- 31:50Speaker 2: can sing, dance the odel and all that stuff. I
- 31:52Speaker 2: want to see what he does, and I want to
- 31:54Speaker 2: see as quickly and early in the game because I'm
- 31:56Speaker 2: going to pitch deep into the game. So if he
- 31:59Speaker 2: takes it, throw them another one. If he takes it,
- 32:01Speaker 2: I'd probably throw them another one because if he can
- 32:03Speaker 2: hit it and he covers the outside corner, probably going
- 32:06Speaker 2: to be susceptible up and in maybe not hit the
- 32:09Speaker 2: change up very well or the you know, the breaking ball.
- 32:12Speaker 2: So why wouldn't I want to find that out? See now,
- 32:14Speaker 2: everybody tells you you know, Wow, this guy can't hit
- 32:16Speaker 2: the ball well. When you pitch, it's a very visual thing.
- 32:20Speaker 2: I mean, Mark, I would assume some guys you see
- 32:23Speaker 2: the ball better than other guys, regardless of what the
- 32:25Speaker 2: velocity is. Pitching, where's the bad hit? You got to
- 32:29Speaker 2: watch the bad head. You have to go out and
- 32:30Speaker 2: watch them take batting practice. You have to sit on
- 32:33Speaker 2: the days you're not pitching and talk about the game
- 32:35Speaker 2: and who has good bad speed, and who has a
- 32:37Speaker 2: slider speed back. All these things we learned. We weren't
- 32:41Speaker 2: totally now. You know, they say, okay, you need to
- 32:44Speaker 2: do this and all that. Throw a fastball right by.
- 32:46Speaker 2: They go, oh, go not a good breaking ball.
- 32:49Speaker 3: Hitter.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Speed the bat up with a breaking ball, and you
- 32:51Speaker 2: wonder why you give up more runs than you want to.
- 32:55Speaker 4: Yeah, you can learn a lot by watching the game.
- 32:58Speaker 4: That's why you know the iPads and stuff. So she
- 33:01Speaker 4: did a really good job for us young players. Well
- 33:05Speaker 4: he just frankly booted us out of the video room.
- 33:07Speaker 4: Maybe just me, but I think Borgeous was there too.
- 33:11Speaker 4: But his point was, what are you going to learn?
- 33:13Speaker 4: You just have to a break and ball in the dirt.
- 33:15Speaker 4: What you know what more do you need to know
- 33:17Speaker 4: if you want, if you want to look look at
- 33:19Speaker 4: you know, a strike that you fouled off, But really
- 33:21Speaker 4: you don't even know which way is up. So get
- 33:23Speaker 4: out of there, Bobby Bray. You can go in there
- 33:26Speaker 4: and you're going to stay on the top step and
- 33:27Speaker 4: you're going to watch the game. But it was invaluable advice,
- 33:31Speaker 4: a little harsh of the time, but or direct, I
- 33:33Speaker 4: should say, but I appreciate that. That's the type of
- 33:35Speaker 4: thing that I'm not gonna get off on a tangent.
- 33:38Speaker 4: But the Angels, you know, I think that they're a
- 33:40Speaker 4: candidate for, you know, a manager with a little firmer hand.
- 33:43Speaker 4: I've said it previously. And you've got young players sometimes
- 33:47Speaker 4: they need guidance and direct guide guidance. So the fact
- 33:52Speaker 4: that they don't let you talk to pictures as much,
- 33:54Speaker 4: or maybe it's not as encouraged, is tough to hear that.
- 33:58Speaker 4: You know right there, that clip we can just put
- 34:00Speaker 4: it on repeat and send it to him. Well, well, yeah,
- 34:03Speaker 4: I mean I had a friend today. You know, my
- 34:05Speaker 4: wife works out at Orange Theory and Nord from Bob
- 34:08Speaker 4: used to be a vice presidentman. He says, have you
- 34:10Speaker 4: ever talked to the pictures. I got to Baltimore in
- 34:14Speaker 4: what nineteen sixty five, and here we are in twenty
- 34:18Speaker 4: twenty six and they have never asked me to talk
- 34:22Speaker 4: to the pictures.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Now. Doesn't mean I don't dumb pictures. You know. We
- 34:26Speaker 2: had a general manager who went to the Cardinals. First
- 34:28Speaker 2: thing he did the next bring he said, hey, will
- 34:30Speaker 2: you come up and talked to our you know, minor
- 34:32Speaker 2: league pictures. And I said, you've got Bob Gibson. He said, no,
- 34:35Speaker 2: we want to hear another. And I'm out there and
- 34:38Speaker 2: I you know, And I said, so, you know, who
- 34:41Speaker 2: are the two best pictures in the National League the
- 34:43Speaker 2: last ten years?
- 34:44Speaker 8: Oh?
- 34:44Speaker 2: You know, Schilling and Johnson. I said, no, no, the last
- 34:47Speaker 2: ten years, Maddox and Glavin. I said, what did they
- 34:50Speaker 2: throw about ninety ninety one? I said, how many guys
- 34:53Speaker 2: throw ninety one? Everybody's hand went out. I said, but
- 34:56Speaker 2: could you throw a change up in any count? Can
- 34:58Speaker 2: you pitch the both sides of the plate? Can you
- 34:59Speaker 2: field your position? Can you throw the low and away
- 35:03Speaker 2: fastball when you need to? MM? So that's that's kind
- 35:08Speaker 2: of you know that. I don't think the game has changed.
- 35:10Speaker 2: It doesn't mean that guys don't hit low and away fast,
- 35:14Speaker 2: but you kind of know where they are. And you know,
- 35:15Speaker 2: if you have a baseball field, it's just big. And
- 35:19Speaker 2: I mean, you could hit the ball anywhere out of
- 35:20Speaker 2: the ballpark. But if you have a guy that's you know,
- 35:24Speaker 2: that's a you can take the field. And if I
- 35:27Speaker 2: have left hand, hit her up and I know I'm
- 35:29Speaker 2: gonna throw the ball a long away, I can take
- 35:30Speaker 2: that field and make it that much smaller. I can
- 35:34Speaker 2: confise I can now I can have the same amounted
- 35:36Speaker 2: a vendors in a smaller field. Now doesn't that make sense?
- 35:40Speaker 2: But you know now, I mean I last night, you're
- 35:46Speaker 2: you're catcher. You just got him. He hits a little
- 35:48Speaker 2: roller in the right field. More baller, Yeah what whatever?
- 35:54Speaker 2: But I mean, no, you're right, yeah.
- 35:58Speaker 4: I mean the hardest thing as a hitter has got
- 36:02Speaker 4: granky Dan Harren, all these guys stealing strike one down
- 36:05Speaker 4: in a way, very frustrating. You're behind in the count
- 36:08Speaker 4: now already. And I planned to hit it, and I was,
- 36:11Speaker 4: you know, you go up there with it. I'm going
- 36:13Speaker 4: to be aggressive. And it's just not a pitch you
- 36:14Speaker 4: can do anything with. So the brain says nope, and
- 36:17Speaker 4: then oh one, again and again, you know, against these
- 36:20Speaker 4: good guys. So I appreciate that. I think Mike's gott
- 36:23Speaker 4: got a final question for you.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I have to ask you this, Jim, speaking of
- 36:28Speaker 1: great pictures, you and Tom Sever were two of the
- 36:30Speaker 1: greatest of your generation and my generation. I grew up
- 36:33Speaker 1: in Connecticut in the sixties and seventies seventies. Tom Sever
- 36:37Speaker 1: was my favorite player. But you guys did not face
- 36:40Speaker 1: each other in the sixty nine World Series. You did
- 36:43Speaker 1: start opposite of each other in the nineteen seventy All
- 36:46Speaker 1: Star Games Cincinnati, But as far as I can tell
- 36:50Speaker 1: a research of mine this morning, you square it off
- 36:52Speaker 1: only once in the regular season, on April twenty third,
- 36:55Speaker 1: nineteen eighty four, when you were in your last season
- 36:58Speaker 1: with the Orioles and Sever was at the end of
- 37:00Speaker 1: his career with the Chicago White Sox. What if anything,
- 37:03Speaker 1: do you remember from that game in Comisky Park, And
- 37:06Speaker 1: did you guys develop a relationship through all those All
- 37:09Speaker 1: Star Games or whether it's a mutual admiration or respect
- 37:12Speaker 1: over the years.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Welliver, you know what, he you know, struck out eight
- 37:17Speaker 2: thousand people and won three hundred eleven games. My first
- 37:20Speaker 2: All Star game. I you know, Willie Mays let Off
- 37:24Speaker 2: Rose hit second bench hit. I think Dick Allen has
- 37:28Speaker 2: just got in the Hall of Fame. He hit seventh
- 37:30Speaker 2: or something like that. Was it's only headache have when
- 37:33Speaker 2: I looked at that lineup. But I pitched against Tom
- 37:35Speaker 2: and David Nallely, who won twenty games courts four times.
- 37:37Speaker 2: He would eventually be pitching when when they would lose
- 37:40Speaker 2: an extra innings Pete Rose playing third base, and I
- 37:44Speaker 2: dropped a bunt down and he threw me out. And
- 37:49Speaker 2: I come back and David Nally says, you know you
- 37:52Speaker 2: you get a little bit of power. Why did you
- 37:54Speaker 2: try to hit a home run off with Tom Seaver?
- 37:55Speaker 2: And I said, what are you crazy? What do you
- 37:58Speaker 2: have to do is let's see April. I don't remember
- 38:02Speaker 2: the date, but in nineteen seventy he struck out nineteen.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Not only did he strike out in nineteen, he struck
- 38:09Speaker 2: out the last ten batters of the game. So mark point,
- 38:15Speaker 2: you think you threw more than ninety five pitches that day?
- 38:21Speaker 2: I mean, he could, you know, he was terrific And
- 38:26Speaker 2: to your point, to your point of course, we used
- 38:28Speaker 2: you know, we were both on the Baseball Assistant Team Board,
- 38:32Speaker 2: so I got to see him. They have a big
- 38:33Speaker 2: Din used to have a big dinner up in January.
- 38:35Speaker 2: You know, we're both in the Hall of Fame. I
- 38:37Speaker 2: have a great picture of us when of the Little
- 38:39Speaker 2: League World Series, you know, on Friday night after we
- 38:42Speaker 2: both retired, and the only cover I ever made of
- 38:45Speaker 2: Sports Illustrated. I'm on one side and Thomas on the other,
- 38:48Speaker 2: which is you know, awesome. Yeah, I mean I get people.
- 38:52Speaker 2: Fact people sustend it to me, and I'm going since
- 38:54Speaker 2: Tom passed away, it's gonna be a tough autograph of
- 38:57Speaker 2: I only I autogra I probably should come up with
- 38:59Speaker 2: Thoms autograph. It make it less valuable or whatever. But
- 39:03Speaker 2: you know, one of the great pitchers of all time
- 39:05Speaker 2: and and terrific guy, and you know tragically you know,
- 39:10Speaker 2: Alzheimer's or whatever. And I loved his wine. Yeah, you know,
- 39:14Speaker 2: he had a great vineyard up in Napa Valley and
- 39:17Speaker 2: I think GTS named after his dad. So you know again,
- 39:20Speaker 2: I mean, if you're a Mets fan, I wish you
- 39:23Speaker 2: know it's your point. I wish I had actually pitched
- 39:25Speaker 2: against him in the sixty nine Well, he gave up
- 39:28Speaker 2: a couple of runs. I pitched against Gary Gentry in
- 39:31Speaker 2: Game three and we got shut out. So but he
- 39:34Speaker 2: was he was tom terrific. I mean, that's kind of
- 39:37Speaker 2: some what a what a great nickname?
- 39:39Speaker 1: If memory serves at A young right hander named Nolan
- 39:42Speaker 1: Ryan finished that Gentry game.
- 39:45Speaker 2: It could have. All I know is it was one
- 39:48Speaker 2: of our best breaking ball hitters. And Nolan and people
- 39:51Speaker 2: forget that, you know, it's relief pitcher for the Mets.
- 39:53Speaker 2: And he threw him a curveball and Paul's rear end
- 39:58Speaker 2: was in our dugout hundred and one. You know, yeah,
- 40:02Speaker 2: I mean it's not that jacked up, you know, Radar,
- 40:08Speaker 2: there we go. Christ was the last out. He threw
- 40:12Speaker 2: him a two two change up for the final out
- 40:15Speaker 2: of the no hitter in Anaheim. And he'd put at
- 40:18Speaker 2: games and I'm going, how do you see the ball?
- 40:21Speaker 2: I mean, you know he's from you know, legitimate one
- 40:23Speaker 2: hundred hundred and one, and yeah, I mean he was knowing,
- 40:27Speaker 2: but he was a little bit wild. He walked me
- 40:30Speaker 2: on a three two curveball throwing. I'm not sure that
- 40:32Speaker 2: was a very proud, quite all right run against him.
- 40:38Speaker 2: Pardon me, do you ever buy it against or are
- 40:41Speaker 2: you out of you know that? Yeah, guys that try
- 40:44Speaker 2: to bunt, he would he would throw the ball back in.
- 40:48Speaker 2: You know, he'd walk about halfway, maybe even a little
- 40:50Speaker 2: bit closer to home plate, get the ball and rub
- 40:52Speaker 2: it up like this and just go try that again.
- 40:57Speaker 2: You know. No, no, no, no, no, no, I just
- 41:01Speaker 2: I just figured if you want to walk me Korea two,
- 41:03Speaker 2: I'll go down there. At least you didn't hit me,
- 41:06Speaker 2: you know. That was what the DH was, what came
- 41:09Speaker 2: in in seventy seventy three. I don't think I was
- 41:12Speaker 2: ever hit by a pitch, you know, from sixty five
- 41:15Speaker 2: to seventy two. Wow. Yeah, so I was fortunate. I
- 41:20Speaker 2: didn't hit that many goods either, only hit thirty eight guys,
- 41:22Speaker 2: four thousands.
- 41:24Speaker 1: All right, hey, we are going to end the show
- 41:26Speaker 1: with that Jim Palmer Hall of Famer, Baltimoreal's TV Analysts.
- 41:31Speaker 1: We really appreciate your time and input. Mark Tremble, thanks
- 41:35Speaker 1: as always, Hey, thanks for listening, thanks for tuning in,
- 41:38Speaker 1: and please like and subscribe and we'll see you next
- 41:41Speaker 1: time on Halo Territory.
