- 0:00What's up everybody? This is everybody settled down.
- 0:03This sports edition. I'm Charlie Marlowe.
- 0:05That is the great Eric Messersmith.
- 0:07I'm in the greater St. Louis, MO area.
- 0:10He's out there in, I was going to say beautiful Los Angeles.
- 0:14It's always beautiful. But how you doing out there,
- 0:16Eric? Is everything calmed down a bit
- 0:19right? It has, luckily.
- 0:21I mean the devastation is still insane, but the act of fires are
- 0:26pretty much contained and for now, knock on wood, everything
- 0:30seems to be getting back to normal for the most part.
- 0:33But of course, for so many people, hundreds and hundreds of
- 0:36families, they'll their lives will never be the same.
- 0:38And the destruction is just crazy and immense.
- 0:42And it's going to take years, if not decades to recover.
- 0:45And some people will never recover.
- 0:47Yeah, their homes are just gone. And they'll they won't get
- 0:49enough money from their insurance company to cover the
- 0:52costs of rebuilding. And they will, they will have to
- 0:54leave. And so those are the people I
- 0:56feel for the most that will have to resettle somewhere else and
- 1:00their all their possessions and destroyed, no home to go back to
- 1:04it. It's really, it's really, really
- 1:06a sad situation. So it it's hard to transition
- 1:10from that, but this show is gonna be sports related, which
- 1:13look, whether you're going through just something awful
- 1:16like that or your everyday sports is supposed to be a
- 1:20little bit of an escape from from your everyday daily life.
- 1:25Have had some some great football NFL play offs.
- 1:29Obviously the college football play off national championship
- 1:32game on Monday. We'll get to that.
- 1:34But I know you're more of an NFL guy, Eric.
- 1:36So let's let's start there. I, I said last week that I
- 1:40watched a bit of the Eagles Packers this past week.
- 1:45I was actually out to dinner on on Saturday night and we were
- 1:50going to go get a table. There was no table.
- 1:52So we're waiting. We sit at the bar.
- 1:54We're going to sit at the bar just for a, for a bit, get a
- 1:56couple drinks, then go to the table.
- 1:58But then that Lions commanders game was on.
- 2:01And I don't think my wife was happy that we remained at the
- 2:04bar because I was kind of watching the game as we're
- 2:08sitting there and conversing. But I'll tell you what, I don't
- 2:10know if you watched that game, but that was about the most
- 2:14entertaining half of football the first half that I can
- 2:17remember, huge plays. We're talking 5060 yard
- 2:22touchdowns. I don't know how many points
- 2:23were scored in the second quarter alone, but that was a
- 2:26really fun game. And then of course, though, the
- 2:28Lions, it's just like you, you feel for Lions fans.
- 2:32I do. I grew up an hour from Detroit.
- 2:34You thought maybe this was their year and they don't even get to
- 2:37the freaking NFC Championship Game.
- 2:39Yeah, it was. It was 52 points in the first
- 2:42half, which I believe was a record for any half in in an NFL
- 2:45playoff game ever, and 42 in the second quarter.
- 2:48That was incredible. And the game, unfortunately, in
- 2:50the end, didn't turn out to be that close.
- 2:53But it was amazing that that part of it, it was so exciting.
- 2:57And I just think it was such a contrast, too, to the Sunday
- 2:59games, which were good, which were fine.
- 3:01You know, the Bills, Ravens, Eagles, Rams, there were some
- 3:03competitive moments in those, but especially the Baltimore
- 3:06Buffalo game, but outdoors in the elements, which really
- 3:09affected those games. And you could you could see it
- 3:11with the drop passes and some of the turnovers that Baltimore
- 3:15had, the people slipping. And then you had the game in
- 3:18Detroit with the perfect conditions on Saturday night
- 3:22inside, and you saw, you saw the difference.
- 3:25So if you're talking about the Ravens game, so I watched a a
- 3:28good amount of that as well. And I and I saw the stat for
- 3:31both Josh Allen and also for who's the quarterback for Jalen
- 3:37Hurts for the Eagles about the fact that, oh, Jalen Hurts,
- 3:40well, for Eagles, Jalen Hurts, you didn't really have to do
- 3:42much. They didn't really have to do
- 3:44much in those games except for not make mistakes.
- 3:48And if they didn't make mistakes in some of these games, their
- 3:52teams ended up winning. And I know there's a lot of
- 3:53focus on Mark Andrews. We can talk about that.
- 3:57But there was the one fumble from Lamar Jackson.
- 4:00And to me that was really, that was really the game if if you
- 4:03look at So what Von Miller scoops it up, he doesn't score,
- 4:07but they score a touchdown very quickly after that.
- 4:10So you look at a game where you're a 2 point conversion away
- 4:15from tying the game and potentially sending it to
- 4:17overtime. But that play there where you
- 4:20have the fumble, that was a A10 to 14 point swing because the
- 4:25Ravens easily could have scored. They could have kicked the field
- 4:28goal, they could have scored a touchdown.
- 4:30All of a sudden, boom, it's seven points the opposite
- 4:32direction. And I know there's a lot of
- 4:34focus on the Mark Andrews drop and that was right in his bread
- 4:37basket. But also, in a game like that,
- 4:40that's the play that I really focused on, not the Andrews that
- 4:44was the one at the end. But if Lamar Jackson doesn't
- 4:47fumble that football, there's a very good chance the Ravens win.
- 4:50Yeah, I think you could argue the Ravens were the better team.
- 4:53And the Ravens were the second-half of the year were
- 4:55playing probably better than anyone else in the NFL.
- 4:58Once they got their defense fixed, their defense was number
- 5:01one in the league coming down the stretch in points allowed,
- 5:04yards allowed. And then you had Derrick Henry
- 5:07having one of the great rushing seasons we've seen in NFL
- 5:11history, certainly for somebody his age, but just in general.
- 5:13And then you have a guy putting up maybe the best quarterback
- 5:17season that we've ever seen. First guy, I mean, Lamar
- 5:20Jackson, what he did this year, it was really unbelievable. 4000
- 5:25/ 4000 passing yards over 900 rushing yards, no one's ever
- 5:28done that. Over 40 touchdowns and fewer
- 5:31than 5 interceptions, no one's ever done that.
- 5:33It was statistically maybe the greatest quarterback season
- 5:36ever. He's about to win his third MVP,
- 5:39but yet in the playoffs he has not been nearly as good.
- 5:44Now this game against Buffalo, he wasn't terrible by any means,
- 5:48but he had the big mistakes as you pointed out.
- 5:52And some of that is due to luck, is due to the elements.
- 5:55But this is now a pattern with Jackson.
- 5:58He has been historically great in the regular season.
- 6:02I mean, 3 MVPS. There's only a few guys ever
- 6:04that have won more than three MVPS.
- 6:08And what he has done, first team all pro again, he he's gonna go
- 6:13down as one of the greatest regular season performers ever.
- 6:15But legacies are built in the playoffs and it shows you how
- 6:19tough it is to win in the playoffs.
- 6:22It's it's, it's such, it's so distorted in the NFL because you
- 6:26get one game to advance. It's not like the other major
- 6:30pro sports where it's best four out of seven and there are
- 6:33multiple rounds. And it's, it's harder for, it's
- 6:36easier to redeem yourself if you do something poorly in the NFL,
- 6:40you could get one game and then that might be it.
- 6:43And then you come back next year and you get one more game.
- 6:46And if you play poorly, that might be it.
- 6:48And I think NFL fan bases are so distorted and legacies are so
- 6:52distorted by the few teams and coaches and players that succeed
- 6:58so much in the post season. And I'm thinking particularly
- 7:03right now of the Chiefs and Andy Reid and Mahomes and what
- 7:07they're doing, potentially going to a third straight Super Bowl
- 7:11and and winning a championship 3 peating, which no one has ever
- 7:15done, getting a fourth title already for them, for that
- 7:18group, which would be incredible.
- 7:20I think this is Mahomes seventh years, a starting quarterback.
- 7:23And then before that, obviously what Brady and Belichick did
- 7:26together in New England. Those two runs make everything
- 7:32pale in comparison. And so then you look at a
- 7:34quarterback like Jackson, who I think now is three and five in
- 7:37the playoffs and it looks terrible when really if you
- 7:41watch that game, you saw it. They could.
- 7:42Baltimore could have easily won that game if a few things go
- 7:46differently. They're now in the AFC
- 7:48Championship where they would probably be favored against the
- 7:51Chiefs, or at least it would be a toss up.
- 7:54You look at Buffalo, too, with Josh Allen now, they got the win
- 7:57here. Allen's had more success than
- 8:00Lamar Jackson has, but he hasn't broken through.
- 8:03And a large part of that is because they get beat by the
- 8:06Chiefs. It's happened to them several
- 8:08times during this run where they've been good.
- 8:10And we'll see. Maybe it happens again Sunday in
- 8:13a year where it looks like Buffalo's probably better or at
- 8:16least equal to Kansas City on a new on a neutral field.
- 8:20I think Kansas City's A2 point favorite.
- 8:22They always say you get 3, you know, roughly for being at home.
- 8:25So that would lead you to believe that this game run a
- 8:26neutral field. It would be even or Buffalo
- 8:28might be a slight favorite, but I think the greatness of the
- 8:32historic greatness of the Kansas City Chiefs under Reed and with
- 8:37Mahomes and QB, it, it just boxes everybody else out and
- 8:42diminishes everybody else. And so other fan bases I think
- 8:47have a a distorted sense of what success looks like because they
- 8:52think it should be like the Chiefs or like the Patriots
- 8:55before them. And that is just not realistic.
- 8:58Yeah, You know, I, I like Pat Mahomes.
- 9:00I like the Chiefs. Andy Reed, Travis Kelsey.
- 9:03So I was rooting for them in previous years, but now it's
- 9:07getting to the point where I'm kind of tired of them.
- 9:09And and it has nothing to do with, you know, some people
- 9:11don't like Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey and all that.
- 9:14It's it's nothing about any of the players.
- 9:16It's not about Jackson Mahomes. I just feel like after a while I
- 9:20like to see new teams win. Like I would like to see Josh
- 9:23Allen breakthrough. I wanted to see Lamar Jackson
- 9:26breakthrough just because I feel like we've seen a ton of Pat
- 9:30Mahomes and he's unbelievable. I will, I will say this and that
- 9:33team's unbelievable. And they haven't.
- 9:35I watched a decent amount of that game and I know the
- 9:38storyline afterwards, it's still being talked about, was the fact
- 9:42that the Chiefs were getting every single call there.
- 9:45And I'll tell you what, from what I was watching, I have to
- 9:49agree. It did seem like the Chiefs were
- 9:51getting just about every 5050 call in that game.
- 9:55And I think that may work against them coming up this
- 9:59week. You know, a lot of people are
- 10:00saying all the Chiefs and the NFL they're in, they're in bed
- 10:02with each other. But to me, that was such a
- 10:04storyline, especially on social media, but also with all the
- 10:07talk shows and all that. These refs are, are human
- 10:10beings. And the last thing you want is
- 10:13to have another game like this where it seems like Pat Mahomes
- 10:16is getting the benefit of the doubt on every single call from
- 10:20from what I saw, and I didn't watch the entire game, but I
- 10:22agree with the narrative there. It sure does seem like you can't
- 10:26touch Pat Mahomes. It was hard to watch some of
- 10:29those plays and not think that there was, that they were biased
- 10:33towards the Chiefs. Now, that doesn't mean that the
- 10:34refs intentionally, by the way, or had a plan or like it was a
- 10:39league conspiracy, right? If you watch the NFL, you know
- 10:44that quarterbacks near the sideline or quarterbacks in the
- 10:48pocket or quarterbacks running, basically anytime the
- 10:51quarterback has the ball and a defensive player is near him and
- 10:55there's what looks like rough contact, a lot of times the flag
- 10:59is gonna come out whether it was legitimate or not.
- 11:02And I think that's what happened with Mahomes.
- 11:04And Mahomes is smart. He baits the refs.
- 11:07He he's like, it's like flopping what he does.
- 11:10He waits until the absolute last second to slide.
- 11:14If he's along the sideline, he sort of hangs out right at the
- 11:19edge waiting for someone to push him or hit him.
- 11:22And in real time, it is really hard for officials to tell if
- 11:27there is, if a play that looks bad actually is bad.
- 11:31And we saw in replay that the flags that the Texans got on the
- 11:34roughing the passer, on the unnecessary roughness where
- 11:37Mahomes ran, When you watch them in slow motion, you can see they
- 11:40shouldn't, they should not have been thrown.
- 11:42But that, again, that doesn't mean that the league is telling
- 11:45the officials, hey, we got to protect the Chiefs and Mahomes.
- 11:48What the league is telling the officials is we need to protect
- 11:50quarterbacks. And when there's questionable
- 11:54calls, often times they go in favor of the quarterback.
- 11:58That's kind of a league wide thing.
- 12:00But of course, everyone's watching these games in huge
- 12:04numbers and they're they're the most, you know, the stakes are
- 12:06obviously the biggest in the play offs.
- 12:08And there's the narrative out there that the league favors the
- 12:12Chiefs, wants the Chiefs. Taylor Swift is there, right?
- 12:14The league wants her for network broadcast so they can pan to her
- 12:19after every time Kelsey makes a catch.
- 12:20So the conspiracy theories are there.
- 12:22I don't think it's a conspiracy by the league or the officials.
- 12:25I do think in that game in particular, the Chiefs got some
- 12:29great calls. That said, I've watched football
- 12:32for a long time. I, I hate when people blame the
- 12:34officials. You, if you play well enough,
- 12:38you can overcome that stuff almost always.
- 12:40And that's just the reality of of that's what you're losing.
- 12:43Teams point to the officials that complain and bitch, and
- 12:46that doesn't mean they're wrong, that the officials hurt them,
- 12:50that it wasn't exactly down the middle.
- 12:53But you know what? The Texans had their chances in
- 12:55that game. The Chiefs are not some
- 12:57juggernaut anymore and they didn't execute enough to win.
- 13:00So I I don't have a ton of sympathy for that.
- 13:03I think that is the way of the league where quarterbacks are
- 13:07going to get the benefit of the doubt on those very questionable
- 13:10calls. And that's just kind of how it
- 13:12is. And Mahomes is really good at at
- 13:15drawing that kind of like a great NBA flopper or a soccer
- 13:19flopper, someone who's really good at making things that
- 13:23aren't necessarily penalties look like penalties.
- 13:26That's a skill and Mahomes is is very skilled at it.
- 13:32What do you think about the snow games?
- 13:33I know that's been talked about a lot as well.
- 13:36I like a snow game here and there, but to have a bunch of
- 13:40them in the play offs. I, I do wonder if if that's what
- 13:43you want as a league with everything on the line to have
- 13:47weather play such a determining factor.
- 13:50And then again, it gets back to the game.
- 13:52I I was talking about earlier. You're not going to have the
- 13:55commanders versus the lions 42 points of exciting.
- 13:59And look, people want points. They just do every once in a
- 14:04while to watch a 1310 game is fun to see one snow game here or
- 14:08there is fun, but I don't know if you want half your games to
- 14:12be snow games, right? People are going to watch when
- 14:15you're scoring 42 points in the second quarter.
- 14:18That's what made that so entertaining.
- 14:20And the fact that you look, you can't play defense like you
- 14:22could in the past anyway. The NFL, they are opening up the
- 14:26the rule book. So everything does favor
- 14:28offenses. That's what people want to see.
- 14:30I just, I just wonder if you want to have so many of these
- 14:34games be in the snow in the playoffs when everybody's
- 14:38watching, when everything is on the line.
- 14:40I, I don't, I don't think you want weather to be that big of a
- 14:43factor. And it does seem like about half
- 14:46the games have been impacted by snow here for the NFL.
- 14:49Yeah, it just so happened the games this year in a lot of them
- 14:52in cold weather cities with the Arctic blast we saw, you know,
- 14:55all over the Northeast. It helped produce, produce snow
- 14:58even down in the the Gulf of Mexico.
- 15:00I'm, I mean, the Gulf of America that we saw.
- 15:02Yeah, recently. So I think I agree with you.
- 15:05Sorry, I caught myself there Saturday night.
- 15:08That game was way more exciting than the two Sunday.
- 15:11And the elements had a a lot to do with that.
- 15:13There's a question about it. I don't mind the elements every
- 15:15once in a while. Like you said, I think it looks
- 15:16cool. There's a there's a certain
- 15:18legacy there and nostalgia for like the Ice Bowl and the frozen
- 15:23tundra of Lambeau Field and seeing the guy's breath.
- 15:27But I think for just aesthetically for what what I
- 15:30think the modern NFL fan likes, I think we like the the big
- 15:34plays and the weather when it affects the quality of the play.
- 15:40You saw that Sunday guys were slipping, guys dropped balls
- 15:44that they probably wouldn't have dropped if it were, you know,
- 15:4815° warmer. There weren't the the moisture
- 15:51on the ball where where people were losing control.
- 15:54So I think I, I tend to agree with you, but I don't really
- 15:58know if there's a good solution for that because you're not all
- 16:00of a sudden going to move these games to neutral field and
- 16:03you're not going to build Dome stadiums in these these cities.
- 16:07But I want to say more, one more thing about what you said about
- 16:10the Chiefs, 'cause I, as much as I don't like people complaining
- 16:13about their ass, I think it is becoming a problem for the NFL
- 16:17when people feel like there is a bias.
- 16:20And so I, it's gonna be really interesting this week with
- 16:23everybody watching to see which way the flags go because you I,
- 16:28I'm sure you were on X as I was either during or right after
- 16:34that Chiefs games. And some of the memes, some of
- 16:36them were angry, some of them were just hilarious.
- 16:39Like the AI where Mahomes is kissing the official.
- 16:42Did you see that one right before the game?
- 16:44The AI image, it's it, the narrative now is set in place.
- 16:48And so everybody's going to be looking.
- 16:51It's like confirmation bias, right?
- 16:52If you are looking for something, you will probably
- 16:56find it. And everybody's going to be
- 16:58looking in that game who's not a Chiefs fan for any kind of bias
- 17:02that that goes against the Bills.
- 17:04It's funny you mention that. I was literally about to say
- 17:06that. And that's, that's really what I
- 17:08was alluding to. I think, you know, by now I
- 17:10consume more of my news and sports from X than I do actually
- 17:14watching the games. So again, I didn't watch that
- 17:17entire game, but when I saw it, I was like, again, I'm not
- 17:21saying that the Chiefs won because of that, but it did seem
- 17:25like they were getting the benefit of the doubt.
- 17:27And then when you do go to X and you have AI or Grok, and it's
- 17:32not just pictures, it's also video.
- 17:34Now you got video of Patrick Mahomes making out with the
- 17:38refs. I think somebody photoshopped a
- 17:39picture where Andy Reid was on his knees around the refs.
- 17:44You're seeing a lot of stuff like that.
- 17:46And again, that's kind of where I get my news.
- 17:49So I find it funny. And, and again, the Chief, Sir,
- 17:53they're unbelievable regardless, but it but it is becoming a
- 17:56story which the NFL doesn't want.
- 17:59I agree with you there. How about Mark Andrews though?
- 18:01And I wanted to look up his numbers.
- 18:03I mean, Mark Andrews is a really good player, really good tight
- 18:07end. He's got what, 436 career
- 18:10catches, 5500 yards, 51 touchdowns.
- 18:14And look, everybody wants to be a professional athlete.
- 18:17Hell, I did when I was a kid. And you want all the the glory
- 18:21and the touchdowns and the money and the Super Bowl and all that.
- 18:23But man, no matter what Mark Andrews ever does and he's had a
- 18:27hell of a career, that's going to be the one thing that
- 18:30everybody remembers. That's that's Jackie Smith right
- 18:32there. That pass.
- 18:34I mean, what do you think it was?
- 18:36Was it less than the the ball traveling from Lamar Jackson's
- 18:39hands to Mark Andrews? Was it 8 yards, whatever it was?
- 18:43I mean, just a little flick right in his bread basket and he
- 18:47drops that. And again, I know he makes a lot
- 18:49of money, but man, I feel bad for for guys like that.
- 18:52Like he'll never be able to live that down.
- 18:54Now, if they if they win a Super Bowl next year, OK, people may
- 18:57be quiet, but like, that's one that sticks with you.
- 18:59Yeah, and, and look, there's no guarantee you're going to get
- 19:02back there. Lamar could get hurt.
- 19:04Every season is a new season. I thought Brady made that point
- 19:06when he was broadcasting the game over the weekend.
- 19:09It's like look at Dan Marino. He made the Super Bowl in his
- 19:12first year as a rookie. I don't think he ever ever got
- 19:14back one of the all time great quarterbacks in NFL.
- 19:16And now his legacy is tarnished in part in large part because of
- 19:20that, because nobody like you look at Marino's numbers, but he
- 19:24did. He was putting up numbers like
- 19:25quarterbacks from today in an era when nobody else was doing
- 19:28that. Now people have passed him by
- 19:30since then because the the the roles are completely different.
- 19:33The game is completely different.
- 19:35But if, if Marino with his ability played today, he would
- 19:38have numbers that would be in the top five all time, probably
- 19:42in yards and touchdowns. And he did until these modern
- 19:45passes came around and passed him.
- 19:46But his legacy's forever tarnished.
- 19:48It's one of one of the reasons I don't like the legacy and the
- 19:51narrative of putting everything or putting so much on playoff
- 19:56success in general, but championships in particular,
- 19:59because I think it distorts so many guys careers in all of the.
- 20:03Sports and I think it's especially not fair in football
- 20:06because as I said, it's so often comes out to just one game one
- 20:10time. And Mark Andrews is a great
- 20:12player. I mean, I haven't looked at his
- 20:14numbers, but he seems strikes me as like a if he keeps doing this
- 20:17for a few more years like a borderline Hall of Fame tight
- 20:20end. I mean really good player.
- 20:22And now if if they don't get back there or they don't have
- 20:25success when they do, he's going to be remembered partially for
- 20:28that. And I said the same thing about
- 20:30Lamar Jackson, who has not played well in the playoffs.
- 20:32But that's why I I said earlier, don't let the success of the
- 20:37Chiefs dynasty distort. What typically happens with
- 20:41players and coaches in the post season is that they lose a lot.
- 20:44If you I was talking about this like Tomlin, 'cause I'm a
- 20:47Steeler fan. So many Steeler fans wanna get
- 20:49rid of Tomlin, which to me, I understand that the steel that
- 20:54he's not a perfect coach and I have my issues with him.
- 20:57But the Steelers leadership wisely chose to keep him around
- 21:01because he gets you in the mix every year.
- 21:05And yes, they haven't. They've they've, I've lost their
- 21:07last, I think six playoff games, haven't won a playoff game since
- 21:102016, which is a hell of a bad run.
- 21:12But if you look at the numbers and the coaches all time and
- 21:17you, you sort of just look at the top, say 20 coaches for
- 21:20career wins and you look at their playoff records, almost
- 21:23all of them are right around 500.
- 21:26A few games below, a few games above.
- 21:29The exceptions, Obviously we know Reed Belichick, but those
- 21:33are not the role. Those are the exceptions.
- 21:35Why? Because it's really hard to win
- 21:39playoff games in the NFL. And it often times it comes down
- 21:43to the weather, luck, who has the ball last, that those kinds
- 21:49of things. And that now all of a sudden
- 21:51defines your legacy forever. And I just don't think that's
- 21:55fair. And I think it distorts how we
- 21:56look at players and and at teams.
- 22:00Yeah, I don't think it's fair, but I also get it especially for
- 22:04for quarterbacks and and everybody knows it's the old
- 22:06saying that head coaches and quarterbacks, you get too much
- 22:09credit when things are going well.
- 22:11You get too much blame when things aren't going well.
- 22:13But I do think if, if you have a long tenure in the league and if
- 22:18you're, if you're playing 15 years, pushing 20 years and
- 22:22you've been to the playoffs a bunch of times and you're
- 22:24starting to have a bunch of different games.
- 22:26I, I do think it's fair, for example, that the narrative
- 22:29around Lamar Jackson to me is, is fair.
- 22:32Like he has to do it. I'm not saying he stinks.
- 22:35I mean, he's obviously great. He's going to be a Hall of
- 22:36Famer, he's an MVP. But I do think if we're still
- 22:40talking about this five years from now and we're talking about
- 22:42a decade's worth of of playoff failure, I mean, you do have to
- 22:47get to a Super Bowl or, or try to win a Super Bowl or win one.
- 22:51Look, look at Aaron Rodgers. I say this about Aaron Rodgers.
- 22:54As great as Aaron Rodgers is, and I think Aaron Rodgers might
- 22:57be the best thrower of the football that I've ever seen in
- 23:01my lifetime. And Aaron Rodgers has that one
- 23:03Super Bowl. But I think it's also fair to
- 23:06say that again, maybe he's getting too much blame as the
- 23:08quarterback, but I think he's kind of underperformed in the
- 23:12playoffs. And I'm, I'm looking that as how
- 23:14how long has he been in the league?
- 23:1515, whatever it's been 17 years, won Super Bowl.
- 23:19But he's also had a lot of great teams, a lot of great defenses
- 23:24with the Packers. So I think that's fair too,
- 23:26especially if you've been in the league for a long, long time.
- 23:29Of course, nobody's going to be like Brady Mahomes is close, but
- 23:34that that is not the norm, as you said.
- 23:37But if you've been in for for 15 years, like Joe Burrow, Joe
- 23:40Burrow could be a Dan Marino situation, right?
- 23:43Joe Burrow gets the Super Bowl early, he may never get there
- 23:46again. And he's a great player, right?
- 23:49Well, and and with Lamar, the reason that there is fairness to
- 23:53that argument right now is because he has it.
- 23:56He is underperformed individually in the postseason
- 24:00so much compared to what his regular season numbers are that
- 24:03is. So that's why there is some
- 24:05fairness to it with Lamar Jackson now, but I would just
- 24:08make 2 points. First of all, if you look at his
- 24:10overall line against Buffalo, remember in the elements, 18 of
- 24:1325254, two touchdowns, 1 interception.
- 24:17He had the fumble, of course, a quarterback rating of 114.4.
- 24:20And if Andrews doesn't drop that pass, there's a decent chance
- 24:24they're going to overtime and then who knows what happens.
- 24:26So he a, he did not play that badly at all.
- 24:30Would you consider what was going on?
- 24:33But also, I think if Lamar Jackson gets back there enough
- 24:36and has the opportunities, he will do okay.
- 24:40He'll do fine. He'll probably have a run where
- 24:42his team gets to the Super Bowl. He'll he'll lose some more
- 24:45playoff games. My point is he'll be typical of
- 24:47what you expect, which is guys to in the postseason to lose a
- 24:54bunch of games and win some games and occasionally make a
- 24:56run. That's the norm.
- 24:57That's what happens for most guys.
- 24:59You pointed out Aaron Rodgers is a, is, is a great example of
- 25:02that. I think about Ben
- 25:04Roethlisberger, again, Steeler fan here, won two Super Bowls,
- 25:08but he lost 1 and in one of the ones he won, they won.
- 25:11It wasn't because of him. It was in spite of him.
- 25:13If you remember the a long time ago against the Seahawks, he
- 25:16played terrible in that game. They won the Super Bowl anyway.
- 25:19So he gets so that's the thing with judging quarterbacks based
- 25:22on team successes. Sometimes the team plays bad and
- 25:27you play great and you lose and sometimes the team plays really
- 25:30well and you don't play that well and you win and you get all
- 25:33the credit and it. We do this in sports.
- 25:35It's not just the NFL. One of the things about the NBA
- 25:38that bothers me with the LeBron Jordan debate is how people
- 25:42point to Jordan 6 and O in the finals and act like that's the
- 25:46end of the argument. Where is LeBron?
- 25:47I think is what, 4 and four and six?
- 25:50I think in the Finals he's been, I think he'd been to the Finals
- 25:5210 times off the top of my head. So that means Jordan's
- 25:55automatically better. Well, Jordan, what about all the
- 25:59years he didn't get there, all the years the Pistons beat them,
- 26:02the year he came back? People forget that year after
- 26:06his first retirement and they they lost in the playoffs.
- 26:08They didn't even make it to the conference finals that year.
- 26:11That is like a race because all that matters is you won the
- 26:15championship. But it's also getting there,
- 26:18getting there and getting into the postseason and having the
- 26:22the roll of the dice. Like even even as great as Brady
- 26:25was, they lost how many times in the in the playoffs?
- 26:29They lost twice in the Super Bowl, right two to the.
- 26:32Giants Super Bowl one lost to the Eagles.
- 26:35Two to the Giants and they lost to the Eagles, said the three
- 26:38times he was beaten in the Super Bowl.
- 26:40Does that mean does that make Brady less quarterback?
- 26:43Of course. But it actually makes him more
- 26:46of a quarterback great, more of a great all time great losing
- 26:49those games because he got them there.
- 26:52Like I would much rather get to 1012 title games and lose half
- 26:57of them then get to five and win them all.
- 26:59Because there's a, there's something about getting there
- 27:02and when you have exposure, everybody fails.
- 27:07That's the thing. When you are there enough and
- 27:10enough time goes by, everyone is going to fail.
- 27:13Everyone is going to have bad moments.
- 27:16And because we look at those few guys who under the right
- 27:20circumstances didn't, or we forget about the times they lost
- 27:24and didn't get there, we then think that's the standard,
- 27:27right? Everyone's just got to be
- 27:28amazing and always step up in the big moments.
- 27:30And that's just not how it works.
- 27:33It didn't work for that way for Brady.
- 27:35It didn't even work that way for like Jordan, even though we
- 27:37think it did because nobody remembers the years the Pistons
- 27:39beat his brains out early in his career.
- 27:42He gets like a pass for those like, what if they would have
- 27:45gone to the Finals and lost those years?
- 27:48It's almost like he would have been.
- 27:50He's for legacy. It's better for Jordan that they
- 27:55lost earlier. Think about how crazy that is.
- 27:59It's worse for Lebron's legacy that he drug a fairly mediocre
- 28:04Cavaliers team to the Finals when he was 22 years old and got
- 28:08stomped by the Spurs. That tarnishes his legacy.
- 28:11It would have been better for LeBron if they would have won
- 28:13forty games and not made the playoffs.
- 28:15In some people's minds. Not in my mind.
- 28:17In my mind, it's amazing that he got that Cavaliers team to the
- 28:21final. It's a amazing that he got some
- 28:24of those other later in his career, Cavaliers teams in the
- 28:26Finals against really good Warriors teams and got beat by
- 28:29Steph Curry and Kevin Durant. Like that doesn't tarnish his
- 28:32legacy. It enhances it at at least you
- 28:35know how I look at it. So I know I kind of went off on
- 28:37a tangent there, but it's kind of the broader way that I think
- 28:40as sports fans we're so obsessed with did you win the
- 28:45championship? Did you?
- 28:47As if that's the only thing that matters and the standard, it
- 28:51distorts everything else. Yeah, that's what happened.
- 28:53Like I said with Mike Tomlin, people take it for granted.
- 28:58It's not easy to get to the playoffs almost every year, to
- 29:01fight to be in playoff contention every year.
- 29:03Ask, ask Lions fans up until the last few years, ask Jets fans,
- 29:08ask the Commanders fans how hard it is to get to a championship
- 29:11game. They're there for the first time
- 29:13since 1991. I think some of these fan bases
- 29:16get spoiled. It's it's not easy.
- 29:19It it doesn't happen automatically.
- 29:22It's funny, I've had that same argument on the radio many times
- 29:25over the years, and I've said basically the exact same thing.
- 29:29It is the dumbest thing ever to punish LeBron or punish Brady
- 29:34because it it's like, think of it like the Olympics.
- 29:37You're essentially saying that it's better to get a bronze
- 29:40medal or no medal at all than to get a silver medal.
- 29:44It's the dumbest thing. Obviously everybody wants gold,
- 29:47Everybody wants a championship, but look at it like from a
- 29:49college football standpoint, Ohio State has finished second
- 29:54in the country a lot since I've been an adult.
- 29:57The Florida game, LSU going back, they lost to Alabama a
- 30:01couple years ago. And so then Ohio State gets shit
- 30:04on, especially if they if they really get their ass kicked in
- 30:06that game, which which they have a couple of those times.
- 30:08But also you finished second in the country and it's the same
- 30:11with LeBron. LeBron finished second in the
- 30:14NBA. That is way better than losing
- 30:17in the Eastern Conference finals or earlier to the Pistons.
- 30:20Makes absolutely no sense. I've been saying that for years
- 30:23about LeBron and people compare Joe Montana to Tom Brady getting
- 30:28the anytime you get deeper in the play offs it's better.
- 30:31Anytime you win another series, it's better.
- 30:34That's insane. Let's let's do a college
- 30:38football now. The old Buckeyes finally
- 30:41breakthrough win a national championship, first one since
- 30:45the 2014 season. And I am an Ohio State fan.
- 30:49I, I will say this though, Ohio State has had incredible teams
- 30:56almost every year that I can remember.
- 30:58I'm, I'm talking about, you can go back to John Cooper.
- 31:01We're talking about 30 to 35 years worth of teams where
- 31:05they're basically 11:00 and 1:00 or 10:00 and 2:00 going into the
- 31:08whatever bowl season or Big 10 championship almost every year.
- 31:13And so they breakthrough, they win a national championship.
- 31:16And I'm not trying to be greedy here.
- 31:18Ohio State probably should win a national championship with the
- 31:21resources they have once every decade or so.
- 31:24When when you think back, and I'm thinking back about all the
- 31:27great teams they've had under, first of all, don't even go back
- 31:30to John Cooper where they lost in Michigan every every year.
- 31:33But Jim Tressel, amazing teams, Urban Meyer, unbelievable teams,
- 31:39Ryan Day, I mean, NFL guys all over these rosters.
- 31:44But also this Ohio State dynasty, which has gone on
- 31:47really, like I said, 20-30 years.
- 31:49They've also ran up into a generational run by the SEC for
- 31:55a good 17 year period. And also just an unbelievable
- 31:59run by Nick Saban in Alabama. And when you you started this
- 32:03conversation talking about Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes and
- 32:06what those guys did Belichick pay Patriots and Mahomes, Reed,
- 32:11Chiefs, that's not normal. What Nick Saban did under
- 32:15Alabama with Alabama may never be done again.
- 32:17Like there's a lot of teams that don't have national
- 32:20championships or they only have one.
- 32:22I mean, whoever you want to talk about, Oklahoma, Ohio State,
- 32:25LSU, Georgia, for about 15 years, Alabama was amazing and
- 32:31they blocked a lot of a lot of other really great teams and
- 32:34programs from winning national championships.
- 32:37Yeah, just think about it this way.
- 32:38What active coach has the most national championships now?
- 32:41Is there any active coach that has more than one?
- 32:44So Dabo has 2 with Clemson Abbo. Have two, yeah.
- 32:49And Kirby Smart has 2 with George.
- 32:51Sabin and to some extent Dabo as well, blocks so many people.
- 32:55Now, I'm just gonna slightly contradict what I said earlier
- 32:59because I think college sports is so different than pro sports.
- 33:02In college sports, I think in pro sports the default
- 33:06expectation is it's pretty good if you get into the mix a lot.
- 33:10Like that's typically what happens.
- 33:11You get into the mix and then once you're in the playoffs,
- 33:13you'll win some, you'll lose some.
- 33:14And if over enough time, if you get enough chances, you'll
- 33:17probably be somewhere around even because the playoffs are
- 33:21really hard. In college football, it's
- 33:22different because there, there's no salary cap.
- 33:25The institutional advantages of, like you said, Ohio State, Notre
- 33:28Dame, Alabama, Michigan, a few other schools are so vast that
- 33:34you're you shouldn't be judged on the standard of it's pretty
- 33:38good if you get in the mix. You should be judged on the
- 33:40standard. If you have such a massive
- 33:42advantage now, to some degree NIL both enhances that
- 33:48advantage, but also could minimize it at places like
- 33:53Colorado, right where now, if you get the right coach and you
- 33:57have the right cachet and the right brand and the right
- 33:59boosters that have a collective now maybe you can erase that
- 34:04advantage that the good old boys have had.
- 34:06So that is possible, but the way that it's existed for the most
- 34:10part up until the last year or two is that those schools have
- 34:13had such an advantage that they should be judged on a different
- 34:15standard. And that standard is competing
- 34:18for titles often, right? And Ohio State is definitely one
- 34:22of those schools. And that's why Ryan Day was on
- 34:23the hot seat, even though, did you see that graphic they had
- 34:26during the national championship game where they had the highest
- 34:30winning percentages in college football history from a coach
- 34:34with more than 50 games? And it was like Knut Rockne,
- 34:39Walter Camp, who helped invent modern football, and Ryan Day.
- 34:43There were four dudes, Ryan Day, and then the other three dudes
- 34:47had black and white photos. That's how long ago they coached
- 34:51is. They couldn't even have colored
- 34:53photos of these guys. So that shows you Ryan Day, how
- 34:57how historically amazing he has been at Ohio State that not only
- 35:01is he better than any current coach in terms of wedding
- 35:03percentage, in order to find comps, you have to go back to
- 35:06guys who coached when they didn't even have, you know,
- 35:09color photos available. It's funny because I I did a
- 35:11radio quick little little radio hit this morning with the the
- 35:15morning after talking about Ohio State because I couldn't do it
- 35:18yesterday. And they were giving me some
- 35:20shit too, because I I did say after the Michigan game, yeah.
- 35:23So Ryan Day is 70 and 10 overall, 70 and 10.
- 35:28And I was look, look, did I go a little overboard?
- 35:33Sure. But also Brian Day had not won a
- 35:36big game in four years. And I hate the fact that I have
- 35:40to keep bringing this up because I'm happy Ryan Day one.
- 35:43It was not personal, But when people like Kirk Herbstreit talk
- 35:47about the lunatic fringe and all that, I'm thinking, well, he has
- 35:51to win a big game, right? Like 70 and 10 is is great.
- 35:57But if you're losing to Michigan every year and you don't win any
- 36:00Big 10 championships and you don't win a national
- 36:02championship, again, the standard at Ohio State is
- 36:05different when you have $20 million rosters and you have NFL
- 36:09players up and down your roster. And so again, I'm happy Ryan Day
- 36:14one, but I think the criticism was 100% valid and now he's a
- 36:19legend. But you have to do it.
- 36:21I mean, you'll get the great coaches at Ohio State.
- 36:22I looked this up, Paul Brown, Woody Hayes, Jim Tressel, Urban
- 36:28Meyer, and now Ryan Day is in that list, but John Cooper
- 36:31isn't. And John Cooper was a great
- 36:33coach and hell, they were 11 O or freaking 10 and one every
- 36:37year they played Michigan, but he lost in Michigan.
- 36:39I think his record was like 2-9 and one or whatever it is.
- 36:43So my thing is like, I'm very happy Ohio State won.
- 36:47But it also everybody's like, oh, you guys were all calling
- 36:50for Ryan. First of all, nobody reasonable
- 36:52that I know wanted him fired mid season.
- 36:55But they just said, hey, coach either beat Michigan 50% of the
- 36:59time or win just a national championship, which may seem
- 37:03like a lot, but in six years you've got a top five team every
- 37:08single year. I don't even think that's that
- 37:10crazy of expectations. So again, I'm very happy they
- 37:13won and I hope he stays forever. And guess what?
- 37:16They can probably lose the Michigan for the next 5 years
- 37:18now. But he's built up that equity.
- 37:20But the point is you have to do it.
- 37:23You have to win the games. Like this is this is the big
- 37:26leagues, man. That's what Tim McCarver used to
- 37:28always say. This is Ohio State, this is what
- 37:30you signed up for. And that's why I'm glad Urban
- 37:32Meyer. Urban Meyer kind of pushed back
- 37:34when people were criticizing the fans.
- 37:36He's like he he said something was a great clip.
- 37:39It was going around on social media.
- 37:41And he goes, yeah, well, you know, a player would tell me,
- 37:43oh, man, like I fumble the ball and everybody on social media
- 37:47has ripped me. And he'd be like, well, don't
- 37:48fumble the ball, right? I mean, Ohio State, like this is
- 37:52Ohio State. This is what you're supposed to
- 37:54do. You're you're set up to succeed.
- 37:56They're giving you every resource.
- 37:58They're literally giving you money now.
- 38:00You have facilities, you have the transfer portal.
- 38:03You have the most talented roster.
- 38:05The fans just want you to just to to win some games to beat
- 38:08Michigan when you're a three touchdown favorite, right?
- 38:11That's not too much to ask, I didn't think.
- 38:13I think with all of these things we're discussing, it's all about
- 38:16the context that and that is what you lose so much when you
- 38:19just boil it down to record or isolate an individual
- 38:23performance here or there. And the context matters.
- 38:27And so in this case, the context of Ryan Day is they had an
- 38:32incredible amount of talent and everyone saw it.
- 38:36And Michigan was really down from what they had been.
- 38:41And you lose that game after losing to an Oregon team that a
- 38:45nice team, but a team you're at least as good in, if as if not
- 38:49better. And I think they proved in the
- 38:50playoff they were better when they they beat them the second
- 38:54time around. And so there that I think is
- 38:56fair to criticize him for that, even though at the same time you
- 39:00acknowledge everyone acknowledges the record overall
- 39:02is amazing because it is not anywhere close to a level
- 39:05playing field like the NFL or like major pro sports.
- 39:09And if particularly this year, and that's why the context is so
- 39:13important, like a guy can play great or and lose and then
- 39:20people will tarnish his legacy. And it's like, well, no, he did.
- 39:23He actually did his part and it wasn't his fault with Day.
- 39:26It was like, well, you have such an advantage over Michigan.
- 39:30If you lose that game, it is kind of on you.
- 39:34And it is fair to criticize you because the game plan wasn't
- 39:37very good and you have the superior athletes and you've got
- 39:40to get it done. And he did and credit to him.
- 39:43But I agree with you, it was not despite the record, because of
- 39:47the context. It was not crazy to call him out
- 39:51and say is this the right guy? Because it's all it always comes
- 39:54down to is the person, the player, the coach, maximizing
- 39:58what they have and and doing the best they can to put themselves
- 40:03in position. And in that Michigan game, I
- 40:06don't think there's any way you could say Ryan Day is maximizing
- 40:09what he has. Credit to him and the team for
- 40:12turning it around. They had apparently, you know,
- 40:14they were talking about starting the broadcast to kind of come to
- 40:17Jesus meeting where they all got together and and kind of hashed
- 40:21everything out. And he deserves a lot of credit
- 40:23for that. But it was totally fair, I
- 40:25think, for Ohio State fans to hold his feet to the fire given
- 40:27the incredible advantages that he has, particularly this year.
- 40:31Like it. The talent may not always be
- 40:34that great. The talent disparity, certainly
- 40:36it won't be. I don't think with Michigan most
- 40:37years, but it was this year. In 2024, it was.
- 40:42Yeah, I, I think this is another interesting part about the
- 40:45College Football Playoff. When you, when you think about
- 40:47the College Football Playoff going from four teams to 12, in
- 40:51my head I said, oh, that's going to help out kind of the the old
- 40:54misses of the world, the Missouri's of the world.
- 40:57I think you're going to see make these playoffs.
- 40:59You know, it's kind of the kind of the second tier of these
- 41:02conferences that usually didn't get to make the the top four.
- 41:06You're going to see a lot of these teams make the 12 team
- 41:09playoff. And I, and I think that's great.
- 41:10But here's what's crazy. You can make the argument that
- 41:13the 12 team playoff is going to help maybe Ohio State
- 41:17specifically, but teams like Ohio State even more.
- 41:20And this is off the top of my head, but in the in the 10 years
- 41:23of the College Football Playoff 14, Ohio State won it all the
- 41:28first year. I think they got there about
- 41:31half the time. I I can look this up, I bet you
- 41:33they got to the to the final 4-5 or six times.
- 41:36I think they were fifth. They were either 5th or 6th
- 41:40every other year. So literally every year they
- 41:43didn't make the playoff, they were the first team out, maybe
- 41:46the second team out and they might have been the first team
- 41:49out. Literally every year they didn't
- 41:50make it. It was that close because that's
- 41:53how good they were. They were.
- 41:54They were always 11 and one. They lost to Michigan State the
- 41:57year after they won the national championship in a crazy game,
- 42:00never got to defend their title. There were ten and two some of
- 42:03those years. But that's what's crazy also is
- 42:06the 12 team playoff allows the the great programs that have a
- 42:11misstep or two to get in. And then it's not about eye
- 42:15test, it's about winning football games.
- 42:17That's another thing that we should bring up In any other
- 42:20year. The Michigan loss is one of the
- 42:23most devastating losses in the history of the program because
- 42:27it basically ends your season. You could have won a national
- 42:30championship, you should have won the Big 10.
- 42:33You beat Michigan. It's great.
- 42:36Last year the season would have been over, you'd have been in a
- 42:38shit bowl game that nobody cared about.
- 42:40You'd have had opt outs. Your players would already be in
- 42:43the transfer portal. So again, I love Ryan Day.
- 42:46I'm I'm happy he won. I hope he stays forever.
- 42:48He also got bailed out by the 12 team playoff.
- 42:50He had a he had a second life. A lot of teams will now have a
- 42:53second life because of the expanded playoff.
- 42:55Well, and let's be honest, those schools should make the playoff
- 42:59pretty much every year at least be in contention and having
- 43:02those big brands is great for college football in the
- 43:04postseason. And you this year the proof was
- 43:07was obvious because Ohio State and Notre Dame, the two teams
- 43:10that made into the final would not have made a four team
- 43:12playoff. They would have been the they
- 43:14would have been the 5th and six teams.
- 43:15They would have missed out and they were the two best.
- 43:17It turned out Also Arizona State would have been nowhere near A4
- 43:21team playoff and they they got in, they won their conference
- 43:26and they showed they're pretty damn good with that game against
- 43:29Texas when they very easily could have won, wanted to go to
- 43:31like 3 or 4 overtimes. So I think having the automatic
- 43:34bids for conference champions is great as long as they're not
- 43:38seeded 3 and 4, which I don't think they will be anymore.
- 43:40I think they'll change that for next year, certainly by the year
- 43:42after. So once they make that tweak, I
- 43:45think the 12 team playoffs gonna be really, really good for
- 43:48college football going forward 'cause it gives every team who's
- 43:52deserving a chance and it gives those conference champions a
- 43:56chance to. Because you just assume the Big
- 43:5812 and the ACC aren't as good. And in most years they're
- 44:01probably not. But that game showed you that
- 44:06not necessarily. And we can't just automatically
- 44:09assume now that because the Big 10 in the SEC have become these
- 44:12juggernaut conferences, that they are automatically always
- 44:15going to be superior to everybody else.
- 44:17I hope college football will fight the because what's
- 44:20happening now is the SEC in the Big 10 have so much more money
- 44:24than everybody else and so much more power.
- 44:27They're going to start to make demands.
- 44:29And you've already seen this with rumors that they're trying
- 44:31to get a number of automatic bids for their league into the
- 44:34playoff, which I think would be a mistake.
- 44:36I think you need to have it as it is now with the selection
- 44:39committee picking the teams, the at large teams and the
- 44:43conference champions going in automatically.
- 44:45And, and it's going to be really interesting to see what happens
- 44:47with that going forward, because that's going to be a big fight
- 44:50for the future of college football, along with how you
- 44:52regulate NIL. And, and because the the Big 10
- 44:56in the SEC, the gap now between them and everyone else is so big
- 45:00and growing that they're going to start demanding more and more
- 45:03power. And they may just try to break
- 45:04away and, and do their own thing.
- 45:06And that's really the danger with college football is you get
- 45:09to a point where the disparity is so big that you essentially
- 45:12either have to do whatever the Big 10 and the SEC want to to
- 45:17advantage them, or they just leave and do their own thing.
- 45:22So this this show, which was very political in, in 2024,
- 45:26we're trying to be a little more light hearted and more sportsy
- 45:30here in 2025. But you did have the
- 45:32inauguration and Eric, your big political guy, for people who
- 45:36don't know he, he contributes on on Fox News.
- 45:40And I'll be honest, I did not watch live one second of the
- 45:45inauguration because it was a holiday.
- 45:48We're doing stuff with the kids. We went to a slide park and all
- 45:51that. And just like football, I
- 45:53consume a lot of this through X, through the memes and all that.
- 45:57So we talked about the, the memes of Patrick Mahomes making
- 46:00out with the refs in football. So what I saw, obviously Mark
- 46:04Zuckerberg is sneaking a look at Jeff Bezos's wife's rack.
- 46:11From what I saw, George W Bush did seem like he was on
- 46:14something. What did I miss, though?
- 46:16Those were the, those are the two that I really, I, I know the
- 46:20things I saw about Baron Trump being tall.
- 46:22I saw all the ones that were distorted.
- 46:25So was there a? Was there an image where it was
- 46:28a real one that looked just ridiculous?
- 46:31Oh, well, just him. I mean, the image that's
- 46:33distorted where he's walking behind his parents, he does look
- 46:36way taller than them in real life.
- 46:38But yeah, not quite as tall as the AI generated one.
- 46:42I thought the the Hillary Clinton laughing when Trump was
- 46:45said he was going to rename the Gulf of Mexico, Gulf of America
- 46:49was just kind of a funny moment and just Bush with his constant
- 46:52like he what he did, he looked like he I'm not, I don't think
- 46:55he did. He's kind of a goofy guy.
- 46:57That's kind of his reputation. But he looked like the guy who
- 46:59bit the gummy and then went to the serious event and you're
- 47:01like, Oh my God, Oh my God, do people know?
- 47:03Do people know that I'm high? And he was just hilarious.
- 47:06His facial expressions and all the way that he was kind of
- 47:10laughing through, pretty funny. Yeah, the Gulf of America thing,
- 47:15I think it's kind of funny there, there are some people
- 47:17that if, if you like Trump or don't like Trump, especially if
- 47:21you don't like Trump, I think that was one of the problems was
- 47:25they just they, they kind of go after everything, right?
- 47:28Even if you don't like Trump, he says a lot of things that make
- 47:32sense. And it's the same with the other
- 47:34side of the aisle. But like to get mad about Gulf
- 47:37of America. I think it's kind of funny.
- 47:39Like I, I, I'm OK with it. I mean, it's just, it's
- 47:42unnecessary. It doesn't do anything.
- 47:44It's kind of dumb, but it's also Trump.
- 47:47Whether you like Trump or not, he is a branding and promotional
- 47:53and marketing genius and doing stuff like that because it's
- 47:57obviously America first and all that.
- 47:59So now it's the Gulf of America. It works.
- 48:01Like if you have a problem with that, then you probably do, in
- 48:04my opinion, have a little bit of Trump Derangement Syndrome.
- 48:08Again, it's totally unnecessary. But also it doesn't really
- 48:10matter. You're just changing.
- 48:11I guess they have to make new maps now or new globes.
- 48:14Right. What's the it's the boy who cry
- 48:16wolf thing like the outrage. We just talked about this a lot
- 48:19last year heading up to the leading up to the election.
- 48:21If you're outraged by everything, then there's if
- 48:25everything's outrageous, then nothing is.
- 48:26And that's part of the problem and part of that is just social
- 48:29media. It fee it feeds the beast of the
- 48:34tribalism so of our politics. So you have to everything you
- 48:38have to gin up your outrage for every single thing.
- 48:40And I think people look at that and are like, OK, come on.
- 48:42And then you lose credibility when there are other things that
- 48:46really are outrageous to come along.
- 48:48Because you were the person complaining about the Gulf of
- 48:51America, Gulf of Mexico, which is kind of silly or like Elon
- 48:55Musk making some weird awkward gesture.
- 48:57And now all of a sudden you're saying he did the the Nazi
- 49:00salute? OK, so John Rybolt says hi
- 49:04Charlie and also can we talk about the Lauren Sanchez outfit?
- 49:07So that's Bezos's wife. I did see Megyn Kelly criticize
- 49:11her for that. And again, I I wasn't trying to
- 49:14look too much, but it did look. Did she almost have like a
- 49:16lingerie like well OK when I. Saw her.
- 49:20I don't believe you were trying to look too much.
- 49:22Well, what I'm saying is I, I, I see these clips, I'm I'm seeing
- 49:27the, the vertical shorts on X and all that.
- 49:29And I saw Megyn Kelly ripping on her for her outfit.
- 49:33And it did look like she maybe had, OK, she had some type of
- 49:37some type of jacket over it. But I don't know if it was like,
- 49:40was that, was it just a bra underneath it basically, was
- 49:42that what it was? It looked that way.
- 49:45Yeah, it definitely did look that way, or at least some type
- 49:48of it, some type of negligee. I mean, it definitely looked, it
- 49:54definitely looked like evening wear underneath for sure.
- 49:57And then Fetterman showed up in shorts and AT shirt or shorts
- 50:00and a sweatshirt. So I was glad to see that he
- 50:02kept it real. I, you know what there is, I'm
- 50:06kind of with Fetterman on this. I know I'm in the minority and I
- 50:09know Pete there. There's this thing you have to
- 50:10dress a certain way for different occasions.
- 50:12I do think it is weird in our society how we obsess about and
- 50:18get angry about how people dress for certain things and yet we
- 50:22don't muster up that same outrage for things that really
- 50:26matter and can affect our lives. It it is kind of a weird thing
- 50:30to me. I just, it's hard for me to get
- 50:32really upset, or upset at all for that matter, about anybody
- 50:36wearing any articles of clothing to literally anything.
- 50:41I think as long as you are covered and you're not naked,
- 50:45I'm cool. And I wouldn't even mind if
- 50:46people were naked necessarily. But I get it for our society.
- 50:49You know, people can't run around naked.
- 50:51I understand why we, we have laws against a decent exposure.
- 50:54I'm not saying that we should all be nudists.
- 50:56What I'm saying is maybe we should care a little bit less
- 51:00about what people wear and what they how they present themselves
- 51:04in their appearance and certain things and care a little bit
- 51:07more about what they say and what they do.
- 51:11And how that can affect our country.
- 51:13Let's save again. We're talking about outrage.
- 51:15Let's save the outrage for that. OK, I generally agree with you,
- 51:21but this goes back to so when I was a a sportscaster, I'm on the
- 51:25local news, it always pissed me off that I had to wear a tie.
- 51:28Why do I have to wear a tie when I'm talking about sports?
- 51:32So I I kind of agree with you. And by the way, I like
- 51:35Fetterman, and Fetterman's about the most normal Democrat you
- 51:39have these days. And you see a lot of Republicans
- 51:41now that are on the side of Fetterman.
- 51:44They're like, oh, what happened? What changed?
- 51:45And that stroke changed him. It's like, no, that's how he
- 51:48always was. But then he had a stroke and he
- 51:50had to do debates freaking right after he went through his
- 51:54stroke. I will say this as a person who
- 51:56likes Fetterman, I'm generally on his side.
- 51:59And I do like the fact that he keeps it pretty casual, but he
- 52:03takes it to an extreme, right. I mean, he looks like he's going
- 52:07to open gym. He's got and one long ass
- 52:10basketball shorts and a hooded sweatshirt.
- 52:14So for me, like don't wear a tie, but I think John Fetterman
- 52:18and I like the guy. He could wear you could even
- 52:21wear nice jeans. You could wear some of these
- 52:23nice pants guys have you could wear khaki pants.
- 52:27I mean, hell, people are wearing Jordans now as dress shoes.
- 52:31He could wear pants, some nice Jordans, and it could be 1/4 zip
- 52:37like you don't have to wear a tie.
- 52:38I do think John Fetterman takes the outfit too extreme, looking
- 52:42like a bum and I like it, but you can clean it up a little
- 52:45bit. Especially for the inauguration,
- 52:47you can wear pants. He's on, he's on brand.
- 52:51He, I, I think the trend of fashion is so interesting.
- 52:55I mean, everybody used to wear suits all the time.
- 52:58I mean, you go back and look at old clips, videos from like
- 53:01pictures from the 20s or 30s. Men wore suits like every day
- 53:04just out to go to the grocery store.
- 53:06Now we wear athleisure. You know, we nobody dresses up
- 53:10for anything. And I don't sit around me.
- 53:12Oh my God, where is your suit to go to the store?
- 53:16I look, I would it be weird if Obama was up there and like a
- 53:19wife beater and and a pair of of shorts?
- 53:23OK, yeah, maybe that would be weird.
- 53:25But would I be outraged by it? I'm just talking about me
- 53:27personally. Would I care?
- 53:29No. Do I lose any sleep or muster up
- 53:31any outrage that Federman had the audacity to wear shorts to
- 53:37to the inauguration? No, I just, I just can't.
- 53:40Or that women dress more provocatively than than some.
- 53:44You know, I thought we were past that.
- 53:46I guess not more provocatively than some people would like to
- 53:49certain events. How about people just wear what
- 53:52they want to wear and if you don't like it, don't say
- 53:56anything. Or if you do say something,
- 53:58fine, but just don't get super outraged about it 'cause there
- 54:01are other more important things going on in America than what
- 54:04people decide to wear to certain events.
- 54:07All right, let's let's end on this.
- 54:09It's a topic and I'm looking at it right now and it's my
- 54:13Christmas tree. My Christmas tree is still up.
- 54:16And this became a little bit of a battle with my wife.
- 54:19I love Christmas, I love the decorations.
- 54:22So what we had going was we took down, I took down basically all
- 54:26the decorations in the house except for the Christmas tree.
- 54:30And I was thinking, look, my daughter's birthday is January
- 54:3319th, right? And then Ohio State has this
- 54:37playoff run and I kind of like watching the games with a we
- 54:41have a fireplace over here. I kind of like the ambience of
- 54:44the fireplace and the Christmas tree.
- 54:46So I tried to sell this to my wife and I said, what if we did
- 54:48this? I said, what if after Christmas
- 54:51we take down the Christmas decorations from the tree and we
- 54:55make it a Janie Mae's birthday tree, right?
- 54:59Like cuz her birthday is January 19th.
- 55:00We keep it up to three weeks later, but we make it a birthday
- 55:03tree. And she was not about that
- 55:05whatsoever. She didn't like that idea.
- 55:06I thought it was a creative idea.
- 55:08So but you you is the tree still up?
- 55:11So just yesterday she started taking the decorations down.
- 55:15I basically just have to take the tree out of the stand and
- 55:17throw it out. Our, our, our, our leaf waste
- 55:21comes on Fridays, so today's Wednesday so I'll take it out by
- 55:24Friday. But the the tree is still up,
- 55:26but all the decorations are off it and it's ready to be taken
- 55:29out of the house. Yeah, I one year I had No, I we
- 55:33have always had artificial trees.
- 55:34So it's different if it's alive versus artificial.
- 55:37But we kept ours up just because we were busy and didn't care
- 55:39until like I would say, I want to say it was almost March, 1
- 55:42year and every night I would still turn it on every night, I,
- 55:46every single night I would still turn it on 'cause I just like
- 55:49the way it looked and I don't now there is something to be
- 55:53said about only bringing it out for that, that time of year,
- 55:56making it kind of a special occasion.
- 55:58But on the other hand, there's just something cool about having
- 56:01the lights of the Christmas tree.
- 56:03Yes. And look, if you have to go
- 56:05through the process of every year bringing it out, getting
- 56:11all the ornaments out, you meant maybe you have some tinsel,
- 56:14maybe you have a little set up underneath, maybe you just let
- 56:18it ride all year. I mean, would that be the worst
- 56:21thing in the world if you just let the tree up all year through
- 56:24to save yourself the hassle of digging it out after
- 56:28Thanksgiving? I've never tried it but I don't
- 56:31know is it crazy? The lights do look cool, by the
- 56:34way, and that that same thing at night, especially when you walk
- 56:37through your house and and it's dark and you see the lights.
- 56:39It looks cool. By the way, in Saint Louis.
- 56:41I have John Rybol here, See he's bringing up the Ryan Day thing.
- 56:44No, Ryan Day should not be fired.
- 56:46They're on you for Ryan. Day.
- 56:48Did I ever say that? No.
- 56:50You probably saw this in Saint Louis.
- 56:52There are people that they do their Christmas lights outside
- 56:55their house, but then they either leave them up or they
- 56:58turn them into Mardi Gras lights.
- 57:01And so they're purple. They're whatever the Mardi Gras
- 57:04colors. Is it purple and green and
- 57:05yellow, whatever it is, right? So like you'll see that you'll
- 57:08drive through Saint Louis. I just did this the other day.
- 57:11I was surprised at how many lights I saw, but it's Mardi
- 57:13Gras lights and I guess when's Mardi Gras?
- 57:15Another month or so, so they're going to be up for a while.
- 57:18Yeah, my son, he loves he's he has autism.
- 57:21He watches his little tablet. He loves Christmas music.
- 57:23So he will listen to Christmas music all year round.
- 57:27Little Jingle Bells in like May or June, you know, just keep the
- 57:30Christmas, everybody loves the Christmas time, right?
- 57:32Everyone feel is feeling good, is happy.
- 57:34So keeping it going all year round.
- 57:37That's what I'm saying. Extend it as long as possible.
- 57:41Have that tree up for a good solid two months.
- 57:43Put it up. I'm cool with putting up the
- 57:45decorations the day after actually Halloween.
- 57:48I think it's cool to have seriously.
- 57:51Well, the Christmas, the Christmas mood, Even though it's
- 57:54Thanksgiving, I think you should have your decorations up for as
- 57:57long as possible because it it puts people in a good mood.
- 57:59Yeah, no, I agree. I used to not like it early and
- 58:03I do think there has been a lot of Christmas creep.
- 58:06But at a certain point, you know, the weather gets a little
- 58:10colder. As long as it's not overboard,
- 58:12as long as you're not blasting Christmas music everywhere that,
- 58:16that early in the year. That's a little bit weird.
- 58:18But I do like the idea of extending the happiness.
- 58:22I think you're on to something here, Charlie, who put you, you
- 58:25know what? Tell your wife that you're the
- 58:27man of the house and you want that tree up and it's going to
