- 0:00Welcome to the BBQ Therapy minicast, quick hits, Real Talk
- 0:03and all things BBQ. Whether you're just starting out
- 0:06or been on the pits for years, there's something for you.
- 0:10Lock in and let's get better. The pit builds the person.
- 0:13You ever notice BBQ doesn't just cook meat.
- 0:16It cooks patient. It cooks ego, it cooks
- 0:20insecurity, it cooks pride. And sometimes it cooks you.
- 0:25We spent all this time talking about brisket, ribs, chicken
- 0:28injections, rub ratios, smoke rings, but nobody talks about
- 0:33what the pit is building in you today.
- 0:35We're not talking recipes today, we're talking about the fire is
- 0:40we're talking about what the fire is shaping inside the pit
- 0:43master. Hello everyone.
- 0:44My name is Tavis brain of BBQ therapy podcast.
- 0:47And you're locked into another episode where BBQ is more than
- 0:51food. It's therapy.
- 0:53And today's episode is personal. No guests, no stats, no
- 0:56rankings. It's just real talk about what
- 0:59this craft does to us mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
- 1:04Because if you're around the pit long enough, you know it changes
- 1:07you. Let's get into it.
- 1:09I remember the first time I thought I had it figured out.
- 1:12You know that moment. You've watched YouTube videos,
- 1:15you read the forums, you followed the big names on
- 1:18Instagram. You got the rub layer perfect.
- 1:21You're spritzing like a pro. And then the brisket come off
- 1:25dry, flat, overcooked in one spot, tighten another, and
- 1:29suddenly all that confidence evaporates.
- 1:33BBQ will humble you faster than almost anything I've ever done,
- 1:37and that's the first lesson the pit teaches.
- 1:39You're not in control. You can manage fire, you can
- 1:43monitor the temperature, and you can adjust airflow, which cannot
- 1:48force results. And that's uncomfortable because
- 1:52most of us are used to controlling outcomes.
- 1:54Work harder, get better results, push more, produce more.
- 1:59But BBQ doesn't respond to force, it responds to patients.
- 2:03You can't rush a brisket through the stall, can't bully ribs into
- 2:07tenderness. You can't demand smoke to
- 2:09behave. The pit forces you to slow down.
- 2:13And slowing down is hard for us, especially now we live in a fast
- 2:17world. Fast food, fast content, fast
- 2:21opinions. But the pit says sit down, watch
- 2:25and wait. And if you don't, it'll expose
- 2:28you. That first bag cook isn't just
- 2:31about meat, it's about ego. Let's talk about ego.
- 2:35Competition BBQ will test you, social media will inflate it,
- 2:39and one bag cook will destroy it.
- 2:42There's something dangerous about getting praise too early.
- 2:46You post that rack of ribs, perfect glaze, clean bite mark.
- 2:50People will comment fire emojis telling you you're killing it
- 2:54and suddenly you're cooking for validation, not growth.
- 2:59And here's the question I had to ask myself.
- 3:02Would I still cook if no one sees it?
- 3:04If there were no likes, no trophies, no followers, no
- 3:09repost? Will I still wake up early in
- 3:12the morning? Would I still trim that brisket
- 3:15meticulously? Would I still sit by the fire
- 3:18alone? That's when you find out who you
- 3:21really are in this craft, because BBQ will reveal your
- 3:24motivation. Are you chasing status or
- 3:27Mastery? There's a difference.
- 3:30Status wants applause, Mastery wants discipline.
- 3:34And the pit doesn't care about your followers.
- 3:36It doesn't care how many comps you enter.
- 3:39It doesn't care about what brand sent you rub.
- 3:42It cares about temperature, time, attention, and
- 3:46consistency. I've seen cooks with all types
- 3:49of hype in the world crumble under real fire management.
- 3:53Now. I've seen quiet pit masters, no
- 3:55flash, no ego, absolutely dominate because they respect
- 3:59the craft. The pit expose arrogance, but it
- 4:02rewards humility. And that's not just BBQ, that's
- 4:06life. Let's talk about the therapy of
- 4:08fire. Let's talk about something
- 4:10deeper. Why does tending to fire feel
- 4:13calming? Why does trimming meat and
- 4:15silence feel meditative? Why does the smell of post oak
- 4:19in the morning hit something in your chest?
- 4:22There's something ancient about it.
- 4:25You're working with elements, fire, air time meet.
- 4:30No screens, no noise. Just you in the process.
- 4:34And when you're sitting there late at night during the cook,
- 4:37watching the smoke roll clean and thin, it does something to
- 4:40your nervous system. It slows you down.
- 4:43It forces presence. You can't scroll and manage fire
- 4:48well. You can't rush and cook clean.
- 4:51You can't multitask your way to a championship tenderness.
- 4:55You have to be there. And in a world where most of us
- 4:58are overstimulated, overworked, and overwhelmed, that stillness
- 5:02is rare. BBQ becomes therapy because it
- 5:05demands attention, and attention heals.
- 5:09Some of the most honest conversations I've had have
- 5:12happened around the smoker. Not at a conference table, not
- 5:16on Zoom, but leaning against a trailer at a comp, or sitting in
- 5:20a folding chair late at night, or standing around burnt ends
- 5:24with friends. The pit creates space, and space
- 5:28creates truth, and that's powerful.
- 5:31Now let me challenge you. Are you cooking with intention
- 5:35or are you guessing? Are you studying temperature
- 5:39swings or are you just winging it?
- 5:42Are you learning the why behind the wrap or are you copying what
- 5:45you saw online? Because here's the truth.
- 5:49If you respect the craft, it will respect you back.
- 5:53But if you cut corners, if you rush, if you chase trends, the
- 5:58pit will expose it. There's a standard in BBQ.
- 6:02The old school pitmasters understood it.
- 6:04Consistency over height, process over praise, fire management
- 6:09over fancy glaze. And if you want longevity in
- 6:13this craft and not just moments, you got to raise your standard,
- 6:18not for judges, not for social media, for yourself.
- 6:22Because every time you light that fire, you're practicing
- 6:25discipline, you're practicing patience, you're practicing
- 6:29emotional regulation, you're practicing resilience that's
- 6:34bigger than brisk. So I'll leave you with this.
- 6:38What is the pit building in you right now?
- 6:41Is it exposing the impatience? Is it teaching humility?
- 6:45Is it demanding more focus? Is it forcing you to slow down?
- 6:49Because the fire doesn't lie, it reveals.
- 6:52And if you're willing to listen, it will teach you.
- 6:56BBQ doesn't just build flavor, it builds people.
- 7:00It builds patience. It builds resilience.
- 7:03It builds character. And that's why it isn't just
- 7:06cooking. This is therapy.
- 7:09And if this episode hits you, share with somebody who
- 7:12understands what it means to sit by the fire.
