- 1:24Speaker 8: I'm Phillip.
- 1:48Speaker 9: And we're coming to you live via digital recording from
- 1:50Speaker 9: the Oddity Studios on a lovely, like, ridiculously lovely day. So,
- 1:55Speaker 9: of course, I had to drag you guys inside so
- 1:57Speaker 9: that you don't get to have fun in it. So,
- 2:00Speaker 9: you're welcome. So, I thought, once again, we're gathered together.
- 2:06Speaker 9: It's been a few weeks.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Dearly beloved.
- 2:09Speaker 9: Dearly beloved.
- 2:12Speaker 10: Let's start some.
- 2:12Speaker 3: I don't know what happened.
- 2:14Speaker 9: I'm sorry. This is not... brought to you by m
- 2:19Speaker 9: & ms but if they'd like to kick in money
- 2:20Speaker 9: feel free but yes we're all together so i thought
- 2:25Speaker 9: let's discuss some things we've seen lately uh i just
- 2:30Speaker 9: watched the um i wanted to see it since i
- 2:34Speaker 9: saw the trailer like last year i know because we
- 2:37Speaker 9: talked about it on the episode at the time and
- 2:39Speaker 9: i was just like all right this actually legitimately looks
- 2:42Speaker 9: good uh bad times at el royale oh I wanted
- 2:47Speaker 9: to see that one. Yeah, has anybody seen it?
- 2:50Speaker 3: I came very close to seeing it.
- 2:53Speaker 9: It is as good as I expected and actually kind
- 2:56Speaker 9: of a little more impressive. Just once I got into it,
- 3:01Speaker 9: the more and more you kind of look at everything
- 3:03Speaker 9: else going on, it's kind of amazing how much effort
- 3:08Speaker 9: they put into this. And then I started thinking because
- 3:13Speaker 9: I watched the little behind the scenes and it's like
- 3:15Speaker 9: bringing up Drew Goddard. And I'm like, why do I,
- 3:17Speaker 9: I know, like, I really know that name. I was like,
- 3:20Speaker 9: isn't he like Buffy related? So if you go back
- 3:22Speaker 9: far enough, he was writing for Buffy. Then the reason
- 3:26Speaker 9: I was like, oh, no wonder I know him. He's
- 3:27Speaker 9: the creator of the Daredevil series. So like, obviously he
- 3:31Speaker 9: knows kind of what he's doing as far as like
- 3:33Speaker 9: these stories. But yeah, it's sort of film noir in
- 3:41Speaker 9: the best possible way. Like it's a neo-noir kind of thing,
- 3:44Speaker 9: but it's also the If there's a gimmick, like, but
- 3:48Speaker 9: I mean gimmick even within the story, like it's meant
- 3:50Speaker 9: to be a gimmick. The El Royale is a hotel
- 3:53Speaker 9: and it is literally on, and I mean that by
- 3:56Speaker 9: dividing line running through, it is a hotel on the
- 3:59Speaker 9: border of Nevada and California. And the line runs through
- 4:03Speaker 9: the middle of the lobby. And there's so much so
- 4:05Speaker 9: that like you can drink in one state, but you
- 4:08Speaker 9: can't like over here. You can gamble in this state,
- 4:11Speaker 9: but you can't over here. So like you can wander
- 4:13Speaker 9: back and forth within the lobby and partake in all this.
- 4:16Speaker 9: except like a year or two before they lost their
- 4:20Speaker 9: gambling license. So now we're on like the down and
- 4:23Speaker 9: out years of the El Royale. So the whole thing
- 4:26Speaker 9: kind of centers around this and almost never leaves this hotel.
- 4:29Speaker 9: And it's pretty amazing. And again, in the trailer, you're
- 4:34Speaker 9: looking at Chris Hemsworth and you're like, damn, he's studly.
- 4:38Speaker 9: And then like you realize like within the context of
- 4:41Speaker 9: the movie, no, there's a reason he's that damn charismatic. Like, yup.
- 4:47Speaker 9: And my initial issue was, as I previously stated, problems
- 4:53Speaker 9: with Dakota Johnson. Dakota, there we go. We never fully
- 4:59Speaker 9: discussed after I saw the Suspiria thing, but to me
- 5:02Speaker 9: she was the problem in Suspiria. And she doesn't have
- 5:07Speaker 9: enough to do in this to really become an issue.
- 5:09Speaker 9: I mean, all she's asked to do is be kind
- 5:12Speaker 9: of pissy and annoyed at everyone and rude, and she
- 5:15Speaker 9: does all those pretty well. So again, she, sometimes you
- 5:18Speaker 9: can cast within what a person does.
- 5:20Speaker 11: Okay.
- 5:20Speaker 9: And it doesn't hurt the overall project, but everybody else
- 5:23Speaker 9: is like amazing.
- 5:24Speaker 11: It's yeah.
- 5:26Speaker 9: It's surprisingly well put together. The time that they put
- 5:30Speaker 9: into just like color coordinating, like each side of the
- 5:33Speaker 9: hotel has its own color theme. And like, even within
- 5:37Speaker 9: the plot, they have like reasons why, like we don't
- 5:40Speaker 9: use this color or this is like the, like everybody's
- 5:42Speaker 9: costume sort of fits into it. Like, They spent so
- 5:45Speaker 9: much time on the backstory. That's why I was kind
- 5:47Speaker 9: of like, this Drew Goddard guy, I know I know
- 5:50Speaker 9: him for a reason. And yeah, he put a ridiculous
- 5:52Speaker 9: amount of time into it. So it's got, yeah, it's
- 5:56Speaker 9: got a great soundtrack. Like everything about it is kind
- 5:59Speaker 9: of worth watching. So I was impressed with it.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Didn't he do Cabin in the Woods too?
- 6:05Speaker 9: Yeah, that was the other, I went back. That was
- 6:07Speaker 9: the only other like feature thing that he'd done, which
- 6:10Speaker 9: I always kind of threw it out that half of
- 6:12Speaker 9: that was sort of, I don't know. I wondered how
- 6:16Speaker 9: much was him directing versus... Because that's Joss too, wasn't it?
- 6:21Speaker 9: So I kind of wondered if that was kind of
- 6:24Speaker 9: co-done by Joss, especially since he hadn't done a feature before,
- 6:28Speaker 9: how much Joss sort of came in and helped run everything.
- 6:31Speaker 9: But I felt more problems with that. I haven't revisited it,
- 6:36Speaker 9: so I kind of need to go back and re-watch
- 6:38Speaker 9: Cabin in the Woods.
- 6:39Speaker 3: It takes a while to ramp up for me.
- 6:42Speaker 9: And it feels like it's not... trying that hard in
- 6:45Speaker 9: the beginning like it's it's obviously making fun of those
- 6:48Speaker 9: kind of horror movies but it didn't seem like it
- 6:51Speaker 9: was doing it in a super clever way right it
- 6:53Speaker 9: just seemed like it was very blatantly making fun of
- 6:56Speaker 9: dumb horror movies i'm like yeah but again i think
- 6:59Speaker 9: i had set my heights a little higher because i
- 7:01Speaker 9: knew joss was involved so i was like i expect
- 7:04Speaker 9: him to you know write really impressive stuff and this
- 7:07Speaker 9: just seems like again if i didn't know any of
- 7:10Speaker 9: the people involved i might be like that's fine it's
- 7:12Speaker 9: pretty cool As a concept. And by the end, it is.
- 7:15Speaker 9: It's an amazing concept. But, yeah, that first half just
- 7:18Speaker 9: seemed clunky at the time. But, again, I'll revisit. But, yeah,
- 7:24Speaker 9: El Royale is pretty badass.
- 7:29Speaker 10: I kind of got... What was that movie that came
- 7:32Speaker 10: out with, like, John Cusack and, like, all those people
- 7:35Speaker 10: at the motel?
- 7:36Speaker 3: It really, like.
- 7:37Speaker 9: I was kind of thinking that.
- 7:39Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Um.
- 7:41Speaker 9: What was that?
- 7:41Speaker 10: Like when I saw the trailer for El Royale, I
- 7:43Speaker 10: was like, okay, this is clearly going to have some
- 7:45Speaker 10: like insane twist or something to it.
- 7:48Speaker 3: I feel like.
- 7:49Speaker 13: The room 413 or whatever.
- 7:52Speaker 9: No but he also is in that I was getting
- 7:53Speaker 9: those vibes too.
- 7:54Speaker 10: Yeah he was in that too yeah John Cusack he
- 7:57Speaker 10: likes hanging out in motels he's.
- 7:59Speaker 9: Like look I'll show up but you gotta get me
- 8:01Speaker 9: a hotel room I'll be mostly in a hotel can
- 8:04Speaker 9: you just write the movie in a.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Hotel yeah once I check in I am not.
- 8:07Speaker 9: Leaving I'm not leaving I'll be lucky to not show
- 8:10Speaker 9: up in PJ's because I am settling into this hotel
- 8:15Speaker 9: trying to figure out what that.
- 8:16Speaker 13: One was and you know I feel like John Cusack
- 8:18Speaker 13: earned that right Yeah, at this point.
- 8:20Speaker 3: He's entertained us all enough.
- 8:22Speaker 9: He's logged in a lot of movies, so I'll give
- 8:24Speaker 9: him that.
- 8:26Speaker 3: I can't remember who else was in it. I just
- 8:28Speaker 3: know Ray Liotta.
- 8:30Speaker 9: Identity? Yes. I remember, again, I remember watching the trailer
- 8:36Speaker 9: for that one thinking it looked like a really cool concept,
- 8:40Speaker 9: and the execution is kind of a letdown. Again, because
- 8:45Speaker 9: it was right at that era of twist, and it
- 8:48Speaker 9: needed to... according to them, needed a twist to make
- 8:51Speaker 9: it work. Whereas, again, the first half is set up
- 8:54Speaker 9: kind of smart and could have just been about that,
- 8:58Speaker 9: and instead they had to work in a weird twist element. So, yeah,
- 9:01Speaker 9: Amanda Peete, John Hawks, I think I forgot he.
- 9:04Speaker 11: Was in it.
- 9:05Speaker 9: Clea Duvall, all right. Jake Busey, hey, this is... Rebecca DeMornay,
- 9:11Speaker 9: this is, yeah, we got all kinds of people.
- 9:13Speaker 13: It does have everybody.
- 9:14Speaker 9: It does, yeah. So... If they delivered on all of
- 9:18Speaker 9: that promise, you'd have El Royale. El Royale is worth watching.
- 9:22Speaker 9: I was very pleased. I'm glad to hear.
- 9:26Speaker 3: It looked good, but I was like, oh.
- 9:28Speaker 9: Again, visually. Cinematography. They spent so much time on the
- 9:32Speaker 9: visuals making everything look perfect. It's pretty impressive.
- 9:36Speaker 12: Am I next? netflix has some good horror movies they
- 9:40Speaker 12: also have some bad.
- 9:41Speaker 9: Ones we're just adding to our horror club list yeah
- 9:47Speaker 9: this is usually where the suggestions have come so far
- 9:50Speaker 9: as you're just like but i saw this it's on
- 9:51Speaker 9: netflix let's watch it and i'm like okay.
- 9:54Speaker 12: Calm down so i watched Green Room on Netflix.
- 9:59Speaker 3: That's a great movie.
- 10:00Speaker 12: It was awesome.
- 10:01Speaker 3: I have been wanting to see that.
- 10:03Speaker 9: I love it. I think you more than anyone I
- 10:05Speaker 9: know would appreciate this because you know the premise.
- 10:08Speaker 13: Right. What I've been told about it, it's like that
- 10:10Speaker 13: is right up my alley.
- 10:11Speaker 3: It is, yeah.
- 10:12Speaker 9: I mean, anybody that's been in a band and played
- 10:15Speaker 9: crap shows, this is– You show up and you have
- 10:19Speaker 9: no idea where you're going or what kind of place
- 10:21Speaker 9: it's going to be or what the crowd's going to
- 10:23Speaker 9: be like and how many times has that happened? So
- 10:25Speaker 9: that's every show.
- 10:27Speaker 3: You're ever at.
- 10:27Speaker 9: Yeah. So, yeah, this is exactly, yeah, it's that gone
- 10:33Speaker 9: the most wrong a thing can go.
- 10:35Speaker 12: But it's like really fun.
- 10:36Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 10:37Speaker 12: I mean, despite being like super violent.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Because somebody told me about it and I was like,
- 10:41Speaker 3: that just sounds like a nightmare.
- 10:42Speaker 9: And they're like, well, yeah, it is a nightmare.
- 10:44Speaker 3: It is, honestly. But an awesome nightmare.
- 10:46Speaker 12: Yeah, like it's great. It has like really funny moments
- 10:48Speaker 12: in it.
- 10:49Speaker 9: Yeah, surprisingly.
- 10:50Speaker 12: All the cast is amazing. Patrick Stewart is the owner
- 10:53Speaker 12: of a neo-Nazi club.
- 10:54Speaker 9: I feel like eventually we'll all come to terms with
- 10:57Speaker 9: like just how epically amazing. Like I think we just
- 10:59Speaker 9: wrote on like, you know, Star Trek, whatever. And then like, yeah, yeah,
- 11:03Speaker 9: he's Professor X. But I'm like- The other stuff he does. Like,
- 11:06Speaker 9: he is so good all around. I mean, not that
- 11:09Speaker 9: he hasn't been around Excalibur. I mean, he's been doing
- 11:12Speaker 9: this forever. But, like, yeah, he is just so amazing. Like,
- 11:17Speaker 9: to watch him do this kind of performance is like....
- 11:22Speaker 13: Man, I love Patrick Stewart.
- 11:23Speaker 9: Oh, yeah.
- 11:25Speaker 12: And I love that he didn't even, like, change his
- 11:27Speaker 12: voice at all. Like, you'd think if you're playing this, like,
- 11:30Speaker 12: neo-Nazi club owner in, like, rural Oregon that you might...
- 11:35Speaker 12: Not have the Patrick Stewart voice, but he's just, just
- 11:38Speaker 12: Patrick Stewart.
- 11:39Speaker 9: That's what I said, though. I'm like, well, but nobody,
- 11:41Speaker 9: you never know what a neo-Nazi is going to look
- 11:43Speaker 9: like now. So, like, the other yokel Americans didn't change their,
- 11:48Speaker 9: that seems fitting, but I'm like, you kind of don't know.
- 11:52Speaker 9: The world we live in, you don't know who these
- 11:54Speaker 9: people are that you're around all day long. So, I
- 11:57Speaker 9: kind of like that it's just like, you never know
- 11:59Speaker 9: who falls in this category. And who's going to be
- 12:02Speaker 9: your worst nightmare. Yeah.
- 12:05Speaker 12: It was so fun though and the special effects are
- 12:09Speaker 12: like it's.
- 12:10Speaker 9: Bad horribly awesome some really bad.
- 12:14Speaker 12: Stuff happens but yeah it just feels kind of like
- 12:17Speaker 12: a crazy fever dream punk rock like That movie.
- 12:23Speaker 10: I thought, was just terrifying. Like, I think it was
- 12:25Speaker 10: scarier than any movie I've seen in, like, the last
- 12:27Speaker 10: 10 years. Just seeing that in the theater, like, I
- 12:30Speaker 10: guess you could.
- 12:31Speaker 3: It's technically sort of a horror premise, but it's also.
- 12:35Speaker 10: It's just realistic enough to be.
- 12:37Speaker 9: It's real world, I think, is why it's so horrifying.
- 12:39Speaker 9: Because all of this, like, it doesn't get supernatural. Like,
- 12:42Speaker 9: all of these things could really be happening to someone
- 12:45Speaker 9: right now. Maybe you. Depending on where you end up, so... Yeah,
- 12:49Speaker 9: I think it's the reality of it that makes it
- 12:52Speaker 9: so horrifying. And I really like Imogene Poots. Some of
- 12:56Speaker 9: it's just because I like saying Imogene Poots.
- 12:58Speaker 13: How can you not?
- 13:00Speaker 9: I don't think I... It was halfway in before I'm like,
- 13:03Speaker 9: oh wait, she's so drastically different looking. Yep, Imogene Poots.
- 13:08Speaker 12: So grungy.
- 13:10Speaker 9: I can't watch anything while we're on that universe kick,
- 13:14Speaker 9: but anything with Anton Yelchin... It's just depressing, really. Like,
- 13:20Speaker 9: he's so talented, you know? It's like we all got
- 13:24Speaker 9: robbed on that one. Like, stupid car manufacturers.
- 13:28Speaker 12: Poor guy.
- 13:29Speaker 9: But yeah, I mean, he had like 12 things that
- 13:31Speaker 9: he'd already finished that kept coming out after he died.
- 13:33Speaker 9: And like each one, you're just like, damn, he's good
- 13:36Speaker 9: in this too. Like, I mean, I guess it was
- 13:39Speaker 9: good that we got all those extra things after he
- 13:41Speaker 9: was already gone. But yeah, it just kind of hammers
- 13:44Speaker 9: it home that like, man, how talented... He was, and
- 13:48Speaker 9: what we could have had had he lived to be
- 13:50Speaker 9: an old man, like.
- 13:53Speaker 5: Yep.
- 13:54Speaker 12: R.I.P.
- 13:55Speaker 9: He's more than just a weird Russian guy flying in
- 13:59Speaker 9: a spaceship. It's like we were in that universe, though.
- 14:04Speaker 9: That's still a pretty good thing to be, though. Yeah,
- 14:07Speaker 9: but he's barely in those. It's funny, that's still the
- 14:11Speaker 9: thing he's known most for, but I don't know. I mean,
- 14:16Speaker 9: that last one... He really is barely in. They had
- 14:19Speaker 9: to be like tribute to him at the end of
- 14:21Speaker 9: the credits, but I'm like, he's got like 10 minutes
- 14:23Speaker 9: accumulative in the whole movie. Like he's just so not
- 14:27Speaker 9: one of the leads in that series. So it's funny
- 14:29Speaker 9: that he got as big as he did for being
- 14:31Speaker 9: in that, I guess just because it's so high profile,
- 14:34Speaker 9: but still. Yeah, that's, he's got so much more to
- 14:38Speaker 9: offer than what he gets to do when he says Wessels.
- 14:42Speaker 9: It's adorable. Don't get me wrong.
- 14:46Speaker 10: Uh, yeah, I saw a great, uh, French horror film
- 14:53Speaker 10: called revenge. Um, uh, yeah, very, very basic title, but.
- 15:01Speaker 3: I, it's honestly, I thought it was brilliant.
- 15:04Speaker 10: It's the subject matter is, uh, is definitely based on
- 15:10Speaker 10: kind of the, I spit on your grave, like female
- 15:12Speaker 10: revenge tradition, which kind of like, you're like, uh, you know,
- 15:15Speaker 10: this is going to be heavy, but it's so well, uh,
- 15:20Speaker 10: handled and it kind of just, I don't know. It,
- 15:24Speaker 10: it inverses a lot of like the.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Is that inverse?
- 15:28Speaker 9: Inverse.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Perverts.
- 15:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Yeah, sure.
- 15:32Speaker 10: Um, But in an awesome way, it just kind of
- 15:36Speaker 10: like changes the whole mold for that kind of genre.
- 15:41Speaker 10: And like, I just can't, it's basically, it feels like
- 15:48Speaker 10: there's no going back as far as like, if this
- 15:50Speaker 10: is going to keep being like this, like really like
- 15:53Speaker 10: intense conversation. kind of horror movie like it's gonna be
- 15:57Speaker 10: like based on this movie from now on is this like.
- 16:00Speaker 9: A recently made movie.
- 16:02Speaker 10: Yeah it technically it came out in france in 2017
- 16:05Speaker 10: but it came out here and kind.
- 16:07Speaker 9: Of like still pretty quick for boring usually yeah and
- 16:10Speaker 9: we're usually a couple years behind and a lot.
- 16:12Speaker 10: Of people and i didn't know about until recently either
- 16:14Speaker 10: but it got a small release and you can like
- 16:18Speaker 10: uh watch it on things like on voodoo and stuff
- 16:21Speaker 10: like that running on on streaming but it Honestly, I
- 16:25Speaker 10: would maybe put in my top five best movies of
- 16:28Speaker 10: last year. It's just so well made. The director, it's
- 16:32Speaker 10: her first movie, and it's just one of those movies
- 16:34Speaker 10: that feels like she's made a million movies before. It's
- 16:38Speaker 10: just so well handled, and it's funny. It has a
- 16:43Speaker 10: lot of visual.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Humor, and.
- 16:48Speaker 10: There's a lot of subtext going on, a lot of
- 16:52Speaker 10: academic kind of... picking apart of like old horror tropes
- 16:57Speaker 10: and stuff like that. And it's just, it's awesome.
- 17:00Speaker 3: It was so good.
- 17:02Speaker 9: Anybody that is recognizable on this side of the ocean?
- 17:06Speaker 10: Well, it's French. I didn't recognize anyone. Everyone in it,
- 17:09Speaker 10: most of the people are in it. It's like a
- 17:11Speaker 10: small cast of like six people total. And most of
- 17:15Speaker 10: them are French. The main girl I thought was American
- 17:19Speaker 10: because she... speaks English in it with an American accent,
- 17:22Speaker 10: but apparently, like, looking at the cast, she's an Italian model.
- 17:27Speaker 10: I guess who can speak English very, very well.
- 17:29Speaker 11: Interesting.
- 17:29Speaker 10: Maybe grew up in the States or something, but half
- 17:32Speaker 10: the movie's in French and half of it's in English. And, yeah,
- 17:36Speaker 10: so it's like if you don't like subtitles, it's pretty,
- 17:39Speaker 10: you know. Damn it.
- 17:41Speaker 3: No, it's pretty accessible.
- 17:42Speaker 10: Yeah, it's not all, you know, in French, but it's, yeah,
- 17:46Speaker 10: it's pretty incredible.
- 17:47Speaker 9: Nice.
- 17:49Speaker 10: Some of the most gnarly, bloodiest, like, movie deaths I've
- 17:54Speaker 10: seen in a while, and I know this is, like,
- 17:57Speaker 10: kind of, like, a weird, like, sentiment, but, like, I
- 18:00Speaker 10: always love, like, in horror movies, like, scenes that I
- 18:03Speaker 10: just think are awesome are when, like, the main person
- 18:05Speaker 10: has to, like, heal themselves, and they're like, like hurting
- 18:08Speaker 10: themselves really badly as they're healing themselves i think i'm.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Gonna dig this yeah like that shit that shit.
- 18:14Speaker 10: Never gets old for me i'm like oh my god
- 18:15Speaker 10: like but it doesn't the same time it doesn't feel
- 18:17Speaker 10: like exploitive because it's like they're they're healing themselves like
- 18:20Speaker 10: they're getting better.
- 18:21Speaker 9: Rambo's got to stitch up his injury yeah yeah and it's.
- 18:24Speaker 10: Just you're like you're like you know rooting for them
- 18:26Speaker 10: um but this i feel like has the best like
- 18:29Speaker 10: painful like uh uh.
- 18:34Speaker 3: I guess like.
- 18:35Speaker 10: Self-surgical, I don't want to get too into it, scene
- 18:39Speaker 10: that I've.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Seen in any movie.
- 18:42Speaker 10: But it's like, again, like it weirdly does, it's very
- 18:45Speaker 10: violent and like makes you cringe, but it's like done
- 18:48Speaker 10: in like a funny, kind of like a fun way,
- 18:51Speaker 10: which again, like giving the subject material, it's like, what?
- 18:54Speaker 3: How is it fun?
- 18:55Speaker 10: But it's just, it was just so well like executed.
- 18:59Speaker 9: Guys, I've decided to take my appendix out. Don't bother
- 19:01Speaker 9: stopping the party. Just continue on.
- 19:04Speaker 3: I'll be over here.
- 19:05Speaker 10: Not to be too vague, but just to give a taste,
- 19:07Speaker 10: there is a scene where the main character is in
- 19:10Speaker 10: a cave and she's by this campfire and she has
- 19:15Speaker 10: an open wound on her torso. She's bleeding out and
- 19:20Speaker 10: she has to basically cauterize herself with a rolled out
- 19:26Speaker 10: beer can that she flattens and holds over the fire.
- 19:29Speaker 3: And, okay, so here's why the movie's awesome.
- 19:32Speaker 10: Like, she cauterizes herself and, like, passes out and wakes
- 19:36Speaker 10: up the next morning. And, like, because the beer can
- 19:38Speaker 10: has this, like, eagle, like, emblem on it of this, like,
- 19:40Speaker 10: badass eagle, she now has this, eagle branded.
- 19:44Speaker 3: Tattoo where her wound was.
- 19:46Speaker 10: She gets up and goes on her way to seek revenge.
- 19:51Speaker 9: We're all going to start getting those.
- 19:54Speaker 3: It's such a great moment.
- 19:55Speaker 13: That alone makes me want to watch it.
- 19:57Speaker 3: That is so good.
- 20:02Speaker 13: I got to see last week on the big screen
- 20:05Speaker 13: for the first time in my life, Labyrinth. Which was
- 20:09Speaker 13: quite awesome. Hadn't seen that movie in probably 10 or
- 20:13Speaker 13: 15 years, and it was so much.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Better than I remember it being.
- 20:19Speaker 13: My one complaint, and it wasn't with the movie itself,
- 20:22Speaker 13: it was the fact that people... would not stop cheering
- 20:25Speaker 13: every time David Bowie walked on the screen.
- 20:27Speaker 9: I mean, I understand, but we are still trying to
- 20:30Speaker 9: watch a movie again.
- 20:31Speaker 13: Well, yeah, the first time, you know, the audience exploded,
- 20:34Speaker 13: and I was like, okay, and.
- 20:35Speaker 3: I clapped along.
- 20:36Speaker 10: It's David Bowie.
- 20:36Speaker 11: It makes sense.
- 20:37Speaker 13: But then it got to be the point where, like,
- 20:41Speaker 13: he'd be in a scene with, like, say, Jennifer Connelly,
- 20:44Speaker 13: and the camera would cut back and forth between one
- 20:46Speaker 13: or the other of them. He'd go off screen, silence.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Camera'd cut back to him.
- 20:52Speaker 13: Cheers and applause.
- 20:54Speaker 3: And it's like, I can't hear what he's saying.
- 20:57Speaker 9: They're trying to have a conversation. Calm down.
- 21:01Speaker 13: Well, the other complaint was as soon as the movie
- 21:04Speaker 13: was over, before the credits start rolling, my wife leans
- 21:07Speaker 13: over to me and goes, I forgot how bad the
- 21:09Speaker 13: acting was in this movie.
- 21:11Speaker 9: So you're not with her anymore.
- 21:12Speaker 13: I immediately filed for divorce.
- 21:14Speaker 9: It's a given.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Well, she.
- 21:17Speaker 3: She kept saying, well, I love the movie. I love
- 21:18Speaker 3: the movie.
- 21:19Speaker 13: I just hate the leads in this.
- 21:20Speaker 3: And I'm like, how could you?
- 21:22Speaker 9: People love both of those people.
- 21:23Speaker 14: Right.
- 21:24Speaker 9: If you want to not like anybody, that damn baby
- 21:27Speaker 9: doesn't do anything.
- 21:27Speaker 10: The puppets were brilliant.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Give them all the Oscars. That was another thing I
- 21:33Speaker 3: want to mention.
- 21:34Speaker 13: The puppetry in that, which, of course, Jim Henson's always great.
- 21:37Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 21:38Speaker 13: But it just, you know, it makes you think about
- 21:42Speaker 13: the special effects in movies now. And it's like they're
- 21:45Speaker 13: still so far behind. the realism and.
- 21:49Speaker 9: I mean you watch that and you're like there is
- 21:51Speaker 9: no green screen here right they're physically doing everything on
- 21:55Speaker 9: screen right.
- 21:55Speaker 13: Even there is one green scene scene with a little
- 21:59Speaker 13: the fire.
- 22:00Speaker 9: Guy yeah yeah but even then even then i'm sitting
- 22:03Speaker 9: there physically doing it they're.
- 22:04Speaker 13: Physically doing it and they're watching the characters and i'm
- 22:07Speaker 13: like there's got to be On that character alone, there's
- 22:10Speaker 13: got to be at least three puppeteers involved. And there's
- 22:14Speaker 13: like five of those guys running around.
- 22:16Speaker 9: Constantly running around.
- 22:17Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 22:18Speaker 9: That one became one that.
- 22:21Speaker 9: I mean, I guess it falls into that category, especially
- 22:25Speaker 9: at the time they came out. But it became kind
- 22:27Speaker 9: of either or for me. And I was always so
- 22:30Speaker 9: Dark Crystal Camp that I was like... I think because
- 22:35Speaker 9: it's so musical... that I'm like, we don't have to
- 22:38Speaker 9: worry about that in Dark Crystal. Like, it's just dark. Like,
- 22:41Speaker 9: it's just weird and dark and doesn't try to be
- 22:45Speaker 9: for kids. Like, it's just got puppets in it. That's it.
- 22:47Speaker 9: That's all you get. Like, there's puppets.
- 22:49Speaker 13: I think on a technical scale and the fact that
- 22:52Speaker 13: there's really no humans in Dark Crystal.
- 22:56Speaker 3: I think it's amazing for that.
- 22:58Speaker 13: But as far as the actual story, for me, it
- 23:00Speaker 13: always just kind of fell flat and was kind of boring.
- 23:03Speaker 9: See, again, I love the Skeksis in general. our main
- 23:08Speaker 9: dude is so annoyingly awesome and kind of seems like
- 23:12Speaker 9: most characters in the real world. Right. He's just creepy
- 23:15Speaker 9: and annoying and I.
- 23:19Speaker 12: Don't know.
- 23:19Speaker 9: I love, I love what's going on in dark crystal.
- 23:22Speaker 9: So yeah, I always had to kind of compare and like,
- 23:24Speaker 9: I didn't watch labyrinth. I didn't, I didn't watch labyrinth
- 23:27Speaker 9: near as much either. So I like, I'd seen dark
- 23:30Speaker 9: crystal billion times and I watch it a few times.
- 23:32Speaker 9: I'm like, yeah, David Bowie's cool. But like, yeah, there's
- 23:34Speaker 9: so much of the other stuff. I'm like, that's a
- 23:36Speaker 9: lot of singing going on. And, I don't know. So
- 23:40Speaker 9: I've learned to kind of appreciate it more over the years.
- 23:43Speaker 9: But yeah, I don't know. Again, it's so much more conventional.
- 23:47Speaker 9: I think that's the thing that always seems weird about
- 23:49Speaker 9: Dark Crystal. You also know he didn't want it to
- 23:51Speaker 9: have English.
- 23:53Speaker 7: Right.
- 23:53Speaker 9: He wanted them to speak their own language. So it
- 23:56Speaker 9: was going to be no humans in it and no
- 23:58Speaker 9: English the entire time. Just gibberish language and puppets for
- 24:03Speaker 9: two hours. I'm like, Jim Henson, you crazy bastard.
- 24:06Speaker 13: Oh, well, and the version we got is two hours
- 24:10Speaker 13: because it ended up being like the work print was
- 24:15Speaker 13: something like five hours or something like that.
- 24:18Speaker 9: So, yeah, sometimes you need somebody on the studio end
- 24:20Speaker 9: to talk you down and be like, okay, okay, I
- 24:23Speaker 9: appreciate your artistry, but let's be realistic. So I like
- 24:28Speaker 9: the honed down version we got, but. Yeah, sometimes I
- 24:32Speaker 9: think about the weird stuff Henson came up with. I'm
- 24:34Speaker 9: just like, you are a genius and a madman. Yes.
- 24:40Speaker 9: But yeah, it's been a while, so that's another one
- 24:43Speaker 9: of those. I feel like I should revisit.
- 24:45Speaker 13: I saw a picture, like a behind-the-scenes picture of the
- 24:48Speaker 13: Dark Crystal, and they were in this set that was
- 24:51Speaker 13: basically the size of a football field. And then you
- 24:54Speaker 13: see Jim and one of the other, it wasn't Frank Oz,
- 24:58Speaker 13: but it was one of the other guys, And they've
- 25:00Speaker 13: got these huge massive puppets which have all these wires
- 25:03Speaker 13: and cables running off off screen. And it's just, I
- 25:07Speaker 13: can't imagine. I can't begin to imagine the technical aspects
- 25:11Speaker 13: of that movie.
- 25:12Speaker 9: I mean, just to run one of them.
- 25:13Speaker 13: How heavy they were.
- 25:14Speaker 9: And then the fact that you've got so many going
- 25:16Speaker 9: at the same time talking to each other. And then
- 25:19Speaker 9: you're still trying to run a movie normally. So all
- 25:21Speaker 9: the horrors of trying to have a movie work anyway
- 25:25Speaker 9: is piled on top of the 48 people running your
- 25:29Speaker 9: puppets right now. The fact that any of those got
- 25:32Speaker 9: made is still kind of amazing.
- 25:36Speaker 12: We need to bring back puppets.
- 25:39Speaker 3: I'm working on it.
- 25:41Speaker 9: I'm still working on my series of puppet short films.
- 25:45Speaker 9: I need funding for those too. That's what's put it
- 25:47Speaker 9: on the back burner.
- 25:49Speaker 13: I bought some foam a couple weeks ago. I didn't
- 25:52Speaker 13: get much further than that yet.
- 25:55Speaker 12: Oh, that just made me remember. When I lived in
- 25:58Speaker 12: New York, I went on a first date with this
- 26:00Speaker 12: guy who was like.
- 26:01Speaker 9: A puppet?
- 26:02Speaker 12: Yes.
- 26:04Speaker 3: It took me all.
- 26:04Speaker 9: Night to figure out, wait a minute. This foamy skin,
- 26:09Speaker 9: these ping pong ball eyes. You're a puppet, aren't you?
- 26:14Speaker 12: The person behind you moving your lens.
- 26:17Speaker 9: He's just my interpreter. Don't mind him. I'm not from
- 26:20Speaker 9: your land. He has to come along with me everywhere.
- 26:24Speaker 12: But he was like a screenwriter and so I was
- 26:26Speaker 12: like well what are you working on and he told
- 26:29Speaker 12: me he's doing a puppet musical of king arthur and
- 26:33Speaker 12: the knights of the round table to which i laughed
- 26:36Speaker 12: because i thought that it would be like a funny
- 26:39Speaker 12: puppet musical you would think he was completely serious so.
- 26:45Speaker 9: That ended the date right.
- 26:46Speaker 12: It really did we didn't go out again mostly.
- 26:51Speaker 9: Because he couldn't believe that you didn't take him seriously
- 26:54Speaker 9: as an artist.
- 26:55Speaker 12: A serious puppet musical.
- 26:57Speaker 13: I've There are a lot of serious puppeteers out there.
- 27:00Speaker 13: It's kind of frightening.
- 27:02Speaker 12: I was just, yeah.
- 27:03Speaker 13: I mean, I love the whole spectrum of it, but again,
- 27:07Speaker 13: I fall more towards the fun.
- 27:10Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 27:11Speaker 13: But yeah, there are people who take it very seriously.
- 27:13Speaker 9: I mean, yeah, there should be a level of professionalism
- 27:16Speaker 9: that you bring to it, but you don't need to
- 27:18Speaker 9: take yourself that seriously as any level of artist, puppetry
- 27:22Speaker 9: or not. As a person, don't take yourself that seriously.
- 27:26Speaker 9: You can take the work seriously. That's appreciated. But some
- 27:29Speaker 9: people take themselves very seriously. And it runs dates.
- 27:34Speaker 12: I was just picturing, like, forgetting Sarah Marshall when he
- 27:37Speaker 12: does the Dracula music.
- 27:39Speaker 3: I was thinking that too.
- 27:40Speaker 9: I was thinking that as you said it.
- 27:42Speaker 13: The thing is, that was, that came from a real
- 27:45Speaker 13: thing that he was working on that was, again, not
- 27:51Speaker 13: supposed to be a comedy. And he feels like that
- 27:54Speaker 13: was what got him the gig writing for the Muppets
- 27:58Speaker 13: was because of that. And he's probably right.
- 28:03Speaker 9: It now just makes me think when we did the
- 28:06Speaker 9: Forgetting Sarah Marshall episode many years ago, I had a
- 28:09Speaker 9: guest on and he was a comic, but he really
- 28:12Speaker 9: liked that movie and he wanted to talk about it.
- 28:14Speaker 9: And I had issues with it. So most of the
- 28:16Speaker 9: way through, I was like, But again, at the end,
- 28:19Speaker 9: I'm like, but that musical is freaking awesome. I don't
- 28:21Speaker 9: even think it was during the show. That's kind of
- 28:23Speaker 9: why I'm telling the story now. After we were done,
- 28:25Speaker 9: he goes... I said something about, you know, the Dracula
- 28:31Speaker 9: puppet and whatever. And he was like, oh, well, let
- 28:33Speaker 9: me show you this. And he, like, rolled up his sleeve.
- 28:35Speaker 9: His whole arm was done with that Dracula puppet from
- 28:38Speaker 9: Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The Dracula Forgetting Sarah Marshall musical puppet was, like,
- 28:44Speaker 9: he has a whole thing on his arm devoted to that.
- 28:46Speaker 9: He loved it so much. And I was like, dude,
- 28:49Speaker 9: we didn't even talk about that. What the hell? Like,
- 28:52Speaker 9: why didn't you tell me beforehand? Like, you are that committed, dude. So, yes,
- 28:57Speaker 9: he was very cool, but extra cool after that. Devoted
- 29:01Speaker 9: your whole arm to puppet Dracula. That's freaking cool.
- 29:04Speaker 11: That is amazing, because.
- 29:05Speaker 13: That's a movie I very quickly forgot.
- 29:07Speaker 9: Yeah, and that was my, it's like there's things and
- 29:11Speaker 9: parts of it that I appreciate, but I'm like, overall,
- 29:14Speaker 9: it's not the greatest. You know, even as a comedy,
- 29:16Speaker 9: it's pretty light. But, yeah, the Dracula puppet on your
- 29:21Speaker 9: arm for all eternity. I'm like, good for you, man.
- 29:25Speaker 7: Committed it's getting kind of hard to believe things are
- 29:28Speaker 7: going to get better i've been drowning too long to
- 29:34Speaker 7: believe that the tide's going.
- 29:36Speaker 6: To turn and i've been.
- 29:40Speaker 7: Living too hard to believe things are going to get
- 29:43Speaker 7: easier now I'm still trying to shake off the pain
- 29:49Speaker 7: from the lessons.
- 29:50Speaker 4: I've learned To add to your enjoyment of the movies,
- 29:53Speaker 4: we offer cold, refreshing, full-flavored drinks Choice popcorn, freshly popped,
- 29:58Speaker 4: crisp and tasty, and richly coated taste-filled candy bars that

- 30:45Speaker 9: of bucks, you can always listen to the horror episodes
- 30:49Speaker 9: and experience the horror with us. Sometimes it is horrific.
- 30:53Speaker 9: I mean, you saw that Topher Grace movie. It's a
- 30:58Speaker 9: different kind of horror sometimes.
- 30:59Speaker 3: I already forgot the name of it.
- 31:00Speaker 9: The Topher Grace movie.
- 31:02Speaker 3: Yeah, it was the Topher Grace.
- 31:04Speaker 9: What's weird, I scrolled through Netflix when we were doing
- 31:07Speaker 9: the upcoming episode, and I got to another title of
- 31:11Speaker 9: a movie, and I'm like, wait, is that the same
- 31:14Speaker 9: movie we just watched before the Topher Grace movie with
- 31:17Speaker 9: the same title?
- 31:18Speaker 4: No.
- 31:19Speaker 9: But a different movie?
- 31:20Speaker 3: So there's a.
- 31:20Speaker 9: Lot of horror movies out there. And yeah, some of
- 31:24Speaker 9: them good, bad, or otherwise. So we take it upon
- 31:27Speaker 9: ourselves to discuss these movies. So join the club now.
- 31:33Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Don't you want to be cool?
- 31:34Speaker 9: Yeah. I mean, really. Don't you want to be cool?
- 31:37Speaker 9: All the cool kids are doing it.
- 31:39Speaker 11: Okay, wait.
- 31:40Speaker 9: Just by being a movie geek, you're already not a
- 31:42Speaker 9: cool kid. Neither are we. So all the geeks are
- 31:46Speaker 9: doing it. Join the club now.
- 31:48Speaker 12: Cool is a relative term anyway.
- 31:50Speaker 9: It certainly is today. Maybe always, but now it's a
- 31:55Speaker 9: very fractured little cool world that we live in. Be
- 32:00Speaker 9: like Brad Pitt. Join. Maybe Brad Pitt will join. He's
- 32:05Speaker 9: in a zombie movie. He might be up for this.
- 32:08Speaker 12: Maybe Topher Grace. Come on, Topher.
- 32:13Speaker 9: Think i included him in one of our tweets i
- 32:18Speaker 9: think it was the one with did you see the
- 32:19Speaker 9: thing i posted that was a picture of him pushing
- 32:21Speaker 9: a cart full of nothing but cereal i think it
- 32:26Speaker 9: was off of his instagram i don't know what it
- 32:27Speaker 9: was but it was just like a cart full he's
- 32:29Speaker 9: like a whole aisle of cereal he's got like 20
- 32:32Speaker 9: different things in his cart and i'm just like see
- 32:34Speaker 9: fruity pebbles that's all you need Hope for Grey's nose.
- 32:37Speaker 3: So that was, I guess, like a thing they just
- 32:39Speaker 3: worked into the movie.
- 32:40Speaker 9: Maybe he really does.
- 32:41Speaker 3: They're like, okay, this guy's obsessed with cereal.
- 32:43Speaker 10: He might really have a cereal obsession.
- 32:46Speaker 9: They're just like, I mean, shit, he's not going to
- 32:49Speaker 9: do this movie unless we buy him Fruity Pebbles. I mean,
- 32:51Speaker 9: just go ahead and work it into the script. Whatever.
- 32:54Speaker 12: He didn't even ask for any payment.
- 32:55Speaker 9: All he wanted was just cereal. Fruity Pebbles? Just, I'll
- 32:59Speaker 9: take my payment and gross of cereal, please. Gross indeed.
- 33:07Speaker 4: The most popular beverage in America.
- 33:09Speaker 9: Do you need a beverage?
- 33:11Speaker 12: Yes.
- 33:13Speaker 9: Would you like some coffee?
- 33:16Speaker 12: Oh, yes.
- 33:17Speaker 9: We can go get some Heine Brothers coffee right now

- 34:41Speaker 9: Why the fuck'd you do that?
- 34:42Speaker 13: I didn't mean to do it. It was an accident.
- 34:52Speaker 13: It's part of your problem, you know.
- 34:54Speaker 11: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 34:55Speaker 12: All of life's riddles are answered.
- 34:57Speaker 3: In the movies.
- 34:59Speaker 13: And now, on with the show.
- 35:04Speaker 14: We are heading out to sea And however it'll be
- 35:12Speaker 14: It ain't gonna be the same Cause no matter what
- 35:18Speaker 14: we see When we're out there on the sea We
- 35:23Speaker 14: ain't gonna see.
- 35:25Speaker 3: A day.
- 35:28Speaker 14: We'll be searching high and low on the deck and
- 35:31Speaker 14: down below.
- 35:32Speaker 3: But it's a crying shame.
- 35:36Speaker 14: Oh, we'll see a lot of fish, but we'll never
- 35:39Speaker 14: clock a dish. We ain't gonna see a day. No day.
- 35:46Speaker 4: We might see some octopuses Or a.
- 35:51Speaker 9: Half a dozen clams.
- 35:54Speaker 10: We might even see a poimade.
- 35:57Speaker 15: But poimade's got no jams!
- 36:01Speaker 3: No jams.
- 36:07Speaker 9: So, one of my this past couple of weeks is,
- 36:12Speaker 9: I guess, inspired by our recent episode we did together.
- 36:16Speaker 9: I watched Hail Caesar, which I had not seen. It
- 36:20Speaker 9: was another one of those sort of comedy Coen Brothers
- 36:24Speaker 9: movies that I and most of the people don't pay
- 36:26Speaker 9: that much attention to. But I'd seen the trailer. I
- 36:29Speaker 9: was like, that looks, you know, fun. And I like
- 36:31Speaker 9: the subject matter. Anything that's a movie making fun of
- 36:34Speaker 9: movies is kind of awesome. So, It's pretty impressive. Once again,
- 36:39Speaker 9: it's as committed as the Coen brothers always are to everything.
- 36:44Speaker 9: It's that only mixed with their love of filmmaking and
- 36:48Speaker 9: at the same time completely satirizing it. So everything they're doing,
- 36:54Speaker 9: it's just set in, I think, early 40s-esque kind of
- 36:59Speaker 9: time period. Or no, I think it's 50s. I think
- 37:01Speaker 9: it's just at the point of everything starting to kind
- 37:03Speaker 9: of change in the system. but you're coming off of
- 37:06Speaker 9: old school, like 40s, big studio stuff. So you're coming
- 37:09Speaker 9: out and we get almost moments of all these different
- 37:12Speaker 9: genres that are still kind of going on too, because
- 37:15Speaker 9: we get a full on Western scene with what is
- 37:21Speaker 9: the Alden, the new Han Solo, which I'd heard that
- 37:24Speaker 9: he was in that. But again, I hadn't seen it.
- 37:26Speaker 9: He's really fucking likable. Like if you haven't, if you
- 37:29Speaker 9: didn't buy him in his new Han Solo world, like,
- 37:33Speaker 9: it's hard to not love this guy in this movie
- 37:36Speaker 9: because he's so earnest and he is just like a
- 37:39Speaker 9: full on cowboy. Like he grew up coming out of
- 37:42Speaker 9: the rodeos and like, they were like, Oh, we want
- 37:45Speaker 9: to make a movie. So they make all these Westerns
- 37:47Speaker 9: with him and they like, he's just doing trick shots
- 37:50Speaker 9: and like flipping off the horse. And like, he's just,
- 37:52Speaker 9: he is committed to that, but that's what he does.
- 37:55Speaker 9: And it's funny that he's like, he's going, he's like, Oh,
- 37:58Speaker 9: if we're going to take a break, I'm gonna go
- 37:59Speaker 9: get some beans. Like, Even during hitting the mess tent,
- 38:03Speaker 9: you know, he's still having beans. So, like, he's that
- 38:05Speaker 9: cowboy mode in his mind. So it's really funny that, like,
- 38:09Speaker 9: one of the studio guys comes over. He's like, well, okay,
- 38:12Speaker 9: we're done with this one. And Monday we want you
- 38:14Speaker 9: to head over here to this. He's like, oh, what for? Well,
- 38:17Speaker 9: the studio is changing your image. So you see there's
- 38:20Speaker 9: this almost, like, this super, like, people with accents sitting
- 38:26Speaker 9: on sofas and talking kind of fancy stuff. And they're
- 38:29Speaker 9: trying to shove him in and he shows up in
- 38:31Speaker 9: a tux and just feels weird and he walks in
- 38:34Speaker 9: and he can't even deliver the lines. That scene is great. Yeah,
- 38:39Speaker 9: he's amazing in this. It may have been my favorite
- 38:42Speaker 9: through line of all of it was just watching him
- 38:44Speaker 9: do his thing because damn he is likable in that movie.
- 38:48Speaker 9: But if anything's carried it like Josh Brolin. Obviously we've
- 38:53Speaker 9: all kind of come to terms with how amazing Josh
- 38:55Speaker 9: Brolin is in the last 15 years but Man, this
- 38:59Speaker 9: movie is just all him. It is following him around,
- 39:03Speaker 9: going through all this craziness, but damn, he's good. He's
- 39:08Speaker 9: just so solid, especially to be this kind of a
- 39:12Speaker 9: hard-ass that he is. He gets to be that Josh
- 39:15Speaker 9: Brolin that, again, he's played a lot in these last
- 39:17Speaker 9: 15 years. So, yeah, watching him go through this old
- 39:22Speaker 9: Hollywood version of everything is pretty damned entertaining. And all
- 39:26Speaker 9: our weird little cameos. Again, like I didn't want to
- 39:30Speaker 9: like Channing Tatum for so long but he's such a
- 39:33Speaker 9: dork like and he really seems committed to all these
- 39:36Speaker 9: things like completely doing a like sound of music singing
- 39:42Speaker 9: in the rain level of like dancing like it is
- 39:44Speaker 9: it is full on Fred Astaire like Danny Kaye like
- 39:48Speaker 9: His musical scene is amazing, and we all know he's
- 39:51Speaker 9: a dancer, but usually it's taking his clothes off. So
- 39:53Speaker 9: the fact that this is really impressively well choreographed, and
- 39:59Speaker 9: it's Janie Tatum being a dork. We get Scarlett Johansson
- 40:05Speaker 9: doing the water... Bubsy.
- 40:08Speaker 3: Berkeley kind of thing.
- 40:09Speaker 9: Yeah, basically the huge water production number thing. Dressed as
- 40:13Speaker 9: a mermaid, of course. Yeah, there's so many weird little
- 40:17Speaker 9: aspects that come into it that, like, I have to
- 40:20Speaker 9: love it, but it's weird that it's also its own
- 40:22Speaker 9: movie outside of these little things they would cut away to.
- 40:25Speaker 9: And you'd spend five minutes going, wait, we're just watching
- 40:27Speaker 9: this whole scene of this now. So, again, you can
- 40:31Speaker 9: tell how much the Coen brothers still love old Hollywood
- 40:33Speaker 9: and yet are completely committed to making fun of it.
- 40:36Speaker 9: Because all of these characters are based pretty, like... pretty
- 40:42Speaker 9: directly on other people that you can be like, Oh,
- 40:44Speaker 9: this is obviously the version of this person. So it's, yeah,
- 40:49Speaker 9: it's a lot of fun for those reasons. Again, it's
- 40:52Speaker 9: back to what I said on, on our Coen brothers discussion.
- 40:55Speaker 9: I can really see why normal people wouldn't care about Coen.
- 41:00Speaker 9: But like, they're so specific in particular that I'm like,
- 41:03Speaker 9: if you get their level of like love for old Hollywood,
- 41:06Speaker 9: you don't think this is great. Normal people would just
- 41:09Speaker 9: be like, well, are we watching all this for like
- 41:12Speaker 9: it is another one of those like you're watching and
- 41:14Speaker 9: like sort of it's that same thing of like there's
- 41:17Speaker 9: a plot going on but it's kind of not so
- 41:20Speaker 9: consequential by the time you get to the end like
- 41:23Speaker 9: the story with Josh and his journey it's really the
- 41:26Speaker 9: only thing that matters like all this other bullshit going
- 41:28Speaker 9: on is just like there's weird communist subplots and like
- 41:32Speaker 9: all this other shit kind of going on at the
- 41:34Speaker 9: same time but by the end you're like yeah none
- 41:36Speaker 9: of that was supposed to matter like it's all just
- 41:38Speaker 9: kind of watching this one character kind of his, his
- 41:41Speaker 9: little arc of like how much he's committed to the
- 41:44Speaker 9: studio system and how much his life is about all
- 41:47Speaker 9: of this craziness. So, yep. I, I love it. But again, you, you,
- 41:51Speaker 9: I think you have to be a Coen brothers person
- 41:54Speaker 9: or just love at least old Hollywood to, to really
- 41:56Speaker 9: appreciate it. Otherwise you'll just be confused.
- 42:02Speaker 12: Well, mine is also Coen brothers related.
- 42:04Speaker 11: All right.
- 42:05Speaker 12: Um, I watched another day, another time. It's basically like
- 42:09Speaker 12: a live concert that all of the music is either
- 42:14Speaker 12: directly from or inspired by Inside Llewyn Davis. So it's
- 42:17Speaker 12: all these like 1960s folk kind of songs. I mean,
- 42:21Speaker 12: it's like Punch Brothers, Milk Carton Kids, Joan Baez, the
- 42:28Speaker 12: Avett Brothers. Just like all these really good folksy people.
- 42:33Speaker 12: Oscar Isaac comes out and sings and plays the guitar.
- 42:35Speaker 9: I would hope so, sure.
- 42:36Speaker 12: He's amazing. I didn't know.
- 42:39Speaker 9: So is this like theatrically released or did they just
- 42:42Speaker 9: put it out?
- 42:43Speaker 12: I don't know. I don't think it was theatrically released.
- 42:48Speaker 12: We just found it on Amazon.
- 42:51Speaker 9: Interesting.
- 42:51Speaker 12: But I guess it's like a companion piece to the
- 42:54Speaker 12: movie somehow. But the music is all really great and
- 42:58Speaker 12: everybody's so talented and it like cuts... back and forth from, like,
- 43:01Speaker 12: live on the stage where they're doing an actual concert
- 43:04Speaker 12: for a bunch of people to, like, in the studio
- 43:07Speaker 12: with T-Bone Burnett and, like, they're rehearsing and everything. It's
- 43:10Speaker 12: really cool and, like, very seamless the way that they
- 43:14Speaker 12: kind of incorporate it all together. And the music is
- 43:16Speaker 12: just gorgeous and awesome.
- 43:19Speaker 9: I mean, they do put so much work into each
- 43:21Speaker 9: of these little areas that they tackle. So, like, yeah,
- 43:25Speaker 9: that was kind of that same thing with Llewyn Davis.
- 43:26Speaker 9: It was like, they'd dove headfirst into that music scene
- 43:30Speaker 9: of that era and that specific subgenre of music. And like,
- 43:35Speaker 9: it's super, again, it's that same thing. It's true to
- 43:38Speaker 9: the time, but they made up a character. So it's like,
- 43:41Speaker 9: it's very similar to other people of the time. And,
- 43:44Speaker 9: but yeah, it's, it's so authentic in the way they
- 43:47Speaker 9: approach everything.
- 43:48Speaker 12: Yeah. It's super cool. So if you liked that movie
- 43:52Speaker 12: and the music in it, you should watch another day,
- 43:55Speaker 12: another time on Amazon.
- 43:59Speaker 9: Good to know it's out there.
- 44:04Speaker 3: Um well honestly um.
- 44:08Speaker 10: I've watched that one movie um and just a lot
- 44:12Speaker 10: of schitt's creek so that's why that's the one movie
- 44:14Speaker 10: outside of movies it's just been like shows i've.
- 44:19Speaker 9: Heard a good amount about schitt's creek so what is
- 44:22Speaker 9: your take on it um still i just i just
- 44:25Speaker 9: don't have time to delve into new shows.
- 44:27Speaker 10: We kind of love it like it's it's pretty amazing
- 44:30Speaker 10: um especially if you're a fan of like the christopher
- 44:33Speaker 10: guest like yeah catherine harold eugene levy movies because they're
- 44:37Speaker 10: both kind of in that mode catherine harris definitely like
- 44:40Speaker 10: the mvp of the show like she's the reason to.
- 44:43Speaker 9: Watch everything she's in really um.
- 44:47Speaker 3: I feel like the show has shifted.
- 44:49Speaker 13: The first couple seasons were mostly focused on the parents,
- 44:53Speaker 13: but now it's shifted towards the kids, which I think
- 44:55Speaker 13: was a brilliant idea. And Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara
- 45:00Speaker 13: have become more like supporting characters. But I think that
- 45:05Speaker 13: was a smart move on their part.
- 45:08Speaker 3: I do, too.
- 45:08Speaker 10: And it's great because it kind of evolves. It doesn't
- 45:14Speaker 10: stay in one kind of mode. Each season, they're branching
- 45:17Speaker 10: out and trying to maybe be a little bit more
- 45:20Speaker 10: serious or sincere with the storyline. But at the same time,
- 45:24Speaker 10: we're a comedy, so we're still going to give you
- 45:26Speaker 10: the laughs. For example, the first season, Eugene Levy's character
- 45:31Speaker 10: is totally just almost... just like entirely just like played
- 45:36Speaker 10: for joe like he's great he's like but he's just
- 45:38Speaker 10: like kind of this dopey like the typical you know
- 45:41Speaker 10: levy character that you're used to seeing in those movies
- 45:43Speaker 10: but like after a while he kind of becomes like
- 45:46Speaker 10: the straight man like kind of it's just it's really
- 45:49Speaker 10: interesting to see eugene levy as like a normal like
- 45:52Speaker 10: person like and like like being dramatic scenes which you
- 45:57Speaker 10: get to see him in later seasons like all the
- 45:59Speaker 10: cast kind of have their own, like, really interesting arcs
- 46:03Speaker 10: going on.
- 46:04Speaker 3: And, yeah, like, the kids, too. Like, Eugene Levy's son
- 46:07Speaker 3: plays his son on the show. And his daughter.
- 46:09Speaker 10: And his daughter, yeah, is in.
- 46:11Speaker 5: It, too.
- 46:11Speaker 14: Oh, really?
- 46:12Speaker 13: And you can tell by the eyebrows.
- 46:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:15Speaker 9: These poor children.
- 46:16Speaker 3: Yeah. And it's his show. Like, he's the showrunner.
- 46:19Speaker 10: And he's, like, his character, his name's... So much.
- 46:23Speaker 3: David. His name's David. And, like.
- 46:27Speaker 10: Everyone says his sister is constantly saying his name in
- 46:31Speaker 10: this weirdly effective... And his mom, they have this weird
- 46:34Speaker 10: way of talking. Yeah, there's a lot of speech comedy
- 46:41Speaker 10: in the show. It's so funny because there's a little
- 46:45Speaker 10: bit of Canadian accent, but also Catherine Harris' character puts
- 46:49Speaker 10: on this totally made up... weird like transatlantic thing that
- 46:54Speaker 10: doesn't really make sense but is hilarious like.
- 46:57Speaker 16: She's genius she really is she is a genius like
- 46:59Speaker 16: honestly she is if this is like prime Catherine O'Hara
- 47:04Speaker 16: like the best like stuff that like she has done
- 47:08Speaker 16: since like Waiting for Guffman like.
- 47:10Speaker 10: We we're constantly like We watched it on Netflix. We're
- 47:14Speaker 10: constantly having to hit the 10 seconds rewind thing because
- 47:18Speaker 10: we're laughing so hard.
- 47:20Speaker 3: And we'll miss a lot.
- 47:21Speaker 10: You'll miss the next joke that's just as funny. So
- 47:24Speaker 10: that's always a good sign.
- 47:25Speaker 3: Good Lord.
- 47:28Speaker 12: How many seasons are there of it now?
- 47:29Speaker 9: I think there's five.
- 47:30Speaker 3: It just started its fifth one.
- 47:32Speaker 14: Oh, dang.
- 47:32Speaker 10: And we're still wrapping up the third one. So we
- 47:35Speaker 10: haven't even gotten up to the current.
- 47:38Speaker 13: There's some good stuff in the fourth season.
- 47:41Speaker 10: Yeah, they say it just gets better and better.
- 47:43Speaker 3: It does.
- 47:44Speaker 13: It took a good turn, but it takes a turn
- 47:48Speaker 13: as far as the sort of humor they deal with.
- 47:52Speaker 3: I mean, it's subtle, but.
- 47:54Speaker 13: If you've been following along, you'll look back on it
- 47:57Speaker 13: and go, wait a minute. This is not the goofy,
- 48:01Speaker 13: silly show that it once was.
- 48:04Speaker 3: It's got some.
- 48:05Speaker 13: It's got some gravitas, for lack of a better word,
- 48:08Speaker 13: to it.
- 48:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:11Speaker 10: It's not like The Office where they're not planning out
- 48:16Speaker 10: things ahead. The creator, Dan Levy, has said that this
- 48:21Speaker 10: is a finite thing I'm doing. The next season is
- 48:23Speaker 10: probably going to be the last. We have it all
- 48:25Speaker 10: planned out. Where a lot of sitcoms is just... Which
- 48:29Speaker 10: is fine with The Office, but it's mostly just jokes and.
- 48:33Speaker 10: Everything and no character really goes any place, you know,
- 48:37Speaker 10: or has an arc, which isn't, you don't necessarily need
- 48:40Speaker 10: that with like a comedy show, but.
- 48:41Speaker 3: Here they like, it's just such a, well, it's such
- 48:45Speaker 3: a good.
- 48:46Speaker 10: Like blending of just like, uh, characters revolving and, you know,
- 48:51Speaker 10: still having ridiculous, you know, laugh out loud moments to, uh.
- 48:56Speaker 6: And chris elliott stops by oh yeah chris elliott's great
- 48:59Speaker 6: i forgot you're wrong but that's the thing that's why
- 49:01Speaker 6: i started watching because when i saw his name in
- 49:03Speaker 6: the credits i was like well i gotta check this
- 49:05Speaker 6: out yeah and then he's he's only in it a
- 49:08Speaker 6: little bit and you kind of forget that he's a
- 49:11Speaker 6: character on the show but then when he shows up
- 49:13Speaker 6: it's like oh yeah.
- 49:14Speaker 13: He's great at this.
- 49:14Speaker 10: It's like a master of just being passive-aggressive to Eugene
- 49:18Speaker 10: Levy's character, which is their scenes together are always the best.
- 49:24Speaker 9: It is weird when something gets a chance to grow
- 49:28Speaker 9: into something else. Usually, especially with shows, you get a
- 49:32Speaker 9: very specific tone and they either have a grand design
- 49:37Speaker 9: and want to do more or they just sort of stay,
- 49:39Speaker 9: especially with old school sitcoms, like you got exactly what
- 49:42Speaker 9: you started with. It does not take it beyond for
- 49:45Speaker 9: nine or 10 years. Doesn't change the banter, the pattern,
- 49:49Speaker 9: everything is still just kind of hitting the same notes
- 49:51Speaker 9: as it did the first one, which at least, you know,
- 49:53Speaker 9: consistency is good for some things. But at the same time,
- 49:57Speaker 9: if you get some of these shows now that are
- 50:00Speaker 9: on a different network or a different way that they
- 50:02Speaker 9: don't have so many other people involved, you get to
- 50:06Speaker 9: see a little more artistry and like you get to
- 50:08Speaker 9: see them kind of grow and become something different, and
- 50:11Speaker 9: that's pretty amazing, especially with a comedy that has the
- 50:16Speaker 9: chance to do something like that. That's cool.
- 50:20Speaker 3: Yeah, great show.
- 50:20Speaker 10: Please watch.
- 50:25Speaker 13: So, I just started this last night, but I started
- 50:28Speaker 13: the new Natasha Lyonne show, Russian Dolls, on Netflix.
- 50:33Speaker 9: I think I saw it listed and don't know much
- 50:36Speaker 9: else about it.
- 50:36Speaker 13: I can't really... I don't know what my take is
- 50:41Speaker 13: on it yet. It's an odd show, which is okay.
- 50:45Speaker 13: But it's basically running off the same premise sort of
- 50:48Speaker 13: as Groundhog Day. Except in this one, she dies. Her
- 50:54Speaker 13: character dies. She leaves a party, gets killed. And then
- 50:59Speaker 13: as soon as she gets killed, she's back at the
- 51:00Speaker 13: party again. And trying to figure out, okay, am I
- 51:03Speaker 13: just really high?
- 51:05Speaker 9: That's been the premise of a couple of movies now
- 51:08Speaker 9: in this last year.
- 51:09Speaker 13: She plays such an unlikable person. I think that's the point,
- 51:14Speaker 13: that you're not supposed to like this, but then you
- 51:16Speaker 13: start to kind of like her a little. And at
- 51:21Speaker 13: the same time, after the second or third episode, I
- 51:24Speaker 13: was like, I'm tired of all this. resetting and going
- 51:27Speaker 13: back through it but i kind of want to see
- 51:30Speaker 13: where it's gonna.
- 51:30Speaker 9: Go it's asking a lot on a series you know
- 51:35Speaker 9: it's like within the context of a movie because like
- 51:37Speaker 9: i said that it almost exactly sounds like happy death
- 51:41Speaker 9: day which is fun like for me extremely fun because
- 51:46Speaker 9: i like that premise and i like the horror angle
- 51:49Speaker 9: that they throw in there But it's that same thing
- 51:52Speaker 9: of it starts as, yeah, like a terrible character. And
- 51:56Speaker 9: because of the resetting, you watch them kind of change
- 51:59Speaker 9: and become somebody different, which again is the Groundhog Day idea.
- 52:03Speaker 9: But it's trying to stretch it out over a series
- 52:08Speaker 9: seems like a lot to deal with from both ends,
- 52:12Speaker 9: like from their angle, but even maybe more so for
- 52:15Speaker 9: the audience to have to commit to coming back to
- 52:18Speaker 9: that same scenario again. And investing that much time into
- 52:22Speaker 9: slowly watching this person maybe change.
- 52:25Speaker 13: Well, and a lot of the things, too, with this,
- 52:27Speaker 13: when she goes back and relives something, a lot of
- 52:30Speaker 13: the details in the background will change. Just like set decorations, costumes,
- 52:34Speaker 13: even people's makeup. And it took me a while to
- 52:38Speaker 13: kind of notice that pattern. So I get the feeling
- 52:42Speaker 13: that by the time they reach whatever conclusion they're trying
- 52:46Speaker 13: to reach, there's going to be all these... like hidden
- 52:50Speaker 13: things that you were supposed to have caught and maybe didn't.
- 52:54Speaker 13: I don't know.
- 52:54Speaker 9: I'm going to keep, I'm going to keep watching it.
- 52:56Speaker 13: For a little while and see where it goes, but,
- 53:01Speaker 13: but it's nice to see her in anything.
- 53:03Speaker 9: So that's the thing. I do really like her in general.
- 53:06Speaker 9: So it, it was one of those, like when she
- 53:09Speaker 9: first hit and she was still really young, it did
- 53:11Speaker 9: seem like, okay, this is going to be like one
- 53:13Speaker 9: of the next big actresses. And like, She's turned up
- 53:16Speaker 9: in stuff over the years, but she never kind of
- 53:18Speaker 9: hit that level. I don't know what exactly it was,
- 53:22Speaker 9: but yeah, she never broke through in a way that
- 53:25Speaker 9: maybe they were planning. Probably not as much as she
- 53:29Speaker 9: would have liked.
- 53:29Speaker 13: And she keeps showing up in really big projects.
- 53:32Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 53:33Speaker 13: I figured when she was in Oranges in the New Black,
- 53:36Speaker 13: that the next thing we were going to see from
- 53:38Speaker 13: her was going to be something huge.
- 53:42Speaker 9: She'd get her own show. Even then, it's got to
- 53:46Speaker 9: be weird. She is a peculiar character. I think she
- 53:50Speaker 9: would have to grow on you in any capacity. She's
- 53:54Speaker 9: a strange performer. I can see it being hard to
- 53:59Speaker 9: fit her into a running theme, a bigger show kind
- 54:03Speaker 9: of a concept. That's a challenge.
- 54:10Speaker 14: Alright.
- 54:10Speaker 9: I think that That rounds out our discussion. We can
- 54:14Speaker 9: at least give them a hint. We can tell the
- 54:19Speaker 9: cool kids to get out their decoder rings. Okay, kids,
- 54:24Speaker 9: get out your decoder pins. Because our upcoming episode, we
- 54:26Speaker 9: are going to be discussing, and this is, again, only
- 54:28Speaker 9: for the.
- 54:29Speaker 7: Really cool kids because this is a.

- 54:59Speaker 9: now and you can partake in that and all of
- 55:02Speaker 9: our other ridiculous discussions about horror What is the minimum again?
- 55:07Speaker 9: Two bucks.
- 55:07Speaker 3: Two dollars.
- 55:08Speaker 9: Two dollars.
- 55:09Speaker 12: Two dollars.
- 55:09Speaker 9: That's all you need to listen to the episodes. So,
- 55:12Speaker 9: I mean, it kind of keeps us alive. I was
- 55:15Speaker 9: discussing the horrible situation it's been to try to keep
- 55:19Speaker 9: things going earlier to these poor bastards. Like, yeah, it's
- 55:24Speaker 9: not just like, hey, I'm rich and I want your
- 55:26Speaker 9: money anyway. It really does keep the show going to
- 55:30Speaker 9: the level that people don't realize. It's kind of the
- 55:33Speaker 9: only way it's survived this last year and a half
- 55:35Speaker 9: or so since we started this.
- 55:38Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 55:39Speaker 9: So, it is not only greatly appreciated, but it gives
- 55:43Speaker 9: us kind of a good way to come up with
- 55:46Speaker 9: something specific to put out there just for these people
- 55:49Speaker 9: that we know actually care enough to kick in.
- 55:51Speaker 13: Yeah, you get a lot of great stuff for that $ 2.
- 55:53Speaker 9: That's what I'm saying. I like being able to craft

- 56:09Speaker 9: Same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 56:18Speaker 15: Bye, everybody.
- 56:23Speaker 7: It's getting kind of hard to believe things are going
- 56:27Speaker 7: to get better. I've been drowning too long to believe
- 56:35Speaker 7: that the tide's going to turn And I've been living
- 56:42Speaker 7: too hard to believe things are going to get easier
- 56:48Speaker 7: now I'm still trying to shake off the pain from
- 56:54Speaker 7: the lessons I've learned Now I see things are going
- 57:08Speaker 7: to be brighter Oh, and feeling you here now I
- 57:12Speaker 7: know I might make it through Oh, loving you this
- 57:20Speaker 7: long has made.
- 57:22Speaker 15: Me believe.
- 57:27Speaker 3: And with you.
- 57:29Speaker 7: These dreams I've gotten might somehow come.
- 57:33Speaker 15: True And knowing your grace this well just makes me
- 57:41Speaker 15: want to be better © transcript Emily Beynon.
- 58:34Speaker 8: I was dreaming Oh, and when I hold your hand
- 58:43Speaker 8: I watch time disappear.
- 58:46Speaker 15: Into the air.
- 59:41Speaker 12: Total genius, and intentionally botched a ton of surgeries.
- 59:45Speaker 13: Oh, jeez.
- 59:46Speaker 12: It's so fucked up.
- 59:48Speaker 11: Oh, my God.
- 59:48Speaker 14: Why?
- 59:49Speaker 10: It's so crazy.
- 59:50Speaker 3: He gets his own podcast.
- 59:52Speaker 12: He's like, yeah, I think he ended up getting sent
- 59:55Speaker 12: to prison. Yeah, what?
- 59:56Speaker 3: Before doing.
- 59:59Speaker 9: I bet he'd have pretty cheap rates. I might be
- 1:00:01Speaker 9: able to go with him. Yeah.
- 1:00:02Speaker 12: I think he got into like pain pills and stuff
- 1:00:05Speaker 12: and just like had vodka under his desk and was
- 1:00:07Speaker 12: like constantly.
- 1:00:08Speaker 9: But again, was he purposefully doing it as though he
- 1:00:11Speaker 9: was just murdering people or he was just a slack
- 1:00:14Speaker 9: ass and was drunken on drugs and just accidentally kind of, oops,
- 1:00:18Speaker 9: killed a bunch of people. Like which mode was he in?
- 1:00:22Speaker 12: They talk about when he was in med school, he
- 1:00:24Speaker 12: was at the top of his class and this total genius,
- 1:00:27Speaker 12: and he invented some new sort of technology.
- 1:00:30Speaker 9: I invented the scalpel.
- 1:00:32Speaker 12: Patented and all this stuff. But yeah, one of his
- 1:00:36Speaker 12: first surgeries was on his best friend, which is a
- 1:00:38Speaker 12: horrible idea.
- 1:00:39Speaker 10: This is like dead ringers or something.
- 1:00:42Speaker 9: So bad. Have an evil twin.
- 1:00:44Speaker 12: He ended up paralyzing him from the neck down.
- 1:00:48Speaker 9: Fun.
- 1:00:49Speaker 12: Fun for everyone.
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: A nightmare world.
- 1:00:54Speaker 12: Yeah.
