- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by the hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Evans Clinic in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street, so get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here. Now, if you have ever had a an
- 0:44addiction or a very strong habit or a compulsion to use certain
- 0:50substances that could be recreational drugs or it could
- 0:53even be certain other things that link to alcohol perhaps or
- 0:58cigarettes or something else, then you'll get some benefit
- 1:02from this session, particularly if you're still using or abusing
- 1:06that particular substance. So in this session, I use lots
- 1:11of metaphors to highlight what it can feel like for a user of a
- 1:18substance that could keep them trapped in some way.
- 1:23And it uses this idea that they're on a treadmill, and this
- 1:27treadmill could go either faster or slower.
- 1:31And it's because they have to keep doing certain things just
- 1:35to stay exactly where they are. Now.
- 1:37The client that I was working with was a cocaine user, but it
- 1:41applies to other things as well. Now for them, they were spending
- 1:47around about £100 a day. That's the equivalent of about
- 1:50$130.00 a day. And that means that a lot of
- 1:53what they were earning just had to kind of fund their habit
- 1:58irrespective of other things like rent and other expenses.
- 2:04So it's part of the treadmill, but of course it requires a
- 2:06certain amount of time investment.
- 2:08It requires a certain amount of thinking about the thing, and
- 2:12that's all this treadmill. And behind the treadmill is a
- 2:15pit, and the pit represents the undesirable consequences of
- 2:20continue to use. That could be financial
- 2:23consequences, it could be emotional consequences, it could
- 2:26be health consequences. Obviously certain drugs might be
- 2:30more at risk of severe health consequences than others.
- 2:35Things like alcohol and cigarettes, you know, can have
- 2:39long term consequences, but less short term consequences.
- 2:43And other drugs might have more intense consequences.
- 2:48I've worked with a few people that were crack cocaine users.
- 2:51Quite often had missing teeth or missing fingernails.
- 2:54That can happen as a direct result of a habit.
- 2:57Sometimes it's linked to certain skin or with cocaine if it's
- 3:01snorted around the septum or upper palate.
- 3:04So it can have a health consequences that are either
- 3:07visible or unknown. It could lead to other health
- 3:09consequences. This is all represented by the
- 3:12pit. Many people that use have
- 3:15difficult relationships with either their partner or family
- 3:18members. So it could be that it leads to
- 3:23something where a relationship ends or the way that someone's
- 3:27perceived, maybe by a child could change.
- 3:30That's all in the pit. Homelessness could be in there.
- 3:34The client I was working with said there were two or three
- 3:37occasions that were it not for a good friend or family member
- 3:42that would have been homeless because it was an expensive
- 3:45habit that meant that they were always on the brink.
- 3:49So the treadmill also represents the financial pressure and the
- 3:52feeling of just having to kind of keep doing what you're doing
- 3:56just to kind of keep your head above water.
- 3:59So the pit represents undesirable consequences.
- 4:03The treadmill is the effort and energy and cost required just to
- 4:07maintain the habit. And then there there's this idea
- 4:10of kind of like almost like a, a child slide, one of those flumes
- 4:14water slides above. So it represents a tunnel.
- 4:17But the reason why I'm using this is to highlight that it's
- 4:20very easy to slide down the tunnel or the slide, but very
- 4:24difficult to climb up it. And that's how lots of substance
- 4:28habits are like it can feel like it's a real effort to break, you
- 4:34know, months or years of use. But they know that they're 2
- 4:37minutes away from sliding all the way back, back down back on
- 4:40the treadmill. So it's a good metaphor from
- 4:42that perspective. And then there's a particular
- 4:45person that represents someone that they really loved calling
- 4:49to their desirable future, which is beyond the tunnel.
- 4:52Now, the reason the length of this tunnel is five days is that
- 4:54this particular client said that on several occasions where they
- 4:58were a few months free of using cocaine, it took about 5 days
- 5:02for their body to adapt. And it was pretty ropy during
- 5:04that five days. So for them, the tunnel is five
- 5:07days. For someone else it might be
- 5:08shorter or it might be longer depending on what it is, but
- 5:12five days felt like a good number for this particular
- 5:15client. And then there's various
- 5:17suggestions about what it would mean for them to be on the
- 5:20treadmill, look down into the pit or climb the the tunnel.
- 5:24The threshold by the way of leaving the treadmill to the
- 5:28tunnel is certain decisions and boundaries.
- 5:33Things like deleting dealers numbers and throwing away any
- 5:36substances that they have or any paraphernalia and and setting
- 5:41boundaries with certain people they might meet.
- 5:43That's quite important because this tends to be the banana
- 5:47skins that get people relapsing into the previous habit.
- 5:50It's a better to kind of mitigate that in advance.
- 5:53This session was created for an individual.
- 5:55Some of the references might not make sense to you, but we're
- 5:58perfect for the client. But if you do like the idea of
- 6:02working with me or maybe you have a habit that you just know
- 6:05that you've been on this treadmill for a while and you
- 6:07don't want to end up in the pit. Or even worse, you don't want to
- 6:09end up just forever on this treadmill.
- 6:12Then there will be a link in the description where you can either
- 6:16do a hypnosis suitability test so you can figure out if you'd
- 6:19be a good candidate for hypnotherapy, or you can book a
- 6:23free consultation call and we can have a chat to see if I'm
- 6:26the right hypnotherapist for you.
- 6:28For now though, this session might actually be the kind of
- 6:31metaphor that really kind of connects and resonates with you.
- 6:34So find a quiet, comfortable place, the kind of place where
- 6:38you're not going to be distracted or disturbed.
- 6:40Relax and enjoy the session. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 7:02you breathe in, breathe in a feeling of calm relaxation.
- 7:07And as you exhale, feel a wonderful sense of release, as
- 7:13if tension, stress or worries are leaving your body.
- 7:18Breathing in that relaxation and and feeling your eyelids getting
- 7:25heavier and heavier as you continue to exhale any tension.
- 7:32Breathing and relaxation and releasing as each breath takes
- 7:43you deeper than the last. And maybe you notice the deeper
- 7:52you breathe, the more resourceful you feel, and the
- 7:59longer you exhale, the more you're letting go with
- 8:03sensations, stresses and worries just leaving your body in that
- 8:09outward breath. That's it.
- 8:17Because the deeper you breathe, the more relaxed you become.
- 8:21The more relaxed you become, the deeper you breathe.
- 8:24A wonderful cycle of ever increasing feelings of
- 8:29relaxation. And as your body relaxes, your
- 8:35imagination awakens. And I want you to imagine a
- 8:42strange combination of things. I want you to imagine a
- 8:48treadmill and you can see the treadmill whirring.
- 8:53It's the kind of treadmill you would see in the gym, a
- 8:59dashboard, electric powered. You set the speed and it just
- 9:07continues to spin round. But behind the treadmill, I want
- 9:14you to see a dark, deep pit. And you already get the
- 9:23connotation that if someone's on the treadmill and can't maintain
- 9:30the pace, then they would go backwards into the pit.
- 9:38But I want you to see something else above.
- 9:43The treadmill is one of those child water slides.
- 9:52You know the ones, Plastic, circular, the kind of flumes
- 10:00that you see in water parks. Now, a slide like that is very
- 10:06easy to slide down, but very difficult to climb up.
- 10:14Not impossible, but difficult. So I want you to imagine a
- 10:20brightly coloured cylindrical slide above the treadmill,
- 10:29leading like a tunnel somewhere else, and you don't know where
- 10:35that tunnel leads yet. All you know is that it's a way
- 10:42of escaping the treadmill and the pit.
- 10:52And I want you to imagine there is a voice that you can hear
- 10:59that comes down the tunnel, a voice of someone that you deeply
- 11:06love and that loves you. And you know that voice doesn't
- 11:14want you to be on the treadmill or end up in the pit, and they
- 11:20are calling you, calling you to climb up the tunnel.
- 11:28You don't know exactly what's at the end of the tunnel yet, but
- 11:33you do know it takes roughly 3-4 or five days.
- 11:39But even if you start climbing up the tunnel, that's what it
- 11:43would take to get to the other side.
- 11:49And I want you to consider that the other side is just a
- 11:55happier, healthier, more fulfilling the future with less
- 12:01stress, less worries, and less pressure.
- 12:06Because that's the key thing that the treadmill represents,
- 12:12relentless pressure. It keeps spinning and spinning
- 12:17and spinning. And if something was to happen,
- 12:22like a trip, which often happens in life, it's very possible that
- 12:28you end up in the pit. And I want you to think about
- 12:34the pit first. The pit is an undesirable
- 12:41outcome. Maybe it's long term sickness,
- 12:49maybe it's homelessness, maybe the pit represents losing a
- 13:00relationship with someone you care deeply for.
- 13:05Or maybe the relationship exists, but something is lost,
- 13:10like love or respect. Maybe the pit represents a waste
- 13:20of an opportunity of not living the life that you could have
- 13:25done. For many people, that's their
- 13:29biggest regret, not living a life that was possible for them.
- 13:39And I want you to imagine gazing down into the pit and getting an
- 13:46idea of what the pit represents for you.
- 13:53Maybe. Maybe it is financial
- 14:01destitution or poverty. Maybe it is sickness.
- 14:10Some people get sick and they have something that means that
- 14:15it becomes almost impossible to then work after that point.
- 14:23Perhaps a stroke or a fall, some kind of scare.
- 14:31And all I want you to do is to consider that the longer anyone
- 14:36spends on the treadmill, the more likely they are to end up
- 14:41in the pit. And because you get to decide
- 14:46what the pit is, I want you to make the pit as undesirable as
- 14:53it possibly could be. I want you to think of a
- 14:57combination of factors that make the pit uniquely undesirable for
- 15:04you. Maybe it's poor health, poverty,
- 15:11homelessness, unemployability, or something else, but when you
- 15:20know for sure what the pit now means for you, let me know by
- 15:26nodding your head. That's it.
- 15:31And let's imagine that certain things can speed up the
- 15:41treadmill. The more you use, the faster the
- 15:48treadmill becomes and the steeper the gradient.
- 15:55I want you to get a sense that losing an income speeds up the
- 16:03treadmill, but I also want you to think that certain things can
- 16:08help you. Finding a good, well paying job
- 16:13might slow down the treadmill. Consuming less means you're
- 16:21still on the treadmill, it's just going slower, making it
- 16:26more manageable. Not desirable, but manageable.
- 16:34And once you've figured out what speeds up or slows down the
- 16:37treadmill, then it's time to get on the treadmill.
- 16:45And once you're on the treadmill, and let's define the
- 16:49treadmill as using your substance, there is only two
- 16:57ways of the treadmill, to climb up the tube and escape the
- 17:04tunnel, or to fall into the pit. But falling into the pit means
- 17:13it's difficult to escape. But climbing up the tunnel means
- 17:20you're travelling towards a more desirable future.
- 17:26It's easy to fall into the pit, you just have to do nothing at
- 17:31all, and the treadmill will take you into the pit, whereas
- 17:42escaping through that cylindrical tunnel requires
- 17:47effort, focus and dedication. But if the future is desirable
- 17:59enough, you will unlock the resources needed to do it.
- 18:08I want you to get a sense that you're on the treadmill and
- 18:13you've been on the treadmill for a while.
- 18:17Maybe it's been months on the treadmill and maybe the
- 18:22treadmill is going faster now than it has been in the past.
- 18:31And I want you to ask yourself a question.
- 18:35How much longer am I willing to be on this treadmill now?
- 18:43That may be minutes. You might be minutes away from a
- 18:49decision to leave the treadmill. And the moment you leave, you
- 18:55will already feel better because you're already in the escape
- 19:02tunnel. Or it might be that you're
- 19:06setting the intention to leave the tunnel, but will actually do
- 19:12what's necessary to leave the treadmill into the tunnel soon.
- 19:19But don't forget, tomorrow never comes.
- 19:25And if not now, then when and why then instead of now?
- 19:33The ancient Chinese have a saying the best time to plant a
- 19:39tree was 10 years ago, but the next best time is now.
- 19:48And maybe it would have been better to escape this treadmill
- 19:54months or even years ago, but the next best time is now.
- 20:03And let's just say something needs to happen to leave the
- 20:09treadmill into the tunnel. We can call this actions and
- 20:17boundaries. The action is to throw away,
- 20:25wash away, discard. Any remaining of the substance
- 20:33you wish to be free of. Consider this a therapeutic
- 20:40symbol, washing away that which no longer serves you.
- 20:46And let's just say throwing away any paraphernalia items, perhaps
- 20:59even clothes or certain accessories used is also part of
- 21:10this symbolic ritual. Because this is a ritual, A
- 21:17ritualistic death of an old identity that no longer serves
- 21:24you. And maybe it's the identity of a
- 21:29user, but it could also be the identity of an abuser.
- 21:39Because if someone else was taking the level of money that
- 21:44you spend from you, you would consider this financial abuse.
- 21:53If another person was causing the health damage to you, you
- 21:57would consider it poisoning or assault or physical abuse.
- 22:06If someone was able to make you feel that dependent, that is a
- 22:11form of coercion of bullying, also abuse.
- 22:18So the very moment that you wash away, throw away or discard
- 22:25anything connected to that identity, you are also throwing
- 22:31away that identity. And the opposite of an abuser is
- 22:41a protector, a guardian. And maybe now is the time to
- 22:52throw away the part of you that is an abuser and step into the
- 22:58part of you that is a protector, a guardian, a protector of you,
- 23:05and a protector of all that you love.
- 23:08And when you feel ready, ready to take the next step, it would
- 23:23also be to create boundaries. Blocking, removing, deleting
- 23:34certain numbers and contacts, or setting a boundary of certain
- 23:38people you're not willing to see or places you're not willing to
- 23:43go. Consider this an access code to
- 23:52that tunnel, and only when you've done all of those,
- 23:59discarded all that no longer serves you, and set the right
- 24:05boundaries and stepped into that identity of being a protector, a
- 24:12provider, then it's possible. But the tunnel gets low enough
- 24:19so you can leave the treadmill and start the ascent.
- 24:27The moment you make this decision feels like a win,
- 24:34knowing that the next few days won't be easy.
- 24:39It's not meant to be easy. It's meant to be worthwhile.
- 24:46And I want you to hear the voice of that person calling you
- 24:50toward the end. They want you to be there.
- 24:56They want you to be healthy and happy.
- 25:00They want you to be the version of you where you are at your
- 25:06best and getting better. And I want you to imagine that
- 25:11perhaps the first two days might be the steepest, but you know
- 25:18that if you can just get through those two days, then the tunnel
- 25:24gets less steep and easier to climb.
- 25:29I want you to get a sense that you are five days or less from
- 25:34escaping the tunnel and you don't have to do too much in the
- 25:40tunnel. It's what you don't do that
- 25:44keeps you climbing. What you can do is think of the
- 25:49future that you desire. What you can do is think of
- 25:54interesting things to do stop you getting bored.
- 25:59You might even do things that make you feel healthy.
- 26:03Eat good food, move your body, go for a walk.
- 26:10But I want you to get the sense that you've done this before and
- 26:13you can do it again with the right boundaries, the right
- 26:18identity, and a feeling that it's worth it to escape this
- 26:25tunnel towards that future. You keep making progress, so
- 26:34keep making progress. Imagine what it would be like
- 26:39for day one, and you get through it.
- 26:44And that first night without using it all, you feel like a
- 26:48champion, like you've won round one of an important battle.
- 26:55And that galvanizes your energy for day 2, and you plan what
- 27:01you're going to do in advance to keep your mind focused and your
- 27:08eye on the prize, that compelling vision of your
- 27:12future. And then imagine day two turns
- 27:17to day three, and it feels easier that the hardest part is
- 27:23behind you. Imagine being tempted, having
- 27:29thoughts that come up, and feeling that even though you're
- 27:34feeling a certain way, or thinking a certain way, nothing
- 27:40is going to get you back down to that treadmill.
- 27:44So you persist, you keep climbing, keep moving forward.
- 27:55But you notice as time goes on, the voice at the other end of
- 28:01the tunnel gets clearer and louder.
- 28:05And imagine that voice telling you all the wonderful things in
- 28:09your future. You're healthier, you're
- 28:13happier, you have more money to spend on what you really want
- 28:19rather than paying for your own abuse.
- 28:23I want you to get a sense that the more you hear what that
- 28:27future is going to be like, the more your resolve increases.
- 28:36They form and you might experience some physical
- 28:41sensations in your body. Some people might call it
- 28:46cravings or withdrawals, but you consider it something else,
- 28:52evidence that your body is adapting, changing, releasing
- 29:02the need to go backwards. And then day five, you know the
- 29:12ones you get through day five. It's almost like the
- 29:17gravitational pull of this habit is losing its grip and you can
- 29:24continue forwards much easier, living life on your terms.
- 29:31So imagine that now, the end of day five, you wake up on day 6-5
- 29:37days free of this substance. I want you to feel like a free
- 29:42man being released from prison. Feel a wonderful sense that you
- 29:50are now out of the tunnel into a bright future, and I want you to
- 29:58imagine seeing everything possible in your future once
- 30:07you've escaped the tunnel. See your health improving.
- 30:14See that your finances have improved.
- 30:19See that you can be an even better provider and carer and
- 30:27guardian because your focus isn't now blurred from a
- 30:34biological habit. I want you to get a sense that
- 30:40this future feels appealing. And sometimes when a major
- 30:48change takes place, other changes follow, not because they
- 30:53have to. But what if you step into an
- 30:57identity of being a healthy heeled protector?
- 31:03There would be other things that a healthy heeled protector also
- 31:07don't do. And then your health can get
- 31:11even better. So just imagine all of the
- 31:15possibilities. I want you to get a sense that
- 31:21this this is just five days away and some things would need to be
- 31:32worked on, but it's the possibility that exists here.
- 31:41I want you to imagine how good it would feel to have been a
- 31:45year in this future, a year of not using and a year of not
- 31:52abusing. And imagine there's a full
- 31:55length mirror. See how much healthier, happier,
- 32:02resourceful you look. And if you can imagine seeing
- 32:06that future, let me know by nodding your head.
- 32:14You deserve this future and you are simply one decision and a
- 32:20few actions away from starting your journey from the treadmill
- 32:28to the tunnel. Not because you have to, but
- 32:33because you desire not to be in that relenting pressure of
- 32:38always having to move forward or you risk falling into the pit.
- 32:46I want you to get a sense that you have planted a seed of an
- 32:48idea in your subconscious mind and you get to decide when the
- 32:54journey from the treadmill to the tunnel begins.
- 32:59But for now, let's leave this place knowing that there is a
- 33:04desirable future just five days away.
- 33:08So take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 33:12nose. Wiggle your fingers and wiggle
- 33:15your toes. Connect and calibrate into the
- 33:18here and the now as I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken
- 33:24you. Starting to count 123 waking up
- 33:28456 more alert 7-8. Open your eyes.
- 33:32Open your eyes, 910. Wide awake, wide awake, wide
- 33:38awake. Thank you so much for joining me
- 33:42on today's episode of The Hypnotist, and if you've enjoyed
- 33:46today's episode, I would encourage you, if you haven't
- 33:49already, to hit the subscribe button or follow button to make
- 33:54sure that you're automatically notified of any future episodes
- 33:59that I release. Also, by doing that, it lets the
- 34:03algorithm know that you like this show, and that will put it
- 34:07in front of even more people that might not know that this
- 34:10show exists. So that would be helpful for me.
- 34:14And if you like the stuff that I do, take a moment just to have a
- 34:17look in the show notes or the description because there's lots
- 34:21of free things that I have to offer, including free hypnosis
- 34:24downloads without the intro or the outro like I'm doing now.
- 34:28So thank you again for joining me on today's episode, and I'll
- 34:32see you again soon for the next one.
