- 1:34Speaker 4: is some there's and I'll call it some strange some
- 1:39Speaker 4: strange stuff that is taking place taking place, has taken place,
- 1:44Speaker 4: and probably.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Going forward is going to be really interesting.
- 1:53Speaker 4: You had you had hit me up earlier about a
- 1:55Speaker 4: situation with with.
- 1:58Speaker 5: Uh situation with the UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka. Again, he's
- 2:04Speaker 5: a UNLV starting quarterback, and essentially what's happening is that
- 2:08Speaker 5: he's chosen to lead the team. He's going to red
- 2:11Speaker 5: shirt because when you red shirt, you can play up
- 2:14Speaker 5: the four games.
- 2:14Speaker 6: Now, so he's played three, he's going to red shirt.
- 2:17Speaker 5: He's leaving the team because there's just a dispute about
- 2:21Speaker 5: NIL payment. So basically what he is a legend is
- 2:25Speaker 5: that somebody on the coaching staff told him that he
- 2:28Speaker 5: was going to get one hundred thousand dollars. Again, it
- 2:31Speaker 5: wasn't and from what the school is stating, it wasn't
- 2:34Speaker 5: a formal agreement, so it's not on paper, it's not document,
- 2:37Speaker 5: it's not contracted. I think he ended up getting paid
- 2:40Speaker 5: about three thousand, which is maybe that like their normal
- 2:43Speaker 5: NIL did for their student athletes, So basically saying, and
- 2:48Speaker 5: I believe him and his family. They've hired an agent recently,
- 2:52Speaker 5: and I think the reason, and again this is just
- 2:54Speaker 5: my own speculation, I think the reason in which they
- 2:56Speaker 5: hired the agent was to say, hey, let's go after
- 2:58Speaker 5: that hundred thousand was promised and basically the school said, hey,
- 3:02Speaker 5: we ain't paying you the hunt and leaving.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Okay, so.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Did we did did we not assume that at some
- 3:12Speaker 4: point in time this could happen?
- 3:14Speaker 5: Yeah, and we talked about remember the kid from Florida. Yes,
- 3:17Speaker 5: from that they signed to Florida. Didn't go right, and
- 3:20Speaker 5: you know, so this this has happened before. So but
- 3:22Speaker 5: I think this case is unique because again, not only
- 3:27Speaker 5: has is he the starting quarterback, but I mean he's
- 3:29Speaker 5: actually they're doing really well. You and l V is
- 3:32Speaker 5: three and oh they got wins against Houston, wins against Kansas,
- 3:36Speaker 5: so they were probably it looks like they were on
- 3:38Speaker 5: their way to competing and and maybe not playoffs, but
- 3:41Speaker 5: you know, getting in the high level bowl game.
- 3:45Speaker 4: All right, So let's start with the Let's start with
- 3:48Speaker 4: the team. Yeah, the the organizational piece to this, Okay,
- 3:53Speaker 4: and I'm the head coach. I shouldn't know if you
- 4:01Speaker 4: if you're my O C offensive coordinator, That's exactly how
- 4:06Speaker 4: they played out.
- 4:06Speaker 5: That's the allegation is that the offensive coordinator offered him
- 4:09Speaker 5: this or he was going to get this.
- 4:11Speaker 4: So the issue for me as the head coach, I'm
- 4:16Speaker 4: losing a player as the player all based on you
- 4:24Speaker 4: either offered something that we didn't have, or you offered
- 4:30Speaker 4: something and and I can't say it's not in writing
- 4:36Speaker 4: because that's the benefit.
- 4:39Speaker 2: For the player to be able.
- 4:41Speaker 4: To go because if it was, if it was actually
- 4:44Speaker 4: legal game, yes, then then then you're kind of locked
- 4:47Speaker 4: or you're either locked to what they said or or
- 4:51Speaker 4: you they either wrote down something a different number than
- 4:54Speaker 4: what you agreed on, which I don't see that. I
- 4:58Speaker 4: don't I don't see that being the case. What I
- 5:02Speaker 4: see being the case is I do think.
- 5:06Speaker 2: The OC who I need you, you, the quarterback, I
- 5:11Speaker 2: need you.
- 5:13Speaker 4: I can't see me promising you something and then maybe
- 5:18Speaker 4: coming back to the head coach or.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Or like trying to figure it out. We'll figure it
- 5:23Speaker 2: out later.
- 5:24Speaker 5: Yeah, Because I mean this guy, this kid again, mas Luca,
- 5:27Speaker 5: he was a transfer in from Holy Cross at the
- 5:30Speaker 5: FCF level.
- 5:31Speaker 2: I mean he's a good quarterback.
- 5:32Speaker 5: I mean he threw for Darner seventeen hundred yards at
- 5:35Speaker 5: the FCS level. He rushed for twelve hundred yards at
- 5:39Speaker 5: the FCS level, twenty nine total touchdowns had. He's six three,
- 5:43Speaker 5: two fifteen, so he's prototypical size. So he's actually a
- 5:47Speaker 5: you know, he's a different he's a decent player.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think because it's not a name that
- 5:52Speaker 4: everybody probably knows because it's not teams that we see
- 5:54Speaker 4: here a lot the legitimacy of his ability it's clear.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, and he's and he's shown it.
- 6:04Speaker 4: But how long did we think that this would go
- 6:08Speaker 4: to with nil that we we don't have some kind
- 6:12Speaker 4: of dispute like because somebody's going to offer somebody And
- 6:17Speaker 4: my question, and I don't know if you know this
- 6:19Speaker 4: because I because I don't. How do I know unless
- 6:24Speaker 4: I'm I come to you as a booster, how do
- 6:27Speaker 4: I know how I can actually.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Pay the ni L money to each individual player?
- 6:33Speaker 4: And if that's on, if that's in a contract kind
- 6:36Speaker 4: of stance, then I have to make sure that money
- 6:40Speaker 4: is coming from somebody or we have it of some sort,
- 6:45Speaker 4: we can generate it and pay it out each week
- 6:48Speaker 4: or each month, whatever the case may be.
- 6:52Speaker 2: How does this get how does this get how does
- 6:54Speaker 2: this get out of? Why?
- 6:55Speaker 5: But UNLV they have a collective. Like I said, I
- 6:57Speaker 5: just think to your point, I think it was a
- 6:59Speaker 5: suit in which.
- 7:01Speaker 2: That offense promise.
- 7:02Speaker 5: Yeah, the offensive coordinators, he's seen what that kid could do,
- 7:06Speaker 5: he's seen what he could you know, how he was
- 7:09Speaker 5: going to make that offense better, and he just say
- 7:11Speaker 5: I'm laying it all on the line. I'm doing whatever
- 7:13Speaker 5: it takes to get that kid. Now, let me ask
- 7:15Speaker 5: you this as a former coach, like what is your
- 7:21Speaker 5: perspective on such not particularly this situation, but situations like this,
- 7:27Speaker 5: like how does it resonate to you?
- 7:30Speaker 4: First of all, I'm not giving you, as my offensive coordinator,
- 7:35Speaker 4: the the okay to say how much money it's going
- 7:39Speaker 4: to be unless I'm telling you that we're giving him
- 7:42Speaker 4: twenty five dollars. Okay, Now you repeat that and giving
- 7:45Speaker 4: him twenty five dollars. But you don't have I don't
- 7:47Speaker 4: see you having the ability unless we've talked about where
- 7:52Speaker 4: you can go.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I have to have told you we can go to
- 7:57Speaker 2: three hundred. Yeah.
- 7:58Speaker 5: But I think in that case then then in this situation,
- 8:02Speaker 5: the head coach steps in and say, okay, that's what
- 8:04Speaker 5: it is, and he sort of formalizes the agreement. But
- 8:07Speaker 5: from all indications, from what the head coach stated, from
- 8:10Speaker 5: what the university stated, I don't think anybody knew outside
- 8:13Speaker 5: of the OC what was offered exactly.
- 8:15Speaker 2: And and if I if I'm not, if I'm not mistaken.
- 8:19Speaker 4: When they're making the case that he's not comment that
- 8:23Speaker 4: he hasn't made like the question is because it's simple, right, hollis,
- 8:27Speaker 4: did you did you promise this? And you say yes
- 8:30Speaker 4: or no? But if I if I've heard correctly, he's
- 8:34Speaker 4: not commenting yeah right now, no? And okay, so what
- 8:38Speaker 4: does that I mean to me?
- 8:39Speaker 2: That's guilt.
- 8:41Speaker 5: I'm not gonna say that. I'm gonna put that on
- 8:43Speaker 5: the man, but it sounds bad.
- 8:45Speaker 2: It does sound bad.
- 8:46Speaker 5: So from a head coaching perspective, if this is the case,
- 8:51Speaker 5: the OC, you caused me to lose our starting quarterback,
- 8:54Speaker 5: who was apparently again got two big wins early in
- 8:56Speaker 5: the season, appears to be really good.
- 9:00Speaker 4: He's at a fireball fence. I think everything about the
- 9:03Speaker 4: situation is fired. So like, go now, there's no we're
- 9:07Speaker 4: going with the quarterback. He's gone now, yeah, yeah, he's gone.
- 9:10Speaker 4: Now he's gone packing up because one something happened. There
- 9:15Speaker 4: was something you and that player had some kind of
- 9:17Speaker 4: communication at some point, like he because he could have
- 9:21Speaker 4: picked any coach, right, he could have picked any coach.
- 9:24Speaker 4: He's saying that you, as the officive coordinator, promised him
- 9:27Speaker 4: this outside of what I said it was gonna be,
- 9:32Speaker 4: and everything is coming back to you.
- 9:35Speaker 2: And then when when you.
- 9:37Speaker 5: Say I don't have a comment, well it may be
- 9:40Speaker 5: the coaches in the school not allowing him to comment
- 9:43Speaker 5: at this time.
- 9:43Speaker 2: That could be the case.
- 9:44Speaker 4: That could be the case. But if that's the case,
- 9:47Speaker 4: we know the truth. Okay, So so you know what I'm saying.
- 9:49Speaker 4: So if if I'm telling you don't say nothing, that's
- 9:52Speaker 4: your comment. When the when the press comes to you,
- 9:55Speaker 4: anybody comes to you and ask you, you say, I
- 9:59Speaker 4: have no comment.
- 10:00Speaker 5: With that being said, and let's just talk about on
- 10:03Speaker 5: the field. Now, Look, you already lost your starting quarterback
- 10:06Speaker 5: who was apparently pretty good.
- 10:07Speaker 2: We don't know what the backup is.
- 10:09Speaker 5: I mean, I think they win a nine to five
- 10:11Speaker 5: last season, so they had a decent season for UNLV
- 10:14Speaker 5: last season, and we don't know kind of the status
- 10:18Speaker 5: of the backup. Are you at this point willing to
- 10:21Speaker 5: lose your starting quarterback and yoc in one week and
- 10:24Speaker 5: you got to start all over moving forward?
- 10:26Speaker 4: Well, let me let me let me let me make
- 10:27Speaker 4: that question even worse. If I'm a player on that team. Yeah,
- 10:33Speaker 4: and you've just done this to the quarterback. If I
- 10:36Speaker 4: know for a fact that you promised him, or at
- 10:38Speaker 4: least you told me that that's what they gave me,
- 10:42Speaker 4: and now they're not holding true to that, why am
- 10:45Speaker 4: I staying?
- 10:47Speaker 2: See, I don't know if.
- 10:48Speaker 4: This is the beginning or if this is just the ending,
- 10:52Speaker 4: the beginning and end of a player leaving.
- 10:56Speaker 2: I'm thinking, what if you're a receiver.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Yeah, if you're a receiver and he's really good, and
- 11:04Speaker 4: you're a pretty decent back and you had a quarterback who.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Was really good, Yeah, because we know what that does.
- 11:09Speaker 2: It opens it up.
- 11:09Speaker 5: It opens it up all of a sudden. So as
- 11:13Speaker 5: a head coach, what do you do? Are you firing that?
- 11:16Speaker 5: I think, are you willing to do that at this point?
- 11:18Speaker 5: Or do you want to wait after the season?
- 11:22Speaker 4: I would probably fire him now, but I'll say this.
- 11:27Speaker 5: But Okay, So if you're firing him, what's the justification? Like,
- 11:31Speaker 5: how are you not that you necessarily have to explain
- 11:33Speaker 5: it to the team, But how are you explaining it
- 11:35Speaker 5: to the team.
- 11:36Speaker 2: I'm going to explain it that.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Coach staff that there should have been some kind of
- 11:40Speaker 4: there should have been a system of how ni O
- 11:43Speaker 4: money was decided on and reported back. If I'm the
- 11:47Speaker 4: head coach, I should be able to tell you it's
- 11:49Speaker 4: the OC. Okay, you can go as high as such
- 11:51Speaker 4: and something. This is what we got, This is what
- 11:52Speaker 4: we got, This is what the budget is. You go
- 11:55Speaker 4: over the budget, you know, you went over the budget
- 12:00Speaker 4: any even how bad the budget is, then we got
- 12:02Speaker 4: a problem. But not only did you do something that
- 12:05Speaker 4: could impact the budget, you just impacted the player and
- 12:10Speaker 4: the team and the team. So I don't know how
- 12:13Speaker 4: you can be beneficial to me after you basically have
- 12:17Speaker 4: disrupted literally the whole the whole structure.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Of the team and the NIL process.
- 12:25Speaker 5: Yeah, because to me, and again, and I ain't you know,
- 12:30Speaker 5: I don't ever want to, you know, have somebody's job
- 12:33Speaker 5: on the line, or I don't want to. I don't
- 12:35Speaker 5: like commenting on people's jobs because you know, that's a
- 12:37Speaker 5: livelihood and all that. But to me, it's like that's
- 12:40Speaker 5: the only thing you can do in this situation as
- 12:42Speaker 5: it stands right now, because to me, what the university
- 12:45Speaker 5: should have did they should have found some money and
- 12:46Speaker 5: paid the kid if it was substantiated that that coach
- 12:51Speaker 5: and did in fact made that promise.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Do you got maybe you don't get a whole hundred grand?
- 12:55Speaker 2: Maybe you work?
- 12:56Speaker 3: Can we.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Can we negotiate? Can we negotiat this with the agent?
- 13:01Speaker 5: Maybe you find something another way, or you pay it
- 13:04Speaker 5: out differently, or whatever has to be done in this situation,
- 13:07Speaker 5: because what happens is now the university of the school, the
- 13:10Speaker 5: coaches that whoever they're not paying the kid, the kid leaves.
- 13:13Speaker 5: Now as the head coach, you almost have to fire
- 13:17Speaker 5: that guy to set a precedent, and it's almost like
- 13:20Speaker 5: you're three and oh, but your darn season got to
- 13:23Speaker 5: start all over again because now trust has got to
- 13:25Speaker 5: be a re established and system has to be in place.
- 13:28Speaker 2: So you almost don't have a choice.
- 13:30Speaker 4: And I don't know this, and maybe I should, and
- 13:34Speaker 4: so I'm hoping maybe that you may know it, but
- 13:37Speaker 4: I have to assume that these.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Nils are are contracts.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I think for the most part, you signed some
- 13:45Speaker 5: side as normally what even I know some states have
- 13:48Speaker 5: allowed the schools to make direct payments, and then some
- 13:51Speaker 5: schools they do it through like what's called a collective,
- 13:55Speaker 5: so they'll have a collective of boosters and companies and
- 13:58Speaker 5: third parties that they'll work with that may be paying.
- 14:01Speaker 5: So that check could come from somebody, it comes from
- 14:05Speaker 5: U N l V.
- 14:05Speaker 2: They have like the the collective or whatever. Okay, So.
- 14:12Speaker 4: I'm again, I think the problem that you have with
- 14:15Speaker 4: with this coach is trust.
- 14:20Speaker 6: Because he's coming the head coach right.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Because he can't who who's gonna listen to him? So
- 14:28Speaker 2: let's say the OC.
- 14:29Speaker 4: Comes to you as as as a as a running
- 14:34Speaker 4: back and and telling you, Okay, Hollis, we're gonna give
- 14:37Speaker 4: you this amount of money.
- 14:38Speaker 5: Are you gonna buy that? Y'all would have to see
- 14:41Speaker 5: it in writing. I mean, you can tell me what
- 14:42Speaker 5: you want to tell me, like, Okay, let's get.
- 14:44Speaker 4: The contract, give it to me, Give it to me,
- 14:47Speaker 4: and I'll accept it. It's enough, It's what I wanted,
- 14:51Speaker 4: But I have to have it in writing now, which
- 14:55Speaker 4: now forces you to do what to go back to
- 14:57Speaker 4: the source of where that money is coming from? What
- 15:00Speaker 4: that's the OC athletic director, booster whoever to confirm that, yeah,
- 15:06Speaker 4: and now that's then it becomes a very clear process
- 15:09Speaker 4: of what you offered or the other other side of
- 15:12Speaker 4: that is you have an amount because he's your guy, right,
- 15:17Speaker 4: you're coaching him. So as the OC, you're gonna come
- 15:21Speaker 4: to me or come to me, go through me to
- 15:24Speaker 4: the booster and say I think we need this much
- 15:27Speaker 4: money for this particular player. We all agree, we we
- 15:32Speaker 4: shoveled in the money, and we're all good.
- 15:35Speaker 2: We're all on the same page. I think this issue
- 15:38Speaker 2: is a clear.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Example of what happens in your NIL process if everybody.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Is not on the same page.
- 15:45Speaker 6: Yeah, and you're not following protogram.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Because generally, even though in the money itself may be
- 15:51Speaker 5: coming from that third party, that collective, it generally is
- 15:54Speaker 5: facilitated through the AD, and the AD generally has to
- 15:58Speaker 5: sign from everything that I underst saying the eighty has
- 16:01Speaker 5: to sign off, or it has to be a process
- 16:02Speaker 5: in which the A the eighty reviews what's kind of
- 16:05Speaker 5: going on, whether it's you know, a direct payment or
- 16:08Speaker 5: through a collective or even endorsements to come through the
- 16:11Speaker 5: Athletic department in some capacity. So it looked like from
- 16:15Speaker 5: what it appears the allegations or allegedly, it appears that
- 16:18Speaker 5: this OC just was like he just said, forget the process,
- 16:21Speaker 5: I need this guy, let's go.
- 16:23Speaker 4: I mean, what's interesting to me too, though, when you
- 16:25Speaker 4: when you talk about that that process.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I haven't heard anything from the AD.
- 16:33Speaker 5: I mean, I think it's coming from the university, So
- 16:35Speaker 5: I would imagine that those comments may be derived from
- 16:37Speaker 5: the eighty.
- 16:38Speaker 4: But wouldn't you like to say, wouldn't you like to
- 16:41Speaker 4: hear specifically what the AD is thinking in this moment?
- 16:46Speaker 2: He's got an AD.
- 16:47Speaker 5: But I don't think you would want to do that
- 16:48Speaker 5: from the university's perspective, because you don't want to open
- 16:52Speaker 5: up different gates of you know, culpability. You kind of
- 16:55Speaker 5: want to just keep it generic and get in, get out.
- 16:57Speaker 4: But it's not gonna at the end of the day, though,
- 16:59Speaker 4: it's not going to be generic. Somebody somebody either promised
- 17:04Speaker 4: or or they didn't.
- 17:06Speaker 5: And but I see, I think the problem with this
- 17:09Speaker 5: is that I think I don't know. I just think
- 17:12Speaker 5: the university handled it wrong because this to me has
- 17:15Speaker 5: implications as far as you know, the whole college football
- 17:20Speaker 5: is this point, because I could see them from this
- 17:22Speaker 5: not necessarily based solely off this base, with this and
- 17:24Speaker 5: the kid what happened in Florida where they didn't they
- 17:26Speaker 5: failed to pay the money that was promised. I could
- 17:29Speaker 5: see players unionizing. I could see because at some point
- 17:33Speaker 5: the n c DOUAA has to come up with guidelines
- 17:36Speaker 5: and rules for this. This isn't the insanity that again,
- 17:39Speaker 5: because I couldn't imagine. You know, it's what is it?
- 17:42Speaker 5: It's Wednesday. So what you're doing on Wednesday? We full
- 17:45Speaker 5: go on Wednesday. We're doing off defense. You know, we're
- 17:49Speaker 5: actually this is where we're you know, we had our
- 17:51Speaker 5: light day Monday. We're back Tuesday. We full go Wednesday.
- 17:54Speaker 5: So this is our practice day. Wednesday. Wednesday is the
- 17:57Speaker 5: day you really get it ease. So this is we
- 18:00Speaker 5: specialties were doing on that on Wednesday. And my darn
- 18:03Speaker 5: quarterback is missing just because of this and now and
- 18:06Speaker 5: now I and now as a coach, I bear the
- 18:09Speaker 5: burden of having to suffer the consequences if we just
- 18:13Speaker 5: win three games and were out of here and based
- 18:16Speaker 5: off this goofy offens coordinator allegedly.
- 18:18Speaker 4: And to to to paint even a clearer picture of
- 18:23Speaker 4: what's taking place. The coaches have already started game planning for.
- 18:29Speaker 2: The next You ready started getting Sunday, right, yes.
- 18:32Speaker 4: So Sunday and Monday they got the game plan set up,
- 18:36Speaker 4: set up, so by Monday practice life practice on Monday
- 18:40Speaker 4: were already talking about this is the defense that they're running,
- 18:43Speaker 4: this is who we think we can attack here, and
- 18:45Speaker 4: da da da da dah. And then you then you
- 18:48Speaker 4: get another day. You know, now you go Tuesday, and
- 18:53Speaker 4: now here you are Wednesday, and you don't even have
- 18:56Speaker 4: you don't even have the guy.
- 18:58Speaker 2: You don't even have the guy that you thought and
- 19:02Speaker 2: can be your guy.
- 19:02Speaker 5: And well people don't maybe who haven't game plan didn't
- 19:05Speaker 5: play particularly college football. What you understand is that, or
- 19:09Speaker 5: maybe what you don't understand is that when you have
- 19:11Speaker 5: a different quarterback, the game plan changes based off the
- 19:15Speaker 5: skill set, because generally, unless you're lucky, you generally may
- 19:18Speaker 5: not have two guys with the exact same skill set,
- 19:21Speaker 5: per se.
- 19:21Speaker 4: It would to that point, it would be it would
- 19:24Speaker 4: be like Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady. If one of
- 19:32Speaker 4: those guys, let's say Brady's the starter and he's out
- 19:36Speaker 4: so the game plan now changes because of the athleticism
- 19:42Speaker 4: of Mahomes, you know, so you can actually now change that,
- 19:46Speaker 4: you can change and put some new things in because
- 19:49Speaker 4: of that ability. So that's the importance of actually having
- 19:53Speaker 4: a game plan.
- 19:54Speaker 5: And like I said, and just to talk about sort
- 19:56Speaker 5: of like the bigger picture of this, this is just
- 19:59Speaker 5: really this heartening that this is where we're at with
- 20:01Speaker 5: college football. To me, college football college sports in general
- 20:05Speaker 5: was like sort of the last sanctuary of what we
- 20:09Speaker 5: thought sports were at a high level when you had,
- 20:12Speaker 5: like I said, the Saturday Morning Heroes, when you had
- 20:14Speaker 5: those guys who were staying for at least three years,
- 20:17Speaker 5: because unlike basketball, college football you.
- 20:20Speaker 6: Stayed for three years.
- 20:21Speaker 5: So we got familiar with those guys and then they
- 20:23Speaker 5: were off to the proof they were good enough.
- 20:25Speaker 6: And just the level of movement.
- 20:27Speaker 5: Like I said, this kid, Matthew Slock, I'd mess up
- 20:31Speaker 5: his name, the quarterback from UNLV. He came from Holy
- 20:35Speaker 5: cost he was at UNLV. Now he'll end up going
- 20:37Speaker 5: somewhere else strictly pretty much based off money money, and
- 20:41Speaker 5: again and again, I ain't got a problem. You gotta
- 20:43Speaker 5: get yours, but we gotta get some sort of stipulations
- 20:46Speaker 5: on this because.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Again, that movement just in a matter of three.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Years going to be three years three teams, right, three
- 20:57Speaker 4: years three teams essentially, Yeah, that's not even possible. That's
- 21:01Speaker 4: not even possible at the pro level.
- 21:05Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. You don't have that opportunity
- 21:09Speaker 2: to be able to do that at the pro level.
- 21:10Speaker 5: Yeah, Man, to me, just stuff like this hurts the game, man,
- 21:13Speaker 5: It really, it really damages the game to me.
- 21:17Speaker 4: And let me okay, for everybody who's listening, and you're
- 21:23Speaker 4: a fan of a team, and you've got a great quarterback,
- 21:28Speaker 4: you've got a great running back, you gotta whatever, whatever,
- 21:31Speaker 4: you got a great team as a whole, and all
- 21:34Speaker 4: of a sudden, heading into the next week, you lose
- 21:40Speaker 4: some of these particular players or a particular player simply
- 21:43Speaker 4: because that's the part simply because a deal fell through. Yeah,
- 21:52Speaker 4: how how do you respond to that? Because that's it
- 21:56Speaker 4: doesn't even work that way in the league.
- 22:00Speaker 5: I mean you'll see like the holdouts the beginning of
- 22:02Speaker 5: the season, and they.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Don't typically hold out very long because.
- 22:06Speaker 5: It's costing, you know, So, I man, this is just
- 22:10Speaker 5: I don't know, man, Like I said, I don't want
- 22:12Speaker 5: to sound old school. I don't want to sound like compurious,
- 22:14Speaker 5: but I just think at some point, like we have
- 22:17Speaker 5: to come up with a Like I said, I believe
- 22:19Speaker 5: you and LV they should have worked out an agreement
- 22:21Speaker 5: and we should have never heard of this. But I
- 22:24Speaker 5: think at a higher level, the NCAA has got to
- 22:26Speaker 5: do something. I mean, to to be that flawed of
- 22:29Speaker 5: an organization, to be around for this long, to have
- 22:33Speaker 5: this much money, and to to have this much a
- 22:36Speaker 5: quote unquote acclaim it just to be this raggedy of
- 22:39Speaker 5: an organization. It's just amazing to me that they're still
- 22:42Speaker 5: operable because this is stuff like this, like you should
- 22:46Speaker 5: have seen this coming. This should have been handled, you know,
- 22:49Speaker 5: two three years ago.
- 22:50Speaker 2: I'm gonna probably say something.
- 22:51Speaker 4: I'm gonna say something probably I probably shouldn't say probably, But.
- 22:57Speaker 2: This is what happens. I think.
- 22:59Speaker 4: I think it's it's the same thing that's happened in
- 23:01Speaker 4: high school. I think the same thing happens in youth football.
- 23:08Speaker 4: You get folks in a room and what they think
- 23:14Speaker 4: is best for the league, a team, whatever the case
- 23:21Speaker 4: may be, and they make these decisions too. Like to me,
- 23:26Speaker 4: I think it's like this freedom of the athlete. You know,
- 23:30Speaker 4: the athletes have to have this freedom. They should have
- 23:32Speaker 4: they should have the ability to play wherever they want.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Okay, So then.
- 23:40Speaker 4: Then there's no reason anybody talking about community spirit.
- 23:45Speaker 2: That's done right.
- 23:46Speaker 4: Yeah, there's no all those all the kind of things
- 23:50Speaker 4: team unity, school unity, all of those kind of things,
- 23:54Speaker 4: you might as well just say okay, because none of
- 23:56Speaker 4: those things exist.
- 23:57Speaker 2: So when you're creating these rules, you're killing.
- 24:02Speaker 4: All of the sustain all the things that mean something
- 24:08Speaker 4: in high school, college, in college.
- 24:11Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 24:11Speaker 5: And a lot of times it's done selfishly because you're
- 24:14Speaker 5: just thinking about you. Because we were talking last week
- 24:17Speaker 5: and we were talking about like the PAC twelve and
- 24:19Speaker 5: the kind of its disbandonment at this point, And what
- 24:23Speaker 5: I was saying was just like it was great, particularly
- 24:25Speaker 5: on a Saturday when you have something to do.
- 24:28Speaker 6: Your Saturday was taken up. You can't watch no college ball.
- 24:30Speaker 5: But I could come in, everybody in the house sleep,
- 24:34Speaker 5: it's ten nine o'clock and I can watch.
- 24:38Speaker 2: UCLA.
- 24:38Speaker 5: I could watch USC I could watch Oregon, I could
- 24:41Speaker 5: watch Washington. Like they've killed that because now they're playing
- 24:45Speaker 5: in the freaking Big twelve or Big ten or whatever.
- 24:48Speaker 2: I don't even know where they're at now, you know
- 24:50Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
- 24:50Speaker 5: So it's like everything about what they have done to
- 24:55Speaker 5: a sport that I cherish and love, it's just been terrible.
- 24:58Speaker 5: They haven't made the game better now other than allowing
- 25:01Speaker 5: the players to get some money.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Well, and and to your point, there there are people
- 25:05Speaker 4: who and I'll just use the old kV C. They
- 25:10Speaker 4: they didn't even have to think about all the teams
- 25:12Speaker 4: that was in the kV C.
- 25:13Speaker 2: They knew who was in the kV C.
- 25:15Speaker 4: Now you don't know how many teams, Like there are
- 25:19Speaker 4: certain teams now that you have no idea what conference
- 25:21Speaker 4: they're in, and you and you know that they're not
- 25:25Speaker 4: you know, they're not playing in the valley And it
- 25:28Speaker 4: makes no and and why and what was what's the
- 25:32Speaker 4: benefit of it?
- 25:33Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 25:35Speaker 4: Is anybody? Is anybody? Did you go to the South
- 25:38Speaker 4: Charleston game? The game last week?
- 25:40Speaker 2: Okay?
- 25:41Speaker 4: Who who wants to go to that game? I mean
- 25:46Speaker 4: I know, but I no, no, no, I get that,
- 25:49Speaker 4: But watching it, watching how the game went, I mean,
- 25:56Speaker 4: is it is that? I mean, I know you're a
- 25:58Speaker 4: GW guy and meeting South thruston always good.
- 26:00Speaker 6: I'm a South Charleston MG. There yeah, I'm gonna tell
- 26:03Speaker 6: you first.
- 26:04Speaker 4: But again, looking watching the game, there's no there's nothing
- 26:08Speaker 4: interesting about it. It's like, okay, well looks like it's
- 26:12Speaker 4: gonna be a blowout, and you know we just have
- 26:14Speaker 4: to wait until the clocks end just to see how
- 26:17Speaker 4: bad it is.
- 26:18Speaker 2: That's not what you want for high school football. That's
- 26:20Speaker 2: not what you want for sports period period.
- 26:22Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 26:23Speaker 4: You want you want to be able to come to
- 26:25Speaker 4: a game and watch the game and know that it's
- 26:30Speaker 4: going to be a good game. I'm competitive, yes, at least, yeah,
- 26:35Speaker 4: come on, let's be competitive. Win or lose against GW,
- 26:39Speaker 4: win or lose against Old Charleston High, win or lose
- 26:43Speaker 4: against Stone Wall. You knew it was going to be
- 26:46Speaker 4: a good game. And now we how many games do
- 26:50Speaker 4: we get every weekend? Forty something to nothing, seventy to nothing,
- 26:56Speaker 4: you know, like what fifty to fourteen?
- 27:00Speaker 2: Like are you kidding me? Yeah?
- 27:02Speaker 5: Man, it's like they just to your point, man, It's
- 27:06Speaker 5: I don't know, man, I think it has to be
- 27:08Speaker 5: a reckoning. And like I said, I think it has
- 27:10Speaker 5: to be a point where you know, they just week
- 27:13Speaker 5: we cannot facing.
- 27:14Speaker 7: Bad things happen to good people in this serious car
- 27:17Speaker 7: accident or wrongfully arrested life happens, and when it happens
- 27:22Speaker 7: to you, you will sound and aggressive representation.

- 27:47Speaker 4: playing a team that is even worth is even worth playing? Yeah, man,
- 27:54Speaker 4: And I just don't know. I just don't know, Like
- 27:59Speaker 4: how are we thinking that this is okay?
- 28:00Speaker 5: Yeah, it's free agency at every level, and it's just
- 28:03Speaker 5: like I said, it's just not necessarily making the game better,
- 28:05Speaker 5: like I said, unless we wanna as far as high
- 28:07Speaker 5: school sport, unless you're just gonna play a national schedule maybe,
- 28:11Speaker 5: but you know, other than that, it's just a sass situation,
- 28:15Speaker 5: particularly at.
- 28:15Speaker 2: The college level. And I love college football. That's my
- 28:18Speaker 2: favorite sport.
- 28:19Speaker 4: Well and again because it's it's it has the same
- 28:22Speaker 4: types of freedom and more freedoms. Right, I was gonna
- 28:26Speaker 4: say freedoms and people who can make these decisions really easy.
- 28:32Speaker 4: You're gonna see these types of things continue to happen,
- 28:35Speaker 4: and I just think the games are all gonna go.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Are gonna go this way?

- 29:59Speaker 2: All right, So, Brett Fahr, So we have.
- 30:09Speaker 4: You know, one of the most notable quarterbacks in recent history,
- 30:16Speaker 4: I guess, has come out and stated that he has
- 30:20Speaker 4: dementia Parkinson's and.
- 30:25Speaker 5: And he and in addition, he studied, probably sustained maybe
- 30:29Speaker 5: a thousand concussions during his playing career.
- 30:33Speaker 4: And the crazy thing about that, you know, when you
- 30:36Speaker 4: when when when when the public heres that that number,
- 30:39Speaker 4: you know, they may take that literally. I'm gonna say,
- 30:45Speaker 4: and I don't know as a fact, but he probably
- 30:50Speaker 4: had so many that it might as well have been
- 30:54Speaker 4: a thousand.
- 30:55Speaker 5: And again, when you have concussions, it's different grades. And
- 30:59Speaker 5: no question, and I said.
- 31:02Speaker 4: And the only, the only reason I wanted to justify
- 31:04Speaker 4: that is is because again, you know, football is already
- 31:08Speaker 4: a challenging sport and people are a little bit afraid
- 31:11Speaker 4: of it now or a lot afraid of it now.
- 31:13Speaker 4: So I don't want them to think that, you know,
- 31:15Speaker 4: maybe that that was you know, I don't because I
- 31:18Speaker 4: make the case that probably zero players could actually count
- 31:21Speaker 4: how many times a day I've had a concussion, because
- 31:25Speaker 4: you know, we went through the phase of ring your bell,
- 31:29Speaker 4: you know, all these different terms, and.
- 31:32Speaker 5: Then like just the way you get it, because it's
- 31:34Speaker 5: not just like a head on head can collision this right,
- 31:37Speaker 5: you get tackled a certain way, then your head can
- 31:39Speaker 5: hit the hit the turf in a variety of ways
- 31:42Speaker 5: that you can get a concussion.
- 31:44Speaker 4: And so a lot of times and a lot of
- 31:46Speaker 4: times when two helmets take two linemen make contact inside
- 31:51Speaker 4: of the line of scrimmage, you know, one may be
- 31:56Speaker 4: he may get his ball rung and we don't even
- 32:00Speaker 4: see it and he and he's gonna shake it off
- 32:03Speaker 4: and come right back, you know, and and may never
- 32:06Speaker 4: report it.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think.
- 32:12Speaker 4: You know, you you start looking and I'll say this,
- 32:16Speaker 4: when you start looking at quarterbacks in in in this
- 32:21Speaker 4: era now, or I'll say Brett Fahr, you know, his
- 32:27Speaker 4: long tenure running into this time. I feel like what's
- 32:32Speaker 4: happened is these quarterbacks are.
- 32:34Speaker 9: Going for years and years and years and years and
- 32:39Speaker 9: knowing the older that you get your escapability. Yeah, you know, yes,
- 32:47Speaker 9: and and and and.
- 32:48Speaker 4: And you're running into these situations of getting you're getting caught,
- 32:52Speaker 4: you're getting hit, you can't get out the pocket, You're
- 32:55Speaker 4: throwing a touchdown pass and get hit, and you're you
- 32:58Speaker 4: get up and you're excited because you throw the touchdown
- 33:00Speaker 4: and you're ignoring the hit.
- 33:03Speaker 5: So let me ask you, Ken, I'm glad you brought
- 33:05Speaker 5: this up, because, like I would say that Brett Farb
- 33:08Speaker 5: is sort of the I think a lot of quarterbacks
- 33:12Speaker 5: now based their style off of how he played, particularly
- 33:15Speaker 5: his thrown ability and the angle said he used, and
- 33:18Speaker 5: it's sort of his reckless style of playing. Should there
- 33:21Speaker 5: be like when we're talking about the NFL pro level,
- 33:25Speaker 5: should there be a cap on the number of years
- 33:28Speaker 5: that you can play? Should should you be like man man,
- 33:31Speaker 5: NFL you got fifteen? Or I never really I never
- 33:35Speaker 5: thought about that. Hollis based off like because again, if
- 33:38Speaker 5: he's saying he has Parkinson, then he's saying he got
- 33:41Speaker 5: a thousand concussions, just like maybe Ali for exactle Muhammad Ali,
- 33:45Speaker 5: He's basically saying, I probably got this from all them
- 33:48Speaker 5: hips that I sustain.
- 33:49Speaker 4: I think that there is there is there is there
- 33:51Speaker 4: is a way to dissect a player's career and look
- 33:55Speaker 4: at it and say, hmmm, he's thinking about another year,
- 34:00Speaker 4: or he signing a contract another he signed in a
- 34:03Speaker 4: three year contract with a team he made.
- 34:07Speaker 2: You know, we don't think he can make three.
- 34:09Speaker 4: Now, when you say that we don't think he can
- 34:12Speaker 4: make three, that becomes an unfair assessment because he might
- 34:16Speaker 4: be able to make three, but him making that three,
- 34:21Speaker 4: how does he make that three? Because like I said
- 34:26Speaker 4: my lap, I was gonna, I was gonna retire my
- 34:28Speaker 4: last season with the Vikers.
- 34:30Speaker 2: They cut me.
- 34:30Speaker 4: I go to New Orleans, So I was gonna So
- 34:33Speaker 4: I was gonna retire after that last season.
- 34:37Speaker 2: How many years total did you play? Twelve?
- 34:40Speaker 4: So I'm I'm I'm sitting there thinking to myself that Okay,
- 34:44Speaker 4: this is gonna be my last year. I get in,
- 34:50Speaker 4: I get into that season and I realized that, you know,
- 34:53Speaker 4: my my skill set is has has legitimately.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Gone, like I had lost it and I couldn't.
- 35:01Speaker 4: I couldn't cover the way that I had covered before,
- 35:04Speaker 4: and I couldn't get to the ball the way that
- 35:05Speaker 4: I could see it.
- 35:06Speaker 2: And couldn't get to it. So I know I was
- 35:10Speaker 2: knowing that I couldn't.
- 35:14Speaker 4: I didn't know prior to the season, but in the season,
- 35:17Speaker 4: during about during just about midway through the season, I
- 35:20Speaker 4: realized that, oh man, I'm I'm I'm stuck.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Now, I'm playing.
- 35:24Speaker 4: I'm on the field trying trying to make plays and
- 35:27Speaker 4: I don't have I can't I can see plays and
- 35:31Speaker 4: can't get there. And I knew for me it was
- 35:36Speaker 4: time to go. I just I wasn't gonna just I couldn't.
- 35:39Speaker 4: I couldn't imagine like going in the middle of the season.
- 35:42Speaker 4: So I was trying to get the season, get to
- 35:45Speaker 4: the end of the season, and retire, which I did.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Players know, a lot of a lot of players know.
- 35:51Speaker 5: You know physically, yes, you know physical, but cognitively that
- 35:56Speaker 5: might not show up for a while or you may
- 35:58Speaker 5: ignore that part of it.
- 35:59Speaker 2: And it made not for a quarterback who's primarily mental.
- 36:04Speaker 4: Okay, like a lot of the past quarterbacks primarily was mental.
- 36:10Speaker 4: As long as they knew who was going where, they
- 36:13Speaker 4: figure out the coverage, know who's going in that hole,
- 36:16Speaker 4: they could throw that ball. But the issue becomes the physicality.
- 36:21Speaker 5: For them, the physicality, and I think somebody specifically just
- 36:25Speaker 5: too Brett Farb. Not to say I'm not trying to
- 36:29Speaker 5: accuse him of not being a smart quarterback, but I
- 36:31Speaker 5: think the manner in which he played, he wasn't necessarily
- 36:34Speaker 5: cerebral like a Peyton manny right.
- 36:37Speaker 6: He played sort of like you know, backyard style.
- 36:41Speaker 5: So even if he was having some sort of a
- 36:43Speaker 5: cognitive decline during his play playing days, it may have
- 36:47Speaker 5: not been recognizable just because of the style in which
- 36:51Speaker 5: he played wasn't necessarily based off that. It was based
- 36:54Speaker 5: off gunsling and I'm gonna just get it in there
- 36:56Speaker 5: to see who open and throw the darn thing.
- 36:58Speaker 4: I don't think not a single player on the Saints
- 37:05Speaker 4: or not a single player even if with the Vikings,
- 37:07Speaker 4: would have said that they thought, like, you know, I
- 37:11Speaker 4: was having any issues.
- 37:13Speaker 2: You know, I could I.
- 37:15Speaker 4: Couldn't make plays, you know, I don't, you know, because
- 37:19Speaker 4: they because you could make a play, right, and if
- 37:23Speaker 4: you make a play, the play that you miss nobody's
- 37:25Speaker 4: worried about that.
- 37:26Speaker 2: They're not saying, oh, you know, he might be a
- 37:29Speaker 2: little too old.
- 37:29Speaker 4: Now, he can't make that play as long as you're
- 37:31Speaker 4: out there, as long as you're making the tackle or maybe.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Getting to a ball. But it's bigger than that. And
- 37:39Speaker 2: and and you know the catches is you know.
- 37:44Speaker 4: The play, the play that you can't make that you
- 37:47Speaker 4: you you know you know now whether or not anybody
- 37:51Speaker 4: else knows, now, I guarantee there was nobody else knew.
- 37:55Speaker 4: They just figured, you know, Okay, they threw the curl
- 37:57Speaker 4: route and Carl tackled it.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Okay.
- 37:59Speaker 5: But back to the question is that should there be
- 38:01Speaker 5: a capital NFL careers?
- 38:04Speaker 4: Well, again, if I give you example, I signed a
- 38:07Speaker 4: three year deal and in two years, you're thinking, look, hey,
- 38:10Speaker 4: we think you need to probably sit down. And and
- 38:13Speaker 4: the and the way contracts are signed are set up
- 38:16Speaker 4: is the most money is at the end of that contract.
- 38:19Speaker 4: I'm trying to get to the end of that contract.
- 38:21Speaker 4: So now I don't know if you're trying to cheat
- 38:23Speaker 4: me out of my last contract or you're doing this
- 38:27Speaker 4: for me.
- 38:28Speaker 2: But the problem is I ain't gonna do it for me.
- 38:31Speaker 4: Yeah, you you you are likely going to be the
- 38:34Speaker 4: person who's gonna have to do it for me.
- 38:36Speaker 2: But I'm chasing that last contract, you know, that last you.
- 38:38Speaker 4: Know, they gave me five dollars, ten dollars and one
- 38:41Speaker 4: hundred dollars in that last deal. Man, I'm getting to
- 38:44Speaker 4: that last deal. Even if I'm fifty five, you know,
- 38:47Speaker 4: and I got half a leg. As long as I
- 38:49Speaker 4: can make the team, I'm gonna play. That's That's the
- 38:52Speaker 4: unfortunate thing about football and how players think.
- 38:56Speaker 6: And like I said, I mentioned this last week.
- 38:59Speaker 5: I mean, this is the game, unfortunately, whether you like
- 39:02Speaker 5: it or not, this is the game, and this is
- 39:04Speaker 5: what it is, and this can be a result, just
- 39:06Speaker 5: like being a boxer.
- 39:07Speaker 2: You know, this is it.
- 39:10Speaker 4: And and we and we've seen it and and and
- 39:15Speaker 4: I'm gonna give it a kind of as an analogy,
- 39:17Speaker 4: just to to to to paint this picture.
- 39:21Speaker 2: Everybody who loved Muhammad Ali.
- 39:23Speaker 4: Or hated him in his last fights, you watched.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Him and you.
- 39:31Speaker 4: And you knew, you knew, you could see the decline,
- 39:37Speaker 4: you could see the issues that were taking place.
- 39:42Speaker 2: And everybody felt bad. The same thing is true in football.
- 39:47Speaker 4: You just don't get the chance to actually see it
- 39:50Speaker 4: because the player can make a play. He can make
- 39:52Speaker 4: a tackle, he can pick up a he can get
- 39:54Speaker 4: an interception, he can get a fumble, he can catch
- 39:56Speaker 4: a ball, he can run a touchdown, he can block somebody.
- 40:01Speaker 4: But what you can't see is the struggle in his
- 40:04Speaker 4: own mind, and the struggle even that can be physical,
- 40:09Speaker 4: that he could have mentally and physically, you know, and
- 40:12Speaker 4: you just don't.
- 40:14Speaker 2: You don't see that.
- 40:15Speaker 4: And because you don't see that, the idea of you
- 40:18Speaker 4: trying to cut somebody's salary or cut somebody's career off,
- 40:23Speaker 4: saying you need to stop, this is your last season,
- 40:25Speaker 4: we think that the.
- 40:27Speaker 5: Same because again it can just be you know, maybe
- 40:31Speaker 5: just having a bad day or bad year and you're
- 40:33Speaker 5: gonna bounce back. So I can see that, I can
- 40:36Speaker 5: see a bunch of problems with that. Yes, it's just
- 40:39Speaker 5: that you know.
- 40:39Speaker 4: There would be a good now outside medical observation and
- 40:48Speaker 4: decision could be good. You can't have you can't you
- 40:51Speaker 4: can't have anybody that's connected to the teams, no team
- 40:55Speaker 4: doctors or nothing like that. The potential could be. You know,
- 40:59Speaker 4: and I and so let me ask this question to you.
- 41:03Speaker 4: Does it matter to you if I'm physically able to play,
- 41:06Speaker 4: or if I or mentally because I can be physical,
- 41:11Speaker 4: see to me, I was physically not capable or continuous
- 41:16Speaker 4: could I wasn't physically able to continue play at a
- 41:18Speaker 4: level that I that I was comfortable at. Yeah, then
- 41:23Speaker 4: there's the other player that's that's mentally unable to play.
- 41:27Speaker 5: Yeah, how do we do? I think ownership and NFL's
- 41:32Speaker 5: time after time. You know, you can take a guy
- 41:34Speaker 5: like Antonio Brown who's obviously having some sort of mental
- 41:38Speaker 5: health issues that hey, if you can strap it up,
- 41:41Speaker 5: you can go. So I think they've they've said like, look,
- 41:44Speaker 5: if you're physically able to pay, you're going to play again.
- 41:47Speaker 5: And when you start talking about cognitive decline, when you
- 41:50Speaker 5: start talking about mental health issues, those can be very touchy.
- 41:53Speaker 5: So I don't know, even from a hippo standpoint, like
- 41:56Speaker 5: how do you get around those issues? How do you
- 41:59Speaker 5: what's that assessment looking like? That assessment degree is going
- 42:02Speaker 5: to be different for different guys. So again, I think
- 42:06Speaker 5: it's just, unfortunately is the nature of the game. And
- 42:09Speaker 5: I think players now, because we've seen a lot of
- 42:11Speaker 5: players retire early, they're thinking about that. So you know,
- 42:14Speaker 5: maybe it's something that's gonna just they'll self manage that
- 42:17Speaker 5: as opposed to being told. And with the money now too,
- 42:22Speaker 5: if you manage your right, you don't have to play
- 42:24Speaker 5: as long as you did back in the day.
- 42:26Speaker 4: Right right, And but again if if you, if you,
- 42:30Speaker 4: if you're leaving, who who's gonna walk away from five million.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Dollars but for your last year.
- 42:38Speaker 5: But the thing is, if you got thirty stacked up,
- 42:41Speaker 5: then maybe maybe maybe it's maybe it's a similar decision.
- 42:45Speaker 4: See, I would I would make the case just because
- 42:49Speaker 4: I think nobody wants to leave. And this should be
- 42:52Speaker 4: used to be something everybody will say, you don't leave
- 42:54Speaker 4: money on the table, right, Like you can't leave that
- 42:55Speaker 4: money on the table, and if it's if because it
- 42:59Speaker 4: was there for you.
- 43:00Speaker 2: You know.
- 43:01Speaker 4: And like my biggest contract with the Vikings is the
- 43:03Speaker 4: year they cut me. And the reason that they cut
- 43:06Speaker 4: me was because they didn't want to pay me, you know.
- 43:09Speaker 4: And so you have that that that's part of the
- 43:13Speaker 4: issue too, is we can get maybe we can get
- 43:16Speaker 4: Hollis out of here and not have to pay him
- 43:18Speaker 4: and we're clean because you know, we think he's mentally
- 43:22Speaker 4: or physically.
- 43:22Speaker 2: Unable to play. That's the thing.
- 43:24Speaker 5: So it's it's a bunch of issues that it's not
- 43:26Speaker 5: necessarily gonna be clean. Plus so I don't know how
- 43:28Speaker 5: you would even approach that because I could see lawsuit
- 43:31Speaker 5: after lawsuit after lawsuit.
- 43:33Speaker 4: Yeah, and and when you start throwing the agent in there,
- 43:37Speaker 4: that's yeah, because the agent agent's not He don't want
- 43:41Speaker 4: to give up the money either. He want that, yes
- 43:44Speaker 4: for sure, which which leads me to I got it.
- 43:48Speaker 4: I got a message, a text message today from from
- 43:53Speaker 4: a buddy of mine that was actually and I think
- 43:56Speaker 4: he's over in Wisconsin and Viking fan and Tommy Kramer
- 44:05Speaker 4: has just announced that he went to the doctor, had
- 44:11Speaker 4: to check up and has and they're giving him two
- 44:15Speaker 4: to ten years.
- 44:18Speaker 6: Ten years.
- 44:19Speaker 4: You said, yes, two to ten years between that time,
- 44:23Speaker 4: two to live now. One of the things I had
- 44:29Speaker 4: said off air to Hollis is like, I don't want
- 44:32Speaker 4: to You know, most people I think know Tommy that
- 44:37Speaker 4: if you're old enough, you know Tommy Kramer. You know
- 44:39Speaker 4: kind of his history quarterback for the Vikings.
- 44:44Speaker 2: It was a great quarterback, won some great games.
- 44:50Speaker 4: Came after after Frank Tarkington, and you know was you
- 44:55Speaker 4: know good scrambler was.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Good, good, good, tough, player.
- 45:02Speaker 4: He but he struggled with with with with alcohol and
- 45:07Speaker 4: for for a long time. And and the guy that
- 45:14Speaker 4: I'm going to, the guy that I'm going to Minnesota
- 45:17Speaker 4: with Tommy stays with them, and so Tommy will probably
- 45:23Speaker 4: be he'll probably be in Alaska as well. They take
- 45:28Speaker 4: they pretty much take care of him and you know,
- 45:31Speaker 4: have him out and about, you know, doing different signings
- 45:34Speaker 4: and stuff like that.
- 45:38Speaker 2: And it's it's hard for me to know, it's hard
- 45:40Speaker 2: for me.
- 45:40Speaker 4: To to try to dissect, you know, this situation because
- 45:49Speaker 4: I feel comfortable in thinking that I know that the
- 45:52Speaker 4: cause has been you know, I think has been the
- 45:55Speaker 4: whole alcohol for such a long time. And like I said,
- 45:59Speaker 4: he just stopped and he's I think it's been a
- 46:01Speaker 4: year now since he's since he's had a drink.
- 46:03Speaker 9: And he moves, he moves slow.
- 46:08Speaker 5: And he you know, he So let me ask you this,
- 46:11Speaker 5: during that time, did they have because I know they
- 46:13Speaker 5: had like the drug rehab programs through the league and everything. Now,
- 46:17Speaker 5: did they have those sort of programs back then?
- 46:19Speaker 2: No, they didn't.
- 46:20Speaker 4: And and and there were there were a lot of
- 46:24Speaker 4: guys who who who drank a lot, and you could
- 46:28Speaker 4: make the case and I'll make the case that the
- 46:31Speaker 4: best cornerback that I've ever seen and ever been on
- 46:35Speaker 4: the field with is a guy by the name of
- 46:38Speaker 4: Isaac Holton. I've said his name before on the show.
- 46:41Speaker 4: He was from Alcorn. He shut Jerry Rice down in
- 46:45Speaker 4: in college, and he he had a huge drinking problem.
- 46:50Speaker 4: I'm not sure you know if he's still if he
- 46:53Speaker 4: still has it or not, you know, And there's tons
- 46:57Speaker 4: and tons of stories that I could tell about it,
- 46:59Speaker 4: but I don't. I don't want to go into that
- 47:02Speaker 4: because because at the end of the day, these types
- 47:05Speaker 4: of players who are so good and and and so great,
- 47:11Speaker 4: you know, and when when you get yourself caught up
- 47:13Speaker 4: into that alcohol and and.
- 47:16Speaker 2: It captures you, you know, and it consumes you, you.
- 47:23Speaker 4: Know, and you know, when you when you start talking
- 47:26Speaker 4: about just drinking any kind of alcohol, like you know,
- 47:30Speaker 4: you're not gonna drink the same drink twice. When you
- 47:34Speaker 4: start talking about doing that and and making that as
- 47:37Speaker 4: a competition in in in the bar, that's you know,
- 47:40Speaker 4: that's a that's a challenging thing, you know. And you know,
- 47:46Speaker 4: but with Tommy's situation, you know what bothers me is
- 47:51Speaker 4: it really makes me kind of funny inside is is
- 47:56Speaker 4: because like he finally decided to stop, you know, and
- 48:02Speaker 4: and like I said, he's been he's been sober now
- 48:04Speaker 4: and hadn't had to drink for a year. And then
- 48:07Speaker 4: now now you turn around and here we are in this.
- 48:11Speaker 5: Kind of situation and you know, and maybe him stopping
- 48:15Speaker 5: it can maybe prolonged you know, his life. But I
- 48:19Speaker 5: think now, I mean, I think it's good that, you know,
- 48:22Speaker 5: not only just professional sports, but I think industries, you know,
- 48:27Speaker 5: throughout at least this country are recognizing that people who
- 48:30Speaker 5: are suffering from substance use disorder, that this is a disease,
- 48:34Speaker 5: this is a disorder, this is something that necessarily they're
- 48:37Speaker 5: choosing to go at least this deep end, and they
- 48:39Speaker 5: can actually you know, get some help. So I think
- 48:42Speaker 5: that unfortunately, he was just probably in a time where
- 48:45Speaker 5: you know, that's just wasn't the prevailing thought, you know.
- 48:50Speaker 4: And yeah, yeah, because you don't you don't know that
- 48:52Speaker 4: that's where you're heading. When he first took a few drinks.
- 48:56Speaker 4: I'm going to make the case he did not think
- 48:58Speaker 4: that this would be how he would be ending his life,
- 49:02Speaker 4: you know, And I know, for men and the help
- 49:04Speaker 4: wasn't available right right in the middle of it, right,
- 49:06Speaker 4: and yes, exactly, you know, and again there wasn't coaches.
- 49:11Speaker 4: Coaches wasn't complaining about him because he could he could play.
- 49:15Speaker 4: Like they didn't complain about him taking a nap instead
- 49:18Speaker 4: of not seeing the meetings because they knew he was
- 49:21Speaker 4: a smart guy. He could figure it out. He would,
- 49:23Speaker 4: he would get into film work, he could do that on.
- 49:25Speaker 2: His own time.
- 49:26Speaker 5: And see, that's the that And just to relate it
- 49:28Speaker 5: with like kind of the breath farb comment, that's the
- 49:30Speaker 5: same thing, like if you can play, sometimes a lot
- 49:33Speaker 5: of things just get overlooked, and those things don't get addressed.
- 49:37Speaker 5: Maybe and not to say not to you know, a
- 49:39Speaker 5: sign blame to anybody, but those things often get overlooked
- 49:44Speaker 5: when you just can play, when you're a good guy,
- 49:46Speaker 5: when you're a good player. And I think now we're
- 49:48Speaker 5: at a point in time where those things aren't being overlooked,
- 49:52Speaker 5: where you have to address that.
- 49:53Speaker 6: If you see it, you have to.
- 49:54Speaker 5: Say something, whether it's a mental health issue, whether it's
- 49:57Speaker 5: an SUD issue or something to that effect.
- 50:00Speaker 4: Yeah, And and I know, like I said, I didn't,
- 50:05Speaker 4: I didn't I didn't drink but I didn't drink. And
- 50:07Speaker 4: then I started drinking a little bit in college. But
- 50:10Speaker 4: when I got to the league, I mean that picked up.
- 50:13Speaker 4: Like and I was a guy who you know, was
- 50:15Speaker 4: a non drinker, non smoker, all that, and but I
- 50:20Speaker 4: got to a point where, like you know, I was,
- 50:22Speaker 4: I was drinking and I was drinking heavy and and
- 50:24Speaker 4: we talked a little bit in the studio prior to
- 50:28Speaker 4: coming on air. Some of that I think comes with
- 50:34Speaker 4: the atmosphere and in sports, and let's just say entertainment, yeah,
- 50:41Speaker 4: because sports basically is an entertainment.
- 50:44Speaker 2: And then what what you do.
- 50:46Speaker 4: After you know, basically almost every day after practice, basically
- 50:52Speaker 4: you go go somewhere to go have that happy hour,
- 50:55Speaker 4: have you a few drinks, and then intent is to
- 50:58Speaker 4: have a few drinks.
- 50:59Speaker 2: You got and then all of a sudden, you got
- 51:00Speaker 2: seven or eight guys in there. That's your buddies.
- 51:03Speaker 4: And you stay there longer You're gonna keep drinking there.
- 51:06Speaker 4: Next thing you know, you you know, you're you're driving home.
- 51:09Speaker 4: You had quite a few to drink. Probably don't eat dinner,
- 51:14Speaker 4: fall asleep on the couch, wake up, nibble on something,
- 51:16Speaker 4: then go to bed up and do the same thing,
- 51:18Speaker 4: and you be and that routine becomes normal.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Like there was, there were certain days that you know,
- 51:25Speaker 2: and we didn't do. We didn't do. We weren't big.
- 51:27Speaker 4: On Friday nights and Saturday nights because you had games
- 51:31Speaker 4: on Sunday. We was using in a hotel on Saturday night,
- 51:34Speaker 4: so Sunday night was a big night in Minneapolis.
- 51:39Speaker 2: But we would do happy hour. Happy hour was the
- 51:41Speaker 2: big thing. So now you come, we're coming straight from practice.
- 51:45Speaker 4: We're drinking, going home, eating, repeating those kinds of things
- 51:51Speaker 4: and never even.
- 51:52Speaker 2: Paying attention to it.
- 51:53Speaker 5: Yeah, like I said, unfortunately, man, you just get caught
- 51:56Speaker 5: up in that lifestyle. And again, I think that certain
- 51:59Speaker 5: industries are conducive to that because when you look at
- 52:01Speaker 5: you know, like you said, entertainments, you look at sports,
- 52:04Speaker 5: when you even look at you know, high stress professions
- 52:06Speaker 5: like you know, you look at law enforcement, teachers, lawyers,
- 52:09Speaker 5: different things of that nature, you'll find a lot of
- 52:11Speaker 5: alcohol and sud within those industries just because of the
- 52:15Speaker 5: stress levels. And you need, not necessarily need, but there's
- 52:18Speaker 5: a need for some individuals for that release.
- 52:22Speaker 4: See, I think I think, I think you were right.
- 52:24Speaker 4: I think there is a need. You think I think
- 52:27Speaker 4: it is actually a need to like get away from it.
- 52:33Speaker 4: And I and I'll even make this, I felt like
- 52:35Speaker 4: when we would when we would go to happy Hour,
- 52:38Speaker 4: we were probably like about two blocks away from from
- 52:42Speaker 4: this hotel bar. We would go, and it was it
- 52:46Speaker 4: was like to forget practice and all. You know what
- 52:49Speaker 4: I'm saying, It was just it was just to go
- 52:52Speaker 4: and just kind of all of a sudden create this
- 52:55Speaker 4: this distance from.
- 52:57Speaker 2: Who you were, what what people thought you were.
- 53:01Speaker 4: So being there and Happy Hour a lot of times
- 53:04Speaker 4: were less people there. Then you get on your weekends
- 53:08Speaker 4: and then and we would go on a regular basis,
- 53:12Speaker 4: so what would what was good about that people were
- 53:14Speaker 4: used to seeing us in there, so they didn't quote
- 53:17Speaker 4: bother you coming up asking you questions or wanting an
- 53:22Speaker 4: autograph or whatever, because you try to because what you
- 53:26Speaker 4: want is you want away from all that. When when
- 53:29Speaker 4: we were going, we were trying to go. We weren't
- 53:31Speaker 4: trying to go to the biggest place.
- 53:33Speaker 2: Yeah, you go to the chills.
- 53:34Speaker 4: We want to go to a chill spot and just
- 53:37Speaker 4: chill out and not have to deal with a lot
- 53:39Speaker 4: of people talking about last week's game, asking about this
- 53:44Speaker 4: week's game, asking about such and such.
- 53:46Speaker 5: And that's crazy because that's the same thing that happens
- 53:48Speaker 5: with like law enforcement. It's exact same thing that happens
- 53:50Speaker 5: with lawyers in different industries. It's the exactly you want
- 53:53Speaker 5: to get away from it, and you cut on that
- 53:55Speaker 5: little group and you're getting drinks and everything to sort
- 53:57Speaker 5: of get away from it, but you ain't really getting
- 53:59Speaker 5: away now, you know what I.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Mean, because there's really no place. There's really no place
- 54:03Speaker 2: to go.
- 54:04Speaker 5: But like I said, I think the positive in this
- 54:07Speaker 5: if there is a positive in this story. Number one,
- 54:09Speaker 5: like he found sobriety, and number two, like I said,
- 54:13Speaker 5: not only just the NFL and sports, but I think
- 54:16Speaker 5: most industries now have some sort of protocol for, you know,
- 54:20Speaker 5: individual suffering with substitute disorder.
- 54:22Speaker 4: He lives with with with Buddy Becker, and Buddy Becker
- 54:25Speaker 4: is is the gentleman who's taken us to Alaska on
- 54:31Speaker 4: this trip. So hats off to him. And like I said,
- 54:35Speaker 4: he lives, he keeps Tommy lives with them. They take
- 54:40Speaker 4: care of him.
- 54:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:41Speaker 5: Just pray, like I said, we just pray for him
- 54:43Speaker 5: to get better. Yeah, hopefully he can, he can go.
- 54:45Speaker 2: Longer, hopefully. So Yeah, hopefully so.
- 54:49Speaker 5: But I wanted to mention, you know, like I said,
- 54:52Speaker 5: we talk about obviously, you know WVU got a big
- 54:55Speaker 5: win this weekend. They needed it, Marshall. They took a thumping,
- 54:58Speaker 5: but it wasn't bad as we thought. And talk about Colorado.
- 55:03Speaker 5: I don't know if you saw the game.
- 55:04Speaker 2: I was up.
- 55:05Speaker 6: I watched Terry Bidders, probably the best game of the season.
- 55:08Speaker 5: And again, just speaking of the n C double A,
- 55:11Speaker 5: I hope y'all don't mess this up. Travis Hunter is
- 55:16Speaker 5: the best college I don't care if they don't win
- 55:18Speaker 5: another game. He's the He's the best college football player
- 55:21Speaker 5: right now. He's number one. I don't I don't care.
- 55:25Speaker 5: It ain't a quarterback. It ain't nobody better than him
- 55:27Speaker 5: right now. He got not only did he catch a
- 55:31Speaker 5: hundred yards receiving, plus he made the game winning force fumble.
- 55:34Speaker 5: N ot that kid is the man.
- 55:36Speaker 4: Well, and I was gonna say to your point, the
- 55:42Speaker 4: fact that he's playing both ways affciently yet high level,
- 55:48Speaker 4: high level, Yeah, game winning situations on both sides of
- 55:52Speaker 4: the ball. Yes, like he can make the game winning
- 55:54Speaker 4: catch and he can make the game winning and you
- 55:57Speaker 4: can argue that he actually did.
- 55:59Speaker 5: He didn't make the game when he catched, but he
- 56:01Speaker 5: actually sets it up. He says he had the long pass.
- 56:03Speaker 5: It was like a forty fifty yard pass from Sanders.
- 56:06Speaker 5: And then turn around on defense and made the game
- 56:08Speaker 5: win a defensive play.
- 56:09Speaker 4: Well, and and and I'm gonna I'll throw a little
- 56:13Speaker 4: bit of a wrench in there. I'm I'm I'm thinking
- 56:20Speaker 4: that the quarterback is quarterback.
- 56:23Speaker 2: Is good too.
- 56:23Speaker 5: No, he sh door center is the best quarterback in
- 56:26Speaker 5: the country to me. But I think what what Travis
- 56:31Speaker 5: Hunter is doing is oh im precedent. No, yeah, you
- 56:34Speaker 5: have to you have I can see where they could
- 56:36Speaker 5: both be on the stage. But the quarterback he would
- 56:39Speaker 5: have to win. Yes, they gotta go, They gotta go undefeated,
- 56:44Speaker 5: you know what I mean? You so, But so I
- 56:46Speaker 5: think the standard, unfortunately with fairy unfair is a little
- 56:49Speaker 5: different for Sanders as opposed to Hunter.
- 56:52Speaker 4: We've never we've never seen this, We've not seen this
- 56:57Speaker 4: in the modern air and we've not and I and
- 57:00Speaker 4: for sure it's never been done this good.
- 57:03Speaker 5: Yeah, one hundred percent, Because I think even like Charles Woodson,
- 57:06Speaker 5: he was a defensive player, play some offense, but I
- 57:08Speaker 5: don't think he was like every snap offensive guy.
- 57:10Speaker 4: He came in on packages. Yeah, and and and that's
- 57:13Speaker 4: a different thing. Yeah, I mean you are part of
- 57:16Speaker 4: the offense. Yeah, he's he's a receiver, he's starting receiver.
- 57:19Speaker 2: Yeah. And you are a major part of the defense
- 57:21Speaker 2: starting he's shutting. He's a shut down corner.
- 57:24Speaker 6: That's I mean, I ain't can tackle.
- 57:26Speaker 5: Yes, yes, you know so, like I just because we
- 57:29Speaker 5: talked about the n C double A and that's that's
- 57:31Speaker 5: just a terrible organization in my mind. It has been
- 57:33Speaker 5: for a long time. And I hope they don't screw
- 57:36Speaker 5: this up. So I hope the Heisman Committee. Are you
- 57:40Speaker 5: staying up late watching the games? Please tell me you are.
- 57:46Speaker 2: I don't. I don't think you don't trust it. I
- 57:48Speaker 2: don't trust it. I don't trust it. I don't trust it.
- 57:52Speaker 4: I think they've got all kinds of excuses that are
- 57:55Speaker 4: none are justified. Yeah, but I think that they'll come
- 57:58Speaker 4: up with some excuse because because it's not Notre Dame,
- 58:03Speaker 4: because it's.
- 58:04Speaker 5: Not USC, because none of that, Because the first four
- 58:08Speaker 5: games of this season has a right now he can
- 58:10Speaker 5: fall off a clip, but as a right now.
- 58:12Speaker 4: He ain't following the land slide he ain't falling off.
- 58:16Speaker 4: The only thing that could happen, God forbid that.
- 58:18Speaker 2: He gets hurt.
- 58:19Speaker 5: Okay, but the only thing because he ain't falling off.
- 58:21Speaker 5: You you're right about that, because right now it ain't.
- 58:24Speaker 5: I don't see a vote going to nobody else.
- 58:26Speaker 2: There shouldn't be a vote going anywhere. He is it.
- 58:28Speaker 2: You can't vote for anybody, Elyes.
- 58:30Speaker 6: I just don't see it.
- 58:32Speaker 5: I mean, he having one hundred plus yards, got receiving,
- 58:35Speaker 5: got interception forst fumbles, tackles, doing it all. He probably
- 58:39Speaker 5: played special teams. If coach Prome.
- 58:41Speaker 4: Lddy Dion coach Prime was one of the greatest players
- 58:50Speaker 4: in the NFL.
- 58:51Speaker 2: And part of that too was because he literally could
- 58:56Speaker 2: do anything, could do anything. He could do anything.
- 59:00Speaker 4: Now you're talking about somebody who's taking that do anything,
- 59:03Speaker 4: like like you said, playing a few plays on offense.
- 59:07Speaker 2: You know, maybe you can put Dion on a couple
- 59:10Speaker 2: of players in offense. Yea da dah. But you're talking
- 59:12Speaker 2: about he coming off the field.
- 59:14Speaker 6: He ain't coming off the field. Coacht A special team.
- 59:17Speaker 4: Special team is the only time he come and he
- 59:18Speaker 4: got time and he.
- 59:20Speaker 5: Probably got a force all special teams. He probably want
- 59:23Speaker 5: to go return kicks and punts and stuff like that,
- 59:25Speaker 5: and probably could do it well, and probably could do
- 59:26Speaker 5: it well. You know, It's just I just hope this guy,
- 59:30Speaker 5: I hope this organization don't mess it up because we
- 59:32Speaker 5: talk about suits and I see a lot of suits
- 59:35Speaker 5: on that committee.
- 59:36Speaker 4: Well, and unfortunately, like you said, this is because it's
- 59:40Speaker 4: not even a question.
- 59:41Speaker 2: It's not a question.
- 59:42Speaker 4: I mean, there's there's there's no You can't bring anybody's
- 59:45Speaker 4: stats to the table. Say you could have the you
- 59:49Speaker 4: could have the most outstanding offensive stats that you that
- 59:51Speaker 4: you want.
- 59:52Speaker 2: Where's your defense? What are your defensive stat said?
- 59:55Speaker 4: You could have seven interceptions, you can have fifteen socks.
- 59:59Speaker 2: Where's your offense at?
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: And I hope that we get back to a point
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: where we're saying this is the best player, not the
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: best player on the best team, because.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: I think for it and again that valid point.
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: And not to hate on Alabama, but I think a
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: lot of those Heisman winners from Alabama they were just
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: simply the best player on the best team, not necessarily.
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: I mean, even I would say Derrick Henry the year
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: he wanted Christian McCaffrey was clearly the best college football
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: player in the country. Geno Toretta Marshall Falk was clearly
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: the best player, a football player in the country. So
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: we need to get back to who's the best football team?
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: Excuse me, who the best player? Who's the best player?
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: Even there's an argument for Orlanto pay So he's an
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: office a line. When we was up, he was pure dominant.
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: So we got to get back to that, you know
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: what I'm saying. So hope, hopefully, hopefully we can do that.
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: And let's let's all remember as we get ready to
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: get out of here that Hollis Lewis brought this up,
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: so he'll be with so so we'll all be waiting

- 1:00:57Speaker 4: I think he's got a valid point. All Right, I'm
