Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Stages of the Non-Reactive State of Being
Transcript
- 0:01Most people do not reflect on the state of their inner being.
- 0:05They tend to live on the surface and respond or react to whatever
- 0:09happens to come their way. They become happy or unhappy
- 0:14based on how circumstances impact them.
- 0:18They are essentially under the control of external events or
- 0:21happenings and are blown about like leaves in the wind.
- 0:27The spiritual seeker takes a different standpoint.
- 0:30For the seeker, the status of his inner being is of great
- 0:34significance as it shows the readiness and preparedness of
- 0:38the being to be receptive to new forces and states of
- 0:41consciousness, as well as provides a marker along the way
- 0:46for the progress in this type of development.
- 0:49Sri Aurobindo and the Mother therefore define states of being
- 0:53that are important stages in the development of true peace and
- 0:58the power of equanimity. Sriorobendo defines 4 states
- 1:03here that provide a successive development from an outward
- 1:07quietude to a complete inward silence.
- 1:11Each stage reaches deeper into the being and becomes a power of
- 1:16being that is less and less under the control of outward
- 1:19happenings and more and more directed by the spiritual
- 1:23consciousness that awakens in the inner being.
- 1:28There is a well known phrase in the modern world about how we
- 1:32become upset or angry when someone insults us or otherwise
- 1:36attempts to disturb us. Namely, we are letting that
- 1:40individual live rent free in our head.
- 1:43This is an example of a lack of the calm or peace that is the
- 1:47basis of spiritual strength, and it also exemplifies the control
- 1:52that we give to outer events to dominate our lives.
- 1:57True strength comes when one can receive the forces and pressures
- 2:01of the world and not react to them, but direct one's response
- 2:06and actions from an inner status of balance, harmony, peace and
- 2:13wideness. Sri Aurobindo has advised quote
- 2:18live within, be not shaken by outward happenings.
- 2:22End Quote. The Mother writes quote, the
- 2:27quieter you are, the stronger you become.
- 2:30The firm basis of all spiritual power is equanimity.
- 2:35End Quote. Srioro Bindo observes quote
- 2:40Quiet is a condition in which there is no restlessness or
- 2:44disturbance. Calm is a still, unmoved
- 2:49condition which no disturbance can affect.
- 2:53It is a less negative condition than quiet.
- 2:57Peace is a still, more positive condition.
- 3:01It carries with it the sense of settled and harmonious rest and
- 3:06deliverance. Silence is a state in which
- 3:10either there is no movement of the mind or vital, or else a
- 3:15great stillness which no surface movement can Pierce or alter.
