- 0:12Hello friends. It's shown here.
- 0:15It is the 12th of June, that's a Wednesday and you have invited
- 0:20me into your day. Thanks for doing that.
- 0:22Thank you for this opportunity that you and I can sit down
- 0:26together or whatever you are doing, whether you're walking,
- 0:29running, lying, driving, that we can come together and read
- 0:34another chapter of God's word. And ah, I hope you've been
- 0:37enjoying Ecclesiastes as much as I have.
- 0:40It is this big, old, confusing, deep, navel gazing book of the
- 0:47Bible that asks these colossal questions that often bobble
- 0:50around in our heads and we push it to the side because, well, we
- 0:53don't have time and space to deal with the questions this big
- 0:57normally. But here we are taking that
- 1:00time. And one of the things that's
- 1:02really stood out to me as we read it in the last couple of
- 1:05weeks is that talk around death, about realising our own
- 1:10mortality. As hard as death is for us, it
- 1:13really does sharpen the important things and bring them
- 1:17into focus. I have the privilege of working
- 1:21and leading A-Team who works in palliative care, and we spend
- 1:25time with people in that last chapter of their life.
- 1:28And I find that whenever I've spent time facing death, the
- 1:33death of others around me or supporting families through
- 1:36death, I'm always amazed how the trivial things seem to wash away
- 1:41and the big things, well, they get brought back into the
- 1:44limelight. And today we are going to talk
- 1:47more about death because that is what wise people do apparently.
- 1:51And so as we do this, this is a moment for us to put down the
- 1:57business of our hearts, put down the to do lists of our days, the
- 2:02beautiful view in front of us, the campiness of our chairs or
- 2:06the coal that's around us, or whatever it is that would draw
- 2:09our attention away. And just to bring our hearts
- 2:11open, open to the wisdom of our God that he would share with us.
- 2:16All right, friends, let's do it. Let us read together
- 2:19Ecclesiastes Chapter 9. This too I carefully explored.
- 2:35Even though the actions of godly and wise people are in God's
- 2:38hands, no one knows whether God will show them favour.
- 2:43The same destiny ultimately awaits everyone, whether
- 2:47righteous or wicked, good or bad, ceremonially clean or
- 2:51unclean, religious or irreligious.
- 2:54Good people receive the same treatment as sinners, and people
- 2:57that make promises to God are treated like people who don't.
- 3:02It seems so wrong that everyone under the sun suffers the same
- 3:06fate, already twisted by evil. People choose their own mad
- 3:12course, for they have no hope. There is nothing ahead but death
- 3:16anyway. There is hope only for the
- 3:19living. As they say, it's better to be
- 3:21alive dog than a dead lion. The living at least know they
- 3:26will die, but the dead know nothing.
- 3:30They have no further award, nor are they remembered whatever
- 3:34they did in their lifetime. Loving, hating, envying is all
- 3:41gone. They no longer play a part in
- 3:44anything here on Earth. So go ahead, eat your food with
- 3:48joy and drink your wine with a happy heart, for God approves of
- 3:53this. We're fine clothes, but a splash
- 3:57of Cologne. Live happily with the woman you
- 4:01love through all the meaningless days of life that God has given
- 4:04you under the sun. The wife God gives you is your
- 4:09reward for all your earthly toil.
- 4:12Whatever you do, do well, for when you go to the grave, there
- 4:17will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.
- 4:21I have observed everything else under the sun.
- 4:24The fastest runner doesn't always win the race, and the
- 4:28strongest warrior doesn't always win the battle.
- 4:32The wives sometimes go hungry, and the skillful are not
- 4:37necessarily wealthy, and those who are educated don't always
- 4:42lead successful lives. It is all decided by chance, by
- 4:47being in the right place at the right time.
- 4:51People can never predict when hard times might come.
- 4:55Like fish in a net or birds in a trap, people are caught by
- 4:59sudden tragedy. Here is another bit of wisdom
- 5:03that has impressed me as I have watched the way our world works.
- 5:07There was a small town with only a few people, and a great king
- 5:12came with his army and besieged it.
- 5:15A poor wise man knew how to save the town, and so it was rescued,
- 5:21but afterward no one thought to thank him.
- 5:25So even though wisdom is better than strength, those who are
- 5:28wise will be despised if they are poor.
- 5:32What they say will not be appreciated for long.
- 5:36Better to hear the quiet words of a wise person than the shouts
- 5:41of a foolish king. Better to have wisdom than
- 5:45weapons of war, but one Sinner can destroy much that is good.
- 6:01Our Lord, as we go through each day of our lives, what a
- 6:07blessing to us it is to be your children.
- 6:13To know that even though sometimes the big questions seem
- 6:16impossible to answer, we know that each day we are held in
- 6:21your loving hand. That you have not forsaken us to
- 6:26the coldness of the universe, destined to be alone and to die.
- 6:32But you have given us Jesus, You've given us your dear Son,
- 6:37so that we would know who you are, that we would understand
- 6:42your character, which is a character of love and
- 6:46forgiveness, ever drawing us back into your embrace.
- 6:52So each day as we take the steps that we need to to get through
- 6:55our days, just always remind us that no matter what it feels
- 7:00like to be living our days, we can always have that blessed
- 7:05assuredness that we are loved, that we are chosen.
- 7:10That we live in the warmth of your love, not the icy cold void
- 7:17of space of despair. Thank you help us to feel that
- 7:23warmth, for that to colour our days and our interactions with
- 7:27others, that we can represent your Kingdom of grace, love and
- 7:32presence. And thank you for Jesus.
- 7:35Thank you for all He taught us and that He saved us so that we
- 7:40can pray these prayers in His name.
- 7:43Oh man.
