- 0:22SPEAKER_00: History is filled with stories about authors who were rejected, but they kept on trying until they found success.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Here's just one example.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: A number of years ago, an aspiring author decided he wanted to write a book about the key decisions that determined personal success.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: However, he didn't want to write it in a traditional nonfiction book format.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Instead, he wanted to teach the concepts in the form of a story.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: So he spent a year writing the book and then submitted it to a publisher.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: The book was rejected, so he moved on to the next one.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Well, he was rejected again.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: The author tried a third and a fourth time, still more rejection.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Pretty soon he worked his way up to a dozen rejections, but still no dice.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Well, the author kept pushing forward, submitting the book to more and more publishers, and this went on for another dozen rejections, then another dozen and another dozen still.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: So after spending three and a half years and getting rejected by 51 publishers, he finally struck gold when Thomas Nelson Publishers gave him a green light for the book, and that book was the Traveler's Gift.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: The author is Andy Andrews, whose books have now sold over 3 million copies worldwide.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Andy Andrews tried 52 times before he got what he wanted.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: I want you to let that sink in for just a moment.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Now, this story might sound like kind of an extreme example, but stories of perseverance are common in the publishing world.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Even if you're self-publishing, you're going to face challenges, setbacks, and problems that require you to dig down deep and keep moving when things don't go your way.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: The historical novelist James Mishner once said, character consists of what you do on the third and fourth tries.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: There are a lot of writers with talent, but not all of them have the character and discipline to keep on going in the face of rejection.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Which leads us to the question, how about you?
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: What are you up against in your writing?
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Are you willing to be persistent?
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: And how many times are you willing to try?
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Because you may not have success on the third or fourth tries, it might just take 52.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge don't let rejection or discouragement stop you.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Keep going with your writing.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: You'll get there eventually.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and I'll see you tomorrow.
