- 2:50Speaker 1: the dribble, top of the arm against Chinou, try to
- 2:53Speaker 1: drive on her, goes into the paint on her, puts
- 2:56Speaker 1: it up, got the bucket in one great body control
- 2:59Speaker 1: by Matt Booker and drew the third foul as well
- 3:03Speaker 1: on Sera Chinu. Here's Booker top of the art for Texas,

- 3:10Speaker 1: Old eighty Acre still holding it, now drops it ag
- 3:12Speaker 1: into Booker. Madison behind an Old Acre. Stree knocks down

- 3:18Speaker 1: back in front thirty seven thirty six six something with
- 3:21Speaker 1: shot clock for Texas in down into Old Acre, sends
- 3:25Speaker 1: it to win in time of four seconds. Three. Harmon

- 3:30Speaker 1: winning China. It's the turnaround jumper. Rory knew exactly what
- 3:33Speaker 1: she was doing right. Yeah, we're gonna go with it
- 3:36Speaker 1: into the front court, repressed it, lops it in, Jones
- 3:39Speaker 1: puts it up, got the bucket in one very fini
- 3:42Speaker 1: controlled bant it off the glass for two and got

- 4:00Speaker 1: The game is tied at fifty eight hunder two minutes

- 4:41Speaker 2: So here we go.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Scott the inbound right in front of the ole miss
- 4:44Speaker 1: Bench looking still looking, lomps it high in the air.
- 4:48Speaker 1: It's picked off by Booker and then we'll do it Madison.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Booker comes home to Mississippi, knocks down a key, Jumper
- 4:57Speaker 1: comes up with a steel and the law warn get
- 5:00Speaker 1: out of Oxford with their twentieth win of the season
- 5:04Speaker 1: and their sixth sec win of the year. Well two
- 5:12Speaker 1: thrilling finishes for the Texas men's and women's basketball teams.
- 5:16Speaker 1: They both come out of it with wins, one at home,
- 5:19Speaker 1: one on the road, and now will flip flop those
- 5:21Speaker 1: designations this week. Good afternoon, everybody, Welcome to a Monday.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Welcome to the program here. I'm thirteen under the Zone.
- 5:29Speaker 1: My name is Craig Way. Glad to have you with
- 5:30Speaker 1: us this afternoon. Pleased as always with us to include
- 5:37Speaker 1: Cameron D. Parker, the producer the Eon. The birth certificate
- 5:40Speaker 1: stands for Dallas, which made some news, made it official
- 5:44Speaker 1: over the weekend, and the Cowboys did hire and promote
- 5:50Speaker 1: Brian Schottenheimer to head coach, to which the long time,
- 5:54Speaker 1: long suffering, disenfranchised, angry Cowboy, he's fan, Cameron Parker says me,
- 6:05Speaker 1: that's your cue.
- 6:07Speaker 3: I'm still focused on Texas being four and O why
- 6:09Speaker 3: we got to top of the Cowboys. We have to
- 6:12Speaker 3: know this week in basketball two point comeback.
- 6:16Speaker 1: We're gonna get to all of that. Don't worry, but
- 6:18Speaker 1: I just you know, just the initial response, because we're
- 6:21Speaker 1: gonna we're gonna play you diligently spent time editing uh
- 6:25Speaker 1: the news conference with Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones. Stephen was
- 6:31Speaker 1: there right we didn't hear from him much.
- 6:32Speaker 3: I think he whenever Jerry gave him permission.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Okay talk, you know, yeah, Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones and
- 6:39Speaker 1: Brian Schottenheimer. We're gonna hear that coming up, so we'll
- 6:43Speaker 1: so we'll have that. But as Cameron pointed out, two
- 6:49Speaker 1: tremendous ball games uh during the week for the long
- 6:53Speaker 1: warn men and for and really truly Cam it was
- 6:56Speaker 1: a five and oh week because the Texas women played
- 6:59Speaker 1: three games in six days. It was a week ago today.
- 7:02Speaker 1: They wanted Newark over then a thran Maryland. They follow
- 7:05Speaker 1: that up with a home win on Thursday night over
- 7:08Speaker 1: seventeenth ranking Tennessee, and then yesterday. It's a really good
- 7:11Speaker 1: Ole Miss team that had been ranked most of the season,
- 7:14Speaker 1: the most recently dropped out of the pole, but still
- 7:16Speaker 1: a tough team and they were in a grind the
- 7:19Speaker 1: whole way. They never led by more than three points,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and you know, entrailed by as many as eight with
- 7:28Speaker 1: six minutes to go in the game, but fought back.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Madison Booker and her homecoming hit a huge shot as
- 7:34Speaker 1: you heard there in the highlight montage, and then the
- 7:38Speaker 1: intercepted the inbounds pass to close out the game. The
- 7:41Speaker 1: long Horns also got a monster effort out of Taylor
- 7:44Speaker 1: Jones with twenty four points and eight rebounds. He played really,
- 7:47Speaker 1: really well. And then there's the Long Worn Men. After
- 7:50Speaker 1: the win on Tuesday and a home over a then
- 7:54Speaker 1: twenty second rate Missouri team, they come back and they
- 7:58Speaker 1: played Texas A and M, a team that had eating
- 8:00Speaker 1: the Long Horns by twenty in College Station three weeks prior,
- 8:03Speaker 1: and the Aggis looked like they picked up right where
- 8:05Speaker 1: they left off. They were red hot shooting from outside
- 8:08Speaker 1: in the first half, built an eighteen point a half
- 8:10Speaker 1: time lead. The lead grew to as much as twenty
- 8:14Speaker 1: two points for the Aggies. Was seventeen minutes to go
- 8:17Speaker 1: win the game. Loghorns went on a big push largely
- 8:22Speaker 1: carried by Trey Johnson, cut it down to six and
- 8:28Speaker 1: had a chance at fifty six to fifty and had
- 8:30Speaker 1: a chance to get it below that couldn't do it.
- 8:33Speaker 1: A and M quickly responded with a NATO run, went
- 8:35Speaker 1: back up by fourteen with just over six minutes remaining
- 8:39Speaker 1: in the ballgame. But again Loghorns kind of dug in
- 8:44Speaker 1: Trey Johnson with some big shots. They got some big
- 8:48Speaker 1: rebounds and some stops down the stretch ed there was
- 8:51Speaker 1: a crucial technical foul called against Texas A and M.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Somebody asked me if I'd ever seen that kind of
- 9:03Speaker 1: technical six players on the floor at one time. I have,
- 9:08Speaker 1: but it's been a long time ago, long time ago,
- 9:13Speaker 1: and I've seen it happen once or twice in high
- 9:15Speaker 1: school basketball, and it usually happened the way that it
- 9:17Speaker 1: happened to Texas A and M kind of liked with hockey,
- 9:20Speaker 1: almost like a line change thing with too many men
- 9:23Speaker 1: on the ice, and they were coming out of a
- 9:25Speaker 1: timeout and just left one player too many on the floor.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I don't know if Wade Taylor was supposed to check
- 9:31Speaker 1: out or if he noticed there were six on four
- 9:34Speaker 1: and he tried to get off the floor, but it
- 9:37Speaker 1: had already been inbounded, and so they were called for
- 9:39Speaker 1: that tray. Johnson hits two technical free throws that cut
- 9:44Speaker 1: it back from twelve to ten, and then he hit
- 9:48Speaker 1: a three to cut it to seven. That turred, and
- 9:50Speaker 1: then they just kept chipping away and Johnson hit a
- 9:53Speaker 1: three to get it down to a one point game,
- 9:55Speaker 1: and then brought the ball down the floor. Julian Larry
- 9:58Speaker 1: with a great block of a way Taylor shot, they
- 10:02Speaker 1: got the basketball back. Rodney Terry used his final timeouts
- 10:05Speaker 1: set up the play, as artist said afterwards, and we'll
- 10:09Speaker 1: hear him talk about it here in a few minutes
- 10:11Speaker 1: as well. It was actually designed to go to Trey Johnson,
- 10:14Speaker 1: but Trey recognize him. The double team that was coming
- 10:16Speaker 1: to him was able to get it out onto the
- 10:18Speaker 1: wing and Tremon Mark had that whole left side of
- 10:22Speaker 1: the basket to drive down, and of course he is
- 10:24Speaker 1: a left team was able to use the glass to
- 10:26Speaker 1: lay it high out the glass in for the bucket
- 10:28Speaker 1: to put Texas up seventy sixty nine. There was three
- 10:31Speaker 1: point seven A go Texas. A and M chose not
- 10:33Speaker 1: to use one of its two remaining timeouts. They sped
- 10:36Speaker 1: the ball down the floor, but still Waye Taylor was
- 10:39Speaker 1: forced to launch about a forty footer and it was closed.
- 10:42Speaker 1: It hit the rim on the backboard, he did not
- 10:44Speaker 1: go in, and Texas got to win a huge win,
- 10:47Speaker 1: back to back wins of A ranked opponents. Now they
- 10:50Speaker 1: have to go on the road and play speaking of
- 10:51Speaker 1: angry and angry on miss team that's dropped three in
- 10:53Speaker 1: a row, so they've got to go to Oxford, Mississippi.
- 10:56Speaker 1: That will be on Wednesday night. So those are some
- 10:59Speaker 1: of the things we're talking about. Obviously, we're going to
- 11:02Speaker 1: get in to talk about your two teams left for
- 11:04Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. Whether you like it or not. You
- 11:07Speaker 1: got Eagles chiefs, and I know a lot of the
- 11:10Speaker 1: country is not happy with that, the people who have
- 11:15Speaker 1: that success, weariness of Kansas City. But Cowboy fans could
- 11:21Speaker 1: never bring themselves to root for the Eagles. Have I
- 11:24Speaker 1: right about that?
- 11:25Speaker 2: Cam?
- 11:25Speaker 1: You could?
- 11:26Speaker 3: Yeah, there's no chance.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what I thought. What if Washington had won
- 11:29Speaker 1: and played Kansas City? What would you have done that?
- 11:32Speaker 3: You know, I Casey would would have would win that game, obviously,
- 11:36Speaker 3: unless but who would you have rooted for? I would
- 11:38Speaker 3: if Washington won, I would have been okay with it,
- 11:40Speaker 3: just for Dan Quinn, Yeah, and Sam cos Me. But
- 11:43Speaker 3: a lot of the other ex Cowboy, ex Cowboy players
- 11:46Speaker 3: really stick it to Jerry Eagles, no way, Like I
- 11:49Speaker 3: don't care Kellen Moore's on the staff, I don't, Sorry,
- 11:51Speaker 3: Maro Jimo, There's just no way I can root for
- 11:55Speaker 3: that disgusting city and that disgusting fan base.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Well that's how I was last year with the forty
- 12:01Speaker 1: nine ers playing the Chiefs. It's not I'm not anti Chiefs,
- 12:06Speaker 1: and I'm not a big fan either. They're a different
- 12:09Speaker 1: NFL team than the one I root for. But there's
- 12:12Speaker 1: no way I could bring myself to route for the
- 12:15Speaker 1: Rams arch rivals. There's just no way. I would never
- 12:18Speaker 1: be able to do that. So I understand that, all right.
- 12:21Speaker 1: So we're gonna recap those games. We'll look at those.
- 12:26Speaker 1: We're gonna hear from Rodney Terry, We're gonna hear from
- 12:28Speaker 1: Trey Johnson. Vick Schaeffer, the Texas women's head coach, is
- 12:31Speaker 1: gonna join us live in the four o'clock hour, so
- 12:34Speaker 1: we'll visit with Vic to talk about his team's grind
- 12:37Speaker 1: of winning three games in six days. And they got
- 12:41Speaker 1: a much deserved day off today, the players did before
- 12:44Speaker 1: they begin their preparations for Thursday night's matchup with Missouri.
- 12:48Speaker 1: So we'll get to all that and more. Obviously, we
- 12:50Speaker 1: have the text line if you want to Texas, you
- 12:52Speaker 1: text the word Texas follow by your question or comment
- 12:55Speaker 1: to eight one five three zero. That's the word Texas,
- 12:59Speaker 1: follow by your usher comment to eight one five three zero.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Standard messaging and data rates may apply. We do have
- 13:05Speaker 1: inconceivable this afternoon as well. We'll get to all that
- 13:08Speaker 1: and more when we continue here on AM thirteen Under
- 13:10Speaker 1: the Zone.
- 13:18Speaker 4: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 13:21Speaker 4: Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster Craig Way.
- 13:31Speaker 1: We're pleased to be with you on a Monday. A
- 13:37Speaker 1: Monday that shows the temperature to be fifty one degrees,
- 13:42Speaker 1: but it says feels like forty four outside. He does
- 13:45Speaker 1: feel kind of dank and chilly with some windy conditions.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Going to be like that all the way till like Friday.
- 13:52Speaker 1: In fact, Wednesday and Thursday, good chance we're going to
- 13:54Speaker 1: have rain in this area. So we are at the
- 13:59Speaker 1: end of jan Anyuary.
- 14:00Speaker 3: So one more month of cold weather and then you know,
- 14:04Speaker 3: by March it'll you know, it'll be cold in the morning,
- 14:06Speaker 3: but you know it'll progressively get warmer throughout the day
- 14:09Speaker 3: and next thing you know, it would be one hundred
- 14:10Speaker 3: and five and we'll be complaining about that, so.
- 14:15Speaker 1: You know it would be worse. I listen, I don't
- 14:18Speaker 1: know how you feel about it, but you know you
- 14:20Speaker 1: and I are vote from the state of North Carolina,
- 14:22Speaker 1: and at this time of year in North Carolina, what
- 14:28Speaker 1: we usually get, certainly when I was growing up, what
- 14:30Speaker 1: we always seem to be getting was what we've got here,
- 14:33Speaker 1: except more rain, even just like really cold, almost freezing drizzle.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I hated that. I hated that, And so when I
- 14:46Speaker 1: first came out to Texas, I was fine with one
- 14:49Speaker 1: hundred degrees.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't.
- 14:52Speaker 3: I just didn't want I wanted no rain for several years.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Now, Eventually, especially as I became a homeowner, you learn
- 15:03Speaker 1: to appreciate three.
- 15:05Speaker 3: But it was like that going up.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I just I just hated those conditions all the time.
- 15:10Speaker 3: What I disliked the most about the North Carolina summers
- 15:13Speaker 3: was just how humid it was. But it's been humid
- 15:17Speaker 3: here yep, the last couple of summers too, so I
- 15:20Speaker 3: haven't gotten too far away from it. I'm okay with
- 15:22Speaker 3: dry heat. I don't know about you, Craig. Dry heat,
- 15:24Speaker 3: I'm fine with, yep, but it's too humidity that I
- 15:27Speaker 3: just I can't. That's why I can't live in Florida,
- 15:30Speaker 3: because I've gone and visited my mother in August, and Florida, man,
- 15:34Speaker 3: you are, It's like you just came out of the ocean.
- 15:36Speaker 3: You're just dripping sweat and it's eight o'clock in the morning.
- 15:38Speaker 3: You ever hang out in Houston in July and August,
- 15:42Speaker 3: that's not a lot of funny. It's just there in
- 15:45Speaker 3: deep East Texas, he can get really, really humid. Yeah,
- 15:47Speaker 3: I'm right, yeah, I'm right there with the North Carolina
- 15:50Speaker 3: would get like that in the summer. My dad used
- 15:53Speaker 3: to say how he hated to just walk outside and
- 15:55Speaker 3: it would start beating up on him immediately.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Sweat, your shirt gets steaky. Yeah, so it gets hot. Now,
- 16:02Speaker 1: hot is hot, and the drier heat is better. But
- 16:08Speaker 1: you know, you go out to Las Vegas, it's one
- 16:10Speaker 1: hundred and eleven, it's you know, it's hot. It's like
- 16:14Speaker 1: an oven. It's pretty hot out there. But anyway, it
- 16:17Speaker 1: could be more certainly than where we are right now,
- 16:19Speaker 1: and we'll take what we have. It was like this,
- 16:21Speaker 1: by the way, in Oxford, Mississippi, yesterday too. It was
- 16:24Speaker 1: kind of dank and dreary in the forties, and I
- 16:27Speaker 1: had to drive a rental car back to Tupolo because
- 16:30Speaker 1: that's where the team charter was flying home. I flew
- 16:32Speaker 1: into Memphis late Saturday night, after of course the Texas
- 16:37Speaker 1: Texas A and M game, and we got off the
- 16:40Speaker 1: air and my wife Linda met up with me and
- 16:44Speaker 1: we ran down and grabbed it. Since it was near
- 16:47Speaker 1: the airport, I had to drop off my vehicle at
- 16:49Speaker 1: the charter terminal and then we went by and since
- 16:51Speaker 1: it was near the airport, we went by Dan's and
- 16:54Speaker 1: grabbed a burger and then went back over to the
- 16:57Speaker 1: airport and she dropped me off and I flew up
- 17:00Speaker 1: and I barely made the connecting flight. I say barely.
- 17:05Speaker 1: The flight that was landing in the DFW all of
- 17:09Speaker 1: a sudden pulled up and the pilot comes on say, sorry, folks,
- 17:16Speaker 1: we just had to execute what we call a go around.
- 17:22Speaker 1: We were air traffic thought we were a little too
- 17:25Speaker 1: close to the plane that was in front of us landing,
- 17:27Speaker 1: so we're a go around. Beautiful to go back around,
- 17:31Speaker 1: and then we land. So now it's gonna be a
- 17:32Speaker 1: really tight connection. And there's a dude behind me that's
- 17:36Speaker 1: making a very tight connection as well, to the extent
- 17:40Speaker 1: that he starts almost shouting at the top of his
- 17:44Speaker 1: lungs when we're in the out. If you don't have
- 17:46Speaker 1: a connection, can you sit down like can you let
- 17:48Speaker 1: us buy please? Can you let us buy please? Nobody
- 17:52Speaker 1: paid any attention to him. Of course, you know, he
- 17:54Speaker 1: goes all you people have connections.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Huh.
- 17:58Speaker 1: It's like, dude, relax, Okay, you're either gonna make it
- 18:00Speaker 1: or you not. Yep, and I start racing to the
- 18:03Speaker 1: gate at the cadecting fight fortunately was in the same terminal,
- 18:08Speaker 1: and then mine got pushed back. Actually they were waiting
- 18:12Speaker 1: on a crew arrival. So I made it all that
- 18:14Speaker 1: land in Memphis late Saturday night for people always want
- 18:16Speaker 1: asking me about my travelog and picked up a rental
- 18:19Speaker 1: car and drove it down to Oxford's, about an hour
- 18:21Speaker 1: and fifteen minutes south of there. Got there late late
- 18:24Speaker 1: Saturday night, turn around, got up real early Sunday morning
- 18:27Speaker 1: to go with the team over the shoot around. They
- 18:28Speaker 1: had an eight am shoot around seven forty five am
- 18:32Speaker 1: departure for shoot around to set up the equipment and
- 18:34Speaker 1: stuff and back though telling them to go over and
- 18:36Speaker 1: have the game. The game was. It was quite the game,
- 18:38Speaker 1: and Texas really got pushed, but they won and they're
- 18:42Speaker 1: now twenty and two, so they've done a good job.
- 18:44Speaker 1: So of the men in trying to turn their fortunes
- 18:47Speaker 1: around back to back wins of a ranked upon. Somebody
- 18:49Speaker 1: on the text line said, I didn't have any expectations
- 18:53Speaker 1: of zaric on Yema at the beginning of the season,
- 18:55Speaker 1: but he has been a great surprise of late. His
- 18:59Speaker 1: development is very renoticeable. It's a good take he has.
- 19:02Speaker 1: He's worked very hard on his game. The coaches worked
- 19:05Speaker 1: very hard on him, especially when they are shorthanded. Remember
- 19:10Speaker 1: the Loghorns won that game Saturday against the number one
- 19:14Speaker 1: rebounding team in the nation, Texas A and M, and
- 19:18Speaker 1: the log Horns did it without their number one rebounder
- 19:21Speaker 1: who was not available Arthur Kaluma at Swornee could not
- 19:26Speaker 1: play the second leading scorer and leading rebounder, and for
- 19:28Speaker 1: them to be able to pull that off was pretty impressive.
- 19:31Speaker 1: They got clutch shots from Trey Johnson clearly, the big
- 19:35Speaker 1: clear out and the drive to the bucket from Tremont Mark.
- 19:39Speaker 1: So all of that was part of the conversation that
- 19:42Speaker 1: Eddie Orn and I had after the game. The long
- 19:44Speaker 1: Horns head coach Rodney Terry. Everybody just keeps saying wow
- 19:47Speaker 1: because of the spirit, the drive, the hard work and
- 19:50Speaker 1: the hustle and the guts and great and determination your
- 19:53Speaker 1: basketball team showed and pulling off his comeback to the.
- 19:55Speaker 5: Really part of my guys in terms of you know
- 19:57Speaker 5: what some guys shoting some guys at halftime, you know,
- 20:00Speaker 5: and you know that was true Texas fight right there,
- 20:03Speaker 5: Texas basketball, the grit you have to play with, how
- 20:05Speaker 5: tough you have to play, and get my guys a
- 20:08Speaker 5: lot of credit for just coming out and watching the
- 20:10Speaker 5: game for twenty minutes in the second half and you
- 20:13Speaker 5: know at the at the end of the day wanted
- 20:14Speaker 5: it a little bit more than they did it. Then
- 20:16Speaker 5: in terms of doing what you have to do and
- 20:17Speaker 5: win the game, and again shout out to our students.
- 20:20Speaker 5: Our students will us to another really good win. And
- 20:23Speaker 5: this crowd, this energy on one nation was great today.
- 20:26Speaker 5: We needed every bit of them.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Let me get your thoughts on a couple of sequences
- 20:30Speaker 1: in the game. First, when you're down twenty two at
- 20:32Speaker 1: fifty one, twenty nine, seventeen minutes to go, what you
- 20:35Speaker 1: said to them there, and then after you'd cut it
- 20:38Speaker 1: to six, they push you back out to fourteen. At
- 20:39Speaker 1: sixty four fifty with six and a half minutes to go,
- 20:42Speaker 1: you say twenty two twenty two. It was fifty one
- 20:46Speaker 1: to twenty nine with seventeen minutes to go. I'll be
- 20:48Speaker 1: with eighteen twenty two. Man, I'll tell you what. You
- 20:51Speaker 1: know what I just told our guys.
- 20:52Speaker 5: You know, hey, you know what you know We're not
- 20:55Speaker 5: gonna do now twenty one or eighteen point play work
- 21:00Speaker 5: this game possession by possession.
- 21:01Speaker 3: We've got to put some stops together.
- 21:03Speaker 5: We know these guys, they know us.
- 21:06Speaker 1: We've got to come down and we got to execute
- 21:08Speaker 1: this caut on the board right now.
- 21:09Speaker 5: We do that, we'll put ourselves in position to get.
- 21:11Speaker 1: This done today. Well, tell us exactly what was talked
- 21:14Speaker 1: about in the time out setting up the play for
- 21:17Speaker 1: Tremont to get the drive.
- 21:18Speaker 2: To the bucket.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Well, we wanted the last shot. We didn't want to
- 21:20Speaker 5: give them the last shot. We wanted to play to win.
- 21:23Speaker 5: And you know, Trey had been a guy that we
- 21:26Speaker 5: rolled down the stretch there quite a bit. We were
- 21:29Speaker 5: gonna go to the open set, We're gonna go in
- 21:31Speaker 5: about eight seconds.
- 21:32Speaker 3: We were gonna try to go and make a play.
- 21:34Speaker 5: And you know, if Trey couldn't make a play, he
- 21:36Speaker 5: had to trust the teammate, and I thought he did
- 21:39Speaker 5: We went a little earlier than we wanted to go
- 21:41Speaker 5: and everything, but at the end of the day, we
- 21:44Speaker 5: ended up with the matchup that was pretty good. Was
- 21:46Speaker 5: wade on on on t bark into the baskets.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Pretty good. We'll take that match up all day. And
- 21:51Speaker 1: important for you guys not to file an A and
- 21:53Speaker 1: M in boundary with three point seven quickly without calling
- 21:55Speaker 1: the time out.
- 21:56Speaker 5: No, absolutely way he gets the ball. We got to
- 21:58Speaker 5: shadow up the floor, make it difficult shot for him.
- 22:01Speaker 5: He was the guy that was making shot for those
- 22:02Speaker 5: guys down the stretch.
- 22:04Speaker 1: What the hell of am win? Rightny?
- 22:08Speaker 3: Talk about two things. I know it's the last ten
- 22:10Speaker 3: seconds of your possessions.
- 22:11Speaker 6: I thought your defense stayed in front of the ball
- 22:13Speaker 6: and the main thing you didn't found put them on
- 22:15Speaker 6: the line.
- 22:16Speaker 3: They did not go to the line today.
- 22:17Speaker 2: That was huge.
- 22:18Speaker 5: Wort's the team we were trying to do. We know
- 22:19Speaker 5: they try to get the ball up on the glass.
- 22:21Speaker 5: We had to try to protect the glass. You know,
- 22:23Speaker 5: they got a couple of second chance opportunities. Stick backs
- 22:27Speaker 5: just needed to block out and keep them off the glass.
- 22:29Speaker 5: That was a big part of their offense.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I asked Trey, what the feeling is like when he
- 22:35Speaker 1: knows his teammates want to get him the ball, the
- 22:37Speaker 1: responsibility that falls on a freshman's shoulders. But he said,
- 22:41Speaker 1: just trying to help my team. Well, he's not a
- 22:42Speaker 1: freshman anymore.
- 22:43Speaker 5: We played twenty games now, we played two exhibition games.
- 22:47Speaker 5: He's twenty two games in now, he's the minutes he's
- 22:50Speaker 5: played in loss.
- 22:50Speaker 3: He's a sophomore right now already.
- 22:52Speaker 1: So you know, he's grown up.
- 22:54Speaker 5: What a bit, you know, obviously gaining experience every day,
- 22:57Speaker 5: but he's gained a lot of experience at a point
- 22:59Speaker 5: right now to where this team is trusting to make
- 23:01Speaker 5: big plays in big shots, force.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Back to back wins of a ranked opponents. You're gonna
- 23:04Speaker 1: face another one when you go on the road. But
- 23:06Speaker 1: it's nice to build on this, isn't it.
- 23:07Speaker 5: Oh yeah, this game for one night, you know, on
- 23:10Speaker 5: it's own to the next great challenge in this league
- 23:12Speaker 5: is the best league in college basketball. Now we've got
- 23:15Speaker 5: to go on to role play a well coach team.
- 23:17Speaker 5: Coach beers teams on well coached. They gonna they're gonna
- 23:20Speaker 5: know everything that we do. We're gonna try to know
- 23:21Speaker 5: everything that they do, and good defensive team, and they've
- 23:25Speaker 5: got older players, They've got a good team.
- 23:26Speaker 3: So it's gonna be a big challenge for us over.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Ox next week. Yeah, no question about and that it's
- 23:32Speaker 1: coming up on Wednesday night. They're in Oxford, Mississippi, And
- 23:36Speaker 1: we'll have moren that obviously in the coming days, and
- 23:39Speaker 1: Cam and I'll be headed over there tomorrow with the
- 23:41Speaker 1: long run men for the game on Wednesday. All right,
- 23:44Speaker 1: Later on we're gonna hear from Trey Johnson about this
- 23:48Speaker 1: Texas victory. We'll take a closer look at the Texas
- 23:51Speaker 1: women's when we have a visit coming up with Vick
- 23:55Speaker 1: Schaeffer and the four o'clock. I will do that plenty
- 23:58Speaker 1: to talk about with the NFL and the super Bowl
- 24:00Speaker 1: and the Cowboys as well. But Inconceivable is up next
- 24:03Speaker 1: here on EM thirteen under the Zone Craig Way joined
- 24:06Speaker 1: by the producer Cameron Parker. What is what beverages that
- 24:10Speaker 1: you're consuming? I'm just a energy drink? What is that?
- 24:13Speaker 5: Is that?
- 24:14Speaker 1: So that's an energy drink?
- 24:15Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I think it's a little bit better than
- 24:18Speaker 3: drinking Red Bull, But I don't know probably, you know,
- 24:21Speaker 3: I'm sure there's gonna be an inconceivable story about how
- 24:23Speaker 3: I'm gonna die ten years younger, ten years younger.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I haven't noticed anything like that, all right, Yeah, Okay,
- 24:35Speaker 1: the year is young. So we're underway. An hour number
- 24:39Speaker 1: two coming up in a few minutes, we're gonna hear.
- 24:42Speaker 1: You're gonna hear from Jerry. You're gonna hear from Jerry Jones.
- 24:45Speaker 1: You're gonna hear a little bit anyway, did a little
- 24:48Speaker 1: bit from Stephen Jones and from Brian Schottenheimer, the cowboys
- 24:52Speaker 1: new head coach. Will bring those comments to you from
- 24:54Speaker 1: a press conference earlier so today, so you'll you'll hear
- 24:58Speaker 1: some of that. Also, later this hour, you'll hear from
- 25:01Speaker 1: Trey Johnson, Longhorn's freshman guard who scored career high thirty
- 25:07Speaker 1: in the win over Texas A and M. That's still
- 25:09Speaker 1: to come this hour. Next hour. Vic Schaffer joins us
- 25:11Speaker 1: live as the Longhorn's head coach will join us in
- 25:14Speaker 1: the four o'clock hour to talk about their win. Pushed
- 25:18Speaker 1: to the limit by a good old Miss team yesterday
- 25:21Speaker 1: and they did manage to come through with a win.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Never led by more than three, trailed by as many
- 25:27Speaker 1: as eight, including with about six minutes to go, but
- 25:29Speaker 1: just pushed back, found a way to break through and
- 25:32Speaker 1: get the win. And it was a good crowd. Yesterday
- 25:36Speaker 1: they had the fiftieth anniversary. I think it was celebration
- 25:43Speaker 1: or at least as celebration of the history of ole
- 25:47Speaker 1: Miss women's basketball, and it was cool. They had a
- 25:50Speaker 1: lot of pretty famous players and coaches. Their Van Chancellor,
- 25:55Speaker 1: of course, the legendary head coach there. It was a
- 25:58Speaker 1: coach of the Houston comments at the outset of the
- 26:02Speaker 1: WNBA when they won those four straight titles. Also included
- 26:07Speaker 1: in that group Carol Ross, who had coached there got
- 26:11Speaker 1: him to an elite aid that coached at Florida. Carol
- 26:13Speaker 1: was here in town when GAYL Gueston Course was the
- 26:17Speaker 1: head coach at Texas and Gail was there as well.
- 26:20Speaker 1: It was great to see Gail and great to see Carol.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And Carol was my radio analyst on Texas women's games
- 26:26Speaker 1: for the time that Gail was the head coach, and
- 26:30Speaker 1: so we were chatting up some old times. It was
- 26:32Speaker 1: good to see them, and it was also good to
- 26:33Speaker 1: see a lifetime log horn Empress Davenport, who played who
- 26:36Speaker 1: was recruited to Texas by Gail Gueston Course, and then
- 26:41Speaker 1: after Gaile left, she played for Karen astron Aston Empress
- 26:45Speaker 1: is from Duncanville, playing on the state championship. I'd done
- 26:48Speaker 1: her state championship game on television. It was great to
- 26:51Speaker 1: see her. She was a tough, gritty guard for Texas
- 26:55Speaker 1: and is now on the coaching staff, and so it
- 27:01Speaker 1: was it was. It was good to see all of
- 27:03Speaker 1: them yesterday and good for Texas get out of there
- 27:05Speaker 1: with a wind. That's a nice arena came. You'll see
- 27:08Speaker 1: that on Wednesday when we're over there. The pavilion, I
- 27:11Speaker 1: think it's the Sandy and John Black Pavilion.
- 27:15Speaker 3: S JB as they call it.
- 27:16Speaker 1: I noticed, yeah, and and the and and the old
- 27:19Speaker 1: arena is still there, like a few hundred yards away.
- 27:24Speaker 1: It was called the was it tad I forgot what
- 27:29Speaker 1: they called it, the Tad pad uh and Uh Tad
- 27:35Speaker 1: Smiths Tad Smith Coliseum. And I'd done a game there
- 27:38Speaker 1: when Texas played there, I think in two thousand and eight,
- 27:40Speaker 1: when Gael Guest of course was the coach. They played there.
- 27:42Speaker 1: It was an arena kind of like the old Daniel
- 27:47Speaker 1: Meyer Coliseum in Fort Worreth. If you've ever been to
- 27:49Speaker 1: what is now known as fant Ewing. It was Ewing
- 27:52Speaker 1: Coliseum in Monroe, Louisiana, where Uel Monroe plays. I'm told
- 27:57Speaker 1: I think the arena at Southern Miss is like this.
- 28:00Speaker 1: It's just that oval kind of arena comes down to
- 28:03Speaker 1: a railing and there's some space before the floor, and
- 28:06Speaker 1: that's how that the old arena was. This one is
- 28:09Speaker 1: built much more and it's been around for a while,
- 28:11Speaker 1: but for several years, at least ten years, I think.
- 28:15Speaker 1: But it's nice the way they've built. It's pretty steep
- 28:18Speaker 1: going up and it's got phan amenities and stuff like that.
- 28:21Speaker 1: And that's where the Texas men will be on Wednesday
- 28:25Speaker 1: to play the old miss Rebels coach by Chris Beard.
- 28:28Speaker 1: And they've been stumbling of late. Got off to a
- 28:32Speaker 1: great start, but they've now dropped three in a row.
- 28:35Speaker 1: They lost that tough game a week ago Saturday in
- 28:38Speaker 1: overtime at Southern Miss. I mean, excuse you. Mississippi State
- 28:43Speaker 1: then lost that game that they pretty much had in
- 28:45Speaker 1: the pocket against Texas A and M last Wednesday, and
- 28:48Speaker 1: Gaggi's found a way to win that, and then they
- 28:50Speaker 1: went to Missouri and lost to the Tigers. Tigers coming
- 28:52Speaker 1: off the lost of Texas. Of course A and M
- 28:55Speaker 1: coming off that stealing one in Oxford when had one,
- 28:59Speaker 1: as they would say, stole and from them as Texas
- 29:01Speaker 1: was able to come up with the wins. So the
- 29:02Speaker 1: long Ones had back to back wins of A ranked opponents.
- 29:06Speaker 1: And that's pretty cool.
- 29:07Speaker 3: Have you heard or did you hear anything from Ole
- 29:11Speaker 3: Miss people about Wednesday's game? Anything special? When I visited
- 29:15Speaker 3: with Tom Hart and is it Dane Brown, Dane Bradshaw, Bradshaw,
- 29:20Speaker 3: the two guys who work in the telecastside, they were
- 29:23Speaker 3: talking about how they were telling O Miss students at
- 29:26Speaker 3: the A and M game that if you attend three
- 29:30Speaker 3: home games, you will have first priority for the fourth game.
- 29:34Speaker 3: And I believe the fourth game is Texas Old Miss.
- 29:37Speaker 3: They're trying to I guess you know, they know it's
- 29:40Speaker 3: a big game, but I'm curious. Did you hear anything
- 29:42Speaker 3: during your time in Oxford yesterday?
- 29:43Speaker 1: I just saw the promotional announcements on the overhead scoreboard.
- 29:46Speaker 1: And as we know quite often, and in the case
- 29:50Speaker 1: of the University of Texas, it supplies as well. The
- 29:54Speaker 1: fan bases are different and it's more of an alumni
- 29:58Speaker 1: based crowd and older out there at Oxford and families
- 30:03Speaker 1: with a lot of kids. Same story in Austin. You know,
- 30:07Speaker 1: the students have started to turn out well, but the
- 30:09Speaker 1: corral was not in play in force for the women's
- 30:13Speaker 1: games the way it is for the men's games. You
- 30:15Speaker 1: have some season ticket older sitting in there.
- 30:17Speaker 3: So does they have a name for the student section
- 30:19Speaker 3: like like Bear did with the crow in Austin.
- 30:22Speaker 1: I did not hear that, and their students were basically
- 30:27Speaker 1: on the baselines there.
- 30:28Speaker 3: But that may not There's a good chance that may
- 30:30Speaker 3: not be the case.
- 30:33Speaker 1: When the Long Warns play there on Wednesday, we'll find out, certainly,
- 30:36Speaker 1: since we'll be out there to call it. But it's
- 30:40Speaker 1: a nice building. It's a good arena, it really is.
- 30:43Speaker 1: A lot of their facilities are very nice. Football stadium's undergone,
- 30:46Speaker 1: a lot of renovation has been nice, and the baseball
- 30:51Speaker 1: park has been cool. Texas, of course, won a Super
- 30:55Speaker 1: Regional there in two thousand and five. Texas does not
- 30:58Speaker 1: play Old Miss in conference play this year. It's odd
- 31:01Speaker 1: that they do play them in a game that will
- 31:03Speaker 1: be a non conference game in Arlington and Globalife Field.
- 31:07Speaker 1: It will be their second game of the season. Long
- 31:09Speaker 1: Worn baseball will coming up, and so that'll be the
- 31:14Speaker 1: second game of the season, but it won't count as
- 31:20Speaker 1: a conference game on that and they don't have Ole
- 31:22Speaker 1: Miss in the rotation on the conference series this year.
- 31:25Speaker 1: They do open SEC play at Mississippi State at Duty Noblefield,
- 31:31Speaker 1: and that's going to be quite that. They have to
- 31:33Speaker 1: go to Starkville, Fayetteville, Lexington. They have A and M
- 31:44Speaker 1: at home. They have Florida at home. They have Georgia
- 31:48Speaker 1: at home. I don't think they play their Alabama or
- 31:54Speaker 1: Auburn off the top of my head, trying to remember that.
- 31:58Speaker 1: And they don't play South Carolina, so anyway, those are
- 32:01Speaker 1: you know. So they have LSU at home, I know that,
- 32:05Speaker 1: so anyway, and they don't play Tennessee, the defending national
- 32:08Speaker 1: champions So that's you know, for long worn baseball. That's
- 32:14Speaker 1: what's what's coming up. But they don't play Ole Miss
- 32:17Speaker 1: except that one, the one off the non conference game
- 32:20Speaker 1: in Arlington, Okay, NFC and AFC championship games. You had
- 32:25Speaker 1: it all and you were kind of watching while you
- 32:27Speaker 1: were you know, supplying your services as our studio anchor
- 32:31Speaker 1: and broadcast coordinator for the women's game yesterday. So I
- 32:35Speaker 1: don't think anybody was really really surprised by what happened
- 32:39Speaker 1: in Philadelphia at the Eagles taking down the Commanders.
- 32:42Speaker 3: No, I don't think so. Obviously. I believe the better
- 32:44Speaker 3: team won Philadelphia. And for a team like Washington, when
- 32:46Speaker 3: you're an underdog on the road, there's a couple of
- 32:50Speaker 3: things that come into play. And Texas fans know this
- 32:52Speaker 3: because of happened against Ohio.
- 32:53Speaker 1: State.
- 32:54Speaker 3: Got to be able to score in the red zone,
- 32:56Speaker 3: and you can't turn the ball over. And for Washington,
- 33:00Speaker 3: aust a turnover battle pretty quickly. It was a three nothing,
- 33:03Speaker 3: four nothing turnover margin. And you know a lot of
- 33:07Speaker 3: people point to the referees, but hey, those two fumbles,
- 33:11Speaker 3: it could have been a tie game at halftime, right Washington,
- 33:13Speaker 3: it could have been a one score game at halftime.
- 33:16Speaker 3: But when you lose the turnover battle like that, it's
- 33:18Speaker 3: so tough to beat a team like the Philadelphia Eagles
- 33:22Speaker 3: who execute at a very very high level and don't
- 33:26Speaker 3: really turn the ball over, And it's a tough recipe
- 33:29Speaker 3: to win when you when you do have turnovers. In
- 33:31Speaker 3: Washington unfortunately saw that, So no surprise. There a fantastic
- 33:36Speaker 3: season for the Commanders, though I don't think anyone thought
- 33:38Speaker 3: they would make it this far into the playoffs. It's
- 33:41Speaker 3: a job well done by Dan Quinn in his first season.
- 33:44Speaker 3: Cliff Kingsbury, you know, he always had the reputation for
- 33:48Speaker 3: all his offense is artist good in the second year.
- 33:50Speaker 3: The second half of the season looked pretty good all
- 33:53Speaker 3: the way through until yesterday. And defensively there's probably some
- 33:57Speaker 3: spots they want to upgrade, especially on the defensive. I
- 34:00Speaker 3: think they were down two key starters in that game.
- 34:02Speaker 3: I mean, that's obviously just part of football. Buffalo can
- 34:05Speaker 3: argue the same thing. But a good season for Washington
- 34:08Speaker 3: and unfortunately for you know, for Cowboy fans, we have
- 34:12Speaker 3: to watch Philadelphia back in the Super Bowl again, with
- 34:16Speaker 3: three times in the last ten years, one in one
- 34:19Speaker 3: record now shot at redemption for Jaalen Hurts and Nick
- 34:23Speaker 3: Sirianni and when we get to see a Sirianni cry during.
- 34:26Speaker 1: The National Asium again. All right, how did you get
- 34:30Speaker 1: to see all the AFC chance? Yes, Oh my gosh.
- 34:33Speaker 3: If you don't love football, I don't know. If you
- 34:36Speaker 3: didn't love that game last night, I don't know what
- 34:38Speaker 3: to tell you. That was a fantastic football game on
- 34:41Speaker 3: both sides in who if you pick against Patrick Mahomes,
- 34:47Speaker 3: what are you doing at this point? What else do
- 34:48Speaker 3: you need to see? I mean, this dude in this
- 34:50Speaker 3: team and Andy Reid, I mean credit to what they're done.
- 34:53Speaker 3: He's lost three playoff games, Craig, he has twenty nine
- 34:55Speaker 3: postseason victories. Tom Brady the Goat has thirty five for
- 34:59Speaker 3: his career homes. If he wins, and in two weeks
- 35:02Speaker 3: he'll only be five wins away in the postseason from
- 35:05Speaker 3: tying tom Brady's mark, and he's only twenty nine years old.
- 35:08Speaker 3: We saw what Xavier Worthy did, which all Texas fans
- 35:11Speaker 3: expected a fantastic game for him. Mark Heath Brown uh
- 35:15Speaker 3: flashing some signs, Juju smith Suster making some plays. I mean,
- 35:18Speaker 3: Travis Kelsey had won three catches and they still won.
- 35:22Speaker 3: Ryan the former big only touch, only touch of the game,
- 35:27Speaker 3: Craig came on the biggest play play of the game.
- 35:30Speaker 3: You know, it sealed the victory for Casey and you know,
- 35:33Speaker 3: of course give all the credit to Steve's back that
- 35:35Speaker 3: that blitz. He called him forth down absolutely filthy Tony
- 35:39Speaker 3: Romo right before the call. Well, I thought Roman did
- 35:41Speaker 3: a good job I know people just dislike him just
- 35:43Speaker 3: to dislike him. But you know, you know, Heath said
- 35:45Speaker 3: right before the ball was stamped, I think a don't
- 35:48Speaker 3: have time here. That was the Skies. That's back through
- 35:51Speaker 3: an Allen. Of course he did not have time somehow
- 35:53Speaker 3: it was a Dulton kincaid. The ball was in his hands.
- 35:56Speaker 3: Does not guarantee of Bill's victory. But uh, a fantastic
- 36:00Speaker 3: game for Kansas City. And I mean, speaking of tortured
- 36:03Speaker 3: fan bases, oh boy, for Buffalo it was the third now,
- 36:08Speaker 3: the third lost to Homes in the playoff. Of course
- 36:10Speaker 3: you have Josh Allen's hoing four against him at the
- 36:13Speaker 3: thirteen second games right two years ago in the divisional round,
- 36:16Speaker 3: and then now this one. I mean, I I believe
- 36:20Speaker 3: Casey was a better team. But still if you're a
- 36:22Speaker 3: Buffalo fan, I mean you're thinking, you know, what more
- 36:24Speaker 3: can we do? Like Buffalo had zero turnovers in the game, right,
- 36:28Speaker 3: just the fourth down stop. It's the biggest player. Yeah,
- 36:30Speaker 3: and I think I would like to have seen more
- 36:32Speaker 3: James Cook as well. Neck And I'm gonna repeat what
- 36:34Speaker 3: I said at the first hour. I'm not a Chiefs fan,
- 36:37Speaker 3: but I'm not an anti Chiefs fan.
- 36:38Speaker 1: You know that's I'm not worn out and wearied over
- 36:47Speaker 1: whatever when I love Taylor Swift is at the games
- 36:50Speaker 1: or whatever, and they keep showing the camera shots that's
- 36:52Speaker 1: not on the Chiefs, that's on the networks they that's
- 36:56Speaker 1: a producer making the call to do that, to take
- 36:58Speaker 1: that shot off of that, and then the director and whatever.
- 37:02Speaker 1: That's that's what they do. And if you've looked at
- 37:08Speaker 1: anything on social media, you know folks that they cheated
- 37:11Speaker 1: if Roger Goodell in the NFL, they cheat for the
- 37:14Speaker 1: Chiefs and all that. Come on.
- 37:17Speaker 3: Actually, I had a in my high school group. That's
- 37:21Speaker 3: what I'm weary. Yeah, these people saying, don't doesn't the
- 37:24Speaker 3: NFL know that we want we don't want the Eagles
- 37:27Speaker 3: and Chiefs back in it. Why are they rigging? Like
- 37:29Speaker 3: what yeah, right, it's rigged or whatever. If you if
- 37:33Speaker 3: I lose so much respect for you as a human
- 37:36Speaker 3: being if you think this is rig guys, just enjoy
- 37:40Speaker 3: enjoy the game.
- 37:40Speaker 1: And if you don't enjoy it, if you don't, if
- 37:42Speaker 1: that's cool, I understand that. Don't watch it. If you
- 37:45Speaker 1: don't watch it, but don't say the business about being
- 37:48Speaker 1: rigged and all this other kind of stuff. I've seen
- 37:50Speaker 1: two angles where it looked like Josh Allen was close
- 37:53Speaker 1: to pick it up that first down. I've seen twelve
- 37:56Speaker 1: or thirteen that show that he was not. So come on,
- 38:02Speaker 1: you know, it's just it's just it's it's difficult. They
- 38:06Speaker 1: have to make it in order to beat the Chiefs.
- 38:08Speaker 1: You better make the plays you absolutely have to make
- 38:11Speaker 1: to do it. You look back when that they lost
- 38:13Speaker 1: an AFC championship game to the Bengals, who ended up
- 38:15Speaker 1: playing the Rams in the Super Bowl. The Bengals made plays.
- 38:19Speaker 1: They came up with big plays.
- 38:20Speaker 3: When they homes and the offense in the second half.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Buffalo did not. Yeah, so there you have it. You
- 38:28Speaker 3: haven't early pick for the game. I didn't look at
- 38:32Speaker 3: the betting line.
- 38:32Speaker 1: I don't even know what the line is. I have
- 38:34Speaker 1: to think about it. I mean, my initial gut reaction
- 38:37Speaker 1: is I think the Eagles are better.
- 38:40Speaker 3: But two years ago. But the Chiefs are the Chiefs.
- 38:44Speaker 3: So you know, AC is favored by one and a half.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Okay, all right. By the way, if if, if you
- 38:51Speaker 1: love a good bad beat out of that deal. And
- 38:54Speaker 1: H camera discovered this after the game on Saturday, Texas
- 38:59Speaker 1: was they would you say A one and a half
- 39:01Speaker 1: point and a half point against A and M. So
- 39:04Speaker 1: here they are getting blown out down twenty two. So
- 39:07Speaker 1: anybody had taken A and M said Texas would not cover,
- 39:12Speaker 1: that would was very very happy. Then it rolls all
- 39:17Speaker 1: the way down to the end of the game, and
- 39:21Speaker 1: uh and A and M's up a point. And then.
- 39:26Speaker 3: The shot goes in to put Texas up a point,
- 39:29Speaker 3: but Texas still A and M still covered, still covered
- 39:32Speaker 3: by one half way. Vegas knows, yeah, Vegas, as Eddie
- 39:35Speaker 3: Orton would say, that's why you don't gamble. Just give
- 39:38Speaker 3: me your money and I'll give it back to you
- 39:39Speaker 3: the game. That's what always says, yeah, right, all right.
- 39:44Speaker 1: Up next, we're gonna hear from Jerry Jones, speaking of gambles.
- 39:47Speaker 1: He's gambling on Brian Schottenhummer being the guy who can
- 39:51Speaker 1: get the Cowboys to the Promised Land. That's next here
- 39:53Speaker 1: on thirteen under the Zone.
- 40:01Speaker 4: Welcome back to The Craig Way Show and the Voice

- 41:41Speaker 1: a pair of tickets. Be sure to do that. All right,
- 41:44Speaker 1: Let's let's hear some comments about this Cowboys coaches hiring
- 41:50Speaker 1: from Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, and from the new head
- 41:53Speaker 1: coach himself, Brian Schottenheimer. First, Jerry and Steven were asked
- 41:58Speaker 1: why did they hire and it's it's put down there
- 42:02Speaker 1: a Shoddy, which, by the way, is his nickname. I
- 42:03Speaker 1: don't know that. I don't want that nickname Shoty Shody.
- 42:06Speaker 1: I think I mean he it's his nickname is with
- 42:09Speaker 1: two t's, but if you think of it as two d's,
- 42:13Speaker 1: it's like a guy who doesn't Shoty doesn't do a
- 42:16Speaker 1: good job.
- 42:17Speaker 3: Well, i'll tell you what. When the Cowboys are I
- 42:19Speaker 3: don't know, three or nine, Yeah, and there will be
- 42:22Speaker 3: a lot of like coach Shoty jokes going around and
- 42:26Speaker 3: the t's will not be t's obds.
- 42:28Speaker 1: So all right, uh, well, here's Jerry and Steven. Although
- 42:31Speaker 1: I think it's primarily Jerry is I don't think Steven
- 42:33Speaker 1: was love to talk during this, okay, question, The question
- 42:36Speaker 1: was why did they make this higher.
- 42:41Speaker 7: And almost thirty five years that I've been involved. It's
- 42:46Speaker 7: Dallas Cowboys. I've only missed one senior bow thirty five years,
- 42:58Speaker 7: and I think I missed one come in thirty five
- 43:01Speaker 7: years at the NFL over the last four or five
- 43:08Speaker 7: years the NFL. We want to come in a day
- 43:14Speaker 7: early so that we can visit with perspective coaches for
- 43:21Speaker 7: the future of my team and any of the teams
- 43:27Speaker 7: in thirty five years. I don't think I've ever visited
- 43:32Speaker 7: with a coach, But what in my heart and mind,
- 43:37Speaker 7: I wasn't having an interview. I don't think I've ever
- 43:41Speaker 7: had a coach visit with me that wasn't perspectively thinking
- 43:47Speaker 7: maybe someday our past might cross. I know Jones might
- 43:52Speaker 7: give me a little thought as I'm along the way.
- 43:58Speaker 7: I've been around a lot of coaches. As a matter
- 44:01Speaker 7: of fact, I wanted to be a coach, except I
- 44:07Speaker 7: wanted to live better than I thought coaches left. I
- 44:09Speaker 7: wanted to drive a little bigger car, and I wanted
- 44:11Speaker 7: to fly in an airplane had I known what I'm
- 44:15Speaker 7: paying them now to have been a damn coach. But
- 44:21Speaker 7: having said that, coaching is no no and the makeup
- 44:28Speaker 7: of coaches are no stranger to me. On my college team,
- 44:34Speaker 7: within almost three years after we won the national championship,
- 44:38Speaker 7: every position coach, the Johnny Majors, the Hayden Fries, the
- 44:43Speaker 7: Doug Dickies, every position coach became a head coach Barry
- 44:47Speaker 7: Switzerland at Oklahoma. So I've seen it when I was
- 44:54Speaker 7: a pup. I have a good background in the makeup
- 45:05Speaker 7: of what a coach is. To think that you could
- 45:13Speaker 7: make a decision in an interview and not have talked
- 45:21Speaker 7: if you didn't and hadn't ever communicated or had a visit,
- 45:26Speaker 7: I wouldn't dare have had an interview unless I talked
- 45:29Speaker 7: to many many people that knew that person and those
- 45:36Speaker 7: kinds of life experiences, knew their story if you will,
- 45:38Speaker 7: shot him, knew their story. Pat is here today, Jeane,
- 45:45Speaker 7: my wife is here. Pat has shot his mama. When
- 45:51Speaker 7: I served on the Competent Competition Committee, we had many
- 45:54Speaker 7: times that we were together. Jane knew Marty. Okay, we
- 46:03Speaker 7: knew you. We know what osmosis is and we know
- 46:09Speaker 7: what shot he grew up around. Not just from that,
- 46:13Speaker 7: but we knew frankly from the standpoint of shady.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Those ex hairs crossed.
- 46:24Speaker 7: Shoty might never have been in our mirror or in
- 46:26Speaker 7: our view had not joined us to be with Mike
- 46:32Speaker 7: as a consultant three years ago.
- 46:33Speaker 3: And it has been a coach.
- 46:37Speaker 7: I've set in handfuls of meetings which Sha.
- 46:43Speaker 1: I've listened. I've watched him.
- 46:44Speaker 7: I've watched him have difference to his head coach. I've
- 46:47Speaker 7: watched him have deference to experience, guys like Zimmer, guys
- 46:53Speaker 7: left get around. I've watched him bite his lips sometime
- 46:57Speaker 7: when he didn't necessarily agree with that direction, but he
- 47:01Speaker 7: bit his limp as his daddy would have told him
- 47:03Speaker 7: to bite your lip. Have deference to the head coach.
- 47:10Speaker 7: I've watched him exercise those things. I've particularly been a
- 47:13Speaker 7: part of seeing what's brought this players in here today,
- 47:19Speaker 7: Guys like that. And I know that Shady is no
- 47:24Speaker 7: stranger to these guys. I know he's no stranger to
- 47:29Speaker 7: this building. Now I get my verbial ass kick over
- 47:34Speaker 7: needing people in my comfort zone without this thing being
- 47:41Speaker 7: about me in any way. If you don't think I
- 47:45Speaker 7: can operate out of my comfort zone, you're so wrong,
- 47:48Speaker 7: it's unbelievable.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Okay, My thoughts from Jerry Jones sound a little defensive
- 47:57Speaker 1: and ready to I almost got the vibe that he
- 48:01Speaker 1: was responding in large measure, not so much to the media,
- 48:04Speaker 1: but to the fans who have been so angry and
- 48:07Speaker 1: heart was responding to you, Cameron Parker, you questioning his decisions.
- 48:14Speaker 3: He didn't even answer the question. I was talking about
- 48:18Speaker 3: his wife and then shot his wife. I mean, yeah, yeah,
- 48:22Speaker 3: I guess that's what you got to do at some point,
- 48:24Speaker 3: right You got to be able to take a question
- 48:26Speaker 3: and just completely deflect him.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Yeah, some of that. We'll actually hear from Shoddy from
- 48:32Speaker 1: the new Cowboys head coach coming up here on a
- 48:36Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone Aaron on Monday afternoon. I'm thirteen
- 49:00Speaker 1: hunder the Zone, Craig White, Cameron Parker with you. So
- 49:04Speaker 1: we heard from Jerry Jones from this Cowboys news conference
- 49:06Speaker 1: on why Brian Schottenheimer is now the choice for the
- 49:14Speaker 1: head coach. Let's hear from the man they call Shoddy himself.
- 49:19Speaker 1: He was asked why he believes he can take Dallas
- 49:23Speaker 1: farther than Mike McCarthy did.
- 49:26Speaker 8: Mike's one of my best friends. And when you talk
- 49:29Speaker 8: about what Mike and this football team has done over
- 49:33Speaker 8: the last five years. It's been some incredible, incredible success.
- 49:41Speaker 8: One of my greatest strengths is my ability to create relationships,
- 49:50Speaker 8: relationships that are built on trust, respect, connection. I'm really
- 50:00Speaker 8: good with ex's and o's, but I'm great with people, and.
- 50:07Speaker 1: The type of men that we have in this locker
- 50:11Speaker 1: room are excited about that.
- 50:15Speaker 6: And so.
- 50:17Speaker 8: I think as we build this thing out, as the
- 50:20Speaker 8: culture comes together of this team, that's where I feel
- 50:25Speaker 8: like my greatest impact will be felt. With the relationships,
- 50:32Speaker 8: the ability to communicate. I've always been someone that was
- 50:39Speaker 8: very good at having open dialogue, hard conversations, and I've
- 50:47Speaker 8: always tried to paint very clear, bright lines, and that's
- 50:51Speaker 8: what I plan to do as the head coach of
- 50:53Speaker 8: the Dallas Cowboys.
- 50:54Speaker 2: All Right.
- 50:54Speaker 1: He was also asked, and I think it was our
- 50:56Speaker 1: friend and my boss for seven years and one of
- 50:59Speaker 1: the mental wars I've had in my broadcast career, Brad
- 51:02Speaker 1: Sham the voice of the Cowboys, Why is he ready
- 51:05Speaker 1: now to take a head coaching job.
- 51:09Speaker 8: I think you know, over the past nineteen years when
- 51:14Speaker 8: that first was afforded me, when I was first time
- 51:17Speaker 8: coordinated with the New York Jets and.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Bright spotlight. I just there were there were things that
- 51:28Speaker 1: made me pause.
- 51:30Speaker 8: Now, spending the better part of the last nineteen years learning, listening, doing,
- 51:38Speaker 8: I've learned things, almost more things that I don't believe
- 51:43Speaker 8: in than things that I believe in. Todd, I've always
- 51:46Speaker 8: tried to be someone that moves around. I want to
- 51:49Speaker 8: I want to be around incredible coaches and players and
- 51:53Speaker 8: try to learn from them. And so going to Seattle
- 51:58Speaker 8: was I would say, critical coal to my development as
- 52:01Speaker 8: a coach. Pete Carroll challenged me in a number of ways.
- 52:08Speaker 8: He challenged me to be to continue to be authentic,
- 52:14Speaker 8: to continue to dive into the relationships that matter, which
- 52:17Speaker 8: is your coaches, your players, ownership. He challenged me offensively,
- 52:24Speaker 8: to be honest with you. Challenged me with, hey, what
- 52:28Speaker 8: do you think about this scheme? What do you think
- 52:29Speaker 8: about that scheme?
- 52:30Speaker 2: You know?
- 52:30Speaker 1: And the McVeigh.
- 52:32Speaker 8: Shanahan style was taken off and Seattle we were competing against,
- 52:36Speaker 8: you know, Sean and Kyle, and so he's like he
- 52:38Speaker 8: was pressing me. So I just really feel like things
- 52:43Speaker 8: changed for me when I went with Pete. Learned a
- 52:47Speaker 8: ton from my dad and all the coaches, Mike and
- 52:51Speaker 8: Steve Spurrier, all those guys. But Pete Carroll had a
- 52:54Speaker 8: huge impact on me and it probably sharpened my edge
- 52:58Speaker 8: and sharpened my view on what I want this opportunity
- 53:04Speaker 8: to look like. And that was a big, big, big
- 53:07Speaker 8: change for me, and uh one that uh I'm excited
- 53:11Speaker 8: about moving forward.
- 53:12Speaker 1: Here's a common thread with Sark and Pete Carroll was
- 53:14Speaker 1: an influence on him from that. And then we actually
- 53:18Speaker 1: have a piece of sound where Steven Jones actually speaks,
- 53:22Speaker 1: and this is the one where he was asked what
- 53:24Speaker 1: went on behind closed doors in their conversations that ultimately
- 53:29Speaker 1: led to the decision to hire Brian John Hier.
- 53:32Speaker 6: You know, as I said, and certainly I probably won't
- 53:35Speaker 6: anybody have respect, uh, you know for what Shoty's role was.
- 53:39Speaker 6: I mean, Mike was our play caller. He was our
- 53:41Speaker 6: head coach, and then he was our play caller, and uh,
- 53:44Speaker 6: you know, Shotty was there to support him as the
- 53:46Speaker 6: offensive coordinator. But I think the you know, some of
- 53:49Speaker 6: the most important things, uh for us, after you get
- 53:53Speaker 6: to know the man better and you see the energy,
- 53:56Speaker 6: you see the way he can communicate with Jerry, with myself,
- 53:59Speaker 6: with the room. You know, certainly that jumped out at you.
- 54:03Speaker 6: But the bigger thing is I mentioned you know, we certainly,
- 54:06Speaker 6: uh want continuity, but we also want change and uh,
- 54:10Speaker 6: you know just felt like, you know, we we need.
- 54:14Speaker 1: Something that's going to freshen it up.
- 54:16Speaker 2: Uh.
- 54:16Speaker 1: Mike did one hell of a job here.
- 54:18Speaker 6: He's the winging his coach, I think in the history
- 54:21Speaker 6: of the franchise, you know, had an unprecedented you know,
- 54:24Speaker 6: three year run when in twelve games, So you know,
- 54:26Speaker 6: Mike did a lot of great things here. But at
- 54:29Speaker 6: the same time, uh, you know, we just felt like
- 54:32Speaker 6: Jerry felt like I was supportive of it, you know,
- 54:34Speaker 6: that we did need change and we wanted to hear
- 54:37Speaker 6: what how that was going to happen. And you know
- 54:41Speaker 6: it's not just the x as and o We obviously
- 54:43Speaker 6: went extensively uh through the x'es and o's, but we
- 54:46Speaker 6: also uh you know, you get into the schedules, you
- 54:50Speaker 6: get into how you get your players motivated, how you
- 54:53Speaker 6: take care of your players. All those things are you know,
- 54:56Speaker 6: part of being a head coach, and it's a lot
- 54:58Speaker 6: and that's why you a lot of people sometimes scratch
- 55:01Speaker 6: their head while why would you go with a first
- 55:04Speaker 6: time head coach? You know that's been the way of
- 55:07Speaker 6: the league these days, most are going with these young
- 55:10Speaker 6: offensive wizards.
- 55:12Speaker 1: That hadn't been head coaches.
- 55:14Speaker 6: But I think we've got a better version of that
- 55:16Speaker 6: because of Shoddy's experience.
- 55:18Speaker 1: I mean everybody's mentioned it.
- 55:20Speaker 6: Twenty five years of NFL coaching and a whole lifetime
- 55:25Speaker 6: of being around it. He played the game, you know,
- 55:28Speaker 6: at high level of competition in college. Certainly that made
- 55:34Speaker 6: an impression on him. But it was real important. The
- 55:37Speaker 6: more we met, the more we wanted to meet, and
- 55:41Speaker 6: I think that was helping us, you know, come to
- 55:43Speaker 6: a conclusion on what that decision should be in terms of,
- 55:49Speaker 6: you know, coach Schottenheimer being our next head coach.
- 55:52Speaker 1: Okay, well, the thing that I was struck out of
- 55:55Speaker 1: that is he said that seems to be the way
- 55:58Speaker 1: in the NFL is these young offensive Wiart's regarded, and
- 56:01Speaker 1: we think we have a better version of that. Okay.
- 56:05Speaker 1: So it's better than Kyle Shanahan, It's better than Sean McVay,
- 56:11Speaker 1: better than Matt Lafleur's better than Mike McDaniels. It's better offense. Okay,
- 56:20Speaker 1: all right, that's uh. I believe that, like I believe
- 56:25Speaker 1: pro Football Focused several years ago, and so many people
- 56:28Speaker 1: put so much stock in Pro Football Focus when Pro
- 56:31Speaker 1: Football Focus several years ago, just a few years ago,
- 56:37Speaker 1: said that Cliff Kingsbury was a better head coach than
- 56:39Speaker 1: Sean McVay, and this was right after the Rams had
- 56:43Speaker 1: won the Super Bowl one receipts. I'm telling you, I
- 56:49Speaker 1: understand that, you know the amount of faith that folks
- 56:54Speaker 1: put in the Pro Football Focus, but sometimes they miss,
- 56:57Speaker 1: and that's a big miss on that one was right
- 57:00Speaker 1: before Kingsbury got fired in Arizona. Now, Clift did an
- 57:03Speaker 1: amazing job at Washington and they could probably even go
- 57:07Speaker 1: up from there on that. But I thought that was
- 57:09Speaker 1: a little bit of a stretch back then, just like
- 57:12Speaker 1: I think it's a little bit of a stretch right
- 57:13Speaker 1: now with Stevens saying they think they have a better
- 57:15Speaker 1: version of that. And forgive me if I think that.
- 57:18Speaker 1: You know that Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay and Matt
- 57:24Speaker 1: Lafleur and Mike McDaniels and those guys are better than
- 57:31Speaker 1: what Schttenheimer hasn't proven anything yet, but we'll have a
- 57:35Speaker 1: chance to see. Now he'll step in and he'll be
- 57:37Speaker 1: the head coach. All right, we'll be back to wrap
- 57:40Speaker 1: up our number two here on thirteen under the Zone,
- 57:42Speaker 1: third and final hour of the program. Here, I'm thirteen
- 57:46Speaker 1: under the Zone. Craig Way joined by the producer Cameron Parker,
- 57:49Speaker 1: will with you up until five o'clock. Coming up in
- 57:50Speaker 1: a few minutes, we'll talk Texas women's basketball with head
- 57:53Speaker 1: coach Vick Schaeffer Longhorns, coming off three wins in six
- 57:58Speaker 1: days and in all three cases beating ranked opponents, and
- 58:03Speaker 1: the toughest perhaps of the three games, the rally back
- 58:06Speaker 1: to win in Oxford over Ole Miss, And we'll get
- 58:10Speaker 1: his thoughts on They got a couple other questions general
- 58:14Speaker 1: women's college basketball questions I need to ask him. I
- 58:16Speaker 1: haven't had a chance to visit with him too much
- 58:18Speaker 1: about this. We've also heard from Jerry Jones. We've heard
- 58:22Speaker 1: from Brian Schottenheimer on the official making it announcement of
- 58:28Speaker 1: the Cowboys introducing Schottenheimer as their new head coach at
- 58:32Speaker 1: a news conference today. We'll hear some more from them
- 58:35Speaker 1: just a little bit later on as well. NBA the
- 58:40Speaker 1: Other Shoe did drop Cameron Miami Heat suspending Jimmy Butler
- 58:44Speaker 1: indefinitely It's the third time that Butler's been suspended by
- 58:48Speaker 1: the Heat in recent weeks. It comes after he was
- 58:51Speaker 1: expected to return from his second suspension Monday night tonight
- 58:54Speaker 1: against Orlando. The Heat we're planning to have Butler come
- 59:00Speaker 1: off the bench moving forward. Remember he missed a team flight.
- 59:06Speaker 1: He had a pair of suspensions. The first was for
- 59:11Speaker 1: seven games due to conduct that the Heat needed detrimental.
- 59:14Speaker 1: That was when he was talking about wanting to be
- 59:16Speaker 1: traded and he was done with the Heat. So then
- 59:20Speaker 1: after he returned for three games, he got suspended again
- 59:22Speaker 1: for two games because he missed a team flight to
- 59:25Speaker 1: Milwaukee last week. The Heat have said they're trying to
- 59:29Speaker 1: work a deal. Butler says he wants to be traded.
- 59:31Speaker 1: So then the Heat we're planning to have Butler come
- 59:34Speaker 1: off the bench at least starting the night against Orlando.
- 59:39Speaker 1: He responded to the news by walking out of their
- 59:41Speaker 1: morning shoot around today. So the Heat suspended him indefinitely. Yeah,
- 59:47Speaker 1: that'll get your suspension. Just walk off the floor, walk
- 59:50Speaker 1: out on your team like that.
- 59:52Speaker 3: He posted on Instagram. Just now video. I think it's
- 59:56Speaker 3: from the show Martin with Martin Lawrence, I one of
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: the characters talking about Martin Lawrence starting with the character
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: being jobless. So Jimmy Butler kind of poking fun at
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: at Kevin Love, who is a Miami player, kind of
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: doing the same thing, posting a little meme video of
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: a Denzel Washington movie on Instagram, also poking fun at
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: at Jimmy Butler. What a disastrous turn of events this
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: has been this season for the Miami Heat and Craig
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: I don't really know what the fix is. Obviously, the
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: relationship between Butler and the Miami Heat strained beyond repair.
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: There's no coming back from.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: This, and their level five hundred right now, they'd be
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: in the They be in the play in if the
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: postseason started.
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: And judge them by this post from Jimmy Butler, He's
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: done with the team, so now you got to find
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: a way to be able to trade him. But again,
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: you know, Jimmy Butler an expiring deal, so he wants
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: to at least it seems he wants to be traded
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: to a team that will give him a contract extension,
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: which there might not be a lot of teams who
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: a have the financial flexibility to be able to trade
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: for him and also extend him. Be there not not
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: be any teams that want to extend him. And then
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: see remember this whole poor, this whole point about the
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: second Apron, right, A lot of teams that would like
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: to possibly trade for him, like you know, the Golden
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: State Warriors, or the Phoenix Suns or the Milwaukee Bucks.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: You know, they are impacted by this second apron and
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: it makes so much makes being able to trade for
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: a player of his caliber and with his contract much
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: more difficult. So I think of the you know, the
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: Phoenix Suns, they kind of seem like that the team
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: that everyone thinks it's going to end up with them.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: You know, they have Bradley Beal. You know, Beal's been benched.
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: Nurki It's been benched, Jimmy Butler's been benched. Jimmy Butler's
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: indicated he wants to go to the Phoenix Suns and
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: play with Booker and Katie. I think the Heat could
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: use someone like Nurkice and someone like Bradley Beal, but
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: does it doesn't work because Miami, you know, Bradley Buial's
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: owed a hundred and eleven million dollars. They would have
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: to take that from Bradley Beal or find a team
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: that would be willing to take that contract off of
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: Bradley Bial. So if you would trade for Bradley Bild,
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: then you would trade him to another team that has
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: to take on And it doesn't seem like Miami or
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: pat really wants to take on that contract because I
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: don't think Bradley Bial is worth a hundred and eleven
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: million dollars. So it's trying to find a team that
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: wants to one that can afford his contract and also
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: be wants to deal with the personality Jimmy brother because
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: he's gone now from what Chicago to Minnesota, to Philadelphia
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: and now Miami, and outside of Chicago, has he left
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: the other three teams amicably?
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: No?
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: No, I totally forgot about the t Wolves. Yeah, that
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: was a disaster. I mean the whole practice thing where
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: he went in and flipped out on Anthony Towns and
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: Dangelo maybe Dangel Russell. And then that goes to Philadelphia
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: and you know, Embiid and Jimmy Butler get long, no chance,
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: no chance. And now Miami, I mean he took Miami.
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: The two conference finals are two NBA finals, excuse me?
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: And I understand he wants to get paid but you know,
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: he hasn't played well the last couple of years. He
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: hasn't been healthy the last couple years, So I understand
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: Miami and pat Riley not wanting to really pay him.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: Also, I think Jimmy Butler, I mean, the NBA trade
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: deadline is kind of turning into kind of a snoozefest
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: because of all the new cap and this new CBA
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: that a player like Jimmy Butler, who I just don't
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: think is that good anymore, is becoming a huge storyline,
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: and I think, honestly, I'm kind of past it. Craig,
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: I just I don't think Jimmy Butler's going to make
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: the Suns or the Warriors or the Bucks or whoever
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: an NBA contender just because they have Jimmy Butler on
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: the team. So it's crazy seeing how the storyline has
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: dragged out. But you know, I do not expect to
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: see Jimmy Butler ever playing with the game of basketball
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: in Miami Heat uniform.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: I know that every player ultimately is his own man. However,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: many of them put so much faith and trust in
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: their representation, in their agents. Maybe I'm just way off
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: based on this and don't understand it enough. I would
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: think also that his agents would tell him this is
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: not a good move. You know, let us work. See
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: if we work the deal. But you can't make the
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: situation worse by walking out on your team. They're going
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: to suspend you if that's the case, and it makes
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: it much more difficult to do a deal with a
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: suspended player than when an active contributing participant.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: And I believe every game he misses Craig, it's about
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: nine hundred thousand dollars good Lord, per game, per game.
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: And there's something, you know, there's some you know, verbiage
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: in the contract and the CBA, you know, like certain
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: things will get fined for and certain things not. But
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: deestimation he's lost over I think we're getting close to,
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: you know, eight figures in terms of because he's missed.
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: You know, he's missed a lot of games this season
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: now he started five. He's made a lot of money
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: in his career, so obviously he's doing this on purpose.
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean over the weekend, Craig video is
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: popping up of him at some some club in Miami
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: getting into it with people there. It's like, yo, like
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: you what about the agent, Like, if you're his agent
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: and he's pr guy, where is the whole thing about? Oh,
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: Jimmy Butler's been in the gym non stop. It seems like,
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: you know, he could be working out and he could
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: be practicing, but it seems like he's missing these games.
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: He's you know, it's a complete clown. So he's going
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: the club still, he doesn't really care. Why would you
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: want to trade for that? Why would you want to.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Find what I'm saying he make It makes one's marketability. Yeah,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: extremely difficult. We're going to trade for like if you're
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: a contender like Milwaukee Bucks, the worst. Our goal with
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: the Suns, our goal is to win and content for
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: an NBA championship. You're trading for a guy who's getting
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: in the fights with some dude at some club in
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: Miami over the weekend while people are questioning his you know,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: questioning what he's doing. No, it's it's an awful look.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: It's an awful look. And he's a grown man. He's
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: thirty five. He should know what he's doing to his image.
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: I mean, we know he's been a good basketball player
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: when he's been healthy, but just an awful look his
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: value is going down. The Miami Heat have no leverage.
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: I don't think Butler has any leverage. It's it's been
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: a lose lose for both sides.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: I think after last season it makes me think about
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: something that is back obviously almost fifteen years. I guess
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: it's been a long time. Jimmy Butler, of course, being
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: from the Houston area, really wanted to go to the
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: University of Texas very much. So wanted to go to
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: the University of Texas. He's from Tyler, I guess originally,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: but he had played down at the Academy in Houston,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: I believe, and really wanted to go to the University
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: of Texas and Rick Barnes did not.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: He went to Tyler.
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: He's from the Tomball High School, I said, the Houston area. Yeah,
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: I was thinking Tyler Jua but Juco where he started
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: his career.
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: And so the're academic issues first of all, to try
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: to get him into school, and then the other thing.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: Rick Barnes had be given intel that that he wasn't
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: a good teammate and that and that, and I think
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: the phrase had got the end of up quit on
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: his team before. And that comes to mind when when
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: I see this, and Rick ended up not really actively
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: recruiting him, and then he kind of, you know, did
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: a slow burn on that was mad that he never
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: got recruited to play at Texas, and he's had some
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: fabulous games in the NBA. But now you look at
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: this's what's happening there. It's certainly not helping a situation.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: So anyway, it's an indefinite suspension there for Jimmy Butler.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: All right, we're going to talk college basketball and of
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: the women's variety. We'll visit with head coach Vick Schaeffer
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: of the Texas women's team. Coming up here on a
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: thirteen under the zone. It bounced to the left side
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: of Addison Scott, guarded by Jordan League. Ten seconds to go,
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: Scott trying to drive inside down on the baseline, fadeaway jumpers,
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: short fall ups on the floor lead with the rebound
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: for Texas, and they Fouler a two point six to go.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: So here we go. Scott the inbound right in front
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: of the ole miss bitch looking still looking, lots it
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: high in the air. It's picked off by Booker and
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: that will do it. Madison. Booker comes home to Mississippi
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: knocks down a key jumper, comes up with a steal,
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: and the Loghorns get out of Oxford with their twentieth
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: win of the season and their sixth SEC win of
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: the year, and was quite the finish to yesterday's game
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: for the long Horns Texas with a win over Ole
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: miss in Oxford sixty one to fifty eight. We welcome
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: you back to the program, Craig Way, alongside the producer
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: Cameron Parker. Very pleased to be joined by the head
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: coach of the Longhorns, and that's big Schaeffer joins us
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: now on the hot line. Vick I, you know this
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: is life in the league. And you told me a
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: week ago after the win over Maryland, you said, this
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: team befuddles me from time to time. I like that term,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: but I thought about that when you've had really good
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: performances and then games where you really had to fight
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: for your life against a good old miss team yesterday.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Well, and you got to remember that team yesterday has
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: been in and out of the top twenty five this year.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: They're really good. They're a veteran team and their best
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: players a fifty year senior like Shay in her COVID year.
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: So you know, we beat a really good team on
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: the road yesterday. It was their fifty year reunion you know,
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: for their best players and best team over the years.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: So you know, it was a great win for our kids.
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: I mean to be down eight inside of five minutes,
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: seven inside of just inside of outside of four, outscored
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: from thirteen to two down the stretch. We had so
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: many people, you know, contribute to that win yesterday, finding
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: out twenty five minutes for the game that Eleah Moore
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: is not going to be available, not having a chance
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: to really practice, knowing that, not even having a shoot around,
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: knowing that that was you know, that throws a little
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: bit of a wrench into things. So proud of our kids.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: We had to play the bus driver defense yesterday a lot,
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: which I don't like, but we had a matchup problem
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: that we had to cover up and kids did a
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: great job in it.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: Hey.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: Hey, and by the way, good afternoon. Thanks for having
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: me on.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: Yeah you bet you know. Now, now explain bus driver
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: defense that goes to zone. I know you mixed in
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: a little bit of zone, but that's not your classic
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: what I've heard you referred to what opponents do to
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: you the classic two three hope you miss.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: Zone right right, Yeah, we were. We had to play
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: the match up yesterday a little bit, and you know,
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: I don't know why, but I kind of thought we might.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: We worked on it a little bit Saturday. We actually
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: spent some some significant time because I thought we might
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: have to play it, and sure enough we did. So,
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: you know, our kids did a good job. I think
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: we held them to thirty seven points over the three
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: quarters that we had to play it, and had two
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: quarters of eleven points the second and the fourth quarter.
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: So the last five minutes though, yesterday was our typical
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: man and we did a great job. Jordan Lee did
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: a great job with Madison Scott on their team, who
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: was their best player. And you know, Taylor Jones was
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: special yesterday, twenty four and six and ten out of
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: eleventh free throw line, seven for eleven from the field. Obviously,
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: Booker made some big shots for us down the stretch.
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: And I thought Rory really did a good job running
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: her team yesterday. She just really played well under control.
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: Seven assists, just did a great job. So we had
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: seventeen assists on twenty two baskets.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: You you called time out when you were down fifty
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: six forty eight, six minutes to go, largest depthsit of
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: the ball game. They had an eight point lead in
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: the first half, but they had an eight point lead
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: there at at fifty six forty eight. What was the
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: message because after that, from that point your team out
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: scored them thirteen to two and really held them completely
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: scoreless the final four minutes of the game.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, I just you know, we were in a
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: spot we needed to get a we needed to score.
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: So I'm pretty sure we talked about a set that
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: I wanted to run and get some get the ball
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: the right person. They were really struggling Garden Taylor inside.
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: She had basically filed out their whole post group and
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: her head put them in foul trouble. So they were
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: having a hard time dealing with her, and you know,
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: we went to her a lot. I think she had
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: ten points in the fourth quarter.
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: But.
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: Man, it was physical down there. They you know, somebody said,
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: where were you? I said, I was following the report,
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: Uh for you know, assault she was. She was really
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: getting all We'll just say she was getting a lot
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: of attention, no doubt. So you know, it's just proud
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: of her. She showed a lot of toughness yesterday, Craig.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: She's really grown in that area, and uh so I'm
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: happy for her. And obviously I'm kidding about the assault,
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: but it just you know, she really she really took
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: took a beating yesterday and just kept on ticking. Man.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: She stayed right after it. And she's really grown her toughness.
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: Her level of comfettive spirit and toughness is really improved.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about it. Visiting the vic Shaef for
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: Texas Women's head coach here on thirteen under zone, I'm
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: looking at the updated top twenty five. Your teams up
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: to number five now moved back up to the number
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: five spot. But I'm looking at the other teams here.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: You haven't played UCLA yet. Uh maybe somewhere down the
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: round the NCAA they're number one. But I'm looking at
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: the teams you played and or will play. South Carolina's
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: number two. You played them over in Columbia. You're gonna
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: get them here on Super Bowl Sunday early that afternoon.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: Notre Dame's number three had to play them all on
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: the road overtime game. There you have LSU's number seven.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: They're here on the sixteenth. Then you've got Kentucky number twelve.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: You've got to go there and play. You have Oklahoma
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: number thirteen, you've already won up there. You have Maryland
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: number fourteen. Them were number eight when you beat them
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: a week ago. Looking at this down the Tennessee is
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: number eighteen. They dropped one spot after you beat them
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: the other day. West Virginia you beat down in the
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: tournament in Fort Myers. Their number twenty one. Alabama you
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: beat handily their number twenty two Vanderbilt. You're going to
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: be playing Shay Ralph has them in the poll for
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: the first time in eleven years. They're in at number
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: twenty three. So, I mean, I know the beat goes on,
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: and I know it's a murderers road thing, but I
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: guess that's become life in the SEC. Is you knew
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: what when you were coaching Mississippi State, right question?
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I think our kids. I was
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: talking to Rory and Mattie earlier today. They stopped by.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: It's their off day and we don't do anything. But
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: you know, it's just it's different. The athleticism, the length
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: is way different. In this lebel in this league, and
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: so our kids are really having to adjust to that.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: You can talk about it all you want, but until
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: you experience it and see it. You know, our kids
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: that have been here, Shay Rory, that have been here
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: a long time, they're really you know, they're they're seeing
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: the difference. And that's no disrespect to the Big twelve,
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: but it's just different. So we're adjusting, our kids are
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: learning to, you know, how to deal with it. And
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: that's what I thought. Rory was so special yesterday. She
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: really did a good job and managing our team, managing
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: the game. She was level headed, solid, she was poised
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: in the noise yesterday and so really really good game
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: for her.
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: I asked you in our pregame conversation if you even
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: needed to say anything to Madison about coming back home
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: to play with thirty plus family and friends there in
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: the stands, and you said, no, she handles all that
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: really well, and she'll have to do it again when
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: we come back to play Mississippi State. I'm just curious,
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: as a general overall of view, I would imagine I
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: guess it comes down to the individual player. But when
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: you have a player going back to her hometown or
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: her home area region to play. Is it individual as
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: to whether you even say anything to anyone about that,
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: about how they mentally and emotionally handle that scenario walking
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: into it.
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I don't. I don't think over the years,
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: I make a too big of a deal over as
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: far as you know how somebody's going to play in
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: the game. It needs to be fun, you know. I
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: was so happy for Madison yesterday. She had her eighth
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: grade I think history teacher, English teacher at the game yesterday.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: She didn't know she was going to be there, and
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: she had so much so much family there, and uh,
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: you know, I'm just a happy for her, you know
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: that she was able to do that and they got
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: to see her obviously make a big shot. She had
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: three big blocks. Defensively, was a factor for us had
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: she had ten rebounds, you know, for assists, had two steals,
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: three block shots. I mean, she had a really she
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: filled up the statue, you know, more than just points
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: and so but that's Madison and and that's that's why
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: I have so much confidence Center. I don't care if
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: she's missed five in a row or made five in
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: a row. I promise you I'm probably still coming, you know,
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: coming to her and going to that well every chance
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: I get you. Uh.
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: And by the way, this comes with no surprise to you.
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: She was named the Natesmith Trophy Player of the Week
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: for those three games there. And I want to ask you, yeah,
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: I want to ask you also, uh to tell people
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: a little bet about Leah Crump for folks who don't know.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: That's a McDonald's solimeric named the McDonald's All American today.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: And she'll be coming in uh next season, and and uh,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: this is someone who's won gold for the US Women's
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: America Cup in Leo, Mexico. Uh, for that Nike Hoops Summit.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: All of those kinds of things tell everybody the type
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: of players she'll be or what you envisioned her to
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: be when she comes in next season.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: Yeah, just really excited about her. Great kid, unbelievable family.
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: Big guard six one May now has point guards vision
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: like Booker does. She sees the floor, she enjoys the
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: passes much as the bucket, big time range out to
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: way past the three point line has the mid range,
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: can finish at the rim with contact. Just a really
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: good player. We're super excited about her. We we Uh
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: you know, I went to Minnesota more than I've ever
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: been there. My staff did a great job recruiting her.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: And you know, just just really gonna make an impact
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: on our team right away, I believe. And uh, fit's
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: right in with what we do and how we do it.
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: And so she's gonna be somebody everybody's gonna love watching.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: Plays the game. Extremely hard, tough kid, doesn't mind banging
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: and being physical down there, and uh, you know, it's
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: gonna be fun. She's a She's a really good player.
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: That a great kid.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: I'm curious to get your thoughts on something completely different.
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: I remember asking you about this when you were asked
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: about it at length. I think of news conferences. Last year,
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: is her team embarked on its NCAA tournament journey, you
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: were asked, uh, what do you think about this new
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: format where the NCAA is playing two Sweet sixteens and
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: two Elite eights at the same site. And last year
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: was all but the im Portland and your team ultimately
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: got out to the Elite eight in Portland. This year
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: it's Birmingham and Spokane, and and you were asked what
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: you think of it? And you said, well, we haven't
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: done it yet. I want to go through this and
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: and see how it's operated and and uh and and
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: see what I think of it. All right, So there's
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: one under belt. And other than that that indelible image.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: I remember you stepping off the distance out to the
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: three point arc in Portland. That wasn't far enough out.
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: That was a little bit different. Other than that, what's
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: your thought on it now? Having been through it one time?
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: As they get ready to do this again this time
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: with Spokane in Birmingham being the two Sweet sixteen Slash
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: Elite eight sites.
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not a fan. It's too many games in
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: one site, which makes it difficult for teams to practice,
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: have shoot arounds. You know, they screwed up our time.
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: We were the last team to play one night and
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: the first one to have to practice the next morning. True,
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: that's crazy, that's like stupid, but that's what happened. Obviously,
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: we had the court issue. You know where we were
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: last year. I was trying to have a press conference
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: and you got some machine with the backup beeper going on, right,
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: you know, the fifty feet from me. I mean, just
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: as a trade wreck, and I just but I don't
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: lie that many people at one site. It really inhibits
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: and restricts your ability to practice in the facility, shoot
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: around in the facility in a timely manner. So I'm
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: not a fan. I don't like it. You know, whish
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: they'd go back to the the four predetermined sites and
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: you know, for the for the Sweet sixteen.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: And you'd also have a chance to play a little
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: closer to home, wouldn't you too if you had that
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: instead of you know, Birmingham is you know whatever, six
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: hundred miles away. I mean, that's the closes the Spokane.
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: You've already done that before a few years ago, way
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: up in the Northwest. I mean, you would think if
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: you put one one in the east, one in the South,
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: one in the Midwest, and one in the west, did
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: you have a shot to play a little bit close
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: to home?
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: Craig, you're talking to the guy that had the number
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: one seat in the NCAA tournament, the number two teams
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: in the country, and they sent me to Oregon would
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: played the two seeded Ducks with the best team I
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: ever had, and we got upset as the number one
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: seat having to play Sabrini and escu's number two seeded
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: Ducks in front of thirteen thousand people dressed in green
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: and black. So the thing for me to think that
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: they would do me that let me play here in
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: the South, versus sending me to Spokane, I'll have to
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: believe it, you know, I'll have to see it to
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: believe it. So I'm you know, I just again, we
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: we there's got to be better ways to do it.
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: And again I don't like the whole eight teams at
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: one site trying to get ready to play. I mean,
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: Yukon couldn't even stay in the in the in the
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: their their hotel that they were assigned to the first
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: night they were in town. They had to move hotels
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: after their first night to get to the one that
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: they were assigned to because they mean room for So,
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: you know, it's just I just think there's a better
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: way to do it, but they don't ever ask me.
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: So all I do is show up where they tell
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: me to play.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: Which which we includes, by the way, for folks who
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: don't know, the SEC tournament is in South Carolina's backyard
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: in Greenville, and you've had to deal with that before,
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: Oh for sure.
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's it is what it is. You know,
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: we just show up wherever they tell us to play
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: and try to do the best we can. And you know, Greenville,
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: the city of Greenville does a great job. It's just
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: you know, again, it's three hours from South Carolina's campus
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: to be like me playing in Houston or Dallas and
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: then everybody over there having to come this way and
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: it would affect their fan base and how they traveled.
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: So but it is what it is. I mean, yeah,
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: I'd rather fight the battle of playing on Sundays than
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: fight the battle of getting a sec. You know, tournament changed.
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like playing in Iowa State and Kansas City
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: right last year?
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and and well, I mean we had three uh
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: we beat we beat three home teams. Last year we
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: played Kansas, We played Kansas State and Iowa State back
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: to back to back, beat three. We were the visiting
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: is no question we were the visiting team three straight knights.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: Well, uh, I know you're I know you're going to
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: lock in on on getting ready for Missouri this week.
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: The final thing I wanted to ask is when I
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: when I look at your schedule and I've read that
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: the ranked teams that you still have to play a
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: bunch of ranked teams. And I look in your schedule.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: If people look really really closely, they can see one
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: or two teams that are struggling. Uh, that that you
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: still have to deal with. But but at this time
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: of year, and I think it was evidence the whole
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: miss is a good ball club. But they weren't ranked
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: yesterday when they played your team.
- 1:25:55Speaker 3: Tough.
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: Uh, At this time of year, little of that stuff
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: really even matters in the message that you have to
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: your group about preparing to go out and play. In
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: this case, it'll be Missouri on Thursday ninet at eight
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: o'clock at home.
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I don't if you start worrying about that
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: and you're worried, well, you're thinking whether they or not ranked,
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: or they are ranked, or what their record is. I mean, look,
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: I remember our ninety eight team at Arkansas that went
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: to the Final four. We were seven and four. You
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: only played fourteen SEC games back in that day, and
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: we had to go to Ole miss on Valentine's Day.
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: They were the worst team in the league by far,
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: and we went in there and got beat like thirty five.
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: It was the Valentine's Day massacre. And I remember rolling
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: out of there and with coach Blair, and you know
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: that team would would get We not only lost that
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: when we lost two more to the end the season before,
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: we won one game in the SEC tournament, got beaten
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: the second round, end up having to go out to
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: Stanford to play in that region. It's the only time
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: the number one seed has been beaten on their home floor.
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: And we beat Harvard, they got upset. We beat Harvard
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: to go to the Sweet sixteen, end up going to
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: the Final four with that team. But it's just you know,
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: you start worrying and thinking that way. Look, I know,
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: I know Missouri a tremendous amount of respect for that
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: coach in that program. They are well coached. They will
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: be coached up on Thursday night and we'll play hard,
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: have a great plan, and we better have a good plan.
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: Too, And you want to have a good crowd too
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: on Thursday.
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, we're it's eight o'clock game because it's
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: on TV, and so you know we're not you know,
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: it's eight at nine on Thursday night, so that'll be
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: hopefully not too challenging. Everybody maybe needs to take a
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: nap where they come to the game but it is
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: a late tip, but we certainly need our crier. Crowd
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: has been so special and really created an incredible home
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: court advantage for our players. And this team's special. This
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: team's fun, They're fun to watch, they play the game
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: the right way. We have we have some really special
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: kids on this team. We have some special talented kids
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: that you better not take for granted. And I know
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: you know me as a coach, I know that, but
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: sometimes as fans, you don't realize, you know what, Kevin
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: Durant ain't just coming around every other year, right. Uh,
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: you better better realize that we've got some some some
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: really special players on our team, and you better understand
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: that they're they're doing a heck of a job and
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: and you need to enjoy them while they're here, you know.
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: And uh, you know again, Rory Harmon's already had six
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: hundred assists. She's gonna end up being the all time
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: assist player in the history of University of Texas. Booker's
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: fixing to score her thousand point in a few games here.
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: She's fifty point shy of her one thousand point as
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: just a young sophomore, She's got a chance. She will
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: she'll go down in history, is one of the all
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: time greats, if not the greatest, in the history of
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: Texas when it was basketball. And so you know, we've
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: got some really I mean, Tyler Jones is playing at
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: an incredible level right now, really doing a great job
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: for She's getting the attention of a lot of people
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: at that next level right now. But the biggest thing
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: is she's showing a lot of toughness. She's showing them
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: their ability to be physical down there because she is
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: getting worn out, pounded on down there, and she just
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: keeps on fighting. So we've got some really, really good
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: players playing at a really high level. But they're special
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: and you don't want to take them for granted.
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: No doubt about it. Next opportunity Thursday night at Moody
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: at eight o'clock. Hope to see everybody out there, Vic.
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: I appreciate the time. I'll look forward to seeing you
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: on Thursday. Thanks for joining us today well as always.
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: Craig, appreciate the opportunity, appreciate all you do for all
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: right athletic department here at the University of Texas and
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: especially being there for women's basketball. So thanks for having
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: me on you'all have a great day. Raise the Lord Hugamorns.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: Thanks Vic. That is Texas women's head coach Vick Schaeffer
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: is team number five in the country now twenty and two,
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: six and one in the SEC. And the Missouri Tigers
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: will be in Thursday night eight o'clock. You can hear
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: that also on one oh three point one FM, Austin's
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: eighties station, coming your way beginning at seven forty five.
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: More coming up here on AM thirteen under the Zone.
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: We're back.
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: and voice of the Texas Longheards Craig Way.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: All right, thanks again the Texas women's head coach Vic
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: Shaeffer joining us there. That log warns take on the
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: Missouri Tigers on Thursday. I mentioned that they had three
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: games in six days. Two were on the road, one
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: was a neutral site. That was the one in Newark,
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: New Jersey, a week ago today. Then they had the
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: home game against Tennessee. Then they were back on the
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: road against Ole, miss They'll be home Thursday night and
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: that contest against Missouri at eight o'clock, and then they're
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: back on the road again. And I didn't even get
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: a chance to ask Bick about this. He probably wouldn't
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: have wanted to talk about it. Anyway. He's got his
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: team dialed in on getting ready for Missouri. But next
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: Sunday they're in College Station. They'll play Texas A and M.
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: And of course Vic has been a good part of
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: his developmental coaching career and experience working under Gary Blair.
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: They won a national championship there in twenty eleven. He
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: talked about the nineteen ninety eight Final fourteen they head
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: at Arkansas, but then at A and M they won
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: a national title in twenty eleven. So Vick was well liked,
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: and of course he is an alumnus of Texas A
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: and M. They'll play there Sunday afternoon at five o'clock
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: on that then they come back home to play Vanderbilts
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: and South Carolina back to back home games, and then
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: they've got at Kentucky LSU at home at Georgia, at
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: Mississippi State, and then conclude the regular season with Florida,
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: And really and truly, out of all of those remaining games,
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: there's really only two that you look at and say, yeah,
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: that's a team struggling that they're going to play one
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: of them's this week, Missouri. The other one is the
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: final game of the regular season against Florida. Every other
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: team is either ranked or tough to beat on their
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: home floor, like in the case of both Georgia and
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: Misissippi State, And then of course Vanderbilt is ranked A
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: and M rivalry gain South Carolina number two as we know,
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: and Kentucky, I think is twelve, and LSU is number
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: three in the countries or number five now in the country,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: depending on which pole you're looking at. So anyway, tough
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: assignments there for Texas the rest of the way, but
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: they look really good right now twenty and two and
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: six and one in the SEC, tied for second place.
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up today's program here on
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the Zone
