- 0:00I'm going to regret this. Welcome to the note party. Hi. This
- 0:08is Nick and Astasu, story editor on Star Wars, the Clone Wars and
- 0:12Star Wars bad Batch and you are listening to Aggressive Negotiations bo Shoota and welcome
- 0:23back to Aggressive Negotiations the Star Wars podcast. That's going to take you on
- 0:28a special ride as we try something a little fresh, a little new,
- 0:31something where we're plumbing hyperspace and finding new routes. Roots. How do you
- 0:36pronounce it? You know what? I'm here with a pronunciation specialist, Jedi
- 0:41Master, Matthew Rushing. Matt the word r o U te? How do
- 0:47you pronounce that word? Like? I took a root sixty six? Is
- 0:51it root sixty six? Round sixty six? That's Does it just depend on
- 0:56the moment, Yeah, it depends on the moment. It's kind of like
- 1:00is it pirates of the Caribbean or to the Caribbean? You know, it
- 1:03almost just depends on what you're talking about. I don't know. Well,
- 1:06I mean, you got weird. Well, I mean the thing is,
- 1:07I consider that authoritatively, you know, Billy Oshan saying Caribbean queen. So
- 1:12you know, now we're sharing the same dream, and the dream is for
- 1:15people to go on over to Apple Podcasts and drop us a star rating and
- 1:19review if they haven't yet, we would be your bestest Jedi friends in the
- 1:23world if you did. And of course you can find us on Twitter at
- 1:29the Jedi Masters, and you can find this fine nerd party network at Joint
- 1:32nerd Party or the Nerd Party on Facebook and Instagram. And someday, someday
- 1:38we will have a TikTok dance and we'll unveil it for you. So today's
- 1:42episode is gonna be a little bit different. We're gonna have a little bit
- 1:46of fun. We all know that we love to surprise each other with topics,
- 1:49so we're gonna start off with a surprise topic. We'll see where this
- 1:52goes. This is gonna be a Pote Parrie star Wars popte Parrie episode.
- 1:56And you know it's funny you say smell because that's actually the first thing that
- 2:01was knocking around in our brain. Okay, oh no, all right,
- 2:05so Empire strikes back. Let me set the scene. Luke shows up at
- 2:08at Cloud City and he's going along and he's all being sneaky. He's going
- 2:14through and everything, but Boba Fett seems to know he's there right right,
- 2:17Boba Fet like even looks over in his direction and everything. They're walking through
- 2:20the hall, and it suddenly dawned on me as I was, you know,
- 2:24coming off of a jog. Luke had just spent some amount of time
- 2:30with no indoor plumbing, no shower. This is very true. And on
- 2:35Daegoba for you know, hover long training, getting sweaty, all of that
- 2:39stuff. Do you think it's possible Boba Fet just smelled him? You know,
- 2:45I think it's absolutely the case, because you know, we don't really
- 2:49think about this in Star Wars, but the weirdest thing about Star Wars is
- 2:53how people seem to wear the same clothes every single day and never washed them.
- 3:00And so either it's the thing where they just literally go in and you
- 3:04look in their closet and it's the same outfit hanging out. Yeah, it's
- 3:07like Homer Simpson. Yeah. Otherwise, although the one we know that doesn't
- 3:12happen is Lando because we've seen his closet. Everybody else it's like they never
- 3:16change clothes, and so that's true. I think I think it's a great
- 3:23question because it really does I think that That's one of the things that you
- 3:30know, in some ways was really helpful about the prequel trilogy was the way
- 3:38in which you see all of the costume changes that Padmey has, you know,
- 3:44and you know, all the characters, they're never really wearing the same
- 3:46clothes twice, except for characters like the Jedi, where they legitimately only have
- 3:53you know, they have their set of robes, and those robes it seems
- 3:57like, you know, they have certain colors that they seem to pay out
- 4:00and then that's their outfit, right and and they rarely kind of change out
- 4:05of that unless they're in a place where you know, you need like cold
- 4:13weather gear or something like that. Otherwise, for the most part, they're
- 4:16i mean, they're all wearing you know, Jedi wear the same things,
- 4:19but everybody else, you know, it's more realistic, whereas and I think
- 4:24of, you know, does this bring us to the fact that, you
- 4:26know, during the Imperial rule, you know, are people going without showers
- 4:33longer and stuff because you know they're either on the run or you know,
- 4:40like maybe ships aren't equipped with showers. You know, like the A T
- 4:47Haller was in Solo, you know, where it was just like it's so
- 4:53I don't know, man, this is this is a really interesting question.
- 4:56Well, it's definitely a rabbit hole because it's it's one of those things where
- 4:59you're sort of like, it's as soon as it hit me. On top
- 5:02of that, I was thinking like, well, Yoda was there for years
- 5:04and years, like I hope he dug that pit, you know that he
- 5:08had to use well away from his little hut, you know, just in
- 5:15case company showed up or something like that. Otherwise that was that was some
- 5:18there were some problems there, and probably R two on the on the flight
- 5:23to Cloud City was grateful that he was, you know, outside the cockpit.
- 5:27It's like, I'm good, I'm good, I'm out here. Smell
- 5:29can't travel in space. But then of course my brain keeps working, so
- 5:35that that brings on another question. All right, So Coroiscant is the city
- 5:41planet, right, and this ties into the whole smell and filth thing.
- 5:46It's a city planet. Have you ever been to New York City? Right?
- 5:50Yeah? How does New York City smell? And I don't want any
- 5:56New York people complaining with what we're about to discuss right now, but New
- 5:59York City smells disgusting. Its specifically, yes, in the summer when it's
- 6:02humid and hot there, and that's so I haven't been in there in the
- 6:09summer. I've been there in the fall and the uh much the very early
- 6:14like late winter, early springtime. Uh And so you know, I haven't
- 6:20gotten to experience the beauty of you know, the summer where everything is very
- 6:26humid, very hot, sticky, and of course it stinks when you when
- 6:32you walk out of the Yeah, when you walk out of the train station
- 6:35and you're like, hey, I'm here, and it's like hitting a you
- 6:39know what. It's like song as we're talking about it, it's like going
- 6:42through one of those gungan walls, one of those like shield walls. Oh
- 6:46yeah, you feel like you just passed through this slimy thing and you're like,
- 6:48wait a minute, I'm not I'm not where I'm used to being right
- 6:53here, But okay. So Corroussant is basically New York as a planet.
- 6:58New York smells the way that it, But can you imagine what rain was
- 7:02like for people on the lower levels on coroscont like for moisture to come from
- 7:09up above where there's like breathable atmosphere and everything come pouring down, like we
- 7:15have pollutants fall here on Earth, right, we can see it in ice
- 7:19cores and stuff like that. Can you imagine what rainfall was like for anybody
- 7:24that wasn't on the upper levels in Corocont Like how foul that was? You
- 7:29know? And it leads me to an interesting question when you think about that,
- 7:31because you know so much of what we see in Corossont is there gets
- 7:36to be this point where there is no open sky, like in the sense
- 7:41that you can't see the open sky. Everything is just another city level.
- 7:45And so does that even happen at those levels? And the industrial complex that
- 7:50has to exist to create breathable atmosphere under that many layers of permacrete or whatever
- 7:58they call it, like that has to be some of the that has to
- 8:01be the greatest engineering project of the entire galaxy. Yeah, well, you
- 8:07know the thing is, I remember there was some concept art that I think
- 8:13was first seen in like Star Wars Visions that that little trade paperback that came
- 8:16out back when episode three was around, where there was like a vision of
- 8:20like green Coruscant where it showed the uppermost levels as having like greenery and like
- 8:26the they basically showed that they covered that problem by having like this floating level
- 8:33up above that had like trees and everything, so that there could be some
- 8:35sort of ecosystem. But yeah, I mean, but the thing is,
- 8:41that's a great question. How do they even get oxygen on the planet?
- 8:43Like, how do how do you keep oxygen on the planet if there's no
- 8:48you know, trees, there's no grass, there's there's nothing about this planet
- 8:54that is live. Well, wait a minute, the Jedi had those two
- 8:58trees. Maybe those are just some real great trees. The trees had midichlorian
- 9:01counts that you couldn't really track. Yeah, talk about a force of nature,
- 9:05right those two Yeah, those two trees. Hey see you in the
- 9:11price on this one. Nicely done, nicely done, nicely done. So
- 9:16it just like, you know what, there you go that that's years of
- 9:20podcasting right there. That's what when it just naturally happens, that's that's the
- 9:26moment you're looking for everybody, that's exactly why we do this. But yeah,
- 9:30you know, it's I know you're not supposed to think about it or
- 9:33anything like that, but uh, you know, you're absolutely right, Like
- 9:37with the greenery and everything, I like, in my brain, I'm so
- 9:41glad I saw that, like that green Corusciant concept art so that I could
- 9:46I've applied it in my brain. I'm like, well, we didn't see
- 9:48the dilapidated manufacturing sector until episode two. It was always there, we just
- 9:54didn't see it. We know that we have the top of the mountain,
- 9:58right, that's that's even back in Cannon. Now yeah it is, yep,
- 10:03so that's back in Cannon. So there's got to be When Rick Olliot
- 10:09was is it Oli or Olier? Rick Olier? That the pilot that I
- 10:13think it's like rickole A Lakes, Land of Lakes Margarine, Yes, but
- 10:20actually that on Naboo he is the Margarine king. Oh wouldn't it be great?
- 10:26Yeah? Oh rickle rick ole A but m hmm. Or could it
- 10:30be like oil of ol a hand cream he has like a hand cream brand,
- 10:37and that's he just flies in his spare time, that's what it does.
- 10:43Yes, he's got so much money. He's just like, I need
- 10:48a job, you know, I fly the Queen around. But that's fine.
- 10:50Yeah, we were hanging out one day. She's like, I need
- 10:52a pilot. I'm like, okay, that's fine. He's like, you
- 10:54know what, I know how to fly. I have a lot of listens.
- 10:58I had a lot of time on my hands. I'm recolet you know,
- 11:01you probably use my products. In fact, you know what we I
- 11:03think we send them to you for free, you know, just so that
- 11:05you can get the advertising. Oh that's the like when she has the kabuki
- 11:11makeup on. That's that's how she gets it off at night. You know,
- 11:15that's what keeps her skin looking so good. So Radio nailed it.
- 11:18It's true anyway, Wow, see potpourri. There you go, folks.
- 11:22But like, like in a part of my brain sometimes I go back to
- 11:30it where it's like when he says the whole planet's one giant city, and
- 11:33we're all like, it's one giant city. In my brain, yes,
- 11:39it's quote unquote one giant city. But there is some part of it somewhere
- 11:43that's like undeveloped or reverted back to nature sort of thing. Like if you
- 11:48look at Detroit where like all the factories have broken down, you know,
- 11:52to quote Ian Malcolm from another great sci fi masterpiece, life, Uh finds
- 11:56a way, right, Like, there's got to be sections of it where
- 12:01the greenery has come back with a vengeance. Unnaturally, even where like factories
- 12:07are broken down and all of a sudden there's moss and grass and mutant trees
- 12:13and everything growing. I mean, so the biggest thing is this, Look
- 12:16if the only part at least what we know in Canaon now is the only
- 12:20part of the planet that you can still see, is the top of this
- 12:24the highest mountain that was ever on this planet. Let's conservatively guess that's somewhere
- 12:31between you know, you know, Mount Rainier, which I think is fourteen
- 12:37thousand or something, and then what you got Everest, it's what twenty something
- 12:43thousand, right, I don't know, taller than I'm ever going to be
- 12:46anyway, That's all I go. But I mean, just could just think
- 12:50about the entire planet being covered by and that means that this was also a
- 12:54planet that didn't have major oceans. So you know that this is a good
- 13:00point. You wouldn't have been able to build an entire city plane and if
- 13:03you had, you know, which is another great question of like water and
- 13:09you know, so I mean, the beauty of this is like you said,
- 13:13right, you're not supposed to think about it, but it is just
- 13:16kind of a crazy thought of like how this works. And I think,
- 13:20you know, it's one of those things where, you know, I wish
- 13:24that in some ways, you know, they thought more about you know.
- 13:33I think one of the things that I really appreciate about the and Or series
- 13:37was the way in which, regardless of who the characters were, they don't
- 13:41they weren't all wearing the same thing all the time. It was dependent on
- 13:46what's going on, right, you know, whether they're infiltrating the imperial base
- 13:52there, or of course you've got the senators and their different clothing and you
- 13:56know you've got you know, again, unless you're a part of the military,
- 14:01everybody's wearing something different every day because you don't wear the same things every
- 14:05day for the most part, and so it's just not something that necessarily gets
- 14:11thought about. Part of that, too, is I think, especially when
- 14:13you think of the original trilogy, the storylines that we see take place over
- 14:20pretty condensed time periods, you know, whereas you know, when you get
- 14:24into like the prequels, it's a longer time period. You know, Empire
- 14:28strikes back as a little bit longer in the sense that we don't really have
- 14:31a we don't have a conception of how long Luke is on Degaba, you
- 14:35know, could be done. It's as long as your brain needs are you
- 14:39know? But but whereas you know, Retard of the Jedi all takes place
- 14:43within a few days, you know, so you know, whereas again you
- 14:48get to the Prequels and you're in a you know, a much longer time
- 14:52period, right, And so I think, and each of the movies,
- 15:00right, you're not just taking place over days, but like, you know,
- 15:03maybe a week or two. And then of course you get into the
- 15:05Phone Wars and you're talking about you well, I mean, you and I
- 15:09have gone back and forth about the time the time stuff with like Revenge of
- 15:11the Sith, and I think that it functions just like Empire strikes back.
- 15:16It's as long as your brain needs it to be from beginning to finish,
- 15:20right, sure, sure, it's just My point is is that the prequels
- 15:24themselves, for the most part, tend to to cover a longer period of
- 15:30time. I think than that you have really with the let me ask you
- 15:37this, do you really think Return of the Jedi takes place over the span
- 15:41of just a couple of days. I mean, I'm not challenging it I'm
- 15:46asking. I've never really, I've never really sat down and tried to piece
- 15:50together as like exactly how long did it take? Because the thing is there
- 15:54are gaps that can very easily happen because of course, you know, it's
- 15:56not like all of the planets at the end instantaneous knew that the empire had
- 16:00fallen, right, it took a little bit of time for the news to
- 16:04get all across the galaxy. It's that figurative time thing. And then also,
- 16:10yeah, Luke speeds away and then we transition to the Emperor showing up
- 16:12at the Death Star. But then there's going to be some amount of time
- 16:17before the fleet can gather, and so yeah, I'm guessing you know when
- 16:22you put it like that, and I was just thinking about that that idea,
- 16:23because you know, you get Luke going to visit Yoda and then he
- 16:27comes back and everything, right, you know, it's probably a couple of
- 16:32weeks. Then, you know, when you think about the legitimacy of traveling
- 16:36and you know, like you said the but again too, it's like it
- 16:41it's pretty it just feels I guess it feels more compressed, you know,
- 16:48it feels quicker, just right, here with the way that Lucas whereas you
- 16:52know, I remember always thinking, you know, an empire strikes back,
- 16:55you know it, Yeah, Luke, there's a sense that because even just
- 17:00with the training montages, it's like you can see the way in which Luke
- 17:04is getting more proficient at certain things from you know, when he got there
- 17:11to where you get there, you know, when he's doing the flips and
- 17:15all that kind of stuff, and then he goes into the cave and it's
- 17:18like, yeah, it feels like he's probably been there for a little bit,
- 17:22you know, in your mind doesn't have to have an exact number.
- 17:25So all that I think to say is that, you know, it is
- 17:30fascinating to me the way in which you know these things. And I think,
- 17:37you know we were talking about on the six or two Club Rebel Moon.
- 17:44The genius really I think of Star Wars is that unless you just what
- 17:52are us and you're asking these questions forty some on years later, like your
- 17:59brain doesn't go there when you're watching these films, right, your mind just
- 18:04everything is designed to the point where you accept it and you kind of have
- 18:10an understanding of what it is, you know, Whereas I felt like you
- 18:14know in Rebel Moon that wasn't quite the case. So I'm asking a lot
- 18:18more questions in my mind, what's this? How does know? Where's how
- 18:22does this all fit together? You know? And from story to design elements
- 18:27to everything else. In Star Wars, I think things just seem to fit
- 18:33in a way that your brain does not have to ask those questions. It's
- 18:37just caught up in the the go of the story. If that makes sense,
- 18:42it absolutely makes sense. And that that's one of the things also that
- 18:47I think is frustrating about. And I know I'm opening a cannon worms here,
- 18:56okay, because I don't want to just be like, oh, well,
- 19:00you know the sequels this and this, because the thing is for me.
- 19:03Force Awakens has that in spades up until it just grinds to a halt
- 19:08at Taco Donna like and then it just never really gets its rhythm back.
- 19:12But like all the way up until the Star Killer base fires, that is
- 19:18a tightly put together story. It's exactly the way the first six are where
- 19:23it's like I don't even have a minute to ask myself like, well,
- 19:26what's this? Like I could ask when I walked out, but like boom,
- 19:30it just takes off, right, but Rogue one you and I,
- 19:37I know we disagree about that, but like it's actually inverted because it picks
- 19:41up so much after a certain point that I stop asking those questions. I
- 19:45you know, so like it's a better situation if you will. We're like
- 19:49in the beginning, well, well wait a minute, what about this?
- 19:52What about that? What's going on here? And then it hits a certain
- 19:56point pretty much when Sogerera starts talking with Jin where like all of a sudden,
- 20:00I just don't care anymore. Honestly, it's probably when cheer Ittt shows
- 20:06up, like suddenly I'm I'm sort of like I'm just in the flow of
- 20:10things again. But you know it is it something where? Because Solo definitely
- 20:18recaptured it. Because Solo you could go back and start like hammering at but
- 20:23it goes it's such a speed. And the thing is, how do they
- 20:30make sure that Star Wars captures that again? Right? Like you have to
- 20:36have sort of like a because because I'll even I'll throw Mando season three on
- 20:40the fire there. Mando season three loses the thread at a certain point,
- 20:45and it's like, like, how do you get that that that? Because
- 20:49like bad bad Batch has it in spades. Bad Batches just boom and then
- 20:53you can go back and pick it apart and it still holds up like it's
- 20:59some of the best. Yeah, I was, well, I would just
- 21:02say just the animation in general when it I mean, you know, you
- 21:04get Rebels and Clone Wars and Tales of the Jedi. So it's interesting because
- 21:11you were talking about Mando and and I got the four K discs and I
- 21:15just popped in the first episode just to kind of and I haven't gotten to
- 21:19watch past that of the original season, and that original episode has that in
- 21:26spades, right, you just go and like it knows when to slow down
- 21:30a little bit when you when you get to Queel's uh, you know farm,
- 21:36and he learns to ride the Blurg right the Blurg and and so you
- 21:45know, I think there's something. I mean that episode, you know,
- 21:49you start with him just walking into the CD bar and the shot when he
- 21:56walks in it, like everything about it just captures the essence of a Western
- 22:02right, which is a motif to which so many of us are familiar with.
- 22:07And I think maybe that's what it is. When Star Wars is at
- 22:11its best, it's capturing a genre and by setting you in that genre,
- 22:19but within Star Wars, you don't have to ask questions because your brain fills
- 22:25in the gaps, right. And again, this is I think the difference
- 22:29between this and something like, you know, a rebel move. I'm not
- 22:37just within a specific genre with that, because it feels like a lot of
- 22:42different genres crammed together and it depends on which scene you're in to what genre
- 22:49you might be. Whereas you know, Star Wars, it was like the
- 22:56original films were the serials, and then the the other three were serials,
- 23:02you know, and then it's like the Clone Wars pick up on this idea
- 23:04of Okay, now we're doing shorter episodes that are going to be based on
- 23:12serials, but they're also going to be based on different genres. And then
- 23:15you had Manda Morinan pick up the whole idea of like we're legit just going
- 23:22to be the Western version of Star Wars, and you know, it's like,
- 23:26I think that might be one of the keys to making a good Star
- 23:30Wars thing. It's like you have to pick your genre and run with it.
- 23:33Because again, Solo runs with that, right, because it's it's the
- 23:38gangster movie. You know, we all have an understanding of like the gangster
- 23:41thing. I think, you know, rogue one gets it because it's kind
- 23:49of the war spy movie. And maybe that's one of the things where you
- 23:55don't connect with it as much because at the beginning of the movie it's a
- 23:57little bit more like a spy movie, and it kind of throws itself into
- 24:00a war movie fully by the end. And so I don't know. I
- 24:06guess let's not reprosecute this argument. I mean, you're still wrong on it,
- 24:10but it's not. I'm just I'm just wondering if that's the case because
- 24:14they are kind of mixing to John Listen, I'm not trying to have that
- 24:18fight because you kept talking about cereals and my brain just goes, you know,
- 24:23somebody still has the recipe for c three pos. Why hasn't Disney re
- 24:29released that? You know, what about the cereal and and or they literally
- 24:33have cereal? Why didn't you make that? I'm a big cereal fan too,
- 24:37See I am too. I love Cereal like Lucky Charms. Come on,
- 24:41come on, like seriously, whatever happened to that? Like there was
- 24:45Batman cereal, there was Star Wars serial they did have Mando Cereal. I
- 24:48have the box they did. They Yeah, they brought out Mando Cereal when
- 24:52it first came out, and it is actually good. It was like I
- 24:56can't. It was a combination of lucky charm and like kicks. It was
- 25:02actually pretty good for a cereal based off a show which most of those tend
- 25:07to suck. This was actually good. You know, my memory of C
- 25:11three pos was not particularly enjoying them. And I can promise you that Batman
- 25:18Cereal I have a vague memory of it. It was sort of like,
- 25:25well, let's just say that I have a preserved box of it. If
- 25:30the Armygeddon never happens, I'm going to crack it open, because why the
- 25:33hell not. It was made by Ralston, the dog food manufacturer. So
- 25:40oh so you know it's good. They were try well, they know they
- 25:42know something about mass production there, Matt and Dry Cereal, so kind of
- 25:48kind of a natural fit with real seafood bits. You know, hey,
- 25:55black Bar Cereal, your taste buds can't repel flavor, dude. Oh man,
