- 0:04Hey everybody, this is Corey, this is the Daily Ripple, it's May 15th, peace through knowing
- 0:10God.
- 0:11The Stone, resentment clouds the heart and disrupts peace.
- 0:14When I hold on to it, I distance myself from the very presence that brings clarity and rest.
- 0:21Ripple One: Practical.
- 0:23Today I will notice where resentment is taking root.
- 0:26I will not justify holding on to it.
- 0:28Instead, I will bring it into the open and begin the process of releasing it, even if
- 0:34it only in small steps. Ripple Two: spiritual.
- 0:37The more I know the Father, the more peace settles within me.
- 0:42As I follow Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to work in my heart, resentment loses its grip.
- 0:48Peace is not something I manufacture.
- 0:52It is something I receive as I draw near to God.
- 0:57But it says, resentment clouds the heart and disrupts peace.
- 1:01And I think, for me, someone like me had always just done that.
- 1:05And I saw this topic, and I decided I was going to take a little deep dive into it.
- 1:15So if you're part of this program, of any of the programs that use the Book of Alcoholics Anonymous,
- 1:23page 65 is a good place to start.
- 1:26in the big book.
- 1:27And it,
- 1:28because it gives me this example
- 1:31and it tells me how I do it.
- 1:32It says, Mr. Brown,
- 1:34I'm resentful at Mr. Brown.
- 1:36The cause,
- 1:37well, his attention to my wife,
- 1:40he told my wife of my mistress.
- 1:43Then Brown may get my job at the office.
- 1:48And then it goes on to the right
- 1:49of how it affects my self-esteem
- 1:52and this and this and this and this.
- 1:53But then on down, it talks about this guy's also resentful at his wife.
- 2:00Well, his wife misunderstands and nags.
- 2:04She likes Brown and wants house put in her name.
- 2:10And these are just resentments.
- 2:11And, you know, it tells me I got to get, you know, tells me I have to master these.
- 2:16And it tells me a life, I can't be angry about these.
- 2:19Well, how would I not be angry about Mr. Brown told my wife and my mistress?
- 2:26Well, that's like the bro code.
- 2:28His attention to my wife.
- 2:29So Brown has attention to my wife.
- 2:32Brown may get my job at the office.
- 2:34My wife likes Brown and wants to put the house in her name.
- 2:39So I think about that and I think, well, as someone like me, I'm viewing it like Brown's
- 2:48moving into my house. He's sleeping with my wife. And Brown's getting my job. That's crazy.
- 2:58Like Brown is taking over my life. And, but the thing is, when I flip the page on page 66,
- 3:05it tells me I have to be free of anger. The grouch of the brainstorm were not for us.
- 3:11They may be the dubious luxuries of normal men, but for the alcoholic, these things are poison.
- 3:17Then it goes on to say I have to master these, and, you know, mastering has full knowledge.
- 3:22When I look back at some, I wanted to pull out, you know, I wanted to pull up some old things, but, you know, when I go back and look at the things I've done to others, you know, it's usually, you know, I usually put myself in a place of fear coming into a relationship.
- 3:42Frightened, they might know who I really am, so I lie about who I am.
- 3:49You know, just time and time again, it comes back to me.
- 3:56But when I go further in here, it says,
- 3:58we found that it is fatal for harboring such feelings.
- 4:01We shut ourselves off from the sunlight of the Spirit.
- 4:03So, you know, I like the way Michael, he put this in here.
- 4:07You know, I distance myself from the very presence that brings clarity and rest.
- 4:11to me, that'd be God. So if God brings me clarity and rest and these resentments hold me back from
- 4:16God, well, to me, you know, and the only way I can do this sobriety thing, or I mean, you know,
- 4:25go to like normal life, you know, for me, like, you know, how cool it is to have this power and
- 4:31to be able to have, feel this presence of this power in my life. So I think about what I got to do,
- 4:36Like, you know, tell me what I, this book tells me exactly what I have to do.
- 4:41Then he goes on to say, I really like this one today.
- 4:45He put, I will not justify holding on to it.
- 4:48So I don't get to justify it.
- 4:50Huh.
- 4:52Well, I've justified holding on to all these things for a long time.
- 4:57My birth mother, you know, I had this thing where, you know, I felt, you know, she had kind of abandoned me.
- 5:04That it took me a lot of years of maturity and, you know, even going through this process to say, you know, man, she did the best she could with what she had.
- 5:15And it was lucky, like, you know, I'm here today.
- 5:20It's only by God that I'm here today, really.
- 5:22And then it goes on to say, I will bring it into the open and begin the process.
- 5:26And I'll bring it into the open.
- 5:28So bringing it into the open, I would, it kind of sounds like on page 84.
- 5:34And page 84 says, continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear.
- 5:41When these crop up, we ask God at once to remove them.
- 5:45We discuss them with someone immediately.
- 5:48So that'd be bringing in the open, I imagine, and going through the process.
- 5:52Well, the process also tells me, make amends quickly if we've harmed anyone.
- 5:58Because really what it is, and you know, this is cool because this book tells me pretty much everything about me.
- 6:07It says on page 64 of the big book, first we searched out the flaws in our makeup, which caused our failure.
- 6:17So maybe I'm inadequate.
- 6:20And I kind of, when I look at this and I think about a resentment and maybe had an ex or something, you know, I really like to point the finger at them.
- 6:27I really like to say, you know, they did this, they left me, and it affected this, this, this, and this.
- 6:38Well, what did I do to them?
- 6:42Maybe I probably wasn't good enough for them.
- 6:46And so really I resent fault myself, but I want to point the finger at them.
- 6:50Or maybe I had some things that I still was going through in my life, and I wasn't, you know, in a position.
- 6:57But I can't blame me for some reason because the house always wins, right?
- 7:03If the house always wins, it is that attitude never lets me be free of this.
- 7:11And if I got to change my attitude, and this book tells me, I think, in 25 different places,
- 7:16it says the word attitude.
- 7:18And then it says in 27 different places, the word recovered.
- 7:22So attitude and recovered are two things I think go hand in hand.
- 7:27So when I go through my life, you know, how do I do this?
- 7:30And I was doing my morning meditation thing today,
- 7:34and I was looking, you know, and I've done this before,
- 7:37but when it says continue to watch,
- 7:42continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear,
- 7:46because over here it says, holding on to it,
- 7:52the more I know the Father, the more peace settles within me,
- 7:56Oh, the Holy Spirit to work in my heart.
- 7:58Resentment loses this grip.
- 8:01But what about when resentment comes up today?
- 8:05And I go, because usually I play the whole tape through for me.
- 8:09It's nine times out of 10, I play the whole tape through.
- 8:12So what happens is the resentment comes.
- 8:16I act sometimes maturely and spiritually with it, but sometimes I don't.
- 8:22Sometimes I got to go through the whole process.
- 8:25And I think the whole process starts around the third step.
- 8:29Am I willing to give this over to God?
- 8:30My will and my thoughts, my life and my actions.
- 8:35Will, thoughts, life, action.
- 8:38But am I willing to give all this over?
- 8:41And then I inventory it because for some reason, I don't know why it is for me,
- 8:46but maybe that process is the only thing that I've found that helps me be free of it.
- 8:51But it doesn't just stop at the fourth step.
- 8:55because the house cleaning steps in the program is 4 through 9.
- 9:01And, you know, I'd like to not, because I don't think, you know,
- 9:07that's not what I don't think.
- 9:08You know, I was sitting in a thing the other day,
- 9:12and they were talking about the maintenance steps,
- 9:14and I'm not going to get on this big tangent about this,
- 9:17but, you know, I don't believe that 10 and 11 and 12 are maintenance steps
- 9:23because on page 84, it says our next function is to grow in understanding and effectiveness.
- 9:29So that doesn't really look like I'm maintaining.
- 9:31It looks like I'm growing.
- 9:35But anyways, so like when I think about maintenance, you know,
- 9:39or not maintenance, when I think about this, the personal house cleaning,
- 9:43and if it only starts at 4, well, then 5, then 6 and 7, then 8 and 9.
- 9:50You know, I can't, I don't know if I'm always going to get free of this stuff just at the step four.
- 9:56You know, and that's kind of like if my sponsor likes to talk about making a cake, baking a cake.
- 10:02What if I just put the eggs and the flour and those ingredients in a bowl?
- 10:10Well, and I'm trying to make a cake, but I just stop at the first step.
- 10:14I don't think I'm going to get anywhere.
- 10:16I got, well, you could get, you know, obviously you got some, you know, you got some cake batter.
- 10:23But I'm not going to bake a cake.
- 10:26I'm just going to have cake batter.
- 10:28And if I got to go through this process, there's a process,
- 10:30and I believe in the process.
- 10:32And the process tells me I do this, this, this, this, and this in this order.
- 10:38But Corey thinks that, you know, usually what my ego tells me is,
- 10:43oh, I don't have to do that anymore.
- 10:45Oh, you know, I just have to do this.
- 10:49And, you know, I'm spiritual, Corey, today.
- 10:51And I did my prayer, meditation, and this and this.
- 10:55And so this is really cool because it says,
- 10:59the more I know the Father, so the more peace salvage that's within me.
- 11:04And we've been talking about this a lot.
- 11:09And it says on page 75 of the big book, on the last paragraph,
- 11:15It says, we thank God from the bottom of our heart that we know Him better.
- 11:20That's after the fifth step.
- 11:23So after the fifth step, why would I know God better?
- 11:25Because I just found out some truth.
- 11:27And maybe God is truth.
- 11:29Maybe God is love.
- 11:30Maybe God is everything.
- 11:31And I think we talk about this a lot, but on page 53 of the big book, it says,
- 11:36When we became Alcoholics, crushed by a self-imposed crisis, we could not postpone or evade.
- 11:41we had to fearlessly face the proposition that either God is everything or God is nothing.
- 11:48The more and more this process of my life evolves,
- 11:53the more and more I find that God is everything,
- 11:56and God is more than everything that I could have ever imagined.
- 12:02So when I look at that, and this thing's evolving, and it's coming up,
- 12:06and I'm knowing more truth, and it's getting me to more of this one person,
- 12:11I find so much.
- 12:13You know, maybe we're not looking at, this is not a self, I mean, to me, it's not a self-help thing.
- 12:18I think you can go into the proposition that maybe God is nothing and go in this as a book study of just words in a process.
- 12:27And maybe through that process, you find a higher power of your own understanding.
- 12:33That's kind of what I did as well.
- 12:37And page 145 of the big book, this is cool, because it says,
- 12:41The greatest enemies of us alcoholics are resentment, jealousy, envy, frustration, and fear.
- 12:51Jealousy, you know, that's a corroding thing in my life.
- 12:54You know, I can get, man, I don't know about you guys, but like I get jealous, envious.
- 13:02And those are those things that just really block.
- 13:06I mean, it disrupts my life.
- 13:10It puts me on this, like, roller coaster.
- 13:12And, you know, normally if I do that, that stuff happens.
- 13:15I got to just sit down, be quiet.
- 13:19And usually an intuitive thought comes to my head, like, hey, call somebody and check on their day.
- 13:24Because I don't want to disrupt anybody else's life because of what I'm thinking in my mind that's usually not true.
- 13:34In Proverbs chapter 15, verse 1, it says,
- 13:43A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
- 13:49The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.
- 13:55The eyes of the Lord are everywhere. Keep watching on the wicked and the good.
- 14:00The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.
- 14:08It is amazing when I get angry.
- 14:10Me and my significant other, we were going out to eat.
- 14:16It was so funny because we were going out and I got these crocs that are like loafers,
- 14:22but they look nice, but they're really not nice.
- 14:24And they're like $5 or whatever, but I think that they can pass as nice shoes.
- 14:30And so I'm sitting there and I put my shoes on and she looks at me and she goes, I said, you know, are these going to be okay to wear?
- 14:39And she's like, you know, it's not like we're going to a nice restaurant.
- 14:43And so immediately I didn't take it as like, you know, I didn't take that as sarcasm.
- 14:49I took that as like, hey, she's not, she's talking down to me about where I'm taking her out to eat.
- 14:57And that put me in a spirit of anger, put me in the spirit of, you know, maybe I'm not doing good enough for her.
- 15:03Maybe I'm, you know, inadequate.
- 15:07And immediately I get this, like, these feelings and this anger, you know.
- 15:12But, you know, and I'm really glad she was in a spiritually fit place that day because she, you know, we talked about it and she told me what she meant.
- 15:21But, you know, I was like, you know, this place isn't good enough.
- 15:25Well, what if she hadn't been in a good place, right?
- 15:28And both of us just go down this tornado of saying this and saying this and saying this.
- 15:35And it doesn't happen that way.
- 15:36And that sometimes happens.
- 15:40Because just somebody says one thing, and it makes me not feel good enough.
- 15:45So immediately after I don't feel good enough, I got to make sure.
- 15:49And maybe I say something to make them feel worse.
- 15:53On page 104 and 105 in the 12 and 12 of Alcoholics Anonymous, it says, we discover that we do
- 15:59receive guidance for our lives to just about the extent we stop making demands upon God.
- 16:04Demands upon God would be demands upon other people, too, because if God is everything,
- 16:08then God is other people.
- 16:10So maybe I need to quit making demands on other people.
- 16:12And then it says to give it to us on order in our terms.
- 16:16Almost any experienced AA will tell how his affairs have taken remarkable and unexpected turns for the better when he tried to improve his conscious contact with God.
- 16:26He will also report that out of every season of grief or suffering,
- 16:31when the hand of God seemed heavy or even unjust,
- 16:35new lessons for living were learned.
- 16:38But, you know, so I say this seven-step prayer every morning.
- 16:43The seven-step prayer says,
- 16:44My creator, I'm now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad.
- 16:49I pray that you remove every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows.
- 16:55Grant me strength as I go out from here to do your bidding.
- 16:58But what was wild was I was sitting there with a guy, we were doing the prayer, and I forgot some of the words.
- 17:06And I just said something on the fact of, help me be more of love.
- 17:13And then I kept on going through the prayer.
- 17:14And what a weird deal because, you know, he was just telling me how angry he was.
- 17:21And, you know, I maybe, you know, but I found that God works in ways that I can't even describe.
- 17:31I can't comprehend how God works.
- 17:33And who could, right?
- 17:35And that was the weird thing is I've tried to for a long time in my life.
- 17:38I tried to explain the Supreme Being.
- 17:43understand the Supreme Being, but if I'm not the Supreme Being, how am I going to understand it?
- 17:51And we're going to wrap this thing up here pretty soon, but I was thinking about this this morning.
- 17:58So this is talking, and this kind of goes back to what I was just saying, but this is on page 46 of the big book.
- 18:03It says, we looked askance at many individuals who claim to be godly.
- 18:10How could a Supreme Being have anything to do with it all?
- 18:13and who could comprehend a supreme being anyhow.
- 18:17Yet in other moments, we found ourselves thinking
- 18:19when enchanted by a starlit night,
- 18:21who then made all this?
- 18:24There was a feeling of awe and wonder,
- 18:26but it was fleeting and soon lost.
- 18:28And I think about that fleeting feeling,
- 18:31you know, and as it's things today are fleeting.
- 18:34And, but I got this thing in my head that is very,
- 18:40it's heavier than it is fleeting today.
- 18:44it is the process of wrong and right.
- 18:48And if I'm treating people right
- 18:50to my best ability during my day
- 18:53and staying on track with that,
- 18:57and, you know, I mean,
- 18:58I don't do it perfectly,
- 18:59and usually page 84 is a good example
- 19:02of I got to go back and make amends
- 19:03when I mess up,
- 19:04just like I did messed up yesterday
- 19:06with going out to eat.
- 19:09Just like the other day, you know,
- 19:10So I judged this person and did this and put me in a little spiral.
- 19:17But I had to practice this.
- 19:19And if I don't practice this, I'll tell you in my own experience what happened after being sober for a little while is I quit doing this.
- 19:29Then I quit doing this.
- 19:31And then I slept around over here.
- 19:34And I started lying over here.
- 19:38And my wife became I, I, I, I, I.
- 19:46And I found that it's not about me.
- 19:49Because my whole life's been about me.
- 19:51And so today I make it about you.
- 19:55I try to.
- 19:56It's still about me.
- 19:57But I try my best to try to help others and get out of me.
- 20:03Because if I don't get out of me and I stay in this world,
- 20:07And I don't know about people on here that listen to this, that don't listen to this.
- 20:12I don't know.
- 20:12But I know me, if I wasn't free of some of these things, I would not have the ability to go up in my mind and think about things.
- 20:22Go hang out up there.
- 20:23Because I used to not be able to.
- 20:26And I don't play well with others.
- 20:29But today I do.
- 20:30I'm able to because I'm not able to...
- 20:32I don't get as angry as quick.
- 20:34Sometimes.
- 20:38And I'm able to understand that, you know, I'm not here for me.
- 20:42I'm here for you.
- 20:44So I'm going to end this with a prayer.
- 20:46And so it says prayer, Father, draw me closer to You.
- 20:50Through Your Spirit, remove the resentment within me and lead me into peace that comes
- 20:55from walking in the way of Your Son.
- 20:58Amen.
- 21:03And we're not bringing up any arguments while Michael is not here to defend himself, so don't worry...
