- 0:00In today's modern societies, people expect instant results.
- 0:05They want things to be fast and easy.
- 0:09They respond to ads claiming they can lose weight easily in a
- 0:12few days time. They want deliveries from stores
- 0:16to be overnight if not same day. They would prefer to receive
- 0:21their enlightenment from a pill. In many cases, we hear people
- 0:26who indicate that they tried meditation or hata yoga but got
- 0:30nothing out of it. When pressed, they will admit to
- 0:33trying it for a few brief sessions on and off.
- 0:38When it comes to the adoption of spiritual practice, then it is
- 0:41easy to understand the frustration they feel when their
- 0:45weaknesses and limitations don't easily disappear and they are
- 0:49unable to have headline experiences right away.
- 0:54Certainly they do not appreciate the patience of the young seeker
- 0:58of ancient times in India who approached a teacher and asked
- 1:02to become his disciple to learn about the Eternal.
- 1:07The teacher gave him to cattle and told him to take them into
- 1:10the forest and return. When they had multiplied to
- 1:141000, the would be student went off and spent years working on
- 1:20the task, learning how to find food for himself and the cattle,
- 1:24ward off diseases and predators, and otherwise dealing with the
- 1:29weather and other circumstances that could potentially disrupt
- 1:34the process. Eventually, after a number of
- 1:38years of efforts in this direction, he returned to the
- 1:41teacher with a herd of 1000 cattle.
- 1:46The teacher recognized that this student had along the way
- 1:51learned from the sun, the moon, the forest, the river, the
- 1:56animals, and had indeed achieved enlightened status.
- 2:02The teacher vacated his seat and invited the student to become
- 2:07the teacher. What we do not generally heed is
- 2:12the long history and embedded traits that have developed
- 2:15within humanity, in our individual being, and in our
- 2:20societal setting, which by virtue of their deeply rooted
- 2:24nature and their long repetition, have become habits
- 2:29or ways of responding that are not so easily changed or
- 2:32dislodged if it is taken many thousands of years of
- 2:37development for these habitual patterns to.
- 2:40Develop how long? Do we expect it will take to
- 2:44modify them sufficiently that we?
- 2:46Can. Say that.
- 2:47We have outgrown or gone beyond them.
- 2:51By nature, we tend to be conservative.
- 2:53Following and abiding by the thoughts.
- 2:56Feelings and. Ways of acting developed in the
- 2:59past it is this resistance to change which.
- 3:04Confronts the. Yogic Practitioner.
- 3:06When he seriously begins. The quest to transform the
- 3:09nature of his being. Sri Aurobindo.
- 3:13Points out that even in nature change occurs, but it can take
- 3:18thousands of years to work itself out.
- 3:21In the meantime, the habits and atavistic behaviours assert
- 3:26themselves. And reappear.
- 3:29At any instance, the challenge then is whether this process of
- 3:34change can be aided and speeded up by some means.
- 3:38It is through the focused practice of yoga with patience
- 3:42and persistence. The Trioral.
- 3:45Bindu advises that the conscious participation of the.
- 3:48Seeker. Can truncate the time.
- 3:50Needed. This does not mean that it is
- 3:54fast or easy within the context of an individual's lifetime, but
- 4:01that what otherwise might take thousands of years may be
- 4:04brought down to a span of decades potentially.
- 4:07When the individual focuses the aspiration and shifts his
- 4:12standpoint to the divine consciousness, when he calls
- 4:15down the higher spiritual force and opens his being with
- 4:20receptivity, when he steadfastly supports the change despite the
- 4:25pressure of the past habits and the pressure of the society
- 4:29around him, he is able to undertake what may otherwise
- 4:33seem like a waste of time. Sri Aurobindo writes.
- 4:39Quote One must not be distressed or depressed by perceiving the
- 4:44weaknesses inherent in human nature and the difficulty of
- 4:48getting them out. The difficulty is natural, for
- 4:52they have been there for thousands of lives, and are the
- 4:55very nature of man's vital and mental ignorance.
- 4:59It is not surprising that they should have a power to stick and
- 5:03take time to disappear. But there is a true being and a
- 5:08true consciousness that is there in US, hidden by the surface
- 5:12formations of nature, and which can shake them off once it
- 5:17emerges, by taking the right attitude of selfless devotion
- 5:21within and persisting in it in spite of the surface nature's
- 5:26troublesome self repetitions enables.
- 5:30This inner. Being and Consciousness to
- 5:32emerge, and with the Mother's force working in it, deliver the
- 5:38being from all. Return of the movements of the
- 5:42old nature. End Quote.
