- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 146, Psalm
- 0:20146. This Psalm is a little bit
- 0:24shorter. It's only 10 verses.
- 0:26So let's dive right into it and see what the Lord has for us
- 0:29today. Verse #1 Hallelujah my soul
- 0:34praise Yahweh. I will praise Yahweh all my
- 0:37life. I will sing to my God as long as
- 0:41I live. Do not trust in nobles and a son
- 0:45of man who cannot save. When his breath leaves him, he
- 0:48returns to the ground. On that day His plans die.
- 0:53Happy is the one whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is
- 0:57in Yahweh, His God, the maker of heaven and earth, the sea and
- 1:02everything in them. He remains faithful, forever
- 1:06executing justice for the exploited and giving food to the
- 1:10hungry. Yahweh frees prisoners.
- 1:12Yahweh opens the eyes of the blind.
- 1:15Yahweh raises up those who are oppressed.
- 1:18Yahweh loves the righteous. Yahweh protects resident aliens
- 1:23and helps the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the way
- 1:27of the wicked. Yahweh reigns forever.
- 1:30Zion, your God reigns for all generations.
- 1:35Hallelujah. Well, we'll see how much trouble
- 1:39I get into in this one. Verses 1 and 2.
- 1:43As with many of these psalms, there's just a start off of God.
- 1:47Like praise. You hear my soul my, my
- 1:50innermost being, God praise or sorry, my innermost being ought
- 1:54to praise God. He says.
- 1:56I will praise you all way all my life.
- 1:59I will sing to my God as long as I live.
- 2:03I mention it many, many times. I'll keep on mentioning it as
- 2:06long as Scripture does. We ought to sing to the Lord.
- 2:11Whether it is in your private time with the Lord, and maybe
- 2:15you might not sing aloud, but in your heart you would be singing.
- 2:17You would be listening to some music that would be praising the
- 2:20Lord. That would be a great thing to
- 2:22do. I've actually linked a song that
- 2:25is written from Psalm 146 by the group The Corner Room, and you
- 2:30can listen to that and that would be a great thing for you
- 2:33to do. You can be praising the Lord
- 2:35with your song. You can be singing to Him even
- 2:38within your own heart and that would be a wonderful thing to
- 2:41do. When there comes comes time for
- 2:45corporate together praising and singing to the Lord.
- 2:49Take advantage of that time and if you can sing out at the top
- 2:54of your lungs, if maybe that wouldn't be as great of a plan
- 2:58for you to sing at the top of your lungs.
- 3:00Sing, sing and know that you are glorifying your God as you are
- 3:05doing so. Then verses 3 and 4, the
- 3:10parallel here between God, who is worthy to be praised, who is
- 3:14great, who's worthy of lifelong devotion.
- 3:17Then the Solma says this do not trust in nobles.
- 3:21These are people that rule over other people here on earth
- 3:27specifically during this time period.
- 3:29This would not only include those that are passing laws or
- 3:35rules down to people, this would also include those that are
- 3:39rich, that they have a lot of material goods and it's almost
- 3:44as a result of that, that they are ruling over others.
- 3:48They go, I get to tell you what to do because I own the land,
- 3:53that you are working for your farm or because I have extra
- 3:57food. You need to listen to me because
- 4:00if you are ever in trouble, I'm the one that can give you extra
- 4:04food or I can give you money in times of need.
- 4:09And here what we're told in the Psalms is do not trust in
- 4:13nobles. This is a Bible command.
- 4:15This is not the first time that Psalms has said this.
- 4:18And let me put kind of the cookies on the bottom shelf for
- 4:21us today, in 2026 or whenever you're listening to this.
- 4:26Don't put your trust. Don't put your belief, your
- 4:31reliance on human governmental officials.
- 4:37Do not put your trust in the rich of this world.
- 4:41They may do things that are good at specific periods in time, and
- 4:47they may do things that are awful at specific moments in
- 4:50time. The great example for this is
- 4:53King David. That King David was described as
- 4:56a man after God's own heart. He is one that wrote many of
- 5:00these psalms that we have been walking through.
- 5:02There's not a person that believes the Bible that if I
- 5:06were to say did God choose David to be king over Israel?
- 5:09Every single Bible believing person would say absolutely God
- 5:13chose David to be king over Israel.
- 5:15Was David always right in what he did?
- 5:18No, absolutely not. And should people have put their
- 5:22like undying trust and devotion and loyalty to King David?
- 5:28No, they should not have. And as you read through the life
- 5:33of David, you can see several times in which people committed
- 5:39sin, helped David commit sin through them not telling him no,
- 5:45as the King. And several times there were.
- 5:49I can think right now of 1 instance at the end of David's
- 5:53life where Satan tempts him to violate a direct command of God.
- 5:59And as a result of that, about 70,000 people in Israel die due
- 6:09to David's sin. And there were a whole bunch of
- 6:13people that had also received the law of God, that through
- 6:16carrying out the command, the edict of King David, they led to
- 6:21the death of 70,000 people in Israel because they put their
- 6:26trust in a noble and a king rather than in God and in His
- 6:33word. For us today, just because we
- 6:38wholeheartedly believe that Romans 13, God has set up
- 6:43government for the punishment of evil doers and for the praise of
- 6:46them that do well, that does not mean that every decision that a
- 6:51government makes will actually be in service to that identity
- 6:56that God has placed on government.
- 6:59And it is our responsibility as the prophet Nathan shows us, as
- 7:04other people, even within David's reign, show us that you
- 7:07can tell the king God's anointed.
- 7:10You can tell him no, you are doing what is wrong.
- 7:13David himself exemplified this for us when he was running from
- 7:20Saul. Saul wanted to kill him.
- 7:22On two different occasions, David had opportunity to kill
- 7:26Saul and he chose not to. And he says because this is
- 7:31God's anointed. So he says I'm not going to kill
- 7:33Saul, but I am going to tell Saul, what the heck are you
- 7:36doing, dude? Like I'm not trying to steal
- 7:38your Kingdom. I love you.
- 7:40I'm for you, but stop doing this.
- 7:42Like this is not right what you are doing.
- 7:46Or we read earlier in Saul's reign that he had said, OK,
- 7:50anyone that eats before we defeat the Philistines, they are
- 7:56going to be put to death. So army, let's go fight.
- 7:59Well, Jonathan, his son was not there when Saul said that.
- 8:04And so Jonathan was super hungry.
- 8:06He found like a honeycomb or something and ate some honey and
- 8:09he was feeling great. So he went out and fought, and
- 8:12after the battle was won and got it done, a great thing Saul was
- 8:17Saul heard that Jonathan had eaten, which went against Saul's
- 8:21command. You know, he's the anointed one
- 8:23of God. He is the one who bears the
- 8:26sword. And Jonathan had violated a law
- 8:29of the land. And so Saul was like, OK,
- 8:32Jonathan must die. And he had people that stood up
- 8:34to him, soldiers that stood up to him that went, no, God has
- 8:37done an amazing work here. You are wrong in your edict.
- 8:42This law of the land that you are trying to enforce is unjust
- 8:47and wrong. And so we are going to tell you
- 8:49no. So government instituted by God
- 8:54for punishing evil, for, if you will, protecting what is good
- 8:59and for punishing what is wrong. But sometimes government and
- 9:03governmental officials fall short in that.
- 9:06So do not place your trust in them.
- 9:09Do not place your undying belief in any human ruler.
- 9:15It is foolhardy. It is stupid and frankly it
- 9:18really effects our witness to an onlooking world when they see us
- 9:24defending sin in all of its various forms.
- 9:29When we are defending sin in in service of trying to defend a
- 9:36person, we should be the ones as the people of God that are
- 9:38saying no, this or that is unjust.
- 9:42It is wrong. It goes against God's word.
- 9:44It doesn't matter that you have passed a law to this effect.
- 9:47This law is wrong. And there's 1000 different
- 9:51examples of this that could be put on any side of the aisle.
- 9:56If you're here in the United States, if you're elsewhere with
- 10:00other forms of government like this is universally 100% true.
- 10:05There is no perfect person, there is no perfect ruler
- 10:11outside of the King of Kings in the Lord of Lords.
- 10:13There will always be something that we are disagreeing, that we
- 10:18would say is unrighteous, that is wrong in the eyes of God,
- 10:22that human rulers do allow, legislate, prosecute, choose not
- 10:29to prosecute. And so we can always know there
- 10:32are going to be flaws in human ruler.
- 10:35So don't place your ultimate trust, your faith, your belief
- 10:39in them, because they cannot ultimately save you.
- 10:43They cannot rescue you like God can.
- 10:47So if you will, if you have to choose, OK, I can defend this
- 10:51sin that a person is committing or I can, if you will defend
- 10:57righteousness, I can be on team God or team this guy or girl.
- 11:03Choose to be on team God because that is always the good place to
- 11:08go. Verse #4 says when his breath
- 11:11leaves him, he returns to the ground.
- 11:13On that day his plans die. For every human ruler, there's
- 11:18going to come a day when they are no longer ruling.
- 11:21You know, here in the USI think I saw something that like 3/4 of
- 11:25our elected officials are age like 70 and up within.
- 11:32I think at the latest, within the next 30 years, every single
- 11:37one of those individuals will have passed away into eternity.
- 11:42What lasts is our relationship with God.
- 11:45What lasts is the testimony that we have put out.
- 11:51And so don't put your if you will, don't put your reputation
- 11:56on a human ruler, put your reputation on God himself.
- 12:02Or as we would read in another verse in Scripture, let God be
- 12:05true and every man a liar. May we say no?
- 12:10I am willing to call a strike a strike and a ball of all when
- 12:15there is sin going on. And I might like a lot of the
- 12:18things that a given politician does, but I can still be one
- 12:22that would say this or that is wrong.
- 12:24This is sin. They shouldn't have done that.
- 12:26They do not represent what I want them to do in this
- 12:30instance. They should fix this, they
- 12:32should change this. They should not adopt this
- 12:34position. You will never find someone that
- 12:38you agree with 100% because there's only one person with a
- 12:41perfect opinion and it is God. And so may we pursue His way,
- 12:46not the ways of man versus #5 through 9.
- 12:50Then the difference is instead of these elected back then, it
- 12:55wouldn't be elected officials. They might have had chosen
- 12:58officials a lot of times though that like whoever was the most
- 13:01popular for a variety of of given reasons.
- 13:05So they say don't listen to or don't don't not don't listen to.
- 13:10Do not place your trust and hope and and faith in these humans.
- 13:16Instead, trust the God of Jacob. This is the God of Israel, the
- 13:20God who loved the trickster, the liar, the the twister, the
- 13:25cheat. Jacob, the God who put up with
- 13:27that guy is the guy that is the one for US.
- 13:31Verse #5 happy is the one whose help is the God of Jacob, whose
- 13:36hope is in Yahweh, his God. Don't hope that people will fix
- 13:41everything. Hope that God will fix
- 13:44everything. God is making all things right,
- 13:47if you will. God is making America great
- 13:50again. Or God is the one who I can
- 13:54never recall right offhand what the slogan for the Obama
- 13:59campaign was. I think it was something like
- 14:01Hope or Change or something like our hope is not Donald Trump or
- 14:06Kamala Harris or Joe Biden or Barack Obama or, you know, Mom,
- 14:12Donnie or JD Vance. These people cannot fix what is
- 14:18wrong with our country. God can't.
- 14:20Now, he might use some things that any number of individuals
- 14:24might do, but our hope is not, oh, yeah, I'm going to go on
- 14:29the, you know, I'm going to go on the Vance Trail.
- 14:31No, instead it's I'm going to go on the God Trail because I know
- 14:36that God makes a difference. Whoever's in the Oval Office is
- 14:40not going to rescue your marriage.
- 14:41Whoever is in Congress is not going to affect your eternity.
- 14:48God is the one that is ultimate and so we follow Him and we
- 14:53place our hope and confidence in Him.
- 14:55Verses 6 through 9 then tells us like who God is and what does
- 15:00God do? Verse 6, the maker of heaven and
- 15:03earth. He made the skies and the land,
- 15:05the sea and everything in them. I've talked a lot about the
- 15:09chaos waters, the way that they viewed, if you will, the the
- 15:15oceans here, the Mediterranean Sea as constantly trying to kill
- 15:20you. And so he says everything that's
- 15:23chaotic in our world, everything that is seen, what's on the land
- 15:26and everything that's unseen, what is in the skies.
- 15:29God is the maker of all of it. And so we can trust in him
- 15:33because he, he is the one that is in charge of every atom of
- 15:38creation. He is the one that is in charge
- 15:40of all spiritual beings. He's in charge of life and
- 15:43death. And then at the end of verse 6
- 15:46on through 9, we see what God does.
- 15:48He remains faithful forever. Politicians are constantly flip
- 15:53flopping. One day they're like, oh, yeah,
- 15:56my spiritual or not. Not my spiritual, my political
- 15:58opponent. Yeah.
- 15:59I really think that they're America's Hitler.
- 16:02And then within, you know, five years now, they're on that
- 16:05person's team and you're like, wait a second, what happened?
- 16:07I thought this person was Hitler.
- 16:09It's because there's not faithfulness.
- 16:10There's not consistency. It is a, if you will, It's a
- 16:14game in the political realm, and instead of human unfaithfulness,
- 16:21God is the one who remains faithful forever.
- 16:24He's always consistent. He always has the same opinion.
- 16:26He's never flip flopping on any moral issue.
- 16:30He is one that is consistent. Verse #7 He remains faithful,
- 16:33forever executing justice for the exploited.
- 16:37There are those that have been done wrong, that they have been
- 16:39robbed by perhaps the rich or the powerful, or those that have
- 16:44committed a crime against them. And God is the one that executes
- 16:47justice for those that have been exploited and used and abused.
- 16:53He gives food to the hungry. This is something that is part
- 16:57of the character of God, and so it ought to be something that we
- 17:00love and participate in as well. Now this might be literally you
- 17:04cooking a meal for someone, but God's priority is giving food to
- 17:08the hungry. You can see Jesus even during
- 17:11the feeding of the 5000I, he cares for all of those people
- 17:17and he doesn't just say, OK, you guys go find your own stuff.
- 17:20Instead, Jesus recognized these people go away.
- 17:23They're going to faint on the journey, like they're going to
- 17:25be in trouble without some food. And so Jesus there provides food
- 17:29for them. And so may we as the people of
- 17:32God pursue that as well. May we seek to feed the hungry.
- 17:36This is why every single month we support a local food bank
- 17:41right here in our area in Essex. I would encourage you to do that
- 17:44as well. I have some great friends.
- 17:47I think of Matthew Melton right now often watches the podcast
- 17:50and him and some of his friends, I think it's the ministry right
- 17:55now is called Harold's House. I think Matt, either if you're
- 17:59watching on Facebook or YouTube or whatever, throw it in the
- 18:01comments if there's any information that would be
- 18:04helpful for some people in our area to be able to look out for
- 18:07that. But God gives food to the
- 18:09hungry. He says you always freeze
- 18:11prisoners, that just because someone has broken the law of a
- 18:15particular land does not mean that they're actually in a
- 18:20rebellion of God's law, that there are people that ought to
- 18:22be free that are currently in prison.
- 18:25And you can look at various nations around the world today.
- 18:28You can find brothers and sisters in the Lord that have
- 18:31been incarcerated as a result of sharing their faith or as a
- 18:34result of, you know, preaching the Bible that they are
- 18:40imprisoned. And so God cares about those
- 18:42that have been wrongfully imprisoned.
- 18:44Don't just assume because a law is on the books or just because
- 18:49someone wrote something means that it is right in the eyes of
- 18:52God. Instead, always go back to
- 18:54Scripture because Scripture is the basis for why we determine
- 18:57everything that we believe. Yahweh opens the eyes of the
- 19:01blind. We see Jesus doing this even in
- 19:03His ministry. And I'm thankful for those that
- 19:05work with medical missions today and are able to continue helping
- 19:10those that are in medical need with the gospel and with the
- 19:14love of Jesus as exemplified by the way that they live their
- 19:18lives and what they do in kindness to others.
- 19:21He says Yahweh raises up those who are oppressed.
- 19:24There are people that have just been trodden down in life and
- 19:27God lists those people up. Do you look at the oppressed and
- 19:30go, oh man, sucks for them or man, if they would just pull
- 19:34themselves up by their bootstraps?
- 19:36No, God raises up those who are oppressed.
- 19:39Are we doing the same even in our life?
- 19:42Yahweh loves the righteous, those that follow God and man.
- 19:47What a deep crime against the Lord of all it is when we are
- 19:52when nations oppress those that are righteous.
- 19:56I can think even a few years ago of a lot of the like laws,
- 20:02statutes, executive orders that were passed on the gathering of
- 20:07crowds and things even during 2020 and kind of that COVID
- 20:11season. And there were churches that
- 20:14were not allowed to even following a lot of the rules of.
- 20:19You know, having masks and distancing or having, you know,
- 20:24a parking lot service and everyone you know in their cars.
- 20:28I forget if it was like windows down or windows up or something.
- 20:32And there were churches that were not even allowed to do some
- 20:36of those things. And I'm thankful for the actions
- 20:39of people during that time to say, no, this is, these are
- 20:42unjust laws that are coming against those that are just
- 20:46seeking to obey scriptures commands to gather together.
- 20:49And they're trying to do it in the right way, but they're not
- 20:52even being allowed to do that. They're not being given some of
- 20:54the accommodations that other businesses or other types of
- 20:58gatherings are experiencing. And so I can think there's a
- 21:02church right now in Capitol Hill Baptist Church down in DC that
- 21:08really underwent some unjust discrimination as they were
- 21:13trying to do church in a good way.
- 21:16And they were just not being treated well by the government
- 21:20that was making no allowances for them to be able to follow
- 21:23through on their convictions. And so as a result, they sued
- 21:28the city again, not for like financial gain, not for, hey,
- 21:32give us 50 million in damages, but literally just to be able to
- 21:36follow scriptures command that they would be righteous in
- 21:39gathering together as the people of God.
- 21:41And the judges ruled in their favor because they were correct
- 21:45that there was an unjust oppression on those that were
- 21:49seeking to follow the will of God.
- 21:51And so here Yahweh loves the righteous.
- 21:53May we lift up what is good in our nation and within our world.
- 21:59I can think of several nations right now that are even
- 22:03attempting to in in an attempt to be quote, UN quote, kind that
- 22:09are outlawing any of what they would call conversion therapy,
- 22:13Including when a person goes to a biblical counselor and says
- 22:17like, hey, I'm struggling with homosexual or same sex
- 22:20attraction and I want to be rid of this.
- 22:24I know this isn't what the Bible has to say.
- 22:26Like, would you help me? And there are some nations that
- 22:28have made even that counseling against the law and that would
- 22:31not be in line here with what is good.
- 22:35Don't put your trust in nobles and these rulers that would pass
- 22:38things like that. Instead, God loves the righteous
- 22:41and so may we seek to exalt righteousness and good and right
- 22:45living within our world. Verse 9 Yahweh protects resident
- 22:51aliens and helps the fatherless and the widow, but He frustrates
- 22:56the ways of the wicked that the wicked will seek to oppress or
- 23:00to harm resident alien aliens. Hence why Yahweh protects them
- 23:05because they are under attack. May we as the people of God, no
- 23:09matter what a given party says at any given time, may we have a
- 23:13love and a desire for the protection of those that are
- 23:17resident aliens, that they are not from here, but they are
- 23:21living here. May we seek to protect them
- 23:23because that's what God says He does, and it says that He helps
- 23:28the fatherless and the widow. Do you care for those that do
- 23:31not have the means to care for themselves?
- 23:35The conclusion of all this verse #10 Yahweh reigns forever.
- 23:39He is the king that never dies. He says Zion, your God reigns
- 23:43for all generations. Hallelujah.
- 23:46Well, I'm sure I might get in trouble with someone for
- 23:48something I said today, but I look forward to hearing from
- 23:52you. My desire would always just be
- 23:54I'm reading the words on the pages and I want to be faithful
- 23:58to believe every word of God. And that doesn't play nicely
- 24:02with today's political parties. But I'm not here for a political
- 24:06party. I'm here for King Jesus.
- 24:08And whatever he says, I got to believe and I got to do.
- 24:11Thanks for tuning in. See you next episode.
