Transcript
- 0:01So you guys mind if I ask you a couple questions?
- 0:03No.
- 0:04We're gonna start with Matt.
- 0:07Tell everybody what's going on in your career, where you're from.
- 0:10Is this your first time doing songwriters?
- 0:13Yeah.
- 0:14Yeah.
- 0:14I've been dealing with a bunch in my life.
- 0:17My buddy Charlie used to be the sheriff here.
- 0:21Come out and stayed with him quite a bit Yeah.
- 0:24Way back.
- 0:25I'm from the East I'm East River, and I got a hat on, which definitely don't connote East
- 0:31River.
- 0:32But a singer songwriter.
- 0:35Maybe thirty close to thirty years I've been playing, and I'm not I was kinda called last
- 0:42minute.
- 0:42Somebody canceled, and I got to fill their spot.
- 0:45I'm not overly ready.
- 0:46I don't really play out a lot.
- 0:48I like to write a lot, and my thing is promoting music.
- 0:51I got a music festival in Montrose, South Dakota.
- 0:54Do.
- 0:56Way out of the box.
- 0:57I try to I don't hire anybody with Eagle.
- 1:00We don't do the normal stages.
- 1:03We got sponsored song circles in our in our city park, and it's more of a community
- 1:08festival.
- 1:09And so I hire 30 to 50 national acts, and I don't I don't hire anybody to come play their
- 1:15set and leave.
- 1:16They gotta stay for the whole festival, they gotta walk around and talk to the locals and be
- 1:21involved in the community.
- 1:22We ask anyone who's comfortable.
- 1:26We have elders in town that can't make it out, so we send people into their homes to play for
- 1:30them.
- 1:32And we invite I feel like really, because of farming, we're not allowed to have hobbies or
- 1:39to play guitar.
- 1:40So there's all these great farm kids that play, and they never bring their guitar out of their
- 1:45house.
- 1:46And they sure ain't gonna go to town to play an open mic.
- 1:49So we're like closet musician capital of the world.
- 1:52Trying to trying to get some of these great players to bring their guitar out of the house
- 1:56is is brutal.
- 1:58So I'm trying to create an atmosphere that invites them in.
- 2:01So there's I got big log, cottonwood logs, 10 to 12 in each circle, and the local venues
- 2:07sponsor the circles.
- 2:10And then I got some Texas circles that come up as well.
- 2:14So if you come and your little kids that are just trying a song for their first time,
- 2:19they're playing in the same circles as all the national acts.
- 2:23And so all of the people that I hire to play the festival, know to make it comfortable for
- 2:30beginners and to visit and to relieve that pressure of sitting next to somebody who plays
- 2:35250 shows a year.
- 2:37You know?
- 2:38So it's more community where all of our small towns are falling apart.
- 2:42The big ones, if you got two grocery stores, you're thriving.
- 2:46But if you're most of us, we've lost our swimming pool and grocery store.
- 2:52Everything is business.
- 2:54So I'm just trying to use music to promote if you live in a big town, you know, once a week,
- 3:00leave town, fill your gas tank, eat at a small restaurant at Mass where you can buy eggs and
- 3:05robeys.
- 3:07So
- 3:09Thank you, Daniel.
- 3:13Gonna go to a couple of starts
- 3:14in the middle.
- 3:15But I also wanted to point out, you've got a couple of things down here.
- 3:18Do you wanna
- 3:19Yeah.
- 3:19There's a a couple programs from last year's festival if you wanna see some of the some of
- 3:25the artists that I got are, you know, Grammy winning, and, you know, they play the Austin
- 3:29City limits, and they come and just hang out all weekend.
- 3:33So you can grab a program if you're interested.
- 3:36I got some bumper stickers on sale for $5, and I I left all my CDs at home.
- 3:43Not prepared.
- 3:44Anyway
- 3:45Well, thank you.
- 3:45And we're gonna go to the middle chair there.
- 3:48We got Bubba Starts.
- 3:50And I see you at your little bar code down here.
- 3:52I do.
- 3:53I just, I've been working on a new album.
- 3:56Johnny Hastings is hiding over there in the corner.
- 3:58He he had a hand in it too.
- 4:00But we just finished it up, I wanted to come out and promote it this weekend.
- 4:03So hurried it out to my website.
- 4:05It's not available on any streaming networks or anything yet, but we got got music that I'll
- 4:10send you a sneak peek of right away.
- 4:12And you can download a song right from there.
- 4:14So and where are you from?
- 4:16I grew up here in Deadwood.
- 4:17I live East River now as well, but I live down in a little town called Tyndall.
- 4:24So we're about ten minutes north of the Missouri River and 30 miles east of the
- 4:29Missouri River in the little elbow there at the southeast corner of the state, and I loved it.
- 4:34But I grew up here, and I say that this my favorite weekend in Deadwood, we know Deadwood
- 4:39is known for events, But this one is special and it's special because it's original music
- 4:45and that's what has always meant the world to me, it's why I have a podcast called The Scene
- 4:50Projects in which I feature independent artists on.
- 4:53We've done over 300 interviews.
- 4:55This year, we passed a thousand uploads on YouTube and over 280,000 views.
- 5:00And it's all independent music.
- 5:02It's all People like Matt's been on the show.
- 5:07It's about promoting originality.
- 5:10We have so many great players around the state and throughout the Midwest.
- 5:14I'm a member of the Midwest Country Music Organization as well.
- 5:18And just started digging in, having conversations with great amazing people.
- 5:21I gotta get Tyler Bills on there too, but that's why the record button has already hit on
- 5:26the on the camera back there.
- 5:28So looking forward to just being here and absorbing all of this, and it's really
- 5:32inspiring as a songwriter to come out here and and to see people like Tyler and Matt and
- 5:38Johnny and and so many others that are gonna be in town this weekend.
- 5:42And this is kinda how I how I fill my cup, right, this weekend and overjoyed to be asked
- 5:47to come and play and to be invited into Jacob's gallery for the first time to play as well.
- 5:52So thanks for having us, Scott.
- 5:53You got a beautiful room full of art and we hope to do our best to share our art with you
- 5:58guys today too.
- 5:59Thank you so much for being here.
- 6:01And then we got Tyler Bills.
- 6:03Do wanna tell us a little about what's going on with your career?
- 6:05Where are you from?
- 6:06My name is Tyler Bills.
- 6:08I live in Spearfish, South Dakota.
- 6:10I'm originally from Denver, Colorado.
- 6:13Moved up here, like, over ten ten years, twelve years ago to be in a a local Midwest rock band
- 6:21named Judd Hoose and played spent the last ten years of my life touring all over the country
- 6:28with these yahoos, and it was an incredible, incredible time.
- 6:35Got to open for people like Billy Idol, Dirt Eye Blind, Pug Cherry, Puddle Mud, some good
- 6:41stuff.
- 6:41And we released a bunch of albums.
- 6:44You can
- 6:45go check it check out a bunch of music on there, Judd Hoos.
- 6:48At the end of last summer, I just hit a point where I was like, man, I've never got to be
- 6:53just the solo acoustic guy, I left the band at the end of last summer.
- 6:58I got to pick my last show, though.
- 7:00We opened it for third eye blind somewhere in Iowa.
- 7:03So I was like, alright.
- 7:04Can't go wrong there.
- 7:07And, yeah, I've had the best year of my music career so far this year.
- 7:11I've played some shows I've always wanted to play, and I've stayed pretty local too, which
- 7:16is really nice getting to go home to my family and not as much travel.
- 7:22So that has been nice.
- 7:24I also have a funk blues band called Denizens of the Deep.
- 7:27I'm gonna do a shameless plug.
- 7:28We're playing dead weird and dead with tobacco next weekend.
- 7:31That kept me busy, but it was always just an outlet for something different than Judd Hoos.
- 7:36And so, yeah, I and I released my first ever acoustic EP under my own name this summer on
- 7:44July 4.
- 7:45I never thought I would do that.
- 7:46And so to go check it out, it's on Tyler, own all the streaming services.
- 7:51I even had a bet with Johnny who would do it first, and so now he's in the hot seat.
- 7:58So but, yeah, excited to be here.
- 8:01I've seen this is my third or fourth songwriters festival.
- 8:05I look forward to it every year.
- 8:07I block off the weekend no matter if I'm gonna play or not.
- 8:10It's just so cool to come up and support other great artists and meet really cool people.
- 8:14And what a prestigious venue this is with all the amazing art and then get to share the
- 8:20Jacobs space and really cool.
- 8:23So thank you for having me.
- 8:24Appreciate it.
- 8:27So now that we all had a chance to say hi to everybody, guys ready for some music?
- 8:32Yeah.
- 8:33Do you guys in the back wanna get seated before we start playing?
- 8:37You guys want chairs?
- 8:37Oh, if you go around.
- 8:39You can go around.
- 8:40If everybody could be seated so everybody could pay attention to the singers and the
- 8:43songwriters.
- 8:44So since you finished there, Tyler, why don't you start us off?
- 8:47So welcome to the thirteenth year of the Wildlife Songwriter.
- 8:52Alright.
- 8:59Well, I'm gonna start out with something brand new.
- 9:02Haven't played this one for anybody yet.
- 9:04So I just wrote this one.
- 9:06I'm not recorded yet.
- 9:07This one's called no pain, no change.
- 12:28Great, everyone.
- 12:28Hopefully, you get that in the studio in a couple weeks.
- 12:31Record that.
- 12:31There's a little dial on top of that microphone on there.
- 12:34Can you turn that down?
- 12:36It's up on the top of the mics.
- 12:37Yeah.
- 12:38I can see it clipping out a little bit.
- 12:40Yep.
- 12:40I wanna make sure we capture all this in pristine audio too.
- 12:44Tyler, I'm such a big fan of yours, man.
- 12:46I was so proud of you because it was a huge it was a huge step.
- 12:50You played in one of the biggest bands in South Dakota, and to walk away from that spotlight
- 12:56took a lot of balls to to to say, you know what, it's been a great thing, you could have
- 13:02kept doing that forever.
- 13:03You could have kept going.
- 13:04Yeah.
- 13:04And to say, I wanna do my thing, I have what it takes and and you did.
- 13:10I've all I've been a huge Tyler Bills fan since you moved here.
- 13:14I've a huge fan of what you do.
- 13:16But what you do and your style is so much different than what Judd Poose did and I know
- 13:22that that had to play into that where it's I have to express So I'm so proud of you when you
- 13:27made the change and made the decision to do it and getting to follow along now as the Tyler
- 13:32Bills trio is going all over and you're doing the solo shows now releasing music of your own,
- 13:38man.
- 13:38It's just so cool.
- 13:39So thanks.
- 13:40Thanks, brother.
- 13:40I was thrilled.
- 13:41You all don't know how happy I got him.
- 13:44I got to see the schedule come out and I had a round with Tyler Bills and Matt Faulkner at the
- 13:48same time.
- 13:49So I think we'll just kinda do this.
- 13:51We'll just snake around and we'll come back to you.
- 13:54Man, the hardest part about this weekend is that you really gotta step up your game.
- 13:59You get put on stage with some really talented people and you have to not necessarily one up
- 14:06each other, but you wanna do your best, right?
- 14:08And you wanna put your best stuff out there.
- 14:10So I mentioned I got a new album coming out and I got a sneak peek of one, so I'm gonna play
- 14:15that song.
- 14:18Of course you can.
- 14:21That's funny, right?
- 14:23Awesome.
- 14:24Alright.
- 14:25This one's called Everlasting.
- 14:26This is a song I wrote a few years ago now.
- 14:29It was something that came to me.
- 14:31My granny had beaten cancer into remission twenty years ago, but they knew that it was
- 14:37they knew if it ever came back that it was gonna be aggressive.
- 14:40And we found out in, I think it was late twenty twenty two, that it it was back, and it it
- 14:45wasn't gonna be long.
- 14:46And the only way that I've ever dealt with something personal to me, whether it was a
- 14:50heartbreak or, you know, the good times as well, was to write about it.
- 14:55So this is the song that came out.
- 14:56This one's called Everlasting.
- 17:26Awesome.
- 17:28I have not made
- 17:29it up to Montrose Music Festival yet, and I feel terrible about that, Matt.
- 17:33Sounds really cool.
- 17:34There's absolutely no reason to feel terrible.
- 17:38It's busy.
- 17:39Like, we're all in this we're all getting disillusioned with busy, I think.
- 17:46We should be making time for each other a little more often.
- 17:49I don't again, you have to bear with me a bit.
- 17:56I'm a little fresh into this again.
- 17:58I got a 10 year old kid, and I've been putting my time into him and this festival.
- 18:05I only say yes when it's an end around.
- 18:07I'm not a big fan of being on stage, but I'll do it anytime I get to share it with a couple
- 18:13other people.
- 18:14So I'm really excited to be here and to have only that opportunity.
- 18:20I was living in Austin right behind the continental, and a friend of mine made me this
- 18:23custom guitar, not this one.
- 18:25And I had it for a year and had not wrote a song on it, and I was so frustrated that I come
- 18:32up with this.
- 21:21Stage and you're like, oh, is gonna
- 21:24be tough.
- 21:25Man, that was awesome.
- 21:27Yeah.
- 21:28Gosh.
- 21:29Well,
- 21:31like I said, I left a band that I was in for ten years, Dina last summer.
- 21:37We were working all the way up until then, and we had a single ready to release that I it's
- 21:43kind of like my baby that I've been sitting on for a couple years, and we were like, had it in
- 21:49post production.
- 21:50We're gonna send it to mastering, and it was all ready and then went and ruined it all, quit
- 21:56the band.
- 21:56But I I hope that, you know, that version gets recorded someday.
- 22:02I did put this song.
- 22:04It's the first song on my acoustic EP.
- 22:07So I encourage you guys to go check it out, but, this one's called Proven.
- 24:52Can't help and get this stupid smile on my face every time you hit that falsetto.
- 24:56I'm so jealous.
- 24:57I'm so jealous of your range, man.
- 25:00You're such a great singer.
- 25:01And, yeah, to hear you sing your own music now and to go out and and just do that.
- 25:07I mean, is there a difference for you?
- 25:11Because Jahus was a lot of covers.
- 25:12Not that you guys didn't have original music that you were playing, but you were playing a
- 25:15lot of other people's music.
- 25:16Absolutely.
- 25:16Is there a difference now in the feeling for you on now than maybe it did for that decade?
- 25:35Absolutely.
- 25:36Yes.
- 25:36Yes.
- 25:36Yeah.
- 25:37Because you guys were busy.
- 25:38I mean, you were playing 150 shows a year at least.
- 25:40Right?
- 25:40I mean, that's that's a lot.
- 25:41Yep.
- 25:42No doubt.
- 25:43I play 10 shows a year, and it's a lot.
- 25:46This is Matt's only show of the year.
- 25:50Oh, that's not true.
- 25:51I thought you and Montrose, our good friends put a good little deal together.
- 25:54That's actually where I heard that song the first time.
- 25:57I can't match Tyler's energy and if I try to all weekend, I'm gonna blow it out.
- 26:01I got two rounds today, two rounds tomorrow and I'm playing both evenings up at Lils Above the
- 26:07Midnight Star.
- 26:08So I'm gonna dial it back a little bit on the energy level.
- 26:11This is a song that I wrote for my wife after we had too many at the bar and I was me and
- 26:18said some stupid things.
- 26:19So this one's called True Meaning.
- 26:22It's gotten me out of the doghouse a couple of times, fellas.
- 26:25I hope now that it's on this record that it does the same for you.
- 26:33Watching me in the morning as you're getting up for work.
- 26:51In your hand.
- 26:53Spending all day miserable with feelings bottled up, and then we both get so emotional
- 27:00when we try to talk it out.
- 27:03Blowing up our phones with all this texting back and forth, wishing I could find the words
- 27:10to show you what you're really worth.
- 27:48True meaning of my life.
- 27:54I couldn't live my life without you.
- 27:56No.
- 27:57I wouldn't even try to turn your hoe on upside
- 30:08My dream has never been to be up here.
- 30:10I've always wanted like these these Nashville guys, I've always wanted to have other people
- 30:16cover my songs so I could stay home and let them sing.
- 30:22I've gotten fairly lucky with that.
- 30:25This song, I never play.
- 30:27So, again, hopefully, I can manage it.
- 30:30But it's friend Jonathan Bird, who produced my self titled album, you can get it on
- 30:38mattfaulkler.com.
- 30:40I've got a few things on there.
- 30:42What I do for a living in the festival, and this artist advocacy network I'm trying to
- 30:48build.
- 30:50I won't get into all that.
- 30:51But Jonathan's got it on his new double album, and then there's Martha Bassett, who's got a
- 30:58nationally syndicated show out in North Carolina.
- 31:00It's been covered.
- 31:33Do you dream?
- 31:37Do your dreams come true?
- 32:49Just a wide open wild.
- 32:52Playing night games in the neighborhood.
- 32:56Playing like grown ups should.
- 33:00Dreaming like there's no way you could these
- 35:50Yeah.
- 35:53So, like, for me, when I write, it it's always I I hear my own voice.
- 35:58Right?
- 35:58It's my stories that I'm telling.
- 36:00As someone who is writing with the intention of hopefully somebody else recording it, do you
- 36:06hear your voice as you're writing, or are you hearing someone else's voice in there?
- 36:11I have zero control over songs I write.
- 36:15I I don't know how to write a song.
- 36:17I'm not sure anybody really does.
- 36:20I could give some advice, but they just show up, and you're lucky when they do.
- 36:27Like an old friend.
- 36:28That
- 36:32particular song, Do You Dream, my mom is always they are thrift fiends.
- 36:37Like, they're retired now, and all they do is go to thrift stores and rummages.
- 36:41So I have them look for word books because I I tend to my mom brought home a what do you call
- 36:49them?
- 36:53Anyways, that whole song is is written out of that book.
- 36:59I I picked it up and and just cliches.
- 37:02I call them glitches.
- 37:04Just about every line in the whole song is a cliche, but they're all just I don't know.
- 37:09I flipped through the book, and it wrote itself just with cliches.
- 37:13So I I very little lyric in that song is not a cliche next to another cliche.
- 37:21Anyways, I I don't know.
- 37:25That's a good answer.
- 37:28Very cool.
- 37:31Give it up for Stew Jenner for making a sound taste.
- 37:34This next one is an oldie, but a goodie.
- 37:45I wrote this when I had just moved from Denver up to Rapid City and didn't know very many
- 37:51people yet.
- 37:52I was getting to know people and kind of a scary big jump.
- 37:56And songwriting is such a powerful tool to, like, as a therapy kind of self therapy and
- 38:03getting things out that you need to.
- 38:05And so the song means a lot to me.
- 38:08This one's called wasted time.
- 42:19Great stuff, Tyler.
- 42:20So proud of you, man.
- 42:23So proud to see you playing your music.
- 42:27I gotta get you on the scene projects, even though this is gonna go out on there.
- 42:31Perfect, a little sneak peek.
- 42:32Yeah, well, I just Your story matters, right?
- 42:36Moving up here from Denver and joining a big band and doing it for a decade, man, you you've
- 42:42lived a a hell of a life.
- 42:44And now stepping out, the best is yet to come.
- 42:47That's right.
- 42:48Haven't peaked yet.
- 42:49No.
- 42:50No.
- 42:50Well, and, you
- 42:51know, for guys in our thirties, I got six months left or so.
- 42:54It's it's crazy for me to look back and to think that I've been playing music, you know,
- 43:00professionally.
- 43:01Right?
- 43:01I've been getting paid to play music for twenty five years.
- 43:04And it's like, how did
- 43:04a quarter century get away that fast?
- 43:06You know, I started playing in bands.
- 43:08Same to you.
- 43:08I mean, I know you guys were teenagers Yeah.
- 43:10When you and your brother moved up and and have been playing in bands forever.
- 43:13And shout out to Devin Bills.
- 43:15Is he still in
- 43:15Nashville?
- 43:16Sometimes.
- 43:17Yeah.
- 43:17He's not Tall Road.
- 43:19Yeah.
- 43:19Yeah.
- 43:21Now did that have anything to do with you maybe stepping out a little bit of seeing, you know,
- 43:25your brother go out and kinda doing, you know, his own thing and being out there?
- 43:29And I know he's touring with other bands, but kind of spreading his wings a little bit and
- 43:32moving to Nashville to to that whole experience.
- 43:35Absolutely.
- 43:36Yeah.
- 43:36Yeah.
- 43:36It was it was really inspiring to see him go move to a place that doesn't know anybody.
- 43:43And he grinded really hard, and now he's torn with an awesome, huge person all over the
- 43:50country.
- 43:51So it's really cool.
- 43:52So so I was like, I
- 43:53can do that.
- 43:54Yeah.
- 43:54Yeah.
- 43:55Any Bills Brothers reunions coming up here soon?
- 43:58Do you get him off the road to join you at any time?
- 44:00I can't pay him enough yet,
- 44:05Oh, awesome.
- 44:06Well, I mentioned the podcast.
- 44:08It's really a network of podcasts.
- 44:09We have several now.
- 44:10But The Scene Projects, you can find all that at thesceneprojects.com.
- 44:14The Scene is like the music scene, s c e n e.
- 44:16I have over 300 interviews with independent artists up there.
- 44:20I do two a week.
- 44:22I'm scheduled out with episodes already into April.
- 44:25So we got plenty of content coming out.
- 44:28We won the content creator of the year award from the Midwest Country Music Organization
- 44:31back in April and I felt like I had to earn it this year.
- 44:35So I went even harder on it because it's needed.
- 44:37We don't have a big break for us out there anymore.
- 44:40There's not really an outlet for musicians.
- 44:42There is no MTV in the sense that a lot of us grew up with.
- 44:46There isn't that outlet to to go on besides maybe Joe Rogan show.
- 44:50Right?
- 44:50If we could make it the Joe Rogan show, we'll be great rock stars.
- 44:52It's a grind.
- 44:53It's out there.
- 44:54It's working, and it's just making as many connections as you can and and sticking with
- 44:59it.
- 45:00And that's all it's about and that's all I'm about and I just wanted to get a little plug in
- 45:07there for the podcast.
- 45:08I hope you guys check it out.
- 45:09And yeah, I got shows on Roku now.
- 45:12So it just continues to grow.
- 45:14We have our own radio station too, but I wanna play this one.
- 45:17This is an old song of mine.
- 45:19Yeah.
- 45:19I don't even wanna recount how old it is now, but it's called music is everywhere, and and I
- 45:23feel like it encapsulates what this weekend means to me and to a great many others.
- 50:10I'm really glad to in the
- 50:20round, particularly, and singer songwriter things happening in South Dakota.
- 50:27Texas I think the reason Texas is so known for its music is because they know how to
- 50:32appreciate music.
- 50:34I grew up here on the plains, and not not talking down to any of you.
- 50:39It just I think our culture here were like, you can play to a room that seems bored out of
- 50:44their skull, and at the end of the show, they loved what you did.
- 50:48And we're just we're conservative up here.
- 50:55Texas, when when the crowd really loves the music, it makes us be able to play it better.
- 51:02And it just it doesn't seem like a lot of people are familiar with singer songwriters who
- 51:07are in the round.
- 51:08So as to see Deadwood of all places pushing that, that excites me.
- 51:13I wonder a few years ago, I heard they were trying to do a a Deadwood City Limits, and I,
- 51:19god.
- 51:19I had my fingers crossed.
- 51:20I was so excited for real music in South Dakota, but it's happening, so I'm excited.
- 51:30This song is my hit, if you if you wanna call it that.
- 51:34I've gotten really lucky.
- 51:39Steve Martin's band, Steve Canyon Rangers cover it.
- 51:44We're covering it.
- 51:46Right after the the Steve and Steve Kenyon Rangers won a Grammy, they were they released
- 51:52this record with a buffalo on the front.
- 51:54And I was like, yes.
- 51:56My song's gonna be on there.
- 51:58And it wasn't.
- 51:59So they
- 52:02totally psyched me out, and then they
- 52:04broke up and never put it on record.
- 52:06But that's alright.
- 52:09At least they covered it.
- 52:11And now the lead singer Woody Platt and the Bluegrass Gentleman just started covering it
- 52:16everywhere again.
- 52:17So maybe maybe I'll get lucky and actually get a get a song on a real not that some of my
- 52:24friends' songs.
- 52:25It's on Jonathan Bird.
- 52:27He put two of my songs on his last record.
- 52:29One of my favorite singer songwriters out of North Carolina.
- 52:33If you get a chance, listen to Jonathan Bird.
- 52:37And, yes, this guy, he's got a band called Humble Town, him and his wife, and various
- 52:45other artists, but it's one flat picking contest all over the place.
- 52:51I wish I could play more than three chords.
- 52:58I I always joke, Matt.
- 53:00Me and Dylan started playing guitar around the same time, and Dylan took one path, and I took
- 53:06another.
- 53:06And I'm always amazed by the talent that the little town of Leeds, South Dakota, was able to
- 53:11produce.
- 53:12So
- 53:14I was I grew up really prejudiced.
- 53:17Just common.
- 53:18This whole drunken Indian thing.
- 53:21And I worked through all that, and I spent a lot of years living on the reservation.
- 53:25And my best friend grew up in the feud with in Rapid City and kinda led the warlords and spent
- 53:33eighteen years in the state pen for shooting another Indian, you know, and that first
- 53:37generation was so heavily oppressed unmentionable things happened that it's so deep
- 53:47into that that the alcohol ain't the problem.
- 53:50It's looking at, you know, your parents messing with you.
- 53:55I drink too.
- 53:57So I put a lot of energy into that.
- 54:01It's my favorite topic, so I I gotta be a little careful.
- 54:03I don't rattle on.
- 54:06And so working through dealing with what I had in my mind growing up versus where I'm at now,
- 54:12I wrote this song.
- 58:19It's a recording.
- 58:20Right?
- 58:21Yeah.
- 58:21Okay.
- 58:22It's on my my new record and Jonathan Burns Awesome.
- 58:27As well.
- 58:27Oh, that was so cool.
- 58:30Well, thank you.

- 58:47playing, you know, me and stuff.
- 58:48Be just fine.
- 58:49Well, The three of us have fun.
- 58:51To have everyone here to to give that energy, it it's a big deal, and and it means a lot to
- 58:56me.
- 58:56My name is Bubba Starrs.
- 58:57The name of my band is Starts and Ends.
- 58:59That's you can find some of my music on Spotify.
- 59:01Five.
- 59:02I don't know that I'm gonna put this next record out there.
- 59:04It's too close to my heart to have somebody steal it with their AI.
- 59:08So if you want it, you can scan this code here and I'll send it to you directly and you can
- 59:12own it.
- 59:13How's that sound?
- 59:14I haven't decided if I'm gonna print it on any, but maybe a vinyl.
- 59:18I don't know.
- 59:18I heard those are coming back.
- 59:19Oh, but you can find oh, yeah.
- 59:21Startsandends.com or the scene projects and check out all
- 59:24of these amazing artists that I've
- 59:26been interviewing for the last eighteen months, and I hope you do.
- 59:29Matt?
- 59:31Shameless plugs at all or are you good?
- 59:33I'm alright.
- 59:34Okay.
- 59:35That's not popular.
- 59:36He's got a great a great music festival that he spends a lot of time and effort putting into it
- 59:42and bringing some of the most amazing songwriters that you'll ever meet out to a
- 59:46little town in South Dakota.
- 59:48It's a great time.
- 59:49I haven't been there, but I have a lot of friends who have.
- 59:51Montrose Music Festival every summer, and check it out.
- 59:56We love you guys.
- 59:57Thank you so much.
- 1:00:02Thank you, Matt.
- 1:00:03I just wanna make one comment.
- 1:00:05My daughter made a comment that you sound like Harrelson, Woody Harrelson your voice.
- 1:00:12And then when we look into your different angles, you kinda look like Woody Harrelson in
- 1:00:16order to she's alter ego.
- 1:00:18That's been my nickname since two years.
- 1:00:28I shaved my head like one time in my whole life and then natural born killers came out.
- 1:00:33I never
- 1:00:37So you've heard it before then.
- 1:00:39Yeah.
- 1:00:40Yeah.
- 1:00:43We good?
