Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Charles Woodson to the defensive goat. I mean, you are
- 0:06Speaker 1: one of the best of all time.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Bro.
- 0:07Speaker 1: It is an absolute pleasure to have you on the podcast.
- 0:09Speaker 2: I appreciate that. Man. You guys are shaping up to
- 0:11Speaker 2: be best of all time too, Like what you're doing.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Because we tried to get I remember I was I
- 0:20Speaker 1: was either we were on Twitter going back and forth
- 0:22Speaker 1: because she was a national one time. Yeah, I think,
- 0:25Speaker 1: trying to get you, but everything was way too tight.
- 0:27Speaker 2: But man, trying to make it happen. But yeah, the
- 0:30Speaker 2: timing was off a little bit, but you know, we
- 0:33Speaker 2: did it.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Finally got it done.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Man.
- 0:34Speaker 3: We obviously jumping to Michigan like for how many years?
- 0:39Speaker 3: How we just been shitty and now finally we put
- 0:44Speaker 3: it all together this year. Man, what did that mean
- 0:46Speaker 3: to you as an alumni?
- 0:47Speaker 2: Well, you know what what's crazy is that it wasn't
- 0:50Speaker 2: that we were shitty. We just couldn't beat them, guys.
- 0:53Speaker 2: We couldn't beat ohiose statement, Like that's really what it was.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Like.
- 0:57Speaker 2: We think about you know, Jim when he came in
- 1:00Speaker 2: was winning nine ten games a year, but then we
- 1:02Speaker 2: get to that last game and we could never get
- 1:05Speaker 2: over that hump, you know. So when we think back
- 1:07Speaker 2: to Michigan and we see that we had a shitty year,
- 1:11Speaker 2: you know what I mean. And so these last couple
- 1:14Speaker 2: of years have just been like, dude, I don't even
- 1:18Speaker 2: know how to explain it. You know, it's just it's
- 1:21Speaker 2: it's not even that we won the game, it's how
- 1:23Speaker 2: we won the game.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And with all the all the storyline out the year too.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Yeah, just that game.
- 1:28Speaker 1: It's the season right, Penn State, the har ball getting
- 1:31Speaker 1: before the Penn State game as there travel and he's
- 1:34Speaker 1: getting told all while they're on the tarmac.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Literally and I was. I was at that game because
- 1:38Speaker 2: I was working with the big noon kickoff crew that weekend.
- 1:42Speaker 2: And we get there and they're like, yeah, I don't
- 1:44Speaker 2: know if Gym's gonna be able to coach today. We're like,
- 1:47Speaker 2: what are you talking about? Like, yeah, you know, he
- 1:49Speaker 2: was on the plane he got the word that he
- 1:51Speaker 2: might not be coaching, like on the plane, like literally
- 1:54Speaker 2: on the plane to Happy Valleys. You're talking about you
- 1:56Speaker 2: can't play, I mean, he can't coach. So it's a
- 1:59Speaker 2: lot of different storylines, you know, this particular season with
- 2:04Speaker 2: him putting people in place. Mike Hart was a coach
- 2:07Speaker 2: win game, head coach. This Shrone Moore, who's got the
- 2:10Speaker 2: job now, he was a coach for like three or
- 2:12Speaker 2: four games. And those guys, you know, just looking at
- 2:18Speaker 2: looking at that situation in the face and just being
- 2:20Speaker 2: like it don't matter.
- 2:22Speaker 3: It's such a it's such a massive like statement to
- 2:25Speaker 3: the culture of Michigan because they had every excuse not
- 2:28Speaker 3: to achieve the goal of winning a national championship, right
- 2:31Speaker 3: and like you obviously you don't have to expand on
- 2:34Speaker 3: this at all, but how pussy was it of the
- 2:37Speaker 3: Big ten to dry to implement some sort of bullshit bandid, Hey,
- 2:42Speaker 3: we're gonna punish him Tony Patiti as they're flying to
- 2:44Speaker 3: Penn State and doing all that. That's just just.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Just bad ball.
- 2:48Speaker 3: There's no due process there. And so but the thing
- 2:50Speaker 3: I like about it personally is that if there were
- 2:53Speaker 3: all these allegations and they never took hardball off the field,
- 2:56Speaker 3: then it'd be like the true asterisk to a national championship.
- 2:59Speaker 3: But because you put all the adversity on and off
- 3:01Speaker 3: the field towards the Michigan players right now, it's like
- 3:04Speaker 3: there's there's truly like it didn't matter with gotten their
- 3:06Speaker 3: way that they were winning a national championship.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it truly was a Michigan versus everybody. You know,
- 3:12Speaker 2: the coin, the phrase that they coined, and also the
- 3:16Speaker 2: other one was bet. You know they had that. Uh,
- 3:19Speaker 2: I forget after which game it was, but it was
- 3:21Speaker 2: just to say, all right, you guys are gonna put
- 3:23Speaker 2: put all of this on our plate. Bet we'll handle it.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And that's exactly what they did. And you know, being
- 3:29Speaker 2: in Happy Valley and you know that being you know,
- 3:34Speaker 2: our toughest game at to that point on the schedule,
- 3:37Speaker 2: and then coming out in that second half and I
- 3:39Speaker 2: think they threw the ball one time and then from
- 3:42Speaker 2: there on it was like just old school Michigan football
- 3:45Speaker 2: for all half, like just just take this, take this,
- 3:49Speaker 2: take this. So yeah, it was. It was fun, man,
- 3:51Speaker 2: the whole the whole ride this year. Man, I mean,
- 3:54Speaker 2: you know, we were riding along with them, guys, man,
- 3:56Speaker 2: just on Cloud nine every week. And then when they
- 3:59Speaker 2: capped it off, I was able to go to the
- 4:01Speaker 2: semi final. Pasadena didn't make it to the championship game.
- 4:04Speaker 2: But watching that championship game and the way they performed
- 4:07Speaker 2: the domination, you know that that you know, what we
- 4:11Speaker 2: go back because you talked about the culture and that
- 4:14Speaker 2: was important with this team because of all of the
- 4:18Speaker 2: guys who said I'm coming back, I'm coming back because
- 4:21Speaker 2: we got unfinished business, and then they actually did it
- 4:25Speaker 2: like that was That's pretty special, man. So I'm happy
- 4:27Speaker 2: for them, guys.
- 4:27Speaker 1: What's it like knowing that you guys brought that Michigan,
- 4:30Speaker 1: your guys university brought a national title in twenty twenty three,
- 4:33Speaker 1: and it's been since what like the nineteen forties, since
- 4:35Speaker 1: you guys last won a national title?
- 4:37Speaker 2: Ninety seven? Man, Damn, yeah, I knew he did it
- 4:42Speaker 2: on purpose. I know what he did.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I know.
- 4:45Speaker 2: That was good. That good. That's good. That's good. Okay,
- 4:48Speaker 2: I see, I see how it is, see how the
- 4:49Speaker 2: show is gonna be.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Taylor and I obviously we always go back and forth. Ye,
- 4:57Speaker 1: I mean, you guys have been whooping our ass for
- 4:58Speaker 1: a while.
- 5:00Speaker 2: It's funny.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I had to get that in because it's always like
- 5:02Speaker 1: if I'm if I'm put up against Taylor Dave Poortnoy,
- 5:06Speaker 1: we go back and forth. If I try to throw Nebraska,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and it's like all nineteen ninety seven. Personally, I feel
- 5:12Speaker 1: like as a player. You like being the coaches pole
- 5:16Speaker 1: National Championship more than the AP national chair.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Well man, you know when you guys got up there
- 5:21Speaker 2: and start crying, you know, after the season about you know,
- 5:25Speaker 2: our coaches leaving and man, we deserve it, were like,
- 5:29Speaker 2: what the hell is going on? Right? You know what
- 5:30Speaker 2: I mean? So you guys begged your way into that.
- 5:35Speaker 2: That was tough too.
- 5:36Speaker 3: The coaches just like, I guess we'll just give it
- 5:38Speaker 3: to him then, like really, come.
- 5:39Speaker 1: On, I mean we you know, Nebraska beat And it's
- 5:42Speaker 1: funny because Charles is like he's a he was a player,
- 5:44Speaker 1: he was on the Michigan team. Like we're like, I'm
- 5:46Speaker 1: just sitting here, like, oh we Nebraska, Yeah you're eight
- 5:49Speaker 1: yeah yeah old hey. But Nebraska beat Peyton Manning led Tennessee.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Oh man, they did.
- 5:55Speaker 1: They did average over forty a game. Fish can average
- 5:59Speaker 1: twenty something. However, they're defense. You guys.
- 6:01Speaker 2: We were pretty mad about that too, because we go
- 6:03Speaker 2: out to you know, washingt this thing. We're like, all right,
- 6:06Speaker 2: you know, Tennessee, you know, give these boys a fight,
- 6:09Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, because that's going to help
- 6:10Speaker 2: our calls if they roll down there and struggle and
- 6:13Speaker 2: Nebraska goes down there and slaps some boys.
- 6:15Speaker 1: It's like, damn it, what's it like? Because you guys
- 6:19Speaker 1: had you guys played more like top ten teams that
- 6:20Speaker 1: you're like, oh, i'll say the Big ten, like back
- 6:22Speaker 1: in the nineties, Like you guys had more of those
- 6:24Speaker 1: teams in the top ten. But like, as a player,
- 6:26Speaker 1: are you kind of hoping you get dealt like I
- 6:28Speaker 1: don't remember how it worked with the bowl game selection
- 6:30Speaker 1: back then, but are you hoping you get like the
- 6:32Speaker 1: higher matchup or did you already kind of know you
- 6:34Speaker 1: were going to play the Pac twelve champion?
- 6:36Speaker 2: There was a Pactorld Championship, so I think we were
- 6:38Speaker 2: a year before the BCS SOT. If it was a
- 6:42Speaker 2: year later, we would have had a chance to play.
- 6:44Speaker 1: It would have been it would have been Nebraska.
- 6:45Speaker 2: We'd have a chance to play in Nebraska, but were
- 6:48Speaker 2: just one year too early. Man. So yeah, we went
- 6:51Speaker 2: out and played the winner, the Pack twelve, and they played,
- 6:54Speaker 2: you know, Nebraska. So that's just where that's the way
- 6:59Speaker 2: it went.
- 7:00Speaker 3: When you're when you're doing all the big new stuff
- 7:02Speaker 3: and it's your essentially your job, your obligation to be
- 7:05Speaker 3: as unbiased as possible, But all this stuff is like
- 7:07Speaker 3: going down. How do you catch yourself in Happy Valley thinking,
- 7:12Speaker 3: all right, Hardball's not on there, but you're on the sideline.
- 7:14Speaker 3: I think there's a clip of you and it might've
- 7:17Speaker 3: been Desmond Howard as well, like getting hyped up, like
- 7:20Speaker 3: are you like trying your best not to get excited?
- 7:22Speaker 2: No, like our producers and you know everyone who brought
- 7:27Speaker 2: me in. You know at Fox, they know that when
- 7:29Speaker 2: it comes to Michigan, it is what it is like
- 7:32Speaker 2: when I'm on the set, I'm rootming for Michigan, I'm
- 7:35Speaker 2: on the sideline and room for Michigan. I'm going to
- 7:37Speaker 2: be biased as bias can get. So there's no secret.
- 7:42Speaker 2: But yeah, but when it comes when it comes down
- 7:45Speaker 2: to like really talking about the game, like keys the game,
- 7:48Speaker 2: how Michigan's Michigan, Michigan is going to win, on how
- 7:51Speaker 2: State's gonna win, I'll give the real but as it
- 7:55Speaker 2: you know, in terms of what my loyalties like, it
- 7:58Speaker 2: ain't no secret.
- 7:59Speaker 1: You enjoy Cup in college more than the NFL because
- 8:01Speaker 1: I know he was doing NFL before you signed on
- 8:03Speaker 1: with with the NFL.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Is where it's at. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I love the NFL.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Man college is too many damn teams in.
- 8:10Speaker 1: College there as I feel like you, like I enjoy
- 8:13Speaker 1: the school spirit of college because you just know you're
- 8:16Speaker 1: pulling for your team no matter what versus the NFL.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Like playing on a few different teams, it's like it's
- 8:21Speaker 1: more of like a player driven Like I'm kind of
- 8:23Speaker 1: rude for guys and players, And yeah, I like to
- 8:24Speaker 1: see the Raiders, the Titans, Washington do well. But like
- 8:28Speaker 1: that the connection with your with your school spirit in college.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it ain't nothing like it. It's nothing like it.
- 8:34Speaker 2: And uh, you know, I get asked that question like,
- 8:36Speaker 2: you know, you know why you why do you feel
- 8:39Speaker 2: the way you feel about Michigan? You know why you
- 8:41Speaker 2: love them so much? And I answered this question not
- 8:44Speaker 2: too long ago, and I think it's like for me,
- 8:46Speaker 2: it was the first place I was trying to get to,
- 8:49Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, being a being a high
- 8:50Speaker 2: school athlete and you know, you're getting out of all
- 8:53Speaker 2: of these letters and you know you're you're working towards,
- 8:57Speaker 2: you know, trying to do something bigger than playing in
- 8:59Speaker 2: high school, like Michigan was like I'm trying to get there.
- 9:03Speaker 2: You know what I mean, and it was a dream
- 9:06Speaker 2: come true to you know, sign there and go to
- 9:08Speaker 2: Michigan and so you know that that that love of
- 9:11Speaker 2: you know, you know, trying to get to a destination
- 9:14Speaker 2: and reaching it. You know, it was was a big deal.
- 9:16Speaker 2: So you know that's why it runs deep.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Yeah, you had a really good interview on the pivot
- 9:22Speaker 1: and I'm trying to recall. Can you tell the story
- 9:25Speaker 1: about there was a game where coach held you out
- 9:27Speaker 1: and You're like, I'm not going to go in and
- 9:29Speaker 1: say sorry, and then your mom's your mom say, hey,
- 9:31Speaker 1: if you're not going to apologize yourself, do it for me.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Can you retell that story? Yeah?
- 9:35Speaker 2: It was. It was. It was just crazy because my
- 9:37Speaker 2: you know, we had played uh, I think I forget
- 9:42Speaker 2: the game we played before Ohio State. But anyway, I
- 9:47Speaker 2: had my back locked up for whatever reason, and I
- 9:51Speaker 2: talked to the trainer. I'm like, hey, man, my back
- 9:54Speaker 2: is locked up. I don't know why I can. I
- 9:56Speaker 2: can barely move. He's like, oh, I don't worry about it.
- 9:58Speaker 2: You don't have to practice today, and so I was like, great,
- 10:02Speaker 2: But when I walk out to practice, I don't have
- 10:04Speaker 2: any Michigan issue stuff on I just got my school
- 10:07Speaker 2: stuff on. The coach cars like what are you doing?
- 10:09Speaker 2: I'm like what. He's like, what, where's where's your uniform?
- 10:13Speaker 2: I'm like, ah, man, I talked to Smitty Smitty side
- 10:15Speaker 2: and had to practice today. It was like, I don't
- 10:18Speaker 2: get in there and put something on then, So I
- 10:20Speaker 2: go in and put some other stuff on, but I
- 10:23Speaker 2: keep my white shoes on that warder school. What do
- 10:27Speaker 2: you got on your feet? I'm like, what, man, get
- 10:30Speaker 2: in there?
- 10:30Speaker 1: And when you went back in, like, are you feeling like, oh,
- 10:33Speaker 1: coach is trying me a little bit?
- 10:35Speaker 2: A little bit? Yeah, a little bit. But then this
- 10:38Speaker 2: was ninety six, so a week before Ohio State gaming.
- 10:42Speaker 2: So I came back out and then I'm on the
- 10:44Speaker 2: sideline and talking with some of the fellas and coach
- 10:47Speaker 2: he sings me, Hey, come here, go over there to
- 10:50Speaker 2: the offense. Hey, you need to pay attention. I'm like, Coach,
- 10:52Speaker 2: I'm paying attention, Like what's going on? Man, Well, if
- 10:55Speaker 2: you're going to be on the sideline, you're not practicing,
- 10:57Speaker 2: you need to pay attention. I'm like all right, So
- 10:58Speaker 2: I walk on the sideline. Few periods go by, he
- 11:01Speaker 2: cast me back over there. What's it get over here.
- 11:03Speaker 2: I'm like, damn, what is going on today? Man? Go
- 11:06Speaker 2: over there. Hey, if you're not going to pay attention,
- 11:08Speaker 2: you can just leave. And I was like, all right,
- 11:12Speaker 2: I'm out. So I left. I went back to the
- 11:14Speaker 2: I went back to the dorm, and a little time passed,
- 11:19Speaker 2: day or two, I don't know. I can't remember the
- 11:21Speaker 2: timeline of that. But I get called down by my position,
- 11:24Speaker 2: coach Vans Bedford. He's like, hey, listen, coach wants to
- 11:28Speaker 2: talk to you. When you go down there, just go
- 11:29Speaker 2: ahead and apologize, and then he's gonna let you play
- 11:31Speaker 2: this week. And I was like, Coach, now, I'm not apologizing.
- 11:36Speaker 2: He's like, listen to me, just apologizing. So I go
- 11:38Speaker 2: down there. Me and coach talked a little while and
- 11:42Speaker 2: he's like, a, you know, do you think you justified
- 11:43Speaker 2: yourself by walking out of practice. I was like, yeah, man,
- 11:45Speaker 2: because I don't feel like you got to make an
- 11:47Speaker 2: example out of me and this whole thing. He was like,
- 11:49Speaker 2: all right, well you ain't playing this week. I was
- 11:50Speaker 2: like all right. I got up and walked out, went
- 11:53Speaker 2: down there to back to Coach Bedford's room, and he
- 11:56Speaker 2: was like, all right, what do you say. I said,
- 11:58Speaker 2: I'm not playing this week. He said, boy, I told you,
- 12:02Speaker 2: don't go down there and say nothing, but just apologize.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Hold on a minute. He gets on the phone. My
- 12:08Speaker 2: mom answers MS Woodson. I told this boy, don't go
- 12:11Speaker 2: down there and say nothing. He called my mom. Man
- 12:16Speaker 2: and uh, Mama gets on the phone. What's going on.
- 12:19Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm not playing this week. She was like why.
- 12:22Speaker 2: I was like, man, you know, me and coach got
- 12:24Speaker 2: into it and this or that, and coach wants me
- 12:27Speaker 2: to apologize. I ain't apologize. She was like, okay, well
- 12:33Speaker 2: we'll just do this. If you're not going to apologize
- 12:36Speaker 2: for yourself, apologize for me. And I was like, kidding,
- 12:41Speaker 2: she broke me. So she broke it. So man, I
- 12:44Speaker 2: had to be you talk about being to knee, I
- 12:46Speaker 2: had to bend to knee man, moms mom's And so
- 12:49Speaker 2: I went down there and I was like, coach, man,
- 12:51Speaker 2: you know it's my bad man. You know, I'm sorry.
- 12:55Speaker 2: I shouldn't have walked out a practice. And that's all
- 12:58Speaker 2: he wanted. He was like, all right, playing this week,
- 13:00Speaker 2: so you should you should have You should have saw
- 13:08Speaker 2: how slow I walked down.
- 13:11Speaker 3: I bet I brought up you brought up Schmidty who
- 13:15Speaker 3: is Michigan Like, yeah, the head trainer for the longest time.
- 13:18Speaker 3: He's the guy that like, you get an X ray,
- 13:21Speaker 3: what the X ray say?
- 13:22Speaker 1: X rays?
- 13:22Speaker 3: Don't talk?
- 13:23Speaker 2: Friend, keep wanting yeah, smart, smart, smitty.
- 13:27Speaker 3: And then Big John Big Do you have any Big
- 13:29Speaker 3: John stories because I'll preface one real quick. So obviously
- 13:32Speaker 3: I was in the dark ages of Michigan with rich
- 13:34Speaker 3: Rodriguez and Bratty. No disrespect to them, it was just
- 13:37Speaker 3: that time that the alumb would come by and hey,
- 13:39Speaker 3: y'all suck, and.
- 13:40Speaker 1: That's just what it is. Tough always having the guys
- 13:43Speaker 1: in the nineties, like we had that too, where guys
- 13:45Speaker 1: you guys aren't well, we had when we.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Were at the Hot State game this year, some guys
- 13:49Speaker 3: came up and we were talking, Hey, what years were
- 13:51Speaker 3: you there again? I was like, oh, nine to thirteen.
- 13:53Speaker 3: You're like, oh, yeah, that's that's a tough time. But
- 13:56Speaker 3: when rich Rodriguez, I'll bring in that when Richard Heez
- 13:59Speaker 3: first got the job, there's a story that Big John
- 14:02Speaker 3: would go and at like five in the morning and
- 14:04Speaker 3: get on the elliptical in the weight room, but naked nothing,
- 14:07Speaker 3: and he was like a sloppy body cat. Yeah, he
- 14:11Speaker 3: was just naked on the elliptical, sweat and dripping everywhere,
- 14:14Speaker 3: all over the place. And he was just and like
- 14:17Speaker 3: the most fun way of crude, like over the top,
- 14:20Speaker 3: like kind of just a horny old guy.
- 14:21Speaker 1: But he was like.
- 14:25Speaker 2: That being said, Yeah, I don't, I don't, Yeah I don't.
- 14:28Speaker 2: I don't have the stories, like some of my teammates
- 14:30Speaker 2: have more in depth stories of Johnny, but Johnny was big.
- 14:34Speaker 2: John was kind of like, uh, like family guy, you
- 14:41Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, Like just inappropriately funny guy. You
- 14:46Speaker 2: know what I'm saying.
- 14:47Speaker 1: He always got one.
- 14:49Speaker 3: For everybody watching, the most innocent fun way the soil Johnny.
- 14:53Speaker 2: What he did, he said, what he did? You know?
- 14:56Speaker 2: So yeah, he was he was. He was that guy man,
- 14:59Speaker 2: but he he was a great guy. But yeah, it
- 15:02Speaker 2: was a lot, a lot of stories, A lot of stories,
- 15:03Speaker 2: big guys, A lot of stories. I can't I can't
- 15:06Speaker 2: tell you.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah, what what is it like? I know you've probably
- 15:10Speaker 1: been asking so much, but what was it like winning
- 15:13Speaker 1: the Heisman over Peyton Manning? I mean, and two it's
- 15:16Speaker 1: like it's Peyton Manning, you know, quarterbacks who it was
- 15:19Speaker 1: also Ryan Lee, Randy Moss, but the quarterback Peyton Manning's
- 15:24Speaker 1: got the complexion for the protection and you end up
- 15:28Speaker 1: winning the Heisman like being a two way player. What
- 15:31Speaker 1: was that like when you won that? Yeah? It was.
- 15:34Speaker 2: What's crazy is that we got three three first ballot
- 15:36Speaker 2: Hall of famers on there, Me, Peyton and Randy and
- 15:41Speaker 2: then at the time, you know, yeah, you got Ryan
- 15:44Speaker 2: Leaf there, who everybody thought, Man, he's gonna be the guy.
- 15:47Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. Yeah, with him and Peyton
- 15:49Speaker 2: coming out, a lot of people had Ryan Leaf ahead
- 15:51Speaker 2: of him. But the thing about it is that, you know,
- 15:57Speaker 2: I thought throughout the season, I thought I'll played myself
- 16:00Speaker 2: into a position where people recognize who I was as
- 16:04Speaker 2: a player, and I thought I was the best player.
- 16:07Speaker 2: But I didn't think I was going to win the Heisman.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Like there was no way, you know, I was going
- 16:11Speaker 2: to win the Heisman overpaid man. It just wasn't It
- 16:14Speaker 2: wasn't going to happen. You know, the whole season coming in,
- 16:17Speaker 2: I think he had came back for his senior year
- 16:21Speaker 2: a year so you know, that was that was really
- 16:23Speaker 2: all of the talk, you.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Know, to finish business.
- 16:25Speaker 2: You hate man. He came back for us, you know,
- 16:27Speaker 2: his senior year, Like wow, what he's doing for the university.
- 16:30Speaker 2: He is coming back for his guys, and he's coming
- 16:32Speaker 2: back to win the Heisman Trophy. Like that was a
- 16:35Speaker 2: foregone conclusion. And so you know, season carried on. And
- 16:39Speaker 2: what was great is watching the thirty for thirty that
- 16:42Speaker 2: they just had came out and because a lot of
- 16:45Speaker 2: stuff you don't you don't remember, but they had that
- 16:49Speaker 2: that little ranking each week of who was ahead, like
- 16:52Speaker 2: you had Payton and then it was ship There was
- 16:57Speaker 2: a running back I saw, maybe it was Tavan Banks
- 16:59Speaker 2: or something, the Tavan and then like I was down
- 17:01Speaker 2: here at the bottom, and then I might move up,
- 17:02Speaker 2: and then Peyton may move down, and then this guy
- 17:04Speaker 2: may move up. So it was really interesting how it
- 17:06Speaker 2: kind of played out throughout the year. And then when
- 17:09Speaker 2: Michigan State happened and the one hand catch happened, then
- 17:12Speaker 2: I kind of stayed steady in a certain place, and
- 17:15Speaker 2: then Penn State happened. Playing both ways called a called
- 17:20Speaker 2: a touchdown. Past that game, I'm playing against Juror Vicious,
- 17:24Speaker 2: and I remember they asked me before that game, you know,
- 17:27Speaker 2: did I think before or after did I think I
- 17:29Speaker 2: was the best player in the country. I was like, yeah,
- 17:31Speaker 2: I'm the best player of the country, but still not
- 17:34Speaker 2: thinking they're gonna you know, I'm not winning put over. Yeah,
- 17:39Speaker 2: not gonna happen.
- 17:39Speaker 1: There's such a such a like a focused position driving numbers,
- 17:42Speaker 1: like it's.
- 17:44Speaker 2: A numbers game. It's a numbers game, you know, and
- 17:46Speaker 2: so and then how state happens and then here comes
- 17:50Speaker 2: you know, the ceremony, and it's like I'm there in
- 17:53Speaker 2: New York to have a good time hanging out with Randy,
- 17:56Speaker 2: hanging out with all the guys, and just this is
- 17:58Speaker 2: this is a cool experience. And then you know Rudy,
- 18:01Speaker 2: Rudy risk I believe it was opens an envelope and
- 18:04Speaker 2: it's like from Michigan. Oh man, it was like my
- 18:09Speaker 2: whole body just went limp. And if you watch it,
- 18:12Speaker 2: you see Randy on the side, He's like get up.
- 18:15Speaker 2: So he nudged me. I'm like, damn, I just would.
- 18:19Speaker 1: What was the highest you got on the list like
- 18:21Speaker 1: throughout the year to where maybe you had an inkling
- 18:24Speaker 1: like maybe there's a dot.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I think I think I got up. I think I
- 18:27Speaker 2: got up to one. I believe and but it kind
- 18:31Speaker 2: of it just rotated, so it's one and two, right,
- 18:34Speaker 2: maybe three then two than one. So it was it
- 18:37Speaker 2: was kind of cool, you know, to to see some
- 18:39Speaker 2: of the footage because, like I said, a lot of
- 18:41Speaker 2: that stuff, man, it's a long time ago for me,
- 18:43Speaker 2: but a lot of stuff you don't. You don't remember
- 18:46Speaker 2: interviews that you did, you know, certain things other people said.
- 18:51Speaker 2: So yeah, man, it was cool to relive that.
- 18:53Speaker 3: People don't talk about this. But like, you win the Heisman,
- 18:56Speaker 3: obviously it's such a surreal moment. Your blood's pumping, Like
- 18:59Speaker 3: how stressful, nervous for your giving the speech, accepting.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Your I didn't have Yeah, I didn't have nothing. I
- 19:05Speaker 2: had nothing. Yeah, I had nothing.
- 19:07Speaker 3: Thank you family. Yeah.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Probably without the footage, you probably doesn't even remember, like.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Well, I remember, you know, getting up and of course,
- 19:20Speaker 2: you know, thanking my mom and then and then I
- 19:22Speaker 2: know I probably did I made some reference to somebody
- 19:25Speaker 2: else who I thought should have won it but didn't
- 19:27Speaker 2: win it, and then finally they got it right or
- 19:29Speaker 2: something something crazy like that. But I didn't. I didn't
- 19:33Speaker 2: have a speech because I was like, like I said,
- 19:35Speaker 2: I'm here to just enjoy this moment.
- 19:37Speaker 1: And write nothing down.
- 19:39Speaker 2: It is kind of it's.
- 19:40Speaker 3: Kind of a bad look. Not a bad look, but
- 19:42Speaker 3: when they pull out.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. I don't like to do that.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Just as a general rule, I don't like to read
- 19:48Speaker 2: from anything. If I if I'm talking, I just like
- 19:50Speaker 2: to talk. But yeah, I went there, man, just.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Nothing, ma'am you When you think about like the colleg
- 20:00Speaker 3: football landscaping now on all the nil stuff, how would
- 20:05Speaker 3: you had to be going crazy? You'd have put you
- 20:07Speaker 3: would have been. I mean, you've been a seven figure cat.
- 20:09Speaker 2: I got, I got, I got one year.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Left you trying to get out. I got year the bench,
- 20:18Speaker 3: but I make seven figures plays.
- 20:20Speaker 1: How many players you think you give to a college
- 20:23Speaker 1: game in college? Right right now?
- 20:25Speaker 2: If you play college, I'll run that ship right now.
- 20:28Speaker 1: So you don't think you'd be blowing a hand me
- 20:29Speaker 1: out there?
- 20:31Speaker 3: Hey, listen, told you got a little as that beer.
- 20:36Speaker 2: A little bit, A little bit. I believe I still
- 20:39Speaker 2: run around a little bit. I still get after it. Yeah,
- 20:42Speaker 2: I give hey, I get I give him some work
- 20:44Speaker 2: out there straight up.
- 20:45Speaker 1: In college's playing corner.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I could play anything anything.
- 20:50Speaker 1: He'd be like, uh, Travis Hunter, I'd be like him.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Yeah, he truly plays both the ways. I think that
- 20:57Speaker 2: is like one hundred and thirty plus plays again, like crazy,
- 21:01Speaker 2: I tell people like I like dibbled and dabbled on offense.
- 21:04Speaker 2: I didn't play a whole lot offense. It just seems
- 21:06Speaker 2: like he plays of defense. Like literally, that's crazy.
- 21:12Speaker 1: When you don't come off the field, right, Yeah, that's
- 21:15Speaker 1: where do you think he's better suited on offense or defense?
- 21:18Speaker 2: Oh? Man, I think receiver. I think he's a nasty receiver.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I mean he's a good corner'll get me wrong, but
- 21:25Speaker 2: I see it's his his offensive skills. Man, I think
- 21:27Speaker 2: it's offensive skills dominate over his defensive skills.
- 21:31Speaker 1: What's interesting too, is like your story back when you
- 21:34Speaker 1: were you know, with your mom and coach and like
- 21:37Speaker 1: not playing like situations like that. I feel like these days,
- 21:40Speaker 1: like you could just if you're upset, you could just bounce.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Quick yea yeah, and not have any any repercussions. Like
- 21:47Speaker 2: it used to be where if you went to another
- 21:49Speaker 2: D one school you had to sit out a whole year.
- 21:51Speaker 2: And so now it's like what coach, Oh, I don't worry,
- 21:55Speaker 2: but I won't be here tomorrow you can just leave.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Do you think if.
- 21:59Speaker 3: You when you were a freshman ad mission that, like,
- 22:02Speaker 3: was there any time of time if there was an
- 22:05Speaker 3: opportunity to go on the transferport that you might mind.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Well, at that time we talked about with Coach car
- 22:09Speaker 2: So when I went back to my dorm room, it
- 22:11Speaker 2: was funny because we had a couple of guys who
- 22:13Speaker 2: visited the University of Miami.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Were you in West Quad?
- 22:16Speaker 2: I was in I was in West Squad. Yeah, And
- 22:19Speaker 2: so after practice, a couple of guys, my boys, Man,
- 22:23Speaker 2: what happened? I was like, Man, I don't know, man,
- 22:25Speaker 2: coach tripping? Man, I said, Man, I'm out of here. Man.
- 22:28Speaker 2: It was like what I said, Man, fuck this, Man,
- 22:30Speaker 2: I'm going to Miami. Man, I'm transferred out here. I
- 22:32Speaker 2: don't want to be here. Man, were going too, we Man,
- 22:36Speaker 2: let's do it serious. So we had like a little
- 22:38Speaker 2: mutiny going on for like twenty four hours.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Yeah, a little bit.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Like Man, I'm leaving. But uh, but I think that's
- 22:49Speaker 2: probably how it happens, you know, with a lot of guys.
- 22:51Speaker 2: You know, you have an altercation with a coach and
- 22:54Speaker 2: you go back to the room and there's nobody to
- 22:57Speaker 2: talk you down from that ledge and you're like, shum out,
- 23:00Speaker 2: I don't I don't got to deal with this. And
- 23:01Speaker 2: nowadays it's easier than ever to say I don't want
- 23:03Speaker 2: to deal with it.
- 23:04Speaker 3: It makes it so much more difficult to keep accountability
- 23:07Speaker 3: in a locker room that's so important in football together.
- 23:10Speaker 2: And that's what that's what hard, what what Michigan did
- 23:12Speaker 2: with and and the reason why I feel like they
- 23:15Speaker 2: want and we're so dominant is because they really had
- 23:18Speaker 2: grown men out there. You know what I'm saying. We
- 23:20Speaker 2: got a bunch of you know, junior seniors guys who
- 23:22Speaker 2: came back. And so if you look at what you know,
- 23:25Speaker 2: how a state is doing right now, they're they're trying
- 23:27Speaker 2: to you know, buy all these players, trying to get
- 23:29Speaker 2: all this this this quick fix. It's hard to it's
- 23:32Speaker 2: hard to build it that way, you know what I'm saying.
- 23:34Speaker 2: If you if you're trying to do that every year,
- 23:36Speaker 2: like you got to have you know, kind of a
- 23:38Speaker 2: nucleus of guys that are coming back and you can
- 23:40Speaker 2: build a program with. So it's gonna get harder and harder,
- 23:44Speaker 2: and you know for coaches to kind of maintain that
- 23:47Speaker 2: because there used to be truly like a loyalty to school.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Now it's just a loyalty to you and what you
- 23:56Speaker 2: can get, you know, trying to get the most out
- 23:58Speaker 2: of it for yourself. So so it's gonna be hard
- 24:00Speaker 2: for coaches.
- 24:00Speaker 3: That's an interesting thing, is like having loyalty to yourself
- 24:04Speaker 3: and your school even when you play. When we play
- 24:06Speaker 3: like that was still there, like you still wanted to
- 24:08Speaker 3: benefit yourself playing well and the team doing well is
- 24:11Speaker 3: you know at the same time. But now it's like
- 24:14Speaker 3: it's wild west. And with Ohio State the way they're
- 24:17Speaker 3: setting up this year, they're spending so much money in
- 24:19Speaker 3: an IL and bringing these guys in there. If they
- 24:22Speaker 3: don't essentially if they don't win the national championship, it's
- 24:25Speaker 3: it's right.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Yeah, So that's that's the That's definitely the type of
- 24:29Speaker 2: pressure that you put on yourself. If you say, all right,
- 24:31Speaker 2: I got the best guy out from here, the best
- 24:33Speaker 2: guy from here, best guy from here, and then you
- 24:35Speaker 2: get them all together and it doesn't work. It's like,
- 24:39Speaker 2: you know, people start looking at you real crazy, yeah,
- 24:43Speaker 2: and you like, go ahead.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I was just gonna know if you got more in college,
- 24:46Speaker 1: I was going to start to dabble in the NFL world, but.
- 24:49Speaker 3: A couple more things on college just this year. Sean
- 24:51Speaker 3: More obviously, like I'm a massive Sean More fan. I
- 24:54Speaker 3: think he deserved that job. They made the right Yeah
- 24:57Speaker 3: he is. He's the dude for for the university should
- 25:00Speaker 3: he lost a lot of players, like eighteen dudes gonna
- 25:02Speaker 3: get drafted, and then coaching staff and lost the DC
- 25:05Speaker 3: lost the string coach, which I think is like the
- 25:07Speaker 3: most devastating loss. Like herb with the opportunity to go
- 25:09Speaker 3: there and meet and talk at him.
- 25:11Speaker 2: He was kind of going starting the conditioning, Oh man,
- 25:14Speaker 2: it's my guy. Man.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Yeah, evaluates tips, knees, everything in the grading scale they
- 25:19Speaker 3: put everybody on. Like you walk away from that being like, damn,
- 25:22Speaker 3: I wish he was. Yeah, I was playing because it
- 25:24Speaker 3: was like a guy like this is a dude you
- 25:26Speaker 3: have for all of college and then in the off
- 25:28Speaker 3: season you're backing in arbor.
- 25:30Speaker 1: What.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I took my son up to a little two day
- 25:33Speaker 2: camp they had up there, and he just had a
- 25:35Speaker 2: you know, certain easy way that that he does pull ups. Ship.
- 25:38Speaker 2: I went back home and I was doing him that way.
- 25:39Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, that's the kind of guy
- 25:41Speaker 2: he was. Man.
- 25:41Speaker 3: So, yeah, what's like like like most reasonable expectation for
- 25:48Speaker 3: the University of Michigan in twenty twenty four season.
- 25:51Speaker 2: I think it's gonna be tough. You know, looking at
- 25:55Speaker 2: the schedule I was looking at the other day. We
- 25:57Speaker 2: got Texas coming in the second game.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Schedule to the USC right l A State, Ohio State
- 26:03Speaker 3: got Oregon tail.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and and you know, you just look at the Texas.
- 26:08Speaker 2: They have their guy, their quarterbacks coming back, you know
- 26:11Speaker 2: what I mean. So they have you know, what we
- 26:13Speaker 2: have is a lot of guys leaving. Our quarterback leaves.
- 26:16Speaker 2: You got a Texas team that just was in the
- 26:18Speaker 2: playoffs as well, they're still building building on that and
- 26:21Speaker 2: still have a lot of things in place. And then
- 26:22Speaker 2: they got their quarterback coming back. So I think it'll
- 26:26Speaker 2: it'll be it'll be tough sledding for him, just because
- 26:28Speaker 2: he's really rebuilding it. Like you said, there's nothing. I
- 26:31Speaker 2: don't think anything hurts some more than losing staff, losing
- 26:36Speaker 2: guys that were in there in place, you know, losing
- 26:38Speaker 2: uh being strength and conditioning coach, You lose your defensive coordinator.
- 26:43Speaker 2: You know, he's gone, uh, A few other guys have
- 26:47Speaker 2: have left as well. I think Jim's uh is it
- 26:51Speaker 2: jim Son that's on the on the staff that he
- 26:53Speaker 2: just left.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I don't know you would assume you're taking a couple
- 26:57Speaker 1: offensive guys.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Yeah, so a lot of guys left, man, So I
- 27:01Speaker 2: don't know it'd be it'll be interesting, but it's gonna
- 27:04Speaker 2: be a it's gonna be a tough slip to slip.
- 27:06Speaker 3: The uh and Arbor best place to go eat college kid.
- 27:10Speaker 3: I got the place in my head right now, but
- 27:11Speaker 3: I don't want to start well, I mean, n I
- 27:13Speaker 3: l no, no, no, no, no no. We're talking those little chips,
- 27:18Speaker 3: like those little coupons that.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Are like to well for me.
- 27:20Speaker 2: For me, it was cottage in cottage and did.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Hit Yeah, I don't think. I don't think.
- 27:25Speaker 3: We it's a little pizza spot. Did you guys get
- 27:27Speaker 3: the little pieces of paper the chips?
- 27:29Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 27:29Speaker 2: Fifteen bucks on ours?
- 27:30Speaker 3: Yeah see ours? Was you got like two medium pizzas
- 27:33Speaker 3: and like a soda or something like that. You go
- 27:34Speaker 3: smack one of those things barbecue. It was nice. We
- 27:38Speaker 3: are this podcast is mister spots.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Mister spots. Yeah, like mister Spots. But me, but me,
- 27:44Speaker 2: I was, I was it was pizza for me. Man. Yeah,
- 27:47Speaker 2: and cottage In they had they had the they had
- 27:49Speaker 2: the best pizza. And I always felt like cottage In
- 27:53Speaker 2: was out of all the places that we could get. So,
- 27:57Speaker 2: you know, he had mister spots, you had cottage In,
- 28:00Speaker 2: and we only had like four different places you can
- 28:02Speaker 2: go from. Like that one to me was like the most,
- 28:04Speaker 2: Like I felt like I was really doing something if
- 28:06Speaker 2: I went into college Cottagein and got something, you know
- 28:08Speaker 2: what I'm saying. The restaurant. Yeah, yeah, it was like, yeah,
- 28:12Speaker 2: you know, I felt like I was doing something, you
- 28:14Speaker 2: know what I mean? So cottage In was that deal.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Last last college go to the NFL Top five players
- 28:20Speaker 3: University of Michigan history, but not like obviously, like the
- 28:26Speaker 3: argument here would be Tom Brady. Would Tom Brady be
- 28:27Speaker 3: a top five Michigan football player?
- 28:30Speaker 2: Not a Michigan right right, right right?
- 28:33Speaker 3: But you have one, so you don't have to do
- 28:35Speaker 3: it yourself.
- 28:35Speaker 2: I got to put myself in there. Yeah, well we could.
- 28:39Speaker 2: I put myself in. Can I put myself in an
- 28:40Speaker 2: offense and defense and I can be.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Like that?
- 28:47Speaker 2: Oh man, that's that's pretty tough. I'm gonna say. Uh.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Desmond i'd have to go Anthony Carter. Mmmm, that's tough.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Let's get my man hutch in there, Steve Hutchison.
- 29:24Speaker 3: Mm hmmm, that sneaky with one maybe Jake Long.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Okay, so I got two receivers in right now, because
- 29:34Speaker 2: I've already smoked with that mold and I got to
- 29:35Speaker 2: Oh so that would be two offensive tackles, no choice
- 29:40Speaker 2: in the guard.
- 29:40Speaker 3: But also Blake Horn.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Yeah, because you got some recent guys in there, Let's
- 29:48Speaker 2: put Blake in there. Let's put Blake in there for
- 29:51Speaker 2: what he did, uh these last couple of seasons. And
- 29:54Speaker 2: he's rocking the deuce out there too. Let's do that.
- 29:57Speaker 2: So that's that's fine, right, that's fine. Okay.
- 30:00Speaker 1: The tough question it was helped me out. Was Blake's
- 30:03Speaker 1: stats overall better than heart?
- 30:06Speaker 2: Oh? Yes, I just remember the touchdown wise for sure,
- 30:11Speaker 2: I think because he got a bunch of touchdowns.
- 30:14Speaker 3: By any Michigan players.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and he.
- 30:16Speaker 3: Like I think he blew it up. I don't think
- 30:18Speaker 3: he blew it out. I think he be about one
- 30:19Speaker 3: or two.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Yeah, but did it.
- 30:20Speaker 3: With only like three years starting as opposed to that
- 30:23Speaker 3: Anthony Thomas, Yeah, he was at like fifty five four
- 30:28Speaker 3: year starter and he got like fifty seven.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Six Mike did.
- 30:35Speaker 3: It was real?
- 30:39Speaker 2: What the what the core? All right? Yeah? But the
- 30:49Speaker 2: thing is, even even though you have the all the
- 30:52Speaker 2: yards and stuff, it's still about impact too. Yeah, Like
- 30:55Speaker 2: his impact on the team is one of those things
- 30:57Speaker 2: that you know, it might not be top five and
- 31:00Speaker 2: Russian or whatever, but his impact on coming back, you
- 31:04Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. And then his impact just just
- 31:06Speaker 2: his presence on the field. Man, So like my man, Yeah, yeah, I.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Don't even I mean, you had such an incredible NFL
- 31:14Speaker 1: career as well, it's kind of like hard to focus
- 31:16Speaker 1: on something or start somewhere. But I am curious, Like
- 31:20Speaker 1: you're one of the greatest Raiders of all time, and
- 31:22Speaker 1: then you had that stint in Green Bay where you
- 31:24Speaker 1: played a lot of good ball, and then you come
- 31:25Speaker 1: back to Oakland like when you were in a hit
- 31:28Speaker 1: free agency, like you were somebody who were friend you
- 31:30Speaker 1: were franchise tagged, right yep, So like was there when
- 31:34Speaker 1: you left Oakland the first time? Was there like bitterness
- 31:37Speaker 1: with the organization when going to Green Bay? Like because
- 31:40Speaker 1: you obviously came back around to Oakland, but being such
- 31:42Speaker 1: a great player for them when they kind of like,
- 31:44Speaker 1: let you go elsewhere. Was there like any resentment? Was
- 31:47Speaker 1: there any bitterness of the business per se?
- 31:52Speaker 2: Yeah, kind of because I never thought that I would
- 31:56Speaker 2: leave Oakland, and the bitterness was more so with you know,
- 32:02Speaker 2: like the GM at the time, so not necessarily just Raiders.
- 32:05Speaker 2: It was just the GM, you know, And I think
- 32:07Speaker 2: at that time, you know, you know, they you know,
- 32:11Speaker 2: told my agents or something something that there was you know,
- 32:14Speaker 2: no value to bringing me back to the Raiders, and
- 32:16Speaker 2: that was coming from from that side, and so it
- 32:19Speaker 2: was like, you know what I'm saying, what are you
- 32:22Speaker 2: talking about? So, yeah, it was it was a little
- 32:25Speaker 2: bit bitterness in that regard. But I was also like
- 32:30Speaker 2: I said, I didn't think I would leave there. But
- 32:32Speaker 2: then it was I've got franchise tagged, so I was free,
- 32:36Speaker 2: so I could go anywhere. So I thought that, you know,
- 32:39Speaker 2: I was going to have my my picket or litter
- 32:41Speaker 2: you know, anywhere I wanted to go. You know, I
- 32:44Speaker 2: was gonna be able to go. And it, man, it
- 32:46Speaker 2: was it was dry as this hear out there, you
- 32:49Speaker 2: know what I mean, Yeah, it was. It was kind
- 32:52Speaker 2: of crazy. And so you know, I went in thinking
- 32:54Speaker 2: one thing, and then my experience wasn't all that great,
- 32:58Speaker 2: you know. And so through the process, green Bay began
- 33:03Speaker 2: to call my agents and and you know, wanted to
- 33:06Speaker 2: bring me in, and you know, I was reluctant. I
- 33:09Speaker 2: was like, nah, you know, I'm not going to Green Bay.
- 33:11Speaker 2: So there was no really no really no reason for
- 33:13Speaker 2: me to visit there and so called again. And when
- 33:17Speaker 2: everything was really like quiet from from everyone else, you know,
- 33:21Speaker 2: I had my agent reaching out to other people and
- 33:24Speaker 2: nobody was biting. So I was like, all right, well,
- 33:26Speaker 2: let me go to Green Bay because we got to
- 33:28Speaker 2: at least try to draw some interest from I'll go there.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Maybe somebody else will be like, all right, well some
- 33:33Speaker 2: other people are checking form. Man. It was it was crazy, yo.
- 33:38Speaker 2: But if green Bay didn't want me, I don't. I
- 33:40Speaker 2: really don't know where where I would have played in
- 33:43Speaker 2: two thousand and six. It really, yeah, really.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Why do you think it was so dry? Like the
- 33:48Speaker 3: free agency market?
- 33:49Speaker 2: There were you know, just there was a lot of
- 33:51Speaker 2: a lot of things out there. One I had I
- 33:53Speaker 2: did come off an injury. I broke my leg in
- 33:56Speaker 2: two thousand and five, so I missed the final ten
- 33:58Speaker 2: games of the season and then people talked about my
- 34:03Speaker 2: attitude and talked about you know, just a lot of
- 34:06Speaker 2: different different things and so, and I think some of
- 34:10Speaker 2: that came from the raider side as well, just you know,
- 34:12Speaker 2: putting some stuff out there conversation, you know, right right,
- 34:18Speaker 2: right right. Because because Mike McCarthy asked when I first
- 34:22Speaker 2: met with Mike, because it was his first I think
- 34:24Speaker 2: it was his first year, was my first year, he
- 34:26Speaker 2: asked me about it in our meeting. He was like, oh,
- 34:27Speaker 2: what is this about you, you know, being a bad
- 34:29Speaker 2: bad team guy, bad locker room guy. And I was like, what, Like, man,
- 34:34Speaker 2: you can't talk to any players I played with that's
- 34:36Speaker 2: say I'm a I'm a bad locker room guy. So
- 34:38Speaker 2: I don't know where that's coming from. So there was
- 34:40Speaker 2: some things being you know put out there. Uh that
- 34:43Speaker 2: muddy the water and so yeah, it was just it
- 34:46Speaker 2: was a it was a little tough, tough period man
- 34:49Speaker 2: to kind of go through as a guy who I
- 34:51Speaker 2: had done everything, you know. Oh yeah, so I'm like, damn,
- 34:55Speaker 2: that's how they that's how they really feel.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Yeah, did you did you have any more moments that
- 35:00Speaker 1: you felt like they were defining you by that you
- 35:03Speaker 1: might have had lower moments while being on the Raiders
- 35:05Speaker 1: that allowed them to say, what's this about you being
- 35:07Speaker 1: a bad team guy?
- 35:09Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, I mean I had some asshole in me.
- 35:12Speaker 2: I ain't gonna say that. Yeah, But but in terms
- 35:15Speaker 2: of you know, player and you know, uh, guys in
- 35:20Speaker 2: the locker room. Nah, it wouldn't have it wouldn't have
- 35:26Speaker 2: been from that. But yeah, I mean I had my
- 35:28Speaker 2: I have my my issues with coaches at times. You know,
- 35:33Speaker 2: I like to hang out, do my thing, you know
- 35:35Speaker 2: what I'm saying, outside of playing football. So you know,
- 35:38Speaker 2: maybe that could have had something to do with it.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Who knows, But in terms of being able to play
- 35:43Speaker 2: the game, and you know, just overall, you know, good dude,
- 35:47Speaker 2: I'm a good dude, you know what I'm saying.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Can you speak to like your development in the the
- 35:53Speaker 1: film room, because obviously, like you're a guy, you were,
- 35:55Speaker 1: you were an All American coming out, Heisman Trophy winner,
- 35:58Speaker 1: top five pick, like you have all the accolades, right,
- 36:01Speaker 1: Like it's like, oh, he's the most He's just so talented.
- 36:03Speaker 1: He's super talented. But I'm also fortunate enough to play
- 36:05Speaker 1: with Will Blackman for a couple of years. And when
- 36:07Speaker 1: Will and I we'd have our sushi knights and stuff,
- 36:11Speaker 1: but he would talk about you as somebody who's always
- 36:13Speaker 1: like a last in the building, and he would learn
- 36:15Speaker 1: a lot of his study habits from you. You feel
- 36:18Speaker 1: like you had those throughout your entire career. You developed
- 36:21Speaker 1: him as you got older, because he always said the
- 36:24Speaker 1: best things about you. I feel like something like that,
- 36:26Speaker 1: like being a student of the game, kind of gets
- 36:28Speaker 1: slept on when you're somebody who has all the accolades.
- 36:30Speaker 2: In the world. Yeah, I think it compounds over time
- 36:33Speaker 2: because you do start out, you know, like myself, I
- 36:37Speaker 2: was a great athlete, so a lot of stuff's going
- 36:39Speaker 2: to come easy, you know, so you don't necessarily have
- 36:41Speaker 2: to spend as much time looking at certain things. But
- 36:45Speaker 2: the one thing that I've always had as a player
- 36:48Speaker 2: was I've had great play recall, you know what I mean.
- 36:51Speaker 2: So when you're out there on the field and you
- 36:52Speaker 2: see certain things, you start to pick up on tendencies
- 36:56Speaker 2: like I always had that without necessarily having to look
- 36:59Speaker 2: at film. And so then you know, as your career
- 37:02Speaker 2: goes on, you take different different methods from different coaches
- 37:07Speaker 2: like Vance Befford, Like I remember, you know, just going
- 37:11Speaker 2: back to a certain play. We played Northwestern my junior
- 37:14Speaker 2: year and it was a third and long situation and
- 37:18Speaker 2: me and him had went over what they liked to
- 37:20Speaker 2: do in that situation and they ran out and I
- 37:22Speaker 2: picked that out off. So different things you pick up
- 37:24Speaker 2: from different coaches. Chuck Burgano was another guy who worked
- 37:28Speaker 2: on me on third down as well, you know, being
- 37:30Speaker 2: around him, I learned a lot on third down tendencies,
- 37:33Speaker 2: you know that being money down and so over time,
- 37:38Speaker 2: then you start developing your own style of how you
- 37:41Speaker 2: like to see things. And so for me, like I said,
- 37:44Speaker 2: I always had, you know, good play. Recall what I
- 37:48Speaker 2: would start to do in my studies. I would start
- 37:50Speaker 2: to watch the game from the opposing team's one yard
- 37:54Speaker 2: line all the way to the one yard line, but
- 37:57Speaker 2: then the same personnel. So I wanted to see from
- 38:00Speaker 2: the one to the one, same person I want to
- 38:02Speaker 2: see it in all parts of the field because you'll
- 38:04Speaker 2: run certain things from first to five, first to ten,
- 38:07Speaker 2: ten to twenty twenty to forty forty to twenty twenty two.
- 38:10Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, and a lot of it
- 38:12Speaker 2: mirrors what you do from here to here, you know
- 38:15Speaker 2: what I mean. So like you take a wheel for example.
- 38:19Speaker 2: You know, I would have my film broken up certain ways,
- 38:23Speaker 2: and then I would tell those guys, this is how
- 38:24Speaker 2: I like to look at the film. And so we would,
- 38:26Speaker 2: you know, when we'd have our times together in our
- 38:28Speaker 2: film room, we would look at the film and then
- 38:30Speaker 2: we start going over these things. When and when I
- 38:32Speaker 2: would see something that would kind of they may get
- 38:36Speaker 2: to it a different way, but it's the same thing.
- 38:38Speaker 2: Would I would go back to it, all right, Now
- 38:40Speaker 2: watch this. Watch how this team lines up on this
- 38:43Speaker 2: plane runs it. Now watch them motion to it and
- 38:45Speaker 2: run it. But it's the same thing, you know. So
- 38:48Speaker 2: I was always taught it's not how you line up,
- 38:50Speaker 2: it's how you wind up. So those are the things
- 38:53Speaker 2: that I was able to, you know, pass along to
- 38:55Speaker 2: those guys. And for me, it's just over time, it
- 38:58Speaker 2: was I got gradually even better at it.
- 39:02Speaker 1: You know, you found like another way to prepare them
- 39:04Speaker 1: be like, okay, added to your game and that that
- 39:06Speaker 1: fires me up as a defensive guy. That's that's that's
- 39:09Speaker 1: football porn right there.
- 39:10Speaker 3: It seems like you had a good way of simplifying
- 39:12Speaker 3: things exactly, emotions and stuff like that. This is the
- 39:14Speaker 3: same thing, just a little extra dressing on it, like
- 39:16Speaker 3: to go back to like the you know, tough locker
- 39:20Speaker 3: room guy, or these being put into a box of
- 39:22Speaker 3: a category of your character. For Charles Woodson, how when
- 39:27Speaker 3: you're hearing these things from different coaches from different gms,
- 39:30Speaker 3: like how did you was that like motivation for you?
- 39:32Speaker 3: Like I'll prove you wrong and this is why or
- 39:35Speaker 3: how do you handle those types of things when someone
- 39:37Speaker 3: might be putting you in a corner and saying you're
- 39:39Speaker 3: like this, when you truly don't feel you're like that.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Actually I was kind of I was hurt, man, you
- 39:43Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. Yeah, that kind of hurt, you
- 39:45Speaker 2: know because I never, throughout my whole life, had never
- 39:49Speaker 2: been in a position where people doubted me. You know
- 39:53Speaker 2: what I'm saying, that never, And so that was that
- 39:56Speaker 2: was a period where it was like there was there
- 39:58Speaker 2: was some doubt cast over me as a as a as
- 40:00Speaker 2: a football player. Now you may not like me as
- 40:04Speaker 2: a person or whatever that is, but like on the
- 40:07Speaker 2: football field, like to have somebody say, man, he can't
- 40:10Speaker 2: do that anymore. He's always heard he's injury prone, he's that,
- 40:13Speaker 2: and that's like damn, Like that that kind of that
- 40:16Speaker 2: kind of broke me down a little bit. And so
- 40:19Speaker 2: when I when I first got to Green Bay, you know,
- 40:22Speaker 2: there was just a period in there where I was like, damn,
- 40:27Speaker 2: I don't I don't even want to play football anymore,
- 40:29Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. So at Green Bay, Yeah,
- 40:31Speaker 2: when I when I first got there and I first signed,
- 40:34Speaker 2: you know, I called a few people who are close
- 40:37Speaker 2: to me and I was like, yeah, I think I'm
- 40:39Speaker 2: I think I'm gonna hang it up. And and it
- 40:42Speaker 2: was my uh my agent at the time, Kevin Posting.
- 40:47Speaker 2: He uh he said, hey, man, he said, you signed
- 40:51Speaker 2: the contract, right. I was like, yeah, I signed the contract.
- 40:53Speaker 2: He was like, well, that's like giving your word. And
- 40:56Speaker 2: I was like yeah. He was like, you at least
- 40:59Speaker 2: at least need to play one at least play one year.
- 41:01Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, Because you've signed the contract,
- 41:03Speaker 2: you gave me your word at least need to play
- 41:05Speaker 2: one year. And so I was like, yeah, you know what,
- 41:07Speaker 2: that makes sense. That makes sense. So, you know, I
- 41:11Speaker 2: got through that little period and then you know, things
- 41:14Speaker 2: just kind of just started to take off and slow
- 41:16Speaker 2: down in Green Bay, where I was like, all right,
- 41:19Speaker 2: I'm back.
- 41:19Speaker 1: You guys had a good team too. It looked fun,
- 41:22Speaker 1: like everybody talked about your schematics defensively, why m I
- 41:26Speaker 1: forget his name?
- 41:27Speaker 2: Coordinator, Well, that was later you're talking about Dom Capers. Okay,
- 41:30Speaker 2: that was later on when I first got there was
- 41:32Speaker 2: another guy. But we but in terms of having fun,
- 41:35Speaker 2: we had we had a great group, especially secondary wise,
- 41:39Speaker 2: Al Harris, Nick Collins, Tremion Williams had just come in
- 41:46Speaker 2: some young some other young guys are tarry big beats,
- 41:48Speaker 2: so like our secondary you know, then young will comes in.
- 41:53Speaker 2: We had just some young, good guys on that secondary
- 41:56Speaker 2: man and uh, it was great because you know when
- 41:59Speaker 2: you talk about I had some young guys that kind
- 42:01Speaker 2: of looked up to me, and so you know, kind
- 42:04Speaker 2: of watching what I did, and you talk about the
- 42:06Speaker 2: film study and all of those sorts of things. So
- 42:09Speaker 2: then it really became fun because because then it was
- 42:11Speaker 2: almost like a responsibility. How am I going to get
- 42:14Speaker 2: to help these guys, you know, get to the next level.
- 42:17Speaker 2: And it was really about going out there and showing
- 42:19Speaker 2: them for the most part. But then just those little
- 42:21Speaker 2: things like you know, finding your own way to watch
- 42:25Speaker 2: the film that makes it easier for you, right, and
- 42:28Speaker 2: then you grow from there?
- 42:29Speaker 3: When did you find that transition of like when you
- 42:32Speaker 3: first set in the league and you get in a
- 42:33Speaker 3: locker with a bunch of NFL players, you're like, oh shit,
- 42:35Speaker 3: that's the so and so, Oh that's this guy. And
- 42:37Speaker 3: then eventually it flips where people and they're a fan
- 42:40Speaker 3: of you now yea, yeah, yeah, now you're Yeah, you're young,
- 42:43Speaker 3: You're the dude that people are like, yo, let me
- 42:44Speaker 3: watch film with you? And like where where do you
- 42:47Speaker 3: think that switch turned for you in your NFL career?
- 42:50Speaker 3: Was like, Okay, I'm now the guy that's supposed to
- 42:52Speaker 3: be leading, not following, if following for lack of a
- 42:54Speaker 3: better work, because youre always gonna do you when you're young,
- 42:57Speaker 3: it's just like you're looking up to these guys. Now
- 42:58Speaker 3: guys you're looking up to you.
- 43:00Speaker 2: It was it probably started around six years in because
- 43:04Speaker 2: that's when because so when I first came in, like
- 43:09Speaker 2: Tim Brown, Tim Brown's in the locker room, you know
- 43:11Speaker 2: what I'm saying. Yeah, Napoleon Kaufman who watched in college
- 43:14Speaker 2: and then he was with the Raiders. Who else do
- 43:18Speaker 2: we have? Man, Dude? I just saw him too. Uh,
- 43:26Speaker 2: I think of it a minute, but in a minute,
- 43:27Speaker 2: but Russell Maryland, uh, Pat Swilling, it was it was crazy,
- 43:36Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, because because when you're when
- 43:37Speaker 2: you're young, you don't you don't think you'll catch those
- 43:39Speaker 2: guys because it seems like it seems like as far away.
- 43:42Speaker 2: And then Jerry Rice came in, like, holy s these
- 43:46Speaker 2: dudes are in the same locker room, you know. And
- 43:48Speaker 2: so then around six years in then those guys are gone.
- 43:53Speaker 2: Tim's gone, uh, Jerry's uh, He's gone. Now, so now
- 43:59Speaker 2: those those older guys are kind of peeling off, and
- 44:03Speaker 2: so now you're starting to be one of the older guys.
- 44:05Speaker 2: And so then it kind of becomes oh, man, you know,
- 44:08Speaker 2: I used to watch you. Then as you get older,
- 44:11Speaker 2: you get the green Bay. Oh man, yea, I used
- 44:13Speaker 2: to watch you. And then all of a sudden, your
- 44:15Speaker 2: grandpa he's like, damn.
- 44:20Speaker 3: Rookie comes in there, like ya, I used to watch
- 44:22Speaker 3: you in high school. Yeah, yeah, high school really have
- 44:26Speaker 3: been for a while.
- 44:28Speaker 2: No doubt.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Who are some of the best leaders you've been around?
- 44:31Speaker 1: And maybe they weren't the biggest names either, but who
- 44:33Speaker 1: are some of the best leaders that you've been around.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Like Tim Brown was a great leader. I thought that
- 44:46Speaker 2: one of my favorite guys who was who was with
- 44:48Speaker 2: the Raiders when I first got there was Eric Turner,
- 44:52Speaker 2: you know who who passed away maybe like my maybe
- 44:57Speaker 2: like second second or third year and NFL Eric Allen.
- 45:02Speaker 2: You know, tremendous guys like I feel like when I
- 45:05Speaker 2: came in, we had we had like real real veterans
- 45:10Speaker 2: of the game. You know what I'm saying. You know
- 45:12Speaker 2: guys who you know had been through a lot and
- 45:16Speaker 2: just you know, they they respected the game, you know
- 45:19Speaker 2: what I mean? Yeah, I have respect for the people
- 45:21Speaker 2: who came before them, Like I played with those kind
- 45:24Speaker 2: of guys man, And so I would say, those are
- 45:27Speaker 2: the guys who you know come off at the top
- 45:29Speaker 2: off the top of my mind. When I first got in.
- 45:32Speaker 3: You had you had two boys, right, I got too boys?
- 45:34Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 45:34Speaker 3: Two boys? How has it been with them starting to
- 45:38Speaker 3: play sports? And you kind of like, hey, the expectation
- 45:43Speaker 3: is not to win a Heisman and the Defensive Player
- 45:45Speaker 3: of the year, first round pick, Like how do you
- 45:46Speaker 3: temper those expectations when your kids are looking up to
- 45:49Speaker 3: you as a father. I want to be like you
- 45:51Speaker 3: in succeed you essentially.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny because I have the conversation with him,
- 45:57Speaker 2: and it's funny because there's two different responses. So, you know,
- 46:01Speaker 2: I can tell my my oldest you know, hey man,
- 46:03Speaker 2: you know, look, you got all the talent in the world.
- 46:07Speaker 2: You know, you'll be compared. We got the same name,
- 46:10Speaker 2: you know, but you can't worry about that. You know,
- 46:12Speaker 2: you just got to go do your thing. Whatever's gonna
- 46:14Speaker 2: happen is gonna happen. It's like, okay, yeah, that appreciate it.
- 46:17Speaker 2: I tell my youngest son, hey man, you know, you
- 46:19Speaker 2: don't gotta you don't got to be this or that
- 46:22Speaker 2: that I'm gonna be in the Hall of Fame with you.
- 46:23Speaker 2: So I'm like, cool, you know what I'm saying. You
- 46:30Speaker 2: gotta speak at first, you know what I mean.
- 46:32Speaker 3: So are you like, hey, you guys have to go
- 46:33Speaker 3: to Michigan?
- 46:35Speaker 2: Uh kind of unofficially Yeah.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Yeah, if if they're highly recruited.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Man, well, I you know I do. I do tell
- 46:45Speaker 2: those guys. Man, Listen, I want you to be able
- 46:48Speaker 2: to make your own decision wherever you you know, when
- 46:51Speaker 2: it comes to that point. But there's just one place
- 46:53Speaker 2: you can't go you know what I'm saying, Come.
- 46:58Speaker 3: On, can't go hypothetic? Cool? For whatever reason, your kids
- 47:02Speaker 3: are playing they're playing ball. They're getting offers, but they're
- 47:04Speaker 3: like small D one offers. You're getting some Max, you're
- 47:06Speaker 3: getting some some app state type of ones. But there
- 47:10Speaker 3: was one big team that comes in and happens.
- 47:13Speaker 2: To be But here's my question, though, why would you
- 47:19Speaker 2: ask that question?
- 47:25Speaker 1: Yeah, the Ohio States are taking a shot.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, full right.
- 47:30Speaker 3: Oh yeah, we're talking about a in I ling ground.
- 47:38Speaker 2: But hey, in I l full right, nobody else is calling.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Might have to think about it.
- 47:43Speaker 1: That would be so tough walk in the Stadium's so
- 47:46Speaker 1: tough for him wearing red.
- 47:48Speaker 2: I'm gonna yeah, I'm gonna watch from the blimp.
- 47:53Speaker 3: Yeah, you have to watch from home.
- 47:58Speaker 1: That's funny. Ask a good question. That'd be hard. Were
- 48:02Speaker 1: you in Green Bay with Favan Rogers?
- 48:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I first got there. FARV was there?
- 48:06Speaker 1: What was that drama? Like, you know, everybody got to
- 48:09Speaker 1: see you know, far retires, he comes back. You know
- 48:11Speaker 1: they never you know, they wouldn't see eyed eye. There's
- 48:14Speaker 1: obviously been a lot of public conversation and and like
- 48:17Speaker 1: transparency or subjective opinion around it, like what was it
- 48:20Speaker 1: like or like being kind of like in that drama
- 48:23Speaker 1: or around it.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Well, I think for I think the guys on the
- 48:27Speaker 2: defensive side, we didn't really pay attention to it because
- 48:30Speaker 2: it's more, you know, he's in the you know, Bretton
- 48:34Speaker 2: and a Ride, They're in the meetings together all the time.
- 48:37Speaker 2: They're always on the offensive side. So we really didn't
- 48:39Speaker 2: We really didn't get into that portion of it. The
- 48:43Speaker 2: most interaction, like for myself with a Ride is a
- 48:47Speaker 2: Ride was on the practice squad, and so he would
- 48:49Speaker 2: always go against our defense. So that was really all
- 48:53Speaker 2: I really paid attention to. Was that part of it.
- 48:57Speaker 2: Now I remember that, you know that was U talks
- 49:01Speaker 2: of you know, Brett saying he doesn't really need to help,
- 49:04Speaker 2: you know, the guy that they just drafted basically to
- 49:07Speaker 2: replace him. But I never really laid eyes on like
- 49:12Speaker 2: visible tension between them because I wasn't paying attention to it,
- 49:16Speaker 2: you know what I mean. So, yeah, it wasn't It
- 49:19Speaker 2: wasn't anything that I really could comment on because I
- 49:24Speaker 2: was I wasn't in the middle of I didn't care,
- 49:26Speaker 2: to be honest, that's fair. I mean, I'm trying to
- 49:30Speaker 2: I'm trying to win the super Bowl. And and usually
- 49:32Speaker 2: it's a coach.
- 49:33Speaker 1: It's like, hey, we got a pretty good one over
- 49:34Speaker 1: here in twelve and you're just thinking like, yeah, he
- 49:36Speaker 1: does a good job practice, but we should be there
- 49:38Speaker 1: picking this ball off right now.
- 49:39Speaker 2: And and we knew it, man, we knew it right away.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Like when when Brett was kind of enter out, you know,
- 49:44Speaker 2: coming back or not coming back, and we would play
- 49:46Speaker 2: we would play, you know, against a Rod uh in
- 49:49Speaker 2: those practices, and it was like, oh, yeah, when when
- 49:55Speaker 2: Brett Lee's we're gonna we're gonna be We're gonna be.
- 50:00Speaker 3: Spoiled quarterback Francis.
- 50:02Speaker 2: Yeah, Rogers found found another one that looks.
- 50:05Speaker 3: Like, yeah, as you transitioned out of football, like how
- 50:08Speaker 3: difficult was it for you to like did you feel
- 50:12Speaker 3: completely fulfilled throughout your NFL career or was there a
- 50:15Speaker 3: point when you first left where you're like you're lacking
- 50:17Speaker 3: fulfillment the competitive nature that first ball, not playing ball,
- 50:20Speaker 3: Like how did you handle that?
- 50:22Speaker 2: No? Uh, well, two great things. One, I won a
- 50:25Speaker 2: super Bowl. So I think had I retired and not
- 50:29Speaker 2: won a super Bowl, then I would always think about, man,
- 50:32Speaker 2: what if what if you would have, could have should.
- 50:35Speaker 3: Right now that hurts sitting on this side of the couch.
- 50:37Speaker 2: Yah changed championship. Yeah so now, yeah, so I got that.
- 50:48Speaker 2: And then when I retired, you know, I didn't I
- 50:53Speaker 2: really didn't know what what I was gonna do after
- 50:54Speaker 2: I retired. But what happened was, you know, you get
- 50:57Speaker 2: these these uh these articles that they they write up
- 51:00Speaker 2: about current players who are retiring who may be good
- 51:03Speaker 2: on television, And so after I retired, I went right
- 51:07Speaker 2: into television right I started working for ESPN. So I
- 51:10Speaker 2: really didn't have time to really like be retired and
- 51:15Speaker 2: be scared about that whole transition because I really went
- 51:19Speaker 2: right into something. So I would say, I'm very fortunate
- 51:22Speaker 2: that that happened because I didn't have to sit around
- 51:24Speaker 2: like looking back at oh man, I don't have anything
- 51:27Speaker 2: to do. You know, football is gone, you know, So
- 51:29Speaker 2: I was I was blessed to have that happen. And
- 51:32Speaker 2: then third, I would say, I played eighteen years, and
- 51:38Speaker 2: so you know, you know what I'm saying, Yeah, I
- 51:45Speaker 2: played eighteen years, and so I feel like the the
- 51:49Speaker 2: thing for me that I always think about is that
- 51:53Speaker 2: I remember the morning when I knew I was done
- 51:55Speaker 2: playing and it was against Detroit. We're in Detroit, and
- 51:58Speaker 2: remember looking out the window was snowing and Detroit in
- 52:03Speaker 2: the dome, so it don't it don't matter. But I
- 52:05Speaker 2: remember looking out and saying, man, if they canceled the
- 52:09Speaker 2: game to day, I would be okay. And as soon
- 52:12Speaker 2: as I said that to myself, I was like, it's over.
- 52:15Speaker 2: And so that morning that day, I mentally I retired.
- 52:22Speaker 2: So I always say that I actually had that was
- 52:25Speaker 2: like the tenth game of the season. I actually had
- 52:27Speaker 2: six more games where I was able to play after
- 52:30Speaker 2: I retired, So I fulfilled myself as a player, and
- 52:33Speaker 2: then I got to come out of retirement and play
- 52:35Speaker 2: again for six more games. So dude, I my journey
- 52:40Speaker 2: has been. I wouldn't trade it. You know what I'm saying.
- 52:44Speaker 2: I wouldn't trade it.
- 52:45Speaker 3: So and when you were talking about, hey, I'm gonna rap,
- 52:48Speaker 3: I'm gonna be done my career, what year was that,
- 52:51Speaker 3: fifteen twenty fifteen, So that's I mean, imagine walk away
- 52:54Speaker 3: from the game when you were with the Packers.
- 52:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I'm good. That would have been Yeah, eight years.
- 53:01Speaker 2: I would have played eight years and I wouldn't be
- 53:04Speaker 2: on busting with the boys. Yeah, bro, yeah, hey, hey,
- 53:08Speaker 2: you guys will be you'd be like, remember that one
- 53:11Speaker 2: guy he went in the heis Minute. Remember what was
- 53:13Speaker 2: his name?
- 53:17Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 53:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah yeah yeah Bro.
- 53:21Speaker 3: What got you transitioned into being an entrepreneur with the
- 53:24Speaker 3: wine and the whiskey?
- 53:25Speaker 2: Yeah, So I got into the wine early. Man. When
- 53:29Speaker 2: I was with the Raiders, our training camp was in
- 53:31Speaker 2: Naple Valley, and so you know, each year training camp,
- 53:35Speaker 2: I was out in about you know, great restaurants all
- 53:38Speaker 2: over the valley and everyone was drinking wine like all
- 53:41Speaker 2: the time, like morning, noon, and night, always drinking wine.
- 53:45Speaker 2: So I just got really interested in it and created
- 53:47Speaker 2: my first label in two thousand and five, and then
- 53:53Speaker 2: around two thousand and seventeen eighteen, Intercept was born. So
- 53:59Speaker 2: that so first, so I was coming out of Naple
- 54:01Speaker 2: Valley now it's in Passo Rubbles. And then, uh, I
- 54:04Speaker 2: kind of always wanted the spirit to be a part
- 54:06Speaker 2: of you know, just my experience, and so a few
- 54:09Speaker 2: years back I met my partner of mine now and
- 54:13Speaker 2: uh we started sourcing whiskey out of Kentucky and uh
- 54:17Speaker 2: that's where Woodson Whiskey was born. So, man, if I
- 54:21Speaker 2: don't go to if I don't go to the Raiders.
- 54:26Speaker 2: I'm probably not into wine and probably not into whiskey.
- 54:29Speaker 2: So it's one of those things where there was an opportunity.
- 54:33Speaker 2: I don't know why I saw it, but I saw
- 54:35Speaker 2: it and then Bam, here we go.
- 54:37Speaker 3: We'll meant to ask him.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Uh yeah, oh man, he can he We got you
- 54:42Speaker 2: got any cups? We got something you got that you
- 54:45Speaker 2: gotta have some.
- 54:46Speaker 1: You gotta talk about your relationship with the with the
- 54:48Speaker 1: Mark Davis.
- 54:50Speaker 2: Yeah, great, great relationship with Mark. Man.
- 54:53Speaker 1: Are you Raiders over Michigan.
- 54:56Speaker 2: I'm I'm a Raider fan, man, I'm not Raiders over.
- 54:58Speaker 2: I can't do Raiders over Michigan right right, you know.
- 55:02Speaker 1: I mean you're like one of us. You're like, you're
- 55:03Speaker 1: obviously an ambassador, but yeah, you're always in You're always
- 55:06Speaker 1: in the mix.
- 55:06Speaker 2: With the with the Silver, always in the mix man.
- 55:08Speaker 2: And uh, you know, it's just all about you know,
- 55:11Speaker 2: respect thing. You know, Mark respected the way that I
- 55:13Speaker 2: played the game. I think you appreciate it. You know
- 55:16Speaker 2: when I came back the second time around and you know,
- 55:21Speaker 2: he had taken over and just you know, playing on
- 55:24Speaker 2: some teams that we didn't have a lot, but just
- 55:27Speaker 2: watching myself go out there every week, you know, sometimes
- 55:30Speaker 2: banged up fingers, messed up ribs and all that. He's like, man,
- 55:34Speaker 2: you showed the guys what it was like, you know,
- 55:36Speaker 2: to be a Raider. So yeah, that's awesome. Raiders do
- 55:41Speaker 2: a fantastic jime.
- 55:42Speaker 1: Mean, I only played a total of like maybe ten
- 55:44Speaker 1: twelve games.
- 55:45Speaker 2: For the break. I do have a break. I got
- 55:48Speaker 2: a break.
- 55:48Speaker 1: But going off that, I feel like the Raiders do
- 55:50Speaker 1: such a fantastic job of like taking care.
- 55:52Speaker 2: Of bringing back to guys once the raider always a
- 55:55Speaker 2: rady Yeah you hear it. Yeah, you would have been
- 55:59Speaker 2: a great raider man.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, there there is some, there are some,
- 56:04Speaker 1: there's some.
- 56:06Speaker 2: Absolutely this is my commemorative battle. So this is only
- 56:11Speaker 2: uh this this is only sold in the BATA. This
- 56:15Speaker 2: one right here, only sold in the BATA. So this
- 56:17Speaker 2: is a two year straight whiskey coming straight out of uh,
- 56:21Speaker 2: straight out of Kentucky.
- 56:22Speaker 1: Give it something, give it.
- 56:26Speaker 3: As I pour the glass and I swrolled along, I can.
- 56:29Speaker 3: I love the texture holding to the side of the
- 56:32Speaker 3: glass and slowly dripping back down. It's a really good whiskey.
- 56:35Speaker 3: As you sip it. I like to put all around
- 56:38Speaker 3: the mouth. No pause and take it because what I
- 56:42Speaker 3: do you like to do when I find the whiskey,
- 56:43Speaker 3: which is different is seeing how much it's gonna.
- 56:46Speaker 2: Stings as it goes down. Yeah. Yeah, pause.
- 56:56Speaker 3: It's got a nice uh sweetness to it sure as
- 57:00Speaker 3: it goes down my throat. No pause is not harsh.
- 57:05Speaker 3: It's not something that I'm gonna go and take down
- 57:07Speaker 3: and be like, oh that's a little tough. Maybe should
- 57:08Speaker 3: put something in there to take away that bite sits
- 57:13Speaker 3: on the tummy just right.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Oh man, Yeah, you kind.
- 57:17Speaker 3: Of feel like, oh, I have a warm and sensation
- 57:18Speaker 3: if it's a cool day outside, I put that in there.
- 57:21Speaker 3: I know internally I'm getting the heat I need. Overall,
- 57:25Speaker 3: four point five.
- 57:27Speaker 1: Four point five five, I think I can hope. Would
- 57:33Speaker 1: you like me to go?
- 57:34Speaker 3: How did you feel about that?
- 57:36Speaker 1: I'm close with what you're saying. I feel like I
- 57:38Speaker 1: taste and feel a lot of the things that you're
- 57:40Speaker 1: talking about. I think it's got a nice sweet heat
- 57:45Speaker 1: up front, like not too much of that peppery up front.
- 57:48Speaker 1: You're kind of thinking to yourself like is it gonna
- 57:50Speaker 1: sting as it goes down your throat? It does nestle
- 57:52Speaker 1: down your throat very smoothly, and now that I'm in
- 57:55Speaker 1: my third or fourth sip, it's got a nice warm,
- 57:58Speaker 1: not like a harsh we're kind of messes up your
- 58:01Speaker 1: chance just sitting on your stomach.
- 58:03Speaker 2: It's very comfortable on an empty stomach. I don't know
- 58:05Speaker 2: if you've yeah, yeah, I know what you're just saying.
- 58:07Speaker 1: Yeah, And overall, I would give it a four point five.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Yeah, so we're going to take that as a nine
- 58:15Speaker 2: out of ten.
- 58:17Speaker 3: So our dumb shick is it's not about it's always
- 58:22Speaker 3: going to be four point five, because that thing's ever perfect.
- 58:24Speaker 3: But it's the description in what you hear that you
- 58:27Speaker 3: can establish, is that four point five out of five
- 58:29Speaker 3: is it out of twenty? So that's for the viewer
- 58:32Speaker 3: to decide.
- 58:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I like that, Like even a harsh of bad whiskey,
- 58:35Speaker 1: it's still good at four point five. But you would
- 58:37Speaker 1: explain it in a way of like, and that's not
- 58:39Speaker 1: my favorite.
- 58:40Speaker 3: I would say five are watering. Not a lot of
- 58:43Speaker 3: tastes in that, but it's a good whiskey.
- 58:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I like that. I like that. Let's a good
- 58:47Speaker 2: way to put that, though. I like the whole. I
- 58:49Speaker 2: like the whole four out of five portion of it.
- 58:52Speaker 2: You don't know if it's four point five out of
- 58:54Speaker 2: one hundred and fifty to twenty, but it's four point five.
- 58:57Speaker 2: But I love your description, and so I had to
- 59:01Speaker 2: come out here to get this matter of fact not
- 59:03Speaker 2: too long ago. And the first thing I thought was
- 59:06Speaker 2: there wasn't there's a sweetness in but I couldn't put
- 59:08Speaker 2: my finger on it, like like what I what? I what?
- 59:11Speaker 2: I what sweetness it was? So later on I'll drink
- 59:14Speaker 2: it again. Now I'll have something for you because it does.
- 59:16Speaker 3: My first thought is caramel, Like there's a caramel.
- 59:19Speaker 2: Well, you usually you get a little in your your bourbons,
- 59:22Speaker 2: you know, get a little bit of that caramel, a
- 59:24Speaker 2: little bit of that vanilla. But but there's there's there's
- 59:26Speaker 2: something else, and I just can't because.
- 59:29Speaker 1: There's a lot.
- 59:31Speaker 2: It'll sting your lips and you never get to get
- 59:34Speaker 2: the flavor right. So I needed to have and I
- 59:38Speaker 2: always want to have something that, man, you can you
- 59:41Speaker 2: can enjoy. Uh. You know a lot of people want
- 59:44Speaker 2: uh you know, barrel strength whiskey, you know, which is great.
- 59:48Speaker 2: You got to put your cube in it. That's cool,
- 59:50Speaker 2: and we'll do some things like that. As well, But
- 59:53Speaker 2: your your every day whiskey. What I want you to
- 59:55Speaker 2: enjoy on game day, I want you to be able
- 59:57Speaker 2: to enjoy it. I just you know, put the cube
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: or I don't need you to do all that.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Do you like? Are you more of a fan of
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: your whiskey or the one?
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: No? I mean that both my kids I know you love.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: But what wins more? What wins more?
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: Right now? Who's your favorite child at this moment?
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: You're not.
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: You're gonna say I love them both the same, but
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: you're going to think of one name first. Yeah, I'll
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: tell you right.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: I don't do that. I don't do the thing.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: I love.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: I love both my babies the same, boys more than
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: others at certain times. Well, what I would say, though,
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: what I would say with the with the whiskey, is
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: that it's more interactive. That makes sense because there's a
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: lot of things you can do with it, you know.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: So if I was going to have a party or
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: get together or something, and we wanted to make a
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: bunch of different things out of that whiskey, old man,
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: we got we got. We got a whole range of
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: things that we can do, we can express on our
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: teams Manhattan's old fashioned paper planes. We can do all
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: these different things. We could make something with the wine
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: as well. We do. We do a little. It's called
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: a one of the restaurants I go that have both
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: of my products, it's called the Intercept Sour So it
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: has their housemade sour mix my red blend which is
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: not there, and my whiskey and they mix it in
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: this nice little I.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Feel like, you know what I'm saying, do you have
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: a cigar? Notyt I was gonna say, I feel like
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: you got the whiskey, like, I feel like you got
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: you got the nice the age beard. That's really well done.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: I feel like you're a cigar guy. Did you like
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: that when the Raiders will pull that out after the victory? Yeah?
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: Talk about talk about Ap getting the getting the head
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: coaching job.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think Mark had to do it.
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: Man had to do it. It was a ground swell
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: of support for for Ap and just the way he
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: came in Man and and the way that the team
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: just really responded to him. I thought they had to
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: do it. So I'm excited for him. And I was
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: able to go and talk to him before they went
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: and played Indianapolis and I told the guys, I said, hey, man,
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: I can't wait until I get the chance to come
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: in the locker room and hang out at Club Braider
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: with you guys. And so last game of the season
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: against Denver, I got a chance to get in the
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: Club Braider. After the game, Max crowsby running around, Yeah,
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: hands me the cigar. And that was a moment, man,
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: that was a real moment. And so I love it.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: I think Ap is gonna, he's gonna, you know, do
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: a great job. I think he's gonna, you know, hopefully.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: You know, he's a great talent evaluator along with the
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: new GM man and they get guys in here that
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: love the game of football and who want to be Raiders,
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: and so if he can accomplish that, yeah, we'll be right.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: We'll be right.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: And we appreciate you coming on.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: This has been incredible. Man.
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: There was one quick story I do want to tell.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: It was after my rookie year and I was in town.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: We were doing a charity event. I believe it was
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: Yours and Hushingson's security event, and I went to my
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: old house because obviously a couple of guys were there
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: that I used to live at I was damn near
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: blackout drunk, and I was on some extracurriculars as well.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: You come along way from that baby swimming pool, no question.
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: A car, dude, A car pulls up and Charles Woodson walks.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: A little you know the little pools that you fill
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: up for like two year olds. Ye, this guy.
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: Sitting in it, and we're you know, the you've seen
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: the house I lived on. It was like right on
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: that main street called State Street, not far from not
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: far from drunk, now far from Templar. He pulls up
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: because I'm supposed to be that charity events and I
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: ended up going blackout. It was a terrible experience for
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: everybody else but me. But he pulls up and all
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: my boys are there, and you came up at me up.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: We talked for a second and I got back in
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: that tub.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: After you left.
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: I felt like the fucking man. I was like, you know,
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: he just pulled up just to say what's up and.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: Left right right right, randomly riding down the street. Taylor,
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: why in a baby swimming pool? It was I gotta
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: see what's going on over it was.
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: That was an interesting time of my life. Will Will
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: has heard some stories about me and Michigan and the couple.
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: First different all of you offensive linemen. Man, you guys
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: are crazy. Nuts, you guys are crazy.
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it's definitely calmed down quite a bit, thank god,
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: because I would have right now, i'de.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: This is what I tell people before you in is
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: you You. You're a different person now, you do things differently.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: And so we all came into the NFL, you played
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: you know how many other years and you do a
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: lot of dumb ship. And so what I tell young
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: guys is like, I hope you make it to the
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: other side. You know what I'm saying, Because a lot
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: of people in those first couple of years they get
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: into some ship they never recover. But if you can
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: play long enough, man, and kind of just keep yourself
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: somewhat clean and and keep yourself fitting ready to play,
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: and you can get to the other side. Man, it's
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: so much, so much better, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: But you but you don't know unless you get over it.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: I'm happy you made it to the other side.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: Appreciate that, man. Yeah, it's a it's a cool transition.
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: It would be an incredible regret to not make that transition.
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: And then be sitting, you know, out of the league
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: and knowing like, man, what could I have actually done
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: if I wouldn't have just got out of my own way,
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: And so it was it's really cool, but that moment
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: was awesome. Man, that was a very cool moment. This
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: ultimate Please subscribe.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: Hey Dad, Charles Woodson, Charles Woodson, Man appreciate you.
