- 0:00All right today, we're going to do something a little bit different.
- 0:03And I hope you find this.
- 0:05Fun and exciting as much as I did writing this speaking it.
- 0:12And going through it as well.
- 0:16So today's video podcast, episode, wherever you're watching, this is my journey into corporate wellness consulting.
- 0:27You're listening to Kathie's Coaching Podcast I'm your host, Kathie Owen.
- 0:32I have been a certified fitness trainer and certified life coach since 2002.
- 0:39On this channel, we talk about having a growth mindset, healthy habits, fitness, and even some Reality Transurfing.
- 0:48Today we are talking about my passion.
- 0:51I love.
- 0:53How fitness.
- 0:55Changes people's lives.
- 0:58That's what I'm extremely passionate about.
- 1:00And that's what I love.
- 1:02And personal training.
- 1:03Is absolute hands down.
- 1:06The favorite thing I get to do.
- 1:09So it's July of 2022.
- 1:12And I am told that I finally get to go back to the gym full time.
- 1:17This is the first time since may of 2019.
- 1:22I've been employed at OCuSOFT since 2013.
- 1:27I have been their fitness and wellness director all this time.
- 1:32Ironically, I've probably been out of the gym more than I've been into the gym.
- 1:38Because the gym has flooded.
- 1:41It's flooded three times during the rainy seasons or we're on low, low ground.
- 1:47And so we have flooded three times, but the third time it happened was hopefully the last time.
- 1:53And it was in may of 2019.
- 1:56That's summer, they lifted the building three feet off the ground.
- 2:00This is a process they do here in Houston after the floods, but this process would leave the building compromised and we could not enter the building.
- 2:10Until March of 2020.
- 2:14I actually had a makeshift gym in the main building.
- 2:17I had weights and a treadmill, and I just did the best I could.
- 2:22And while I appreciated what I had, and in fact fell in love with where I was, no matter the circumstances was not ideal.
- 2:31Well, we all know what happened March of 2020, and yes, you guessed it.
- 2:37The gym was closed indefinitely because we are technically a healthcare company at oCuSOFT.
- 2:44And we had very strict compliance with the pandemic.
- 2:47And honestly, I wondered if I would even still have a job.
- 2:53And actually I wrote a complete article about what happened and what I did during the pandemic.
- 2:59And as always, I learned to fall in love with where I was no matter the circumstances, this is something I teach in my book, The Truth Bubbles Up and something.
- 3:11I just teach as.
- 3:12Part of my core values.
- 3:15But honestly it was not ideal.
- 3:18I miss fitness and I missed training clients.
- 3:22But I adapted, I fell in love with my fellow team members and the new ventures we went on each day at work.
- 3:29I work in the operations department and every day had some new element to it.
- 3:35We had this saying in our department, you never knew what to expect when you came to work.
- 3:40But we always made it fun.
- 3:45So for over two years, I just maintain the status quo by working in operations department.
- 3:52And July of 2022, I was told I get to go back to the gym full time.
- 3:57While I loved being in the gym, there was something missing.
- 4:01Actually, there was a lot missing.
- 4:04Then it hit me.
- 4:05The fung sheui in the gym was off.
- 4:08There was no flow to the gym.
- 4:10And the cardio equipment was all over the place.
- 4:14And the flooring was definitely off.
- 4:17We had white tile flooring and that is not conducive for a gym.
- 4:22And if you stick around, I'll explain why in just a moment.
- 4:25And there was no color in the gym, it felt drab and it lacked.
- 4:30Two things.
- 4:31It lacked people and it lacked energy.
- 4:35Because during the pandemic and at the end of it, I had been working in the receptionist office.
- 4:40So I got to see everyone every single day, I met new hires and even those interviewing for jobs, my job was fun and I'm a people person.
- 4:49So I got to see people every day and it was awesome.
- 4:52So when I got back into the gym, I missed everyone.
- 4:56Our gym is a separate building and we are now a big campus.
- 5:01So I was met with the dilemma.
- 5:03What in the world was I going to do?
- 5:07So I reached out to one of my colleagues.
- 5:09His name is Zach, and he works at advanced fitness and he had already helped me.
- 5:16Buy some new equipment for the gym and things like that.
- 5:18But.
- 5:19I had him come out to tour the gym.
- 5:21And I asked him for suggestions and he quickly sent me a new layout that I knew the gym needed.
- 5:28And he also suggested some new equipment as well as he knew a flooring company that could help me So I kind of knew what I wanted.
- 5:36I wanted to shift the gym to a functional fitness facility.
- 5:41And I also did an article on functional fitness, and I will link that in the show notes and description as well.
- 5:48But here are the things that I knew I wanted for this gym.
- 5:52I wanted huge graphics on the wall to inspire the atmosphere of the gym.
- 5:57I want it AstroTurf, which is the green grass that you see like an artificial turf and it would enhance the entryway and also provide clear functional fitness training with a sled.
- 6:11But when you walk into the gym, I wanted that AstroTurf to be there on the floor.
- 6:16And just like you walk into the gym and you're like, oh, okay.
- 6:19I'm in a gym.
- 6:19I'm ready to work out.
- 6:23I wanted the TRX bay with the band's medicine balls kettlebells.
- 6:27And storage for stability, balls and bands and extra equipment.
- 6:33I also had requests for a spin bike.
- 6:36So Zach created my design and I made a presentation for the executive team.
- 6:42I had a vision for a gym would be inspiring.
- 6:45And motivational for years to come.
- 6:49At OCuSOFT we are one of the top workplaces in Houston.
- 6:54And this would be yet another bonus for our team members and our culture.
- 6:59It just had to be done.
- 7:01Plus our campus was growing so much and we were quickly running out of space for things that actually make us money.
- 7:08So the gym is.
- 7:11An added plus that we have on campus, but we were running out of space.
- 7:16So you see my dilemma here.
- 7:18After that presentation, the executive team asked for a quote and Zach put that together for me.
- 7:25The first quote he sent me was so high that I would not even share it with the executive team.
- 7:31And retrospect.
- 7:32That probably would have said yes to, but I felt I needed something a little less expensive.
- 7:41But the reason why that quote was so high was because of the flooring.
- 7:45And there are many different types of rubber flooring.
- 7:48But in a nutshell, I picked plain black flooring for my final proposal.
- 7:53And then I sent it in and I waited.
- 7:56I actually waited for about four weeks.
- 8:01Finally, my supervisor came to me and said it was approved just the day before Halloween.
- 8:07I think it was actually approved sooner than this, but that was when I was told to go ahead with the transition.
- 8:15This meant that the new gym would probably be complete just in time for the new year.
- 8:20If we were lucky.
- 8:23We did get lucky and open one week into 2023, but there were hiccups along the way.
- 8:30Of course, the flooring was far from perfect and I still needed mirrors.
- 8:35I needed the graphics and I need safety measures like cameras and an AED.
- 8:40Which is a defibrillator.
- 8:42That goes along with CPR.
- 8:44These seeming little things caused hiccups in my plan.
- 8:48And so the gym was finally finished in early February.
- 8:52I invited Zach over to look at the final product.
- 8:55He was impressed and happy and he told me, Kathie, you are so good at this.
- 9:00You told me exactly what you wanted and you completed the project.
- 9:04Your vision came to life and he is correct.
- 9:08My vision came to life.
- 9:10I've since taken the wellness involvement of the team.
- 9:14On campus.
- 9:15From 1% to over 15%.
- 9:18And I now teach circuits during lunch hour and I have people.
- 9:22Making new friends and creating a healthier lifestyle in their days.
- 9:26Here's some of the things that they are saying.
- 9:29I feel more focused at work.
- 9:33You make the gym fun!, your training style rocks.
- 9:36You're the best personal trainer ever.
- 9:38Thanks for guiding me towards my goal.
- 9:42Kathie really helped.
- 9:43When it came to training days, she taught me training with specific muscle groups at a time and years later, I still use this technique and I love it.
- 9:52That's from one of the clients that's been there for awhile.
- 9:56And I love the Kathie is here on site and can show you proper form when working out, this has helped so much.
- 10:04Another client said, I look forward to working out with Kathie each week.
- 10:09Kathie has made working out fun and really taught me that working out is a great time instead of a dreadful task.
- 10:17And I love that one because so many people do come into the gym and they're like, oh, I don't really want to work out.
- 10:23But by the time they leave, they're like, I'm so glad I came.
- 10:26I so get that.
- 10:28Anyways, another client said Kathie always has times for anything.
- 10:32And she's always caring about what she has planned for us today.
- 10:36She makes sure that not every workout is the same and knows that every workout isn't for everyone.
- 10:43That takes time and dedication.
- 10:45And I couldn't be happier with having her as a trainer.
- 10:49Another client said, Kathie helps me out more than just physically.
- 10:53She helps me with my mental and emotional wellbeing as well.
- 10:57She is so motivated and positive.
- 11:00Those are just some of the things that the clients have been saying in the gym and the feedback that I've been getting, because I requested that feedback because I did go through a spell where I was like, Well, nobody's coming to the gym.
- 11:13What's the deal.
- 11:14So after I got the gym remodeled and started getting set in a routine and schedule, I started sending out feedback forms.
- 11:22So I could find out what people like about the gym, what they don't like about it.
- 11:26Do they like things about my training that.
- 11:29Perhaps, I didn't know, because it's very easy to just get set in your ways.
- 11:33It would have been super easy for me to just take the easy way out and not even design a gym and not even go with this.
- 11:40I could have just gone to work every day.
- 11:43And just done my job.
- 11:46I do work hard.
- 11:47So I probably was guaranteed a job by is nobody's ever guaranteed a job, but I do suspect that I was.
- 11:54And bottom line.
- 11:56I love how fitness changes lives.
- 11:58That is why I do what I do.
- 12:00After I completed this project and got Zach's vote of confidence.
- 12:04I decided to branch out into guest what?
- 12:07I'm going to start consulting.
- 12:09And late February, 2023, I created my LLC.
- 12:13It's called Kathie's Coaching and Consulting and I will continue to work full time for OCuSOFT because honestly, Uh, personal training is what I dearly love.
- 12:22And it is where I got my start in corporate wellness.
- 12:26So my loyalty will always be with OCuSOFT but I will be branching out into the world of corporate wellness consulting.
- 12:33And I look forward to this new venture in my life and I will be sharing my journey every step of the way.
- 12:41But my point in telling you all of this is once I got back into the gym in July.
- 12:48August.
- 12:49I started training again.
- 12:50And especially since it hit January.
- 12:54I feel like myself again.
- 12:56I'm finally training again.
- 12:57I have been a personal trainer for 20 plus years now.
- 13:01And.
- 13:03That means I have to do continuing education every two years because fitness is an ever changing industry, but I stay up on top of it.
- 13:11I understand how fitness helps.
- 13:13I'm also certified to work with older adults and I'm certified as a sports specialist as well.
- 13:21I have a degree in psychology, so I also use a sports psychology as well because I'm kind of an avid sports freak.
- 13:28And if you know me, you know, I love my Astro's, so that's pretty much where that's coming from.
- 13:34But my point in telling you all of this is fitness will change your life.
- 13:42And especially if you follow your passion, follow your heart, fall in love with what you are doing.
- 13:49Even if you're in a moment where you're like, I'm not doing what I really like to do.
- 13:54I promise you, it will come through setting a definite chief aim and sticking to that goal every single day, pulling that goal out of your pocket, looking at it, reading it, even though you may be working in the receptionist office, but you really want to be doing fitness.
- 14:13It will change your life.
- 14:16What your definite chief aim is now that definite chief aim has to be benefit for you and benefit for others.
- 14:24And that is where I come from every single day.
- 14:28And I hope that my story inspires you as well.
- 14:33If you'd like to know more about getting your definite chief aim, setting it up and having a little help in that department.
- 14:41I have a free download on your definite chief aim, and you can find that at kathieowen.com/want And if you know someone who can benefit from this, please share it with them.
- 14:54And until next time I'll see you next time.
- 14:57Peace out and Namaste
