- 0:00SPEAKER_00: If you've been putting off of vasectomy because you're afraid it's going to hurt, you're now alone.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: We routinely meet men who tell us it took them a year, sometimes two years, just to work up the courage to make that appointment.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: And then after their vasectomy, we hear the same thing over and over.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: That was so much easier than I expected.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: We're vasectomy clinics in Chicago and we've performed more than 30,000 vasectomies.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: So we've seen men come in with every level of anxiety imaginable.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And there are a few specific parts of the procedure men tend to be most afraid of.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: So rather than telling you, don't worry, it's no big deal, we want to walk you through those parts and tell you exactly what we do to keep our patients comfortable.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: The first part, getting numb.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: At our practice, we use no needle local anesthesia.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: That means there is no needle used to inject the anesthetic into the skin.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Instead, the anesthetic is delivered through the skin using air pressure.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Once the anesthetic has had a chance to work, we make sure the area is numb before moving forward.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: And that's an important distinction and something our practice takes very seriously.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Because the goal here isn't just to get through the numbing part quickly.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: The whole point is to make the vasectomy itself comfortable so that you're not lying there feeling the kind of sharp pain most men imagined beforehand.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: That's very different from the picture most men have in their heads when they hear the word vasectomy.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: And because you're awake, we can make sure you're comfortable during the entire procedure.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: That gets rid of one big fear, but it could lead into the next one.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: What does the actual vasectomy feel like once the physician starts working?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: What do you feel during the procedure?
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: This is where we want to be very clear.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: We're not going to promise that every man feels exactly the same thing.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Because people experience procedures differently.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: What the local anesthetic is there to do is prevent the sharp pain most men are imagining when they think about a vasectomy.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: You may still be aware that something is happening in the area.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: You may feel pressure, movement, or pulling.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: But the goal is to keep you comfortable and minimize any potential discomfort.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And if you are uncomfortable at any point, you say something.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: That sounds simple, but it matters to us.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Some men come in, assuming they're supposed to lie there, bite down, grin, and bear it.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: We've had a ton of patients come in and say, Doc, I can deal with it.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I can handle pain.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: That's not how we want the procedure to go.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: At our practice, we don't want you to be in pain.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: We want you to be comfortable throughout your entire experience.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Some people need more anesthesia than others, which is why we're in constant communication with the patient while they're on the table.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: You're awake and able to tell us how you're doing, which gives the physician immediate feedback.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: But the anesthetic is only one reason a vasectomy may be easier than you expect.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: The other is how the procedure is performed.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: So what does no scalpel actually mean?
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: We perform a no-scal vasectomy.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Instead of making a traditional incision with a scalpel, the physician uses a very small opening to access the vas deferens, which is the tube involved in carrying sperm.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Through that opening, the physician performs the vasectomy.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: We place a lot of emphasis on being gentle and meticulous with the surrounding tissue, because minimizing unnecessary tissue trauma can make a difference in how sore you are afterward.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: So when you hear no needle, no scalpel, those terms are describing two different parts of a procedure.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: No needle refers to how the local anesthetic is delivered.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: No scalpel refers to how the physician gets access to perform the vasectomy.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Neither one requires you to be put to sleep, which is where another big fear comes in.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: What is it actually like to be awake while this is happening?
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: If fear of the procedure is the main thing keeping you from moving forward, schedule a consultation with us.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: You can meet with one of our physicians, get examined, ask the questions you actually care about, and decide from there.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: If you're still researching, subscribe to the channel.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: We answer a new vasectomy question here every week.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Now, what being awake is actually like?
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Being awake does not mean you're watching the procedure.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: It also doesn't mean we're giving you a running commentary unless you want one.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Some patients like to know what's happening before each step, and they find that reassuring.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Others would rather lie back, close their eyes, listen to music, and have us tell them when we're done.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Both are completely normal.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: The vasectomy is performed in a procedure room in our office, under local anesthetic, and for most men, the entire thing takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: You're not going to a hospital, you're not being put under general anesthesia, and you're not waking up afterwards in a recovery area wondering what happened.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: You're there for the whole thing, but our practice, that experience, is usually much more ordinary than men imagine.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: And this is where we start hearing the same reaction over and over.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: What our patients tell us afterwards.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: The line we hear most often from nervous patients is, that was so much easier than I expected.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's that's it.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's, I can't believe I waited this long to have this done.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: That doesn't mean every patient has an identical experience, and it doesn't mean there's never any discomfort.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: What it tells us is that the expectation beforehand is often much worse than the experience men actually report afterwards.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: A lot of men come in imagining a much bigger event.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: A hospital, a major surgery, general anesthesia, a large incision, a long time on the table.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Then they experience something very different at our practice.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: A short office procedure, local anesthetic, very small opening, music, conversation, usually a little after, all in about 20 to 30 minutes from start to finish.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: That gap between what they imagined and what actually happened is why we hear those statements so often.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: But there is one thing that can make that first appointment much easier before you ever get to the procedure room.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Why the consultation matters.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Every patient meets with one of our physicians before the vasectomy.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Yes, we examine you and make sure an in-off vasectomy is appropriate for you, but it's also your chance to say, I'm really nervous about the pain.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Tell us.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Ask how the numbing works, what you may feel, or what happens if you're uncomfortable halfway through.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Then when you come back for the procedure, you've already met one of our physicians, you've already been examined, and you've already asked the questions that were bothering you.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot less for your imagination to fill in.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: And once the procedure is over, there is one more part men are often unsure about.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: What happens immediately afterward?
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: So what does happen right after the procedure?
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Well, when the vasectomy is finished, you get dressed and you go home.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: There's no long, slow waking up from general anesthesia because you were never put to sleep.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Although some patients do fall asleep on the table, and there's no long monitored recovery period in a hospital.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Before you leave, we go over your post-procedure instructions, so you know what to do when you get home.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: You know what activities you need to avoid for a while, what activities you can gradually start.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Most of our patients are back at work the next day, although obviously making adjustments depending on what your job looks like.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Sitting at a disc is different from lifting, climbing, running, or doing hard physical labor all day.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: You'll also know how to reach us if a question comes up once you're home.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: We care about that because sometimes the question isn't, is something wrong?
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: The question is simply, is this normal?
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: And we'd rather you call and ask than sit at home guessing.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Now, how quickly you recover is its own topic, and there are a few things that can affect your recovery.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: But before we get into recovery, let's come back to the question that probably got you to click on this video in the first place.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: So, how much does a vasectomy hurt?
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: And the most honest answer is that everyone's experience is different.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: What we can tell you is what we see over and over again in our practice.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: The area is numbed with a local anesthetic delivered without a needle, procedures done through a very small opening using a no-scalpel technique.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: You're awake and able to communicate with us throughout the whole thing.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: And for most men, it takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: And after it's done, the reaction we hear again and again from men who were convinced it was going to be terrible is this was much easier than I expected.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: So if you already know you want a vasectomy, but fear of pain is the thing keeping you from making the call, don't make the decision based on the worst thing you've imagined or the worst story you've heard.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Come in and get real answers.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: If you're ready to get those questions answered for yourself, schedule consultation with our team.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: And if the procedure itself makes more sense now, but your next question is, okay, how long am I going to be sore afterwards?
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Watch this video next.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: It covers the three things that can affect how your recovery goes and what you can do to help yours go as smoothly as possible.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: We'll see you there.
