Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Why NASCAR Is So Different From Open Wheel Racing | Espresso With Max Papis

- 0:00Good morning to espresso with Max and subject of the day is
- 0:08going a little bit more in depth with what Kevin Harvick was
- 0:14mentioning about Catherine Legge Helio Castroneves messing up in
- 0:21in stock car and my comment on the fact that stock car on an
- 0:28Oval is a very unnatural feeling.
- 0:32I'm going to start with, you know, giving you guys an example
- 0:35of a list of how my brain operate.
- 0:38You go to Phoenix, you you as an open wheel guy, sports car guy,
- 0:44whatever, however you want to call and you look at turn 1 and
- 0:482 and your brain would say it could be wide open, maybe a
- 0:55little lift. Then you show up with a stock
- 0:58car and you need to let off at 2300 feet mark 2 mark 3 before
- 1:03the corner using the brake off the throttle for such a long
- 1:08time, maybe 2 second, something like this 3 second.
- 1:13And that just tells you that although the there are cars,
- 1:21there are similar cars. There are two race cars.
- 1:24The way you approach that kind of racing is completely
- 1:27different and that is why is so difficult for someone who has
- 1:37who does not have a stock car experience to adapt to a stock
- 1:42car. And actually it's, I would say
- 1:47that if you have a lot of experience and your background
- 1:50is open wheel or the car with downforce, it will be, I don't
- 1:55want to say impossible, but very difficult to change your habits,
- 2:00change the way your brain operates because an open wheel
- 2:08car is very connected to your body.
- 2:16The response and what the car does, it's really connected to
- 2:23your body. You know the limitation you know
- 2:25many times is you not being able to do what the car can do.
- 2:34Stock car are heavy, powerful and extremely difficult to drive
- 2:45because you need to drive them with precision.
- 2:49One of my take that I always say it would be that if someone in
- 2:57stock car A-Team owner would like to give a shot to a known
- 3:06NASCAR driver, I would call Robampera, Sebastian Loeb, one
- 3:14of the rally driver, and I think these guys would be able to do a
- 3:22better job than any open wheel guy.
- 3:25Here we go. Giovanni jumped on the back.
- 3:29What's the reason why? They're used to improvise with
- 3:33precision. An open wheel guy is used to
- 3:41feel the load in the car, feel the load in your body.
- 3:45When you enter the corner, you already kind of know where
- 3:48you're exiting and the expectation that you have from
- 3:55the car are completely different than what the stock car
- 4:01requires. I'm going to give a little bit
- 4:05more in depth example. Again, talking about Phoenix,
- 4:08you guys have must have seen a lot of times driver install car,
- 4:14manipulating that car, you know, being below the, you know, being
- 4:19on the apron, being on the top and you ask yourself why, right?
- 4:25Chad Giovanni, thank you for joining us.
- 4:29Good morning, Sir. When you look at the white line
- 4:33that separates the apron to the track in an open wheel, if you
- 4:37just look at it or you get too close to it, you're going to be
- 4:40straight into the wall. Why?
- 4:45The cars are extremely rigid. You go on the white line with
- 4:49your left tire. It it changes the weight of the
- 4:52car, the the weight distribution of the car and you will make the
- 4:57car so loose that the car would be uncontrollable.
- 5:00You will be into the wall stock car.
- 5:04You need to use the white line. You need to use the apron to
- 5:08manipulate what the car does. If you don't do that, you're not
- 5:13going to be competitive. If you're not used to that kind
- 5:20of mentality, if you're not used to know what the car needs or
- 5:29how much you need to use the track to manipulate the handling
- 5:32of the car, it's really difficult to put it in your
- 5:37brain. Make it yours, then make a good
- 5:41job. I'm not saying that is
- 5:45impossible. You know, I believe that is
- 5:48doable if you give yourself enough time.
- 5:53If you spend a couple of years in the Truck Series, one or two
- 5:56year in in in Xfinity. But nobody will give an Indy 500
- 6:06driver this time, Indy 500 winner this time, because the
- 6:15expectation is to you go in there and you're going to be
- 6:18competitive. This is the major issue that I
- 6:23found, you know, in the situation where the expectation
- 6:31of a guy that has been winning in other class is that you show
- 6:34up in stock car and you should be somehow competitive.
- 6:38That's not it. That's it doesn't work with
- 6:40that. I will be happy to go a little
- 6:44bit more in depth in the future. I know that we have a lot of
- 6:49things to talk about it, but I don't want to.
- 6:52I'm learning how to make this short and clear.
- 6:55So guys, for the moment, for today, that's it.
- 7:02I will be touching base again and for you to go to the office
- 7:07finishing off my coffee, my espresso and you guys have a
- 7:11great day.
