- 0:28Well, let's talk some college basketball from a local
- 0:30perspective. Elliot Clef covers Iowa for 24/7
- 0:34Sports Hawkeye, insider.com, and he's with Miller and Condon.
- 0:39Hello, Elliot Trenton, Ken. How are you, Sir?
- 0:42I'm good. How are you guys?
- 0:43Doing OK, everything going OK for the house, etcetera,
- 0:46etcetera, things moving forward in your world.
- 0:49Oh yeah, we close on Friday and boy yeah, having some friends
- 0:53help us do some initial stuff this weekend and then my my
- 0:56family's coming up so things are moving along.
- 1:00Fiance and I are are very very excited so.
- 1:03Good for you. Yeah, excited to start our lives
- 1:06together, so really, really looking forward.
- 1:08To it good stuff. Well, let's yeah, no,
- 1:10absolutely. Let's talk about last night and
- 1:12what we saw on the floor last night.
- 1:14Obviously with the exception of the the start of the game, the
- 1:17first few minutes of the game, a just dominating win by the
- 1:20Hawkeyes. Trent and I both think that this
- 1:23will be maybe remembered as and when you look back the Fulgaris
- 1:27game, if you will, he was just so damn good.
- 1:29Did everything you saw some emotion out of him when he made
- 1:32that big donkey was, you know, distributing the basketball.
- 1:35He had a handful of assists in the game. 20 points.
- 1:38What a night for Alvaro Frigars. Yeah, he was awesome.
- 1:43If you're if you're Ben McCollum, maybe you see what you
- 1:46can get past a judge to see if you can get his older brother to
- 1:50come by because he's going to play like that every time.
- 1:52His brothers in town might as well have on the roster and he's
- 1:56a pro player in Ireland for those.
- 1:57Oh, is he? I didn't know that part of it.
- 2:00Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They grew up playing against
- 2:02each other, another tall guy, and I guess they they help each
- 2:06other develop and such. I don't know if he played any
- 2:08college ball. I'm assuming not, but yeah, that
- 2:11would be something to look into if you're bad, if other teams
- 2:14can do it, why not? But yeah, I mean, he was, he was
- 2:18awesome last night. And the other thing I'll point
- 2:20out too is about his game last night.
- 2:23Is that the thing that we recognize early on his time at
- 2:29Iowa is that takes the floor a little bit more of a stretch for
- 2:33last night, all of his points came in the paint from the free
- 2:36throw line. When Alvaro Folger is is
- 2:39aggressive and looking to attack off the dribble, that makes this
- 2:43team so much better. It takes so much press pressure
- 2:47off Bennister. I mean, Iowa 12 and one, when he
- 2:50scores in double figures like that, that's telling of the way
- 2:53he plays the game and and how impactful he can be, especially
- 2:58again, when he's looking to attack off the dribble, get to
- 3:00the rim, get to the free throw line.
- 3:01Like if you can shoot the three and and knock him down, awesome.
- 3:04But I I think he's better when he puts the ball on the floor
- 3:07and and it's an attack mode first.
- 3:09And we saw this team in attack mode throughout.
- 3:12It was a bunch of different guys.
- 3:14He had Manuel, what he was able to do in there, Bennett starts
- 3:17turning the corner and getting to the rim.
- 3:19Little bit of everything, kind of putting it on the floor,
- 3:21getting in there. It helped that Tilly was out.
- 3:23Not out there for the Buckeyes. I get that, But it's something
- 3:26that I've and talked about a lot throughout the course of the
- 3:28season. I want to see this team do it
- 3:30more. 44 points in the paint, this is not a great 3 point
- 3:34shooting team. And with Cooper Koch's
- 3:35struggles, we know Bennett Sturtz can make it out there.
- 3:37This is not a team built for three-point shooting.
- 3:40Need to get more of this more off the bounce.
- 3:42Did did they find out a little bit more and maybe this is going
- 3:45to be something more part of the game plan going forward.
- 3:48And again, it helps when they don't got a big center in the
- 3:50middle. Right.
- 3:53I mean, Ohio State did have a 71 center in there.
- 3:58Yeah. He was not very good.
- 3:59So but just just for for contact.
- 4:04But yeah, you know, I mean, 44 to 18 in the paint, Like anytime
- 4:09you do that, you're probably going to win.
- 4:11And like you mentioned, like Cooper, Cooper is a good
- 4:16shooter. He hasn't had a great year.
- 4:18I think he's missed too many shots.
- 4:21I think people also forget that he's a red shirt freshman in his
- 4:24first year under a new head coach with a completely
- 4:28different coaching philosophy, completely different schematics,
- 4:31and he's still figuring it out. He was a starter at the
- 4:34beginning of the year. He's the prototypical 6869 guy
- 4:37who can shoot and defend that that McCollum one.
- 4:40Like he might be in a shooting slump, but the thing I said last
- 4:44night is lock him in a gym and have him make 100 threes every
- 4:47day this summer and that's going to help him a lot.
- 4:50But anyway, back to your point, I I think it it's easier said
- 4:56than done. I mean, like you mentioned
- 4:57Philly being out, that definitely had something to do
- 4:59with their ability to get to the rims to attack the rim.
- 5:02And you know, we're going to learn probably quite a bit next
- 5:06week when they play Michigan as far as the ability to attack the
- 5:10rim consistently get there, get to the free throw line.
- 5:13How much are, you know, how the refs officiate that is, is
- 5:16definitely going to be something of note.
- 5:17But I it is it is a lot easier said than done getting to the
- 5:23rim and especially when you're center when you're center 69.
- 5:27He's not 611. He's not 7 feet And Alvaro, like
- 5:31he again, he was great last night getting to the rim.
- 5:33He is he's real thin man. Like if he's going to and I
- 5:37don't think he's going to get bullied right?
- 5:38Like, but at the same time, I think that it is just with the
- 5:44way this roster is constructed, it's a lot easier said than done
- 5:48to attack the rim and get get buckets with regularity.
- 5:51But if there's anybody who can steam that up consistently, it
- 5:54is Ben McCollum. It's just about execution and
- 5:57you got him. Like, you can say this team's
- 6:00not a three-point shooting team, which I agree they maybe could
- 6:02be a better three-point shooting team if they put Brendan Hoffman
- 6:05on the floor fairly regularly, which they don't.
- 6:07But but you have to make those open threes.
- 6:12Like Isaiah Howard needs to be more consistent from three.
- 6:15Kale Combs had a stretch where he was awesome, looked better
- 6:18last night. He was awesome defensive.
- 6:20Defensively. Yep, Yep, Yep.
- 6:22And it's Bennett, you know, you can trust Bennett to create
- 6:24separation and hit a three. Tavion Banks was really good
- 6:27from three for a little while. We haven't seen him shoot one of
- 6:29those in a bit. So, yeah, I if you can, if you
- 6:34can get to the basket, if you can draw a foul man, do it all
- 6:37day long. And, and that's one of those
- 6:39things I think Ben McCollum is good at is if a defense shows a
- 6:44weakness, just run the same thing and make them stop it
- 6:48right like that. I think last night was was an
- 6:50epitome of that in terms of their willingness to get after
- 6:54the the the basket, get to the basket and and finish and and
- 6:57also get to the free throw line. Yeah, you're right.
- 6:59We do forget that the coaches read your freshman.
- 7:02I forget that Tate Sages is a true freshman sometimes because
- 7:06we've seen some really good games out of him, Elliot and but
- 7:09lately, particularly in the month of February, although he
- 7:11had pretty decent game against Wisconsin, really good game
- 7:14against Wisconsin, but too few and far between.
- 7:17Is that just, you know, life as a freshman in the Big 10 when it
- 7:20comes to Tate Sage? I would say so, yeah.
- 7:24I mean, he like, like you said, he's had some really good games.
- 7:28He's had some games where he, I don't want to say disappears,
- 7:30but or say he's a non factor because I don't think either of
- 7:33those things would be true. But he's less impactful if you
- 7:37don't see it on the offensive end, you see it on the defensive
- 7:40end at least. He is a really good defender,
- 7:42especially for being a freshman. I think he uses his size, his
- 7:45blank really well and his bounce, frankly.
- 7:49Definitely an underrated athlete, but I would agree with
- 7:52that. I think that's just life in the
- 7:54big 10 as a freshman when you're not, you know, a five star
- 7:56recruit. We have to remember, guys, I
- 7:58mean, he was expecting to play a Drake this year.
- 8:00Like for him to to show up and and play the way he has already,
- 8:05like he gets a pass from me if he doesn't have the greatest
- 8:07game in the whole world, right. And I think he I don't have the
- 8:12stats in front of me, but he missed a few threes last night
- 8:15that were that were decent shots and sometimes that just
- 8:18happened. You know, like, I mean, I said
- 8:20it, Kuberkosh is a good shooter. The percentages and the way he's
- 8:23shooting the the ball right now, I don't think is indicative of
- 8:25the way he can and and more often than not does shoot the
- 8:29basketball. So I got to give Tate stage the
- 8:32benefit of the doubt. The fact that he's playing and
- 8:34has been a consistent part of the rotation this season earned
- 8:37the trust of Ben McCollum on that front.
- 8:39That is, that is a huge indicator of what he is and what
- 8:43he can be already. We'd be remiss if we didn't
- 8:46bring up Kale Cohen's a guy that has certainly gotten some arrows
- 8:49here over the last month or so, hit a three pointer, but most
- 8:52importantly, the defense that he we had on Bruce Thornton, who's
- 8:55been a thorn in the side of the Hawkeyes.
- 8:57Here that had a lot of teams. And yeah, the Hawkeyes are not
- 8:59alone on that front. I thought Kale, Combs and the
- 9:02team defense was outstanding against Thornton.
- 9:05Yeah, the way they blitz the ball screen, the way that Kale,
- 9:09I mean, there were times where Kale just didn't even let
- 9:13Thornton touch the ball, especially in the first half.
- 9:15I mean, Thornton finished O for three for 0 points and he played
- 9:18all 20 minutes in that first half.
- 9:20And what's the best way to prevent one of those scorers
- 9:24from scoring the basketball? Make sure they don't touch the
- 9:26basketball. And and that's one of the things
- 9:28that that Kale did not only in in his pick and roll coverage,
- 9:31but his off ball defense too, I think.
- 9:34I mean, I think on your show before, but for those of you who
- 9:38don't know, he's just recruited to play Division One football
- 9:42too. I mean, like he's got some
- 9:43athleticism. He was offered a scholarship
- 9:45play wide receiver in Western Michigan by Tim Lester.
- 9:48So he's got some of that athleticism and that ability to
- 9:52keep up with those guys who are the elite scorers of the Big 10.
- 9:56And you know, for as much grief as he's gotten as of late for
- 9:59his poor offensive play, man, he's an asset defensively.
- 10:03And you know, I don't I'm not looking at Kale and expecting
- 10:06him to be, you know, the next Trevor or the Hudgens who who
- 10:10McCollum had at at Northwest and won some titles with or to be
- 10:14the next Bennett stirs. But he has value on this team.
- 10:17And and McCollum said it a couple days ago, too, is that he
- 10:21can take away the opponent regard the best guard or or what
- 10:25have you. And I think we saw that last
- 10:26night. And he needs he needs to be more
- 10:29consistent again as a shooter. Things just spaced out with him
- 10:33when he's shooting the ball well.
- 10:35And I want to he's one of the guys that sticks out to me as
- 10:38the ones that pass up a good shot at the end of the shot
- 10:42clock to try to get a great shot to overpass or whatever.
- 10:45He I think that's one of the things that's inhibiting him
- 10:48offensively. So I think that would help him
- 10:51get maybe sort of out of this bunk.
- 10:54He did get AI think a fast break layup last night as well as a
- 10:56three pointer. To see that three pointer go
- 10:59down probably had to feel real good for him for the offensive
- 11:02slump he's been in. But yeah, the defense is is
- 11:05worth it to to have him on the on the floor.
- 11:08Penn State Saturday, then finish home to Michigan at Nebraska.
- 11:12Is there a team in the middle of the Big 10, Elliot, that's maybe
- 11:16got your attention, you know, kind of in the area of Iowa
- 11:19where they are in the standing, maybe it's UCLA with Dent.
- 11:22Is there a team that you know, outside of the the Big 5, if you
- 11:26will, that that you're going to pay close attention to once we
- 11:29get to either the Big 10 tournament or even going forward
- 11:33into the Big Dance? Yeah, You know, I would probably
- 11:37say UCLA is a good one. Any team with with a lead guard
- 11:42like Donovan Ben is is going to give you some give anybody
- 11:46trouble, right. Like, and prior to last night's
- 11:49game, I probably would have said the same thing about Bruce
- 11:51Thornton. Ohio State on a neutral floor,
- 11:53it might be a little different. You know, I mean, in Indiana has
- 11:57has had some issues as of late, but like Tucker Debris, I got to
- 12:01see him quite a bit in Missouri Valley Conference.
- 12:03That dude, if he gets hot, he can really shoot.
- 12:05He's not even their leading scorer.
- 12:06At Indiana, we saw the athletes that USC has washing.
- 12:11I mean, like, and I'm going down towards the bottom of the big
- 12:1310:00-ish now. But Washington, we saw what what
- 12:17they were capable of. I mean, that night was not
- 12:20scoring 48 points in the first half, but.
- 12:22Well, Steinbach's the top five player.
- 12:24I top five pick. I think I love this kids game.
- 12:27OK, all right. Well, anyway, the, the, the
- 12:33middle of the Big 10 isn't, you know, it's, there's a, there's a
- 12:36tier difference between the Michigan, Nebraska, Illinois,
- 12:39Michigan State, Purdue and and maybe Wisconsin and everybody
- 12:42else. But I mean, it's the Big 10,
- 12:46right? Like, you can't, you can't take
- 12:47a night off. You can't take a night off.
- 12:49You can't look over any of those initial teams because they'll
- 12:53take advantage. Like it's, it's not, it's not
- 12:55the NBC anymore. It's not mid major basketball
- 12:58for Ben McCollum, you have to and, and for some of these Drake
- 13:00guys, you have to lock in every single night.
- 13:03And I think they're starting to figure that out as the season
- 13:07has started to, to get towards the end here, maybe not in the
- 13:111st 5 minutes of the game, but otherwise, I think they've
- 13:14started to figure it out. And at the same time, you can't
- 13:19be taken advantage of in those early rounds of the Big 10.
- 13:21If you get one of those draws and you face UCLA early, you
- 13:24can't think, oh, we beat them at home, we'll beat them again.
- 13:27You have to show up, You have to play the defence on a Donovan
- 13:30tent and, and you have to get the job done and, and, and move
- 13:34forward in the Big 10 like this team.
- 13:36We, we've seen them control the pace of games.
- 13:39We've seen them and get what they won offensively and when
- 13:44Alvaro plays like he did last night or Fabian Banks has a has
- 13:47a great game, they can they can hang with a lot of these teams
- 13:50in the Big 10. I mean, I don't don't color me
- 13:53shocked if they if they get a revenge game on a Purdue or a
- 13:56Michigan State or a Wisconsin in the Big 10 tournament.
- 14:00Want to jump over to football? You had an article earlier this
- 14:02week at hawkeyeinsider.com talking about the defensive end
- 14:05position and you lose 2 multi year starters, guys that played
- 14:09a lot of snaps at least in Llewellyn and Herket.
- 14:12Also Brian Allen moves on as he's over in Vanderbilt.
- 14:15It is going to be a new look over there and I want didn't do
- 14:18a great job of getting the quarterback certainly from the
- 14:20defensive end position a year ago.
- 14:22When you look at this new group, they go out there in the portal,
- 14:25they got some young guys with Shanique and Anderson and Yosei
- 14:29up in Nessa. You're certainly excited about.
- 14:31What is the cut of your outlook on the defensive end position
- 14:34and potentially being able to get to the quarterback a little
- 14:37bit better this year? Yeah, you know, I, I think I
- 14:43think truthful. Well, the conversation has to
- 14:45start with Kenneth Merriweather because he is the only guy
- 14:47coming back that was part of the rotation last year.
- 14:50Do I see him as being a double digit that guy?
- 14:52I don't. Do you do you hope he can be the
- 14:55leader and and that rock of of that defensive end group like,
- 14:58you know, a Joe Evans or an Ethan Hercat were in the last
- 15:01few years. I think that's what you really
- 15:04are shooting for from a Kenneth Merriweather.
- 15:06If he does become that double digit that guy, then awesome.
- 15:09But if you're looking for that pass rusher, I think you have to
- 15:14go to yo stay up and that's a yes.
- 15:16They did use his red shirt this last year.
- 15:18He I think he only played four games, but the the physical
- 15:23tools. I mean we saw you could see what
- 15:26he did on his puddle against kids in the Saint Louis area
- 15:28during his prep career. But the reason he's a five star,
- 15:31he was a five star for us at 24/7 sports is the fact that he
- 15:35did it against some of these all American guys at these big
- 15:39showcase bowl sort of things when he was in high school.
- 15:42The violence, the I mean, he looks like a grown man out there
- 15:45with boys. The the, the, the, the speed off
- 15:49the ball. If he's good, if there's going
- 15:51to be a feared pass rusher on this roster, I think it's
- 15:54Epinesta. I want to see more from what
- 15:58Kamari Brown can do at this level as opposed to at the FCS
- 16:02because his grades, like BFF grades were phenomenal both in
- 16:06the run and the past. 16 tackles for loss, 12 stacks.
- 16:10But that wasn't Elon, right? Like he ended up.
- 16:13I think he tied or, or set the program career stack record in
- 16:17two years of Elon, which is awesome.
- 16:20That's incredible. Now can you do it at the Big 10
- 16:22level? I want to see more from Joe
- 16:23Anderson and and Shima Chaneke Anderson, again, a guy that's
- 16:28really explosive athlete, super long, was going to be on the
- 16:31track team at Iowa before he decided to commit to the
- 16:35football fully. But the twitchiness is there.
- 16:39He's just, he's 6 foot 6 and 240 lbs.
- 16:42So you got to put some, I think something like that.
- 16:44I'd have to double check the football roster, but real, real
- 16:47thin. If he's putting on a ton of
- 16:49weight this this spring and summer, then then he's a guy
- 16:52that I'm keeping my eye on. And you know, Chima, he's one of
- 16:55those those Texas recruits groups that like, OK, you're
- 16:59from the Lone Star State, we're going to expect a little bit
- 17:01more from you super long. But yeah, it's a really
- 17:06interesting group. A lot of turnover, like you
- 17:08mentioned. No, Brian Allen, I think if
- 17:11there is a star in that group, I mean, his last name's Eponetza,
- 17:15right? Like we got to roll with USA.
- 17:17Good stuff, Elliot Cleft 24/7 Sports, hawkeyeinsider.com
- 17:21Elliot, as always, we appreciate you coming on.
- 17:24We'll talk to you down the road. Thanks, Elliot.
- 17:27Awesome. Thanks, guys.
- 17:27Yep. Appreciate it, good to talk to
- 17:29you Ellie Clough as we check in on the Hawkeyes basketball and
- 17:32football wise. Oh man, beat Penn State?
- 17:38Yep. Get beat by Michigan, yes,
- 17:42upset. What will be the point spread in
- 17:44the game in Lincoln? Oh, I can give you a projected
- 17:46point spread for that game. All right, take a take a guess.
- 17:49Now you're normally this is football.
- 17:51You're really. Good at this.
- 17:52In fact, you're in homecourt. I am 6 1/2.
- 17:56That's really good. 66.1 to be exact to Bartorvic has Nebraska
- 18:01winning 70 to 60. Four, what about the Michigan
- 18:04game? Also 6 is it really 6.1?
- 18:06As many as I thought. And I'm right there with you.
- 18:09I was a little bit surprised. So you're saying there's a
- 18:11chance there's a? Chance you win one of those
- 18:14games, succeed, and then don't lose to the nine seed.
- 18:18Whoever it is, don't do that. No.
- 18:20Well, that's six seed. Would that get them away from
- 18:22Michigan on the top of the bracket?
- 18:24Oh, for the big Oh, I see what you're saying.
- 18:26I was talking. Big and I agree with you.
- 18:28Get to the six seed and the big dance.
- 18:30Absolutely. Well, let's play around here a
- 18:32little bit here. Let's which one of the two we
- 18:34going to give them? Nebraska.
- 18:39You pause for a moment and I know it's hard for you, Husker
- 18:42Kenny, to get past your Husker love, but we flipped that one
- 18:46around. We'll.
- 18:47Have to have SIP on next week. Yes, it could be the last time.
- 18:50Yes, absolutely. We'll, it won't be the last.
- 18:52Time. No.
- 18:52You know what? We'll find a way to talk about
- 18:53spring football with SIP, Yes? So still and by the way, hope.
- 18:57Will be springing eternal. Well, of course it will be.
- 19:00We know that incredibly well. They are still in this
- 19:04projection with all the other favorites winning.
- 19:06Iowa would still be the eighth seed even with a win against
- 19:09Nebraska. However, go back two teams and
- 19:12but in front of them, one win in front of them, Wisconsin, the
- 19:16other UCLA. So looking at the Bruins here.
- 19:21So they have UCLA beating Minnesota in the barn.
- 19:24Very simple. Let's just flip that, yeah?
- 19:26We could. In the barn, Gophers get UCLAUCA
- 19:30loses to Nebraska. UCLA wins against USC in the
- 19:33finale. I think there's going to be
- 19:35another loss and they have projected here.
- 19:37That's how Iowa then rises to the seven seed, meeting a likely
- 19:41rematch against Ohio State or Maryland.
- 19:44Sign for that in a heartbeat. And then in the quarterfinals,
- 19:47instead of having to face the behemoth that is Michigan, you
- 19:50get predicted Purdue. Oops.
- 19:53Well, that didn't sound great. All right, let's see.
- 19:57What else can we do to flip around this and make it?
- 20:00Who would you? Who would you like to see Iowa
- 20:02play? Out of the top three, though, in
- 20:05the quarterfinals, it's going to be one of those teams even as
- 20:07we're playing around here, Michigan, Illinois.
- 20:11Illinois doesn't play a lick of defense.
- 20:13I guess. Maybe Illinois.
- 20:14I mean the size factor though. Starts stunk in that game
- 20:18against the Illini too. He played poorly for his
- 20:21standards. Maybe, possibly I would came
- 20:26back with him on the bench. When they got back into the
- 20:28game, that's when he was sitting out with the foul trouble.
- 20:32I guess I. I think probably of the three,
- 20:34right? Produce just a bad match up for
- 20:36them. The two bigs inside, what they
- 20:38can do there doesn't feel good. Michigan's Michigan.
- 20:41I think the answer is Illinois, but they're all good teams.
- 20:44They are all good teams. We'll take a time out.
- 20:46We'll come back. We'll head to Indianapolis
- 20:48combining when we come back, Dalton Wasserman, Pro Football
- 20:52Focus joins us. He's an Indy for the combine
- 20:54will pick his brain on a number of topics as Miller and Condon
- 20:57talk sports with you on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:04I'm Hillary Condon, welcome back. 1:30 on a Thursday,
- 21:08Trends, Plays of the day still to come.
- 21:09Circus sports sponsor those off. The Indy combine is where the
- 21:13NFL action is taking place this weekend and has been for the
- 21:17majority of the week. And Dalton Wasserman joins us
- 21:19profootballfocus.com. Dalton Trenton, Ken for you.
- 21:23Dalton, when does the combine really pick up?
- 21:26When do you guys at Pro Football Focus?
- 21:28I know you're spread, I'm sure you've all got different
- 21:30responsibilities, but in your world, what are the most
- 21:33important days for you, Dalton? Honestly, we were there the last
- 21:37couple days when you talk about GM's and head coach and head
- 21:40coaches for most of the teams talking.
- 21:41And obviously you're kind of digging in for any speculation
- 21:44and any sort of wording that might give away any intention
- 21:47from any of these teams, right? In some, you know, some of those
- 21:49GM's and coaches are more blood than others when it comes to how
- 21:52their offseason might be framed. But you know, obviously that's a
- 21:55fun time. And then you get into the
- 21:56weekend with the players, right, and figuring out the athletic
- 21:59testing and especially guys at the top of the draft, you want
- 22:01to see if they're elite athletes.
- 22:03I know a lot of the measurements are coming out now, you know,
- 22:05and even today they're already getting highly scrutinized.
- 22:07So the entire week really does have a lot of important factors
- 22:10in it. It's fun to pay attention to all
- 22:11of it. Underwear Olympics, that's what
- 22:13it's been dubbed. We have heard many of the things
- 22:16in the past. I really checked out for a while
- 22:19when I had, I remember having a scout saying that Tristan Worse
- 22:22wasn't athletic enough to be a tackle at the NFL level.
- 22:25I said, well, right, we got somebody that had A at least a
- 22:28pen and had a keyboard and he didn't know what the hell they
- 22:31were talking about. As we've seen as he has moved
- 22:33on, when it comes to the goofiness, arm length, those
- 22:36kind of things, are there things that you look at that the
- 22:39measurables you believe are important and things that are
- 22:42overstated? It's definitely different at
- 22:45every position, right? I think there's obviously some
- 22:47you look at lineman and everyone's talking about arm
- 22:49length. It was Will Campbell with it
- 22:51last year now with Ruben Bane and a few other guys, right?
- 22:53So I think the big thing with you're looking for the combine
- 22:56really is who are the outliers, right, both on the high end and
- 22:59the low. And most guys, as with anything,
- 23:01are going to be within that average range, within maybe a
- 23:04couple standard deviations. But like, say, a Ruben Bane with
- 23:07his arm length coming out under 31 inches, is that an outlier
- 23:10that that some teams are going to want to avoid?
- 23:12Right. Every team, all 32 teams have
- 23:14different standards when it comes to athletic profiles and
- 23:17what they prefer and then what fits in their schemes and the
- 23:19coaching Staffs and all of that. So that's what you're looking
- 23:21for. And then on the high end, say
- 23:23maybe if there's some guys who are risers through this process
- 23:25who maybe didn't have the elite production in college, you go,
- 23:28OK, if this guy's an A+ athlete, why didn't anybody get to unlock
- 23:32it, really, and unlock that production in college?
- 23:33And sometimes it makes you take a second look at the tapes.
- 23:36So definitely you can't make all of your definitive statements
- 23:38here this week, but there's a lot of things you can go back
- 23:41and take a second look at I. Want to ask you about the
- 23:43quarterbacks. Are you in the camp that Mendoza
- 23:46is a can't miss that he's going to succeed?
- 23:49And then where are you on Ty Simpson, the the Alabama
- 23:52quarterback who you know, depends who you talk to.
- 23:55Some love him, some think he's a second round pick at best.
- 23:57Where are you on the two quarterbacks that seemingly will
- 24:00go off the board? Well, Mendoza very quickly, and
- 24:02then Simpson at some point, either first day or early second
- 24:06day. Yeah, I still meant, I still
- 24:08firmly believe Mendoza is going to go first.
- 24:10I think you can just about write it in pen at this point.
- 24:12He's going to be the Las Vegas Raiders quarterback.
- 24:14I don't think he's quite as can't miss to say, you know, Joe
- 24:17Burrow, Caleb Williams, Trevor Lawrence, some of the other guys
- 24:19we get that are considered generational prospects.
- 24:22But I think there is a time in the prime of his career when
- 24:24Mendoza can be a top 8 to 10 quarterback.
- 24:26I think he's really solid. You think about the caliber of
- 24:29players say that a Dak Prescott or a Jared Goff or one of those
- 24:32guys has become throughout their career.
- 24:34I think Mendoza can get there if the Raiders build it right.
- 24:36As far as Simpson, obviously the opinions are much wider ranging.
- 24:39Is he a first round guy, Second round guy?
- 24:41I think he could be either one of those.
- 24:43I think you probably get in that stretch starting maybe at #16
- 24:46with the New York Jets where you start to think about him.
- 24:48And I think the big thing for me, I would like to see Simpson
- 24:50go to a situation where he could sit for a year, right?
- 24:53I think about Pittsburgh, if Aaron Rodgers comes back, the
- 24:55Rams, obviously Matthew Stafford is coming back.
- 24:58If he got to sit for a year or two and really develop some more
- 25:00of the fundamentals and find a pressure plan, I think he could
- 25:03be a very solid starter. I don't love the idea even
- 25:06starting day one, which pushes him more to either the back end
- 25:08of the first round or early into the second.
- 25:11One who go to the local front here and start with the guy
- 25:14that, well, he was committed to Iowa for a long time and then he
- 25:17came back to Iowa for a couple of weeks.
- 25:19Grew up here on the east edge of our listening audience in
- 25:22southeast Polk, Kaden Proctor with Alabama, you see him, he's
- 25:26a behemoth. They're out there throwing
- 25:27passes out to him. We know about the athleticism
- 25:30for a guy that's 370 lbs. Is he that big now?
- 25:33But you always want more with him.
- 25:35You, he's a the kind of guy that you look at him and say he
- 25:38should be better than what he is.
- 25:40I think he'll probably get picked in the first round, maybe
- 25:43towards the tail end of it. But what are your thoughts on
- 25:45Kaden Proctor, a guy that certainly has immense talent?
- 25:49I think the biggest number for Kaden Proctor this week and the
- 25:52athletic testing, obviously for his size, he is a very good
- 25:54athlete. But I'm curious to see what the
- 25:56official weight number is because watching his tape, I was
- 25:59a little in between on whether he was a tackle or he could be a
- 26:01guard in the NFL. And I think that goes along with
- 26:04his weight. I think if he wants to stay at
- 26:05left tackle, he's got to get at least under 350, if not 340 lbs.
- 26:09If he weighs in at the rumored, you know, now that is saying,
- 26:12you know, he might have weighed as close to 390 at the beginning
- 26:15of the season and got down closer to 350 or 360.
- 26:18I think if he's up above 350, I think he might have to move
- 26:21inside. I do believe in his talent.
- 26:23I think he can be really, really good because you just don't see
- 26:25that many overwhelmingly large guys with pretty good
- 26:28athleticism like he has. But I do think he's going to
- 26:31have to keep his weight down to stay at tackle.
- 26:33So if you do draft him, and I do think he's a first round
- 26:35prospect, somewhere in the mid to late first round, if you
- 26:37draft him, you got to have a plan for where you're going to
- 26:39put him. And if you're going to leave him
- 26:40a tackle, you need to have a good plan, I think to keep his
- 26:43weight probably of under about 3:40.
- 26:45I know that Dalton Wasserman is our guest Pro Football Focus.
- 26:48Your latest mock draft is up, You have Dominic Orange.
- 26:50I was stating in the third round, I guess he crushed his
- 26:53interview in front of the media yesterday.
- 26:55That was one of the takeaways from it.
- 26:56But look what he's a heck of a player and didn't have a lot of
- 26:58help on that defensive line and they were double triple teaming
- 27:03him through certainly most of his final season in Ames.
- 27:06Your thoughts on Dominic Orange? You have him as a second day
- 27:08pick. I think a solid player amongst a
- 27:11group of really good run stoppers, right?
- 27:13I think these types of players over the last couple of years,
- 27:15you know, you talk about in this draft, Dominic Orange, Dante
- 27:18Corleone from Cincinnati, Kaden McDonald from Ohio State is
- 27:21thought to be the best 1 of this group.
- 27:22Those run stuffers that can take up a gap and a half and two gaps
- 27:26and really attack those double teams and free up space for
- 27:28linebackers. They're the types of interior
- 27:30players that make the rest of your front 7 better.
- 27:33Orange is a look, he's got good athleticism.
- 27:36He played in kind of a weird role in that Iowa State defense
- 27:38with that three man. So we'll have a little more
- 27:40support. Things will get a little tighter
- 27:42for him and maybe that'll work to his advantage in the NFL.
- 27:45But you know, it speaks to the depth of this defensive line
- 27:47class that somebody as talented as Orange might slip to the
- 27:49third round. He's going to be at least a
- 27:51solid early down player for somebody out there.
- 27:53When when people ask you who's your can't miss guy in this
- 27:57draft early first pair, I mean, you know, top five pick.
- 28:00Who is the can't miss player in this draft for you Dalton?
- 28:05For me, I think it's Caleb Downs, the safety from Alabama.
- 28:07I mean, we've just never, we've basically between, you know, one
- 28:10year at Alabama and two at Ohio State.
- 28:12We've basically just never seen him play bad football.
- 28:14And I know he's not as physically imposing as some of
- 28:16the elite safety prospects we've seen in recent years, Derwin
- 28:19James, Kyle Hamilton, guys like that.
- 28:21But his football intelligence is unreal.
- 28:24You don't start as a true freshman under Nick Saban at
- 28:27Alabama in the defensive backfield.
- 28:28That's not a thing. And Caleb Downs made it a thing.
- 28:31Then he goes to Ohio State for two years and he's the best
- 28:33defensive player in the country. To be honest.
- 28:35Mess with you. I think he's a game changer.
- 28:36He can play any role for your defense and he's another guy on
- 28:39the back and that's a force multiplier.
- 28:40He makes the rest of your defense better.
- 28:43He can fill in so many roles in coverage and against the run.
- 28:46I think it's Caleb Downs. I think he should be, at least
- 28:48in consideration, as high as #2 overall.
- 28:51Back to the local front, a couple of Iowa guys want to get
- 28:54your perspective on Jennings Dunker.
- 28:56He's fun, he's got the big red hair, he's got personality.
- 29:00He is he's a different kind of guy.
- 29:01Certainly a lot of people believe though the interior,
- 29:04he's going to be a guard at the next level, but a potentially a
- 29:07very good one. Your thoughts on him?
- 29:09And then also Kaden Weichen, who is a return specialist, didn't
- 29:12do a whole lot in the offense, but an elite level returner in
- 29:15the return game with the new rules in the NFL.
- 29:18Both of those guys, your thoughts?
- 29:19And and Weichen, who I think everybody had targeted maybe
- 29:22initially that'll be a free agent.
- 29:24He'll catch on somewhere with these new rules in the NFL, with
- 29:27the kickoff rule, could he hear his name selected?
- 29:30Maybe sixth, seventh round. Yeah, I'll start there with
- 29:32Dunker because I watched his tape one more time last week and
- 29:35he's a really interesting player because I think you, you
- 29:37mentioned it, got the personality, got the demeanor,
- 29:40has the aggression, absolutely to be an NFL offensive lineman
- 29:43and there's a lot of polishing, coaching that can really be put
- 29:46into his game. I don't think he's anywhere near
- 29:48as fundamentally sound as he could be to hit his feeling.
- 29:51I think he's a player that you could take mid to late day 2 and
- 29:54sit him for a year or two and develop them in the right
- 29:56system, especially if he gets in a similar, you know, kind of
- 29:59Shanahan's own run scheme kind of system like they ran in Iowa.
- 30:02I think dunker could be really good, but I need a year or two
- 30:05of development out of him, even just certain things just as get
- 30:08off at the line of scrimmage and certain fundamental things and
- 30:10pass protection. He's a good developmental
- 30:12prospect. I think if you whether he's at
- 30:14tackle or at guard, if you teach him right over the next year or
- 30:16two, I think he can be a starter.
- 30:18And then Wheaton's really interesting.
- 30:19You're right. He's a guy who popped a little
- 30:21bit at the Shrine Bowl. He's been the best, he's been
- 30:23the best returner in the country for the last two years.
- 30:25And you mentioned it with the increased number of tickle often
- 30:27look, we even see on the Super Bowl champions, they trade for a
- 30:30guy like Rasheed Shaheed made some huge place for them down
- 30:32the stretch on special teams. So I think we chin with the
- 30:35return ability and a little bit of what he showed in the slot at
- 30:38the Shrine Bowl. I think that's the guy who could
- 30:39go. He could get taken around six or
- 30:41seven, But there's a couple of those guys, you know, Berion
- 30:43Brown from LSU, Xavion Thomas from LSU as well.
- 30:46I think returners are getting more valuable again with the
- 30:48change in the kickoff rules. Dalton, is this your favorite
- 30:51time of the year? Is the season for you?
- 30:53You're so busy and you're so good at both.
- 30:54But you know, you mentioned the Shrine Bowl, the All Star Game
- 30:57games, etcetera. And then with the Combine, is
- 30:59this the best time for you professionally?
- 31:03I mean, the offseason is a lot of fun, right?
- 31:05When you think about team building and how many different
- 31:07theories you can go into, especially teams and new coaches
- 31:09and things like that. Now, I will say my favorite time
- 31:12of the year is the season, right?
- 31:13I, you know, I used to coach and it's like that weekly grind of
- 31:16preparing for games and trying to figure out who's going to win
- 31:19and why they're going to win and then going back and dissecting
- 31:22it. So I will say my the season
- 31:23itself is my favorite part, but the team building aspect as a
- 31:26whole that goes into these three or four months right after the
- 31:29season ends, it certainly is a lot of fun.
- 31:31And one of my favorite things really to do is find, you know,
- 31:33identify how many of those player and team fits right, who
- 31:36really fits in best where. That's how a lot of these draft
- 31:39boards especially are built. I'm hoping your draft board is
- 31:41spot on because you have the Oregon tight end.
- 31:44How do you say his name? Shadiq, who's an athletic freak,
- 31:47I think, and I'm a Broncos fan and that is a huge need for my
- 31:51squad. If he falls that far, obviously
- 31:55they run to the podium. I would hope.
- 31:57Is there a chance you think obviously you do, you've got him
- 31:59down there, that he's still available when Denver picks at
- 32:0230? I think there is a chance
- 32:04because when you talk about a locked in first round tight end,
- 32:07you're going to be talking about a special, special football
- 32:10player, right? We had two of them last year,
- 32:11Colston Loveland and Tyler Warren.
- 32:13You had one the year before and Brock Bowers.
- 32:15And you know, I think it's just a matter for Sadiq.
- 32:17Look, his stock is going to go up this week.
- 32:19He's going to tear up the combine.
- 32:20He is a very good athlete but didn't really show to be as
- 32:23productive as those guys were, right?
- 32:24Loveland was the center of Michigan's offense.
- 32:26Tyler Warren was everything for Penn State last year, Bowers at
- 32:29Georgia before that. I don't think Sadiq really
- 32:31played that role. There's a lot of potential for
- 32:33sure. I don't know that he's a top 20
- 32:35prospect in this draft. I think he could slip into the
- 32:37late first round and it'd be hard in this class, this team
- 32:40getting out of the first round. But I don't think he's as a
- 32:43lock. You know what, I saw some mock
- 32:44drafts earlier in the season talking about him going like
- 32:47close to top ten. I don't think he's that caliber
- 32:49a player, at least not yet. But I do think there's a
- 32:51possibility he could get in the mid, in the mid to late 20s
- 32:54here. And if he falls to Denver and
- 32:55Denver for our receiving grades was dead last with their tight
- 32:59end unit and receiving grade, I think that's really something
- 33:02that they would look into of Sadiq's the board.
- 33:03Fingers crossed, want to go to the running back position and
- 33:07you go back and you look through, I know the running back
- 33:10position is not what it once was.
- 33:11We rarely see a whole lot of guys go in the first round and
- 33:14we're going to get to love here in a moment.
- 33:15But Clyde Edwards a layer, I think we can say definitely a
- 33:19bus, not Jay Harris bust for a first rounder.
- 33:22Even Travis Etienne, he's talented, but it's not there.
- 33:26Brace Hall didn't go in the first round, but he was the
- 33:27first running back taken. He's on his way out with The
- 33:30Jets. You go through here, we saw
- 33:32Gente and a Marion Hampton, who was hurt last year, first round
- 33:35for the running back. A lot of teams shy away from it.
- 33:38Why is love different or should we consider love different
- 33:41coming out of Notre Dame? I don't know that it's different
- 33:45so much and I and I like that you mentioned the two first
- 33:47round picks from this past year with Jinti and Hampton, because
- 33:50what happened with both of those guys as well is that they were
- 33:52playing behind two of the worst offensive lines in the league,
- 33:55right? So running backs, it's so
- 33:56dependent at times on your offensive line and how well they
- 33:59can block. And that's really the problem
- 34:01with, you know, getting a back, getting picked in the top ten
- 34:03like Jinti did is look, usually those teams picking in the top
- 34:06ten, they don't generally have great offensive lines, right?
- 34:08It's part of the reason that they've only won 3-4 or five
- 34:11games the previous year, right? So look, I think Love is a hell
- 34:14of a prospect, man. I think you could you could say,
- 34:16you know, he's he's pretty close to equal to Ginty last year, a
- 34:19little bit different styles, but Love's an outstanding football
- 34:21player and in this class I do think he's going to be a top ten
- 34:24pick. It'll be interesting to see
- 34:25which team he ends up with and how developed that team's
- 34:28offensive line is as well. But that's going to be a big
- 34:31factor in it. But he's by far the best back in
- 34:33this class. The drop off to me is is just so
- 34:36wide, I mean wider than any other position to me in this
- 34:38class, Love and then the rest of the running back.
- 34:40So there's going to be an urgency to take him and
- 34:42especially his home run speed and he might run a four three
- 34:45this weekend. He shows that off.
- 34:47I think he's going top ten. I do.
- 34:49I think I got a bad feeling he's going to be a chief.
- 34:51Last thing, we'll let you go and get back to work here.
- 34:53What position there? There's more talent at fill in
- 34:57the blank position this year than previous drafts.
- 35:01Than previous drafts, I would say I tell you what, in the
- 35:04middle of the defense at all three levels is good.
- 35:06But this is as good a linebacker draft, especially in the first 3
- 35:09rounds as I can remember in several years.
- 35:11I mean, you talk about potentially 3 depending on what
- 35:13you think about Arvel Reece and he says he's an edge player.
- 35:16Some people think he's a linebacker.
- 35:17Sonny Styles measured in an absolute freakish numbers today,
- 35:21CJ Allen from Georgia's awesome, Anthony Hill from Texas, Jake
- 35:25Gold a from Cincinnati, Jacob Rodriguez from Texas Tech.
- 35:28We got a really good linebacker class.
- 35:30Honestly in in last year's class there was only maybe 4 guys that
- 35:33I four or five guys that I even kind of liked.
- 35:36This year it is a stack group that I think you're going to get
- 35:39good players really all the way through probably the fourth
- 35:41round life. You need a linebacker.
- 35:42You're going to be OK this year. Take one even on Day 2.
- 35:45If you're an NFL junkie, follow Dalton at PFF under score
- 35:49Dalton. PFF under score Dalton.
- 35:52Dalton Wasserman Pro Football Focus.
- 35:54Thank you. What you do for us, Dalton.
- 35:56We'll talk to you in the weeks ahead.
- 35:57Appreciate the time as we always do.
- 35:59Thank you. Absolutely appreciate you guys
- 36:01as always. Thank you.
- 36:02Good to talk to you, Dalton Wasserman as we checked in on
- 36:04the NFL. I, I would have loved to do this
- 36:07in my for my career. I've, I loved, I, I love to be a
- 36:12scout. You know that Matt Miller guy
- 36:13who's down with ESPN. We just not, we didn't discover
- 36:17him. We found him like in 2007.
- 36:20He was working out of his home in like Manhattan, KS.
- 36:23OK. And just started this as a hobby
- 36:26and now he's ESP NS, one of the ESPN draft guys.
- 36:29He's at NFL draft scout on Twitter.
- 36:34It could be done, I guess is where I was going.
- 36:36But what a great, what a great way to make a living, I would
- 36:38think. Yes, I could have Film give an
- 36:42opinion, right? Busy this time of year, then you
- 36:45watch football all year, then you, you know, you'd cover a few
- 36:48All Star games and a few senior bowls and off you go to India.
- 36:52I think it'd be a great a great gig.
- 36:53Very difficult to get into though, probably.
- 36:56I mean, because there are thousands.
- 36:58Well, there's thousands do. You know, there's a guy and I
- 37:03think he still lives in Iowa, patriotsdraft.com or at our NFL
- 37:09New England Patriots. He's probably listening or he
- 37:12could because now we're our our signal is expanded that lives in
- 37:17Iowa and is making a career doing this.
- 37:18It can be done. It can be.
- 37:21Patriots drafters I can't recall anyways.
- 37:24So you do not want Jeremiah Love to go to the Chiefs?
- 37:26I do not, no. You think he's going to be a
- 37:28stud? I think he's, yeah.
- 37:29I think that's what Kansas City needs.
- 37:31I remember April 2020, you crying about Clyde Edwards.
- 37:34A lair. Right.
- 37:35But I that's true. That's true.
- 37:37I'm just not a fan of the running back.
- 37:40That early in the draft. Yeah.
- 37:44What if you what? It hasn't gone well?
- 37:45No fair. What do the Chiefs need?
- 37:49A lot. You know who was the last camp
- 37:52miss backed Barkley to go early. Gentie went what, 6?
- 37:55I think he went 6. That was too much.
- 37:58And Dalton's 100% right. And and likewise with Hampton,
- 38:01two of the worst offensive lines in football, period.
- 38:04And Hampton was hurt. And Hampton was hurt.
- 38:06Hampton. I thought he was Bronco.
- 38:07I was convinced. He was really, yeah, convinced
- 38:09they were sniffing around. And then that kid from Texas and
- 38:12they never played God. I give anything.
- 38:14His name is on my squad. Do you want like, say, a Jordan
- 38:18Tyson? It'll fall.
- 38:20Yeah. Something like that.
- 38:22Denver needs a running back, a tight end, and a receiver.
- 38:25They need 3 skilled guys and you can grab.
- 38:27Maybe grab one from free agency. Draft 1.
- 38:31I'd like Siddique. Don't you like Siddique From
- 38:33Oregon? Yes.
- 38:34Yeah, I do too. Absolutely.
- 38:37I'd be stunned anyways. Well, fun time.
- 38:39Years. Yes, the draft moves closer.
- 38:41What are we doing draft wise? Well, we will be back at it once
- 38:44again with our yearly mock draft presented by Graphite
- 38:47Construction Group Group. We'll be doing that once again
- 38:49last year, I think we. I had so much fun.
- 38:52Last year I think we threaded the needle last year.
- 38:53So much fun. You, myself and Russ with
- 38:56graphite, they, we did it ourselves.
- 39:00We've had some different people come in, but we decided we're
- 39:02going to go that route and I think it worked incredibly well.
- 39:04I thought it was a blast, yeah. Going through and doing our own
- 39:07mock draft a couple days before we got a little hiccup or a
- 39:09little hurdle this year, though, because as we know, Russ is a
- 39:13huge yes. You dive in, he dives in.
- 39:18I don't dive in the same level you guys do, but he knows the
- 39:21draft as well as any fan. You're going to find out there
- 39:24also though, because he's a huge fan and a huge Chiefs fan and
- 39:28the season ticket holder, so they have this lottery every
- 39:30year. Where you can, the Chiefs do, or
- 39:32the NFL the Chiefs does. Where you can be one of the
- 39:35people they see on TV. He won it this year.
- 39:37No way. So when you're watching the
- 39:40draft coverage in April and they cut to the Chiefs.
- 39:43Pittsburgh right from. Pittsburgh, you're going to see
- 39:46Russ is going to be amongst that group of fans and the Chiefs
- 39:49contingent. In that little box.
- 39:51Or whatever. Absolutely.
- 39:52Yeah, yeah, yeah. Now, he also did tell me that
- 39:55you can anticipate hotel rooms are not exactly cheap in
- 39:58Pittsburgh that week. So going to cost a little bit to
- 40:01get out there, but he's going to.
- 40:02Remind Russ what he does for a living construction and who owns
- 40:06the company. Yes.
- 40:07I think he can pay the fray. He's a good dude.
- 40:09He's really good at the draft. That's so he won't be able to
- 40:12join us, obviously. Well, I think they go out, we
- 40:15talked about the date and maybe setting it maybe a little bit
- 40:18earlier than we've done in the past, maybe do it Monday or
- 40:20Tuesday. So first night of the draft is
- 40:22Thursday? Yes, and he would go Wednesday.
- 40:25I believe that is the case Tuesday before he goes.
- 40:27Absolutely. I want to do it with him one
- 40:29more time. That was so much fun.
- 40:30Yes. Had a blast.
- 40:31All right, we'll take a time out, come back.
- 40:33Trent's plays of the day. They're coming up next.
- 40:36Circus sports sponsors those your record yesterday was. 3:00
- 40:39and 4:00. We're at 500 on the week.
- 40:42Well, how many games today are you playing?
- 40:46The Big 10 game? Yes.
- 40:48Michigan State, Purdue. Yep, Peacock has that one.
- 40:51Trent's plays of the day or next.
- 40:53Miller and Condon talking sports with you on the Iowa Sports
- 40:55Radio Network. Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome
- 40:58back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 41:00Trenton, Ken, with you, our final segment here tomorrow.
- 41:03Tom Caker will join us Eugene repay hopefully haven't heard
- 41:07back from I'm sure he'll be fine is they don't travel this week
- 41:10of the Iowa State media they're home and then Mike Palm will
- 41:14join us from Circa sports see Circa is at least questioning
- 41:18the survivor participants whether they want did you see
- 41:22the. I did, yes.
- 41:24Jeff Benson has been talking about it.
- 41:26Want more than 10 for the minimum for the maximum entries?
- 41:30What did you did you fill out? Did you vote on it?
- 41:33I yeah, 10 is good, but people manipulate it.
- 41:36Well, sure, yeah, sure. You can always get more, you
- 41:39just won't be have your name on it.
- 41:40But I'm anxious to play this thing again.
- 41:43You're right back in, yeah. Aren't you?
- 41:45Yeah. Of course.
- 41:46Yeah, of course you are. Every single year.
- 41:48Yep, I'll donate my money. It's a tax, absolutely, but it's
- 41:53a fun one. It is.
- 41:54All right, let's make some money betting wise.
- 41:56How many games? Three games, 10 and 11 on the
- 41:59week, so we are under 500. Another losing week, another
- 42:02losing proposition. But we'll go right back to it
- 42:04again and see if we can turn around our fortune.
- 42:07After all, you know, backup trench, yes, stack up.
- 42:09Absolutely all in college basketball.
- 42:12Basketball tonight I'm playing the big one.
- 42:14Michigan State going to Purdue. I didn't do it on Monday.
- 42:18I wasn't a building believer, though I normally are back to
- 42:21believing in the building. Purdue has lost three times this
- 42:25year in Mackey, something that is a rarity, certainly under
- 42:28Painter. Historically, they dominate
- 42:30Michigan State in this building. I'm not going to be scared of
- 42:33the big price. I'm going to lay it tonight
- 42:35until the seven and a half and I'm going to take Purdue to
- 42:39dispatch Sparty. Two other plays.
- 42:42Winthrop playing well. We've seen them in the
- 42:44tournament plenty of times. They are playing some good
- 42:47basketball. Going to lay the 6 1/2 tonight
- 42:48as they go to Charleston Southern.
- 42:51And then finally, I talked about this team earlier.
- 42:53You looked at me funny. Denver, The Pioneers now they
- 42:56got an Ankeny kid on their squad and he's really good.
- 42:58But Denver going to lay the 3 1/2.
- 43:01They brought in a bunch of guys from D2, the Drake model with
- 43:04McCollum. They're starting to play really
- 43:06well. They had a big win over the
- 43:07weekend against Saint Thomas, the best team in the Summit.
- 43:11They keep it rolling and Oral Roberts, Denver -3 1/2.
- 43:15All right, we'll be back at it tomorrow.
- 43:17We appreciate you spending as much time as you do with us in
- 43:20the last couple of hours. But coming up next off the
- 43:22bench, Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts, Miller and Condon, we
- 43:25talk sports with you Monday through Friday from noon to two
- 43:27on Des Moines Sports Station One O 6.3 KX at home and the Iowa
- 43:31Sports Radio Network.
