- 0:41SPEAKER_02: Um I have the pleasure of having my my friend Tom Sorsby join us for the very first episode of the new LST.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Tom, thank you very much for joining.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Thank you very much for having me.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Feel honoured to have made it for the first step.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we're we're it feels way more professional than normal.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is uh an impressive setup we've got.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm looking forward to uh getting stuck in, especially a few of the funny sounds that might creep in later on.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we've got a we've got a deck in front of us that we've just worked out can do like an air horn and some crickets and stuff, so I'm sure we're gonna play around with that.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: We yeah, we got going.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Um I really wanted to make sure that we had kind of less dodgy Wi-Fi Zoom calls, trying to make this a real thing.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Um, really grateful, like I said, to be at Marlis Sports Club, bit of like a uh being at a very authentic hockey club, being able to record here, so very grateful for that.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, we're gonna have Yup is 100% gonna be still involved, but he is a very busy man.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: Trying to track him down is is incredibly difficult.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: He is gonna be joining us for episodes when he can, because of his, I guess maybe just this big timeness.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: But we're gonna get Crofty back, we're gonna get SOAS, we're gonna get a whole um load of hosts, which hopefully are gonna be incredibly good for you guys to listen to.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: So we are also very importantly brought to you by Y1.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: Now we've been brought to you by Y1 for quite some time, but we are now officially brought to you by Y1.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: Um they are they are fully fully involved in in the creative side in the stuff that's going on behind the scenes.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: Very, very grateful to be in a in a in a new relationship with them.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: So to kind of kick that off, we are going to do a giveaway.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: So to win a brand new VLB in LBX Graphics.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: So the VLB is a bit of a thicker logo shape for all you nerds out there.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: Um what we want you to do to be in a chat with a chance to win this brand new VLB in LBX Graphics is be following LST and Y1 Hockey on Instagram, and then we want you to send us a DM on Instagram with your best idea for a segment on the show.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: It can be anything, make him as kooky, crazy as you like, but the best idea in in our humble opinion, we'll first of all we'll talk about that segment, we'll make that segment a real thing, but secondly, you will get sent a stick.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: So follow us, follow why I want, send us a an idea for a segment, have a chance to put in a why I want stick.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: Have again.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Um we're joined by Tom, there's lots of sort of hockey stuff that's gone on in the last couple of months.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: It's now November when we're recording.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: Um we are into like a brand new season.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Well, we're six weeks, eight weeks into a brand new season.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: Tom, for you personally, you've moved from Den Bos um and you've moved to the All-Stars of Amsterdam.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Um big, big move uh, you know, up into the north of of Holland, uh to one of the the most historic, beautiful clubs in in the world.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: First of all, how's that been for you?
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's been great.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: We've uh had a very good start to the season.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: We were on a win streak until that ended at the weekend against Bloomendal.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: So we dropped our first points in a draw against them.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's been a really fun start.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: The group's a really nice group of guys, really, really high hockey level.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: So training's been seriously fun, seriously tough, and it's been yeah, lovely to get stuck into a new city, uh, explore Amsterdam a little bit, and yeah, throw myself into it, it's been super fun.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I mean anyone who's watching, who's badgering up watching the Hoof Classic highlights, I would I would implore you to go and watch Amsterdam play because it seems like you have a crazy fun style of hockey.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Um, how is that like is it is it differed a lot from your your your Den Bosch experience?
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: Like, is there any big differences any similarities?
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think both teams play very, very different styles.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: And Denbosch also doing really well this season.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: And and we we always had um yeah, like a well, I've always had an eye on how they're doing as well throughout the season, and yeah, it's it's really really different.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: It's hard to kind of describe.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Um both teams are are super strong, but the I feel like I'm really enjoying the style that we have at Amsterdam, it's kind of like so fluid, so interchangeable.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Um you find yourself on kind of all areas of the pitch, and yeah, it's it's it's really fun.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: And there's some like really, really talented players in that team, and even now you're just finding yourself learning new things and picking new bits up and kind of trying to get everyone to gel on the same page has just been super fun.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: You obviously have like Duco, uh I could never say it's you could hang me for Tungle Tangle Kong, can you say it?
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: Tongue Tongwalk, yeah.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: Sounds fun.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: Obviously, he's showing the top team with you.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: You have that the Cassiean brothers, you have Midendorp, you have obviously like Oli Payne and Gold.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Like, who's been who is someone like has anyone vowed you?
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, a lot of the people that you said for sure.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's one of those things when we have a team meeting before a game at the weekend and you see our starting 11 up on the board, it's like, wow, this is a seriously good team.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: And even like through to the the whole squad, we've got like such a talented group of boys, but yeah, I think all of them are just what everyone's so different in the team, brings so many different strengths, and that's part of the beauty of our team game, is you kind of never really know what's coming next, but that's also like an amazing thing.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: But I would say, yeah, Diane Kasim is just like one of the most consistent and skillful people to train with.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's the ball is absolutely glued to the end of a stick, it's a nightmare to try and get it off him, uh, but also really good when he's on your side in training.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Uh, but yeah, like all the boys that you said, I mean, like the the pace and power of someone like Duco is I've never seen a ball someone hit a ball so hard at ball.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: I don't know how old he's uh finding it in his first few weeks with him, and then yeah, like uh Flores and uh Mustafa, like some of the skills that these boys have.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: It's just yeah, it's crazy fun to uh be a part of.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: And what would you say when people are gonna go?
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: Everyone's kind of like the murmurings I'm hearing is like it's Amsterdam's to lose.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: What what's the what's the deal with that?
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: Obviously, you come from maybe a slightly more humble team in Den Bos where you're clawing for that playoff spot, whereas you've gone into an Amsterdam team where you're so stacked that it's like, okay, now like everyone's iron us up.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: You know, you see Amsterdam, a game against Amsterdam, they're they're kind of coming for you.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's interesting because everyone obviously as they normally would, but everyone really wants to beat us.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: You get the feeling that everyone doesn't want us to win, and that kind of just gives you a little bit more hunger to try and win in a way that everyone is pitching up like 10 out of 10 to try and beat you on that day.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: And it means that every game's a huge game.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: And yeah, it's uh I think the danger is you could see it as a lose-lose situation.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: Like if you win, you're expected to, and if you don't, then it's a failure.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: But we're not really it doesn't really feel like that in the group.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: We're just we don't even feel like we've hit top gear yet, like we've been playing some really good stuff, but we don't feel like we've fully unlocked like the potential of the group yet, which is made me fair at this point in the season with a few new players in there.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I'm I'm I think we're largely just really excited to see what heights we can get to as a team.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: And you know, if a byproduct of that is winning stuff, then I think that's gonna be a good thing.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: Pretty exciting.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: I'm looking forward to chatting to Yup to see how he uh well we haven't played them yet.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: We've actually got them this weekend, so I'm not sure when the episode's coming out, but in the follow-up episode two, maybe we can uh maybe we can debrief that a little bit.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sounds good.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: Um I'm I'm I'm like keeping a keen eye.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: Like the obviously England hockey season aside, um small tweaks to the league structure this year in the um there's no more phase three.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: It's still a pretty complicated system, if you ask me.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: We have a phase one, you play eleven games, then phase two, you top six and bottom six, and then phase three is a very simple two-legged quarter final, so one plays eight, two seven, etc.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Um with um aggregate score.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: So you take your score from the first game into the second game, which I think in in essence will be really good.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: I think probably the one v eight and two v seven, maybe more towards cricket scores in if if I've kind of if I'm guessing right uh from from the results so far this season, but I'm looking forward to three, six, four, five.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: What would you say like from the outside as a as a Dutch player?
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Do you think that's a good move?
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think this system this year seems a little bit cleaner and a little bit uh easier to follow than previous years.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: I also like the two-legged games.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: I think that's something that I've only played in the playoffs once uh with Denboss, and it's really, really fun having a two-legged game.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: It does make the first game quite interesting because with a it kind of becomes like a 120-minute game rather than two games next to each other.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: So if the game's really close going into the back end of the first one, it's like the team that's winning doesn't really want to try and score loads because then the risk is that they then concede going into the second day, and then the team that's winning is a bit like, well, I'd quite like starting tomorrow at one or two goals ahead.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Maybe you know, risking that third goal isn't worth the risk reward.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: So it's quite an interesting dynamic.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: I think it used to be best of three, um, which then made it kind of different, whereas the the the two-legged makes it almost like one really long game.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: And like I I really like the fact that this is going to be a thing where you know you get home support, uh, especially for for English clubs where you really want the the crowds.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: We have just I've just played Exeter away and um was a pretty fun experience when you uh you know I was getting abused for the first full half.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: I know Sam Ward was getting abused.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: Uh Crofty definitely took some abuse, but that was pretty warranted because it's Crofty.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: But like um the more times you can go to a game and have the atmosphere.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: I know that you you're kind of blessed with it in Holland, but I know here it seems to be it seems to be getting way better.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: Um Beaston have just improved their setup again.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: Um they they seem to go from strength to strength at the moment.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: They have a brand new stadium, I say stadium stand, and it's kind of a small stand with a with a bit of a tinny sound to it.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: So if there's like 10 fans in there, sounds pretty loud.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: But what I was gonna say is that quarterfinal, you know that you're gonna get a home game, you know that they can advertise it, you know that you know you they can really get stuck into the opposition team, which I I'm really, really excited about.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think that's really good.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, some of the Serb 10 boys that came into Bishon this week were uh saying how fun the Beast in the Way game was this year with the new stand and the acoustics and stuff.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I'm sure going away to the the university side is always an experience because just getting chat for 60 minutes is uh is good.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: Actually, our our boys played in the Gold Cup last week, and Peino and I were given the evening off, so we were down supporting, and it was one of the smaller clubs in Amsterdam, so we cycled to the game, and it was kind of close to on a university campus, and some of the chat was going straight over my head because I didn't understand what they were saying.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: But I've always been saying they were getting tucked into on the Thursday night, and there were some flares and fireworks, and this was like freezing cold Thursday night in Amsterdam, and a few hundred people turn out to abuse um some of the big timers.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's good to see that it's uh it's reciprocated across the pond, which would be a good thing.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, you would have loved it.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: I was got called Rabbit for the first 30 minutes, which I haven't had before, but just just because I stood out on the left um and just had 10 unishoots to start with, just absolutely getting stuck in.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Anyone who came close to the left was getting abused, which to be honest with you, I think it can have an impact.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: Like you could see a few of our guys were like, you don't really want to go and stand at left half in the first half.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: Like you know that you go over there and you're just getting absolutely stuck into.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: And it's not like it can get blurred out by hundreds of people when it's just like five of them, it's pretty pretty fun.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: I think that's always good when you know halfbacks in a team don't tend to have a side that you play on.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: It's kind of just you're a halfback, so you play either left or right.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: So sometimes if there's a decent crowd, you can see the halfbacks kind of battling it out for who's gonna stand in front of the crowd first and who's gonna get the easy ride by the dugouts or something.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean it did go well, they were like really in the game for the first 40 minutes, and then suddenly we we managed to to clock some goals.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: We've got obviously a new team, I'm sure, talking a little bit about OGs next time.
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: But um wanted to like get your takes on a couple of things.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: First of all, like it's been a few months now since the World Cup, but obviously, like we haven't talked about it.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, we'll do a bit of a bigger episode on it.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: Um, but what was your take on the World Cup?
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: How was the experience for you, especially like playing, I guess, a home game?
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: It was in Amsterdam.
- 13:23SPEAKER_02: We we we obviously had a disappointing finish.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: Like, what was your what was your like viewpoint of the tournament itself?
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think mine will be similar to what it was just after it finished.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: I think we had a we had a really good tournament, but letting ourselves down in that one game kind of cost us the the route through to the semi-finals, really.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: But I think yeah, it was it was an amazing tournament.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: It was actually really fun because I'd only just moved to Amsterdam and then like a few weeks before, and then the tournament was in Amsterdam.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: So it was kind of weird to be you know living in a hotel in the city that you've just moved to, but it was it was really fun.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: Like the atmosphere was great.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, the Netherlands and Belgium always put on a great show for those kind of tournaments, the fans were great, yeah.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: The the kind of party tent around the pitch and all the atmosphere.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: I think the parents and everyone that came to support us just had an amazing time there.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I kind of like really mixed emotions.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: It was a super cool tournament, but I think you know, probably as you feel, when we don't make it as far as we'd hope to make it, it's always kind of you leave them with a little bit of a sour taste in their mouth.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: I am really glad in a very, very tiny podcast aspect that I've been saying for a while that the top eight teams in the men's game can beat each other, and you end up with this crazy thing where like, you know, the pro league finish was Belgium, England, Holland, maybe, Australia maybe, and then suddenly you have this like Germany-Spain final where it kind of proved that like the standard in that top eight is so incredibly high at the moment that anyone could anyone could win.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: And yeah, like but at the same time, like incredible disappointment that that that was how it kind of ended for us in in this new format of the you know second pool phase.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: We you know messed up against Argentina, a very clinical Argentina, um, with a with a yeah, with a with a star man.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: I was gonna ask you very quickly on the controversy of the women's semi-final.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: Did you did you like it was it was so huge.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: I have this like take that it's actually very good for hockey because it was like so massive, massively controversial.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: But what was your do you remember like we watched it as a team a little bit?
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was crazy.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, also just to see all of the Belgian boys come out in the comments on like the Instagram post to defend the girls being like this was you know ridiculous was was yeah, insane to see as well.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh yeah, it definitely was a goal, wasn't it?
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well we know it was a goal.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: I do think that it just begs the question for I guess for the context of it, remembering it was a Belgian Holland semi-final for the women and uh the Belgians, it was always like five minutes to go, I think.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: All of the Belgians went through and uh did a lovely run and hit a beautiful reverse stick in the goal.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: There was a very minor call for shielding, uh not for shielding, sorry, for um obstruction between players, which was referred, and everyone in the stand, all of the umpires, every fan, every player watching was like that's absolutely fine.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: And the woman in the booth saw a pr a pretty interesting take on a on a obstruction call and gave the decision to Holland, and therefore they went through to the final that Belgium missed out.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: I have got to say, I do think the video referral needs looking at again, like how we can't do it like we do, like rugby do it, or like it's almost said, you can look at the screen, be having a conversation, the umpires be having a conversation with the person in the box, so it's almost like a three-way call.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: Do you agree with that?
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think so.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: It it's one of those things that it's always so good to have.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think you know, football have been calling for it for ages because some of the VAR stuff, like there's no system that's perfect, like football have problems.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: It does seem that rugby have fewer problems than most, so like maybe people should be tapping into the the kind of system that rugby has to use theirs because no one really complains about the like there might be the old one.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, my my rugby knowledge is maybe not as good to know that, but they do seem to have very clear comms though.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and they're very polite to the rest.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: That'd be a tough change, yeah.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: But it's more yeah, I think it's more the fact that like you have when you have a big screen in front of you and you can see the replay, why are the umpires absolutely obsessed with looking away from the big screen?
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: Do you know what I mean?
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: Like, because the advice advice they will say, My advice for you is so it's not them telling them.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: Why aren't they saying like my advice for you?
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: And then they're having a back and forth.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: I just can't get my head around it.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: Even now when we're in games, I'm like, you can talk to them, yeah, you can like work out with them what you think the right decision is, rather than this huge moment, it's just some woman in a box who's looking at the game who can't get the sense of what's gone on, who can't get a sense of what everyone's thinking of like maybe the right call, and she's just got a lonely, like very lonely.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: It's a tough decision, like it's a tough position to be in for that person, I think.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because I think they they did a good job because I don't know, a few years ago, it seemed like every referral took forever, and then some games would last so long, and you'd have this weird thing where there'd be periods where you'd be standing for like four or five minutes on the pitch, like getting cold or whatever when while they waited for the decision.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: So I think they really tried to speed them up or like tidy up the process.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's such a good thing that we have in our sport, but again, it seems to always be this area of dispute, which is not helpful.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: So I think, yeah, I'm I'm not sat here with all the answers, but it it's always a talking point, isn't it?
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: I yeah, I'm just um I just feel like it's an easy fix.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: Like that, I think they have this weird thing about like the big screen not being able to look at it, or you have to refer before the the highlight comes on and stuff like that.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: I just think it can be quite clearly changed up, it can quite clearly make it easier for the umpires to make decisions together.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Because they are a little team, aren't they?
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: Like probably they view themselves like a little team, like get together, guys, have a little chat.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: I used to think something that could be good because there's been a few recently, particularly in shootouts and in open play, where they're trying to decide whether the ball's gone across the line before the hooter, and when you slow the sound, because obviously, like the pitcher is going to travel quicker than the sound does, because I think someone's got there's a hooter in the stadium somewhere, or someone's stood there with a hooter.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: But just like that.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: I'm so glad that came in.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: Sorry, it's incredibly I would like to see it like ice hockey.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: Have you seen now like when the timer's out, the goal there's like a light or like um maybe the the the posts could light up like red or green or like you know when the timer stops?
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: It's like there's like a a light that comes on rather than the sound of the hooter, because I think there's a bit of a delay.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: That's a great idea.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: And you haven't told this to anyone else?
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: No, just I just thought it.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: Well, I've I've had thought about this is the first time I've said it.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, because it'd be hard, it'd be super cool if they could have it like around the goal, but they're obviously not going to have that expense.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: But what if it was just a light on the top?
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: A light on the top.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: Well, like a because the camera comes from above the goal, so there could just be like a strip of LEDs that's just for the camera.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: So in a shootout, light goes red if the ball's not over.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: Because to be honest, I think we got away with one as well against the Netherlands, where they thought they'd scored because the ball was across the line.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: And there was like one angle that was 100% a goal.
- 20:46unknown: Yeah.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: But there was one angle on the video that did look kind of obscure.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: And then there was one angle on the goal that uh like then there was like the the infamous photo that someone had taken from the angle where it looks like it's a good yard across the line.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: So I don't know if we also need like a like a I don't know, you wouldn't be able to get a sensor in the ball like football to see if the whole ball's over the line, but maybe like an like an above camera that would allow you to see whether there's like daylight.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: I think it's a top idea.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: It's a top idea.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: I don't think it'd be even that difficult either, just to connect them together and just make it super easy.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: Has the ball across the line, has it not?
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: You're onto something top.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: Going back to the World Cup, like how was your experience with the the the the like fans?
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: Like, did you did you did it live up to the hype that you thought it would?
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think it's always difficult because obviously we would we don't want up to play in the semis in the final, and that's really where it comes alive, I think.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, I think I think it did live up.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: There's obviously a few if you play depends on your game is because there's a few like daytime games, and it also depends who you follow.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: So if like the Dutch ladies were in the same window of time as us, then there's more people in the fan park and more people around to watch.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: But no, the the yeah, if you play in the middle of the Day, I think there were a few games that were a little bit quieter for us, but largely, yeah, I think the um the experience of a World Cup was great.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think down in Belgium it looked really cool as well.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: They had some um they're always good at on there getting the crowd pumps up before a game, there's always really good music, it kind of gets the vibe going.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I think they had some cool stuff down in the Belgian stadium with like the DJs on the pitch and some of the light shows and stuff like that.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: So yeah, yeah, what do you think?
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was I was I was incredibly impressed.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: I think like for the for the fans, for anyone that went out having the the like the VIP experience um apparently was uh incredible.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: I don't know how, but I managed to get the kid Nick and the kids into into the VIP area, the Deloitte tent, which they said was f phenomenal.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: Uh thanks to Perman Black shout out per for that.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: Um couldn't find any tickets.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: I've I've never had this experience in my life, but you know, when you think like we're gonna play a game and I need to get tickets, Nick and Nick and the kids decide to call I'm late, and you're like, I need to get tickets for them, and then you go on the website and you're like it's sold out, and you're like, wait, what?
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: Hockey, we've sold out stuff at hockey, and then I was like like trying to use any contact I had to try and find some tickets, and they said, and then the you know the reports back were like how amazing the the experience was, you know, outside in the fan park, in the all the shops were incredible.
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: Um it had a whatever music stand, what would you call that?
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: Like a like stage, yeah, stage, like a huge stage.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: All of the areas that they had like a kids' day where there was loads of stuff that they filled the pitches with, you know, just areas where people just could not get bored there.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: And I just thought it was absolutely insane how how cool it was.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: And you know, it lived up to the hype in that ex in that in that um regard.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: And then on the pitch, you always get the like you said, the hype men, the hype women, whatever coming out, the mascots, just people just love hockey out there.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think that's what makes it so special is that you're playing in in front of crowds that are truly passionate about hockey.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: I wonder how we could do it more and how you could like almost like get it, because surely there are passionate people out there outside of Holland.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, obviously India's a good example, but like I'd still love to go to more faraway places where you could go and people be passionate about seeing hockey played.
- 24:20SPEAKER_02: Um I guess that's a bit of a tangent, but like where would you say is that is the best place you could play, or maybe you have played, that would be like a a great place for a you know a World Cup or a or a different tournament?
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: Because you don't want to go and you know, like we've been to Oman that was you know, like there's just no one who likes hockey there.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: You've gone to Egypt this year that really like there wasn't really like many people there.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: But surely there are places where you'd be like, this is a cool place to play.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: I feel like in South America they always seem to pull quite a few people out to watch.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: I wonder if like a I'm not sure about the qualified that some of the boys played in Chile.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think I think they actually might be uh hosting a bid for the 2030 World Cup Chile.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: Interesting.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: Which could be cool.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think the South American audience seems to be pretty big.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: I know Lil played out there, and I think there's been some serious crowds when when she's played games.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: So maybe we've not really been we've been there for pro league, but we've never really been there for a big tournament.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: So maybe like a South American trip.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: I think, you know, in in India, like you said, they're they're always pulling people out to to get some good crowds out there.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: Obviously, the hockey audience is huge in India.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I get you.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm just um thinking on the spot, what could you do?
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: Uh what what what could be a cool thing?
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: I think Chile would be cool.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: I think I think it's it's understandable that you always want to kind of go to the same places like Amsterdam, such a what big one.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: Even when we're like we've got the Euros next year in London, which I think was gonna be really cool.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: You know, they they're gonna ch change the rugby stadium, the stoop where uh Harlequins play and move it into a hockey stadium again.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: Which I think we both played in that one in 2019.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, which was you know a special experience.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: That was ten, twelve thousand people, wasn't it?
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: Which I think will be amazing.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: I think it's just maybe the opportunity to take it elsewhere, maybe even outside of the capitals.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: I'm really, really excited for the again.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: I know it's Holland, but the EHL being in um in Ironthoven this year, yeah.
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: Uh I think when you just move it around, I'm I'm still adamant that you put a tournament into like Beeston or something in Nottingham, like you would get big crowds and you'd get people who are interested.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, I remember playing with Serverton at OR back in maybe 20 2019, 2020, maybe.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: And it's all uh such a good, like iconic EHL venue, that one.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: So looking forward to looking forward to be there.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: And also actually, it's good for British people to come out.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, the Netherlands is so close, it's like 45 minutes on the plane where we get the train or drive or ferry or whatever.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: So actually we've been able to get some British support out to those kind of events is great.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: And Euro Hockey League, very quickly touch on that.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: We're obviously on different sides of the draw, which I'm pretty buzzing about, like OGs being on a side when we've we've made the final eight, you're in the final twelve.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: It's it's turned the women's and men's competition this year, is is the exact same where there is um eight teams vying for the last four quarterfinal spots both sides.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: Having um, I know that we've already qualified for the quarters.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: You are who are you playing in your final eight game?
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: We have Bracks in the first game, which is where Ollie Beacons has just come from.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: So he's got his uh old club that he's played for for his whole life in the in the first rounds.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: That's that's funny for him.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: But you're excited for that?
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: I think the bracks are a very good team, yeah.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: Very good team.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be a really big game, yeah.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: Looking forward to that one.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: And then I believe if we get through that round, I think we would have to face Rotterdam.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: Yes, you are correct.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know on our side that um Club de Campo and Lind Nagavi, however you say that, the Irish team, whoever wins that is gonna play us.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: And I know that OR are playing oh, good question, Phil.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: I've messed it up.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: OR are playing someone, not I don't think a particularly strong team off the top of my head.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: And the winner of that will play Wat Ducks, that's on one side, and then Serbiton.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: I think they're playing they're playing the Swiss team that messed up.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: No, Serbiton are playing oh Serbiton playing Royal Ori, the Belgian team, and the winner of that will play Hamburger Polo, the German team.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: So I think you also and that is your side of the draw.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: I think that's a that's a really strong side of the draw, which I think is going to be really tasty.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: I think our side is definitely a little bit weaker.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: And again, I'm not gonna be silly, as last year I said, made some bold predictions that did not come true.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: But I am very, very excited about that draw.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: Like I assume we all probably played Club de Campo, but having watched a little bit of Lindsay Nagarvey uh in the first round, they looked pretty handy.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: Um are you happy to see Rotterdam or is that a bad thing?
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: Do you think would you prefer to play, be playing a different team?
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: The thing about the EHL is it's such like there's not that many games, and you're gonna have to beat lots of good people to win it.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: So actually, I think if you're gonna win it, then I don't mind having some big games along the way, as if if you know the hope is that you do get far in the tournament.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: I think you want to be playing in these big games, you want to be playing against the big teams, and yeah, whilst you could be like, Oh, I wish we had like a good route, I think it's also super fun just to have like just throwing in at the deep end two big games and then yeah, see how it goes.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I think I I was pretty much right apart from Aranya Rhoda playing SV Arminan.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: So I was kind of right about that as well.
- 29:41SPEAKER_02: Not a tip top team.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: So uh yeah, O OR will we'll probably play Arminan and SV Arminen and then go through to play what ducks.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, it's I think it's a pretty fascinating one.
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: I think um again, does it work out that OR have got a nice route?
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: What ducks are obviously a strong team, but like a nice route through to the semis could be could be really interesting.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: Um and to have a home crowd get through to the semi-final obviously is good.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: I I obviously hope that doesn't happen because I'm hoping to to to to beat them.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I'm I'm I think this is going to be a really good Euro hockey league looking at this looking at this draw, I think there's gonna be a hell of a lot of good good quality hockey plays.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: Um who would you say if you if you couldn't say yourselves, would you say from the last couple of years of like watching?
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: I know you've been down at Denboss, I know that you know the the dream was to play for Denboss in the when they had the finals.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: Would you say like, is there someone you're you're particularly wary about, someone looking out for, or someone you say is the favourites in your opinion?
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: Apart from Amsterdam, I'd say it obviously.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: I think Polo has no good player.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they always they always look good.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: I think they've had a really good start to the season.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: And I mean Bracks are also a really good team, and obviously we've got them first up.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's so tough to call the EHL.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: And it's so weird because each it's one of those ones when you look at like the Champions League in football, each each team kind of has a different run-in based on what their league systems are like.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: So like the the English league system, where you're at in that phase of the league is maybe really different to where we would be at in our phase of the league.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: It depends how you tied up the playoffs, for example, and you can focus on the EHL, or are you really scrambling to make a certain position in the league?
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: And I think I don't know, like with the Champions League, because they always say I think PSG have a bit of an easier run around Champions League time so that they can rest some people and things like that.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: It's so dependent on what your form is like at the time and where your energy, where you can afford to put your energy at certain points.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: I don't know what you think on on that.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: I do agree.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: I think like for the Germans, this year I guess it's like an it's a late March um finals, which is actually very early in the grand scheme of things.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: Normally it's into April time, which I say is probably gonna benefit um more of maybe maybe the English clubs, maybe because I know the Germans fit start late, they they finish their indoors, so like whether or not they can get up to speed as quickly.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Um again, it doesn't give you as much prep time to to really hit the ground running.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: You really want people to be in like the peak of their season, don't you, when like you're gonna go to EHL and and really fight out.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, having watched you guys for the for the I watched Amsterdam last year and I just thought it's an incredibly fun team to watch.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: And I think as people know if they've listened to me enough on the pod, is that I love like pure like hockey and you know get rid of the deep zone and just play hockey and play with like freedom.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: And I think that that for neutral I would want uh you guys to to have a run at a run at it.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: Um I also do I I you know I I I have a lot of respect for Serberton.
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: I think they are still growing.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: I think they lost Connor Williamson this year, which is going to be tricky for them because he's a fantastic spare man gone to Blumendale.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: Um I'm not gonna say I think Serbit's gonna have a run because they're on a really, really tricky, tricky side of the draw.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: But I I just hope to see some you know six-five games, some games where you have like crazy action, like really a real amount of passion.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: Um, like watching that Hamburg at Amsterdam game last year was like very like you know, felt like a kid again watching, and which is what you want more and more of.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: Whereas like you know, when teams just sit in the deep zone, you know, you have to almost like pick it apart.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: It's I just don't think it's as fun for the neutral.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: I'm still trying to come up with the rules to change that, like what you could pitch to FIS to be like how do we get rid of it?
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's interesting.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: I think um it has seemed to me a bit of a theme for a while, hasn't it?
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: With it's the kind of deep you know, playing against the deep the the deep zone sort of team.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: So it'd be interesting to see when's the trend gonna change, yeah.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: When are we gonna kick the trend?
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the trend's probably gonna come around again at some point, and I wonder what's what we're gonna do.
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: Well the Germans the Germans keep winning things.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: So how do we do because they've won the 2023 World Cup, they got silver at Paris, and then they've just won the 2026 World Cup, playing that exact style, and also almost like shit housing people on the way there because they almost say we do not give a shit about the pro league, we don't care.
- 34:23SPEAKER_02: Um, they almost like null you in lull you in, and then suddenly they were incredibly efficient at the World Cup.
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: Like if they keep proving proving that that is working, I feel like until they start being unsuccessful, the trend's gonna continue short.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: Argentina also played a little bit like that.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, again, very uh you know, Argentina played a very different style to a lot of teams that we play against, you know.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: We especially like the man-to-man teams, it's kind of you know, you it sort of does what it says on the tin, whereas then you get these like different styles.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: I think it's good to have loads of different styles in the game though, as long as you know you're not playing against the low zone every week in every game, you know, there's if there's the odd one in there, I think that's okay.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: But if it's yeah, if it becomes the trend and all of a sudden you know, all eight quarter finalists are playing the low zone at the HL, then that'll be disappointing.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean I I can't do this like I mean I'm obviously not the coach of OGs, but I hope when OGs come around, we're not playing a deep zone.
- 35:20SPEAKER_02: Well, not so far, but I know that it fits into your you know your ethos as well over like how hockey should be played.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: So hopefully we can hopefully we can come a little bit out of there.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: Um guess yeah, coming back to to just let's stick together in general.
- 35:36SPEAKER_02: I'd like to say obviously thank you.
