- 0:28Speaker 1: Bear by Laura Rontree Smith, Hunting a Name. Little Bear
- 0:35Speaker 1: cried boo hoo, boo hoo. He cried so hard that
- 0:41Speaker 1: his tears fell into his bowl of bread and milk.
- 0:45Speaker 1: The tears made the milk taste salty. What is the matter,
- 0:51Speaker 1: asked Papa Bear. Little Bear did not say a word.
- 0:56Speaker 1: He only cried boo hoo. Mam said, every one teases
- 1:02Speaker 1: little Bear because he has no name. Why didn't you
- 1:07Speaker 1: give him a name, asked Papa Bear. Mama Bear said
- 1:12Speaker 1: there were not enough names to go round. If you
- 1:16Speaker 1: could look in and see the whole Bear family at supper,
- 1:20Speaker 1: you would not wonder that there were not enough names
- 1:23Speaker 1: to go round. There at the table sat Mama and
- 1:27Speaker 1: Papa Bear and seventeen little bears. They all had bowls
- 1:32Speaker 1: of bread and milk for supper. After supper, the bears
- 1:37Speaker 1: played a game of tag and went to bed. They
- 1:41Speaker 1: all went to bed but little Bear. He sat in
- 1:44Speaker 1: his little red rocking chair. Little bear was crying softly
- 1:49Speaker 1: boo hoo. At last, when the house was still and
- 1:55Speaker 1: Papa and Mama Bear had gone to bed, little Bear
- 1:58Speaker 1: crept downstairs. He opened the door and went hurrying down
- 2:03Speaker 1: the road. What do you suppose little bear was going
- 2:07Speaker 1: to do? He was going to find a name. Little
- 2:11Speaker 1: Bear could read very well, and by and by he
- 2:15Speaker 1: came to an old sign. The words on the sign
- 2:19Speaker 1: were partly rubbed off. There was only one word left.
- 2:24Speaker 1: It was the word fire, fire. Fire. That is a
- 2:30Speaker 1: fine name, said little Bear. I will call myself fire.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Pretty soon he met an old owl. The owl said,
- 2:40Speaker 1: what is your name? Little bear? Fire shouted little bear.
- 2:46Speaker 1: How do you know it is your name? Asked the owl.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Little Bear ran on shouting fire, fire, and all the
- 2:56Speaker 1: animals in the woods awoke, and they came running with
- 2:59Speaker 1: buckets of water. They wanted to put out the fire.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Little bear was so surprised that he did not look
- 3:07Speaker 1: where he was going, and he ran right into an
- 3:11Speaker 1: old bonfire and burned his dear little paws. All the
- 3:16Speaker 1: Bear family came to help put out the fire. Little
- 3:20Speaker 1: Bear went limping home as he hurried along. The old
- 3:25Speaker 1: owl called, when you want a good name, come to me.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Fire is not a good name to wit. To wit
- 3:35Speaker 1: to who such a name will never do. Little bear
- 3:40Speaker 1: got home at last, and his mother tied up his paws.
- 3:44Speaker 1: She put flower on them. It will help the burn,
- 3:48Speaker 1: said Mamma Bear. Little bear did not like to see
- 3:52Speaker 1: his paws white, so he licked off the flower. I
- 3:56Speaker 1: will find a new name tomorrow, he said, But I
- 4:00Speaker 1: will not ask the owl to help me. Then little
- 4:04Speaker 1: Bear went to sleep. He had a fine dream. He
- 4:09Speaker 1: thought he found the pot of gold at the end
- 4:11Speaker 1: of the rainbow. He thought. He tried to carry the
- 4:14Speaker 1: pot of gold. It is heavy, he shouted. It is
- 4:19Speaker 1: so heavy I cannot carry it. Little Bear shouted so
- 4:24Speaker 1: loud he woke up. All the little bears woke up.
- 4:29Speaker 1: What is the matter, they cried. Little Bear said he
- 4:33Speaker 1: had been dreaming about the pot of gold. Mamma Bear
- 4:37Speaker 1: came in, rubbing her eyes. She was so sleepy. Papa
- 4:42Speaker 1: Bear said, it is too early to get up. Go
- 4:47Speaker 1: to sleep again. They all went back to bed and
- 4:51Speaker 1: fell asleep. Little Bear did not dream this time. End
- 4:58Speaker 1: of Hunting a Name. Chapter two, A Walk in the
- 5:09Speaker 1: Woods of Littlebar by Laura Rontre Smith. This is a

- 5:28Speaker 1: Recording by Caroline Francis. Littlebar by Laura Rontree Smith. A
- 5:37Speaker 1: walk in the woods, Bushytail, the sly old fox said,
- 5:44Speaker 1: if you are my friend, you will go with me,
- 5:47Speaker 1: no doubt to the rainbow end. Little Bear was not
- 5:52Speaker 1: allowed to go out in the woods alone. Next morning,
- 5:56Speaker 1: he said, I want to take a walk in the wood.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Papa Bear said, you may go if Curly Bear will
- 6:05Speaker 1: go with you. Curly Bear was Little Bear's youngest brother.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Curly Bear and little Bear went through the woods together.
- 6:14Speaker 1: They each carried a little bucket. They were going to
- 6:17Speaker 1: pick berries. Are you twins, asked the old owl as
- 6:22Speaker 1: they passed along under the tree. Curly Bear shouted, I
- 6:27Speaker 1: am Curly Bear, but he hasn't any name. Little Bear
- 6:32Speaker 1: put his paw up to his face and cried boo hoo.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Then the most surprising thing happened. Furry the coon came
- 6:42Speaker 1: running down the path, and old Grizzly Bear came running
- 6:46Speaker 1: along carrying his umbrella and all the cottontail family came
- 6:51Speaker 1: running too. Where are you going, asked the two little bears.
- 6:57Speaker 1: None of the animals stopped to answer them, so Little
- 7:01Speaker 1: Bear and Curly Bear threw down their pails and ran too,
- 7:06Speaker 1: on on on through the woods. All the animals ran
- 7:11Speaker 1: until they were tired. It began to rain a little,
- 7:15Speaker 1: first a few drops, then splash, splash, splash. We shall
- 7:20Speaker 1: have wet fur, said Curly Bear. Pretty soon there came
- 7:26Speaker 1: a light in the sky, and there shone a rainbow.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Then all the animals ran on again, faster than ever,
- 7:35Speaker 1: and the rainbow began to fade and fade until it
- 7:38Speaker 1: became ever so faint. Pretty soon the rainbow was gone.
- 7:45Speaker 1: What do you suppose those funny animals did? Then they
- 7:49Speaker 1: sat down in a circle, and each one whispered to
- 7:52Speaker 1: the one next him. Curly Bear said, I wish someone
- 7:57Speaker 1: would speak out loud so we could know what they
- 8:00Speaker 1: are talking about. Just then, Bushytail, the sly fox, got
- 8:06Speaker 1: up and wrapped his tail about him and said, ladies
- 8:10Speaker 1: and gentlemen, the secret is out. We were all looking
- 8:14Speaker 1: for the pot of gold at the rainbow end. Then
- 8:18Speaker 1: all the animals shouted, here hear, hear, bushytail is talking.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Curly Bear and little Bear said they were sleepy and tired.
- 8:29Speaker 1: So Old Grizzly Bear left all the other animals talking,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and he took Curly Bear on his right shoulder and
- 8:37Speaker 1: little Bear on his left shoulder, and went trotting merrily homeward.
- 8:43Speaker 1: What is your name, little bear called the old owl
- 8:46Speaker 1: as they passed by by the way. What is your
- 8:51Speaker 1: real name, asked Old Grizzly. But little Bear only hid
- 8:56Speaker 1: his head on Old Grizzly's shoulder and cried, boo who.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Curly Bear said, he hasn't any name. We did not
- 9:06Speaker 1: have enough names to go round. How many bears are
- 9:11Speaker 1: there at your house, asked Old Grizzly. Curly Bear said,
- 9:16Speaker 1: we have Mama Bear and Papa Bear, and seventeen little bears.
- 9:24Speaker 1: All this time, little Bear was crying softly boo hoo.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Never mind, said Old Grizzly. When you find the pot
- 9:34Speaker 1: of gold, you will find a name too. Then little
- 9:39Speaker 1: Bear stopped crying and fell asleep. He fell asleep on
- 9:44Speaker 1: Old Grizzly's shoulder, and pretty soon he woke up with
- 9:48Speaker 1: a start. All the animals were running down the path.
- 9:53Speaker 1: What is the matter, asked little Bear. Old grizzly chuckled
- 9:59Speaker 1: to himself, and Curly Bear said, bushytail has stolen some cookies.
- 10:06Speaker 1: All the animals were after bushytail, but they did not
- 10:10Speaker 1: catch him. He was such a sly old fox. What
- 10:14Speaker 1: do you suppose bushytail did? He hid behind a stone wall,
- 10:20Speaker 1: and all the animals ran past. Bushytail had plenty of
- 10:25Speaker 1: cookies to eat that night. End of a Walk in
- 10:31Speaker 1: the Woods, Chapter three, A kitchew of Little Bear by

- 11:02Speaker 1: Little Bear by Laura Rontree Smith. A kitchen ding dong,
- 11:09Speaker 1: ding dong loudly rings the bell. Old grizzly Bear is
- 11:13Speaker 1: in the woods and he has much to tell. A
- 11:18Speaker 1: kitchen cried Old grizzly Bear. A kitchen cried all the
- 11:24Speaker 1: little bears. A kitch you cried all the animals in
- 11:29Speaker 1: the wood. Now, what do you suppose was the matter?
- 11:34Speaker 1: They had all been out in the rain and had
- 11:36Speaker 1: taken cold. My how those animals did sneeze Old Grizzly
- 11:43Speaker 1: went out into the woods and rang a great bell.
- 11:47Speaker 1: He rang the bell because he wanted to call all
- 11:50Speaker 1: the animals together. Pretty soon the animals came along, sniffing
- 11:55Speaker 1: and sneezing and wiping their eyes. Old Grizzly said, when
- 12:01Speaker 1: we look for the rainbow end, we all catch cold,
- 12:04Speaker 1: so we must stop looking at once. He wants the
- 12:08Speaker 1: gold himself, said Bushytail. He wants the gold himself. Old
- 12:14Speaker 1: Grisly said, if there had been a pot of gold
- 12:18Speaker 1: at the rainbow End, it would have been found long ago.
- 12:22Speaker 1: And why should we get wet looking for it. We
- 12:26Speaker 1: will put it to a vote, shouted Bushytail. Put it
- 12:29Speaker 1: to a vote. So they all voted, and all the
- 12:34Speaker 1: animals except Bushytail agreed that they would rather stay at home.
- 12:38Speaker 1: When it rained. Little Bear did not say anything, and
- 12:44Speaker 1: Bushytail whispered to him, we will keep on looking for
- 12:47Speaker 1: the pot of gold little bear. Little Bear felt very sad.
- 12:53Speaker 1: He went home with Curly Bear, and he said, if
- 12:57Speaker 1: I don't find a name pretty soon, I shall I'll
- 13:00Speaker 1: grow up and still be called little Bear. Curly Bear
- 13:05Speaker 1: kissed him on both cheeks and said, I will love
- 13:08Speaker 1: you just the same. The old owl called after them,
- 13:13Speaker 1: Little Bear, you can find plenty of names, but you
- 13:17Speaker 1: cannot be sure which is your name. Little Bear cried
- 13:22Speaker 1: Boo Who. Just then Susan Cottontail came along. Susan Cottontail
- 13:30Speaker 1: was an old grandmother rabbit, and all the animals loved her.
- 13:35Speaker 1: You must not cry so much, she said, Why not,
- 13:40Speaker 1: asked little Bear. Susan Cottontail said, I have a great
- 13:45Speaker 1: grandchild who cried so much. They named her little boo Who.
- 13:50Speaker 1: She would cry about everything. Nothing seemed to please her.
- 13:55Speaker 1: When it rained, she would cry because she couldn't go
- 13:57Speaker 1: out and play. When it was fine weather, she would
- 14:01Speaker 1: cry because nobody came to play with her. She could
- 14:04Speaker 1: not be pleased. You should take things as they are
- 14:09Speaker 1: and be happy, my little bear. Little Bear laughed then
- 14:13Speaker 1: and said, may I go home with you Susan. Susan
- 14:18Speaker 1: said yes, if you will carry my market basket. Little
- 14:23Speaker 1: Bear took the basket and they went merrily down the road.
- 14:27Speaker 1: At last they came to Susan Cottontail's home. They saw
- 14:31Speaker 1: a light in the window, and Susan said, Bunny Cottontail
- 14:35Speaker 1: is sitting up late to read. Do you like to read?
- 14:39Speaker 1: Little Bear. Little Bear said yes, and they went inside.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Bunny Cottontail was sitting up in bed reading. Whom have
- 14:50Speaker 1: we here? He asked. Little Bear made a bow. What
- 14:55Speaker 1: is your name? Asked Bunny Cottontail. We are glad you
- 14:58Speaker 1: came Susan. Cottontail frowned at Bunny and filled little Bear's
- 15:04Speaker 1: mouth with candy so he could not cry. Then Susan
- 15:08Speaker 1: whispered something to Bunny, and he shook his head. I
- 15:12Speaker 1: like candy, said little Bear, and so does Bushytail. Bushytail
- 15:19Speaker 1: likes cookies too, said Susan. He takes them without asking.
- 15:25Speaker 1: I have not seen Bushytail for a long time, said Bunny.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Susan laughed. She said perhaps he will call tomorrow. Bunny
- 15:36Speaker 1: Cottontail said, my fur and whiskers, where is my little
- 15:41Speaker 1: red box? Susan looked, but she could not find the
- 15:45Speaker 1: little red box. Bunny looked all over the house, and
- 15:49Speaker 1: little Bear was as good as he could be. He
- 15:53Speaker 1: never once said what is in the little red box? Ha, ha,
- 15:58Speaker 1: cried Bunny. At last, here it is. He opened the
- 16:02Speaker 1: box and took out three chocolate candies. The candies looked
- 16:07Speaker 1: like cigars. Have a smoke, Susan, have a smoke, little Bear,
- 16:12Speaker 1: he cried. They all took the candy cigars and ate them.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Little Bear was so happy he laughed until he cried.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I am glad, I am here, said little Bear. I
- 16:25Speaker 1: like this home. I like candy, and I like both
- 16:30Speaker 1: of you. I shall come to visit you often. Grandma
- 16:35Speaker 1: Susan Cottontail is sad as sad can be. She has
- 16:39Speaker 1: lost her glasses, and so she cannot see and of
- 16:47Speaker 1: a kitchen. Chapter four, Making Cookies of Little Bear by

- 17:17Speaker 1: Little Bear by Laura Rontre Smith Making Cookies. Oh oh oh,
- 17:26Speaker 1: cried Susan Cottontail. I have lost my glasses again. Susan
- 17:32Speaker 1: Cottontail was always losing her glasses. Bunny and Little Bear
- 17:37Speaker 1: looked all over the house. They looked upstairs, and they
- 17:40Speaker 1: looked downstairs, but they could not find Susan's glasses. Susan
- 17:46Speaker 1: Cottontail could not see a thing without her glasses, so
- 17:50Speaker 1: she sat down in a chair by the fire. Bunny
- 17:54Speaker 1: Cottontail had to get breakfast that morning, and little Bear
- 17:58Speaker 1: helped him. Bear went back and forth and called Susan
- 18:03Speaker 1: where is the sugar? And Susan, where is the salt.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Just as they sat down at the table, someone knocked
- 18:12Speaker 1: at the door. Little Bear opened the door. There stood Bushytail.
- 18:17Speaker 1: He said, I want to come in. I must come in.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I will come in. I do not mean mischief this time.
- 18:26Speaker 1: With that, Bushytail came bounding into the room. He helped
- 18:31Speaker 1: himself to a plate of cookies and began to eat
- 18:34Speaker 1: very fast. Ha ha, he said, how I do like cookies.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Bunny Cottontail was busy feeding Susan because she could not
- 18:44Speaker 1: see to eat without her glasses. Pretty soon Bunny laid
- 18:49Speaker 1: down the spoon and said, Bushytail, what do you want
- 18:53Speaker 1: this morning? Bushytail stopped eating cookies. Then he pulled out
- 18:58Speaker 1: a roll of paper from his pocket and read. Resolved
- 19:03Speaker 1: that all the animals in the woods will help to
- 19:05Speaker 1: start a newspaper. Resolved that Bushytail shall edit the same
- 19:12Speaker 1: hear hear cried Susan, we are going to have a newspaper. Now,
- 19:17Speaker 1: said Bushytail. We must all advertise in the newspaper, for
- 19:22Speaker 1: it pays to advertise. Bunny Cottontail winked and said, we
- 19:27Speaker 1: might advertise for Susan's glasses. Susan Cottontail laughed and said
- 19:32Speaker 1: in a whisper, we might advertise for a name for
- 19:36Speaker 1: little Bear. Susan whispered so loud that little Bear heard,
- 19:42Speaker 1: and he was so pleased with the idea of getting
- 19:45Speaker 1: a name that he danced up and down and shouted,
- 19:48Speaker 1: we will all advertise in the paper, bushytail. Hurrah, cried Bushytail.
- 19:54Speaker 1: We surely shall find a name for little Bear. Susan
- 19:59Speaker 1: Cottontail said she hoped her glasses would be found some day,
- 20:03Speaker 1: and she passed Bushytail the cookies again. Bushytail said he
- 20:07Speaker 1: must go and talk to the other animals about the newspaper.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Bunny Cottontail said, be sure to bring us a copy
- 20:15Speaker 1: of the paper. Bushytail. Little bear ran half way down
- 20:19Speaker 1: the walk with Bushytail and said, be sure to find
- 20:23Speaker 1: me a name. Be sure to find me a name.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Bushytail went off, laughing a short, foxy little laugh. I
- 20:31Speaker 1: wonder what Bushytail was laughing about. You might put your
- 20:36Speaker 1: receipt for cookies in the paper, said Bunny cottontail. Little
- 20:41Speaker 1: Bear said, can you make cookies? Grandmother? Can I make cookies?
- 20:47Speaker 1: Said Susan cottontail. Well, if you will find my glasses,
- 20:51Speaker 1: we shall see. Then they all looked again, but they
- 20:56Speaker 1: could not find Susan's glasses. Let me make the cookies
- 21:01Speaker 1: this time, said Bunny cottontail. They gave Susan a chair
- 21:06Speaker 1: in the kitchen, and Bunny got a bowl and a spoon,
- 21:09Speaker 1: and little Bear helped to stir the cookies. Put in
- 21:13Speaker 1: plenty of cinnamon, said Susan, and Bunny put in the cinnamon.
- 21:19Speaker 1: A kitchen, cried Susan. A kitchen, cried Bunny. A kitchen
- 21:26Speaker 1: cried little Bear. Do close the door, cried Susan. We
- 21:31Speaker 1: are all taking cold. How about sugar, asked Bunny. Put
- 21:36Speaker 1: in plenty of sugar, said Susan. Soon the cookies were
- 21:41Speaker 1: all baked. Can I not make cookies? Cried Bunny proudly.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Just then the most surprising thing happened. Susan took a
- 21:51Speaker 1: bite of a cookie, and she began to laugh and sneeze.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Bunny took a bite of a cookie, and he began
- 21:59Speaker 1: to cough and choke. Little Bear took a bite of
- 22:04Speaker 1: a cookie, and he cried, oh Ma, I want my ma.
- 22:09Speaker 1: We put in pepper instead of cinnamon, cried Bunny. Don't
- 22:15Speaker 1: tell Bushytail, said Susan. He would laugh at the mistake.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Then they all laughed. They thought it was a great
- 22:23Speaker 1: joke for Bunny to put pepper in the cookies. End
- 22:28Speaker 1: of Making Cookies, Chapter five, The Newspaper of Little Bear

- 22:54Speaker 1: Caroline Francis. Little Bear by Laura Rontree Smith. The newspaper.
- 23:07Speaker 1: The small bears at the table cried, we are sad.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Boo hoo, said Papa Bear. Cheer up my DearS, for
- 23:14Speaker 1: this will never do. Mamma and Papa Bear and sixteen
- 23:19Speaker 1: little bears sat down to supper. Boo hoo said the
- 23:24Speaker 1: first little bear. Boo hoo said the second little bear.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Now will you believe it? In two minutes, all the
- 23:32Speaker 1: bears were crying. Hush hush, said Papa Bear. What do
- 23:37Speaker 1: you suppose Mama Bear did? She got out sixteen little
- 23:42Speaker 1: pocket handkerchiefs and told the little bears to dry their eyes.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Papa Bear turned to the first little bear and said,
- 23:50Speaker 1: what were you crying about? Then the little bear began
- 23:54Speaker 1: to cry again. Boo oo. He said, I don't remember
- 24:00Speaker 1: what I was crying about. Then the second little bear said,
- 24:05Speaker 1: I remember what we were crying about. We were crying
- 24:09Speaker 1: because we miss little Bear. Then every one of those
- 24:15Speaker 1: little bears shouted, we miss little Bear. We want him
- 24:19Speaker 1: to come home. Just at that minute, there was a
- 24:24Speaker 1: loud knock at the door an in bounded Bushytail. Bushytail
- 24:30Speaker 1: had the newspaper with him, and he felt very proud.
- 24:34Speaker 1: You have to pay me one dollar a copy, he said.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Papa Bear was so pleased to see the paper that
- 24:42Speaker 1: he paid Bushytail the dollar without saying a word, and
- 24:47Speaker 1: then he sat down in his big arm chair and
- 24:50Speaker 1: began to read read the advertisements, roared Bushytail. Then Papa
- 24:57Speaker 1: Bear read lost a pair of mittens, Finder returned to Bushytail,
- 25:05Speaker 1: lost a pair of glasses, Finder returned to Susan Cottontail.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Then what do you suppose those sixteen little bears did.
- 25:16Speaker 1: They clapped their paws together and laughed and cried and
- 25:20Speaker 1: shouted all together oh dear, oh dear, how funny Susan
- 25:26Speaker 1: Cottontail has lost her glasses again, five dollars reward, read
- 25:31Speaker 1: Papa Bear. The first little bear shouted, I want to
- 25:36Speaker 1: find the glasses, and the second little bear shouted, no,
- 25:40Speaker 1: I want to find them, and all of them made
- 25:44Speaker 1: a dreadful noise. Then Bushytail roared. Read the next page.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Papa Bear read, wanted a name for a fine little bear.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Apply at the house of Susan Cottontail. Oh oh, oh,
- 26:02Speaker 1: cried all the little bears. We know now where little
- 26:06Speaker 1: bear is. Mamma Bear wiped her eyes, and Papa Bear
- 26:11Speaker 1: laughed until he cried. The little bears all capered about
- 26:15Speaker 1: the room. Then they put on their little caps and
- 26:18Speaker 1: went by twos down the road. They said, we will
- 26:23Speaker 1: find little bear. We will bring him home. The first
- 26:27Speaker 1: little bear said, I will find little bear. The second
- 26:31Speaker 1: little bear said I will find little bear. Then all
- 26:36Speaker 1: the bears shouted, we will all find little bear. And
- 26:40Speaker 1: they went down the road, shouting and singing all the way.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Bushy Tail was a very rude fellow, A very rude fellow. Indeed,
- 26:53Speaker 1: he snatched the newspaper away from Papa Bear and jumped
- 26:57Speaker 1: out of the window. Give me back my dollar, roared
- 27:01Speaker 1: Papa Bear. We have only one paper, Bushytail shouted back,
- 27:08Speaker 1: you pay one dollar to read it. Give me back
- 27:12Speaker 1: my dollar, roared Papa Bear again. But Bushytail was far
- 27:17Speaker 1: down the road by this time and did not turn
- 27:20Speaker 1: his head. Mama Bear said, he is a sly old fellow,
- 27:26Speaker 1: but I am glad to know about little Bear. Papa
- 27:30Speaker 1: Bear nodded. I want my dollar back, he said. As
- 27:36Speaker 1: Bushytail passed Bunny's house, he stopped and said, give me
- 27:40Speaker 1: a cookie. I must have a cookie. I cannot wait.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Susan said, I have a whole panful, but they are
- 27:50Speaker 1: not fit to eat this time. I can eat them all,
- 27:54Speaker 1: cried Bushytail, so saying, Bushytail snatched the pan of cookies
- 28:00Speaker 1: out of Susan's paw and ran down the road as
- 28:03Speaker 1: fast as he could. When Bushytail got a good bite
- 28:07Speaker 1: of the first cookie, he choked, and he coughed and
- 28:12Speaker 1: growled and ran until he found a stream, and he
- 28:16Speaker 1: drank a lot of water. Too much pepper that time,
- 28:22Speaker 1: he said, I don't believe he will want any more cookies,
- 28:28Speaker 1: said Bunny Cottontail. Susan shook her head. He will have
- 28:34Speaker 1: forgotten by tomorrow, she said. End of the newspaper, Chapter six.

- 29:12Speaker 1: by Laura Rontree Smith The Silver Dollar. At exactly three o'clock,
- 29:22Speaker 1: the furry people came, Grizzly Bear and Bushytail and others
- 29:27Speaker 1: I could name. Little Bear woke up early next morning
- 29:31Speaker 1: and went downstairs. Why do you suppose he got up
- 29:35Speaker 1: so early? He thought that he would look for Susan
- 29:38Speaker 1: Cottontail's glasses. Littlbar looked all over the house for the glasses.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Susan Cottontail got up and called, who is downstairs in
- 29:49Speaker 1: my house? Patter, patter, patter went Little Bear's feet. He
- 29:55Speaker 1: came to the foot of the stairs, and then he
- 29:58Speaker 1: set up a shout. What do you suppose made Little
- 30:01Speaker 1: Bear shout? There stood Susan Cottontail with her glasses pushed
- 30:08Speaker 1: up on her nightcap. Little Bear crept upstairs and pulled
- 30:15Speaker 1: Susan's glasses over her eyes and kissed her. Susan was
- 30:20Speaker 1: so pleased to be able to see again that she said,
- 30:25Speaker 1: you are really a very handsome little bear. It is
- 30:29Speaker 1: a pity you haven't any name. Bunny Cottontail gave little
- 30:34Speaker 1: Bear a hug, and they all made mary. Because Susan
- 30:37Speaker 1: Cottontail's glasses were found, Bunny Cottontail made a big sign.
- 30:43Speaker 1: He wrote these words on the sign, wanted a name
- 30:48Speaker 1: for little Bear. Bunny tacked the sign up on the
- 30:52Speaker 1: outside of the house. What did you do that for,
- 30:57Speaker 1: asked Susan. The animals will read about it in the paper.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Bunny did not answer, how could he, for his mouth
- 31:05Speaker 1: was full of tacks. At exactly three o'clock in the afternoon,
- 31:11Speaker 1: a great procession of animals began to come, and all
- 31:15Speaker 1: of them brought names for little Bear. There were so
- 31:20Speaker 1: many animals that the house was full, and the yard
- 31:25Speaker 1: was full, and still more animals came. The old owl
- 31:31Speaker 1: sat up in a tree, and the animals began to
- 31:35Speaker 1: shout names, one after the other, Adolphus, Henry, James, Marcus, Augustus,
- 31:46Speaker 1: and so they went on all afternoon. When it was sundown,
- 31:53Speaker 1: the old owl got ready to speak. The old owl
- 31:58Speaker 1: was very wise. He said, my dear friends, we can
- 32:04Speaker 1: find a great many names, but how can we be
- 32:08Speaker 1: sure any one of them belongs to Little Bear. Then
- 32:15Speaker 1: little Bear set up a great cry, and Bunny Cottontail
- 32:19Speaker 1: began to feed him a banana, and Susan Cottontail gave
- 32:23Speaker 1: him a cooky, but still he cried. Just then, sixteen
- 32:29Speaker 1: little bears came down the road two and two, and
- 32:33Speaker 1: little Bear was so happy to see them that he
- 32:36Speaker 1: forgot he didn't have any name, and he shouted good
- 32:40Speaker 1: bye Bunny, good bye Susan. Then he ran down the
- 32:45Speaker 1: road as fast as his little legs could carry him.
- 32:49Speaker 1: The sixteen little bears kissed him and hugged him, and
- 32:53Speaker 1: the eldest brother Bear carried him part way home. They
- 32:58Speaker 1: met Bushytail. As they went along. He swished his tail
- 33:02Speaker 1: in a very proud way and said, dollars don't grow
- 33:07Speaker 1: on bushes, but Papa Bear has plenty of dollars to spare.
- 33:12Speaker 1: All the little bears turned and chased Bushytail, but he
- 33:16Speaker 1: was a sly old fox. He was too quick for them,
- 33:21Speaker 1: and he soon disappeared in the woods. Little Bear suddenly
- 33:26Speaker 1: gave a shout Then all the bears began to shout.
- 33:31Speaker 1: There in the road was something round and shining. Little
- 33:36Speaker 1: Bear picked it up. It was the silver dollar that
- 33:40Speaker 1: Papa Bear had given Bushytail for the newspaper. Give it
- 33:45Speaker 1: to me, said the first little bear. Give it to me,
- 33:50Speaker 1: said the second little bear. Then each of the little
- 33:53Speaker 1: bears shouted, I want the dollar. I want the dollar.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Little bear walked very fast. He held the silver dollar
- 34:03Speaker 1: very tightly in his paw. He was afraid he might
- 34:06Speaker 1: lose it. Little Bear said, I will give the dollar
- 34:11Speaker 1: back to Papa Bear. I wish I had found it,
- 34:16Speaker 1: said the first little bear. I wish I had found it,
- 34:21Speaker 1: said the second little bear. Curly Bear said, little Bear
- 34:26Speaker 1: is right, he must give the dollar back to Papa Bear.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Little Bear kissed Curly Bear, and they went on home.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Pater Patter fell the rein. The little bears were cold,
- 34:41Speaker 1: but they bravely dug away to find the pot of gold.

- 35:22Speaker 1: Smith Red Riding Hood. Mama Bear was so glad to
- 35:30Speaker 1: see Little Bear again that she gave him a great hug.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Then Little Bear handed Papa Bear the silver dollar. Papa
- 35:39Speaker 1: Bear was so pleased, he said, you may have a party.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Then all the bears clapped their paws and danced up
- 35:49Speaker 1: and down. Just then there came a great peal of thunder,
- 35:54Speaker 1: and another and another. Then all the little bears began
- 36:00Speaker 1: to howl. Oh, oh, oh oh, we are afraid of thunder,
- 36:09Speaker 1: We are afraid of lightning. Mama Bear said, off to bed,
- 36:14Speaker 1: every one of you. Little Bear jumped up into Mama
- 36:18Speaker 1: Bear's lap, and the other bears all went to bed.
- 36:23Speaker 1: The bears looked so cunning in their little beds. Pretty
- 36:28Speaker 1: soon the storm was over, and there came a beautiful
- 36:32Speaker 1: rainbow in the sky. See the rainbow, whispered little Bear.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Do you suppose we could find the pot of gold?
- 36:43Speaker 1: Then Mama Bear and Papa Bear and Little Bear all
- 36:48Speaker 1: went into the yard. One end of the rainbow seemed
- 36:52Speaker 1: to come near their garden. Now, what do you suppose
- 36:57Speaker 1: those funny bears did. They all began to dig. They
- 37:02Speaker 1: were looking for the pot of gold at the end
- 37:05Speaker 1: of the rainbow. Soon the other little bears woke up,
- 37:11Speaker 1: and they all came out to see what was the matter.
- 37:15Speaker 1: They had sixteen little shovels, and they all began to
- 37:19Speaker 1: dig as fast as they could. Pretty soon they had
- 37:24Speaker 1: the whole garden bed spaded up. Then it began to rain, patter, patder, patter,
- 37:31Speaker 1: and splash, splash, splash. The bears all ran for the house. My,
- 37:38Speaker 1: but they were wet. Papa Bear built a great fire,
- 37:44Speaker 1: and Mama Bear came with a big towel, and they
- 37:48Speaker 1: took turns rubbing off one another's wet fur. Just then
- 37:54Speaker 1: a great crash was heard. Oh oh, oh, oh oh,
- 38:00Speaker 1: cried all the little bears. We are afraid of thunder,
- 38:04Speaker 1: we are afraid of lightning. Do be still, cried Mama Bear.
- 38:10Speaker 1: We must go and see what is the matter. What
- 38:14Speaker 1: do you suppose was the matter? Bushytail had jumped through
- 38:19Speaker 1: the front parlor window, and there was broken glass all
- 38:24Speaker 1: over the floor. Who is going to pay for this window,
- 38:30Speaker 1: cried Papa Bear. Bushytail did not answer. I want my
- 38:35Speaker 1: dollar back, he roared, I want my dollar back. Bushytail
- 38:40Speaker 1: lashed his tail in a terrible way. The little bears
- 38:44Speaker 1: were so afraid that they crept under the sofa and hid.
- 38:50Speaker 1: I don't know what would have happened. I am sure
- 38:54Speaker 1: if someone had not knocked at the door. Just then
- 38:59Speaker 1: Papa Bear opened the door. There stood Little Red riding Hood.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Little Red riding Hood wore a red cap and a
- 39:10Speaker 1: red cape, and she carried a basket on her arm.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Good Bye, I'll call again, shouted Bushytail, and bounded through
- 39:20Speaker 1: the window and was off and away. Bushytail was always
- 39:24Speaker 1: very shy with strangers. Little Red riding Hood said, I
- 39:31Speaker 1: will give you my basket of cookies if I may
- 39:34Speaker 1: stay with you all night. Little Red riding Hood had
- 39:38Speaker 1: lost her way. The little bears came out from under
- 39:42Speaker 1: the sofa one by one, and Little Bear was last
- 39:47Speaker 1: of all to come out. I have seen you before,
- 39:52Speaker 1: said Little Red riding Hood. What is your name? Little bear?
- 39:57Speaker 1: Then Little Bear began to cry so hot that the
- 40:01Speaker 1: others offered him some cookies. But he cried still harder,
- 40:06Speaker 1: and they were afraid he would never stop. Little Red
- 40:10Speaker 1: riding Hood whispered something to him, and then he stopped crying.
- 40:16Speaker 1: I wonder what little Red riding Hood said. Little Bear
- 40:22Speaker 1: let little red Riding Hood sleep in his bed. He
- 40:26Speaker 1: curled up on a rug on the floor. Little Bear
- 40:30Speaker 1: liked to sleep on the rug. The rug was close
- 40:33Speaker 1: to the fire. Red Riding Hood said, are you going
- 40:38Speaker 1: to sleep, little bear? Little Bear said, I'm going to
- 40:44Speaker 1: roast some apples first. So little Bear sat before the
- 40:48Speaker 1: fire roasting apples. He ate one apple and gave one
- 40:53Speaker 1: to Red riding Hood. Red Riding Hood said, you are
- 40:57Speaker 1: a very nice little bear. Thank you for the apple.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Little Bear roasted another apple. Then he went into the hall.
- 41:07Speaker 1: His soft little feet went pitter patter in the hall.
- 41:12Speaker 1: His soft little voice called, Curly Bear, come and get
- 41:16Speaker 1: your apple. Curly Bear came down, rubbing his eyes. Be quiet,
- 41:23Speaker 1: said little Bear, don't wake the rest. I cannot sit
- 41:27Speaker 1: up all night roasting apples. I must darn my stockings.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Curly Bear sat on the stairs and ate his apple.
- 41:37Speaker 1: Then he went back to bed. End of Red Riding

- 42:18Speaker 1: a story. Many fairies I have heard are dwelling in
- 42:23Speaker 1: the wood, but I am sure none is so fair
- 42:28Speaker 1: as Little Red riding Hood. The next day it rained
- 42:34Speaker 1: and rained. Mamma Bear said no one shall go out,
- 42:39Speaker 1: so they all brought their chairs and sat by the fire.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Please tell us a story, shouted all the small bears.
- 42:50Speaker 1: Red riding Hood began. I go out in the woods
- 42:54Speaker 1: every day, and I have never been afraid in my life,
- 42:58Speaker 1: except once. That was when you went to visit your grandmother,
- 43:04Speaker 1: said Curly Bear. Red riding Hood went on. I tapped
- 43:09Speaker 1: on the door, and the old wolf said, come in
- 43:14Speaker 1: you said grandmother, What great ears you have, shouted all
- 43:19Speaker 1: the bears, and grandmother, what great eyes you have, whispered
- 43:25Speaker 1: little Bear. I have almost forgotten about it, said Red
- 43:30Speaker 1: riding Hood. It happened so long ago. What became of
- 43:36Speaker 1: the wolf? Asked Papa Bear. The wood choppers frightened him away,
- 43:42Speaker 1: said Red riding Hood. How is it you do not
- 43:46Speaker 1: grow old? Asked Mamma Bear. Little Red riding Hood blushed
- 43:52Speaker 1: rosy red. She was such a sweet little girl. She
- 43:56Speaker 1: looked very young in her short dress. I should think
- 44:01Speaker 1: you would be afraid of the woods, said Papa Bear.
- 44:06Speaker 1: There is bushy tail. He is such a sly fellow.
- 44:11Speaker 1: Red riding Hood laughed. She said, none of the animals
- 44:15Speaker 1: dares to harm me. I want a cookie, said one
- 44:19Speaker 1: little bear. I want a cookie, said the next little bear.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Red riding Hood went to get her basket of cookies.
- 44:29Speaker 1: The bears all followed her, and they set up a
- 44:32Speaker 1: great howl. What do you suppose had happened? The basket
- 44:38Speaker 1: was empty? Who stole the cookies? Asked Mamma Bear? And
- 44:44Speaker 1: who stole the cookies asked Papa Bear. Oh oh, oh,
- 44:50Speaker 1: cried all the little bears. We want some cookies, We
- 44:54Speaker 1: want some cookies. Red riding Hood began to sing a
- 44:59Speaker 1: little song. Who is it? Once went into the wood,
- 45:03Speaker 1: Little Red riding Hood, who carried with her the nicest food,
- 45:09Speaker 1: Little Red riding Hood, who gathered flowers fresh and sweet,
- 45:14Speaker 1: Who did not fear the wolf to meet, who roamed
- 45:17Speaker 1: out in the green retreat, Little Red riding Hood. While
- 45:22Speaker 1: Red riding Hood was singing, she was mixing flour and
- 45:26Speaker 1: butter and milk and other good things. Together, she was
- 45:30Speaker 1: making more cookies for the little bears. May I roll
- 45:35Speaker 1: them out? Asked each of the seventeen little bears. Red
- 45:40Speaker 1: Riding Hood had forgotten that little Bear had no name.
- 45:43Speaker 1: She looked at him and said, what is your name?
- 45:47Speaker 1: Two big tears began to roll down his cheeks, and
- 45:52Speaker 1: his brothers and sisters shouted, he hasn't any name, He
- 45:56Speaker 1: hasn't any name. Then Little Riding Hood whisked every one
- 46:02Speaker 1: of those bears out of the kitchen except little Bear,
- 46:06Speaker 1: and he helped roll out the cookies. Little Bear was
- 46:11Speaker 1: so happy then that he stopped crying, and he and
- 46:16Speaker 1: Red Riding Hood rolled out and baked one hundred cookies
- 46:20Speaker 1: that day. Little Bear told Red Riding Hood that he
- 46:24Speaker 1: hoped some day to find the pot of gold at
- 46:27Speaker 1: the rainbow End. What would you do with the gold,
- 46:32Speaker 1: asked little red Riding Hood. I don't want the gold,
- 46:36Speaker 1: said little Bear, but I might find a name in
- 46:39Speaker 1: the pot of gold. Red Riding Hood did not talk
- 46:43Speaker 1: any more. She went on singing. I wonder if I
- 46:48Speaker 1: could learn to sing, said little Bear. He tried to sing,
- 46:53Speaker 1: but his voice sounded like a growl. Never mind, said
- 46:58Speaker 1: Red Riding hood. If you can cannot sing, you can
- 47:01Speaker 1: roll out cookies. All the bears said the cookies were fine,
- 47:07Speaker 1: and Papa Bear said, I am glad Bushytail is not here.
- 47:12Speaker 1: We have enough cookies to last a while. I am
- 47:16Speaker 1: not sure that they will last, said Mama Bear. Then
- 47:21Speaker 1: each little bear took another cookie, and they all laughed.

- 48:04Speaker 1: Aladdin's Lamp said Mama Bear, tis time for bed. That
- 48:10Speaker 1: is very clear. Scamper off as good bear should. A
- 48:15Speaker 1: story you shall hear. It's time to go to bed,
- 48:21Speaker 1: said Mama Bear. I am afraid to go up in
- 48:24Speaker 1: the dark, said the first little bear. I am not
- 48:28Speaker 1: a bit sleepy, said the second little bear. Please let
- 48:33Speaker 1: me stay up a little while, said the third little bear.
- 48:38Speaker 1: We are all afraid of the dark, said the fourth
- 48:42Speaker 1: little bear. In a whisper red riding hood said, if
- 48:48Speaker 1: you are all in bed. In five minutes, I will
- 48:52Speaker 1: come up and tell you a story. Then the first
- 48:56Speaker 1: little bear ran up the stairs as fast as his
- 48:59Speaker 1: fat little lay could carry him. The second little bear cried,
- 49:03Speaker 1: good night Pa, good night Ma, and all the little
- 49:07Speaker 1: bears ran upstairs and got into bed as fast as
- 49:11Speaker 1: they could. Red Riding Hood did not go upstairs for
- 49:16Speaker 1: a few minutes. She was looking for her storybook. The
- 49:21Speaker 1: first little bear cried, O, MA, may I have a
- 49:25Speaker 1: drink of water? The second little bear cried, O, MA,
- 49:31Speaker 1: please come and open the window. Then Papa Bear called, hush,
- 49:36Speaker 1: be still, Red Riding Hood is coming up. Little bear
- 49:42Speaker 1: was so sleepy he fell asleep. Curly Bear woke him up.
- 49:47Speaker 1: Little bear said, did they find the pot of gold?
- 49:52Speaker 1: He had been dreaming again. Pretty soon Red Riding Hood
- 49:58Speaker 1: came upstairs. She said. He said, I cannot find my
- 50:02Speaker 1: story book, but I will tell you a story. What
- 50:07Speaker 1: is the story about, shouted all the little bears. Red
- 50:12Speaker 1: Riding Hood said, it is the story of Aladdin and
- 50:17Speaker 1: the wonderful Lamp. This is the story Red riding Hood
- 50:22Speaker 1: told the little bears. Aladdin was a poor boy. One
- 50:29Speaker 1: day he met a stranger. The stranger told him to
- 50:33Speaker 1: build a fire for him. Aladdin built a fire and
- 50:37Speaker 1: watched it burn. When the fire died out, he saw
- 50:42Speaker 1: a stone and a ring. The stranger said, lift the
- 50:47Speaker 1: stone and go under the ground and get a lamp
- 50:51Speaker 1: for me. Aladdin lifted the stone and went under the ground.
- 50:56Speaker 1: He was in a beautiful place. He saw bright lights
- 51:01Speaker 1: and many jewels about him. He put jewels in his
- 51:05Speaker 1: pockets and in his cap. He soon found the lamp.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Aladdin called to the stranger, help me up, please. The
- 51:15Speaker 1: stranger said, I will not let you up until you
- 51:18Speaker 1: give me the lamp. Aladdin said, I want to keep
- 51:23Speaker 1: the lamp myself. The stranger put the stone back in place,
- 51:28Speaker 1: and Aladdin could not get out. Aladdin did not know
- 51:34Speaker 1: what to do. He wrung his hands and rubbed the
- 51:37Speaker 1: ring which he had put on his finger. As soon
- 51:42Speaker 1: as he rubbed the ring, a fairy appeared. The fairy said,
- 51:48Speaker 1: you may have one wish. Aladdin said, I want to
- 51:53Speaker 1: go home. The fairy took Aladdin home, and Aladdin so
- 52:00Speaker 1: UoN found that whenever he wanted anything, all he had
- 52:04Speaker 1: to do was rub the ring or the lamp, and
- 52:08Speaker 1: the fairy would come. Whenever Aladdin wanted anything, he called
- 52:13Speaker 1: the fairy. He grew very rich. Of course, he married
- 52:18Speaker 1: a princess and lived in a palace. One day the
- 52:22Speaker 1: stranger heard about Aladdin. The stranger still wanted the lamp.
- 52:29Speaker 1: One day Aladdin went away from home. The stranger bought
- 52:34Speaker 1: some new lamps. Then he went about the streets, calling,
- 52:39Speaker 1: I give new lamps for old ones. I give new
- 52:42Speaker 1: lamps for old ones. He came to the palace where
- 52:46Speaker 1: Aladdin lived. He traded a new lamp for Aladdin's wonderful lamp.
- 52:53Speaker 1: The stranger rubbed the lamp and wished that Aladdin's palace
- 52:57Speaker 1: were in Africa. Aladdin came home, his palace was gone.
- 53:05Speaker 1: He rubbed his ring and was taken to his palace.
- 53:10Speaker 1: He rubbed the ring again and wished for the lamp.
- 53:14Speaker 1: He lived happily ever after. Tell it again, said the
- 53:20Speaker 1: first little bear. Where is the lamp? Now? Asked the
- 53:25Speaker 1: second little bear? Where is the magic ring? Asked curly bear.
- 53:31Speaker 1: Little bear did not say a word. He had fallen
- 53:35Speaker 1: asleep again. You must all go to sleep, said red
- 53:41Speaker 1: riding Hood. Then all the seventeen little bears fell asleep.
- 53:47Speaker 1: Curly Bear dreamed about Aladdin and his wonderful lamp. Papa
- 53:54Speaker 1: Bear and Mama Bear both dressed up in disguise, and
- 53:59Speaker 1: then they gave the little bears of very nice surprise.

- 54:34Speaker 1: Recording by Carolyn Francis. Little Bear by Laura Rontre Smith,
- 54:41Speaker 1: The Two Pedlars. Next morning, Mama Bear said, I must
- 54:48Speaker 1: go to town to buy a new sunbonnet. Sure enough,
- 54:53Speaker 1: the sunbonnet that Mama Bear wore was old and faded.
- 54:58Speaker 1: May I go, say the first little Bear. May I go,
- 55:03Speaker 1: said the second little Bear. Then all the little bears
- 55:07Speaker 1: danced up and down and cried, may I go, May
- 55:10Speaker 1: I go. Mamma Bear boxed their ears right and left,
- 55:15Speaker 1: and Papa Bear said, it is really dreadful for you
- 55:19Speaker 1: all to talk at once. I will go with Mamma
- 55:23Speaker 1: Bear to select her new bonnet. Red Riding Hood said
- 55:27Speaker 1: she would keep house and see that the little bear
- 55:30Speaker 1: stayed in until Papa and Mamma Bear came home. Mamma
- 55:35Speaker 1: and Papa Bear went down the road quite happy, and
- 55:39Speaker 1: the little bears begged Red Riding Hood to tell them
- 55:42Speaker 1: a story. So Red Riding Hood began. Once there was
- 55:48Speaker 1: a little bear, and he took a little broom and
- 55:51Speaker 1: swept the floor. Then Red Riding Hood handed the first
- 55:56Speaker 1: little bear a broom, and he swept the floor. And
- 56:00Speaker 1: she said again, there was another little bear, and he
- 56:05Speaker 1: washed all the windows. Then she gave the second little
- 56:10Speaker 1: bear a cloth and a bucket of water, and he
- 56:13Speaker 1: washed all the windows. Then Red Riding Hood said there
- 56:19Speaker 1: were fifteen other little bears, and they all helped to
- 56:23Speaker 1: clean house, so it was as clean as a pin.
- 56:27Speaker 1: When Mama and Papa Bear came home. You would have
- 56:31Speaker 1: laughed to see those little bears running around cleaning house.
- 56:36Speaker 1: They had a very happy time all day. Suddenly one
- 56:41Speaker 1: little bear cried, I am hungry. Then the next little
- 56:46Speaker 1: bear cried, I am hungry. Red Riding Hood said, you
- 56:52Speaker 1: must wait until Papa and Mama come home. Red Riding
- 56:58Speaker 1: Hood and Little Bear got the sun ready, and they
- 57:01Speaker 1: waited and waited and waited, and still Papa and Mama
- 57:08Speaker 1: did not come. Pretty soon a knock was heard, and
- 57:14Speaker 1: there stood two old pedlars at the door. The pedlars
- 57:19Speaker 1: had caps pulled over their faces, and they cried pans
- 57:24Speaker 1: to sell, dishes, to sell, laces to sell. They came
- 57:29Speaker 1: into the house, and all the little bears danced about them.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Then one of the pedlars took off his cap, and
- 57:37Speaker 1: the little bears cried, oh pa. And the other pedlar
- 57:43Speaker 1: took off her cap, and the little bears cried, oh ma.
- 57:50Speaker 1: Wasn't it funny for Papa and Mama Bear to dress
- 57:53Speaker 1: like pedlars. They brought all sorts of presents to the bears.
- 57:59Speaker 1: They brought care and toys and seventeen little red caps.
- 58:05Speaker 1: The little bears put their caps on and danced and
- 58:08Speaker 1: capered around the room. Mama Bear brought a new cape
- 58:12Speaker 1: for Red Riding Hood, and Papa Bear brought her a
- 58:16Speaker 1: new hood. Where is Red Riding Hood, asked Mama Bear.
- 58:22Speaker 1: Where is Red Riding Hood, asked Papa Bear. All look
- 58:27Speaker 1: for her. Where is Red Riding Hood, asked all the
- 58:31Speaker 1: little bears. They looked everywhere, but Red Riding Hood was gone.
- 58:39Speaker 1: Perhaps she is gone to find the sleeping beauty, said
- 58:42Speaker 1: Papa Bear. Perhaps she has gone to see her old
- 58:46Speaker 1: grandmother again. Said curly Bear. Little Bear said, I will
- 58:52Speaker 1: go and find Red riding Hood tomorrow. Grandpa grumbles in
- 58:58Speaker 1: the woods is growing old and gray. He is a
- 59:03Speaker 1: very lonesome bear. He grumbles every day. End of the

- 59:55Speaker 1: Papa and Mama Bear and all the other bears hug
- 59:59Speaker 1: little Bear and kissed him good bye, and shouted, don't
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: get lost in the woods. Don't get lost in the woods.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Little bear was happy. He went off whistling a merry tune.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: He wandered about in the woods all day, and when
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: night came, he saw a light and followed it. The
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: light came from a very little window in a very
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: little house. Little Bear went up to the door of
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: the house and knocked an old bear stuck his head
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: out of a window and called, who is there? Little
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: bear said, I am little Bear. I am lost in
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: the woods. May I come in please? The old bear said,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: I'm called Grandpa Grumbles. What is your name? Then little
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: Bear began to cry and howl and scream, and he
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: made such a dreadful noise that Grandpa Grumbles had to
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: come down and let him in. Grandpa Grumbles was such
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: a cross old bear that none of the animals would
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: live with him. He always grumbled about something. He said
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: it was too hot or too cold, or too wet
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: or too dry, and he was never happy unless he
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: was grumbling. Little Bear limped along into the house. His
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: feet were sore and tired. He said, I haven't any name.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Grandpa Grumbles took little Bear into the dining room and
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: let him sit up in a high chair at the table.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: He said, as he passed little Bear some cake. You
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: can't eat your cake and have it too Eat some cake.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: Then little Bear stopped crying and ate some cake, and
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: pretty soon he said in a whisper, couldn't you find
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: a name for me? Me? Grandpa began to grumble and say,
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: your ma ought to find you a name. If I
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: find you a name, you won't like it, you know.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: You won't like it. Then a gentle rap was heard
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: at the door, and in walked Red Riding Hood. She
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: had a basket of cookies and a pot of butter.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: Grandpa began to grumble in a very fierce way, and
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: Little Bear was afraid he was going to eat Red
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: Riding Hood, so he jumped up on the table and cried,
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: eat me, Grandpa, eat me, Grandpa, I am young and tender.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: Then they all laughed, and Grandpa forgot to grumble, and
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: Red Riding Hood took off her cape and hood and
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: she ate supper with them. Red Riding Hood came often
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: to visit Grandpa Grumbles, as they were old friends. You
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: have been gone along time, said Grandpa Grumbles. Little Bear
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: tried to say something, but his mouth was full of
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: buttered toast and he could not speak. He is trying
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: to talk with his mouth full, grumbled Grandpa. I would
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: like some more cakes, said Red Riding Hood. Then Grandpa
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: Grumbles shouted, pass me the vinegar. I must have vinegar
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: on my cakes. Red Riding Hood passed the vinegar and
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: smiled so sweetly that Grandpa Grumbles forgot what he was
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: grumbling about. Then Little Bear said, Red Riding Hood came
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: to our house, and Bushytail came and stole the cookies.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: Then Grandpa Grumbles grew very angry indeed and shouted, ha ha,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: Bushytail stole the cookies. Well, well, he is no relative
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: of mine. Some one ought to box his ears. Someone
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: ought to box his ears. Then Red Riding Hood laughed,
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: and Little Bear laughed, and Grandpa Grumbles laughed and chuckled
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: and said, I will fix Bushytail. I will punish Bushytail.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: I have a present for him in my grab bag.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: Little Bear was so tired he fell asleep. Red Riding
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: Hood said he is the prettiest little bear I have
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: ever seen. Grandpa Grumbles said, it is a pity he
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: hasn't any name. Bushytail is fond of cookies, so I've
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: heard it said. He eats many every day and carries
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: some to bed. End of Grandpa Grumbles. Twelve Little Rabbit,

- 1:05:20Speaker 1: Recording by Caroline Francis. Little Bear by Laura Rontree smith,
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: Little Rabbit, boohoo. Next morning, Grandpa Grumbles heard a tap
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: on his door. Too early to get up, he grumbled,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: don't wake me up, don't wake me up. Little Bear
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: heard a tap on his door, and he cried, see
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: the sunshine. He dressed and hurried downstairs. Little Bear never
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: liked to be late to breakfast. Breakfast was on the table,
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: and Red Riding Hood said, we will sit down and
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: have breakfast little Bear. Pretty soon a great grumbling was heard,
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: and Grandpa Grumbles came downstairs, one step at a time.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: He was talking to himself. Oh dear, oh dear, he said,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: have to get breakfast for my visitors. When he came
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: into the dining room, he was so surprised to see
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: breakfast on the table that he forgot to grumble. He
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: sat down and drank his coffee without saying a word.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: Suddenly a crash was heard, then another and another. I
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: am being robbed, cried Grandpa Grumbles. Wow, Wow, I am afraid,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: cried little Bear. Red Riding Hood started for the cellar.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: Get a candle, she called. Grandpa Grumbles said, I haven't
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: any candle. Little Bear said, I am afraid to carry
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: a lamp. While they stood there talking. Bushytail came bounding
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: up the cellar stairs. He had a bottle of cider
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: under each arm. I broke some. He said, it is
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: too dark in your cellar. Grandpa Grumbles got a switch
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: and ran after Bushytail. But Bushytail jumped on a sofa
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: and shouted, great news, great news. Of course, they all
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: stopped to listen. Little Bear said, tell us the news,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: tell us the news. Bushytail said, Susan Cottontail has lost
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: her glasses. Then Grandpa began to grumble, and Little Bear
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: rolled over on the floor and laughed until he cried,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: have you any cookies for me today? Asked Bushytail. Red
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: riding Hood said why do you want cookies? She had
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: hardly gotten the words out of her mouth before Bushytail
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: had started into the pantry and helped himself. Then whisk
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: he was out through the window and away as fast
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: as his long legs could carry him. Just at that minute,
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: Little Bear heard a sound, and he said, hush, listen,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: what is it? They heard a wee voice say, I
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: am here, I am lost. Boo hoo. Grandpa Grumbles went
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: to the door and there sat the funniest little rabbit
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: you have ever seen too many visitors. Don't come in,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: said Grandpa Grumbles. The little rabbit said, boo hoo, please
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: let me in. Grandpa Grumbles looked over his spectacles and said,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: what is your name? The cry baby rabbit said, boo hoo.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: That seems a rather bad question to ask around here,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: said Grandpa Grumbles. Red Riding Hood, are you sure you
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: have a name? Red Riding Hood said, I know this
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: little rabbit. She's a good little rabbit, but she cries
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: so much they call her boo hoo. Too many visitors,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Too many visitors, said Grandpa Grumbles. Again, little Bear went
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: up to the rabbit and said, don't cry any more.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: I haven't any name either. Then the little rabbit dried
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: her eyes on a pocket handkerchief, and Grandpa Grumbles shouted,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: give them all some cookies, can't you hear me? Give
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: them all some cookies? Hush, cried Red Riding Hood. Bushy
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: tails stole them all. Then they all shouted, oh ho,
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: bushytail stole all the cookies. Oh ho, bushytail is a
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: sly old fellow. Off to bed, every one of you,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: shouted Grandpa Grumbles. And look under your pillows. Be sure
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: to look under your pillows. Then they all scampered off
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: to bed quickly, you may be sure, And each looked
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: under his pillow. Now what do you suppose was under
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: each pillow? Red riding Hood found a cookie frosted with
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: red sugar. Little Bear found a cookie frosted with blue sugar.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: The Rabbit found a cookie frosted with white sugar. And
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: they all cried hurrah for Grandpa Grumbles. Three cheers for
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: Grandpa Grumbles. Too many visitors, he answered, with a chuckle.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: Too many visitors. Go to bed, every one of you.
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: Then they all went to bed and had pleasant dreams.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: Red riding Hood dreamed that her basket was full of
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: frosted cookies. Little Bear dreamed that he had a very
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: fine blue cookie, as big as a fan. The Little
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: Rabbit dreamed that she saw cookies growing in a farmer's field.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: Grandpa Grumbles lay awake a long time. I will surprise
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: them all tomorrow, he said, I have many surprises in
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: my house. End of Little Rabbit Boohoo, Chapter thirteen, The

- 1:12:09Speaker 1: The magic Cap Grandpa Grumbles in the woods has a
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: grab bag. You know you will find it there some
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: day if to his house you go. Next morning, little
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: Bear got up to get breakfast, and he crept downstairs
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: very softly, for he wanted to surprise the rest. When
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: he got to the kitchen door, he met Red Riding
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: Hood and old Grandpa Grumbles and the little Rabbit. Each
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: one had gotten up early to get the breakfast. Grandpa
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: Grumbles began to shake his head and grumble, and Red
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: Riding Hood laughed, and Little Bear waved his red handkerchief.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Then they all shouted, Hurrah, we will get breakfast together.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: The cry baby rabbit said, boo hoo, I have never
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: gotten breakfast in my life. Grandpa Grumbles looked at her
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: and said, I will give you a better name if
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: you will be still. Boo hoo, boo hoo, said the
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: little rabbit. I don't know whether I want a better
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: name or not. Little Bear danced up and down and
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: he cried, give me a name, Give me a name.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: Grandpa Grumbles said, no, no, look in the garret in
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: my grab bag. They were all pleased at this, and
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: they scampered up into the garret. There. Sure enough, on
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: a nail hung the grab bag. Time to grab, said
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: Grandpa Grumbles. Every one of you must grab. Red riding
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: Hood put in her hand and drew out a gold watch.
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: Keep it, keep it, shouted Grandpa grumbles. It won't run,
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: it won't keep time, but keep it, keep it. Little
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: Bear put in his paw and drew out a silk purse.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: Keep it, shouted Old Grandpa grumbles. It hasn't a cent
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: in it. Then the cry baby rabbit put in her
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: paw and drew out a piece of pasteboard, to which
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: was fastened a tiny bell. She was so disappointed she
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: was ready to cry when old Grandpa Grumble said, keep it,
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: keep it. It has your name on it. Sure enough
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: on the pasteboard was written in very large letters, Bonnie Bell.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: Little Bear tied the bell around the rabbit's neck, and
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: she never was known to cry boohoo again in her life.
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: May we grab again, asked Red riding Hood. Grandpa Grumble said,
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: if I let you grab again, what shall I have
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: left for all my grandchildren? Just then, patter, patter, patter
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: was heard, and Bushytail came creeping upstairs. Oh ho, grab bag,
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: he shouted, Let me grab, Let me grab. Before anyone
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: could say a word, that sly, old Fox put his
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: paw in the bag and drew out a little red cap.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: Put it on. Put it on, shouted Grandpa Grumbles. Bushytail
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: put the cap on and it began to pinch his ears.
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: He cried, oh oh, take it off, Take it off.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: Grandpa Grumbles chased him out of the house and down
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: the road. Little Bear said he will keep out of
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: mischief for a while. Grandpa Grumbles came back, chuckling to himself.
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: What kind of cap did you give him, asked Red
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: Riding Hood. Grandpa Grumbles said, it is a magic cap.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: It will not come off for a year. Oh oh,
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: cried Little Bear. How funny Bushy Tail looked in the cap.
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: Bonnybell said, I am glad you didn't give me a cap.
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: Red Riding Hood said I would rather wear a hood
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: than a magic cap. It is a fine grab bag,
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: said Grandpa Grumbles. Then Red Riding Hood kissed Grandpa Grumbles
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: on his right cheek, and Little Bear kissed him on
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: his left cheek, and Bonnybell kissed him on both cheeks.
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: Grandpa Grumbles was so pleased, he said, softly, nice little visitors,
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: come again. Please. They all laughed and kissed him again.

- 1:17:30Speaker 1: The Pot of Gold. Littlebar is happy now the secret
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: he has told, for he has found the rainbow end
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: and the pot of gold. Next day, Red riding Hood said,
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: I must go and see my grandmother. Littlebear said, I
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: must go home. Bonny Bell said, I will stay with Grandpa.
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: Grandpa Grumbles was so pleased to think that Bonny Bell
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: wanted to stay that he forgot to grumble. Red riding
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: Hood put on her hood and cape, and Little Bear
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: carried her basket, and they went merrily down the road.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: Soon it began to rain, patter, patter, patter fell the
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: big drops. We shall get very wet, said Little Bear.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: We shall see the rainbow, said Red riding Hood. Sure enough,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: pretty soon there came a beautiful rainbow in the sky.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: One end of the rainbow seemed to come in the
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: hollow of a tree. Little Bear ran to the tree
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: and put in one of his paws and drew out
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: the pot of gold. Hurrah, he shouted, I have the gold.
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: Then he opened the pot, and sure enough it was
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: full of five dollar gold pieces. Little Bear poured the
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: gold all out on the ground, and Red riding Hood
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: began to count it. Suddenly little Bear set up a shout.
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: What do you suppose he saw in the bottom of
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: the pot was written in large letters for little Bear.
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: He shall have the pot of gold and a new name.
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: He shall be called Mishi Mokwa, the Great Bear. Little
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: Bear was so happy he danced up and down and shouted,
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: and he laughed until he cried, Now I have a name,
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: a real name. I am Mishi Mokwa the Great Bear,
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: he cried, and all this gold is mine. Little Red
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: riding Hood now said good bye, and little Bear and
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: Curly Bear carried the gold home. What are you going
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: to do with all this gold, asked Curly Bear. Little
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: Bear said, I will give some to Mamma Bear, and
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: some to Papa Bear, and some to all the other bears.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: We shall be quite rich, said curly bear. How much
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: gold will you keep for yourself? I will keep the pot,
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: said little Bear. And he laughed, and Curly Bear laughed,
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: and they went trotting merrily homeward. Did you find a name,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: asked Curly Bear. Little Bear nodded his head, but he whispered,
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: don't you tell yet, Curly Bear. It was evening when
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: they got home. Papa and Mamma Bear and the little
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: bears were eating supper. I never could tell you if
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: I wrote all day how those bears hugged one another.
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: Papa Bear kept saying, where did you find the pot
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: of gold? And they all talked at once. It was
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: a merry time, you may be sure. The little bears
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: all sat down at the table and began to count
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: the gold. Papa and Mamma Bear and all the little
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: bears counted. Each had a pile of gold in front
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: of him. Suddenly some one cried, where is little Bear?
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: They looked about, but they could not find him. Where
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: do you suppose he had gone? He had gone upstairs
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: to hide the pot That the gold came in the
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: precious pot that held his name. Pretty soon he heard
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: them all shouting his name, and he came bounding downstairs,
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: and he cried, let us have a party, a party.
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: So it was decided that all the little bears should
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: go out next day and invite the animals to a party.
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: Little Bear had happy dreams that night. He thought that
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: the animals made him king of the forest. Once he
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: woke up, and he was afraid he had no pot
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: of gold. He was afraid it was all a dream.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: He crept out of bed softly so as not to
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: wake the others. He found the pot where he had
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: hidden it. The moon peeped in through the window, and
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: Little Bear said, old man in the moon, I am
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: very happy. I am no longer little Bear. I am
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: mishy Mogwa. The Great Bear said, all the creatures in
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: the woods, we are glad we came. Hurrah, hurrah for
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: little Bear. At last he's found a name. End of

- 1:23:45Speaker 1: Smith Mischi Mokua the Great Bear. Next day there was
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: a great stir in the woods. The little bears went
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: out to invite all the animals to their party. Mama
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: Bear hired sixteen cooks to help her. She had so
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: much gold now that she was quite rich. The sixteen
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: cooks baked and stewed and boiled things all day. By
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: night all was ready for the party. King Cole, who
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: lived on Primrose Hill, heard about the party, and he
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: sent his three fiddlers so that everyone might dance. At
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: six o'clock, the animals began to come. The cottontail family
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: and the grizzly bear family, the Furry coon family, and
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: the fluffy ball family, the redtail family, and the birds
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: all came. Last of all came old Grandpa Grumbles. He
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: was grumbling as he came along. This bag is too
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: heavy for an old fellow to carry. It is a
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: very heavy bag. But I wouldn't have it lighter, he said.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: They all set up a shout when they saw Grandpa Grumbles,
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: and they ran to help him carry the bag. Now,
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: what do you suppose was in the bag. It was
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: a grab bag, and there was a present in it
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: for everyone. How the animals did enjoy that grab bag.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: After a while, supper was ready, and they had a
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: fine supper. Then they danced and sang, and little Bear
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: told all about his travels and about finding the pot
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: of gold. Just at this minute, Bushetail stuck his head
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: in at the window. He still wore the red cap
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: that pinched his ears, and he felt very cross. He shouted,
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: lil bear, what is your name? What is your name?
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: Then all all the company were very still. They felt
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: sorry for little Bear. Then little Bear drew himself up
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: very tall and shouted at the top of his lungs.
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: I am Mishy moklaw the great Bear. Here here here,
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: cried all the company. But Bushytail would not be still.
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: He cried, how do you know that is your name?
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: Then little Bear went and got the pot the gold
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: had been in, and read the words in the bottom.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: For little Bear, he shall have the gold and a
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: new name. He shall be called Mishi mokwah, the great Bear.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: The animals were all merry. Then you may be sure,
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: bunnygottontail cried, my fur and whisk, but that is a
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: grand name. They all shouted hurrah for Mishi Mokwah the
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Great Bear. We will make him king of the forest.
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: All the bear family were proud and happy. At last,
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: they said goodbye with many hugs and kisses, and all
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: the little bears were sleepy enough to go to bed.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: Mama Bear said, what became of Bushytail? Papa Bear said,
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: I believe he ran away? What do you suppose Bushy
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: Till did. He was so surprised to hear that little
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: bear really had a name, that he ran away and
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: was not heard of for many years. Did he always
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: wear the red cap that pinched his ears? I don't know,
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: for I forgot to ask him. End of Mishi Mokwa
