Transcript
- 0:07Suze: October 2, 2025. Welcome everybody to the Woman and Money
- 0:12Suze: podcast and everybody smart enough to listen. Suze O here
- 0:18Suze: and today's episode is not business as usual. It's not
- 0:23Suze: Ask KT and Suze Anything and why is that? It's
- 0:28Suze: because the government has shut down.
- 0:32Suze: And when Washington grinds to a halt, millions, and I
- 0:36Suze: mean millions of people's paychecks stop cold.
- 0:42Suze: Federal employees, contractors, families, small businesses that depend on that income,
- 0:50Suze: I have to tell you, not only is it frightening,
- 0:53Suze: but in my opinion it is totally frustrating and seriously
- 0:57Suze: it's just unfair, but I'm not going to get into
- 1:01Suze: the politics of this.
- 1:04Suze: But it's just not right. None of it is right,
- 1:08Suze: just so you know. Here's what we're not going to
- 1:12Suze: let happen, at least not on my watch.
- 1:16Suze: If this has affected you, you are not going to
- 1:20Suze: let this fear of what just happened paralyze you, no.
- 1:26Suze: Because fear makes you hide.
- 1:30Suze: And you know I've said it over and over again.
- 1:32Suze: Fear is one of the main internal obstacles to wealth.
- 1:36Suze: You also know that I have said to you courage
- 1:39Suze: is one of the eight qualities of a wealthy, wealthy person.
- 1:45Suze: All right, so you're not going to let fear paralyze
- 1:49Suze: you right now, 'cause again fear makes you hide, but
- 1:53Suze: courage makes you act.
- 1:57Suze: So today I'm going to walk you step by step
- 2:01Suze: through what you can and must do right now to
- 2:06Suze: protect yourself, your money, and your future, and I'm going
- 2:10Suze: to get into the stock market with all of this
- 2:13Suze: as well, but really I want us to take care
- 2:17Suze: of those that are going to be affected by this
- 2:22Suze: because we do not know how long this is going
- 2:25Suze: to last.
- 2:26Suze: The very first thing I want you to do is
- 2:29Suze: just stop.
- 2:31Suze: And get honest with yourself, and I want you to
- 2:34Suze: ask yourself the question. By the way, you should get
- 2:37Suze: out your Suze notebooks. Just do that.
- 2:40Suze: You have to ask yourself the question, and all of
- 2:43Suze: you should do this anyway because you never know when
- 2:46Suze: something like this could happen to you, not where the
- 2:48Suze: government shuts down, but your corporation shuts down. You get fired,
- 2:52Suze: whatever it is you have to do what I'm about
- 2:55Suze: to say. You have to ask yourself what are my
- 3:00Suze: essential expenses?
- 3:03Suze: To keep a roof over your head, food on the table,
- 3:07Suze: utilities and insurance. What is essential for you to live
- 3:13Suze: and pay? Everything else is a want.
- 3:18Suze: Those others are a need. Everything else is a want. Subscriptions,
- 3:23Suze: eating out, extra for the kids. It's all going to
- 3:27Suze: get cut right now cause you cannot afford to waste
- 3:32Suze: even one dollar on something that isn't essential. Now, obviously, even
- 3:37Suze: if you're affected by the federal government, you have a
- 3:39Suze: lot of money. It doesn't matter. You're going to get
- 3:42Suze: through this, OK.
- 3:44Suze: But the majority of you, you know, and I know
- 3:46Suze: you're all still living essentially paycheck to paycheck on some level,
- 3:51Suze: so it's really important that you get real with yourselves. Next,
- 3:57Suze: I need you to communicate before you default. The biggest
- 4:02Suze: mistake people make in a shutdown like this is you
- 4:05Suze: just go silent, you hide, you miss payments.
- 4:10Suze: Right, you let your credit score absolutely just sink, but
- 4:15Suze: on my watch again, you are not going to do that. Instead,
- 4:19Suze: I want you to pick up the phone. I want
- 4:22Suze: you to call your mortgage lender. I want you to
- 4:25Suze: call your credit card company. I want you to call
- 4:28Suze: your utility providers. Call your landlord, and I want you
- 4:32Suze: to tell them the truth.
- 4:34Suze: I'm a federal employee. I'm impacted by the shutdown. I'm
- 4:38Suze: not receiving my paycheck. What hardship program do you have?
- 4:43Suze: Can you waive late fees, defer payments, or reduce my
- 4:47Suze: bill temporarily? Also, I've given a podcast on this. The
- 4:54Suze: greatest words you could ever say, and three of the
- 4:59Suze: greatest words you could ever say is, "could you please."
- 5:04Suze: So when you're calling these people, if you don't have
- 5:07Suze: the money to pay them, it's like, could you please
- 5:10Suze: help me?
- 5:12Suze: Could you please reduce my bill temporarily? Just use those
- 5:18Suze: words now. Write that down, everybody, cause I have to
- 5:22Suze: tell you, you would be absolutely amazed at how many
- 5:26Suze: companies will work with you if you simply ask.
- 5:30Suze: Because protecting your credit score really is protecting your future,
- 5:37Suze: but you have to be proactive. No one is going
- 5:40Suze: to come and rescue you. You have got to rescue yourself.
- 5:46Suze: Next, if you're in a situation where you absolutely must borrow.
- 5:53Suze: All right, but there's a right way and a wrong way.
- 5:57Suze: What's the wrong way? Payday loans, cash advances, anything with
- 6:04Suze: sky high interest fees that will bury you in debt.
- 6:09Suze: What is the better way? It's at this point in
- 6:12Suze: time I want you. Don't faint now.
- 6:15Suze: I want you to use your credit cards, but only
- 6:19Suze: for essentials for those needs. Use the one with the
- 6:23Suze: lowest interest rate, so I want you to charge food, gas, utilities.
- 6:30Suze: Never withdraw cash, however, on your credit cards because that's
- 6:34Suze: going to cost you 21% or so.
- 6:38Suze: So I want you to save any cash that you
- 6:42Suze: may have in your emergency fund right now.
- 6:46Suze: And instead, I want you to put everything on a
- 6:50Suze: credit card at this point in time. Why do I
- 6:55Suze: want you to do that? Because I don't know how
- 6:57Suze: long this is going to last, nor do you.
- 7:00Suze: And I don't want you to use up all your
- 7:04Suze: cash and now go to credit cards. I'd rather you
- 7:07Suze: use up your credit limit first and then you still
- 7:11Suze: have cash just so you know. Also, if you have
- 7:18Suze: a Roth IRA and all of you better have a
- 7:22Suze: Roth IRA at this point in time.
- 7:25Suze: You can withdraw remember any other contributions that you've made.
- 7:31Suze: As long as you don't touch the earnings of just
- 7:36Suze: the contributions without penalty regardless of age and how long
- 7:41Suze: the account has been opened now, that's your last resort.
- 7:46Suze: But if it's the difference really between keeping the lights
- 7:49Suze: on or not, you need to know that that option
- 7:53Suze: exists now for all of you seriously that are listening,
- 7:57Suze: and I know you're thinking to yourself this doesn't affect me.
- 8:01Suze: I don't work for the federal government. You're not directly
- 8:04Suze: impacted by this shutdown.
- 8:07Suze: I am begging you not to tune this out.
- 8:10Suze: Because this is your financial wake up call.
- 8:16Suze: Shutdowns prove one thing. You cannot rely on anyone else.
- 8:22Suze: Remember me all these years I've said you have to
- 8:24Suze: save yourself. The government can't save you. The economy can't
- 8:28Suze: save you. Your family probably can't even save you.
- 8:32Suze: But you have to save yourself.
- 8:36Suze: So the question is, do you have an emergency fund?
- 8:42Suze: Could you survive 12 months without a paycheck? I want
- 8:47Suze: you to be honest to yourself.
- 8:49Suze: And if you can't, I want you to start doing
- 8:53Suze: that and building an eight to 12 months of must
- 8:57Suze: pay expenses and savings right now because that is what
- 9:02Suze: will give you true freedom and peace of mind. I
- 9:05Suze: want you to think about it. You work for the
- 9:07Suze: federal government.
- 9:09Suze: And now they've shut down.
- 9:12Suze: You're not gonna get a paycheck. Maybe you're an air
- 9:14Suze: traffic controller and you're gonna have to work even though
- 9:18Suze: you're not getting a paycheck. You don't have a choice.
- 9:23Suze: If you had a 12 month must pay account or
- 9:27Suze: emergency account that I call it.
- 9:30Suze: You would be all right.
- 9:32Suze: I can still pay my bills. This qualifies as an emergency,
- 9:38Suze: and you would still be relatively calm. Those of you
- 9:42Suze: out there that are freaking out, it's because you don't
- 9:46Suze: have
- 9:47Suze: an emergency fund, you don't have any money saved and
- 9:52Suze: you don't know what you are going to do.
- 9:56Suze: So therefore, you have to do certain things. If you
- 10:00Suze: don't have that emergency fund of eight to 12 months,
- 10:04Suze: I want you to go through your subscriptions, cancel what
- 10:08Suze: you don't need.
- 10:10Suze: Look at your spending habits. Ask yourself the question. If
- 10:14Suze: my paycheck stopped tomorrow, how long could I last? And
- 10:19Suze: if the answer is two weeks, one or two months,
- 10:22Suze: I'm telling you you have work to do because shutdowns
- 10:27Suze: or when you are fired or whenever it may be,
- 10:30Suze: they are painful.
- 10:32Suze: But they are also teachers. They teach us what happens
- 10:36Suze: when we don't plan, and they remind us of the
- 10:39Suze: power of planning ahead. Got that everybody? Again just like
- 10:45Suze: with the hurricane,
- 10:47Suze: you plan for the worst, but you hope for the best,
- 10:50Suze: and then when something happens, you are prepared. That's why
- 10:55Suze: I want you all to have a will and a
- 10:57Suze: trust in the must have documents so that you can
- 11:01Suze: protect your tomorrows today. But if you just keep putting
- 11:05Suze: things off and not deal with reality and something happens
- 11:10Suze: now we're in trouble. Let's talk about something
- 11:15Suze: that I'm sure a lot of you are worried about. Suze,
- 11:19Suze: the markets, what are the markets going to do? The
- 11:22Suze: government has shut down. Should I sell? Should I sell everything?
- 11:26Suze: Are you out of your mind?
- 11:30Suze: Every time that there has been a shutdown, Wall Street
- 11:34Suze: has reacted, absolutely.
- 11:37Suze: But stocks may swing not just down. They may swing
- 11:42Suze: up as well. So when you say, should I sell
- 11:46Suze: before it gets worse, I'm telling you do not panic
- 11:51Suze: here and let me just give you some facts. Let's
- 11:54Suze: go back to the recent shutdown, 2019. Remember that one?
- 11:59Suze: That one was bad, or so we thought, right?
- 12:02Suze: Because it was the longest one in US history, lasting
- 12:07Suze: 35 days. The headlines, I'm telling you, they were terrifying.
- 12:12Suze: You were all freaked. I even did a podcast on
- 12:15Suze: it way back then. If you go back that far.
- 12:19Suze: But here's the truth. Do you know that during that shutdown,
- 12:24Suze: the Standard and Poor's 500 index actually went up about 10%.
- 12:32Suze: Do you know that?
- 12:34Suze: And about 12 months later, the S&P had gained about 26%.
- 12:42Suze: Think about that. You would have thought during those 35
- 12:46Suze: days the markets would have been destroyed and everything. They
- 12:49Suze: actually went up about 10%.
- 12:55Suze: I can tell you,
- 12:57Suze: the other day I was looking at Colo's portfolio.
- 13:03Suze: And I was going, oh God, here we go.
- 13:06Suze: And we were down to a certain amount of money.
- 13:08Suze: It had gone down about $2,000 or whatever. When I
- 13:12Suze: looked Wednesday morning, it was higher. His portfolio was higher
- 13:19Suze: than it was the day before they announced the shutdown.
- 13:23Suze: It was the fear of it's going to shut down,
- 13:26Suze: we better sell.
- 13:28Suze: And now a day later it was even higher. OK,
- 13:33Suze: let's go back to 2013, which was a six day shutdown.
- 13:40Suze: Guess what?
- 13:41Suze: The market rose about 3% while the government was closed
- 13:48Suze: and in the year after,
- 13:51Suze: it was up nearly 20%. So you must hear me
- 13:55Suze: loud and clear, that while shutdowns may rattle your nerves,
- 14:00Suze: it's only in the moment. But history has shown us
- 14:06Suze: that they have been nothing more than a blip, just
- 14:09Suze: a blip, everybody, and what really drives the market long
- 14:14Suze: term is the Federal Reserve interest rate earnings, the strength
- 14:20Suze: in the economy, and how much money is on the
- 14:24Suze: sidelines waiting to be invested, not Washington's dysfunction.
- 14:31Suze: So the truth is the only people hurt by market
- 14:36Suze: swings are the ones who make emotional decisions. So if
- 14:42Suze: you sold in the panic or if you tend to
- 14:45Suze: sell in a panic, you lock in your losses, and
- 14:49Suze: if you simply stay invested, you give your money time
- 14:53Suze: to recover and grow. Now that happened with the tariffs.
- 14:58Suze: Aren't you glad you didn't sell? It happened
- 15:03Suze: when the pandemic happened, the markets went down. I was
- 15:07Suze: telling you, don't sell, buy, do certain things, aren't you
- 15:11Suze: glad you did.
- 15:13Suze: So what should you do now? You need to stay
- 15:18Suze: the course. If you're investing for retirement, keep contributing to
- 15:23Suze: your Roth 401k, your Roth IRA. Do not stop, do
- 15:29Suze: not pull money out. You need to be focused on quality,
- 15:33Suze: these broad-based index funds if you want.
- 15:36Suze: Diversified portfolios but also the individual stocks that we have
- 15:42Suze: been talking about that just are fabulous, fabulous, everybody. So
- 15:50Suze: if you combine those individual stocks that we've been talking
- 15:53Suze: about with a percent of your portfolio in VOO, you're
- 15:59Suze: going to be just fine. You need to look at
- 16:02Suze: what's happening here.
- 16:05Suze: And use this as a test of your courage.
- 16:10Suze: And that volatility seriously is the price of admission for
- 16:15Suze: long term growth like I was literally hoping that these
- 16:19Suze: markets would go down big time.
- 16:22Suze: So that I could buy more of the things that
- 16:25Suze: had been going straight up.
- 16:28Suze: So if a shutdown, for instance, makes you lose sleep,
- 16:31Suze: it's not the shutdown that's the problem, it's that your
- 16:35Suze: portfolio may be too risky or you are somebody who
- 16:39Suze: just maybe doesn't belong in the stock market at all.
- 16:44Suze: And listen to me if you have cash on the sidelines.
- 16:48Suze: Any volatility that you're actually seeing here now.
- 16:53Suze: It is in my opinion, an opportunity for you to
- 16:57Suze: invest that money.
- 17:01Suze: Remember strong companies, the ones that we have been talking
- 17:04Suze: to you about for the past year or so, they
- 17:08Suze: don't become weak just because Congress can't pass a budget.
- 17:15Suze: So sometimes temporary dips are your chance to buy at
- 17:20Suze: a discount. But, and you know me by now, don't you?
- 17:25Suze: Tell me you know me by now. I only want
- 17:29Suze: you to invest money
- 17:31Suze: that you are not going to need for at least
- 17:34Suze: five or 10 years, preferably longer. I only want you
- 17:39Suze: to invest money when your emergency or, like I say,
- 17:43Suze: the must pay account is in place.
- 17:46Suze: And you have to get that the stock market is
- 17:49Suze: for long term goals. It is not for you to
- 17:54Suze: invest money that you may need in the next few years,
- 17:57Suze: and it's not for you to invest, oh, something's gone
- 18:00Suze: up 10% or 20%. I should sell. No, it is
- 18:04Suze: for years from now, long term investing, so the shutdown's
- 18:09Suze: going to come and it's going to go. Markets are
- 18:12Suze: going to rise and they're going to fall.
- 18:15Suze: But financial independence really everybody belongs to those who don't
- 18:22Suze: get shaken by headlines. You want to build wealth? Do
- 18:27Suze: you want to build wealth? I want you to build wealth.
- 18:30Suze: I want you to make your money, make more money.
- 18:33Suze: Then repeat after me and write down this new truth
- 18:39Suze: that I want you to say over and over again.
- 18:43Suze: I do not sell out of fear.
- 18:46Suze: I do not buy out of greed.
- 18:49Suze: And I invest with courage and discipline.
- 18:54Suze: So what is it that I want you to take
- 18:57Suze: from this podcast? I want you to remember that courage
- 19:03Suze: is not the absence of fear. Courage is doing what
- 19:07Suze: you must do even when you are afraid.
- 19:11Suze: And I get it, everybody. I get that it's scary
- 19:14Suze: when your paycheck stops. I get that it's exhausting to
- 19:19Suze: fight through all the red tape.
- 19:22Suze: But you are stronger than this shutdown. You are stronger
- 19:26Suze: than any market decline.
- 19:28Suze: You have the power to cut back. You have the
- 19:32Suze: power to negotiate. You have the power to protect yourself
- 19:35Suze: and your family.
- 19:37Suze: And when it comes to your investments, courage, as I
- 19:41Suze: said earlier, one of the qualities of wealth is staying
- 19:46Suze: the course when everyone else is panicking.
- 19:51Suze: That's how wealth is built, so repeat after me.
- 19:55Suze: I am my own greatest rescuer.
- 20:00Suze: You're gonna rescue yourself.
- 20:04Suze: And that, my friends, is how you get through a
- 20:07Suze: government shutdown with clarity, with courage, and with conviction that
- 20:14Suze: no matter what happens in Washington you have the power
- 20:18Suze: to secure your own financial life.
- 20:24Suze: So until next time there's only one thing I want
- 20:27Suze: you to remember when it comes to your money, and
- 20:30Suze: it's this people first, then money, then things. Now you
- 20:36Suze: stay safe and strong. See you soon. Bye bye.
