Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: John Meston wrote this Gunsmoke story with Norman MacDonald producing
- 0:05Speaker 1: and directing. On February 13th, 1954, CBS Radio brought listeners
- 0:11Speaker 1: episode 95, The Killer, with William Conrad as Marshal Matt Dillon,
- 0:16Speaker 1: Parley Bear as Chester, and Georgia Ellis as Kitty. In
- 0:21Speaker 1: Dodge City, a gunman arrives with a pattern of provoking
- 0:25Speaker 1: men he judges he can overcome, then pleading self-defense after
- 0:29Speaker 1: the shooting. Dylan and Chester recognize the danger as townspeople
- 0:33Speaker 1: are drawn into his confrontations. Also heard are Lawrence Dobkin,
- 0:38Speaker 1: Vic Perrin, Howard Culver, and Richard Deacon. The story was
- 0:43Speaker 1: later adapted for CBS television, broadcast May 26, 1956. We
- 0:49Speaker 1: now take you back to the original broadcast. Around Dodge
- 1:02Speaker 1: City and in the Territory on West, there's just one
- 1:05Speaker 1: way to handle the killers and the spoilers, and that's
- 1:08Speaker 1: with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of Gunsmoke. Gunsmoke,
- 1:29Speaker 1: starring William Conrad.
- 1:31Speaker 2: The story of the violence that moved west with young America.
- 1:34Speaker 2: The story of a man who moved with it. Matt Dillon,
- 1:39Speaker 2: United States Marshal.
- 2:05Speaker 3: What are you building up the fire this time of
- 2:08Speaker 3: night for?
- 2:09Speaker 4: More light.
- 2:10Speaker 3: See better? See what?
- 2:13Speaker 4: Nothing. I just want more.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Light, that's all.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Mister, ever since we met on the trail back there
- 2:19Speaker 5: this afternoon, you've been watching me.
- 2:22Speaker 4: We're strangers, ain't we?
- 2:23Speaker 6: Sure.
- 2:25Speaker 3: You've been watching me, too. I did at first, but
- 2:27Speaker 3: I trust you now. Crawl back in your blanket. Okay.
- 2:34Speaker 6: Okay?
- 2:40Speaker 3: Well, that's better. Now go to sleep, will you?
- 2:45Speaker 7: You going to sleep?
- 2:47Speaker 3: I'd like to watch the stars a little while first.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Ain't no stars by me.
- 2:53Speaker 5: I can see them over your shoulder there. Laying on
- 2:56Speaker 5: my back gives.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Me the ache. Gives me the ache, too. We got
- 3:01Speaker 3: a lot in common, mister.
- 3:02Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 3:05Speaker 3: You never told me what name you go by.
- 3:08Speaker 4: You never told me neither.
- 3:10Speaker 5: Doggone it, you ain't the most suspicious man I ever
- 3:13Speaker 5: run into.
- 3:15Speaker 3: I'm still alive. You ought to quit worrying so much
- 3:18Speaker 3: you get old before your time. My pa taught me
- 3:22Speaker 3: to worry. Who's your pa? He's dead. Died worrying probably.
- 3:28Speaker 7: No.
- 3:29Speaker 3: No, he died of the milk sickness. He was a
- 3:32Speaker 3: good man, though. He ain't any good man. He was. Why?
- 3:37Speaker 7: What he believed in.
- 3:38Speaker 3: What did he believe in?
- 3:40Speaker 1: Well, he always said he believed in foot washing, saving
- 3:43Speaker 1: your seed potatoes, and paying your honest debt.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Your pa was crazy. I'm going crazy if I don't
- 3:50Speaker 3: get the bugs out of this blanket.
- 3:52Speaker 7: Shake them out.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I'm going to. Mm-hmm. Killed him first shot. Well, now
- 4:22Speaker 3: I can get me some sleep. The End.
- 4:43Speaker 4: It beats me how you know which way to go, Mr.
- 4:46Speaker 7: Dillon.
- 4:46Speaker 3: That's easy, Chester.
- 4:48Speaker 8: Yeah, but all the fella said was he'd found a
- 4:50Speaker 8: man's body some 20 miles east of Dodge.
- 4:54Speaker 4: He'd been riding like he knew right where it was laying.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Well, he was a teamster, Chester. I'd just been following
- 4:59Speaker 3: his wagon tracks, that's all. Oh.
- 5:01Speaker 4: I don't know, Mr. Dillon. Maybe I shouldn't never leave Dodge.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Chester, there he is straight ahead there. You see?
- 5:14Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 5:15Speaker 4: That must be it, all right.
- 5:17Speaker 6: Well, looky there.
- 5:35Speaker 4: He's still in his blanket.
- 5:36Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Looks like he was shot right in the heart.
- 5:45Speaker 8: Well, at least the poor fellow died in his sleep.
- 5:49Speaker 3: He must have come half awake, his hands on his gun.
- 5:53Speaker 8: He never got it out, though. Somebody sure jumped him fast. Say,
- 6:00Speaker 8: maybe it was Indians.
- 6:02Speaker 3: No. No, his hair's still on. Now, besides... Somebody was
- 6:12Speaker 3: sleeping over here.
- 6:13Speaker 8: I declare.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Who do you suppose it was? I don't know, Chester.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Bet he couldn't be a very brave man.
- 6:23Speaker 4: No, sir, he sure couldn't. He was a very coward.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Go get that shovel off your saddle, huh, Chester?
- 6:32Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Thank you. Well, Mr.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Dillon, it's worth a long ride like that, if only
- 6:57Speaker 4: to work up.
- 6:57Speaker 3: A good thirst. I've seen you work up a good
- 7:05Speaker 3: thirst just sitting around, Chester.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 7:08Speaker 4: I'm just lucky, I guess.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Well, I never heard it called that before. Give me
- 7:13Speaker 3: a glass of beer, Barkeep. Beer's nothing. Give him whiskey.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I don't want whiskey. Ain't you man enough to drink whiskey?
- 7:23Speaker 3: Drink it when I want it. I don't believe you do.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Drink some now.
- 7:28Speaker 7: I ain't bothering you.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Can't a man come in here and have what he wants? Cowboy,
- 7:33Speaker 3: ain't you? What's wrong with being a cowboy? Nothing. Only
- 7:38Speaker 3: I always thought it took a man to be a cowboy.
- 7:42Speaker 3: You trying to start trouble, mister? Why, listen to him.
- 7:48Speaker 3: What's so funny about that? I killed a man once
- 7:53Speaker 3: for telling me not to laugh.
- 7:55Speaker 5: I ain't telling you nothing. Mister, I think you're a coward.
- 8:01Speaker 5: You got a gun in your belt. Go ahead, use it.
- 8:05Speaker 3: What for? So she can kill me and call it self-defense?
- 8:11Speaker 3: All right, that's enough. Leave him alone. What are you
- 8:12Speaker 3: mixing in this for? I don't like gunfighting around here.
- 8:15Speaker 3: You don't like it. I'm a U.S. Marshal. Oh, Marshal. Now,
- 8:20Speaker 3: what's your name, stranger? I'm called Crego. All right, Crego,
- 8:24Speaker 3: move down the bar. Go on, move. I'll see you later, cowboy.
- 8:45Speaker 3: How wouldn't it dare draw on him, Marshal? I ain't
- 8:48Speaker 3: no gunman. He'd have killed me, sure. Yeah, he probably
- 8:51Speaker 3: would have. My name's Jesse Hill, Marshal. I'm proud to
- 8:56Speaker 3: know you. Jesse, you keep that gun in your belt, huh?
- 9:00Speaker 3: And stay away from Crego? I ain't no troublemaker. Yeah,
- 9:03Speaker 3: I know. But sometimes a man can't avoid it. Not
- 9:07Speaker 3: around somebody like him. Yeah. Well, I think I'll do
- 9:11Speaker 3: my drinking across the street. See you later, Chelsea. Yeah,
- 9:14Speaker 3: so long.
- 9:19Speaker 4: That Crego's an awful mean man, Mr.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Dillon. Yeah, he's mean all right.
- 9:24Speaker 9: Especially when he's sure the other man hasn't got a chance.
- 9:28Speaker 4: I wonder where he came from. I never saw him
- 9:31Speaker 4: around here before.
- 9:32Speaker 9: He's new in Dodge, Chester. Let me tell you something.
- 9:37Speaker 9: It had to be that kind of a man who
- 9:39Speaker 9: killed that cowboy.
- 9:40Speaker 3: We buried today.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Well, you think it was him?
- 9:43Speaker 3: Well, he could have done it. He's enough of a coward.
- 9:46Speaker 3: But if he did, no one could ever prove it.
- 9:49Speaker 4: No, sir, I guess not.
- 9:51Speaker 3: But he'll make a mistake, yeah, Chester. His kind always do.
- 10:12Speaker 7: You like that material, Kitty?
- 10:15Speaker 4: I'd like to make a dress of it.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Is this all you have, Mr. Jonas?
- 10:19Speaker 7: I'm afraid so. But I'll order more if you want it.
- 10:22Speaker 3: How long will it take?
- 10:24Speaker 7: A few weeks is all.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Okay.
- 10:27Speaker 4: I'll need about seven yards.
- 10:30Speaker 3: You'll have it, Kitty.
- 10:32Speaker 7: And say, look here. These new parasols. They just come
- 10:38Speaker 7: on the Santa Fe today. From St.
- 10:41Speaker 6: Louis.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Hello, Matt.
- 10:43Speaker 9: Hello, Kitty.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Mr. Jonas.
- 10:45Speaker 7: Mr.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Jonas.
- 10:46Speaker 7: Your coat's out back, Marshal.
- 10:48Speaker 6: Oh?
- 10:48Speaker 3: You can go try.
- 10:49Speaker 7: It on if you want.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Oh, new coat, huh? I'd like to see it, Matt. Well,
- 10:54Speaker 3: you wait here, Kitty, and I'll just go put it on.
- 10:57Speaker 7: Sure hope it fits. I had a parcel of trouble
- 11:00Speaker 7: talking him into ordering that coat.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Well, he's needed it ever since I've known him.
- 11:06Speaker 7: Men just don't like new things, Kitty.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:09Speaker 7: Now, is there anything else?
- 11:11Speaker 3: Oh, no.
- 11:12Speaker 4: That's all for today. How much do I owe you?
- 11:15Speaker 7: Oh. Yeah, let's see here. I'll have to add it up.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Well, now, there's a right pretty girl.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Go on back to your hogs, mister.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Salty, too. I like that.
- 11:30Speaker 7: Oh, now, look here.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Now, don't pay any attention to him, Mr. Jones.
- 11:34Speaker 4: You got it figured?
- 11:35Speaker 7: Well, it comes to about $ 2. 40, kid.
- 11:39Speaker 3: I'll pay it. What? I says I'll pay it. You'll
- 11:42Speaker 3: do nothing of the kind. Put it on my bill, Mr. Jones. Oh,
- 11:45Speaker 3: there you are. I like to buy things for pretty girls.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Providing they let me carry the package home for them.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Now get out of here and leave me alone or
- 11:55Speaker 5: I'll hit you again.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Maybe you're a little too salty. Maybe what you need
- 12:01Speaker 3: is a... Go ahead, Craig.
- 12:07Speaker 9: Finish what you were going to say. It's no business
- 12:12Speaker 9: of yours. I want to hear what you were going
- 12:13Speaker 9: to say.
- 12:14Speaker 3: She slapped me. You saw her.
- 12:15Speaker 7: Get out of the way, Kitty.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Gladly.
- 12:17Speaker 7: Now, let's not fight.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Be quiet, Mr. Jonas. Yes, sir. Gregor, I think you're
- 12:27Speaker 3: a coward. I'm going to prove it. What are you
- 12:31Speaker 3: up to?
- 12:31Speaker 9: That cowboy Jesse wouldn't draw on you.
- 12:35Speaker 3: But I will. Are you ready? No. Let me... There,
- 12:44Speaker 3: I got my gun out and you didn't do a thing,
- 12:46Speaker 3: did you? I ain't drawing on you.
- 12:55Speaker 7: All right, now get out of here, Kriegel.
- 12:57Speaker 9: And if I ever see you anywhere near Miss Kitty again,
- 13:00Speaker 9: I'm going to break your neck.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Now go on, get out. He sure showed his colors, Matt. Yeah.
- 13:18Speaker 3: You know, I think that's the first time I ever
- 13:21Speaker 3: saw you draw first.
- 13:22Speaker 4: On a man.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Well, I figured he wouldn't draw, Kitty.
- 13:25Speaker 4: How'd you know?
- 13:26Speaker 9: Now, Crego doesn't take any chances. And right now, I'm
- 13:31Speaker 9: wondering how many more men he's gonna kill.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Before he's through.
- 13:52Speaker 4: Chester.
- 13:53Speaker 3: I'm back here, Mr.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Dillon.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Well, come out front, huh? Yes, sir.
- 14:02Speaker 4: You picked a mighty poor time to ride out to
- 14:04Speaker 4: Fort Dodge. You don't mind me saying so.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Tell me what happened, Chester. I hear that you witnessed it. Yes, sir.
- 14:10Speaker 3: I was right there, Mr. Dillon.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Crego agged him into drawing first.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Self-defense again, is that it? Yes, sir. The poor fellow
- 14:18Speaker 3: was awful slow.
- 14:19Speaker 4: And you know what Crego did?
- 14:21Speaker 3: What?
- 14:21Speaker 8: Well, he shot him in the gun arm first, then
- 14:24Speaker 8: through both knees. And finally, he shot him in the
- 14:27Speaker 8: belly and killed him. There was nothing I could do
- 14:30Speaker 8: once they'd started.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Yeah. Who was he, Chester?
- 14:34Speaker 4: A fellow named Lydak, as they told me.
- 14:37Speaker 8: Some stranger. Why don't you run Crego out of town?
- 14:42Speaker 9: Running him out of Dodge would just mean he'd go
- 14:43Speaker 9: murder somebody someplace.
- 14:45Speaker 10: Else, Chester.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Well, at least he wouldn't be doing it here.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I know. But somehow I.
- 14:52Speaker 3: I'd feel responsible for letting him get away.
- 14:54Speaker 8: Vermins like that oughtn't be allowed to live.
- 14:58Speaker 9: Well, they wouldn't be alive if he wasn't so careful
- 15:01Speaker 9: about picking the man he shoots.
- 15:03Speaker 4: No, sir. Oh, say, Doc was down a little while ago.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Huh?
- 15:07Speaker 8: He's through with autopsy and wants to know who's gonna
- 15:09Speaker 8: bury that fella.
- 15:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Uh... Did he have any friends? Yes, sir.
- 15:24Speaker 8: That cowboy Crego tried to fight, Jesse Hill. I think
- 15:27Speaker 8: he was a friend of his. He helped carry him
- 15:30Speaker 8: up to docks anyway, and he seemed real mad about
- 15:32Speaker 8: it all. Quiet, you know, but mad.
- 15:36Speaker 3: That could lead to trouble.
- 15:38Speaker 4: How do you mean?
- 15:39Speaker 3: Well, Jesse backed off.
- 15:41Speaker 9: From Crego once, but... He might go looking for him now.
- 15:46Speaker 9: I don't think he'd have a chance.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Then we'd sure better find him, Mr.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Dillon. Yeah, Chester, we better.
- 15:52Speaker 10: Come on.
- 16:11Speaker 4: Maybe Jesse left town, Mr. Dillon.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Well, I hope so. Though we haven't looked at every
- 16:16Speaker 3: place yet.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Somebody said he had a room at the Dodge house.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Oh? Seems to be pretty fancy for a line writer,
- 16:24Speaker 3: doesn't it?
- 16:24Speaker 4: I mean, they probably spent six months' pay in the
- 16:27Speaker 4: last few days.
- 16:28Speaker 3: They always do.
- 16:29Speaker 9: Well, they can't spend it out on the prairie, Chester.
- 16:32Speaker 9: I guess it doesn't mean much to them.
- 16:34Speaker 8: Yeah, I know, but you'd think they'd save a little money,
- 16:37Speaker 8: a few dollars at least.
- 16:39Speaker 3: Oh. Tell me something, Chester.
- 16:43Speaker 6: Hmm?
- 16:45Speaker 3: When were you at the bank last?
- 16:47Speaker 4: Well, I keep my money in my sock, Mr.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Dillon. It's safer.
- 16:51Speaker 10: Oh, maybe, yeah.
- 16:54Speaker 9: Isn't that kind of tough on the merchants when you
- 16:56Speaker 9: go to spend it, though?
- 16:58Speaker 4: Well, nobody ain't turned it down yet. Money's money.
- 17:02Speaker 3: Wait a minute.
- 17:04Speaker 9: There's Jesse across the plaza there. Yeah, that's Crego he's
- 17:09Speaker 9: talking to.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Come on.
- 17:13Speaker 4: Hey, it looks like they're having an argument, Mr. Dillon.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:17Speaker 4: You gonna stop it?
- 17:17Speaker 3: Well, if I can. Crego! Jesse! They're about to fight, Mr.
- 17:24Speaker 6: Dillon.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Murder them, Crego. Hold it, Jesse! All right, Crego. Put
- 17:34Speaker 3: your gun away. Sure. He tried to shoot me, Marshal.
- 17:39Speaker 3: You saw him.
- 17:41Speaker 6: He's dead, Mr.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Dillon. Well, that was pretty easy for you, wasn't it, Crego?
- 17:46Speaker 3: He shouldn't have tried it, Marshal. I told him not to.
- 17:50Speaker 3: You're lying. I heard what you told him. Well, what
- 17:53Speaker 3: difference does it make? He drew first. I shot him
- 17:57Speaker 3: in self-defense. Yeah, sure. Crego, did you know that man
- 18:01Speaker 3: you killed the other night was Jesse Hill's friend? Jesse
- 18:05Speaker 3: was telling me that just now. Well, I got an idea.
- 18:08Speaker 3: You talked him into drawing just to work Jesse up
- 18:10Speaker 3: to a fight. You're both a couple of bums, Marshal.
- 18:14Speaker 9: How about that man on the prairie?
- 18:18Speaker 3: Was he a bum? What man? The one that was
- 18:23Speaker 3: lying wrapped in his blanket. I don't know what you're
- 18:27Speaker 3: talking about, Marshal. Crego. How long you been killing people?
- 18:35Speaker 11: Marshal, I killed my first man when I was 18.
- 18:40Speaker 11: Fellow tried to knife me, so I shot him. I'll
- 18:44Speaker 11: tell you something else. I ain't wanted by the law nowheres.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Nowheres at all. Did you ever fight a man who
- 18:51Speaker 3: can handle a gun? What do you mean?
- 18:54Speaker 9: You will someday, Griggo. You'll make a mistake and pick
- 18:58Speaker 9: on the wrong man.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Will I, Marshal? Well, I'm going to go and get
- 19:05Speaker 3: me a drink.
- 19:06Speaker 6: Why did the Marshal ask you to come, Marshal?
- 19:10Speaker 4: Ain't there nothing you can do about him, Mr. Dillon?
- 19:15Speaker 3: There's one thing I can do, Chester. At first, we'll
- 19:21Speaker 3: get Jesse and his friend buried.
- 19:23Speaker 1: The End.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Frigo's still standing at the bar of the Alphagans, Mr. Dillon.
- 19:42Speaker 3: All right, Chester.
- 19:44Speaker 4: You going to take him in?
- 19:46Speaker 3: No. I'd just have to turn him loose sooner or later.
- 19:51Speaker 4: Well, what are you gonna do?
- 19:54Speaker 3: Something I've never done before, Chester. But if it works,
- 19:58Speaker 3: it'll save some lives. How? You'll see.
- 20:05Speaker 8: He was bragging about already killing two men since he's
- 20:08Speaker 8: been in Dodge.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Well, he'll go right on killing men if he isn't stopped.
- 20:12Speaker 8: He's like one of them hound dogs that gets a
- 20:14Speaker 8: taste of blood in his mouth and sort of goes
- 20:17Speaker 8: crazy with it, ain't he?
- 20:18Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what he's like. Okay. Here we are.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Is there anything you want me to do, Mr. Dillon?
- 20:31Speaker 3: Yes, there is, Chester. What? Well, you'll know when the
- 20:36Speaker 3: time comes. Let's stay out of the way.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 20:47Speaker 6: Rigo.
- 20:47Speaker 3: What do you want now, Marshal? I've been thinking about you, Kriegel.
- 21:05Speaker 3: And I've decided that... you're not fit to live. You
- 21:12Speaker 3: got no call, Marshal. I killed them men in self-defense. Sure.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Ain't no court in the world that'd convict me. I'm
- 21:19Speaker 3: plumbing this. I'm not talking about hanging you. What are
- 21:23Speaker 3: you talking about? Kriegel, I'm gonna walk out of here
- 21:28Speaker 3: and wait for you in the street. And I'm gonna
- 21:30Speaker 3: wait one minute... And if you're not there in one minute,
- 21:34Speaker 3: I'm coming back. What for? I'm going to kill you. No. No,
- 21:42Speaker 3: I ain't going to fight you. Yes, you are. One minute, Grigor. Mr.
- 22:01Speaker 10: Dillon!
- 22:08Speaker 4: You.
