Transcript
- 0:00Break fix podcast is all about capturing the living history of people from
- 0:04all over the auto sphere, from wrench turners and racers to artists, authors,
- 0:09designers, and everything in between.
- 0:11Our goal is to inspire a new generation of petrol heads that wonder.
- 0:16How did they get that job or become that person?
- 0:19The road to success is paved by all of us because everyone has a story.
- 0:27Continuing our quest to spread motorsports enthusiasm.
- 0:30Tonight, we get as close to the asphalt as possible by sitting down
- 0:33with two gentlemen who are on course to redefine the world of carding.
- 0:36Our guests tonight are Dr.
- 0:38Anthony Jechezero.
- 0:39Also known as Dr.
- 0:41T, a 23 year physical medicine and health expert with over two decades of
- 0:46motorcycles and road racing behind him.
- 0:48He has turned to the world of karting with his partner Race Liberante, who
- 0:52started in karting at the age of four and 21 years later has won multiple
- 0:56karting championships, working his way into stock car racing and is the reigning
- 1:01SK USA pro tour shifter champion.
- 1:04And as always, I'm your host Brad and I'm Eric.
- 1:07So without further ado, we'd like to welcome Dr.
- 1:09T and race to break, fix, to share their stories and talk about their
- 1:13latest endeavor, race factory USA and all American carting
- 1:16company and chassis builder.
- 1:18Welcome to the show guys.
- 1:19Hey guys, how you doing today?
- 1:21So Dr.
- 1:22T tell us all about your background, your motorsports history.
- 1:26You know, it's funny that you ask that question because my motorsports background
- 1:29started where race is probably is now.
- 1:32I wasn't allowed to have any of this fun stuff growing up.
- 1:34It's a really brief history to be honest with you.
- 1:37With my parents, we just really didn't have the money to do that
- 1:40and, and I was a baseball kid.
- 1:42Well, I actually got to drive some cars and some bikes and did
- 1:44some things my parents didn't know about when I was younger.
- 1:47So that's where the decades comes in.
- 1:49It's a lot of fun.
- 1:50That's why I always wanted to do it.
- 1:51I just didn't have the money to do it, right?
- 1:53Like most, most kids out there.
- 1:55I started when I got out of school and doing some motorcycle road racing.
- 1:59Ran some Ducati Heavy Twin stuff and, uh, Yamaha R6 stuff.
- 2:03Jumped into some cars and had fun with that for a while and then just
- 2:07Bounced around to different things.
- 2:09We've been doing some things here and there, uh, always.
- 2:12So surprisingly being a motor sports organization, we are very well
- 2:17versed in different disciplines.
- 2:18Those being, you know, karting, drag racing, rally, road racing, et cetera.
- 2:23Even motorcycles, a surprising number of people in the
- 2:25organization are into bikes as well.
- 2:27So I saw Brad raises eyebrows there as you were talking
- 2:30about Ducati's and other bikes.
- 2:31So you definitely got his interest, but I'm going to, I'm
- 2:34going to ask the tough questions.
- 2:35You know the car question.
- 2:37So what kind of cars were you running?
- 2:38Well, we were running some m3 stuff e36 m3 stuff.
- 2:41I still have that car I did some dirt track with a patient of mine who said
- 2:47hey you race and I said, yeah I said come drive these cars Can you do that?
- 2:53Sure I can so Who would say no, right?
- 2:56So we just got in the car and we and we and we had some fun doing that
- 3:00Did a little bit of teaching for scca Some of the cars that i've had
- 3:03i've usually had at least a corvette.
- 3:06I have a 2018 transport corvette now that we did a little bit of Teaching
- 3:10and with that those are the highlights.
- 3:12I guess there's there's been a lot of clunkers that we've taken around the track
- 3:15So, let me ask this question as a petrol head what would be your ideal car If I
- 3:23could have any car and at some point I will have one of these cars the ferrari
- 3:28458 And I know it sounds like a cliche today But I got to drive the V10 Audi,
- 3:34the Z06 Corvette, the twin turbo Porsche, the 430 Ferrari, and the 458 Ferrari at
- 3:41an Extreme Experience Day, back to back.
- 3:43I came in, I bought all the cars, and I bought extra laps in all of them,
- 3:46because I wanted to A B test all of them.
- 3:48And those two Ferraris were the cars.
- 3:51I wasn't crazy impressed with the Porsche.
- 3:53Sorry to all those Porsche guys out there.
- 3:54I mean, it's an amazing car But that's not the one I think about it's also
- 3:58not the one that's I have a picture of it in my office I have a of the of the
- 4:03458 now the 488 is out So but that that car was just amazing whether it was in
- 4:08manual transmission mode or you know Power shift mode or just in automatic
- 4:12mode if the car does things that it does it before you think it it's just
- 4:15amazing So it's funny you mentioned you have it up on your wall in your office.
- 4:19So what was on your wall as a kid?
- 4:21All of them, there wasn't a space on my wall.
- 4:27It's really funny that you asked that question.
- 4:28We were just talking about this every year for Christmas, I would
- 4:31get stock car racer magazine.
- 4:33I would not have it all year, but Santa would bring it for me
- 4:36when I was a little, little kid.
- 4:38Right.
- 4:38And in my stocking, there'd be stock car racer magazine and we
- 4:40watched stock car racing and it was a big fan of Richard Petty.
- 4:43My grandmother was a big fan.
- 4:45Like I said, my dad wasn't so much into that kind of stuff.
- 4:48Uh, he was a, like a low and slow guy.
- 4:50I call him, you know, just chrome it.
- 4:52He's not a racer by any means.
- 4:54He's passed a couple of years now, but he would laugh and agree with me on that one.
- 4:58But yeah, so there was that.
- 4:59And every once in a while we'd be able to get some formula one or some open
- 5:02wheel racing every year, we watched the Indy 500, those cars, and then the
- 5:06muscle cars were always, uh, on my walls.
- 5:09I'm lucky enough to have a GT 350 Shelby a couple other things too.
- 5:12So there's that is quite a collection there Out of those
- 5:16motorsports that you mentioned.
- 5:17Is there a favorite that you prefer watching on tv or even let's say
- 5:21Would prefer to drive in yourself Oh, well, I Formula One, of course,
- 5:27that would be a dream too far.
- 5:29Surprise race isn't laughing out loud right now.
- 5:31To be honest with you, the IndyCar series is better racing right now than Formula
- 5:36One is, and I wholeheartedly disagree.
- 5:39And I hope anyone who's listening to this, someone high up in the FIA gets
- 5:43back to having us some grid girls to Formula One and everywhere else, because.
- 5:50I don't see it as sexist.
- 5:51I see it as part of the show, right?
- 5:53You know, who goes to Monaco just to stay in a hotel room?
- 5:56You don't do that.
- 5:57Well, no, nobody's going to Monaco right now with everything
- 6:00that's going on, right?
- 6:00Well, point being, granted, yeah.
- 6:02But that was before this whole thing happened.
- 6:04I'm like, no grid girls!
- 6:06What good is a gridwalk?
- 6:08So we're going to meet in the middle here and talk about carding at the end.
- 6:11But race, you started in karting and have worked your way into cars.
- 6:15And then obviously Dr.
- 6:17T has been in cars and motorcycles and worked his way to karting.
- 6:19So let's talk about your background in motorsport.
- 6:22Yeah.
- 6:22So, um, you know, my name given being race, uh, it's been a family
- 6:26sport, second generation racer.
- 6:28Now, I believe I was three days old when I was first day at the racetrack.
- 6:32So it's been in my blood since what I eat, sleep and breathe every day since
- 6:37then Started racing at the age of Four got a go kart for my birthday that year.
- 6:41And, uh, we started practicing a lot and started actually competing
- 6:44when I was five, cause I was the youngest you could be to compete.
- 6:47So, uh, ran the kid cart ranks, which is, you know, four to eight years
- 6:51old, moved up to junior and cadet and, uh, won a few championships locally,
- 6:56started racing nationally, started winning some more and doing pretty well.
- 6:59And by the time I was 12 years old, I was in a race car full time.
- 7:02Uh, we started with legend cars.
- 7:04Started doing some circle track stuff, doing some road racing stuff in the
- 7:07winter with them with the, with the series they had together in Vegas, moved
- 7:11up from there, do the ASA speed trucks from there, ran super late models out
- 7:16at Irwindale Speedway in California, won NASCAR rookie of the year that year, our
- 7:20first year in the championship, won a few championships in that road racing the
- 7:24car as well as circle track racing it.
- 7:27And then, uh, when funds dried up with the family and, uh, I lost my camping world
- 7:31truck ride, I, uh, decided to go buy a dirt modified and start racing the dirt.
- 7:36Something I always wanted to do.
- 7:37My dad hated the mud, hated cleaning.
- 7:39So, uh, I went and bought one of those.
- 7:41I bought a clunker for, 000 and rebuilt the whole chassis by
- 7:46myself with my crew chief, Nick, we went racing for a few years.
- 7:50I got a, I got an opportunity to go back east and move to Mooresville and
- 7:54run with Ron Hornaday a little bit.
- 7:56And so I started learning a lot from Ron.
- 7:58Trying to again, still get my way into the NASCAR route, learned so much
- 8:03working with Ron Hornaday, not only about on track stuff, but setups and, and,
- 8:07uh, fabrication and things like that.
- 8:09And then, uh, after that kind of dried up, I came back to karting.
- 8:12I got an opportunity to race full time again as a factory driver, which I spent
- 8:16a lot of time doing as a kid, doing a lot of development work for other brands.
- 8:20And in that hiatus.
- 8:21Out of karting, I was doing a lot of, uh, R and D and design
- 8:24work for chassis manufacturers.
- 8:26So, that kind of dwindled into where we are now.
- 8:29Um, that ride fell through a little bit.
- 8:31From there, we had a, I had a lot of customers and, and, uh, a lot
- 8:34of people kind of looking to me for advice and where to go next.
- 8:37And they kind of followed my path.
- 8:39The next step was, was doing what we're doing now.
- 8:41And that's, that's race factory.
- 8:42So let me ask you this about the motorsport transition there.
- 8:45You know, it sounds, I don't want to make it sound like it's formulaic,
- 8:48but it's a similar story I've heard from other drivers, right?
- 8:51Karting and then, you know, early dirt car stuff and an oval and
- 8:54then, you know, trucks and the NASCAR and so on and online.
- 8:57What Why that path instead of road racing and potentially going into IMSA
- 9:01and GT cars or something like that.
- 9:03Is it just because of how we're structured in the States or is it just something you
- 9:08preferred from your family upbringing?
- 9:10So coming up through the ranks, uh, we already were starting to
- 9:12race legend cars and, and that was honestly what we could afford.
- 9:15I don't come from a lot of money, like a lot of racers sometimes do.
- 9:19I come from a very blue collar family.
- 9:21We've worked for what we had.
- 9:22We, nothing was ever handed to us.
- 9:24So, you know, most of this stuff, if we had to fabricate on it, my,
- 9:28my father's a very, very smart man when it comes to race cars, a lot
- 9:32of longtime fabrication background.
- 9:34So we have the tools, he already had a shop and whatnot.
- 9:37So.
- 9:38The legend car thing and the stock car route, not only financially
- 9:41made sense for us, but it was something we could completely do in
- 9:44house with some of the specs on the cars, fabrication was pretty easy.
- 9:49Uh, it's something I can learn.
- 9:50And if some, we actually had to, we always had a team with other
- 9:53drivers to help fund my racing.
- 9:55So before I got to drive, I was working and prepping other people's
- 9:58cars and then mine came dead last.
- 10:00Right.
- 10:00So.
- 10:01Um, and that's how we, we went racing.
- 10:02So that's at the time it's what we could afford because even, you know, I did a
- 10:05lot of testing in, uh, F2000 series and then Formula Renault, which is things
- 10:10like what Marco Andretti and a bunch of other IndyCar drivers came through.
- 10:14I was around that same timeframe.
- 10:16You know, when you got to spend 200 grand on a season and it's,
- 10:19it's not paid for, for you.
- 10:20It's, it's one of those things where we can go spend 50 race and
- 10:22legend cars, or we can go spend 200.
- 10:25And.
- 10:26We'd be out in a year.
- 10:27So it was really the only path we had.
- 10:29We didn't look into the sports car route because at the time I was at kind of a
- 10:32breaking point where, you know, to go run SCCA, you had to be 16 at the time still.
- 10:36And the ages hadn't dropped yet.
- 10:38So I was 12 years old and we're looking to take the next step and
- 10:41advance my career as fast as possible.
- 10:43And that was really.
- 10:44Financially, our only option.
- 10:46I didn't love it at first, to be 100 percent honest with you, I
- 10:48didn't like going around in circles.
- 10:50I practiced for two or three months before we raced, and when
- 10:53we finally raced, I was like, Okay, you know, this is a lot of fun.
- 10:56I'm having a good time.
- 10:57We're doing really well.
- 10:58And that was just the path we ended up taking, because it's
- 11:00something we could do in house.
- 11:02Again, it was something my father and I could completely do by ourselves,
- 11:06and it fit what we were able to do.
- 11:08This is just a curiosity question.
- 11:09Have you done any road racing at all?
- 11:11Yeah, so I did, um, I didn't race any formula car stuff.
- 11:14So I'm from California originally.
- 11:16And, uh, I grew up 10 minutes away from Willow Springs Raceway, which is
- 11:19a historic facility in the West coast.
- 11:21Um, closest racetrack to LA at the age of, uh, what was that?
- 11:2515, 16.
- 11:27I, uh, was a full time instructor.
- 11:29Um, I actually took some time away from high school to do that job.
- 11:33I went on independent study and was basically homeschooling myself for a while
- 11:37to go teach people how to drive race cars.
- 11:39So I got to drive.
- 11:40Any super car you could ever think of at a young age, um, was in a lot
- 11:44of formula cars, testing radicals, um, spec Ford racers, just anything
- 11:49you can put on a road course.
- 11:51I was either teaching or I was actually driving for some people.
- 11:55So my road racing experience actually racing cars is somewhat limited.
- 11:59I did, uh, some spec seven racing and SCCA.
- 12:03And then we had a series out at Willow Springs called the Southwest Superlates.
- 12:06It was actually circle track pavement race cars that were
- 12:09converted to road race setups.
- 12:10And we raced at Big Willow.
- 12:12Guys like Boris said would show up, Sheldon Creed.
- 12:15We had a lot of big names that popped in and out of that series when they
- 12:18were, you know, getting ready for a road race or something like that.
- 12:22That was a lot of fun.
- 12:22I won the championship twice in that.
- 12:24Current track record there and whatnot, and a few different
- 12:26classes at my home track.
- 12:28So that was.
- 12:29That was pretty much the sum of my road racing experience.
- 12:32Again, a lot of it was just miles around tracks.
- 12:34Yeah, no, that's pretty cool.
- 12:36So do you have a, do you have a favorite out of all those different,
- 12:39you know, disciplines there that you prefer one over the other?
- 12:43Ah, you know, I'd have to say my favorite car I've ever driven.
- 12:48To this day is a Trans Am car.
- 12:50It was hands down where I just felt at home.
- 12:53I, like I said, I have a lot of experience and a lot of different things.
- 12:56I drove some Porsches and some, you know, GT3, GT2 cars, some LMP cars.
- 13:01And what I felt at home most was, was the Trans Am stuff.
- 13:05Um, it was always what I was fastest in.
- 13:07Something more like that stock car.
- 13:09Ish background.
- 13:11It was kind of Trans Am is like the perfect mix between the two.
- 13:14Now you're talking, you're talking eighties, nineties, Trans Am cars
- 13:17or something more modern than that.
- 13:18Current, current TA1, TA2 cars.
- 13:21Yeah, that's, that's right in my wheelhouse.
- 13:23That's right.
- 13:23Where I feel like I've always belonged coming from cart.
- 13:26You can drive the cart so hard into a corner and it's so predictable
- 13:29and you get in, you get in some like a Porsche GT three cup car.
- 13:33And with such a small sidewall on the tire and such a stiff tire.
- 13:37It's not very predictable and it was okay to me.
- 13:41It was fun.
- 13:41It was a great time.
- 13:42They're fast.
- 13:43But, you know, I went faster in my 18, 000 stock car than a 250, 000 race car.
- 13:48So that, to me, was just cool.
- 13:49I'm a pretty gritty racer.
- 13:51I'm not about the flash or the wow factor of it.
- 13:54You know, if it turns a lap time around the racetrack, that's And, and
- 13:57I'm having a good time in the car.
- 13:58That's, that's all I can ask for.
- 14:00So that was my favorite for sure.
- 14:02So I'm sure our listeners wanna know, what do you drive on the street?
- 14:07? Oh, no, . Uh, I drive a 2000 , I drive a 2000 Chevy Chevy Express box truck.
- 14:14Uh, no.
- 14:14I have a, uh, mini Cooper s uh, that I rip around the streets.
- 14:18Uh, it's, it's a go-kart.
- 14:20You hear that folks?
- 14:21Front wheel drive.
- 14:23Front wheel drive.
- 14:24Yeah, if I could, listen, if I could put the engine in the trunk, I would.
- 14:29You should see, you should see him drive that thing too.
- 14:32Well, I won't go too deep on this, but it takes a special kind of driving line
- 14:36to go fast in a front wheel drive, but that's an argument for another episode.
- 14:39We happen to call it fun wheel drive around here a lot of the
- 14:42time, but you know, it's a whole, it's a debate for another time.
- 14:45So you came up through carting and I can empathize with that because I did a
- 14:50lot of carting when I was younger too.
- 14:52I did a lot of endurance carting as a matter of fact, and flying all
- 14:54over the country, running races, not to the same level that you were
- 14:58at more kind of ad hoc, you know, pretty amateur stuff, whatnot.
- 15:01So I will say it's not for me anymore because my back can't take it, especially
- 15:07being in the cart for three, four hours per stint, you know, stuff like that.
- 15:14But the, but the allure is still there.
- 15:15Right.
- 15:16And that's the, that's the fun part about how we all got together
- 15:18for this particular episode.
- 15:19Having us having just come off track for about an hour and then bumping into Dr.
- 15:24T in the pits, you know, working on your guys cart and all that.
- 15:28But we got to figure out how you guys met in the middle, how you guys, how
- 15:31the two of you got connected, you know, East coast, West coast here.
- 15:34So Dr.
- 15:34T, how did you get into carting?
- 15:36I have a kid.
- 15:38Right?
- 15:39So, yeah.
- 15:41It's kind of a funny story.
- 15:42My son, he sees the cars and the stuff in the garage and in the bikes and
- 15:46things and he's, you know, he was always talking about how, when can I race?
- 15:50When can I race?
- 15:50When can I race?
- 15:51His name is Anthony.
- 15:52Same as mine.
- 15:53So he's 14 now.
- 15:55He was 11 and we went out to pit race and they had an enduro.
- 16:01And it was in, it was the Thanksgiving Enduro.
- 16:04It was 42 degrees when we started, it was a two hour race and it was
- 16:1033 degrees when we finished it three hours later, because there was
- 16:14practice and all that kind of stuff.
- 16:15So we go and it was myself, a buddy of mine and Anthony.
- 16:18Anthony was 11.
- 16:20You needed to be.
- 16:21five feet tall and 13 years old to participate.
- 16:24He was 11 and four foot six.
- 16:26Okay.
- 16:27So the nice part about pit race back then is I'd been at pit race since they first
- 16:31paved it the first time, 20 years ago.
- 16:33So we knew everybody there.
- 16:34So I walk in and the girl says, you know, he, he can't race.
- 16:37I said, and I asked for Mike, the guy who was there at the time.
- 16:39And he walks, I was like, Hey, Dr.
- 16:40T what's up?
- 16:41He said, if you'd like to race, he said, do you think you can do it?
- 16:43I said, yeah, I think you can.
- 16:45Let's send him out.
- 16:46Do a couple laps if you think he's unsafe or you don't think it's
- 16:49appropriate, you know, bring him in.
- 16:50I, I would never put him in harm's way, obviously, but I
- 16:53wanted them to be cool with it.
- 16:54So, we have yo I don't know if you know what yoga blocks are.
- 16:57Yoga blocks are like a hard foam block.
- 17:00It looks like a brick.
- 17:01We have them Velcroed to his shoes, okay?
- 17:04He can barely see over the steering wheel.
- 17:06He goes out there.
- 17:07Long story short, the kid Is going out and he came in early
- 17:11because his hands were freezing.
- 17:12We had to pry him off the steering wheel because it was so cold.
- 17:14The first time we didn't know anything about wearing latex gloves
- 17:18underneath your gloves, right?
- 17:19Raise.
- 17:19If it's cold to be able to keep your hand from freezing.
- 17:22I didn't know anything.
- 17:23We didn't know anything about car zero.
- 17:24I'd never been in a car.
- 17:25So we come in the race and there's four national level carters there in
- 17:29the race and the first team won There was three people on the team was 45
- 17:33guys a lot of older guys my age, right?
- 17:35And uh, there's these four national level carters young guys and they
- 17:38win And they the one kid gets the the fast lap and i'm standing there and
- 17:42i'm just kind of thinking looking at stuff and I go Hey who had said who
- 17:46had second fast lap and the guy goes?
- 17:48Hey, dr.
- 17:48T.
- 17:49Congratulations.
- 17:49It was you I went.
- 17:50Nope So my son had second fast lap the first time in a large cart
- 17:54in a, in a, in a cart basically.
- 17:56And, uh, as we're watching the race before that happened, this guy walks up
- 18:00to me and he's standing right beside me.
- 18:02He doesn't say hello, doesn't say anything.
- 18:03He just goes, uh, is that your kid out there?
- 18:06And I look back out and on the track and him watching, I'm like, yeah.
- 18:10He pats me on the shoulder and, and says, this is gonna be
- 18:13expensive and walks away . Yeah.
- 18:16Swear to God.
- 18:17Right.
- 18:17So.
- 18:18The funny part about that is his son drives for us now, and his name's
- 18:22Scott Glace, who's a good friend of Race Factory and of ours personally.
- 18:27So, he wasn't kidding, by the way, four years ago, that we would be up to our
- 18:32necks in what has become So where's the connection between you and Race Liberante?
- 18:38So what we got to, we got to use your last name to not get people confused.
- 18:41Clearly, I clearly, I do not have the pedigree.
- 18:45I moved out to Mooresville for a few years and then ended up moving up to Pittsburgh.
- 18:53And, um, the team I was driving with previously was based
- 18:56out of Erie, Pennsylvania.
- 18:57So it was kind of a good meal of grounds, my girlfriend's from Pittsburgh.
- 18:59So it was kind of making sense why I should relocate to that area.
- 19:04So I actually started coaching and training Dr.
- 19:06T and his son, Anthony, and they became good friends and
- 19:10customers of mine for about a year.
- 19:12He kind of found out I, I, uh, I lost my ride with this other, other brand I
- 19:17was on, or, you know, we went separate ways and, um, um, He was looking at
- 19:21buying a new chassis and, and a lot, like I said, a lot of people kind of
- 19:25at, especially at our local track, look to me for advice on what's next.
- 19:28What should I get?
- 19:29What should I be on?
- 19:30What setup should I be running?
- 19:32So when he came to me with that, I said, well, if you're going to
- 19:35buy one because of me, I'm thinking of doing something different.
- 19:39And he goes, okay, well, I'm going to do what you're doing.
- 19:42What are you doing?
- 19:42And I go, well, I can't tell you I'm in talks with some
- 19:45investors and things like that.
- 19:46And he goes, BS.
- 19:49Talk to me about it.
- 19:50And I'm like, okay, so we get to talking and he's, you know, I'd tell him kind
- 19:54of where we want to go with the brand and, and how I want to differentiate
- 19:58ourselves from other carding brands and really other brands in motor sports
- 20:02in general, bring kind of like a young flair to it, and he was all about it.
- 20:06The rest so far is, is it's not in history because it's still being
- 20:09written, but then that was it from there.
- 20:11We got, we put our heads down, went to work and here we are.
- 20:14What are we now in four or five months later?
- 20:17Since we've bridged that gap now, let's talk about Race Factory USA.
- 20:21And for our listeners out there, you can learn more about this
- 20:23by visiting racefactoryusa.
- 20:25com.
- 20:26What makes your carts special?
- 20:28What's so different about them?
- 20:30So to be a hundred percent honest, carts nowadays, we've all pretty
- 20:33much found what works in a go kart.
- 20:36The differences on our chassis, it looks aesthetics wise, we
- 20:38give, give different options.
- 20:40So there's, you know, go karts are as simple as they look.
- 20:43They're very, very complex.
- 20:44Um, the materials we use for the metals are all custom made for go karts.
- 20:49It's not just some off the rack tubing you get at your local patent steel or whatever
- 20:53steel supplier you've got locally.
- 20:55This is all special blended material, all chromoly steel.
- 20:58So our blends of material are a little different.
- 21:00Our chassis design is a little unique, but the biggest differentiator.
- 21:04From our brand to other brands is really our marketing approach.
- 21:08Uh, is it's completely different.
- 21:09We're trying to build a lifestyle brand race factory.
- 21:12Isn't just a carding company.
- 21:13In fact, we're in talks with partnering with many different teams for different
- 21:18avenues outside of carding for these kids to grow into eventually when
- 21:22it time to move up to cars, the marketing approach for us is huge.
- 21:26We want to be.
- 21:27For lack of better terms, the hoonigan of carting, what, what really turned the
- 21:31drifting market completely into what it is today is the young marketing behind
- 21:37it, you know, making it all interesting, making all exciting and really boosting
- 21:41that up the lifestyle behind motor sports.
- 21:43Carting is the purest form of motor sports.
- 21:46There is hands down because it's so simple and showcasing that
- 21:50is what we really wanted to do.
- 21:51There's not another cart brand in the world that does the marketing that we do.
- 21:55To try and grow the sport of karting, motorsports in general, um, this
- 21:59is a, this is the perfect gateway.
- 22:01If you look at the Indy lineup, actually right now, the entry list for every
- 22:05race this year, every single IndyCar driver race go karts growing up.
- 22:09Every single entrant.
- 22:10So this is really the start of a motor sports career is in the carting ranks.
- 22:14And it's actually one of the cheapest avenues of, of racing in general,
- 22:18and something you can do out of the back of your pickup truck.
- 22:21I mean, I started my first business out of a storage unit.
- 22:24I was working on people's go karts.
- 22:26You can do this with nothing, you know, a hundred dollars
- 22:28in tools from Harbor Freight.
- 22:29It's something we want to showcase more than anything.
- 22:32Our, our go kart does have some pretty cool options on it.
- 22:34You can choose between aluminum components or magnesium components, which is standard
- 22:39on most go karts nowadays, but we give our customers the option, depending on
- 22:42their budget, depending on what they're planning on running, what they're
- 22:45planning on doing, and we're in process to give our customers set up manuals.
- 22:49So that way, you know, they.
- 22:50They've got all the tools necessary to go do the best they
- 22:53possibly can out of the box.
- 22:55And, uh, we're one of the only companies in the country right now that will ship
- 22:59you a race ready, go cart to your door in a crate, most go carts you have to buy.
- 23:02They come in a box, all unassembled, no instruction manual, no nothing.
- 23:06And you have to assemble it and kind of figure it out.
- 23:08So a lot of people motorsports because they're afraid to ask questions.
- 23:13They don't know what they're doing.
- 23:15So on and so forth.
- 23:16There's many different reasons.
- 23:17And we're trying to give our customers every tool they need to go be successful
- 23:21in the marketing behind it, to help their careers out in the future.
- 23:24So let's talk about the carding market space itself.
- 23:26I mean, for the longest time, at least, you know, in my generation,
- 23:30most of the cars were European, right?
- 23:31With either whatever motor you could put in a Japanese or American, from
- 23:35what I understand race factory, everything's been constructed
- 23:38and designed here in the States.
- 23:39And that makes it also a little bit more unique than your typical,
- 23:42you know, Soty card or anything else that might be out there.
- 23:45So right now we're actually, our, our products are made, um, in Italy
- 23:49and Eastern Europe, but they are all designed for our market here.
- 23:52Our tires, our tracks, our engine packages, our, our weights, um, the
- 23:57weight we have to run, our minimum weight is different than Europe.
- 23:59Everything is designed for our, our form of carting here.
- 24:02We're working on actually producing product in the United States.
- 24:06Uh, unfortunately, you know, with The way things are right now, it's
- 24:09very difficult, but it's something that we look to roll out in 2021.
- 24:13But yeah, the big differentiator is we design everything for our
- 24:17market, not the European market.
- 24:19Um, which is, you know, it doesn't sound like much different, but when
- 24:21you're on a completely different tire, Completely different engine package.
- 24:25Uh, the asphalt construction is even different here compared to Europe,
- 24:29as well as the weight of the class.
- 24:31It makes it, it makes a big difference when we're just talking
- 24:33about a different blend of material or a different, you know, two
- 24:36millimeters here, two millimeters there, because everything's right.
- 24:38It's not a car.
- 24:39It's all shrunk down.
- 24:40So a mil or two is, is all it takes to make or break it.
- 24:44Let me be relatively clear about what's happening here.
- 24:47I have a career.
- 24:49I don't need another career.
- 24:50I don't need another business.
- 24:51So my point being, and one kid's enough to be honest with you, but my point
- 24:56being no more kids, but the point being, you know, when, when race and
- 25:00I started talking about this, we, we have a natural affinity for each other.
- 25:04Number one, meaning that.
- 25:06Like, we're always jabbing each other.
- 25:07We're always like, it's, we, we've become friends.
- 25:10And, and, and that's a, that's a really wonderful thing from my perspective.
- 25:14He may think otherwise, I'm not sure anyway.
- 25:17So point being this guy's the real deal.
- 25:20That's the reason I did this when he talks about their
- 25:23design here, that he does that.
- 25:25I got involved with this because of the gentleman that we're talking
- 25:29to now and his ability to do the things that he's talking about.
- 25:32Uh, I didn't want to own a cart company.
- 25:34I didn't, I mean, I'm loving what we're doing now, but you know what I'm saying?
- 25:37Like, if you got a guy that's really good at this stuff, this becomes an option and
- 25:41it became an option for us to do this.
- 25:44What I've always been good at in my career, and I've owned 10 offices in
- 25:47six states, I've owned other companies and other things, I've always been
- 25:51exceptionally good at finding good people.
- 25:53You got to go through a lot of them, but you, when you find the right people,
- 25:57that's what makes the company great.
- 25:59So I, I, you know, kudos and credit.
- 26:03To my friend and partner race for being able to do the things that he does because
- 26:07he teaches me every day Right, and I think it's funny i've been practicing
- 26:11for 23 years and i'm 53 years old He's been in his career for 21 years and
- 26:16he's 25 So, you know what i'm saying?
- 26:19It's it's a very interesting.
- 26:21Uh, It's a very interesting thing that we do together.
- 26:24This teamwork that we have is very, very special.
- 26:27I believe he is truly the man when it comes to these things.
- 26:30I am every day.
- 26:32He just blows me away.
- 26:34His knowledge base and what we're able to do.
- 26:36I do a lot.
- 26:36I ask him a lot.
- 26:37You sure this is going to work?
- 26:39And he says, yes.
- 26:39And I, now I trust him because in the beginning, when we're, when we're
- 26:43ordering all this stuff, because the designs are his, The, the types
- 26:48of metal and how it's put together.
- 26:51And when he's taught, when he talks about it's built for us, it is built for us.
- 26:55There's no doubt.
- 26:56I, he talks about things like he has an engineering degree.
- 26:59I just wanted to put that out there that this guy's the real deal.
- 27:02And I barely have my high school diploma.
- 27:05I knew that too.
- 27:06I don't bring that up.
- 27:08I was expecting him fully to make a whole analogy about you being
- 27:11a truffle and he was the dog or pig sniffing it out or something,
- 27:14but we'll leave that where it is.
- 27:15At any rate, so this is really cool, actually.
- 27:19And I mean, and I'm in awe of what you guys are doing because to me,
- 27:23having come up through carding at a much, you know, many, many years
- 27:27ago, It was always the same thing.
- 27:29It was always the same carts.
- 27:30It was the same engine packages.
- 27:31You knew when you got a dog though, when it was built out of full weight steel and
- 27:35you're like, what the hell is this thing that they drug out of the, you know, the
- 27:37back alley, but you know, this is cool.
- 27:40And I got to see your guys cart up close.
- 27:41And I did notice that there are some things that are unique.
- 27:43And I think those probably come from your experience of racing to say,
- 27:46you know, Yeah, this didn't work.
- 27:48I didn't like the way this worked when, you know, I was running somebody
- 27:50else's car or somebody else's chassis.
- 27:52So I definitely saw that when I had eyes on and I'm sure other people probably
- 27:56will pick up on that too, that it's, it's not the same old run of the mill
- 28:00go cart that you're used to, but I want to switch the topic a little bit.
- 28:04And I want to talk about two, two things, one safety and two, how you engage and
- 28:11cultivate the younger generations getting into carts, especially girls, right?
- 28:15So, cause I got two daughters, but we'll get to that in a minute.
- 28:17So let's first talk about safety because when you're in a cart as a kid, right?
- 28:23Your, your dad or your mom puts you in one for the first time.
- 28:25Chances are, uh, you're They're the, the go-karts at the beach or you know,
- 28:29kind of like, it's like, yeah, it's like a lawnmower, you know, barely
- 28:32better than a lawnmower engine.
- 28:34And the things heavy as all get out and it's wrapped in bumpers and
- 28:37cushions and, you know, and styrofoam and everything else you can think of.
- 28:41So you get a taste of that thrill, of that speed and all that, but it's not the same.
- 28:45And as you move up in carting, they get faster and faster and faster.
- 28:48And you go from direct drives to multi-speed automatics, to shifter
- 28:52carts, to ethanol, to, to whatever.
- 28:54I mean, you know.
- 28:55Whatever you got out there.
- 28:56I ran mixed class methanol two stroke the whole nine yards, right?
- 28:59But every time you start adding speed, it gets more dangerous and
- 29:03you're not really strapped into a car.
- 29:04You don't have a harness.
- 29:06You don't have a Hans like we do in the cars.
- 29:07It really isn't a roll cage.
- 29:09So what do you guys do in terms of safety?
- 29:12So, the carding industry, and to give, to give the carding industry credit
- 29:17and the FIA, CIK, um, rules that we use from the Europeans, uh, a lot
- 29:22of credit, they, uh, they, they have done a lot with safety, uh, over the
- 29:26years, you know, so carding, when it started out, there was no bodywork.
- 29:29It was a tube frame, all put together, there's nothing there, open wheel.
- 29:32Then they went to Nerf bars, which were just metal bars that kind
- 29:35of stuck out towards the tires.
- 29:37And it was a little harder to make wheel to wheel contact.
- 29:39And then through the 90s and up till now, we have full plastic
- 29:43bodywork around the whole go kart.
- 29:45Now we don't have the bumper system that goes around the tires and wraps
- 29:48all the way around the go kart.
- 29:50We have plastic full width rear bumpers that keep a lot of
- 29:53people from going on their lid.
- 29:54Back in the day, actually, one of the things I was taught when I was a 14
- 29:58year old kid was how to put somebody on their lid if they disrespected
- 30:01you on track, and that was a thing.
- 30:02I mean, people could make you flip.
- 30:04So, that was with the metal rear bumper, that was very narrow.
- 30:07Uh, you would ride over the top of people all the time.
- 30:10The new plastic bodywork keeps it more bumper to bumper as long, you
- 30:14know, as far as on track contact.
- 30:16And then, uh, the suits, the, the racing suits, uh, I work closely
- 30:20with a company called liquid sky manufacturers, skydiving suits as well.
- 30:23They have material that if for some reason you do get ejected from the
- 30:26go cart and you're sliding on the pavement, it slides, it doesn't tear.
- 30:30So we don't allow fireproof suits and carting anymore because they
- 30:33would just tear and it would rip your skin up and things like that.
- 30:36So the suits now slide on the.
- 30:38on the asphalt much better if you do for some reason end up
- 30:40upside down or on your lid.
- 30:42Nothing really stops somebody from driving it themselves into a barrier,
- 30:45but uh, some of the insurance companies have mandated different things.
- 30:49You know, we, like our home track, we have huge bags full of hay, I think
- 30:54they are, that You know, worst case scenario, you plow into one of those.
- 30:57You might bend the go kart up, but you know, honestly, I haven't
- 31:00seen a, an ambulance ride out of cart track in about, Hmm.
- 31:04I mean, I see one every seven or eight months and I, I'm going
- 31:06to racetrack every weekend.
- 31:07So the safety of the sport.
- 31:09Yeah.
- 31:10Although it's not the safest thing in the world, cause you're right.
- 31:12You're not strapped in.
- 31:12There's no seat belts and it's actually safer that we don't have
- 31:15seat belts because you do need to be able to roll out of a go kart.
- 31:17If you do end up.
- 31:18upside down or something like that.
- 31:20You know, it's still not nearly as dangerous as a sport like
- 31:22motocross or even, you know, soccer.
- 31:24At some point I've seen more injuries on, in ball sports.
- 31:27And then I do in carting most of the time, the safety gear, the helmets, you
- 31:31know, uh, Arai, Stilo, some of these other helmet companies that we all use
- 31:35in race cars have done so much for the carting world on their carting helmets
- 31:38as well for impact and things like that.
- 31:40So the innovation of safety has really.
- 31:43Really gotten so much better.
- 31:45Even in the last five years for carting, we have pushback
- 31:48bumper systems now on the front.
- 31:49So that way you do slam into somebody.
- 31:52It pushes your bumper back instead of all that force going into
- 31:55the next guy in front of you.
- 31:57So yeah, although it's not necessarily, I guess, the safest sport you could ever do.
- 32:01It is leaps and bounds from what it used to be, and it is becoming
- 32:05safer and safer every weekend with everybody working together to to
- 32:08innovate the safety side of things.
- 32:10Thanks.
- 32:10And Dr.
- 32:11T, I want to direct this one at you because I know you're
- 32:14a chiropractor if I recall.
- 32:15So you can correct me if I'm wrong.
- 32:17You know, head and neck restraint is a big thing for us in road racing.
- 32:20So we talk all the time about Hans, Simpson hybrids, all sorts of systems
- 32:24that try to keep the driver from basically having a whiplash type incident that would
- 32:30cause them, you know, either to get killed like Dale Earnhardt as an example, or to
- 32:34suffer severe injury due to an impact or something going on inside the vehicle.
- 32:39Um, Now, having been in plenty of cart races where I've been nailed by
- 32:43somebody and you get that sudden either jolt forward or maybe somebody dropped
- 32:47anchor in front of you and you just couldn't avoid them, or maybe you had
- 32:50to go off road to avoid an accident.
- 32:52There's always that just severe jostling.
- 32:54You just don't have anything.
- 32:56A number one, what, what are some things you can do maybe to help either
- 33:01subside the pain, maybe some PT, you know, from your perspective, or is
- 33:05there some sort of system, something similar to a Simpson hybrid that
- 33:09would work in a carding scenario?
- 33:11The, you know, the issue that we had, unfortunately with Dale was
- 33:14that in a frontal collision of, of significant impact, the head, think
- 33:19of your head as a bowling ball, right.
- 33:21On a, on, on a stock.
- 33:23Uh, attached to the rest of your body.
- 33:25And you know, an object in motion stays in motion until acted
- 33:28on by another force, right?
- 33:29So, the head kept moving forward.
- 33:31The belts that hold the upper torso, the five point belts, uh, unfortunately
- 33:37did their job and held him in the seat.
- 33:39The head kept accelerating forward where the torso stayed where it was.
- 33:43And it resulted in what was called a basilar skull fracture.
- 33:46And what happens is that the bottom of the skull ripped out, unfortunately,
- 33:50and he was killed instantly, which was, which was a, uh, which was a good
- 33:55thing in those types of incidences.
- 33:57In carding, because we're not restrained, those types of things, I can't say can't,
- 34:02but there's a very, very, very, very Small chance of anything like that could occur.
- 34:07The whiplash is definitely something that can occur.
- 34:10And because of that, you've seen the neck braces that people use,
- 34:15like the EVS, just the foam.
- 34:17The foam ones are great.
- 34:19The problem with the foam ones is that they limit your, range of motion as far
- 34:23as when you're in the cart, if you're looking side to side or what you're doing.
- 34:26But the idea is to stabilize the helmet onto the shoulders such that you don't
- 34:31get large movements forward, backwards, and actually in any range of motion also
- 34:36to an impact on the top, pushing down can cause what's called a, uh, a maximum
- 34:42compression, either fracture or injury.
- 34:45But I mean, you literally have to land on your head, straight
- 34:48on your head for that to happen.
- 34:49So, possible.
- 34:50Again, possible.
- 34:51Unlikely.
- 34:52The Simpson hybrid system, you know, that's, it's actually not a bad thing.
- 34:56People don't use them in carding because I think they don't see
- 34:59the need for them necessarily.
- 35:00When that first came out, I was a little skeptical to be honest as to, and a lot of
- 35:04guys use them in the ride alongs, right?
- 35:06When they're doing the, when they're teaching.
- 35:08And you may actually do that, do that yourself.
- 35:10They're still with a three point ballot, like in a passenger car, I have my doubts.
- 35:15I know it's been tested.
- 35:16I know it's better than nothing.
- 35:18And maybe that's the best we can do in that scenario.
- 35:21In carting, maybe that's something that could be, I
- 35:24mean, definitely could be used.
- 35:25I don't know that it's necessary.
- 35:27I think it's kind of an overkill based upon the other things
- 35:29that we're already using.
- 35:30Because you just, you just don't get those forward acceleration injuries.
- 35:35The, where the skull is moving in the torso is because,
- 35:38you know, you get hit you.
- 35:39If you go to the front of the go-kart, you're going outta the
- 35:42front of the go-Kart , you know?
- 35:44Now I've never seen that, but you know, I've seen it.
- 35:46My son shows it on me and on YouTube all the time.
- 35:48So, uh, I don't know if that was from years ago or whatever it's from, but
- 35:52he's like, Hey dad, look at this.
- 35:53I'm like, don't let your mother see that.
- 35:54Whatever you.
- 35:55Because that's a bad idea.
- 35:57So what you said, I think that, uh, I think there's a place for all of that.
- 36:00I think that what we have now, you know, the, the motocross ones are
- 36:03interesting, not to go on, drone on about this, but the motocross ones
- 36:06are interesting because they have a piece that goes down the back and in
- 36:09the front of the, of the chest, right?
- 36:11The torso, front and back of the torso, which limits, uh,
- 36:14posterior and anterior movement.
- 36:16But then again, you can't really use it because I have one.
- 36:19Safety is incredibly important to me.
- 36:20I'm 14, you know, my son's 14.
- 36:23It's incredibly important to him as well.
- 36:24But there's, I always say there's two kinds of people.
- 36:26There's people with kids and people without kids.
- 36:28And I had no, I didn't have my son until I was 40.
- 36:31And you just don't get it until you have a child and it's nothing against
- 36:36people who don't have children.
- 36:37I think about that myself every day, but whether, whether this was a good
- 36:41idea or not, you know what I'm saying?
- 36:45To add to what he's saying though, the safety wise, we do have Liat braces,
- 36:50which are used highly in motocross, basically the same neck restraint
- 36:53you see on, in motocross riders.
- 36:55They make a mimic product for carding, uh, Liat, EVS, Alpine
- 37:00Stars, the list goes on and on.
- 37:01They all make a neck brace to where your head can only go
- 37:04so far down and so far back.
- 37:06It's not mandatory.
- 37:07Uh, the national level, I mean, personally, I don't wear a neck support.
- 37:11I like being free to kind of move around.
- 37:15But he should.
- 37:16I know, and you know, it's, it's funny you guys bring that up because I, I had a
- 37:20Sparco one because I'm a Sparco fan boy.
- 37:22So, you know, I had the big thick one designed for cars and that was great
- 37:25for carting because it was a little extra, you know, a little bit of
- 37:29extra thickness underneath my helmet, which means I didn't move that much.
- 37:32But what's funny is in the car world, those neck braces or neck
- 37:37collars or whatever you want to call them, they're actually seen
- 37:39as no good, at least in our world.
- 37:41They They will not pass muster.
- 37:43So you're forced to either use a Hans or something like a Simpson hybrid.
- 37:47So, yeah, but it's, it's interesting to see the overlap there, what works and
- 37:50what doesn't let's talk just very quickly from your professional perspective, what
- 37:54are some things you can do as a Carter from a, from a physical perspective,
- 37:58either to train and get ready for a race or to help ease the pain after a race?
- 38:03Like in your neck, your back, things like that.
- 38:05If you were in an incident or just the physical conditioning, you
- 38:07need to, you know, not be overly bruised, damaged after a race.
- 38:13You can't be too prepared for carding.
- 38:15Uh, especially as like myself being older, cardio is incredibly
- 38:19important, but it's, it's more overall.
- 38:22muscular health, if that makes sense.
- 38:24It's tough to be squishy in the cart.
- 38:26You know, I mean, uh, bigger guys will have problems with, uh, ribs specifically,
- 38:30especially when you're trying to learn to drive the cart, it becomes really,
- 38:33I mean, you guys know what I'm talking about, but for anyone who's listening,
- 38:35it becomes really hard when you're being thrown left and right all the time.
- 38:38So it's usually about the ribs and torso.
- 38:40You got to have, I know this isn't the question, but the first time
- 38:44I ever drove a cart, it was a KT 100 and this was four or five years
- 38:47ago and I didn't have a rib vest.
- 38:50So that rib was broken, that day.
- 38:52That was fun.
- 38:53And uh, there's a whole story that goes with that.
- 38:55Race knows it, I'm not gonna tell it here, but general conditioning
- 38:58is incredibly important.
- 39:00I'm not a big guy with uh, ibuprofen and those types of things, but you
- 39:04gotta be rested, you have to drink your water, eat well, because it's so fast.
- 39:09And when I say fast, I don't necessarily mean we're going 100 miles an hour.
- 39:13You may only be going 30 miles an hour, but the transitions between
- 39:16rights and lefts and looking ahead and the things that you're doing that
- 39:19Ray alluded to earlier is happening so quickly that it's very taxing.
- 39:23And if you're tired, just like any sport, you can't perform well.
- 39:26You may be sore, and if you're sore, it's, you know, it's ice and
- 39:30ibuprofen, to be honest with you.
- 39:31You know, we can talk to a bunch of our guys, just the older guys, the
- 39:35young, the younger kids don't, they don't, they're like rubber bands.
- 39:38It doesn't robber.
- 39:39Yeah, exactly.
- 39:40Yeah.
- 39:41But that's, uh, get your, get your rest.
- 39:43Just all the things your mom told you, right.
- 39:45Get your rest, eat well, be hydrated for sure.
- 39:48And come ready to pay attention to what's going on.
- 39:51My other question goes to race in that, you know, rubbing is
- 39:54racing, but in carding, sometimes it's like, do you really have to?
- 39:59Yes.
- 40:01You know, it is racing.
- 40:03It's, uh, you know, you can ask anybody at the car track.
- 40:05I'm not the cleanest guy out there, you know, whatever got to get the job done.
- 40:08But honestly, the wheel to wheel action in carting is, is insane.
- 40:13You know, rubbing doesn't really work for racing and open wheel cars.
- 40:16Um, and it, it hardly works in go karting.
- 40:18You know, you see a little bit of bump and run here and there, kind of like
- 40:21you would see at a stock car track.
- 40:23Most of the time, a lot of drivers have a lot of respect
- 40:25for one another here and there.
- 40:27Yeah.
- 40:27People get a little rowdy, you get a little pissed off on track and you, uh,
- 40:31you know, you reflect that in the guy in front of you sometimes or the guy you're
- 40:33battling with, but it's not a necessity.
- 40:36Absolutely not.
- 40:37For the most part though, a lot of drivers nowadays, we have a lot of
- 40:40respect for the safety side of things.
- 40:41Like we're talking about keeping each other safe, not
- 40:45trying to hurt one another.
- 40:46As a sport, it's evolved to where, you know, in the, in the mid early two
- 40:50thousands in the era, I really grew up.
- 40:52You know, as a sponge soaking up information from people I looked up to
- 40:56in the sport or something like that, dirty driving was kind of normal.
- 40:59They allowed you to race hard and that everybody had to
- 41:02go off of a respect basis.
- 41:03Nowadays, we have a lot of rules in place that, you know, you can't use
- 41:08the other guy's bumper in front of you to get by him and things like that.
- 41:11Our national sanctioning bodies actually have two cameras on every
- 41:14corner of the racetrack, and there's actual marshals from IndyCar.
- 41:18These people are hired from IndyCar to come marshal the races, and they
- 41:21actually call penalties to rough driving.
- 41:24So there's a lot of rules in place.
- 41:25There's a lot more respect at the racetrack, on the racetrack, and off
- 41:29the racetrack from drivers nowadays.
- 41:31So dirty driving is kind of Becoming a thing of the past.
- 41:34A lot of people are not only forced to race clean, but choose
- 41:37to race a lot cleaner now.
- 41:38And it's funny you mentioned that because, you know, every time I get back in a
- 41:41cart and I do enjoy it, I find myself, and I've had some other drivers say
- 41:46this too, that, you know, have kind of come up and come away from carting.
- 41:49They go, man, I've gotten slow in a cart because the driving
- 41:52style is totally different.
- 41:53You got to use your body to kind of get them to rotate and stuff like that.
- 41:56But you realize you've gotten smoother and you're a lot more strategic.
- 42:00Jake.
- 42:00Like I'm always looking way ahead.
- 42:02I'm planning out my move, looking for somebody else's mistake and they're
- 42:05driving while I have time to catch up to them because it's not like
- 42:08a car where it's like, well, he's in a Miata and I'm in a Corvette.
- 42:11So this is going to take all about a half a turn for me to execute this pass.
- 42:15I think when I was younger, it was way more tactical.
- 42:18It was like, I got to take this guy out.
- 42:19I got to get him out of my way.
- 42:20It's like playing Mario cart, you know, for lack of a better way to put it.
- 42:24But.
- 42:24It's, it's just kind of funny.
- 42:26I think the maturation process of a driver and what you, what you take from
- 42:30every sport and what you bring back to it when you're jumping from disciplines.
- 42:34So did you see that as well when you moved from karting to stock
- 42:37karting, et cetera, or was it kind of just a natural progression
- 42:40rather than a learn and bring back?
- 42:42Like I said, I was raised in a way that at the racetrack to drive with respect
- 42:46and race people how you want to be raced.
- 42:48Now, again, if somebody raced you the way you don't want to
- 42:50be raced, you return the favor.
- 42:52Um, but through my racing career that the stock car world, I mean, those guys
- 42:57will flat out put you in the wall when there's 10 grand to win on the line.
- 42:59You know what I mean?
- 43:00Because, you know, people race like we did.
- 43:02We raced paycheck to paycheck every night.
- 43:05So some people rely on that gas money to get home and it's their
- 43:08livelihood right on the line out there.
- 43:10So I can't explain what happens when the helmet goes on necessarily some days.
- 43:14I just, I almost forget sometimes when I'm pissed off and I'm,
- 43:18you know, that extra focused.
- 43:19I kind of forget about the race once in a while, but, Growing up, yes, the,
- 43:24everything I learned in karting helped me excel even further, um, in any of the next
- 43:29steps I took in my racing career, because I already had the fundamentals down.
- 43:32The karting really teaches you the fundamentals of racing, the race craft.
- 43:36Like you said, line selection, where you're looking on the racetrack,
- 43:39that's a huge one looking way ahead.
- 43:40A lot of people look at the hood pins.
- 43:42That's, that's a common.
- 43:43Thing that people look right in front of them and they don't make the right
- 43:46decisions on the racetrack due to that, not looking ahead and being prepared.
- 43:49But you learn all these things at such a young age and carding, and
- 43:52it's almost ingrained in your brain.
- 43:54Like I try and teach these young kids this, and it's, it's such second nature
- 43:57to me now, because I, you know, like I said, I've been doing this my whole
- 44:00life, I don't think about looking ahead.
- 44:02I don't think about telling somebody to look ahead all the time because.
- 44:06It's just in my nature now.
- 44:07It's just something I do.
- 44:09You know what I mean?
- 44:09So growing up in carting, I've trained a lot of racers that started in cars.
- 44:13And I've trained a lot of kids that went from carts to cars.
- 44:16And every single time I can tell when a kid came from carting first, because he
- 44:19knows the fundamentals of motor sports from carting, the racing's closer.
- 44:23Everything's happening much faster.
- 44:25You can talk to any formula one driver.
- 44:27They'll all tell you the best training tool shifter cart,
- 44:30because everything happens.
- 44:32Now, now, now, now, now there's no second to breathe.
- 44:35There's no second to stop and think unlike a race car track.
- 44:38Sometimes you have, you know, a place like mid Ohio, you're on
- 44:40the backstretch for 15 seconds.
- 44:42You got plenty of time to take a drink, do whatever, right?
- 44:45Carding our longest straightaway.
- 44:47We're on it for six or seven seconds.
- 44:49And most of the times in a shifter cart, you're banging gears the
- 44:51whole way down the stretch.
- 44:52So.
- 44:53Everything happens much quicker.
- 44:55Your hand eye coordination gets better.
- 44:56There's just so many benefits to the karting side of things.
- 45:00You know, I actually work with James Hinchcliffe once in a while, Connor
- 45:03Daly, they all come out and still, during the whole, uh, pandemic when
- 45:06racing was shut down, you saw all these IndyCar drivers back in go karts to
- 45:10work on their hand eye coordination.
- 45:12Continuously.
- 45:13It is still a, it's a strong training tool.
- 45:16It's just, it's a strong, it's a great learning tool for young
- 45:20racers that are looking to progress into something different.
- 45:23It's even good for older racers that maybe, you know, do SCCA club events.
- 45:28Or track days or whatever to get in a go kart because they can learn so much
- 45:32that will just do nothing but help them in their, in their racing careers.
- 45:36I do think though, you're right.
- 45:37Racecraft is a big one and traffic management is another one and, and, and
- 45:41dealing with cars in close proximity, it all translates to, you know, bigger
- 45:45cars and other forms of motorsport.
- 45:47I think though, what gets lost in translation is the physics, is the weight
- 45:51transfer, actual suspension, right?
- 45:53Because a cart and a car, nothing alike.
- 45:56in the same corner at the same, nearly the same speed.
- 46:00Let's say you could do 50 mile an hour in a shifter cart around a slow corner.
- 46:03You do the same in a Miata.
- 46:04They're nothing like each other at that same speed.
- 46:07You know what I mean?
- 46:09So it's, so it's kind of interesting fundamentals or otherwise you still have
- 46:12to relearn every discipline you move to.
- 46:14You're always, you're always building.
- 46:16So I just wanted to kind of reinforce that point that, you know, We're always
- 46:20learning and even though you know one discipline doesn't necessarily
- 46:23mean you know all of them, right?
- 46:24So it's always good to branch out and learn new things The funny part about
- 46:29that is I was never in a cart until anthony decided he wanted to do coding
- 46:33and we did that So, you know, I was used to doing relatively well, right?
- 46:38So I had a natural affinity for for driving things So carding
- 46:43Oh, man, this is gonna be easy.
- 46:45I get in the car, I'm like, Wham!
- 46:47Eighteenth.
- 46:48Wait a minute!
- 46:49Like, what?
- 46:50How did that happen?
- 46:51And, and, Race loves to point out, Stop driving it like a goddamn car.
- 46:57Because that's what's ingrained in me.
- 46:59Right?
- 46:59So I, you know, I said, I say this all the time.
- 47:03I, and I even have, this is one of my, one of the quote, the quote for me
- 47:06on the website is that I, coming from cars, I didn't realize what it takes to
- 47:11be able to succeed, drive pilots, you know, at any level of carding, not to
- 47:18mention the highest levels of carding.
- 47:19It's a true Be able to do that.
- 47:23And my, you know, my son now at 14, who is, who is a junior champion at our local
- 47:28track for the last couple of years, he is so much better than me now, after all
- 47:34these years of my racing in general, in race craft, maybe not in race craft, but
- 47:38as far as being able, you know, he's 14.
- 47:41He doesn't think as much as you should just being able to.
- 47:45Pilot that piece of equipment.
- 47:47He just has it in him and it's not necessarily him It's because
- 47:50he started here and and now He's able to go and do whatever he he
- 47:56tested an f4 car last weekend.
- 47:57So it is the first car He's ever driven.
- 47:59He's never driven a car and not to belabor the point, but I do think you know Since
- 48:03we're talking about, you know disciplines and how they overlap each other.
- 48:06I do find a lot of times Carting and autocross are very similar because
- 48:12in order to be fast in an autocross, you have to be imaginative and you
- 48:15have to be able to reinvent the line a lot of times because if you're
- 48:18driving gate to gate or cone to cone, you're doing it wrong, right?
- 48:21You need to be able to see the path and that's where driving in cars and
- 48:25going to carts doesn't work because what they teach you in cars is be smooth,
- 48:29do this weight transfer, and it's all about managing, let's say, an average
- 48:33of 30% 3000 pounds around the corner.
- 48:35You can't just chuck it in there because it doesn't work like you can do in a
- 48:38cart or in an autocross or whatever.
- 48:40And I also relate it to what we commented on earlier about front wheel drives,
- 48:45because a lot of people don't understand how to drive front wheel drives fast
- 48:48because they're similar to carts.
- 48:50You gotta chuck 'em in there.
- 48:51Anticipate some understeer and let it put itself where it wants to go and
- 48:55then rocket yourself out of the corner.
- 48:57You're doing all that other stuff, you know, this and that.
- 48:59And the principles of, of road racing are the same.
- 49:02However, and not to go too far off the deep end on this, it's just
- 49:06a different driving style, right?
- 49:07But they all, again, they all culminate together in this melting
- 49:11pot of experience and carting again is the beginning of all that.
- 49:14So let's talk about getting kids.
- 49:17Into motorsport.
- 49:18I got two daughters and my eldest by the way.
- 49:20She's like a giant you're talking about Anthony being four
- 49:23foot six at uh, 11 years old.
- 49:25My daughter is four foot four At six years old, right?
- 49:30Yeah, so she i'm ready to put her in a cart man.
- 49:33I mean like so I hate to say though.
- 49:37My littler one is more Inclined more more just more into cars
- 49:41and mechanically inclined.
- 49:42However, I think there's an interest there You You know, I kind of stuck her in some
- 49:46power wheels in an early age to try to get her, you know, excited about the idea.
- 49:49How do I get a kid engaged in karting?
- 49:53And number two, motorsport is, let's just face it, male dominated.
- 49:58How does karting cultivate a female side of the culture and invite them in?
- 50:02So I'll pass that to Raze.
- 50:04So, um, it's actually a funny story.
- 50:06So my, my girlfriend's little sister is one of the best shifter car
- 50:10drivers in the country right now.
- 50:11She's, I think, ranked 20th out of a couple thousand.
- 50:14She's been carting since she was the age of four.
- 50:16I think, you know, getting children, girls, boys, any into carting in general,
- 50:20it, you know, like you just said, you're, you're, you're youngest one, you
- 50:23know, she's got that inner to go race.
- 50:26And do something or be around cars and the interest side of it.
- 50:30The best way I can answer that question is the racing industry in
- 50:32general, whether you're going into cars or carts is just so inviting.
- 50:36I was raised at the racetrack and I, and the core values I learned being
- 50:40raised at the racetrack, the discipline I had, my father made me learn at the
- 50:44racetrack, the dedication I had to have.
- 50:46All of the life lessons I learned, the friendships.
- 50:49I mean, I don't, I don't even talk to my friends from high school anymore.
- 50:51All my friends are at the racetrack.
- 50:53I mean, that's, that's, uh, hopefully one day a father, I, I don't see
- 51:02raising my family anywhere else, but.
- 51:04But the racetrack, I mean, the thing, the work ethic I was able to learn and
- 51:08just anything I just spoke of at the racetrack was just so important to me.
- 51:12I mean, I don't think I'd be the same human being if I, if I was never
- 51:15introduced to racing and that's honestly why we did all this, uh, to start.
- 51:18This is why I I'm so passionate about.
- 51:20Motorsports.
- 51:21Um, and just an enthusiast in general about racing, because just, uh, I
- 51:26couldn't imagine who I would have been, what I would have gotten into
- 51:29the trouble I may have gotten in.
- 51:30If I wasn't disciplined enough to take my racing career seriously
- 51:33or be so in love with it.
- 51:35But getting into carting or getting into motorsports, it's, it's all about
- 51:40the people around you in reality.
- 51:42I think just getting in a go kart, whether it starts at a K one speed
- 51:45indoor or a fun land where you.
- 51:48Shoot mini golf with the family and you end up just taking your
- 51:50kid for a ride in a go kart.
- 51:52It's not the easiest thing to get into, I guess.
- 51:54I mean, finding somebody to rent a go kart, that's kind of the problem with
- 51:57the industry right now, but that's something we're really working hard
- 52:00to, to fix is push the content out.
- 52:02So the kids do see carding or the family see carding, get the interest.
- 52:06You know, all the kids we see at the track, we have kids ranging right now
- 52:09at our local club from four to 13.
- 52:12They all hang out together.
- 52:13They're all playing football, you know, on the sidelines and stuff.
- 52:15It's just, it becomes such a.
- 52:17Family atmosphere.
- 52:18It's such a great place for a family to go and and participate together.
- 52:23Um, everybody's there to help each other.
- 52:24So it is a super inviting sport.
- 52:27Once you're trying to get into it, getting into it, getting that that time.
- 52:31Maybe it's a rental.
- 52:32Uh, like I said, a K one speed ride, something of that nature there, there's
- 52:36cart shops, almost surrounding every go kart track in the country that, that
- 52:39have a kid cart for rent for the day that you can throw your kid in or a rental
- 52:43cart at the facility, or like I said, an indoor cart track, those are the easiest
- 52:48ways into the sport if you're trying to introduce it to a child, but why motor
- 52:52sports, why get into carting first?
- 52:54Why any of this, uh, is, is again, just the life of the lifestyle.
- 52:59I mean, it's, it's irreplaceable.
- 53:01That's very true.
- 53:02Can't say the same about golf, unfortunately, just kidding.
- 53:05No, you can't.
- 53:06I don't care.
- 53:06You can ask Tiger Woods and he's not as excited as I am about motorsports.
- 53:10What does the future of karting look like?
- 53:12Like if you had, you know, races, crystal ball, what do
- 53:14you think the future looks like?
- 53:16As a kid, I never understood why it wasn't in the X games, why it wasn't an Olympic
- 53:19sport, why it wasn't bigger than it is.
- 53:21Everybody, you know, you can walk up to any kid and go, Hey,
- 53:23do you know what motocross is?
- 53:24And they're like, yeah.
- 53:25And you go, okay, you know what cart racing is?
- 53:27And they go, You know what I mean?
- 53:29Oh, you mean K 1 speed?
- 53:31So we have, especially in the United States, it's the second biggest sport
- 53:34in Europe, next to soccer, karting is.
- 53:37So we don't see it the same way that the world sees it, per se.
- 53:40In America, it's, I mean, it's 10, 000, Drivers deep
- 53:44consistently for the last 10 years.
- 53:46Now that's people moving up, coming in, et cetera.
- 53:49I see the sport being eventually on television streaming, you know,
- 53:53the same way that you would see an SCCA race potentially, or a
- 53:56Trans Am racer, even a NASCAR race, I think it's way more exciting.
- 54:00I think you can put a show on with carting.
- 54:03People often move up to cars and they go, man, this is.
- 54:06Boring compared to being at the cart track because the racing's just,
- 54:10honestly, it's just not as exciting as not, it's not as, you know, there's
- 54:13not as much, uh, contact going on.
- 54:16It's, you know, I think carting is more of a show than honestly, any other form
- 54:20of motor sports on four wheels personally.
- 54:22So when we get our promoters together and we start really working together
- 54:26to grow the sport, I could see the future of this being on television and
- 54:30having a professional side of carting.
- 54:32Because if.
- 54:32If I'm being honest, I think I work harder to be at the professional level
- 54:36of carding than most race car drivers do.
- 54:38It's way more physically demanding.
- 54:40My hand eye coordination has to be twice as good because
- 54:42everything's twice as fast.
- 54:44The work ethics there from everybody, the factory, and now as a factory, we put in.
- 54:48Tons of R and D work.
- 54:49And the, really the only people we're showcasing it to are the people within our
- 54:52industry, which is why our focus is more so on the social side and getting people
- 54:57into carting and growing this sport.
- 54:59I think it takes everybody working together to put that package together
- 55:03to not only, you know, we have to grow the grassroots side of it,
- 55:05which I think again, carting is the grassroots form of motor sports.
- 55:09You build that base and possibilities are endless.
- 55:12The automotive world is changing every day.
- 55:15We get newer and bigger and better reports about the next EV that's coming out.
- 55:20Cause I've been up and down the West coast running at several K ones.
- 55:23And even in the South, they're electric for indoor.
- 55:26And that makes sense because you want to be breathing in all those fumes.
- 55:29But do you see electric as the future of outdoor car racing?
- 55:34Many don't know, but companies like Bombardier, which owns Can Am, Sea Doo,
- 55:38Skadoo, a huge, huge company, Aprilia, and the list goes on on what they do.
- 55:44They make one of the most successful and best go kart engines right now,
- 55:47and they've been working with Bosch currently on an electric platform.
- 55:51You see these in development constantly.
- 55:54The core karting market It would, honestly, it would break my heart
- 55:57to see two stroke racing gas and and six speed shifter carts go away.
- 56:01The car market is going to dictate and really what we're allowed to
- 56:06do with the environment is going to dictate where we go with carting.
- 56:09I think two strokes are obviously not the cleanest.
- 56:12We've been working on some four stroke options.
- 56:14We race four strokes right now and then some of the lower level classes.
- 56:18But I do see a future and I don't think it's within five to 10 years.
- 56:22I say it's 15 years down the road.
- 56:24We're going to see full electric go karts, you know, electric
- 56:27engines strapped to these go karts.
- 56:28That's okay.
- 56:29I mean, it's whatever the market dictates.
- 56:31Dr.
- 56:31T, how do you feel about the future?
- 56:33I, I, I think that the electric cart is a lot closer.
- 56:38I say it's within five, seven years, uh, race.
- 56:40And I don't necessarily agree with that on that point, but I think that's
- 56:43a lot closer than we think it is.
- 56:45And I think, again, when he said, as soon as it's adopted by the car
- 56:49companies, then it, which it's becoming, I mean, let's look how far we've
- 56:51come in the last five years, right.
- 56:53From the Tesla to, to the new Bolt and the Volt from Chevy.
- 56:57I think the future is bright.
- 56:58I agree with.
- 57:00Race 90 percent of the time and I think part of what we're doing here to be able
- 57:05to showcase what happens here That was the one thing like, you know, i'm an outsider
- 57:09coming into this so I get to see this from a different perspective Necessarily than
- 57:13than guys and it happens every day and I get I get guys at the track who've done
- 57:17this for For 20 years and I look at them and I ask some questions and there's one
- 57:21gentleman in particular Who uh, you know, he's kind of a because it's always been
- 57:25done this way kind of thing with that That doesn't make you stand out to anybody.
- 57:29And it doesn't advance the sport because it's always been done that way.
- 57:32I've always been the guy that says, well, why not?
- 57:34And why can't we do that?
- 57:35The thing that makes me excited about the things we're doing with race factory
- 57:38is we're very excited about the carts.
- 57:40And we know that what we've built and what race has designed is the
- 57:44forefront of carting right now.
- 57:46And it just.
- 57:47We don't buy and have made and design a hundred of these things It's like
- 57:51there can be 20 or 30 of them or 10 even hey this we need we could do this
- 57:56better Well, we're already leading.
- 57:58Okay, but we could do this better.
- 57:59So the next order goes in with a totally new design For new stuff.
- 58:03So the constant innovation is really cool for race factory.
- 58:06That's what I wanted to be a part of I also wanted to be a part of this as far
- 58:10as the branding of it, right because race factory really needs to be about
- 58:15Bringing new people into the sport.
- 58:17The fact of the matter is there's no real marketing to people
- 58:20who aren't in the sport, right?
- 58:21so Step one of this is being on your guys show right now, right?
- 58:26And your podcast literally, I mean, it's literally where we want to be
- 58:29and what we want to do, because if you can't get the new idea to more
- 58:34people, then you're not going to grow.
- 58:36I don't have any desire to do what's always been done.
- 58:39I've always innovated to a point, even in, in my physical medicine clinics
- 58:43with medical doctors and nurses and Kairos and like all the types of things.
- 58:47So I, I'm, I'm excited about.
- 58:49The possibilities, and to be honest, it's a level playing field.
- 58:52There's nobody doing this stuff.
- 58:54We are tasked with getting out what we're doing to more people
- 58:58to be able to bring them in.
- 59:00I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but for anyone who might be
- 59:02listening, come to a local track.
- 59:04If you show up and you decide that you want to do anything like this, come to Pit
- 59:08Race where we are, find us, Race Factory.
- 59:11You will find people there who you may not agree with all the
- 59:14time, but if you need something.
- 59:16They're the first person to give it to you.
- 59:18Yeah, man, take this.
- 59:19You need that.
- 59:19You need that gear.
- 59:20You need that tire.
- 59:21You need that thing.
- 59:22How can we help you with the motor?
- 59:23How can we, it's, it's amazing.
- 59:25And I've never experienced that in any other sport.
- 59:30It has a lot to do with the fact that nobody wants to go out on
- 59:33track and do laps by themselves.
- 59:34So you got to make sure your competitors are running.
- 59:36That way at least you can brag that you beat them, you know, whether they're,
- 59:39whether they're band aided or not.
- 59:41Right.
- 59:41I mean, we know that's the, that's the real principle behind all that, but
- 59:44I do want to circle back to something important about the future of carding.
- 59:48I tend to agree with both of you and disagree with both
- 59:50of you at the same time.
- 59:52I think Dr.
- 59:52T's right.
- 59:53I think the future is a lot closer than we realize for various reasons,
- 59:56environmental, but also they're going to need to groom formula e drivers somehow.
- 1:00:02And they're going to have to get kids into electric go karts early, right?
- 1:00:05Because as we know, the power delivery.
- 1:00:08And the complete mechanics of electric cars, their handling is,
- 1:00:12is totally different than that of gas, the torque curve, all of it.
- 1:00:16So though the principle of carting is the same, having driven both.
- 1:00:20And I'm sure race you have too.
- 1:00:21It's just a night and day difference.
- 1:00:24If you take the handling off of the table, outside of that, it's especially
- 1:00:28important that we're talking right.
- 1:00:30The carting world and the automotive world are talking right now that, you
- 1:00:33know, at least through this medium, through our podcast, we're talking.
- 1:00:35Because we have the challenge of keeping motor sports alive from a grassroots
- 1:00:41perspective, from the club racing perspective, from time trials, from high
- 1:00:45performance driver's education and all that, because as sports cars start to
- 1:00:49disappear, as the manual start to dry up, as the two door coupes are gone.
- 1:00:55And now we're going to electric SUVs and Ford F 150s and all
- 1:00:59this stuff that's coming out.
- 1:01:00It means less and less cars, except if you're into old cars,
- 1:01:04are going to be on racetracks.
- 1:01:06And where do outdoor karting tracks generally live?
- 1:01:09At racetracks.
- 1:01:09And if racetracks aren't, aren't profitable, then the kart tracks
- 1:01:13aren't going to be around either.
- 1:01:15So we have this weird, and I hate this phrase, symbiotic relationship.
- 1:01:20It's mutually beneficial to both of us that both sports continue
- 1:01:24because the karters go into cars, the kart tracks need to be available
- 1:01:29to make the karting exist, right?
- 1:01:30So.
- 1:01:30Again, it's a whole ecosystem at the end of the day when you're talking
- 1:01:34about four wheeled racing, right?
- 1:01:35Motorcycles is a different animal, but still related like, you know,
- 1:01:39adjacent to what we're doing.
- 1:01:40So again, it's important that we continue to spread this enthusiasm.
- 1:01:43And I think you guys are on the right track.
- 1:01:45So I don't think the future is bleak in any way.
- 1:01:49I just think that people have turned their attention to other
- 1:01:51things and maybe are distracted.
- 1:01:54I guess the bigger challenge that we all have is how do we
- 1:01:57bring people back to motorsport?
- 1:01:58I can answer that.
- 1:01:59I mean, like I said, I think what we're trying to do is, is going to do that.
- 1:02:05The social media side of things.
- 1:02:06So if we look at the automotive industry as a whole, karting or
- 1:02:10car racing, it's dominantly run by middle aged, old, older people.
- 1:02:16You can say boomers.
- 1:02:17Easy now.
- 1:02:18Boomers.
- 1:02:18Old, old men and women.
- 1:02:21Easy now.
- 1:02:23With technology not, you know, them living through having no technology
- 1:02:28to now what we've, we've got now.
- 1:02:30I, I think it's Wait a minute, no technology?
- 1:02:32Come on now.
- 1:02:33He just called you a Luddite, right?
- 1:02:36Thank you, yeah.
- 1:02:37Yo, he doesn't understand what Luddite means.
- 1:02:38If you know what dial up sounds like It's what you're too old
- 1:02:43to market anything anymore.
- 1:02:46Um, and it's just the truth.
- 1:02:48It is what it is.
- 1:02:49Everything's evolving.
- 1:02:50You know, I'm going to be depressed when we race electric carts because I love
- 1:02:53my C12 VP race gas with some castor oil.
- 1:02:57I love the smell of it.
- 1:02:59It's what wakes me up in the morning, but, uh, you know what, things are
- 1:03:03going to change, things are going to evolve and, uh, we're going to
- 1:03:06have to just build off of that.
- 1:03:07And that's where I think the racing industry has fallen behind a little bit.
- 1:03:11You know, I look at the marketing in carding cause it's generally
- 1:03:14driven a lot by younger people.
- 1:03:16A lot of millennials now are really starting to run the content side of the
- 1:03:21carding industry, the drifting world.
- 1:03:22If you just take drifting.
- 1:03:24As a sport.
- 1:03:25It was nothing 10 years ago.
- 1:03:27It wasn't a sport, really.
- 1:03:28It was a hobby.
- 1:03:29It was a sport, maybe in Japan and some of these other countries.
- 1:03:32But here in the United States, it really didn't start growing until you saw the
- 1:03:36millennials get into it and start creating content with it and start pushing that
- 1:03:40content on their social platforms.
- 1:03:42Again, companies like Hoonigan, Hoonigan's really taken The sport of
- 1:03:46drifting and exploded it to the public.
- 1:03:49So we want to do the same with carting and motor sports in general.
- 1:03:52I mean, we, we have our hands in some Trans Am stuff, some F4 stuff.
- 1:03:55We're always trying to give options to the racers to move up
- 1:03:58and help market racing in general.
- 1:04:00But I think it's all in the marketing podcasts are huge.
- 1:04:03You know what you're doing here.
- 1:04:05Like I said, I, we talked before we were recording, uh,
- 1:04:07I had my own podcast recording.
- 1:04:09Pushing content, I think, is what's really going to drive this motorsports
- 1:04:13to the future, um, because in reality, that's the form of advertising nowadays.
- 1:04:18I mean, our president uses it to advertise what he's doing every day.
- 1:04:22In reality that that is our source of advertisement and it's free advertisement
- 1:04:26something anybody can do I I stress a lot when we go to these one off carding events
- 1:04:31for people to to utilize their social media to push content to keep content
- 1:04:36going in motorsports and And, and try and spread what we're doing because, you know,
- 1:04:41again, it's not on TV as much as you see, like you said, everything's innovating.
- 1:04:45So we're not, we're starting to see sports cars go away
- 1:04:47and electric vehicles come in.
- 1:04:49And like you said, trucks and the two door coupes are going away and, and whatnot.
- 1:04:53So.
- 1:04:54I don't think racing is going to die because of any of that.
- 1:04:56If anything, Formula One is, is a strong platform that, that all these
- 1:05:01manufacturers use for technology to test in their new vehicles.
- 1:05:05So I don't see racing going away per se.
- 1:05:07Sports cars are the same thing.
- 1:05:08BMW houses a team because you know, they're innovating for the future
- 1:05:12for their production vehicles.
- 1:05:14So I don't see it going away necessarily.
- 1:05:16I see it shifting.
- 1:05:17I see it shifting a lot and potentially shrinking a little bit.
- 1:05:20Can we say motorsports has shrunk in the last 15 years?
- 1:05:23Absolutely.
- 1:05:23Absolutely.
- 1:05:24I would also say the advent of things like iRacing has probably changed the
- 1:05:29way we perceive it now, and especially now in the time of COVID, where you
- 1:05:34were watching IMSA through iRacing and Formula 1 and IndyCar through iRacing,
- 1:05:38it's like, wow, well, nobody gets killed.
- 1:05:40And oh, by the way, I can buy a ringer e gamer, you know, e sports
- 1:05:43guy to come in and play for me as we, as we allegedly heard happen
- 1:05:47on a few races there, but there's something to be said about that too.
- 1:05:51And that's very, you know, dystopian sci fi type of future where racing is now
- 1:05:56like ready player one and not us actually physically out on the track anymore.
- 1:06:00So I often wonder if maybe that's the end state of all this.
- 1:06:05Is it gonna be vr, ar you know, it, it won't matter if it's electric
- 1:06:09carts or, or pet petrol carts anymore because we're all gonna be jacking in
- 1:06:14like Black Mirror and playing online.
- 1:06:16It doesn't matter how old you are at that point.
- 1:06:17Right.
- 1:06:18I, I would agree with you and to some extent, yeah.
- 1:06:21I mean, listen, we all raced on the sim.
- 1:06:23During COVID everybody was, I mean, I think stock shot through the roof
- 1:06:30when COVID happened, but, and so did Fanatec and all the wheels and pedal
- 1:06:35sets and sim sets you can get, but there's nothing that can replace the
- 1:06:39adrenaline that you get in a race car.
- 1:06:41There's nothing that can replace that feeling, even just again,
- 1:06:44the people at the racetrack.
- 1:06:46So I think you're always going to have your motorsports enthusiasts
- 1:06:49that want to be hands on with it.
- 1:06:50I kind of.
- 1:06:51Disagree with you thinking that it may replace motor sports
- 1:06:54potentially or real racing.
- 1:06:56I think it's actually a great Tool to get people into motor sports I think it's
- 1:07:00another platform for people to See if it's something one they're talented at
- 1:07:04two if they're interested in for a lot less Again labor wise you don't have to
- 1:07:09do anything but buy the setup and Put your computer up to, it costs you a fraction
- 1:07:14of what it would cost to go buy a race car and try it or rent a race car for a day.
- 1:07:18So I think it's a way, you know, look at William Byron.
- 1:07:21He started on a SIM and now he's racing cup.
- 1:07:23I can see both sides of it, but I think they're always going to
- 1:07:26be separate in their own ways.
- 1:07:27I think it's amazing.
- 1:07:29I use it as a training tool every single day.
- 1:07:31I'm getting ready for a race in Sebring next week.
- 1:07:33And I've been on the SIM every single day driving Sebring.
- 1:07:35I don't see it replacing motorsports ever because there's just nothing like.
- 1:07:39Touch the feel, the smells, the, the adrenaline there's, to me, there's nothing
- 1:07:44like, and if you haven't experienced it for any of you listening and you're
- 1:07:46just sim racers, I suggest getting in a car and going to a track day and
- 1:07:50finding that difference for yourself.
- 1:07:52You know, there's only one thing that I, that I'll add to that
- 1:07:54because I think, I think race factory is positioned very well.
- 1:07:59Because let's face it, the reason that people don't get in race cars and
- 1:08:02don't go racing, it's one thing, right?
- 1:08:05It's money.
- 1:08:06It's always money.
- 1:08:07Now the VR world has proven that there's still interest there.
- 1:08:12You couldn't buy a headset.
- 1:08:13You couldn't buy a wheel.
- 1:08:14You couldn't buy a, you know, during COVID.
- 1:08:16So, the interest is there.
- 1:08:18We have to figure out a way to get these people into a low cost racing sport that
- 1:08:23gives them the same type of thrill, right?
- 1:08:26That they can get with VR, which is much more, obviously, in person.
- 1:08:31And that's the karting, right?
- 1:08:32So, if we can get them into karting, that's gonna be, get them young, Get
- 1:08:36them in, give the family something to, to do together, which all too many times.
- 1:08:41Listen, my, my son, he's just like every other kid.
- 1:08:44I got to pull the phone out of his hands constantly.
- 1:08:46I got to get him away from the screen, the screens.
- 1:08:49And, uh, that doesn't happen at the track, at the track.
- 1:08:52They're running around, working on cards, going up to see the other cars.
- 1:08:55They're actually like, I was, you know, back in the stone
- 1:08:58ages race, But, uh, yeah, right.
- 1:09:03It won't.
- 1:09:03Yeah, right.
- 1:09:04Exactly.
- 1:09:05So, yeah, I think that our job is to be able to get people into
- 1:09:09motorsports, in karting, starting them there, giving them, giving families
- 1:09:13something to do together again, I think race factory is a perfect option.
- 1:09:18If we can make it cool enough.
- 1:09:20And young enough with that young vibe with cool cool shirts like race has on
- 1:09:25and and good social media I think that we'll be able to do that better than
- 1:09:29anybody else at this point and we'll just see how it goes Race one more for
- 1:09:33you any tips for drivers things that they could do very easily to maybe make
- 1:09:39their karting Experience better make themselves faster anything you want to
- 1:09:43share, you know, some some hidden gems.
- 1:09:46There's some secrets So yeah, I, I mean, my training regimen, whether I
- 1:09:49was in cars or carts, uh, consisted a lot of hand eye coordination.
- 1:09:53Um, when I lived in certain areas that had honestly slot cars, I raced slot
- 1:09:57cars just for the hand eye coordination.
- 1:09:59When you're going on a thousand foot track in 3.
- 1:10:012 seconds, your hand eye has got to be amazing.
- 1:10:03And so I think hand eye coordination is, is one of the most important.
- 1:10:07Some people use video games for that.
- 1:10:09They even make these new things that I, I just, I forgot what they're called, but
- 1:10:13they're basically little light up deals that like you used to see in an arcade and
- 1:10:16you had to hit them as fast as possible.
- 1:10:18Um, you're starting to see the, a lot of racers use those physical conditioning.
- 1:10:21I mean, I, anytime I feel good in the go kart well rested, a lot of it has to
- 1:10:26do with my physical conditioning too.
- 1:10:28So pounding labs, uh, looking ahead.
- 1:10:31You know, I, the list goes on and on, but I'd say the easiest is preparing yourself
- 1:10:34with, with good hand eye coordination, being relatively physically fit, rest.
- 1:10:39Like Dr.
- 1:10:40T said is a huge one.
- 1:10:41If you're not getting eight hours of rest before a race day, I can guarantee
- 1:10:44you, you're not going to be as good.
- 1:10:45Um, and I guess those would be my.
- 1:10:46My big three that, and, um, I do a lot with nutrition on a race day.
- 1:10:50I make sure that I've got a proper calorie count.
- 1:10:52I drink enough water.
- 1:10:53I'm drinking amino acids, things like that to help me recover even quicker.
- 1:10:57I may take it a little more serious than most, but it all is up to that end result.
- 1:11:02So any tips for going faster in terms of driving technique?
- 1:11:05Going faster, um, buy a race factory car.
- 1:11:09Yeah, buy a race factory.
- 1:11:10No, uh, I would say, um, you know, data is nowadays, especially
- 1:11:15even in car racing, data is huge.
- 1:11:17Um, and I would say being disciplined.
- 1:11:19I work on, uh, Anthony, Dr.
- 1:11:21T's son a lot with his data.
- 1:11:23And I would say just being self disciplined, being able to self
- 1:11:26reflect on what you're doing out there, uh, utilizing your data.
- 1:11:29To the maximum potential to really go back and reflect on what you're doing
- 1:11:33different, but as far as on track to make you better without any of that stuff, I'm
- 1:11:37a firm believer that you have to find the limit and then dial it back five or 10%.
- 1:11:41So I'd say go find that limit.
- 1:11:43Don't be afraid.
- 1:11:44All right.
- 1:11:44So the last piece here, I give you guys the opportunity to say anything that we
- 1:11:48didn't talk about and an opportunity to thank any sponsors, partners, anybody
- 1:11:52you want to mention at this point before we kind of wrap up and close up.
- 1:11:54I do want to make a strong point that Race Factory is not just a karting company.
- 1:11:58We are a motorsports brand and you know, I'm actually outside of home.
- 1:12:02I'm here in Atlanta doing a meeting with some teams for Trans Am Racing.
- 1:12:06Uh, we've had some meetings with F4 teams and F3 teams, Spec Racer 4 teams
- 1:12:11to branch out into other forms of motorsports to help people grow into,
- 1:12:16you know, help them give them a path.
- 1:12:18To the car world to better their racing careers in the future.
- 1:12:21And hopefully maybe one day I'll be a part of somebody's IndyCar career.
- 1:12:24Um, between that and, uh, of course we have so many sponsors.
- 1:12:28Group A Apparel is a huge one of ours.
- 1:12:30Delta Sport U4K, which is actually a sim racing team that we do a lot with.
- 1:12:36Cross promotion.
- 1:12:37And, uh, we put our carters in their sims and they put their sim
- 1:12:40racers in our carts once in a while.
- 1:12:42Um, so those.
- 1:12:43Guys, Steelo USA, Liquid Sky, Whitehall Health Center, Mr.
- 1:12:47Dr.
- 1:12:48T himself.
- 1:12:49We actually are looking to branch out into a actual physical side of that,
- 1:12:54you know, tuning on the drivers, tuning on the racer themselves, trying to
- 1:12:57make the actual driver better through nutrition, through their physical
- 1:13:00abilities and things like that.
- 1:13:02It's something that Dr.
- 1:13:03T and I are talking about strongly getting into in the future.
- 1:13:06So yeah, all of that combined.
- 1:13:08Look for Race Factory on all your social outlets, uh, Facebook, Instagram.
- 1:13:13Yeah.
- 1:13:14Racefactoryusa.
- 1:13:14com.
- 1:13:15And we want to thank you guys for having us on here.
- 1:13:16Definitely.
- 1:13:17Yeah.
- 1:13:17You know, I'd like to thank the people that we've worked with so far, everyone
- 1:13:21that race mentioned, obviously.
- 1:13:22And then the people at our local track at pit race, they they'd been
- 1:13:26incredibly welcoming and, and we we've fielded almost half the field are
- 1:13:31on race factory cards at this point.
- 1:13:32And I think it has a lot to do with.
- 1:13:34We talk about being a motorsports brand.
- 1:13:36We also have take a very family friendly atmosphere.
- 1:13:39I mean, it's a very family friendly atmosphere.
- 1:13:41When you come and see what we do, we're very serious about training.
- 1:13:45We're very serious about the carts themselves on, on race days, but we're
- 1:13:49all, there's always food and music.
- 1:13:51And it's, it's like an event.
- 1:13:53For us to be there.
- 1:13:54So you know what I mean?
- 1:13:55So when you think about race factory, you can think about some of the
- 1:13:58baddest ass racers out there, but you can also think, Hey, this is a
- 1:14:02place where where your mom can come or your girlfriend or your parents or
- 1:14:07whoever to come and be comfortable.
- 1:14:09And have a good time with us because I think that's as important as any results.
- 1:14:14That's what I've chosen.
- 1:14:15That's what Race has signed on for as well.
- 1:14:17I mean, he's a hardcore racer.
- 1:14:19He's a wonderful gentleman.
- 1:14:21And, uh, I thank him as well for helping me to be a part of, uh, and
- 1:14:24teaching me personally what it means to be at the highest levels of karting.
- 1:14:28But, uh, to, to everyone else that has come out and been so kind.
- 1:14:31Our social media person, Alexis, she's incredible and wonderful.
- 1:14:34And, uh, we can't.
- 1:14:36Put this show on without her and for anyone else that I'm forgetting.
- 1:14:39I, I, I, sorry.
- 1:14:41There's a lot of great people we're working with and this is for me, it's a
- 1:14:48side business that is becoming a passion and I'm just really happy to, to be able
- 1:14:52to be on this podcast with you guys.
- 1:14:54And, uh, if there's ever anything we can do for you personally, uh, professionally,
- 1:14:58please don't hesitate to call me, uh, personally or Race Factory in general.
- 1:15:03So I think to wrap things up, as I look back over things, I'm reminded
- 1:15:07of when Ayrton Senna was interviewed.
- 1:15:10You know, many years before his death and the reporters asked
- 1:15:14him, what was your favorite race?
- 1:15:16What was your most memorable race of all these F1 races and wins
- 1:15:20and pole positions you've had?
- 1:15:21And he flat answered, karting, right?
- 1:15:25That's when he had the most fun.
- 1:15:26He always viewed it as the most pure form of racing.
- 1:15:29And for somebody of that caliber with that reputation, with that.
- 1:15:33History to look back after all those wins and all those years and
- 1:15:37say carding is where it's at That's something we should all take to heart.
- 1:15:40We should all think about and I think what you guys are doing is awesome And
- 1:15:43I think it stems from those types of emotions that that sentimentality there
- 1:15:48And I and I applaud you guys for what you're doing and I cannot thank you guys
- 1:15:51enough for being on the show This has been excellent and hopefully educational for
- 1:15:55our listeners and hopefully for everybody that's out there listening that's got
- 1:15:58kids We're Call up race, call up Dr.
- 1:16:01T, look up racefactoryusa.
- 1:16:03com.
- 1:16:03See what's going on.
- 1:16:04Get your kids involved.
- 1:16:06This is how we keep motorsport alive is getting the kids interested.
- 1:16:10And if you don't have kids, maybe you'll like karting.
- 1:16:13Try something different.
- 1:16:14Get into something new.
- 1:16:15Call Dr.
- 1:16:16T for your chiropractor needs after you're done.
- 1:16:20And on that note, gentlemen, again, I cannot thank you enough.
- 1:16:23It's been an absolute pleasure.
- 1:16:25Thanks for coming on the show.
