- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Episode 11, can you believe it? Lucas: I know, right? We're building up a nice little Swahili toolkit. Today we're going to focus on something super practical: greetings by time of day. Luna: Oh, like 'good morning' and 'good afternoon'? We touched on those before, but I'd love to drill them more. Lucas: Exactly. Let's start with the most general one: Jambo. You've seen this before. It's a friendly 'hello' that works any time. Luna: Jambo. Sounds like 'jumbo' but with an 'a'. Lucas: Yes! Jambo. Try it. Luna: Jambo. Lucas: Perfect. Now for morning, we say: Habari za asubuhi. Luna: Habari za asubuhi. That's a mouthful. Lucas: Break it down: Habari means 'news' or 'how are things', za means 'of', asubuhi is 'morning'. So literally 'news of the morning'. Luna: Habari za asubuhi. Good morning. Lucas: Right. Now for afternoon: Habari za mchana. Luna: Habari za mchana. Mchana is afternoon. Lucas: You got it. And for evening/night: Habari za jioni. Luna: Habari za jioni. Jioni is evening. Lucas: Yes! So let's practice these four. Repeat after me: Jambo. Luna: Jambo. Lucas: Habari za asubuhi. Luna: Habari za asubuhi. Lucas: Habari za mchana. Luna: Habari za mchana. Lucas: Habari za jioni. Luna: Habari za jioni. Lucas: Great! Now let's do a tiny role-play. Imagine we meet in the morning. Luna: Okay, let's go. Habari za asubuhi, Lucas. Lucas: Habari za asubuhi, Luna! How are you? Luna: Nzuri, asante. And you? Oh wait, that was from earlier episodes. Lucas: Nice callback! Let's try another. Now it's afternoon. Luna: Habari za mchana, Lucas. Lucas: Habari za mchana, Luna. What's up? Luna: Not much, just learning Swahili. Lucas: Good answer. Now evening. Luna: Habari za jioni, Lucas. Lucas: Habari za jioni, Luna. How was your day? Luna: It was good! So now I can greet people at any time. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a quick recap. What's the general hello? Luna: Jambo. Lucas: Good morning? Luna: Habari za asubuhi. Lucas: Good afternoon? Luna: Habari za mchana. Lucas: Good evening? Luna: Habari za jioni. Lucas: Perfect. You've got them all. Now let's mix it up a bit. I'll say a time, you greet me. Luna: Okay, hit me. Lucas: Morning. Luna: Habari za asubuhi. Lucas: Afternoon. Luna: Habari za mchana. Lucas: Evening. Luna: Habari za jioni. Lucas: Any time. Luna: Jambo. Lucas: You're a natural. Let's do one more role-play. You're walking into a shop in the morning. Luna: Habari za asubuhi! Lucas: Habari za asubuhi! Karibu. Welcome. Luna: Asante. Oh, I like that. 'Karibu' is welcome, right? Lucas: Yes! We'll cover that more later. For now, focus on the greetings. One last time: repeat after me. Jambo. Luna: Jambo. Lucas: Habari za asubuhi. Luna: Habari za asubuhi. Lucas: Habari za mchana. Luna: Habari za mchana. Lucas: Habari za jioni. Luna: Habari za jioni. Lucas: Fantastic. That's it for today. Practice these throughout your day. When you wake up, say Habari za asubuhi. At lunch, Habari za mchana. In the evening, Habari za jioni. Luna: And any time, Jambo. Lucas: Exactly. Thanks for listening to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time. Kwaheri! Luna: Kwaheri!
