Latest / Birdland Territory / Gibson debuts, but O's lose again
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: It has been a tough weekend for the Orioles in
- 0:09Speaker 1: New York. We knew going in on paper it didn't
- 0:12Speaker 1: look great, and unfortunately Birdland on the field has played
- 0:15Speaker 1: out that way for three days. Trey Gibson made a
- 0:18Speaker 1: certainly a credible debut. We're going to get into that
- 0:21Speaker 1: a lot during the show. But the Orioles have lost
- 0:24Speaker 1: again to the Yankees. It got away from Kittrich late
- 0:27Speaker 1: eleven three, they fall, and guys, you're really reeling here.
- 0:30Speaker 1: This is not what they wanted fifteen and nineteen. It's
- 0:34Speaker 1: a season low four games under five hundred and eight
- 0:38Speaker 1: games out of first in early May. The Yankees are
- 0:41Speaker 1: separating themselves from everybody, including the Orioles, which has been
- 0:44Speaker 1: a little disappointing in Birdland here.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been a tough weekend for sure. Like you said,
- 0:50Speaker 2: I think Ben McDonald kind of wrapped it up great
- 0:52Speaker 2: on the broadcast has kind of said the Yankees have
- 0:54Speaker 2: been better in every phase of the game, and watching
- 0:57Speaker 2: that these first three games, there's no disputing that. I mean,
- 1:00Speaker 2: they've been out pitched, out hit, and outfielded for these
- 1:03Speaker 2: three games. Unfortunately for the Orioles and for the fans,
- 1:06Speaker 2: But you know, you got to go out tomorrow and
- 1:08Speaker 2: you got to face one of the better pitchers and
- 1:10Speaker 2: hopefully come out with a win and kind of salvage
- 1:12Speaker 2: this four game series in New York. But like you said,
- 1:14Speaker 2: it's been an ugly weekend, but you just got to
- 1:17Speaker 2: keep going out there and you never know what can
- 1:18Speaker 2: happen tomorrow.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been really really tough watching the first three
- 1:24Speaker 3: games of this series because, like you said, Brad mentioning
- 1:27Speaker 3: what Ben said that they've been outclassed by the Yankees
- 1:31Speaker 3: so far through these first three games. In the first
- 1:34Speaker 3: two games especially, were very uncompetitive. This game, it got
- 1:38Speaker 3: away from them late, but it was, you know, a
- 1:41Speaker 3: very winnable ball game through the first seven innings or so.
- 1:45Speaker 3: But unfortunately, it's just more of the broken record, a
- 1:48Speaker 3: lot of situations where the defense self inflict, the mistakes
- 1:53Speaker 3: giving base runners an extra ninety feet. Errors were there,
- 1:57Speaker 3: and the bats just not doing enough and they had
- 2:01Speaker 3: their chances. I think that's what was so frustrating about
- 2:04Speaker 3: the game today, Steve, was the fact that Max Freed
- 2:09Speaker 3: he was far from his a game today and the
- 2:12Speaker 3: Orioles were making him work and he was throwing a
- 2:14Speaker 3: lot of pitches. Theo's got the leadoff man on in
- 2:18Speaker 3: seven of the first eight innings, but only had three
- 2:21Speaker 3: runs to show for it.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Yeah, let's go back to the fourth inning. Bases loaded,
- 2:26Speaker 1: no outs, bases loaded, I believe still with one out,
- 2:30Speaker 1: that was the inning to put the hammer down. They
- 2:32Speaker 1: scored two runs to tie it, but that felt like
- 2:35Speaker 1: a four or five run inning. They just can't get
- 2:37Speaker 1: that double in the gap when they needed right now,
- 2:39Speaker 1: no matter who's up, it seems like, and you're right, Tim,
- 2:44Speaker 1: Max Freed was not nearly at his best today. He
- 2:47Speaker 1: was there for the taking. He was begging the Orioles
- 2:49Speaker 1: to take it from him, and they couldn't do it.
- 2:51Speaker 1: So maybe that's a veteran brad who finds some way
- 2:54Speaker 1: when he's not at his best. But it just felt
- 2:57Speaker 1: like the Orioles really had a chance in the fourth
- 2:59Speaker 1: to put the hammer down.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think you're right.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I think it has more to do with Max Freed
- 3:04Speaker 2: being an ace type pitcher and kind of just limiting
- 3:07Speaker 2: damage there. Like you said, it could have been a
- 3:09Speaker 2: four or five inning run inning, like we've seen some
- 3:12Speaker 2: ore pitchers kind of get in that spot and it
- 3:14Speaker 2: seems to go the opposite direction where they give up
- 3:16Speaker 2: the four or five run spot.
- 3:17Speaker 4: But Max is a professional who's.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Been around a long time, and he's getting paid a
- 3:21Speaker 2: lot of money to do this, and he got out
- 3:23Speaker 2: of there with two runs and kept the game tied
- 3:25Speaker 2: at that point, and I guess that's what they're paying
- 3:28Speaker 2: them for, is to kind of just limit the damage
- 3:30Speaker 2: and go out there and put up I mean, he
- 3:32Speaker 2: didn't have his a game at all today. At one point,
- 3:34Speaker 2: I think he had thrown twenty change ups and thrown
- 3:36Speaker 2: eighteen for balls. He had one swing and miss and
- 3:38Speaker 2: one foul ball or something like that. And when he's
- 3:41Speaker 2: pitching like that, you just really got to take advantage
- 3:44Speaker 2: of it. And they were close, but they weren't able
- 3:46Speaker 2: to really, you know, knock the door down and get
- 3:48Speaker 2: frunds there when they needed it in the middle of
- 3:50Speaker 2: the game.
- 3:52Speaker 3: This was a situation where the offense really needed to
- 3:55Speaker 3: pick up Trey Gibson, who was making his first start,
- 3:58Speaker 3: first outing in the big than. They were talking about
- 4:01Speaker 3: it on the broadcast. He's the first Orioles starting pitcher
- 4:05Speaker 3: to make their MLB debut in Yankee Stadium, So it
- 4:10Speaker 3: just doesn't happen, and when Freed's off, the offense certainly
- 4:14Speaker 3: has to pick it up. And we saw Craig Aalbernaz
- 4:17Speaker 3: tried out a very different lineup today.
- 4:19Speaker 5: It was alright, he's one through nine.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Gunnar Henderson was sitting for the first time all year,
- 4:24Speaker 3: but they just weren't able to get big hit and
- 4:27Speaker 3: we saw Jeremiah Jackson, who's playing the role of hero
- 4:30Speaker 3: a ton this season, he had a tough day, you know,
- 4:33Speaker 3: grounding into a couple of double plays.
- 4:36Speaker 5: And you know, you.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Look back at some of the guys that they brought in,
- 4:40Speaker 3: Tyler O'Neill, going back to last year. You're still waiting
- 4:44Speaker 3: to see him get going. And we know injuries have
- 4:47Speaker 3: been a big factor for him, but a big reason
- 4:50Speaker 3: you brought him in was because he's a guy that
- 4:52Speaker 3: can do damage against left handed hitting, and he was
- 4:55Speaker 3: hitless today.
- 4:58Speaker 1: We mentioned the other day the time for the stars
- 5:01Speaker 1: to step up, and one of them has. It's Pete Alonzo,
- 5:04Speaker 1: who's had a pretty good series in New York. He's
- 5:06Speaker 1: four for ten with two homereds and a double. But
- 5:09Speaker 1: Gunner didn't start today, just got a day off. One
- 5:12Speaker 1: for eight has fanned four ward is one for ten
- 5:15Speaker 1: Atlezo for twelve. So guys they've been counting on and
- 5:18Speaker 1: who've been starting to really carry the mail here have
- 5:21Speaker 1: not done it in New York. And again they can't
- 5:24Speaker 1: count on Tavars and Jeremiah Jackson to do it every day.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it makes it tough to win when you're the
- 5:30Speaker 2: stars are counting on to put up certain numbers just
- 5:33Speaker 2: aren't just doing it together.
- 5:34Speaker 4: And I know I mentioned earlier that where.
- 5:36Speaker 2: You kind of want a couple of them to carry
- 5:37Speaker 2: the load and out all together. But when you going
- 5:40Speaker 2: to New York and you know you're playing the Yankees
- 5:42Speaker 2: that are the best team in the American League at
- 5:43Speaker 2: this point, you're gonna need those guys to step up,
- 5:46Speaker 2: and that's who you. Pete's done his job, and unfortunately
- 5:48Speaker 2: the other guys have had a tough series, and it's
- 5:51Speaker 2: kind of where you're at. You lose three in a
- 5:53Speaker 2: row and you don't have everybody kind of stepping up
- 5:55Speaker 2: when they need to, and you just wish you had
- 5:58Speaker 2: just a couple hits from those guys there to just
- 6:00Speaker 2: kind of get things jump started a little bit, and
- 6:02Speaker 2: they just haven't been able to find their footing here
- 6:05Speaker 2: so far in this Yankee series.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Greg almern as again in his postgame interview, guys very
- 6:11Speaker 1: blunt about the team, and I like that, but it's
- 6:15Speaker 1: got into wins soon. He's acknowledging how dire it is,
- 6:20Speaker 1: and he even said something like, you know, we're either gonna,
- 6:22Speaker 1: like I'm paraphrasing here, crawl up in the corner or
- 6:25Speaker 1: we're going to rise up and do something about it
- 6:27Speaker 1: and get this season back. And that tim it's kind
- 6:31Speaker 1: of too early for like panic or but it's not
- 6:34Speaker 1: for sense of urgency and where this team is at.
- 6:38Speaker 5: We were staying to turn the last episode.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Steve, I firmly believe you're you're going to have a
- 6:43Speaker 3: very good idea of how this season is going to
- 6:46Speaker 3: turn out by the end of May, just because of
- 6:48Speaker 3: the amount of games you're going against the Al East
- 6:51Speaker 3: in seventeen games. They got another series against the Yankees,
- 6:55Speaker 3: you know, next week, so you're going to be tested.
- 6:59Speaker 3: They've only faced four games so far heading into this
- 7:02Speaker 3: series against teams with winning records. That steps up a
- 7:05Speaker 3: lot when you face the Rays and the Yankees multiple times,
- 7:08Speaker 3: and it kind of gets back to what we were
- 7:10Speaker 3: saying Brad At a minimum, you got to be able
- 7:14Speaker 3: to tread water.
- 7:15Speaker 5: You've got to be able to just stay in the mix.
- 7:18Speaker 5: And I know that you use that quote the other day.
- 7:22Speaker 3: If you can be around five hundred by Memorial Day
- 7:25Speaker 3: and then you can go on a run. This team
- 7:27Speaker 3: has to find a way to tread water. And you
- 7:31Speaker 3: get it, they're under manned, but a lot of teams
- 7:33Speaker 3: are dealing with injuries. You gotta find a way.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, even look at today's game with the Yankees.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Ben Rice went out in the middle of that game,
- 7:40Speaker 2: so you lose a huge, huge beat there in the
- 7:42Speaker 2: middle of the lineup, and their lineup still got big
- 7:45Speaker 2: hits there in the eighth inning to really just kind
- 7:46Speaker 2: of open the game up. And like you're saying, with
- 7:48Speaker 2: the schedule coming up here and you're kind of looking
- 7:50Speaker 2: at the Blue Jays catching their footing.
- 7:52Speaker 4: You just can't follow that far behind these.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Teams, especially when you know you're gonna have to play
- 7:56Speaker 2: them thirteen games during the regular season. And you see
- 8:00Speaker 2: where the Yankees are, you know what they're gonna be.
- 8:01Speaker 2: But the Blue Jays are starting to show what everybody
- 8:04Speaker 2: kind of expected them to be this year too, and
- 8:06Speaker 2: when you're chasing two teams at the top of the division.
- 8:08Speaker 2: That's a lot of games there you can end up
- 8:10Speaker 2: losing if you don't find your footing pretty fast, and
- 8:13Speaker 2: you could find yourself way behind the eight ball, way
- 8:16Speaker 2: sooner than you wanted to if you don't get things
- 8:19Speaker 2: kind of headed in the right direction.
- 8:22Speaker 1: These stats are depressing Birdland, but they're facts, and they're
- 8:24Speaker 1: gonna be everybody's game story. Probably the Orioles since June
- 8:28Speaker 1: twenty first, twenty twenty five or one and eleven, with
- 8:32Speaker 1: eight straight losses to the Yankees, that is painful to say.
- 8:35Speaker 1: It's been painful to watch. We mentioned the other day
- 8:38Speaker 1: nineteen and twenty right heading into this series. The last
- 8:41Speaker 1: three years they were playing them even but late last
- 8:44Speaker 1: year Yankees blitzed the O's and it's carried into this year.
- 8:47Speaker 1: So let's see if Monday night they can turn that around.
- 8:50Speaker 1: We got a lot to do on Birdland territory today.
- 8:53Speaker 1: We're going to get into Trey Gibson a lot as
- 8:55Speaker 1: a real positive today watching what he did with his
- 8:58Speaker 1: parents in the stands. The area pitching has struggled to
- 9:01Speaker 1: get the third out of innings in this series and
- 9:04Speaker 1: during this season, and we're going to touch on that too.
- 9:06Speaker 1: So a lot to do today here on Birdland Territory
- 9:15Speaker 1: Singers presented by Fan Duel as we kind of look
- 9:18Speaker 1: ahead to Monday's game. This is another challenge for Orio.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Batters Man Cam Schlittler say that carefully. Four and one, one,
- 9:26Speaker 1: five to one and seven starts and two really good
- 9:29Speaker 1: starts against the Oriels last year, guys, and he is
- 9:32Speaker 1: tough to hit homers off of. But Samuel Baseio got
- 9:35Speaker 1: him last year. Is the only Oriol that's homeward in
- 9:37Speaker 1: those two games. So he might be a good choice
- 9:39Speaker 1: to look at here. And he's really been overall. His
- 9:42Speaker 1: offense has really picked up these last few weeks. What
- 9:45Speaker 1: have you seen from Besio as he's starting to really
- 9:48Speaker 1: settle in and get to major league pitching.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah, to me, he just he looks more comfortable. He
- 9:54Speaker 2: looks like the hitter that you had heard about in
- 9:56Speaker 2: the minor leagues and that you're expecting to see. To me,
- 9:59Speaker 2: my biggest he was seeing him take singles the other way.
- 10:02Speaker 2: I feel like he was getting real pool happy and
- 10:04Speaker 2: kind of pulling off balls, trying to hit everything to
- 10:07Speaker 2: the pull side. But when you're able to hit ball
- 10:09Speaker 2: the other way. It kind of just freeze you up.
- 10:10Speaker 2: It allows you to let the ball travel a little
- 10:12Speaker 2: bit further. So on fastballs you can drive the other way,
- 10:15Speaker 2: and if it's a breaking ball, your barrel gets on front,
- 10:17Speaker 2: and those are the ones you start pulling. And as
- 10:19Speaker 2: you get more comfortable as a hitter, you start hitting
- 10:21Speaker 2: with more power to the pull side, which is what.
- 10:23Speaker 4: He's going to do.
- 10:24Speaker 2: And when he barrows the ball up every single time,
- 10:27Speaker 2: he's got a shot for it to go out if
- 10:28Speaker 2: it's hit at the right angle. So that's what I saw.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I just see him being more comfortable lend balls travel
- 10:33Speaker 2: a little bit longer and hit the ball the other way,
- 10:35Speaker 2: which kind of frees up the rest of the field
- 10:36Speaker 2: for him.
- 10:38Speaker 3: And he's definitely going to be in the starting lineup
- 10:40Speaker 3: tomorrow night after not being in the lineup today. It
- 10:43Speaker 3: was one through nine righties and he ended up pinch
- 10:46Speaker 3: hitting late in the game. He didn't start yesterday either,
- 10:49Speaker 3: but he came through with a pinch hit there.
- 10:52Speaker 5: I still go back to that game against the Royals.
- 10:55Speaker 3: As the turning point, and I'm going to continue to
- 10:57Speaker 3: go back to that date and are there going to
- 10:59Speaker 3: be ebbs and absolutely this is his first one hundred
- 11:02Speaker 3: and sixty two game season. But since that game on
- 11:06Speaker 3: April twentieth, the game that the O's won seven to
- 11:09Speaker 3: five in extras, Samuel Bassillo is hitting four to nineteen.
- 11:12Speaker 3: He's got two homers, three doubles, six RBIs, three walks,
- 11:16Speaker 3: and the strikeouts.
- 11:18Speaker 5: Have been down. I know he had the one game
- 11:19Speaker 5: against the Astros where.
- 11:20Speaker 3: He had four k's, but besides that, I feel like
- 11:24Speaker 3: the chase has gone down. He's not pressing nearly as
- 11:29Speaker 3: much as he was and when he was getting really
- 11:31Speaker 3: frustrated and snapping that back over his knee. I just
- 11:35Speaker 3: think he's a lot more calm, cold collected, and he's
- 11:38Speaker 3: in a role right now.
- 11:40Speaker 1: He really is. He's fun to watch. He's got all
- 11:43Speaker 1: fields power. He can hit it out anywhere in any
- 11:45Speaker 1: ballpark at any time. He's learning to hit the off speed,
- 11:48Speaker 1: and as you said, Timm, he's cut down on the chase.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Brad mentioned earlier, the Adleee injury could have an unintended
- 11:54Speaker 1: consequence of helping him get more regular at bats. He's
- 11:58Speaker 1: been playing a lot, but now he was playing almost
- 12:00Speaker 1: every day, and so I think he's gotten into a
- 12:03Speaker 1: groove here. It's going to be fun to see what
- 12:04Speaker 1: the final numbers look like for this kid. Man. If
- 12:07Speaker 1: he really locks it in, could be something special. So
- 12:10Speaker 1: Samuel Bissio is our dealy Dinger's pick for Monday Night
- 12:14Speaker 1: when the O's play in the Bronx. Head over to

- 12:50Speaker 1: So I know. The final line shows three runs for
- 12:53Speaker 1: Trey Gibson in four and two thirds. He allowed two homers.
- 12:57Speaker 1: One what's to be a bandbox homer just got out
- 13:00Speaker 1: of her right field. One was a pitch he wishes
- 13:03Speaker 1: he could have back. And Aaron Judge has done that
- 13:04Speaker 1: to just about everybody overall, guys Yankee Stadium orioles reeling
- 13:11Speaker 1: Major League debut in the Bronx. What do you say
- 13:14Speaker 1: about Trey Gibson today.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it was a really good start for him.
- 13:18Speaker 2: I mean, the fact that no Orioles starter has ever
- 13:20Speaker 2: made his debut in Yankee Stadium and he goes out
- 13:22Speaker 2: and gives the team a chance to win is all
- 13:24Speaker 2: you really could ask for. And he almost got through
- 13:26Speaker 2: the fifth inning there, which would have been really nice.
- 13:28Speaker 2: And I thought that exchange he had with Alberne Is
- 13:30Speaker 2: there at pitching man was something you never see from
- 13:34Speaker 2: somebody their first outing. But he was just saying, you
- 13:36Speaker 2: want to judge there, and you could tell he really
- 13:38Speaker 2: wanted that last out to try to get through the fifth.
- 13:40Speaker 2: But yeah, I thought overall he was great. I think
- 13:42Speaker 2: he was just two bad pitches there, the two curveballs.
- 13:46Speaker 4: That he kind of hung in his zone.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Besides that, I mean, his fastball was really good. He
- 13:50Speaker 2: was getting ahead and counts, and I think I just
- 13:53Speaker 2: think moving forward, they need to either rethink how he uses.
- 13:56Speaker 4: The curveball or what counts he uses it.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Because Ben was making a good point that they were
- 14:00Speaker 2: kind of either seeing a pop out of his hand
- 14:02Speaker 2: or there was something that the hitters were able to see,
- 14:05Speaker 2: and I think that's what the two homers were on,
- 14:06Speaker 2: was that curveball.
- 14:07Speaker 4: But besides that, Sladerrook looked really good.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Both his fastballs were working, and he's just gonna get
- 14:12Speaker 2: more comfortable, and that's what you want to see.
- 14:14Speaker 4: For first outing.
- 14:15Speaker 2: There was almost get through five, get comfortable, and I
- 14:18Speaker 2: mean that's the biggest stage he's going to pitch on
- 14:19Speaker 2: all year. So it was great to see and I
- 14:22Speaker 2: was happy for him. Making a debut is never easy
- 14:25Speaker 2: and it's something to remember for the rest of your life.
- 14:27Speaker 2: And he went out there and really represented himself and
- 14:30Speaker 2: his family and all of his friends that are in
- 14:31Speaker 2: the stands with great pride, and that was great to
- 14:34Speaker 2: see today.
- 14:36Speaker 5: I'm with everything you just said, Brad.
- 14:38Speaker 3: I think if you would have told Orioles fans, if
- 14:41Speaker 3: you would have told Craig alburn As that Trey Gibson
- 14:44Speaker 3: was going to give that type of outing and keep
- 14:47Speaker 3: the team in the game, going opposite Max Breed, you know,
- 14:52Speaker 3: one of the better pitchers in all of baseball, and
- 14:54Speaker 3: doing it on the road. And yes, Aaron Judge got him,
- 14:58Speaker 3: Ben Rice got him, and those guys hit a ton
- 15:00Speaker 3: of home runs this year. They're gonna hit a ton
- 15:02Speaker 3: more home runs the rest of the year and do
- 15:04Speaker 3: it to veterans much less guys making their MLB debut.
- 15:10Speaker 5: I thought, if you're Gibson and Steve.
- 15:12Speaker 3: I know you've covered him and his time in the
- 15:15Speaker 3: minors and recently put out a piece for him.
- 15:18Speaker 5: I thought he showed himself very well. The stage did
- 15:20Speaker 5: not look too big for him.
- 15:23Speaker 1: He's an oppressive guy. I mean I talked to him
- 15:26Speaker 1: a ton last year, and so at my age, I
- 15:31Speaker 1: still get excited to see these kids walk into the
- 15:33Speaker 1: Birdland Clubhouse and make their major league debut and have
- 15:37Speaker 1: major league success. It's so fun to say. I think
- 15:41Speaker 1: it's exciting for all fans, and not all of them
- 15:43Speaker 1: get to talk to these kids as I do. So.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Trey Gibson is cerebral. He wants to get better. He's
- 15:51Speaker 1: taken everything to heart. He's done some unique stuff. He
- 15:54Speaker 1: didn't throw a two seamer until last year. Now it's
- 15:57Speaker 1: his primary fastball, the death ball. They call it a
- 16:01Speaker 1: gyro slider that doesn't go across but goes down almost
- 16:04Speaker 1: like a split. That's a great pitch for him. He
- 16:07Speaker 1: added a cutter really this year, and he did something
- 16:13Speaker 1: that was very unique this winter, he told me in
- 16:15Speaker 1: a podcast we taped in March, and this was the
- 16:18Speaker 1: Oriel suggestion he threw, as he called it, a higher volume.
- 16:22Speaker 1: This winner not of like bullpen quality pitches, catch play,
- 16:27Speaker 1: higher volume of throws at lower intensity, he said, had
- 16:32Speaker 1: never done that before, and that's it was another way
- 16:36Speaker 1: to kind of build up. And he gets to the
- 16:38Speaker 1: first spring training game he throws three innings and we're like,
- 16:41Speaker 1: whoa three innings on the first day, But he said
- 16:43Speaker 1: that's because of the build up. He said his body
- 16:46Speaker 1: felt great. And other oil pitchers I've been told on
- 16:49Speaker 1: the farm have done this build up, and maybe even
- 16:51Speaker 1: some of the major league guys. So it sounds like
- 16:53Speaker 1: a tweak they've made, not bullpen pitches, not high intensity.
- 16:58Speaker 1: You're not cutting it loose, but you're just loosening your
- 17:01Speaker 1: arm more. Brad, have you heard it sounds like not
- 17:04Speaker 1: many pitchers are doing that right now, and he has.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Yeah, towards the end of my career, I started hearing guys.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I think Max Sure's there was the first one. Guys
- 17:13Speaker 2: kind of used as an example. He really didn't stop
- 17:15Speaker 2: throwing all offseason. He kind of kept his arm moving
- 17:19Speaker 2: in the normal path, but not of the same intensity.
- 17:22Speaker 2: And we heard Dean Kramer a couple starts ago to
- 17:24Speaker 2: talk about kind of doing the same thing this offseason,
- 17:26Speaker 2: and it's just kind of a new wave thing where
- 17:29Speaker 2: you kind of keep your arm slot, but you're just
- 17:31Speaker 2: you're not going one hundred percent and not throwing off
- 17:33Speaker 2: the slope. It takes a little bit of pressure off
- 17:35Speaker 2: your arm when you're just playing catch. So it was
- 17:37Speaker 2: something I heard towards the end of my career. I
- 17:39Speaker 2: think I was just too nervous to try it. I
- 17:41Speaker 2: think it was you're just kind of like an old
- 17:43Speaker 2: dog there at the end, so it's you don't want
- 17:45Speaker 2: to do anything too crazy, or you know how to
- 17:48Speaker 2: get through the season, how you do it, and I
- 17:50Speaker 2: just didn't want to mess with anything. But it definitely
- 17:52Speaker 2: sounds interesting, and I think something guys are doing that.
- 17:55Speaker 4: You just have to be really.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Conscious about not throwing a certain intensity, and I think
- 18:00Speaker 2: that's where the problems can maybe creep up with it.
- 18:03Speaker 4: But I get the idea behind it.
- 18:05Speaker 3: And Brad, that's where I was going to go with
- 18:07Speaker 3: it that so much has been made over the past
- 18:11Speaker 3: five ten years. Hits the rise in elbow injuries or
- 18:15Speaker 3: shoulder injuries, just pictures every sing you know, they get
- 18:18Speaker 3: hurt constantly. Why do you think that is? Why do
- 18:23Speaker 3: you think there's been such a rise.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's guys are throwing off the mountain
- 18:27Speaker 2: way too early, way too fast that I think they're
- 18:29Speaker 2: trying to throw one hundred percent in January where when
- 18:32Speaker 2: I first got called up, I remember I used to
- 18:34Speaker 2: throw the minor leagues all through December. Buddy Black pulled
- 18:38Speaker 2: me in his office and told me, why do you
- 18:39Speaker 2: pick up a ball in December? And I was like,
- 18:41Speaker 2: that's just a minor league throwing program that we had.
- 18:43Speaker 2: So I end up not starting throwing until January after
- 18:46Speaker 2: I first got called up, and it was just kind
- 18:48Speaker 2: of I see these guys now, when I was working
- 18:50Speaker 2: out at Vanderbilt here in Nashville, they're throwing ninety five
- 18:54Speaker 2: to ninety seven miles an hour at eight thirty in
- 18:55Speaker 2: the morning. I had done it, you know, at this point,
- 18:59Speaker 2: I five six years in the majors and kind of
- 19:01Speaker 2: knew where I needed to be. So they got me
- 19:03Speaker 2: on the track man, and the hardest pitch I threw
- 19:05Speaker 2: the entire winter was like eighty six and I just
- 19:09Speaker 2: I didn't know how these guys were able to throw
- 19:11Speaker 2: that hard that early, and I think that that's.
- 19:15Speaker 4: What everybody wants to do now.
- 19:16Speaker 2: They want to have see what the shapes of their
- 19:18Speaker 2: pitchers are doing, to give them more data to allow
- 19:21Speaker 2: them to understand where they are come April. I just
- 19:24Speaker 2: always felt like it was too much, too early, and
- 19:27Speaker 2: I just never really wanted to throw one hundred percent
- 19:29Speaker 2: of bullpens anyway, because it was just a bullpen and
- 19:32Speaker 2: it was more seeing form my own eyes what I
- 19:35Speaker 2: experienced and what I wanted to see. But now they're
- 19:37Speaker 2: throwing for data. So if you're not throwing ninety five
- 19:40Speaker 2: early in January, it's kind of a wasted bullpen. I
- 19:44Speaker 2: think is like kind of the idea behind it, but
- 19:46Speaker 2: I think that is the higher the reason elbow and
- 19:49Speaker 2: shoulder injuries have gone up is just because it's so
- 19:52Speaker 2: much so early, and guys are just trying to throw
- 19:54Speaker 2: so hard so often. But it's what everybody's doing now,
- 19:57Speaker 2: and it's I think if you don't go into spring
- 19:59Speaker 2: training ready, they're kind of like, what's going on?
- 20:01Speaker 5: You know?
- 20:02Speaker 4: Or you hurt? What did you do this offseason?
- 20:04Speaker 2: So I just think it's kind of maybe it's a
- 20:07Speaker 2: trickle down from the front off its Maybe it's a
- 20:09Speaker 2: guy's hearing what other guys are doing and it's like, well,
- 20:11Speaker 2: I kind of want to do that too. So I
- 20:13Speaker 2: really don't know what's causing everybody to do it, but
- 20:15Speaker 2: that was what I was hearing a majority of the
- 20:17Speaker 2: guys doing by the time I.
- 20:18Speaker 4: Was done playing.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Gibson the twenty twenty five Oriols Minor League Pitcher of
- 20:22Speaker 1: the Year. He won the Jim Palmer Award. It's great
- 20:25Speaker 1: to see one of their own hold his own against
- 20:28Speaker 1: the New York Yankees. The velocity show today is what
- 20:31Speaker 1: I saw on the farm last year, but on the
- 20:34Speaker 1: farm this year because we can find the data via statcast.
- 20:38Speaker 1: He's been averaging ninety three on his fastball. Today it
- 20:42Speaker 1: was ninety five point five. He had a couple pitches
- 20:45Speaker 1: touched ninety seven, essentially just a touch below that's what
- 20:49Speaker 1: they saw last year. He's not a flamethrower like one
- 20:51Speaker 1: of these guys who's gonna live ninety eight. You're not
- 20:54Speaker 1: gonna see it very often. But that was good velocity.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I don't know he's pumped up or what, but the
- 20:59Speaker 1: villa was better. Than it was seen at Triple A
- 21:01Speaker 1: this year.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and I've always heard the term there's like a
- 21:04Speaker 2: kind of a running joke, not really, but just a
- 21:06Speaker 2: term they use for the third deck. You know, when
- 21:08Speaker 2: you got the third deck, you find out who can
- 21:10Speaker 2: who can handle, and who can and it's kind of
- 21:13Speaker 2: a lot of times it was with the outfielders. They said,
- 21:15Speaker 2: like if they got nervous because that third deck it
- 21:16Speaker 2: was tougher to seaballs.
- 21:18Speaker 4: But I always.
- 21:18Speaker 2: I I always threw harder in the major leagues than
- 21:21Speaker 2: I did in Triple A, so I I kind of understood.
- 21:23Speaker 2: It was just there's just more juice, there's more adrenaline,
- 21:26Speaker 2: Like it's Norfolk's a great place to play, but Candy
- 21:29Speaker 2: Yards is way better. Yankee Stadium is way better. So
- 21:32Speaker 2: it's there's just a lot more excitement and it's easier
- 21:35Speaker 2: to get up for those games than I always felt
- 21:37Speaker 2: like it was in the minor league.
- 21:38Speaker 4: So I hope it's a good thing.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Hopefully it's from it's here to stay, and this is
- 21:42Speaker 2: the velocity see from him, because I mean, like you said,
- 21:44Speaker 2: he's not a flame thrower, but I mean, ninety seven
- 21:47Speaker 2: is gonna play and anything anytime you can get an
- 21:50Speaker 2: extra mile or power here there, it makes a it
- 21:53Speaker 2: makes for a worse swing.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Insteed, I'm kind of curious, is this the one and done?
- 21:59Speaker 5: Does he stay in the starting rotation.
- 22:01Speaker 3: There's just so many injuries going on right now, and
- 22:04Speaker 3: the news broke Friday Ryan Helsley on on the il
- 22:08Speaker 3: due to elbow soreness. But Craig Albert has said that
- 22:12Speaker 3: the MRI looks fine. But we know that Rogers is
- 22:15Speaker 3: still going to be out a little bit more with
- 22:17Speaker 3: the flu, and Flin and Kramer they're out. Maybe the
- 22:21Speaker 3: door's open for more than just a spot start for
- 22:24Speaker 3: Trey Gibson.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I say it is, and I think Albert has pretty
- 22:28Speaker 1: much said that without one hundred percent committing to another
- 22:32Speaker 1: start right now. I think the Oriols, when they reconvene,
- 22:34Speaker 1: are going to say, let's give this kid a couple
- 22:37Speaker 1: more until we get Rogers back, and then let's see
- 22:41Speaker 1: where we are then. And maybe he pitched it. He
- 22:43Speaker 1: does ever go back, who knows it. But he's shown
- 22:47Speaker 1: the poise, the composure and the stuff to succeed in
- 22:51Speaker 1: the major league. So I want to see more of
- 22:52Speaker 1: Trey Gibson. I'm really excited for him and was so
- 22:56Speaker 1: cool to see his parents today. What a weird spot
- 23:00Speaker 1: end of the game. They're smiling taking pictures. But come on,
- 23:02Speaker 1: you have one debut, the team loss, there's another day tomorrow.
- 23:06Speaker 1: You can't all mope every day. You gotta let this
- 23:08Speaker 1: kid have his moment, right. No.
- 23:10Speaker 3: And I was talking to Brad prior to you getting
- 23:14Speaker 3: on Steve, Just Brad quick, what went through your debut
- 23:18Speaker 3: and just were you able to have friends and family there, like.
- 23:22Speaker 5: It was a really cool story.
- 23:24Speaker 4: Yeah. I was.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Actually I was into COMBA Washington and they called down
- 23:27Speaker 2: like the fifth inning of a game. I was closing
- 23:28Speaker 2: in triple A and the manager was just like, hey,
- 23:31Speaker 2: if your spot comes up, we're not going to use
- 23:33Speaker 2: you tonight. They might need you in LA tomorrow. So
- 23:36Speaker 2: I'm going through the whole game. My spot comes up,
- 23:38Speaker 2: I don't pitch, and I'm like, all right, I'm gonna
- 23:40Speaker 2: get to where we're I get in the clubhouse and
- 23:41Speaker 2: the manager just goes, we don't know yet. I'll let
- 23:43Speaker 2: you know as soon as possible. But I didn't find
- 23:45Speaker 2: out till midnight. We had a twelve o'clock start in
- 23:48Speaker 2: La the next day, so I'm on the first light
- 23:49Speaker 2: out of Seattle, and I was telling Tim before the game,
- 23:52Speaker 2: I think it was actually better. I was sleep deprived
- 23:54Speaker 2: because you just don't have time to think. It was
- 23:56Speaker 2: just kind of I was tired. I was you're excited,
- 23:58Speaker 2: so the adrenaline gets you through it. But made my
- 24:01Speaker 2: debut in LA and I come to the mound and
- 24:04Speaker 2: Orlando Hudson's playing second base. He grabs my heart and
- 24:07Speaker 2: he's just like, young book, your heart beats like coming
- 24:11Speaker 2: through your chest.
- 24:11Speaker 4: How you can real pitch? And I'm like, who am
- 24:13Speaker 4: I looking at?
- 24:13Speaker 2: Am?
- 24:13Speaker 4: I looking at the manager room, I looking at like
- 24:15Speaker 4: what's going on here? I'm like, That's not what I
- 24:17Speaker 4: expected when I got to the mound.
- 24:18Speaker 2: But it was a cool memory to have and went
- 24:20Speaker 2: out and had a good outing, first strike out Matt
- 24:22Speaker 2: Camp and ended up having three strikeouts and my second
- 24:25Speaker 2: inning of work and just it was a memorable. And
- 24:28Speaker 2: like you said, we had a long drive back from
- 24:30Speaker 2: LA to Sant Diego. My phone was dead at that
- 24:32Speaker 2: point because everybody had been blowing me up all day.
- 24:35Speaker 2: So it's just a nice time to kind of just
- 24:37Speaker 2: relax and really think about it. And it's really about
- 24:40Speaker 2: the journey that gets you to that point that makes
- 24:43Speaker 2: it so exciting. So, like you're saying, Steve, but it
- 24:45Speaker 2: might not be. Everyone might not be happy to seeing
- 24:47Speaker 2: him smiling and with his family on the field, but
- 24:49Speaker 2: it's you get one debut and this kid made it
- 24:52Speaker 2: at Yankee Stadium with his parents in the stands. You're
- 24:56Speaker 2: never going to get a moment like that again, and
- 24:57Speaker 2: the rest of your life, even if you pitch for
- 24:59Speaker 2: twenty five years, you will still have that first game
- 25:02Speaker 2: you had. So I was really happy to see him
- 25:04Speaker 2: get to enjoy it and take the pictures and have fun.
- 25:06Speaker 2: And the attitudes have kind of changed with the older guys.
- 25:09Speaker 2: I think they kind of let you enjoy it. When
- 25:11Speaker 2: I was first there, it was kind of like, keep
- 25:13Speaker 2: your head down, don't show a smile, just go about
- 25:16Speaker 2: your business. But I think it's really cool they let
- 25:18Speaker 2: these kids go out there and enjoy it. They put
- 25:20Speaker 2: the MLB debut patch on their jerseys so that they
- 25:23Speaker 2: had this commemorative jersey for the rest of their career
- 25:25Speaker 2: in life, and it's just really cool to see and
- 25:27Speaker 2: it really brings.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Me back the thing about my first outing.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Yeah, we're gonna be talking more about this kid. I
- 25:33Speaker 1: got a feeling not drafted in twenty twenty three, signed
- 25:38Speaker 1: after the draft. Look at his Cape Cod League stats.
- 25:41Speaker 1: They were terrible. Some oriol scouts saw something to like
- 25:45Speaker 1: and they signed him. His Cape Cod League stats that
- 25:49Speaker 1: summer terrible. Orioles signed him undrafted. He told me he
- 25:53Speaker 1: didn't have many offers. There were not teams pursuing him.
- 25:57Speaker 1: The Orioles did and he pitched the big today. We
- 26:00Speaker 1: got a few more minutes to go in this show.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Stay with us on Birdland Territory.
- 26:06Speaker 7: Big Bad Morning Show, Vinny and Haney, Inside Access Live
- 26:11Speaker 7: on YouTube weekdays six till six, Search Baltimore one oh five.
- 26:15Speaker 5: Seven the Fan.
- 26:16Speaker 7: Subscribe for daily Short's right to your phone and never
- 26:19Speaker 7: miss which you miss one o five seven the Fan.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Tough weekend in the Bronx and Tim one thing. It
- 26:27Speaker 1: hurt the Ools this weekend. It's been a theme this
- 26:29Speaker 1: year at times. Two out offense for the opponents.
- 26:35Speaker 5: Yeah, and in particular against the starting pitching.
- 26:38Speaker 3: And you saw it with Kate Povid, you saw it
- 26:40Speaker 3: with Kyle Bradish. They both gave up five earned runs
- 26:43Speaker 3: and in both of their starts, four of those five
- 26:46Speaker 3: earned runs occurred with two outs, So I just kept
- 26:50Speaker 3: thinking this morning, like, hey, I wonder what their numbers
- 26:52Speaker 3: are as a whole when they're at two outs. And
- 26:56Speaker 3: this was heading into the game. The Orioles starting pitch.
- 27:00Speaker 3: They've given up the most runs with two outs this
- 27:03Speaker 3: season forty eight runs, most hits with seventy, most doubles
- 27:08Speaker 3: with twenty one, tied for the second most homers with nine.
- 27:12Speaker 5: Batters are hitting.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Three twenty one with two outs against Orioles starting pitchers.
- 27:18Speaker 3: That's hard to comprehend five forty one slug. The next
- 27:22Speaker 3: closest team is the Rangers with a four to eighty
- 27:25Speaker 3: seven slug And just for numbers for the bullpen, they've
- 27:29Speaker 3: given up the ninth most runs with two outs, with
- 27:33Speaker 3: twenty seven. So this is definitely an issue for this
- 27:37Speaker 3: ball club. And it's very deflating because I'd love to
- 27:42Speaker 3: have the numbers in front of me in terms of
- 27:43Speaker 3: the true shutdown innings, in terms of scoring a run
- 27:47Speaker 3: prior and then that shutdown what follows. It feels like
- 27:52Speaker 3: there hasn't been enough of those instances, Brad. And that's
- 27:56Speaker 3: just it's such a momentum killer, and it's such a
- 28:00Speaker 3: punch to the gut. I mean, I'm just thinking thinking
- 28:02Speaker 3: of it from the pitchers perspective, Where do this close
- 28:05Speaker 3: to getting out of the inning unscathed and then you
- 28:08Speaker 3: give up a couple earned runs and it really messes
- 28:11Speaker 3: up your start.
- 28:12Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it was like watching these games.
- 28:14Speaker 2: I actually was thinking about this before we brought up
- 28:17Speaker 2: the stats, and then when you said the stats, I
- 28:19Speaker 2: was kind of like, man, I thought it was not great.
- 28:22Speaker 2: But the stats are staggeringly not great at this point.
- 28:27Speaker 2: And it's it's it's the difference between wins and losses,
- 28:30Speaker 2: and I think it's why they are where they're at
- 28:32Speaker 2: right now with it's always about getting that last strike
- 28:35Speaker 2: and that last out, and that's what makes baseball such
- 28:36Speaker 2: a great game because you have to get twenty seven out,
- 28:39Speaker 2: so there's no kneeling it, there's no running out the clock.
- 28:41Speaker 2: You got to get that final strike or that final out,
- 28:44Speaker 2: and even in innings, you've got to get that final
- 28:46Speaker 2: strike and final out to kind of get you back
- 28:48Speaker 2: in the dugout to give your offense a chance. And
- 28:50Speaker 2: it's I think it really might be what has been
- 28:54Speaker 2: the missing piece for this season to this point.
- 28:56Speaker 4: It's we've we've been on the show talking.
- 28:58Speaker 2: About that, it's like they're so close to so close,
- 29:00Speaker 2: and we're right, they are so close, but it's that
- 29:03Speaker 2: last out of these innings that really have just been
- 29:06Speaker 2: killing them on the defensive side of things and just
- 29:09Speaker 2: kind of getting them behind the eight ball, and then
- 29:11Speaker 2: you've really got to get the offense. And I think
- 29:12Speaker 2: it's just kind of leading to the struggles and all
- 29:14Speaker 2: the other places of the that they've had so far
- 29:17Speaker 2: this season. So yeah, seeing those stats was kind of
- 29:20Speaker 2: disheartening at this point of the season because you just
- 29:22Speaker 2: don't think they're that bad, but you got to get
- 29:24Speaker 2: that final striking, that final out, and they always say
- 29:26Speaker 2: it's the toughest one to get, but I just didn't
- 29:28Speaker 2: think it was where it is at this point.
- 29:32Speaker 1: And you got to think the team is obviously got
- 29:33Speaker 1: the stats we have, and so their meeting of the
- 29:37Speaker 1: minds is probably saying, what is it scouting? Is it
- 29:41Speaker 1: some of our sequencing? What what are we can we pinpoint?
- 29:46Speaker 1: It's hard to think what you could pinpoint that would
- 29:49Speaker 1: be that issue.
- 29:51Speaker 4: Yeah, like go ahead, tam go ahead.
- 29:53Speaker 5: Well, I was gonna say the other thing real quick, Brad.
- 29:55Speaker 3: I looked up and this isn't a huge surprise either,
- 29:59Speaker 3: because it feels like we've had multiple of these episodes
- 30:02Speaker 3: talking about not just with two outs, but with two strikes.
- 30:06Speaker 3: They have batters down and the Orioles have given up
- 30:09Speaker 3: as a team, the second highest batting average against them
- 30:13Speaker 3: when the batter has two strikes, So it's it's doubling
- 30:17Speaker 3: down on that, like you're so close to getting that out,
- 30:20Speaker 3: you're so close to getting out of the inning, and
- 30:22Speaker 3: it just bites you in the butt.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think it's one of those things where,
- 30:25Speaker 2: like you said, Steve, it's not really I think they
- 30:28Speaker 2: know at this point that they're kind of struggling with
- 30:30Speaker 2: two strikes and two outs, but it's what do you do?
- 30:33Speaker 2: And it's I think pressing too much, trying to make
- 30:35Speaker 2: the perfect pitch, and they leave tony pitches over the
- 30:38Speaker 2: fat part of the play. And I think that's been
- 30:40Speaker 2: it this series. I mean, outside of the home run balls,
- 30:44Speaker 2: I feel like they've done a pretty good job pitch
- 30:46Speaker 2: and they're just leaving too many pitches and the heart
- 30:48Speaker 2: of the plate. And the Yankees have not missed I
- 30:50Speaker 2: don't think they've missed a single one. That's been a
- 30:53Speaker 2: you know, a I would call a bad pitch and
- 30:56Speaker 2: they've they've done damage on It. Hasn't just been singles,
- 30:58Speaker 2: it's been doubles, it's been Homer. That's what's really been
- 31:01Speaker 2: the separator of this series was just not missing the
- 31:04Speaker 2: bad pitches when they get a chance to hit it.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Well, we covered a lot of ground today. It wasn't
- 31:10Speaker 1: always great stuff to talk about, but the job is
- 31:12Speaker 1: to talk about the ball club, right, And we've been
- 31:15Speaker 1: here a lot. We're cranking out these shows, so guys,
- 31:18Speaker 1: thanks for this one. We'll reconvene here shortly and have
- 31:20Speaker 1: another edition of Birdland Territory and hope the OS fans
- 31:24Speaker 1: enjoy the rest of the series and the team gives
- 31:26Speaker 1: them something to enjoy Monday night in New York and
- 31:29Speaker 1: then on to Miami. So for Brad and Tim Steve Mleski,
- 31:33Speaker 1: thanks for joining us today on Birdland Territory.
