- 1:54So guys today's episode is going to be about how to do a solitary
- 2:03ritual. Last week's episode was talking
- 2:08about, the gifting exchange the gifting cycle why we do it the
- 2:13importance of it for not just engaging with our you know holy
- 2:19powers. Our deities, but with one
- 2:22another, in the other heathens in our communities.
- 2:25So definitely, if you are unfamiliar with that, you can go
- 2:28back through my catalog on your podcast listening platform and
- 2:33check out the importance of the gifting exchange or gifting
- 2:36cycle. But what I wanted to talk about
- 2:39today is you know, how do we actually do a ritual or what are
- 2:44some of the steps that we can take to perform one especially
- 2:49for a Of folks out here, who may, be new to Heathen, re
- 2:52coming into this path with a little bit of a uncertainty of
- 2:57how to perform these various things.
- 3:00So what I'm going to be doing is I'm going to be going over some
- 3:04historical information. I'm going to be giving you like
- 3:09a historically, accurate solitary, ritual, practice or
- 3:15performance, all right. How different folks do their
- 3:19own? Jules, you know, based off of
- 3:21the their own experiences and sorry it's early today and I'm
- 3:28voice is cracking here. Apologize for that.
- 3:32We'll get it through here though.
- 3:33We'll get through it. How different folks do their own
- 3:36rituals, is going to be entirely up to them.
- 3:40So what I'm what I'm showing you or what?
- 3:43I'm going to be talking to you guys about is you know, based
- 3:49off of Oracle evidence and things that we can see as being
- 3:53how rituals were done with. We are with regards to archieve
- 4:00Andre, pre-christian Scandinavia.
- 4:02Okay. So bear that in mind, if you
- 4:05want to do it differently, you're certainly welcome to
- 4:07develop your own methods. How you communicate with the
- 4:13your, with the gods and with your ancestors, and with the VA
- 4:15tear of the land of the home. That's all all up to you, okay?
- 4:21So before we get started into this discussion, I'm going to go
- 4:24ahead and take a quick break and let you guys hear a few things.
- 4:28From some local heat and businesses that I like to plug
- 4:32and then we'll come back and get into starting talking about how
- 4:36to do a solitary ritual. I'll be back.
- 4:39Thanks for listening this far. Hey everyone, thanks for
- 4:47listening to the podcast this far real quick.
- 4:49I just want to call your attention to a really neat,
- 4:53little blacksmith shop that I've come across on Facebook.

- 5:51Thanks guys so much for listening.
- 5:52Let's get back to the podcast. Hey folks.
- 6:01Welcome back. Thanks for taking the time and
- 6:04listening to that little commercial break.
- 6:06I appreciate you sticking around.
- 6:07Let's get into the discussion for today.
- 6:10Are the episode for today, really excited to do this.
- 6:13When guys because we talked last week about the importance of the
- 6:16gifting cycle and equal exchange and engaging our deities and our
- 6:21ancestors and the various They tear that we live around and
- 6:26with and so this episode is going to be on how to do ritual
- 6:31or how to do things that can be a part of this this gifting
- 6:37process or this gifting exchange or cycle.
- 6:39Okay? So the first thing that we're
- 6:41going to be talking about are what you need.
- 6:44OK. We'll we'll try to go into the
- 6:49things that you need kind of getting yourself set up before.
- 6:54The ritual, a simple prayer or something that you can do or say
- 7:01that, you know, get you in that mindset and then the actual
- 7:08ritual itself, and then how you would basically end the ritual
- 7:15and so on and so forth. So let's go ahead and get
- 7:20started with the items needed. One of the first Things that
- 7:25you'll want to have is a sacred place to do your ritual, right?
- 7:30So this could either be if you have one set up and this could
- 7:34be included in, this isn't just one place you know like you have
- 7:40what we talked about a week or so ago was the Holger the
- 7:45outdoor. He even altered.
- 7:48That's historically Made of Stone or space outside that you
- 7:53have dedicated to your Ritual to your bloat and you can also have
- 7:59one just indoors. You could have a table or a
- 8:02mantelpiece or something set up for your altar endure.
- 8:07So historically speaking you have the holder which was
- 8:11outdoors and was literally just mating like a pile of stones so
- 8:16it could be as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be,
- 8:18could also be something that you just have set up in door.
- 8:20So anyway, you have you have that, you have your space.
- 8:24You'll want to have a bloat Bowl something that is used for
- 8:30ritual only, not something that you use in your kitchen or that
- 8:35you use for anything else. It is dedicated and set aside
- 8:39specially for your ritual. So it's, you know, preferably to
- 8:46preferable to be made of wood, you can use Stone, you can use
- 8:51marble, you know, whatever, but it's rare.
- 8:54Leave. Would you also want to have
- 8:59something that is like a twig? The hotel chain is like a
- 9:07something from a tree. Leave.
- 9:08A lot of people use pine or Cedar, some sign of coniferous,
- 9:12tree something small enough to fit in your bloat Bowl to use
- 9:20for the blessing of things. You also want to have fire
- 9:27materials such as incense candles because fires used for
- 9:36ritual historically and pretty much any time I do ritual as
- 9:40well, regardless of who or what it's for, there is fire
- 9:44involved. Next you want to have something
- 9:48that holds the fire when it's lit.
- 9:54You can use a candle, some sort of a sensor a torch you know,
- 10:00something like that. So if you're if you're Outdoors
- 10:02you'll you can make a fire obviously if you're indoors you
- 10:07can't start a fire in door safely.
- 10:09So you'll want to have something like a candle or whatever like
- 10:11that, you can be a little creative.
- 10:15Of. And in that instance and then
- 10:17you'll want to have the actual plate of something that you're
- 10:21offering on. So you'll want an offering
- 10:23plate. This can be something of also
- 10:26set aside that is specifically used for ritual, but the it's
- 10:32different from the bloat Bowl. The bloat bowl is something
- 10:36specifically used for bloat to carry the, the liquid.
- 10:43Okay. It's not part of the offering
- 10:45per se. It's Of the it is, it's part of
- 10:47the offering ritual but it's not like the actual offering could
- 10:50be the food, whatever. So, there's offering Place
- 10:54separate from the bloat bowl and then, of course, integers fire.
- 10:58You need to have something to start the fire.
- 10:59So this could be a lighter piece of flint or steel, or flint, and
- 11:02steel obviously, to, to, to spark a fire, but whatever you
- 11:05use a Firestarter, okay? So now that we got that part out
- 11:11of the way, I am going to take another quick break word from
- 11:14our local heat and businesses. I don't want you guys to check
- 11:16out and then we will get into more of a in-depth discussion of
- 11:21the pre ritual, creating your Sacred Space and Performing the
- 11:26ritual itself, right? So stick around guys, I'll be
- 11:29back. Thanks for listening.
- 11:36Hey everyone, thanks for listening to the podcast this
- 11:38far real quick. I just wanted to call your
- 11:40attention to a really cool leatherworking company that I've

- 13:44end of your leatherworking needs.
- 13:46Thanks guys. Let's get back to the podcast.
- 14:01All right everyone. Welcome back.
- 14:03Now, here we go. Getting into the sort of the
- 14:07meat and potatoes of the solitary ritual, aspect or
- 14:11performing the ritual. We've already got our what we
- 14:14need. We've got our materials and now
- 14:19we're getting into the Performing of the action, okay?
- 14:23So what you want to do, Is first whatever you're offering, okay?
- 14:27Whether it be the food or a handmade item or whatever that
- 14:34physical offering is you're going to want to put it on your
- 14:36your altar, okay? You want to have your fire
- 14:40method already and then you can also want to have your the
- 14:47liquid for the bloat Bowl. Whether that be you know your
- 14:51cider Mead wine. Ale or beer or literal blood
- 14:58because this is a we're talking about it historically accurate
- 15:03type of ritual, lot of heathens, if they can will use blood from
- 15:10either their own animals, their own livestock, and we can get
- 15:14into that here in just a little bit of it.
- 15:16In terms of a proper use of this, some heathens will go to a
- 15:23market like a Sure, and ask for blood for cooking.
- 15:27A lot of times that's readily available, but that's preference
- 15:30at that point. You'll want the The Twig of the
- 15:34branch of the tree that you're going to use and with the bloat
- 15:39to sprinkle things. We're going to get into that
- 15:41process here in a little bit. But you want to get yourself all
- 15:45set up, okay? If you have Idols or statues
- 15:49statuettes in physical representations of The Gods on
- 15:56your altar, there as well. You'll want to have that all set
- 15:58up, and then if you're indoors, make sure that beneath them.
- 16:02There's something to catch the liquid that you're going to be
- 16:06using from the bloat, okay? Because we're going to get into
- 16:10that here in just a second. So, the next step is you want to
- 16:14create your Sacred Space with fire.
- 16:17This being like I said that, that sensor.
- 16:21Something that can hold or carry the fire.
- 16:24It could be a candle holder. It could be a, like, a metal
- 16:29bowl with the candle inside it other people will use literal
- 16:35like wood chips, incense, some people use oil creating a fire
- 16:41that will last at least about 10 minutes or so, give or take.
- 16:47So, like, you know, oil lamps, teacup lights, things like that
- 16:51work. Well, You can try doing this
- 16:55here where you light your fire walk in a circle around the
- 17:01halt, the altar, the Holger the the Sacred Space here and you
- 17:06can say some sort of a prayer to any of the deity's really but a
- 17:13lot of popular ones would be Odin Thor.
- 17:17For are frigg for a some of the more dominant deities that exist
- 17:23in the law. And you recite a prayer to them.
- 17:27It could be anything, you're handling them.
- 17:28You're welcoming them to the Sacred Space and creating that
- 17:31space with through the fire. Once you've created your Sacred
- 17:35Space you'll want to say some sort of simple prayer or of
- 17:42acknowledgement to the gods and goddesses and your ancestors
- 17:46isn't have to be pre written, but it can be but you can make
- 17:51it on the spot. Really?
- 17:52Just whatever comes to you from. Your heart and whatever suits
- 17:56you it's going to the gesture is what matters.
- 18:00Like I said, it doesn't have to be a big long dissertation.
- 18:03It could just be, you know, something simple Hail to the
- 18:06gods hail to our goddesses hail to our ancestors in the whites
- 18:10of the land, something, whatever?
- 18:14Okay. Something with that, that is
- 18:16genuine. That comes to you from your
- 18:17heart. Next comes the actual bloating.
- 18:23The Where you get your float bowl, that contains the at the
- 18:31blood or The Cider, or whatever beverage that you have in there
- 18:36again it whether it's blood or not doesn't really matter.
- 18:41Because again, that that's going to depend on.
- 18:44First of all, the nature of the ritual, what you're doing, do
- 18:48you even do you have a problem with using blood or you
- 18:51screamish are the people around you?
- 18:54That are involved if there are people there.
- 18:57But again, we're talking solitary rituals.
- 18:59So basically want to have enough of liquid in the bowl to take
- 19:04the spray of the door. The Twig the hero time.
- 19:08You want us to be able to sprinkle your Idols, your
- 19:11statues, the the god, representations of the Gods.
- 19:16You want to be able to dip this twig into the liquid.
- 19:19Sprinkle the gods? Sprinkle the offering Your self.
- 19:26And then, if there's anybody with you or any folks with you,
- 19:29so you're using this and you want to have enough liquid in
- 19:32the bowl, which is why I say, if you don't want to get bloody,
- 19:36you can use any sort of alcoholic beverages, you know,
- 19:39Mead weinsider ale that sort of thing.
- 19:41So, and then when you dip the blood or dip The Twig into the
- 19:48float Bowl, however many times, it's as often as needed to To do
- 19:54all these, you know to sprinkle everything.
- 19:58You can recite something. You know if you're sprinkling
- 20:02Thor you health or if you're sprinkling old and haloed and
- 20:07you can do anything at that point.
- 20:13So going to the blood thing I mentioned earlier that people
- 20:16will often try to get blood, whether you go to the Butcher
- 20:20and ask for it or whether you have your own animals.
- 20:23Now, I'm not suggesting testing and I'm not even implying that
- 20:28you should purposely kill an animal just for the sake of the
- 20:32blood, I would strongly urge anybody that decides, they want
- 20:40to use blood of an animal in ritual to use it and obtain it
- 20:49and acquire it in such a way that respects and honors the
- 20:54life of the creature that you're getting the blood from because
- 20:59this is their life that is being taken.
- 21:03So I would not harm it like so, so let's say, for instance, you
- 21:07have the means of slaughtering your own livestock or your own
- 21:11foul. You know, some people have ducks
- 21:13chickens geese, other things like that.
- 21:17Don't just go out there and kill an animal for the blood.
- 21:21You may want to wait until You have an animal that has may be
- 21:25weaker, that's not going to make it that's, you know sort of on
- 21:31its last leg either through old age or through illness that
- 21:35would if it was to stick around, would be a detriment to the rest
- 21:39of your flock of the rest of your livestock.
- 21:41Okay, cleanly. Humanely.
- 21:46Respectfully harvest. The blood from the animal and do
- 21:52so with utter respect Act and utmost.
- 21:55Thanks again, I'll clean slaughter.
- 21:59A peaceful Slaughter is something that you definitely
- 22:04want to. You know, keep in mind.
- 22:08So if you're not comfortable with doing that, don't it would
- 22:11just be better to use something of non-blood as some other
- 22:15alcoholic beverage or something like that.
- 22:20So once you do that once the so that's one point, I definitely
- 22:25wanted to bring up. If you're slaughtering it,
- 22:28you're going to, you know, use the bloat Bowl to catch the
- 22:32blood from that animal. Okay.
- 22:36So once you've done that, actual bloating of that, you want to be
- 22:41Present the offering on the plate.
- 22:44So whether I said, whether you Slaughter your own animal or
- 22:46bye-bye, it it's the bloat part of things.
- 22:52We've blessed everything already through the the bloating process
- 22:56and now we're into the offering. So the bloat is a meal, the
- 23:00offerings going to be a meal that you share with the gods.
- 23:03So you want to get some of the best portions of your meal,
- 23:08place it on the plate, put it on Or alter, and then that's the,
- 23:16you know, that's that's all set up before you start the rituals,
- 23:19that would during the ritual, it's already there.
- 23:20It's already set up. Finally, you'll want to get to
- 23:26the closing part. You're going to say, you know,
- 23:29thank the gods. Thank the ancestors.
- 23:31Thank the deity's for coming to your Sacred Space and sharing in
- 23:36this and accepting this gift. And then a lot of times folks
- 23:42will be very specific and say you know, this right has ended
- 23:48this blow, it has ended, the ritual is done something that
- 23:52indicates that we're over. It's over now and then a lot of
- 23:57folks will also bid farewell to the spirits that have arrived.
- 24:04So, you know, been farewell to the gods and their return
- 24:08Journey back to their To the sacred since they have come now
- 24:12to, to partake with you that them well on their Journeys
- 24:18back. But the, the spirits of the land
- 24:21peace, you basically just making it a solid indication that it's
- 24:26over now we're done. Thank you for coming.
- 24:29You are welcome to stay but you are not obligated to stay.
- 24:35So that's another neat. Touch that I would recommend.
- 24:40And Then you're going to go and you're going to eat your meal.
- 24:47You're going to partake in the meal, literally, you'll go and
- 24:51eat the food that was offered to the gods and if there's anything
- 24:56left over, if I guess if it's a one practice that I like to have
- 25:01is any meat offerings, I have I have animals and at home, you
- 25:09know, I have my pets. These are to me the
- 25:12representations of the they tear of the home and they are, are
- 25:19they are they are contained in these animals so I gift to them
- 25:24by feeding the the the dogs, some meat things that are
- 25:29healthy for them. If it's biodegradable vegetables
- 25:33fruits, things like that. You can leave it on your altar
- 25:36for the victor of the land to partake of it.
- 25:40As long as it's not anything that's toxic or harmful for the
- 25:45Vets here to consume because you don't want to do anything that's
- 25:47going to make them upset or make them feel ill or anything like
- 25:51that. And then again this is a this is
- 25:55an optional thing because it's it's really only kept
- 25:58historically for groups and that is sambal, which will be another
- 26:03discussion for another time. But some will is something that
- 26:07you would leave out if this is a Terry thing, if you're doing
- 26:14bloat, if you're doing a ritual as a family, for instance, if
- 26:18you are a husband wife children that sort of thing, any sort of
- 26:24relationship that you have with someone that you're doing it
- 26:26with multiple people, you can do sambal as a family but will that
- 26:33guy said, well, we'll get into talking about that.
- 26:36So at a different time so that is the Basically the meat and
- 26:41potatoes of what, to do for ritual, we're going to take
- 26:44another quick break. Here's some more words from some
- 26:48Heathen businesses. I don't want you guys to check
- 26:50out and then I will go back into sort of the sources of things,
- 26:55just to kind of give you guys a little bit of a background of
- 27:00what to wear or where I'm getting all this Source material
- 27:04from. So stick around, I'll be back.
- 27:06Thank you guys so much for listening.
- 27:13Hey everyone, thanks for listening to the podcast this
- 27:15far real quick. I just want to call your
- 27:17attention to a really neat, little blacksmith shop that I've

- 30:392020. So your support, there is
- 30:42greatly appreciated. Let's go ahead and wrap up this
- 30:45this week's episode on how to do ritual, okay, we've given you
- 30:49the You know, the what's it, what's needed, kind of giving
- 30:53you the how of what to do now, I'm just going to kind of go
- 30:57over the explanations of why the source materials why we do this?
- 31:04The way we do it. And again this is coming from a
- 31:06historical aspect, the right. So I am one of those middle of
- 31:11the road type heathens where I am not hardcore Recon, but I'd
- 31:15love to learn the historical facts and sources of things that
- 31:18way I can read. And like invigorate Heathen re
- 31:22today and use these time proven methods that my ancestors used
- 31:29to, you know, I guess I'd Revitalize Heathen re today at
- 31:34a, my own Twisted things. Add my own personal feelings and
- 31:37stuff to it, but still have a source or the roots that are
- 31:42honored. So, the one first part that we
- 31:45talked about, during the actual ritual was the creation of
- 31:48Sacred Space with fire. Okay, from ancient times,
- 31:53there's even a North Saga called length number book, which means
- 31:57land taking book when a person got a new home real and they
- 32:01created Sacred Space. When taking that new home,
- 32:05there's messages or stands as I should say in the different
- 32:13sagas I get again in London though my book there's a Saga
- 32:19called are big you Saga. There's some old Saxon or
- 32:25Anglo-Saxon sources the old Saxon Highland fit.
- 32:31Number two specifically this is the wise old man.
- 32:37Then brought in sense from there to the temple.
- 32:42Walking around the altar with his sensor powerfully serving
- 32:45devoutly. Carried out, his task performing
- 32:48God's ritual, Very eagerly with a clear mind.
- 32:51We're hearing about Sacred Space being created with the use of
- 32:57fire and incense. All right, so there's some some
- 32:59Source material that you can go to and find Historical backing
- 33:07as to why that's done the best historical example of bloating.
- 33:13Okay, we talked about that during the ritual of blooding or
- 33:17bloating, the area, the best historical Oracle example that
- 33:20you'll probably find is from The Saga of haakon, the good.
- 33:26And I believe, it's see chapter 16 says it was an old custom
- 33:32that when there was to be bloat, all the bonds should come to the
- 33:38spot where the temple stood and bring with them all that they
- 33:42required while the Festival of the bloat lasted to this
- 33:46Festival. All the men brought ale with
- 33:49them and Kinds of cattle, as well as Horses were slaughtered.
- 33:53And all the blood that came from them, was called Shoot and the
- 33:58vessels in which it was collected were called those
- 34:01vessels or bloat, bowls, hit stoves hotel, chains were made
- 34:07like sprinkling brushes again. This is the thing.
- 34:11We're talking about The Twig of the tree.
- 34:12So a lot of it, you know, you can use like, Pine branches
- 34:15Cedar. Anything kind of forces is
- 34:17great. With which the whole of the
- 34:22altars and the temple walls, both outside and inside were
- 34:26sprinkled over. And also the people were
- 34:29sprinkled with the blood but the flesh was boiled into Savory
- 34:32meat for those present. So there's a historical example
- 34:38of the process of bloating, why we do it that way in that form
- 34:44or fashion? It's the example that we have in
- 34:46The Saga of haakon, the good Altars or holders, you see, it's
- 34:55in the Hindi hindley load which is in the poetic Edda forget
- 35:05which stands of that is. But it's in Hindu youth.
- 35:08In the poetic Edda, it says he made a high altar of heaped up,
- 35:12Stones, the gathered rocks, have grown all bloody, and he
- 35:16reddened them again with the Fresh blood of cows.
- 35:20So there's a example of the Holger, the outdoor assembly of
- 35:26stones creating an altar, for an on which the offering was made.
- 35:34Okay. So there you have it.
- 35:40Everybody that is pretty much it.
- 35:42The process of doing ritual for those getting into Heathen, re
- 35:48Maybe, Then he them for some time and you're still
- 35:50perfecting, your are still kind of fine, tuning your processes.
- 35:54Here's a pretty good solid example of how to do ritual.
- 36:00Okay? So guys I would love to hear
