- 0:02Welcome in again everybody to the Terry
- 0:03Bowen Show on the Auburn Undercover
- 0:05podcast. I'm your co-host Ronnie Sanders
- 0:08and we've got a lot to talk about today.
- 0:09Uh before we get started, click like and
- 0:11subscribe below. It really helps us out.
- 0:13Keeps us in your feed. Uh coach
- 0:18lot to talk about today.
- 0:19>> Well, there sure is. I mean, obviously
- 0:21football fans have been able to watch
- 0:22the first round of the playoffs, you
- 0:24know, and so that was a exciting
- 0:26exciting football. I'm sad to say. I'm
- 0:29not sad to say. I I I make a I predict a
- 0:32winner in every game
- 0:33>> and I was one out of four. I mean, it
- 0:35it's hard to you talk about things that
- 0:37happen. Uh it's it was hard to pick them
- 0:40and so I've always felt like if I could
- 0:42be two out of five, two out of four, I'd
- 0:44be happy. I mean, because you got to
- 0:45pick with a spread. I have to pick and
- 0:47say, "Okay, I think this team will win
- 0:48by 13 or whatever." And so I go to bed I
- 0:51go to bed halftime of the uh Oregon
- 0:54James Madison game. Say, "Well, I'm two
- 0:55for two." I said that's not, you know, I
- 0:58mean, it cost me probably cost all it
- 0:59cost you is a juice. Everything's a
- 1:00push. I lost two games and I won two.
- 1:03Then I wake up the next morning and
- 1:05James Madison scores 28 points in the
- 1:07fourth quarter. Well, you know what? If
- 1:09people that watch I guess people that
- 1:11wager on games, which and I have not had
- 1:14a background of doing that because of
- 1:16being a coach. I mean, he pulled the
- 1:18players. He pulled he was he was 34
- 1:20points ahead right after halftime. So
- 1:23he's pulling everybody, you know, which
- 1:25you ought to do cuz it's not like it's
- 1:26he's got to he doesn't need beauty
- 1:28points at this point. You want to be
- 1:30ready for the next game.
- 1:31>> Yeah.
- 1:31>> And so as soon as he started pulling,
- 1:33you know how that go? As soon as you
- 1:34start pulling all your players, you lose
- 1:36any continuity. You lose that that
- 1:39togetherness and all of a sudden they
- 1:40start scoring and they got they got a
- 1:42decent team, but they can't play with
- 1:44Oregon. Oregon scored the first five
- 1:46drives. They scored, but all of a sudden
- 1:48they scored and they score. And I said,
- 1:50"Gee, many Chris, when you're talking
- 1:51about a long league in the playoffs,
- 1:54don't don't you better be careful about,
- 1:55you know, the the over is what you're
- 1:57talking about, you know, and and the uh
- 1:59uh the 21 points in the uh and then uh
- 2:03because he's it's more important for the
- 2:04quarterback, I mean, the coach to to
- 2:07rest his players and not get them hurt.
- 2:09>> And heck, he can't worry about that that
- 2:11that that spread, you know."
- 2:13>> No, I mean, and you know, I think he was
- 2:15he was playing 13 guys.
- 2:16>> Oh, no. that that that I think I'm I'm
- 2:19speaking more along the way because they
- 2:21were never in uh in doubt. The game was
- 2:23never in doubt. The point I'm trying to
- 2:25make and this and I'm I'm figuring this
- 2:29out more now that that that wagering is
- 2:31legal and everywhere and it's on phones
- 2:34and everybody's talking about it. You
- 2:35can't watch ESPN Sports Center uh and
- 2:37them predict a game without they cover
- 2:39the they they predict the spread every
- 2:41single game. Everybody has to predict
- 2:43it. So obviously if you think about it,
- 2:45and I'm retired, I guess I can talk
- 2:47about if you're a head coach, the one
- 2:49thing you ought to do is if you're if
- 2:50you're favored by a certain amount of
- 2:52points, do everything you can to score
- 2:54more than that much. Whatever it is, I
- 2:56don't care if you got to keep them in
- 2:57because most of your fans, they bet
- 2:59their heart too much. You know, most
- 3:01your fans that don't gamble, they still
- 3:03want to put their money on their own
- 3:04home team. And so all you can do
- 3:06without, if you're a coach, all you can
- 3:08do without cheating, without breaking
- 3:10rules is if whatever if it's 28, I'm
- 3:12gonna find a way to get 29. You know,
- 3:14I'm And I think Lane Keven went out
- 3:15there and said that in so many words
- 3:16this year, you know, in one of the
- 3:18games. He apologized to his fans for not
- 3:21covering the spread. And I said he
- 3:23probably said what most coaches are
- 3:25afraid to say. We know what the spread
- 3:27is because we know what people think we
- 3:29should win by and what we shouldn't win
- 3:32by. And I thought the Oregon game was a
- 3:34great example of it's hard to know what
- 3:36happens to me. If anybody thinks for a
- 3:38second you can figure it all out. I
- 3:40didn't take I knew that Oregon would
- 3:42kill him. I just I've watched both teams
- 3:43play a lot and Oregon is very talented
- 3:46and they've got a head coaches from the
- 3:48SEC that knows what he's doing and and
- 3:50they've got money galore and they got
- 3:54talent and they can run the football and
- 3:55they can play defense and and and James
- 3:58Madison is the is the class of of the
- 4:00Sunb Belt. But Sund hadn't been real
- 4:03good for two years now. I mean, Sigetti
- 4:04left and John Sallall and Troy left and
- 4:07uh South Alabama's coach went to
- 4:09Alabama's defensive coordinator and
- 4:11Georgia State's coach went to he left to
- 4:13go as a coordinator and and everything
- 4:16kind of got went downhill a little a
- 4:18little bit. Uh but James Madison was the
- 4:20was the class of the Sunb Belt, but
- 4:22that's not the Big 10. And the and the
- 4:25talent level was so different. It was
- 4:27going to be how many points. It was
- 4:29going to be just a question of points.
- 4:30But then you got to figure, okay, at
- 4:32what point do the points get so high
- 4:34that the head coach takes everybody out
- 4:37and all of a sudden those points they
- 4:39start going the other way real quick.
- 4:41>> I would think that that with two lane
- 4:42being in and James Madison and I
- 4:44understand that's the rule this year,
- 4:45but I I've got to think that that those
- 4:48rules have got to change. I
- 4:50>> and I I know there were blowouts last
- 4:52year, but at least it was, you know,
- 4:53most of it was was P4 teams. I'm I'm
- 4:56just not sure that,
- 4:57>> you know, I I watched James Madison in
- 5:00Oregon a little bit and I was kind of in
- 5:01and out after after
- 5:02>> Yeah, we I went to bed at halftime. You
- 5:04know, it's 30 34 to three at one time.
- 5:07They were up by 37 to or 38-3. It was
- 5:10like a 35 point spread for a while. Then
- 5:12they I think James Madison scored 28
- 5:14points in the fourth second half, you
- 5:16know.
- 5:16>> But but you know what?
- 5:17>> Two lane wasn't a whole lot better.
- 5:19Amazing.
- 5:19>> No, no. Both teams, both of these group
- 5:22of five teams, the power four teams, uh,
- 5:25Old Miss and Oregon, they scored right
- 5:27off the bat so easy. It was, it was
- 5:29over. It was over in a matter of minutes
- 5:31with, uh, seven plays, I think, with
- 5:34with Miss, seven plays, 14 points. Every
- 5:37play went for 20 yards. And Oregon
- 5:39started out about the same way. And it
- 5:41got a little bit slow for a little bit,
- 5:43but then it just it was just a matter it
- 5:44was always a matter of how bad they're
- 5:46going to get beat. So, I I agree with
- 5:47you. I think if we want to make it in
- 5:50all inclusive every to give the G5 one
- 5:53shot, you know, that that sounds good to
- 5:56me having coached a lot in G5 as well as
- 5:58power four. Um, but you get two teams
- 6:02stuck in there and they need to make
- 6:03sure that doesn't happen again because
- 6:04that's not what the that's not not 12
- 6:07top 12 teams.
- 6:08>> No doubt. And I you know I I'm not a
- 6:10defender of Notre Dame as as we've
- 6:11covered on here.
- 6:12>> No, I know.
- 6:13>> You know, not Notre Dame probably
- 6:15deserve to be in over both those teams.
- 6:17I mean,
- 6:18>> well, BYU, BYU, Notre Dame, I tell are
- 6:22were better than those teams, you know,
- 6:23and uh Michigan maybe if they had won
- 6:25one more game, you know, and the
- 6:27coaching key out of trouble, you know,
- 6:28they might have gotten a little farther
- 6:30along, but but you're right. I mean,
- 6:32it's and I don't think they anticipated
- 6:34that. I don't think the committee
- 6:35thought in a million years there'd be
- 6:37two group of five squads in there. And
- 6:39it won't I doubt it will happen again
- 6:40even if they didn't change the rules cuz
- 6:42what's the chance of the ACC having a a
- 6:46uh a team that low ranked winning
- 6:48winning eight going eight and five to
- 6:50winning the conference is not kind of
- 6:52>> similar situation at Florida. You know
- 6:53they they changed when when our I think
- 6:55it was 2003 they ended up changing the
- 6:58tiebreaker rule. Um there was kind of a
- 7:00convoluted, you know, there were three
- 7:01of us that ended up tying for the wet
- 7:03for the East when I was at Florida and
- 7:05it was and the SEC came in and changed
- 7:07and said, "Okay, we're going to do the
- 7:08highest ranked team goes."
- 7:10>> Yeah.
- 7:10>> And so, you know, we we were third, I
- 7:13think, by that by that point, but we
- 7:14tied for the East. And you know, Miami
- 7:17would would have should have gone over
- 7:18over Duke. And I you know, and we we've
- 7:21talked about it before, but I mean, the
- 7:22ACC did nothing but hurt itself.
- 7:25Yeah, they they did they hurt themselves
- 7:27and they did they they created a
- 7:29situation uh or they forced the
- 7:31committee to put to put two uh G5 teams
- 7:34in and so and and they both started out
- 7:36the game just like everybody thought
- 7:38they would start out. I mean it was it
- 7:40was not going to be close and it it
- 7:42nothing indicated that it would be
- 7:44close. I think people don't realize when
- 7:46a power four team plays a G5 team during
- 7:49the season to the beginning of the
- 7:51season, quite often it's just a power
- 7:54four team, not the not the the top
- 7:56eight. You're not the very top teams.
- 7:58And also, you don't really take them
- 8:01that serious that early in the year. You
- 8:02know, you kind of you can you can you
- 8:04can play a close game. Just don't take
- 8:06it serious. Now, when you're talking
- 8:07about a G5 team playing a power four in
- 8:10the final 12, you're getting the very
- 8:12best of of G4. I mean a power four,
- 8:15you're playing the very and they have to
- 8:17win that game and so you're getting
- 8:19their very best. And so it just there's
- 8:22>> Yeah. Well, you know, you're not quite
- 8:24old up and I'm I'm almost not, but 1978,
- 8:27you know, there was division one,
- 8:29division two, and division three. There
- 8:30were three levels of football up until I
- 8:33want to say 1978. And that could have
- 8:35been 77 because I want to say that was
- 8:37my senior year of college and I became a
- 8:40G and I became a GA in 79. But there was
- 8:43division one, two, and three. And that
- 8:45year they changed it and dropped so many
- 8:47schools whether it was 75 or something
- 8:49down to division 1A. They created 1A
- 8:52because I went to Florida State as a
- 8:54graduate assistant in 79 and I want to
- 8:56say Florida&M won the national
- 8:59championship at 1A. Rudy Rudy Rudy Huard
- 9:02Rudy Hubard was the head coach there and
- 9:04so that was the first time they had one
- 9:06doubleA and it made sense because those
- 9:08teams could never compete you know and
- 9:10it gave teams a ways of stepping down
- 9:13but now the other the other the other
- 9:15the top level still has 136 teams and I
- 9:18imagine we only had about 120 back then
- 9:21there's been an addition everybody wants
- 9:22to get into the money
- 9:24>> but as as what people don't understand
- 9:26is and I've coached at having coached at
- 9:28Akan and ULM them late in my career when
- 9:31I came back into coaching and having
- 9:33started out at Auburn. There's no
- 9:36comparison between the group of five in
- 9:38the SEC and the in the power forward. No
- 9:40comparison. No comparison on talent, on
- 9:43budget, on stadium size, on facilities,
- 9:47on anything. And now you add NIL to
- 9:50that, there still no comparison. And so,
- 9:52and yet we still call us all one group.
- 9:56Well, we want we want that because
- 9:57that's how we make our money. You know,
- 9:59I was when I was at ULM, we played
- 10:00Alabama, we played uh Oklahoma, we
- 10:02played Tennessee, we played we made
- 10:04money. We played Penn State twice at
- 10:06Akan. We made And when you're when
- 10:08you're at one, I mean, group of four,
- 10:10you want to play a big stadium team
- 10:12because they're going to pay you over a
- 10:13million, you know. Uh and so none of us
- 10:16want to be kicked out of 1A. But the
- 10:18reality is is that there really is about
- 10:20two divisions. There are two divisions
- 10:22of schools. And the question is it we
- 10:25when we get to a 12 team playoffs how
- 10:28important it is to pretend that there's
- 10:30not two different divisions, you know,
- 10:33>> to show you to show you the difference.
- 10:34I I'll go back to our friend Rick
- 10:35Tricket
- 10:37he's coaching at Jacksonville State and
- 10:38had a chance to go to West Virginia with
- 10:40with Rich Rodriguez and
- 10:41>> right
- 10:42>> he said and he's told me more than once.
- 10:43He said
- 10:44>> and I'll leave out the expletives but he
- 10:46said you know I'm not coaching I'm not
- 10:48coaching any player that makes more than
- 10:49I do and that's right.
- 10:50>> You know I think he's really enjoying it
- 10:52at Jacksonville State. He's 77. Um, but
- 10:55uh, you know, he's he's old school now.
- 10:57>> Well, you know that that and that we're
- 10:59talking about another point, but I'm I'm
- 11:00right with him there because I started
- 11:01out moving toward that power force level
- 11:04in my early early career because I had
- 11:0615 years as a head coach before I before
- 11:08I went to 10 years of broadcasting at
- 11:10ABC. And it was always get to the power
- 11:13for get to get to the SEC, get to the
- 11:15top level. And that's where I wanted to
- 11:16go. But after spending 10 years in
- 11:19television, a long time, people don't
- 11:21usually even go back into coaching once
- 11:23they've been out that long. But that's
- 11:25when that's
- 11:26>> well there that talked to me and Dick
- 11:27Vill were there and there were a lot of
- 11:29guys that were that got stuck. I mean
- 11:31there was I mean New Hisel was just
- 11:33getting stuck and they were all how can
- 11:35we go back and we everybody wanted to go
- 11:36back at the same level that they started
- 11:38you know but they've been out for 10
- 11:40years. You you don't do that. And so I
- 11:42finally made I made good money and I
- 11:44said, "You know what? I go I'm gonna go
- 11:45back and retire coaching again." And so
- 11:47I didn't care. I wanted I said I went
- 11:49back to division two. I said, "Let's go
- 11:50start over and have a good time." And
- 11:52because I love that I love being North
- 11:53Alabama there, three years, seven years
- 11:55at Akran. Uh we had our best years ever.
- 11:58And then u and finished up at ULM and uh
- 12:01ulm really the hardest one that I had.
- 12:03But the point was we were never those
- 12:05schools. You're you're in 1A, you're at
- 12:07top level, but you know there's not a
- 12:09top level. and and I'm defender of that
- 12:12level because I'm we needed the money.
- 12:14ULM's the lowest budget in the country
- 12:15when I was at Louisiana Monroe and uh
- 12:19we'd make 1.5 million cuz people if you
- 12:22have a bad record those people want you
- 12:24on their schedule. I promise you you can
- 12:25play the best teams in America if you
- 12:27got a bad schedule. Uh and so I can't
- 12:30when I got to ulm they were 0 and 11. So
- 12:32we had some pretty good teams. Uh but
- 12:34the point point being we need the money
- 12:36you know. So so we don't want them to
- 12:37kick us out of 1A. Well, the answer
- 12:40could be we'll form a 1A and a 1A B,
- 12:42whatever you call it, and still let them
- 12:44count as us as a as a win. You know, the
- 12:47problem is if you go to one AA, they
- 12:50don't they can't count you as a uh uh as
- 12:52a 1A win. And they got to have uh
- 12:55they're allowed to have what one AA win
- 12:58uh every year and counted. Well, so you
- 13:00don't want to be
- 13:01>> Now you're looking at, you know, nine
- 13:03conference games and you're you're
- 13:05usually playing another power four team.
- 13:06So, you know, you've got two that, you
- 13:08know, Auburn has scheduled, I believe,
- 13:10Troy, which is, you know, which is
- 13:12>> right before, and you've got Alabama
- 13:15State and Alabama&M. And Auburn Auburn a
- 13:17few years ago said, "Hey, we're going to
- 13:18play every uh every team in the state,
- 13:20whether it's UNA or Troy or uh you know,
- 13:24you you know, Alabama&M or whoever." And
- 13:27so, they they've been kind of rotating
- 13:28through that for the last few years.
- 13:29Well, and and to make it understandable
- 13:31to other people, if you play a onea,
- 13:33which would be uh a oneA would be
- 13:36Alabama A&M or Alabama State, they can't
- 13:39demand as much money because they can't
- 13:41ever count as a they don't count as a
- 13:42division one team necessarily. Now, if
- 13:45you're a Troy or a South Al, you can
- 13:47demand more money. They give they give
- 13:49you more because they they they don't
- 13:51have to worry about whether they counted
- 13:52as a 1A or not. So, it's it's it's a 1A
- 13:54team. So, um, but you want to be a 1A
- 13:58because you make more money that way.
- 14:00And I guess the point I'm trying to make
- 14:02when it comes to playoffs is that I I
- 14:05wouldn't be shocked at some point that
- 14:07we don't say we really have two
- 14:09divisions here and each team can have
- 14:11you've got 75 or 80 at the power four
- 14:13level and 75 or so at the power five
- 14:17level and they can have their own 12
- 14:19team playoff and do it that way. uh
- 14:21might be a solution where you've got a
- 14:23chance to be the best in the country at
- 14:26with people who are like you. You know,
- 14:28as it's a little different than
- 14:29basketball, I think, you know, everybody
- 14:31everybody wants to be like Hoosiers, you
- 14:33know, everybody saw the movie Hoosiers,
- 14:35just a little school. You put a put
- 14:37Larry Bird in a little school and see if
- 14:39they don't play for the national
- 14:40championship. I believe Illinois State
- 14:41played for the national championship one
- 14:43year. Larry Bird was on their team. You
- 14:45know, it doesn't happen in at Illinois
- 14:47State in football. I promise you, they
- 14:48don't beat
- 14:50>> Yes.
- 14:51Did I say he was on Indiana State? I'm
- 14:54sorry. Uh and I didn't I saw fact I see
- 14:56so many dead gum podcast. He's on every
- 14:59dead gum podcast there is all Larry Bird
- 15:02at Indiana State. But that's what they
- 15:04he had him in the championship, you
- 15:05know. But anyway, that being said, it
- 15:07was a uh uh uh uh playoffs were a pretty
- 15:11good situation. Uh um speaking speaking
- 15:14of of uh of G4 um you know Byron Brown
- 15:18South Florida quarterback uh has hit the
- 15:20portal uh goal it's huge for you know
- 15:24Auburn
- 15:25>> yeah and obviously you know nothing can
- 15:27get done officially until the portal
- 15:28opens but I would guess that
- 15:31>> I I would guess he already knows where
- 15:32he's going. That's difficult.
- 15:34>> Well, I mean, yeah. I mean, that's when
- 15:36I when I saw that, I said, "Okay,
- 15:38everybody at Auburn has got to sit back
- 15:39and just pay attention because whatever
- 15:42happens is going to make some people
- 15:44happy and some people not, but the head
- 15:46coach is going to do what he's got to
- 15:47do." The Byron Brown, one of the top
- 15:49quarterbacks in the country. He's a dual
- 15:51threat. Uh he's an NFL caliber. He has
- 15:53great running skills, great passing
- 15:55skills. I was looking at some some of
- 15:57his stats were were are out there, you
- 15:59know, for total yardage passing, total
- 16:01rushing yards. um how he's ranked. He's
- 16:04got one more year of eligibility, and he
- 16:07jumps in the portal with one year left.
- 16:09Now, that's his head coach is at Auburn,
- 16:12his quarterback coach is at Auburn, and
- 16:14his play call is at Auburn. So, I would
- 16:16imagine if Auburn wants him,
- 16:19they would have to tell him he's going
- 16:20to start. He's only got one more year of
- 16:22eligibility.
- 16:24>> And you got a whole night.
- 16:26>> Well, no. Well, you as I say,
- 16:28something's got to give here. You can't
- 16:31the minute you say yes, we're going to
- 16:32bring him in. I now deuce is Duce the
- 16:35freshman. He's the young one, isn't he?
- 16:36>> He's the young one, so he'll be and he
- 16:39red shirted, you know. He he he So he
- 16:41he's he'll be a red shirt freshman
- 16:42coming in.
- 16:43>> So I'm saying he's got enough time to be
- 16:45patient if he would. But I'm saying is
- 16:47you nobody's going to get Byron Brown
- 16:50without almost promising him he's got to
- 16:53start a job because he's only got one
- 16:55year left. He stayed right where he is.
- 16:57He's probably making good money and he's
- 16:59going to be have, you know, he's had
- 17:00great success there and I'm sure some
- 17:02coaches stayed around. Um, but
- 17:07>> in in the quarterback room, you know, I
- 17:08mean, there's been a ton of quarter
- 17:10turnover in the quarterback room. I
- 17:11mean, you've got Jackson Arnold who's
- 17:13going to hit the portal. You've got
- 17:15Ashton Daniels who hit the portal. You
- 17:16had three. I mean, your entire
- 17:18quarterback room was new last year. Now,
- 17:19if assuming you can hold on to Duce
- 17:20Knight, you're still going to bring in,
- 17:22you know, at least two new guys. How
- 17:24many quarterback? you got a new system
- 17:25and also it's a whole new notebook now
- 17:27and and and and read the article on on
- 17:29on Auburn undercover today. I think I
- 17:32read it today about the process that uh
- 17:35uh Gish talks about having a process. He
- 17:37says the most important hires was are a
- 17:40very important hire was quarterback,
- 17:43play caller, head coach the day we put
- 17:47our first day of install. The first time
- 17:49we meet, we're all on the same page. We
- 17:52don't have to change anything. We all
- 17:53know what we're talking about. Well,
- 17:54throw your starting quarterback in with
- 17:56that. Now there now you now the day you
- 17:58come here, you're he knows exactly your
- 18:01language. He knows exactly what your
- 18:02philosophy is. He knows what the head
- 18:04coach is thinking. He knows what the
- 18:06coordinator is thinking. Um now the
- 18:08question is they've got to evaluate him
- 18:11compared to the Auburn's quarterback.
- 18:13Not other G5 quarterbacks, but Auburn's
- 18:16quarterbacks. Is he better than than
- 18:17Ashton Daniels or is he better than Duce
- 18:19Knight? you know, um and uh um and and
- 18:23if we go after him cuz we're going to
- 18:25lose one of those and you you may lose
- 18:27both. I don't know. you I mean that's
- 18:28the the reality is you got to make a
- 18:30decision and and and Auburn people
- 18:33better be ready for anything because as
- 18:35a head football coach who called plays
- 18:38and who came to Auburn under almost the
- 18:40exact same situation uh although I came
- 18:42from a Sam Sanford kept my Jimbo my
- 18:45quarterback coach kept Tommy Bowen who
- 18:47was he understood every play that I ran
- 18:49because he ran the same stuff he grew up
- 18:52running it he didn't run it he was he
- 18:53was Pat Dy's offensive coordinator and
- 18:55didn't run those plays for Pat but He he
- 18:58knew what I would run. So I came in I
- 19:00wanted the same people around me, you
- 19:01know. I wanted people around me that
- 19:03understood my and cricket and I got
- 19:04cricket. Those three especially were
- 19:07running our stuff. Um
- 19:08>> how did you know cricket from West
- 19:10Virginia?
- 19:11>> Trick. Oh yeah. Oh no. When I Yeah. When
- 19:13I played at West Virginia, so my dad
- 19:14left to go to Florida State and and
- 19:17Tommy and I stayed on West Virginia. Uh
- 19:19Frank Signetti, Kurt's dad became the
- 19:21head coach. He was he was the offensive
- 19:23coordinator. Well, the first person
- 19:24Frank hired was Nick Sabin and uh uh
- 19:28Rick Trickett. You know, they're both
- 19:30about 25 They're both about 25 years
- 19:32old. I tell you, Trick may have been a
- 19:34little older. He may be a little bit
- 19:36older than uh Nick. I don't know. But
- 19:38they were they were they were on on the
- 19:39next
- 19:40>> 72 and I think Trick is 77, I believe.
- 19:43Maybe 73 now. But
- 19:44>> yeah, right right around there. And uh
- 19:46but because I'm 69. So So anyway, that's
- 19:49how I got to know them. But the point I
- 19:51think we're all got to consider and I
- 19:52think everybody's going to be it's going
- 19:54to be all over tomorrow. It's going it's
- 19:55going to be discussed all over all over
- 19:56the website. I promise you is uh what if
- 19:59you if you with once he jumps in that
- 20:02means every other team that's behind
- 20:05Auburn's back talking to your
- 20:07quarterbacks
- 20:08uh which or their agents or their dads
- 20:11or their best friend or their high
- 20:13school coach who whatever they can do to
- 20:15keep from being illegal you know and
- 20:16keep from doing it properly. Everybody's
- 20:18talked to, I promise you, before they
- 20:20jump in, you know, uh, and somebody's
- 20:22jumped and somebody's talked to Byron
- 20:24Brown probably, you know, in fact, a lot
- 20:26of teams have because I mean, he is a
- 20:28really really good quarterback, you
- 20:30know. I think I think it would be I
- 20:32think it would be um smart if you're a
- 20:35close a good Auburn football fan, just
- 20:37jump on the the uh YouTube and watch his
- 20:40highlights and so what see if you like
- 20:42what you see. He's 6'3, 230 lbs. And uh
- 20:46and I think I think it's pretty legit.
- 20:48It is size-wise. It may not you know
- 20:50that sometimes they're 6'2 or whatever,
- 20:52but he's tall and he is physical
- 20:54looking. Uh and
- 20:56>> Cam Newton may not
- 20:57>> Well, you know what? Until I came to the
- 20:59until I came to the uh Georgia game and
- 21:02I was on the radio uh uh pregame right
- 21:05before Cam and I stood right next to
- 21:07Cam, there ain't many like Cam. I'm
- 21:09going to tell you right now, there's
- 21:11there's not many quarterbacks physically
- 21:14as uh impressive as Cam Newton because
- 21:17he's he looks like a defensive end. You
- 21:18know, that's But but but but that being
- 21:21said, Byron Brown has those type of
- 21:23physical characteristics and he can
- 21:25throw it and he's been he's been dynamic
- 21:27for three years. You know, he's he
- 21:29played just a little bit as a freshman.
- 21:31Then he's he's put some numbers up that
- 21:33are just very very impressive. Uh, and
- 21:36so I would it would be it would be worth
- 21:38your while as an Auburn fan to go out
- 21:41there and look at all your highlights
- 21:42and figure out because I'll be honest
- 21:44with you as a head coach I wouldn't
- 21:46begin to tell you what the head coach at
- 21:48what what goalish is going to do. I
- 21:50wouldn't that's that's their
- 21:51prerogative. But I can't imagine they
- 21:53wouldn't want to bring their own
- 21:54quarterback in and him being as with him
- 21:58being as talented as he is now. I think
- 22:01every coach that comes into Auburn, just
- 22:03like when I came in, you there are
- 22:05people on your old staff you'd like to
- 22:06bring in and you can't because you got
- 22:09you got more money. You got you can hire
- 22:10the best in the country because I think
- 22:12if you'll read the other article on on
- 22:14on on Auburn undercover today that
- 22:16talked about the process he the process
- 22:19that that Gouish has, it's making sure
- 22:22every coach is the best he can possibly
- 22:24hire at at his position for our program.
- 22:28you know, if he he's got the ability to
- 22:30hire him.
- 22:31>> Something before before we came on
- 22:33about,
- 22:34>> you know, uh, you know, putting together
- 22:37uh, you know, getting your it really
- 22:38reminds me a lot of the staff that you
- 22:40put together at all. You had had young
- 22:43guys on offense, young guys that because
- 22:44you got a uh, but you got an experienced
- 22:46guy on defense, but offensively, I mean,
- 22:49you got a young coordinator, you got a
- 22:50young offensive line coach. I mean,
- 22:52those guys are and you got Cody Burns
- 22:54who's not very old either, right? But
- 22:56he's put together a a pretty impressive
- 22:58staff. I mean, you look at you know,
- 23:00former coordinators, you know, I mean,
- 23:02really uh, you know, really it it it
- 23:05doesn't seem like uh, and in a change
- 23:08from the past, and I won't call any
- 23:09names, it really seems like he he
- 23:11doesn't really care who gets the credit.
- 23:12You know, if guys get jobs and move and
- 23:14move on, then that means they've done a
- 23:16good job. Kind of like kind of like
- 23:17coach Sabin. I mean, you know, you want
- 23:19you want to help guys and you want them.
- 23:22>> If you get good people, they're going to
- 23:23move now. They're going to get head
- 23:24jobs. are going to move. Uh, and I'll
- 23:27tell you the problem at Auburn is it's
- 23:29and it has changed. I mean, it's grown.
- 23:31It's it's hard to leave Auburn. Even
- 23:34when your career tells you it's time to
- 23:36move move mo if you're going to be
- 23:38mobile as a as an assistant, there are
- 23:40times when it's time to move if you're
- 23:42going to get that coordinator title. But
- 23:44I I know from experience it's it's it
- 23:46was such a great place to live and the
- 23:48Lake Martin right close by. even your
- 23:50kids and your family in this in the
- 23:52town. you you get you fall in love with
- 23:54that town and you and you got to
- 23:56understand you're a football coach and
- 23:58sometimes the only way to move up from a
- 24:00segment to a coordinator position or
- 24:03whatever is by being mobile and uh but
- 24:06anyway I think that to put to wrap it
- 24:09all up or put a bow on it I think
- 24:12without a doubt Galish is very happy
- 24:14that he could keep his defensive
- 24:15coordinator uh and some then some
- 24:18coaches around him that that fit in. I
- 24:20think once you get once like once I got
- 24:21Wayne Hall to stay on and Joe Wit, then
- 24:25it was just fitting people in. Kurt
- 24:26Crane putting
- 24:28>> What was that conversation like with
- 24:29with Wayne Hall for some Auburn people
- 24:31that I mean you come in and and you know
- 24:34obviously thought he was going to be the
- 24:35next guy. Um
- 24:36>> yeah, that that that was tough. Wayne
- 24:38had Wayne had to really It was tough on
- 24:41Wayne and it was tough on you know it
- 24:43was it was tough on me. Do I bring a guy
- 24:46in that's well-loved that that people
- 24:48that people here felt was going to be
- 24:50the wanted my that people here thought
- 24:52should have the job that I had. Uh and
- 24:54then two, he he here's a job he worked
- 24:57all of his life for, was ready for, was
- 24:59building up for, and they passed him
- 25:02over. And uh
- 25:03>> you really have a choice considering the
- 25:05the probation and you know
- 25:07>> Well, I I won't Yeah, I don't need to
- 25:09get in all that, but the point was he
- 25:11had to How about my brother? I can I'm
- 25:13going to go Tommy next. So, but he I
- 25:15just but I've said Wayne, you know, I
- 25:17think we I think you'll like working
- 25:19with me. I think Goalish would have the
- 25:21same discussion with Durkin because I
- 25:22believe Durkin was considered for the
- 25:24head job,
- 25:25>> but Goalish can look him in the eye and
- 25:27say, you know what, let me run the
- 25:28offense. You run that defense and you
- 25:30and you run it like you want to run it
- 25:31and on Thursday I'll sit with you and
- 25:33you can tell me what you're going to do
- 25:34so I can have a good press conference
- 25:36and know what to know what we're doing,
- 25:37you know. Um, so I I would think Gouish
- 25:40and Durkin would have had the same
- 25:42conversations, but I can't tell you. I
- 25:44just know Wayne probably had to suck up
- 25:46and and say, "You know what? I'm I I
- 25:48love being here." Um um nobody Terry
- 25:52Bowen I I couldn't control what
- 25:53happened, you know, u and how it was
- 25:56going down. And so that was it. That so
- 25:58so it worked out great, but it was a
- 26:00very difficult to to have to go through
- 26:02that. Maybe even more difficult or as as
- 26:06difficult was my brother Tommy. Tommy
- 26:08had been
- 26:09>> Tommy had Tommy was well he was hired
- 26:11here as as as the offensive coordinator
- 26:13for Pat Dy and the the day he got here
- 26:17all that Pat that Ramsay stuff came out
- 26:19and the and the it was it was ne almost
- 26:22negative every day. It was terrible
- 26:23situation. Nobody uh it was just
- 26:26difficult for everybody to face or it
- 26:28was just it was a bad time, you know,
- 26:30cuz it ended up Eric Ramsey ended up
- 26:31being nothing a nothing is that a
- 26:33nothing burger compared to the realities
- 26:35of this business. But at that point it
- 26:37wasn't. But here's Tommy when I hire him
- 26:41now. He's he's worked his way up. He's
- 26:43older than I am. He's worked his way up
- 26:45and now now he's got to go be an
- 26:47assistant to his younger brother.
- 26:48>> When he told me when I'm sitting in his
- 26:50office one day when I'm I was a I was
- 26:52still a student. I remember one day and
- 26:54>> he said, you know, I I said, how I said,
- 26:56how was that? You were already here. And
- 26:58he said, yeah. He said, one day I'm
- 27:00sitting here and I think maybe I got a
- 27:01chance to be the head coach here. And he
- 27:02said, you know, next day I'm working for
- 27:04my baby brother.
- 27:06Well, thank goodness thank goodness I
- 27:08wasn't 10 years younger. I was only two.
- 27:10But but we I didn't none of us could
- 27:13control either of those situations. But
- 27:16you try to do what's best for the
- 27:17program. I mean, first of all, I I knew
- 27:19the kind of coach my brother was, how
- 27:21good he was. uh although we didn't work
- 27:23together except as graduate assistants
- 27:25um um and I knew the success Auburn had
- 27:28with with Wayne Hall on defense. I guess
- 27:31to to bring this all together, when you
- 27:33look at the way uh Gullish hired a staff
- 27:36and then you read the article today uh
- 27:39uh uh on the Albert website and on your
- 27:41website how much the process starts with
- 27:45hiring the staff quickly and hiring the
- 27:47right people and uh he was talking and
- 27:50how important that were and it almost
- 27:52was the same he went the same way I did
- 27:54on the on the thing, you know, and and
- 27:56and and brought in people that he could
- 27:58uh uh work the offense with and that cuz
- 28:00he he play he he plays around with the
- 28:02offense. Although I don't think he says
- 28:03he calls the plays. I think he hired his
- 28:05co and that there's nothing wrong with
- 28:08that. I mean you can you can be an
- 28:09offensive coach and not call the plays
- 28:12but most of the offensive coaches that
- 28:14are really come from being a coordinator
- 28:16a long time. uh they're going to call
- 28:19plays, you know, and then you then maybe
- 28:21you might turn the Spurer the Spurer
- 28:23type and the Mike Leech type and the
- 28:25guys Riley and the guys that call plays
- 28:27forever, you know, that that are good at
- 28:29it and make their mark, they don't give
- 28:30it up very easily. is speaking of guys
- 28:32who call plays about Bobby Patrino about
- 28:35to head to North Carolina that ought to
- 28:36be uh that ought to be
- 28:38>> well you know if you think of all the
- 28:41ways all the head coaches that would not
- 28:43be intimidated by Bobby Patrino but not
- 28:45because that's a he's a guy that I would
- 28:47think could intimidate you uh if you're
- 28:49a young head coach and you couldn't work
- 28:51with him. It's not that he would be mean
- 28:53or or or be negative consider.
- 28:56>> Yeah. I mean, he he's I can see, hey,
- 28:59hey, I can see his first comments being,
- 29:01hey, we're going to do it my way. You
- 29:02can hire me if you want to, but we're
- 29:03going to do this my way. Well, the one
- 29:05guy you probably wouldn't say that to
- 29:06just quite like that would would be uh
- 29:09uh the head coach they've got there,
- 29:11Belch. Yeah, you Belch would say, "No,
- 29:13no, I've been around doing this longer
- 29:15than you have. We're going to do it my
- 29:16way." You know,
- 29:19>> Yeah. Yeah. I got he got rings on every
- 29:20finger. When they shake hands, it breaks
- 29:22the other hand because got those
- 29:24championship rings on all those fingers.
- 29:25But anyway, that would that's that's but
- 29:27but I think that would be a if there was
- 29:29ever going to be a fit for him, that
- 29:31would be a pretty good fit for Patrino
- 29:33because I think he's still trying to to
- 29:35uh to massage that reputation and and
- 29:38get it fixed to get back at a head
- 29:40coaching position, you know.
- 29:41>> Yeah. And he and he's, you know, he he's
- 29:43uh I think he wants one more shot. I
- 29:45think if he more in Arkansas, you know,
- 29:47he probably would have ended up with
- 29:48that job, you know, and and we talked
- 29:50about we talked about this what I was
- 29:51going to mention while ago. We talked
- 29:53about process before we come on before
- 29:55we came on the air. Um, like you said,
- 29:57you know,
- 29:58>> Sabin kind of talked about process.
- 30:01That's the that's the new word. U like
- 30:04you said, it's really just a plan. I
- 30:05mean, you got
- 30:06>> you got have a plan. Well, and and Sabin
- 30:10Sabin, he was using he used the word
- 30:12process process. And of course,
- 30:14everybody that ever worked for him uses
- 30:15the word process. But back when Tommy
- 30:17and I were coach, y'all give me an
- 30:18example. My dad had had he was he he was
- 30:21doing a notebook. We're talking about
- 30:22197879.
- 30:25I mean, probably doing it before that,
- 30:26but we were players. We we didn't see
- 30:28it. The players don't get the process
- 30:29book, the notebook, the plan. The
- 30:31coaches get a big thick notebook, spiral
- 30:34notebook, and we have every day. We have
- 30:36what we have the plan for 365 days a
- 30:39year. Mhm.
- 30:40>> And we go through we when we meet in
- 30:42August, we go through every month and we
- 30:45know when signing date is. We know when
- 30:47this spring break is, we know when
- 30:49spring ball starts, we know when spring
- 30:51ball ends, we know when every game's
- 30:52going to be played, we know uh if we go
- 30:55to this bowl or that bowl, you know,
- 30:56there's got to be some blanks in there
- 30:58for for specific things that happen. But
- 31:00you you go over every month of the year,
- 31:04and that's your process, and that's the
- 31:05process. And then you go over with your
- 31:07strength program. this is the process
- 31:09for how we're going to take freshmen and
- 31:10make them stronger. Then you go over
- 31:12your academic plan and that's one whole
- 31:14chapter and it goes from everything in
- 31:16there, you know, and so and then and
- 31:18that notebook
- 31:19>> all that. Well, I've still got books
- 31:20with all that stuff in there from LSU
- 31:22and Florida and you know I'm too young
- 31:24to have Auburn, but when I but uh all
- 31:26the others I I've still got them in in
- 31:28bins out here in my uh I guess.
- 31:30>> Well, let me tell let me how tell it was
- 31:33when when Tommy and I were gas. We
- 31:35worked for my dad and my dad would spend
- 31:38uh the week be we called it hideaway and
- 31:40you probably went that through with a
- 31:42week that the coaches got together
- 31:44before the players arrived and we would
- 31:45go over the plan the process
- 31:47>> we went to the beach
- 31:47>> the process at the beach we well well
- 31:49well Tommy and my dad and I at the beach
- 31:52that was that was even before the week
- 31:54that was when we were just with family
- 31:56but when we got our coaches together for
- 31:57a week in August uh it would be or July
- 32:00the last week of July uh we would go
- 32:03over every our our plan our our notebook
- 32:05book and if you'll read again uh uh
- 32:09Golish was talking about that today
- 32:10having that plan that notebook and that
- 32:12stuff. So we would go over that whole
- 32:14thing. But the funny story is so Tommy
- 32:17and I go our separate ways, you know,
- 32:18coaching. Well, I go to Salem College
- 32:21and and I and I work on my notebook and
- 32:23it's always got quotes from the head
- 32:25coach and I So every year the notebook
- 32:27is thicker and you add a little bit of
- 32:29your stuff or you to some stuff out. You
- 32:31you change some of your philosophy and
- 32:34you have quotes that you really like and
- 32:36say that you really like and uh and some
- 32:38of them are actually your own. Most of
- 32:40them that's an old John Wooden Wooden
- 32:42story. That's an old Vince Lombardi
- 32:44state, but you know, whatever. But
- 32:45anyway, so all those years for 15 years
- 32:48I had been there. Uh but well, 10 years
- 32:50before I came to Auburn. So when I come
- 32:52to Auburn, uh and I put the notebook out
- 32:55there for every coach to have, Tommy
- 32:56sees it, and it's pretty much what he
- 32:58has always had too before before I I got
- 33:01back there. But now he's got it again.
- 33:03But now it's got a lot of my quotes.
- 33:04Over the last 10 years, I've been
- 33:06putting my own quotes and my own words
- 33:07in it. And so that but we used that that
- 33:09was our process. That was the notebook.
- 33:11That was how we were going to recruit.
- 33:13That was how we were going to have a
- 33:14strength program, academic program,
- 33:16offensively, defensively, all of our
- 33:18coaching points. So, so finally after uh
- 33:21n in 2019, I become an analyst at
- 33:25Clemson and I'm an analyst for for Davos
- 33:27Sweeney. And so we so for Hideaway. So
- 33:30we had to have our one week meetings
- 33:32before the players came in. And so I'm
- 33:35sitting in the back and he's passing out
- 33:36the notebooks. And but of course by the
- 33:38time Davo gets them they're like they're
- 33:40like uh I mean that I mean it's like a
- 33:42big notebook you know Davo can can he
- 33:46can extend he can he can add to it. Uh
- 33:49he's not verbose but he has he has a lot
- 33:51of philosophy and I love everything
- 33:52almost all of them. Anyway we go. So as
- 33:55a staff we're all he's got 40 or 50
- 33:57people now. You know now when you and I
- 33:59were going there was maybe 15 people in
- 34:00there but there's about 50 people now.
- 34:03But the f we're we're going through the
- 34:04notebook at at Clemson's notebook and
- 34:07he's got all these famous quotes and and
- 34:10I bet I bet five or six of them were
- 34:11mine. They were mine that they were to
- 34:14they were mine that Tommy took with him
- 34:15to Clemson to to lane and then Tommy
- 34:18took them to Clemson and then when Tommy
- 34:20left and Dabau took over Dabau to put
- 34:23them in his notebook and so I'm sitting
- 34:25there as a as an analyst like in the
- 34:27back row you know and here's Dabau. We
- 34:29just won a couple of national
- 34:30championships and he's quoting me on a
- 34:32couple. He didn't even know he's quoting
- 34:34me on a couple of those things, you
- 34:35know. And I I laughed to myself and
- 34:37said, "That's the process that we all
- 34:39have." Uh,
- 34:40>> now did you did you get another master's
- 34:43degree at Clinton? How many degrees do
- 34:44you have now?
- 34:45>> I have way too many. I got my only
- 34:48master's degree at Clint. Well, you
- 34:49know, that's another story now. When
- 34:51we'll get to That's a funny story,
- 34:52though.
- 34:53uh because I had I'm over I'm
- 34:56overeducated a little bit uh for
- 34:58coaching. But um u but anyway that
- 35:01that's the process that we're talking
- 35:02about and and uh because remind me to
- 35:04get back to that story. That's a cute
- 35:06the story about about Clemson. Um um um
- 35:10but anyway the but go but Golish has got
- 35:13a quarterback coach. He's got a play
- 35:15caller. He's got his uh offensive
- 35:17coordinator
- 35:19uh and and his um and the line coach
- 35:22that he wants and they brought his line
- 35:23coach with him from South Florida as
- 35:25well.
- 35:25>> He looks like he might not be I'm not
- 35:27sure exactly how old he is, but he looks
- 35:28like he might might be 30.
- 35:32>> Well, you know the Well, I I was 36. So,
- 35:35when I got to when I got to uh Aubrey,
- 35:37Jimbo wasn't 30 now. He He was probably
- 35:39still in his 20s. Yeah, he was probably
- 35:41still in his 20s. The rest of us were
- 35:43early 30s. Uh but he was he was that and
- 35:46uh uh when he got in. So it's so he's
- 35:48got that going. So I think the process
- 35:49there um is where he wants it. And I
- 35:52think Byron Brown that that does put an
- 35:55interesting kink kink in the uh not a
- 35:57kink, it puts an interesting uh um event
- 36:00that's going to affect the future at
- 36:02Auburn, you know, because like
- 36:03>> people are upset right now because of
- 36:05all these kids hitting the portal and I
- 36:06think around 20 21 something like that.
- 36:08But I mean that's the nature of college
- 36:10football now. I mean at least you don't
- 36:11have 50 yet, you know. I mean, you're
- 36:13going to end up with probably 50, 60 new
- 36:15players at Colorado. I'm not sure what
- 36:16Florida State looks like. Um, and I
- 36:19look, and for all the players at
- 36:20Auburn's losing, you got $30 million
- 36:23spend on the roster next year,
- 36:25>> right? Everybody lose, you got more
- 36:26money. Yeah. Right.
- 36:27>> Yeah. Don't don't think Auburn's not,
- 36:28you know, for those people listening,
- 36:29don't don't think Auburn's not out there
- 36:31getting ready to sign a bunch of guys. I
- 36:32mean, just because you you let you had a
- 36:34great player leave. Uh, and and because
- 36:36he enters the portal doesn't mean he
- 36:37can't come back. But just because you
- 36:38have a great player leave, somebody else
- 36:40had a great player leave, too. You may
- 36:41go get him. I mean,
- 36:44>> well, that that that that's the thing is
- 36:46I mean, young man, now the young man has
- 36:49to understand that uh uh if he's going
- 36:52to take advantage of this of the NIL and
- 36:55the policy now, he's got to jump in the
- 36:56portal and then he's got to let people
- 36:58know he's going to jump because he's not
- 36:59they're not in the portal yet. They're
- 37:00they've announced they're going to jump
- 37:02in, right? That's kind of the way it is.
- 37:03They've announced they're going to jump
- 37:04in the first day. Well, that lets people
- 37:06evaluate them and let they they want
- 37:08people to think about them and evaluate
- 37:09them. Well, I would imagine uh Coach
- 37:12Kohish is probably doing the same thing.
- 37:14I don't think necessarily when you come
- 37:15into a program, you get say you have
- 37:18your first team meeting say you guys
- 37:19jump a portal, you're gone. I don't
- 37:21know, maybe you did. I just don't think
- 37:22you do that right now. I think you
- 37:23probably you say you probably sit down
- 37:25with them and uh and and say, you know,
- 37:28and say, "Do y'all want to stay or you
- 37:30want to go go?" Because he's got his
- 37:32staff. He's going to evaluate him. He
- 37:33may not want he may not want to keep
- 37:35them, you know, and
- 37:37>> speaking might want to keep them. I
- 37:38won't call any names. This is a funny
- 37:39story though. We're at Florida
- 37:41>> and we had one player uh he was an
- 37:44offensive lineman
- 37:46>> and he never made the 105. And for those
- 37:48who don't know what the 105 is, that's
- 37:50who you bring to to practice.
- 37:51>> And you had at that point we had 85 on
- 37:53scholarship, but you bring you bring 105
- 37:55to to preseason practice.
- 37:57>> No. And no more one. That's what you're
- 37:58allowed to total. Yeah.
- 37:59>> That's what you're allowed to carry. And
- 38:01so we had one player who never made the
- 38:03105 in the whole three years we were
- 38:04there. And Wickline calls him in one day
- 38:07and he says, "Listen,"
- 38:09he said, "who did you have offers?" Cuz
- 38:11Spurer had signed him and uh and Wick
- 38:14calls him in. He says, "How many, let me
- 38:16ask you a question." He says, "I'm not,"
- 38:17and this is classic Wig. He says, "Um,
- 38:21you know, I'm not going to hold it
- 38:22against you." He said, "Look, if you had
- 38:23any pride, you would already quit." He
- 38:25said, "So, just tell me just tell me
- 38:27where just tell me where you got
- 38:29offers." And it
- 38:30>> makes me feel so good, doesn't it?
- 38:32>> Yeah. That was Joe, you He's like, you
- 38:34know, the kid said Florida and Watford
- 38:36and um you know, I mean that there's a
- 38:39reason he didn't make the 105, you know,
- 38:41and um you know, you'd like to, you
- 38:44know, we would have like for him to have
- 38:45left. We' had another scholarship, but
- 38:47we couldn't get him to go.
- 38:49>> Well, back then, back then, you could
- 38:51you could have only 105 in pre-practice.
- 38:53Just that's preseason. In August, you're
- 38:56allowed to bring in 105 guys from a
- 38:57budget standpoint. Uh once school
- 39:00starts, all the other guys could come
- 39:01back and it can go to
- 39:03then it just goes as much locker room
- 39:05space as you got. There was no numbers
- 39:07most of the time. So, but you you get
- 39:09over 120 guys, you you really got more
- 39:11than you even have space for, you know,
- 39:13and so you so at least with a way to
- 39:15give a a booster a favor or two, but
- 39:17they to make that 105, that's part of
- 39:19it. That that's no, you got to you can't
- 39:21be some limp little guy's not real good.
- 39:24you know, you got to have a little bit
- 39:25of juice to you uh to be in 105 most of
- 39:28the time or you got to be promised
- 39:30during we can't sign you, but we'll
- 39:32bring you in as one of the 105. You know
- 39:33how that goes. And so anyway, anyway,
- 39:35that's those are those are decisions
- 39:38that now being made. Your did your dog
- 39:39just get in.
- 39:40>> I've got three in
- 39:43>> I'm waiting for I'm waiting for mine to
- 39:45start barking here. But but let me go
- 39:47back before we get back to the uh uh
- 39:48let's put a bow on the uh Byron Brown.
- 39:52If you if the quarterbacks you've got
- 39:54right now, Ashton Daniel and Deuce uh um
- 39:58Knight are are better than he is, then
- 40:00they're big time because I believe and
- 40:03I've studied him and watched him because
- 40:05I've had to do that for my podcast. He
- 40:07is really good. He is a Now from NFL
- 40:10scouts would say he's still a little bit
- 40:12he's still a little bit of a risk taker.
- 40:14He still makes some mistakes every now
- 40:16and then. Uh, but I would think that'd
- 40:18be more like Brett Far makes mistakes
- 40:20every time. He's a he he's a he's he's
- 40:22he's so talented. He's one of the most
- 40:24prolific quarterbacks in the NCAA as far
- 40:28as he has more touchdowns than any other
- 40:29quarterback in the NCA FBS, runs and
- 40:31passes. He's rushed for a thousand,
- 40:34thrown for several thousand. Uh, and
- 40:35he's big and physical. And, uh, you'll
- 40:38see him. He he he's something else. Uh,
- 40:41and my my thoughts are uh, is that I bet
- 40:44you they're really looking hard at
- 40:45taking him. You know, that's what that
- 40:46would be thought. Now, if they don't,
- 40:48they've made the evaluation that what
- 40:49they have is better because I promise
- 40:51you that quarterback.
- 40:53>> Yeah.
- 40:54>> Jackson Arnold hitting hitting the
- 40:55portal and you've got Ashton Daniels who
- 40:57announced a couple of days he's hitting
- 40:58the portal. So,
- 40:59>> so Ashton's hitting the port and really
- 41:02so young that might be the perfect deal.
- 41:04And I think that would probably that and
- 41:06and and I didn't realize that Ashton
- 41:07Daniels had hit the portal. I forgot he
- 41:10wasn't on that list that I pulled up
- 41:11that. But anyway, you're right. If Ash
- 41:13Danles is gone or no, he's in the
- 41:16portal. You can decide whether to try to
- 41:18negotiate him back. Uh or
- 41:22what would I would have to think Byron
- 41:24Brown and and Duce Knight would be a
- 41:25nice pair. Uh and then a young
- 41:27quarterback uh that's younger. That
- 41:28would give you young, but uh well, you
- 41:31better have
- 41:32>> carry three or four on scholarship.
- 41:33>> Well, you back then we'd hope we had
- 41:35three, but you know, you had two that
- 41:36were ready to play and one that wasn't
- 41:37quite ready. And uh uh that's like my my
- 41:41that was like my last year that my last
- 41:43year in coaching. I had two ready and
- 41:44one that wasn't I lost my portal guy. I
- 41:46lost my starter that was a portal. I
- 41:48lost my backup at my my backup to the uh
- 41:52end up being my starter at two and0. He
- 41:54broke his collar blown. And my third
- 41:55wasn't quite as good. You know, as Jimbo
- 41:57would always say, he can't play dead in
- 41:59the Cowboy movie. That was his that was
- 42:01that was Jimbo's favorite saying about a
- 42:03player that that wasn't as talented. I
- 42:05can't he could can't play dead in the
- 42:06cowboy movie. Uh but anyway, Jimboisms
- 42:09that probably we we we probably
- 42:10shouldn't say on here.
- 42:12>> Yeah, I got a bunch of Jimbo stories uh
- 42:15from when he played for me at Salem
- 42:16College. Uh but anyway, I but Brown but
- 42:19that's that was interesting. It caught
- 42:21my attention right when it hit today and
- 42:23I said Auburn's probably going to have a
- 42:25chance to get a super super quarterback
- 42:27if it fits in, you know, cuz they it
- 42:29would it would be part of that process
- 42:31and it would that would mean when you
- 42:32walk the very first day you walk on the
- 42:34field preseason spring practice, he
- 42:37knows exactly what to do. He knows
- 42:39exactly how the thing goes, how
- 42:40everything goes. Uh and it goes perfect.
- 42:43And you got to remember u Kirk signed
- 42:46took about 20 guys from James Madison to
- 42:48Indiana. Now, there's no way I would
- 42:51have thought 20 guys that James Madison
- 42:52could have played at Indiana except that
- 42:54was a pretty low program when he took
- 42:56over talent-wise, you know, but they
- 42:58>> maybe some culture guys, you know.
- 43:00>> Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Yeah. Oh,
- 43:01no. That's what I Yeah, they had to be
- 43:02because there's not there's I don't care
- 43:04any SEC school, any any Sunb Belt school
- 43:07doesn't have 20 guys that can play for a
- 43:0910-1 Big 10 team, you know, that beat
- 43:11almost everybody like that. Uh but they
- 43:14were better than what they had and they
- 43:16were process guys because Jim remember
- 43:18Kurt Signedi uh early in his career
- 43:20spent about four years or five years
- 43:22with with with uh Nick Sabin at uh
- 43:25Alabama. And so um although he was a
- 43:28coach on his own, his dad was a coach,
- 43:29he knew what he was doing, he picked up
- 43:31a lot of that process, you know, uh that
- 43:34uh
- 43:34>> personality wise too, I think.
- 43:36>> Yeah, he I think Well, you know, I think
- 43:38he and Jimbo both kind of kind of
- 43:40watched. Although I'll say back, I kind
- 43:42of enjoy I I don't know, it's hard to
- 43:44say as an Auburn person, as an Auburn
- 43:46guy, but he he is uh I would thought he
- 43:48would never fit in with that uh ESPN
- 43:51game day stuff because they got so many
- 43:53so much quacky stuff going on there, you
- 43:55know, and he doesn't seem very quacky or
- 43:57very, you know, goofy. Uh but he he he
- 44:00handles it pretty well, you know, and
- 44:01>> he goes on Pat McAfee, who I I don't
- 44:04think I'd go on Pat McAfee, but he goes
- 44:05on there every week and, you know, they
- 44:06they kind of go back and forth. Yeah, he
- 44:08Yeah, he's he's he's kind he's kind of
- 44:11he's kind of taking it taking it in
- 44:13stride and and makes it's he's making it
- 44:16uh and he loves doing I would have I
- 44:17wouldn't have thought he'd even want to
- 44:19do all the things that he's doing, but
- 44:20he's doing it and he does a good job
- 44:22with most of it. Uh it gives him a
- 44:25>> Well, he well it gives that group so
- 44:27much if you're a football coach or
- 44:29you've been a part of a football
- 44:30program, so much of that that stuff is
- 44:33hogwash. They don't know what they're
- 44:34talking about. And when you get a coach
- 44:36that's done it before and he's you
- 44:38listen you listen to because he knows
- 44:40what he's talking about, you know, and
- 44:42he knows uh uh where it comes from and
- 44:44what you've got to do to be successful.
- 44:46And so anyway, um all right. So we got
- 44:48Brown, Byron Brown. It'll be that that
- 44:51story will be continued uh cuz he can't
- 44:54get he can't be going anywhere until I
- 44:56wonder how that's going to happen. These
- 44:58people rumors and people be talking and
- 45:01uh rumors is that this guy's going here
- 45:03and this guy's going there. uh they
- 45:05can't even really visit or do all that
- 45:06stuff before the 2nd of January, but uh
- 45:10they're all declaring and stuff. So
- 45:12that's
- 45:12>> I talked to to an an agent last night
- 45:15who represents a bunch of NIL guys and
- 45:17>> yeah,
- 45:18>> it's the wild wild west. He's like I'm
- 45:20still getting my I'm still getting my
- 45:22feet under me and it's been what three
- 45:23years now.
- 45:24>> Yeah,
- 45:25>> it's a but you know talking about you
- 45:27know before we go it's and we got a
- 45:29little bit of time but playoff um
- 45:31>> yes, we want to get to that before we
- 45:33finish up here. We had a good first
- 45:34round in playoffs.
- 45:37>> Yeah, I'm really looking forward to uh
- 45:39Well, I mean, you've got a lot of great
- 45:40games coming up. I mean, we talked about
- 45:42we talked about um Oregon and James
- 45:45Madison and two lane Old Miss, but I
- 45:46mean I I really thought Oklahoma would
- 45:48uh would beat Alabama. Alabama still
- 45:50can't run the ball, but they figured out
- 45:51a way to win.
- 45:52>> You know, let's go let's hit the games
- 45:54real quick because I I lost that one. I
- 45:56It was a one and a half point spot, I
- 45:58believe it was. Was it uh one and a
- 46:00half? It was one and a half. Oklahoma
- 46:02favored one and a half and I picked
- 46:04Oklahoma. Um, and you know what? Then
- 46:07they were up 17 to nothing and I think
- 46:09they're I still believe they're about a
- 46:11one and a half point better team, but
- 46:13nobody imploded worse than Oklahoma.
- 46:15I've never seen a team implode worse
- 46:17than Oklahoma. They're up 17 to nothing.
- 46:20John Matier can't miss. He's they're 15
- 46:22runs, 15 passes, 188 yards to three, you
- 46:26know, halfway through the second
- 46:27quarter. Then all of a sudden, Alabama
- 46:29makes a play. It scored. They all a
- 46:31sudden they No, no, no. All of a sudden
- 46:34Oklahoma makes a mistake. They muff a
- 46:36punt snap. They muff it. No, no, no.
- 46:38That was the second thing, right? No.
- 46:40The first one was Alabama got a drive
- 46:42going down and they had a fourth and two
- 46:43on a 10 yardd line or 12 and they make a
- 46:46touchdown. Remember they had a fourth
- 46:47and two. They're down 17 to nothing and
- 46:50they and fourth and two and I watched
- 46:52that play because that was one, you
- 46:53know, the old, you know, goal line short
- 46:55yard. What the five must to win. you
- 46:56have these five months or six months
- 46:58they one of those goal line short
- 47:00yardage but anyway then Oklahoma scores
- 47:03you know at least and I'm thinking okay
- 47:05at least tell Oklahoma can is still in
- 47:07the game I mean I mean Alabama's still
- 47:09in the game they were down 17 to nothing
- 47:11if Oklahoma scores the next points it's
- 47:13probably over but if Alabama could score
- 47:15they can at least go into the dressing
- 47:17room with some confidence and so they
- 47:19scored but it didn't look like
- 47:20necessarily the game was any different
- 47:22it was still going to be an Oklahoma
- 47:24game Oklahoma was playing so and their
- 47:26defense is only well, their defense has
- 47:28only given up 13.8 points a game and so
- 47:31you know that they're still in good
- 47:32shape. Well, what happens the next time
- 47:34before the half's over? Um, they get a
- 47:37they have a punt and the punter drops
- 47:40the ball. It's a low it's a little bit
- 47:41low, but it's easy easy to hand and he
- 47:43drops it and it gets blocked and they
- 47:46score again, you know. Uh, and that's
- 47:48the one that that they kick. They get
- 47:50three points out of that. They get three
- 47:52points out of that one.
- 47:53>> And give D'Vour credit, you I mean, the
- 47:54the fourth down call at Auburn, I'm not
- 47:56sure it was the best call, but it won
- 47:57the game, you know, and and um and then
- 47:59the fourth down call against Oklahoma. I
- 48:01mean, for a team that can't run the
- 48:02ball, I mean, they've won 11 games and
- 48:04and made it to the second round of play.
- 48:05>> Well, but but to go with that, there's a
- 48:07kicking game error right there. A a
- 48:10kicking game breakdown. You know, you
- 48:12know, my five six months to win, no
- 48:14breakdowns in the kicking game. There's
- 48:16there's a they muffed a punt snap that
- 48:18cost them three points after giving up a
- 48:20touchdown. And then the next time they
- 48:22come back, they throw us what a pick six
- 48:25that went 50 yards for a touchdown. And
- 48:27that was just a terrible, terrible
- 48:28decision. And I don't know if you if you
- 48:31saw it, but most people who know
- 48:32football, they were throwing a speed out
- 48:34to the boundary, you know, a speed out,
- 48:36just a three kind of a four-step speed
- 48:38out. And and the and if the quarterback
- 48:41comes up, you you turn it into a fade.
- 48:43And so the the quarterback the
- 48:45quarterback fake man coverage. He jumps
- 48:47up and too deep real at the last minute.
- 48:49a receiver runs a vertical fade and the
- 48:52quarterback didn't see it and threw the
- 48:54dagum out right to the defender and
- 48:56right to him and all and they they
- 48:58didn't even blunt it that well. But
- 49:00that's a terrible mistake. That wasn't
- 49:02just like a a great play by the defense.
- 49:04They they were what they were doing they
- 49:06were they were disguising zero coverage.
- 49:08Here it is 17 to 10 now and and Oklahoma
- 49:11feels I mean and Oklahoma feel like they
- 49:13might score again and maybe get get back
- 49:14into control. And so they they they uh
- 49:17line up and they have they have a fade a
- 49:19speed out on and um um because
- 49:22Oklahoma's doing a lot played a lot of
- 49:24zero and so they show zero coverage and
- 49:28the uh right before the ball is snapped
- 49:31the safety that was kind of over the
- 49:32left tackle he runs back out to the deep
- 49:34he runs back out all the way back to the
- 49:36deep half. Well and so that's right away
- 49:39the quarterback should know this isn't
- 49:40this is zero coverage. So, but of course
- 49:42as the ball now once the ball gets
- 49:44snapped that quarterback starts cheating
- 49:46up because now he's a hard corner you
- 49:48know and that the receiver you know what
- 49:50you should be throwing aole shot the old
- 49:53too deep hole shot throw the ball in
- 49:55between the corner and the and the
- 49:57quarterback just made a and you know and
- 49:59I guess it was the quarterback's fault
- 50:01but I got an old saying you get what you
- 50:03demand somewhere along the line that
- 50:04quarterback didn't know what he was
- 50:05doing he he did not know to to that the
- 50:08safety was running backwards something
- 50:10that happened before the snap so anyway
- 50:11way. That being said, they imploded.
- 50:14They have a they they muff a punt snap
- 50:16uh and uh and lose three points from
- 50:19that. They uh they throw a a dumb pick.
- 50:22It it was a dumb pick. It wasn't a great
- 50:24play by the defense. It was a dumb pick.
- 50:27It wasn't even well disguised. It was
- 50:29once if you go look at it, if you go
- 50:30look at the highlights of that play, it
- 50:32wasn't even well disguised. A good
- 50:34disguise. The quarterback nobody moves
- 50:36until the ball snapped. And that that
- 50:38safety started running backwards about a
- 50:39couple seconds before the ball got
- 50:41snapped. so the quarterback could see
- 50:42it. Uh just and then you knew it was
- 50:44zone. Um and then and then you got the
- 50:47the uh the Lou Groza uh uh national
- 50:50kicker of the year. He misses a 36 yard
- 50:53field goal and then he misses a 50. Then
- 50:55he missed a 51, which sounds like a long
- 50:57one, but he was only eight of eight out
- 50:59of 50 plus yards. The number one guy in
- 51:01the country, number one kicker in the
- 51:02country. He missed two field goals.
- 51:04Well, that those points right there are
- 51:06and then they they gave up the don't
- 51:08give up the deep ball. They gave up a 37
- 51:10yard touchdown pass, you know. So,
- 51:12here's a team that's just dominating the
- 51:14game and they had they had about five
- 51:16Cardinal sins. And so, bottom line is
- 51:20when they got 17 points ahead,
- 51:23Alabama didn't lose their composure.
- 51:25Alabama didn't implode. Alabama uh
- 51:28handled the adversity. When Alabama
- 51:30caught up, Oklahoma did implode. They
- 51:32did everything wrong and and and they
- 51:35never could get it back. And so
- 51:37>> I do remember one game that may have
- 51:38been worse than Oklahoma. You remember
- 51:40the interception game?
- 51:42>> The what's that? Oh, you know the LSU
- 51:45Auburn game.
- 51:46>> Yeah, that Yeah. We we we we we beat
- 51:49them like 31 to 28 or 29 28 or 3129 and
- 51:53we score no touchdowns on offense. We
- 51:55have a field goal and four defensive
- 51:57touchdowns on three interceptions for
- 51:59touchdowns and a fumble that went to the
- 52:00end zone for a touchdown. Unbelievable.
- 52:02But anyway, that was But anyway, that's
- 52:04Alabama moves up uh and they got to play
- 52:06Indiana and and Indiana's right now a
- 52:09six and a half point favorite uh on that
- 52:11one. U and that's they still can't run.
- 52:15>> No, still can't run. And
- 52:16>> and Oklahoma had better stats on almost
- 52:18every category. Oklahoma out stat almost
- 52:21every stat 25 more plays everything
- 52:23except Oklahoma imploded you know and uh
- 52:26and and uh they and let's say this
- 52:29venables will have to live with that the
- 52:30entire off and that will be a miserable
- 52:32>> because he went from that he that he
- 52:34went from a a great coach to you you
- 52:37blew it and and not that he not that not
- 52:40that he can't handle that he's not going
- 52:41to get fired I'm it's going to be a
- 52:43miserable off season for the coaching
- 52:44staff at at Oklahoma&M
- 52:47too I mean they they go out and have a
- 52:49great year. Win win 11 games, lose to
- 52:52your arch rival and then lose in the
- 52:54first round of the playoffs.
- 52:55>> Lose two game.
- 52:56>> Yeah. No, no, it'll it'll go there. All
- 52:58of a sudden, they're going back look in
- 52:59the mirror and said, "Same old A&M. We
- 53:01got our hopes up again. We got our hopes
- 53:03up again." And then last two games we
- 53:05got beat by good people. And uh and and
- 53:08you know, basically their their
- 53:09quarterback didn't handle this quite as
- 53:10well. They their quarterback has to get
- 53:12to where he doesn't make as many
- 53:13mistakes. When they lost, the
- 53:14quarterback made some bad decisions. But
- 53:17I but I'll say this for Miami uh because
- 53:20it it it was a great def that that Miami
- 53:22defense played like they used to play
- 53:24back when Jimmy Johnson was there. They
- 53:25had those great they played tough tough
- 53:27football. U u but that was one of those
- 53:30games nobody could score uh in that
- 53:32game. Of course ne neither field goal
- 53:34could make any field goals. That was the
- 53:36one where the win was so bad. I think
- 53:38the the Miami kicker missed three field
- 53:40goals. Chip shots I think and or or
- 53:42missed two and made one you know. Uh but
- 53:45regardless, Texas A&M they they lost
- 53:48their last two games. Uh and it really
- 53:51really
- 53:51>> rival it's you know what what was
- 53:53looking like a great year and and and
- 53:55you you lose the last game. You miss you
- 53:56miss your chance to play in the in the
- 53:58SEC championship game for the first
- 53:59time.
- 54:00>> Yeah.
- 54:00>> You lose your arch rival. You you lose
- 54:03your opportunity at the SEC championship
- 54:04game. You make the playoff and then you
- 54:05lose at home.
- 54:06>> I mean for for a for a program that was
- 54:09really I mean you know had a had a
- 54:11really great year. Uh now you got a sour
- 54:13taste in your mouth for for the whole
- 54:15>> and you know you made a good point
- 54:16there. Both last year all four home
- 54:19teams won and that was a big factor in
- 54:22me picking uh Oklahoma by one and a half
- 54:24and Texas&M by three and a half. You're
- 54:26playing at home. Your defenses are
- 54:29really good, you know, and that should
- 54:31be enough. You know, we're not talking
- 54:32about blowing somebody out. We're
- 54:34talking about winning by four points for
- 54:36for Texas A&M. And as you watch that
- 54:39game, they just they could not uh their
- 54:41quarterback uh Marcel Reed towards the
- 54:44end, he had two turnovers. He had two
- 54:46interceptions and a fumble. And I think
- 54:48against Texas, he had to hit turnovers
- 54:50at the end as well. And so now he's a
- 54:52good he's a talented kid, but he's going
- 54:54they're going to have to correct that if
- 54:56they're going to move anywhere in the
- 54:56postseason. So that that like like
- 54:59Oklahoma, that's a miserable offseason
- 55:01when you lose your last two games. when
- 55:03you lose to Texas and then you lose to
- 55:06uh uh Miami in the uh first round of the
- 55:08playoffs and at one point you were
- 55:10undefeated a few weeks earlier. You
- 55:13know,
- 55:14>> they're going to conference Texas has
- 55:17been in the conference for two years and
- 55:19you know you pick back up to Lonear
- 55:20rivalry and you've lost I believe they
- 55:21lost last year. So you've you first time
- 55:23you played in over a decade and you've
- 55:25lost twice to your to your rival and and
- 55:28the best season in what since 92 I
- 55:31guess. Um, and you don't really win
- 55:34anything.
- 55:35>> Well, just so just so so I guess that
- 55:38would bring the point with Venibals.
- 55:40He's now on the heating up seat. Not the
- 55:43hot seat. It's heating up again. You
- 55:44know, now uh Dbor is off the hot seat
- 55:46for a few weeks, but you're never off
- 55:49the hot seat totally cuz if he gets beat
- 55:51this week, it's back on it. And uh you
- 55:54know, we had Tommy on the show last week
- 55:55where Tommy said I said, "How tough is
- 55:57it?" Well, he said, "Well, we we played
- 55:59we won 10 games, played in the SC
- 56:01championship. We lost in SEC
- 56:03Championship and uh I'm thinking we had
- 56:06a pretty good year 10-2, you know, back
- 56:07then." And look in the paper and they
- 56:09had five guys they were announced that
- 56:11were looking at the job and the next day
- 56:13Curry took off and went to Kentucky, you
- 56:14know.
- 56:15>> Yeah. I mean, that was that was the year
- 56:18that uh you know, 92 was the
- 56:20championship game. That that was ' 89,
- 56:22you know, and so Alabama actually shared
- 56:24the championship with with Auburn and I
- 56:26think Tennessee, too. I think it was a
- 56:27three-way tie and you you share the
- 56:29conference championship and finish 10
- 56:31and one. You're ranked, you know, the
- 56:32top five, go ranked number two coming in
- 56:34and you get you get run off, go to
- 56:36Kentucky.
- 56:38>> Well, but what it is, they make they
- 56:39they they make it so uncomfortable for
- 56:41you and your family. They make it you
- 56:43you you leave then they can say, "Look,
- 56:44you walked away." You know, we know how
- 56:47that goes. That's one of those deals.
- 56:48They make it so
- 56:48>> uncomfortable. Johnny lasted two years.
- 56:50You know, Mike Price and that's what
- 56:51that's a little bit what you get. You
- 56:52bring in guys from the West Coast. You
- 56:54know, Harson lasted a year and a half at
- 56:56Auburn.
- 56:56>> They don't know what they're get. They
- 56:57don't know what they're getting into.
- 56:58>> Mike Price ends up in a strip club and
- 57:00last what five, four, five months, you
- 57:02know, and and I mean, you just it's it's
- 57:05a different world. I mean, you know,
- 57:07it's if you're on the West Coast and
- 57:08there's a reason, you know, Chip Kelly
- 57:09took UCLA over Florida. People say, "Was
- 57:11he crazy?" Well, no. He just didn't want
- 57:13people walking up to him getting out
- 57:14getting autographs the whole time he's
- 57:16sitting at dinner, you know, and and you
- 57:18go, you live in LA, nobody I mean,
- 57:20nobody cares who you I mean, it's not if
- 57:21you're coaching at UCLA.
- 57:24>> Well, that and I guess the bottom line I
- 57:25was saying is Dbor if he gets if he gets
- 57:27pounded by Indiana. Don't don't Michigan
- 57:30may jump back. I mean, may jump back in
- 57:32the picture on that situation. But not
- 57:34that they're going to fire him. He's got
- 57:35you. I don't think that's the situation.
- 57:37But like I say, he he he goes home and
- 57:39the family talks about it and they're so
- 57:40miserable. So, let's go somewhere else.
- 57:42But I don't know how that goes. Anyway,
- 57:43uh but anyway, it was a game I thought
- 57:45Texas&M was a little bit better team.
- 57:47Uh, and I think if they don't turn the
- 57:48ball over, that was one of those
- 57:50somebody's going to somebody's going to
- 57:51win it close until they'll until Miami
- 57:54because Miami couldn't score holly at
- 57:55all either. They they were but there was
- 57:56a great defense and uh uh and that that
- 58:00that game. Old Miss, we we talked about
- 58:02Old Miss was just and Oregon both. It
- 58:04was just the talent level was too good
- 58:06was going to make too much of a
- 58:07difference. That was my big thinking on
- 58:10those two games. Uh they got the second
- 58:12team allconerence quarterback sitting
- 58:14out there playing lights out. They've
- 58:15got the first team running back running
- 58:17lights out. Tain doesn't have those kind
- 58:19of athletes and I thought score and it
- 58:22showed. It showed.
- 58:23>> It did. And you got some I'm really
- 58:24looking forward to, you know, it'll be
- 58:26the I guess everybody's off this week,
- 58:28but you got Oregon, Texas Tech,
- 58:31Indiana, Old Miss, and Georgia, which
- 58:33was a great game. Uh, and then you got
- 58:35Miami, Ohio State. I mean, some some
- 58:37really really good games.
- 58:39>> Yeah, you've got the Miami Ohio State,
- 58:41you got nine and a half points right
- 58:42now. the the spots nine and a half for a
- 58:45high state favorite uh in that which is
- 58:47about right. Miami is going to have a
- 58:48hard time scoring on that defense.
- 58:50Number one defense in the country at
- 58:51Ohio State. Uh Texas Tech Oregon will be
- 58:53awesome. You're talking about some they
- 58:55got some NFL talent. It's a now that
- 58:57Oregon's a one and a half point favorite
- 58:59over Texas Tech, but that's a that's a
- 59:01toss up in my mind. And uh um and
- 59:03Alabama Indiana and Indiana's just under
- 59:06seven points right now favorite uh on
- 59:08that one. and which is a pretty good
- 59:10spread for the second round of the
- 59:12playoffs. But uh uh I just think
- 59:14Alabama, and I said this going into the
- 59:16Oklahoma game that they don't run the
- 59:18ball, they can't win the playoffs. And
- 59:20they they won, but that was only because
- 59:22Oklahoma just totally imploded. I mean,
- 59:24I think Alabama had 58 total yards in
- 59:26that game. Did still didn't throw the
- 59:28ball run the ball very well. Uh and then
- 59:30um um Old Miss um Old Miss, no, not Oh,
- 59:34then Miss Georgia, which will be
- 59:36interesting. Georgia beat him, but it
- 59:37was a close game. It was a close game.
- 59:39Georgia had to come back to win the game
- 59:41and it was and oh miss is they play you
- 59:43they've got that monkey off their back
- 59:44now. Can they play well without lane
- 59:46kippen? Can they run an offense without
- 59:49lane kippen? Clearly they can.
- 59:51>> And I didn't watch them enough this year
- 59:53to to you know I have to go back and
- 59:54watch film. But my guess is that Pete
- 59:56Golding uh and and Charlie Weiss Jr. uh
- 1:00:00without Kein being Keifin being around,
- 1:00:02I'm sure there were some changes
- 1:00:03offensively and defensively uh that they
- 1:00:06hadn't shown for the the rest of the
- 1:00:08year.
- 1:00:08>> Yeah, a little different little little a
- 1:00:10little wrinkle here, wrinkle there, you
- 1:00:11know. Uh but now they didn't really have
- 1:00:13to show it that much against Tain. I
- 1:00:15really don't know that you had to do
- 1:00:16that much against Tain uh from a
- 1:00:18standpoint of putting new things in, but
- 1:00:21when you got a week off, you got you got
- 1:00:23a chance to do that kind of stuff. Um
- 1:00:25which they did. Uh, but I guarantee you
- 1:00:27if they've got some wrinkles, they'll
- 1:00:28have it for Georgia. Uh, so that all
- 1:00:31those are good. That's that's a seven
- 1:00:33and a half. That's a lot. That's the
- 1:00:34largest. I mean, the Ohio State game,
- 1:00:35they're nine and a half over Miami. And
- 1:00:38Georgia's seven and a half over Miss.
- 1:00:41But those are those are going to be four
- 1:00:42really good games. We got a week off,
- 1:00:44got some bowls coming up, we got a week
- 1:00:45off, but those will be really good. Uh,
- 1:00:48and it should give us a good week of
- 1:00:49games on uh to play. But overall,
- 1:00:52overall pretty good uh pretty good
- 1:00:54football. Uh I knew we would have two
- 1:00:56blowouts or two games that we probably
- 1:00:58weren't going to be real good, but we'll
- 1:00:59we'll that's that's part of it. Uh and
- 1:01:02then we'll go from there. So anyway, um
- 1:01:05>> well before
- 1:01:06>> other than that, I think the Byron Brown
- 1:01:09the big story there. Uh and it's a it
- 1:01:11really is a huge story because when you
- 1:01:14when you want to make a big change or
- 1:01:15big turnaround, that quarterback's very
- 1:01:17important now because I know I had Stan
- 1:01:19White as a senior and we he came back
- 1:01:21and played well. Dan White did and Pat
- 1:01:23Nicks been really Pat was the backup the
- 1:01:26whole year except for the last half
- 1:01:27against Alabama. Uh but this will be a
- 1:01:30big this will be a big uh this will be a
- 1:01:33big part of the future of Auburn I think
- 1:01:36uh what this what how this goes with
- 1:01:38Byron Brown and uh I wouldn't be shocked
- 1:01:41that it ends up with Byron and Duce
- 1:01:43Knight. I wouldn't be ship shook. It
- 1:01:45wouldn't shock me at all if it was Byron
- 1:01:47Brown and Deuce Knight. And uh and I and
- 1:01:50be honest with you, if it was Ashton
- 1:01:51Daniels and and Bruce Knight, I think
- 1:01:53you got you got a pretty good future
- 1:01:55there. But I I just got to believe that
- 1:01:57that coach, he he going to ride that
- 1:01:59horse as long as he can ride him. And
- 1:02:00he's got him a horse uh that he's going
- 1:02:02to have. Uh and because whoever takes
- 1:02:05Byron Brown is going to have to promise
- 1:02:06him to start. I guarantee there's no way
- 1:02:08you can bring a guy in with one year of
- 1:02:09eligibility with his stats who just
- 1:02:12played for you, you know, and not say
- 1:02:14you're our guy, you know, and probably
- 1:02:16have to tell the guys that that's here
- 1:02:17the same thing. Um, so should be
- 1:02:19interesting. Should be interesting.
- 1:02:21We'll have a um we'll be able we'll
- 1:02:23probably we'll have a show next week
- 1:02:25before the championship game. So, we'll
- 1:02:26be somewhere between Christmas and New
- 1:02:28Year's next week that we'll get on and
- 1:02:30uh and there'll be some bowl games. Oh,
- 1:02:33there's my phone ringing. How about
- 1:02:34that? Scared me a little bit. All right,
- 1:02:37we can talk a little bit about our
- 1:02:39sponsor.
- 1:02:39>> Yes, always Tom Haley uh from Haley
- 1:02:42Family Foundation. We thank Tom uh and
- 1:02:45the foundation for for sponsoring our
- 1:02:47show. Um can't say enough about Tom
- 1:02:49every time I come in. My mother's living
- 1:02:51right now in in Auburn when I get there
- 1:02:53to see her. I get to see Tom all the
- 1:02:55time. And uh uh appreciate him what he
- 1:02:57does for Auburn, what he does for Auburn
- 1:02:59athletics uh and what he has done to
- 1:03:01make this show possible each week. And
- 1:03:03uh uh let us know, let Ron know or let
- 1:03:05us know on the on the board whether you
- 1:03:06what if y'all want us to talk about
- 1:03:08something else and uh uh we'll be glad
- 1:03:10to talk about it and uh uh maybe open up
- 1:03:12some opening up some callers maybe.
- 1:03:15>> Yeah, we can do that next week.
- 1:03:16>> That sounds good.
- 1:03:18>> Thanks to everybody for listening and
- 1:03:19we'll see you next week.
