- 0:05All right, welcome guys. We are here, most of us are, and
- 0:09another one probably coming still, but anyway, if not, we'll
- 0:12proceed. Thanks for being here.
- 0:14Appreciate it. We're going to look into the
- 0:16Word of God tonight and let it determine how we live and what
- 0:20we think about ourselves and Him actually.
- 0:24So for the next hour we're going to discuss out of Hebrews
- 0:28chapter 10 and we are going to see what that that has to what
- 0:32is there for us tonight. As always, you can raise your
- 0:38hand or type in the chat or whatever you want to do to get
- 0:42our attention. We'd love to have input or or
- 0:45questions comments if you'd like.

- 1:03you can find also anywhere you stream your podcast.
- 1:05From tonight's study, we are going to start in verse 37 of
- 1:14Hebrews 10. We did not quite get that
- 1:16chapter finished, but there's some really good content here.
- 1:19These last few verses as I was studying for tonight.
- 1:21Looking forward to it. So.
- 1:23But before we get started, what would you open us up with?
- 1:26A word of prayer. Sure, let's pray.
- 1:28Father, we praise you tonight and we thank you for this time
- 1:32that we can spend looking into your word.
- 1:35And Father, I just pray that you anoint us again with tonight
- 1:39with your Spirit on, that your word would penetrate and people
- 1:45could have clarity of your word, be more clear about your Word,
- 1:51and that you could work in people's lives through your word
- 1:56and through this Bible study. And so, Father, we just ask you
- 1:59who guide us and direct us tonight, and we thank you for
- 2:04most of all for your Son Jesus to die for us on the cross and
- 2:09to redeem us from sin, and that we can be righteous in your eyes
- 2:16only through the blood of Jesus. And we thank you, and we honor
- 2:20you, and we bless you in Jesus name, Amen.
- 2:24Amen. All right, OK, yeah.
- 2:29Verse 37 says that it breaks right into the middle here, but
- 2:35it says for yet a little while. And he that shall come, will
- 2:39come and will not tarry. And this comes on the heels of
- 2:44having spoken in verse 32 and on between there 37 now, how he is
- 2:51asking them to remember, you know, how they grabbed a hold of
- 2:56the gospel and what pain that caused them or whatever.
- 3:00They had a great fight of afflictions, he says there and
- 3:04he's encouraging them to stay with it, to stick with it.
- 3:08And he's just, he just kind of pushing them to, you know, it's
- 3:12not the beginning, not the guy that starts the race that wins,
- 3:14but the guy that actually finishes it, that kind of thing.
- 3:17So that is a context here when he says this.
- 3:20And just as a side note, I think this kind of having gone through
- 3:25Hebrews 10 thus far, just today, I was thinking about how that
- 3:30God is never surprised by our needs.
- 3:35You know, when he when he designed us, when he made us,
- 3:37when he did this, this universe, there are creatures on it, the
- 3:42the human beings that he breathed his breath of life into
- 3:46making them different than the animals and stuff, the Holy
- 3:48Spirit, the breath of life, the how that our needs that we had.
- 3:55In other words, we came up short in the way of, you know,
- 3:58righteousness. We came up short in a lot of
- 4:00different ways that did not catch him by surprise.
- 4:02He actually knew that was going to happen already and he already
- 4:06had a remedy for that in mind that was already set up.
- 4:10And I just, I just had to think about how stabilizing that is to
- 4:14my life to know that God isn't surprised.
- 4:18He he never was surprised by our Idiocracy.
- 4:23He he knew already what we needed before he started.
- 4:27So there's no emergency going on here.
- 4:31He's very capable, completely sure of his plan and his his
- 4:35method. And I just had to think of that
- 4:37thinking about the the thoroughness is that a word of
- 4:43Hebrews, the book Hebrews, how thorough it is in describing and
- 4:48maintaining that Jesus Christ is the way because it because it is
- 4:52the way that God set up for us to come to him.
- 4:56And so this is just more and we'll see more of it in the
- 4:59remaining books or writing chapters of Hebrews about this
- 5:05exact same thing. He's he's still going to keep
- 5:07going back to the same thing. So anyway, Aaron, that was kind
- 5:10of a log, but I just, I had to think about that.
- 5:12I thought that was that. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:17I'll just, I guess I would kind of reference you back to the
- 5:23things that he said they were going through, how they've been
- 5:26made a the gazing stock and they became companions of people that
- 5:33have been used that way. And then he turns around and
- 5:36says in the last part of verse 36 that you have needed
- 5:41patience, that after you've done the will of God, you might
- 5:44receive the promise for yet a little while.
- 5:47And he that shall come will come and will not tarry.
- 5:50So I think he's just trying to encourage them of the return of
- 5:56Christ. And it's like you could look at
- 5:59it a couple ways. There is in the Book of
- 6:02Revelation, there are those people, those Saints that are
- 6:07crying out, why don't you avenge our blood?
- 6:12Remember that like in Revelation, there's those Saints
- 6:14crying out, why don't you revenge our blood?
- 6:16And that is going to, you know, that's going to be a part of
- 6:20something that Christ is going to accomplish eventually.
- 6:24And then also, I guess the you could save the promise there at
- 6:28the end of verse 36 might refer to their, you know, the promise
- 6:32of a new body or that of rest that's coming that we talked
- 6:35about in earlier chapters. And I think all those things
- 6:38will be relevant to a people that are suffering for the
- 6:42gospel sake, right? In other words, I think all
- 6:44those things that Christ would accomplish, whether it be
- 6:47bringing the judgment or bringing the new body or
- 6:50bringing the new Jerusalem or whatever it might be, I think
- 6:54he's just trying to say keep, keep going forward, keep
- 6:59believing because he that has promised he's going to come,
- 7:03will come. And it may seem like a long time
- 7:05to you, but it's actually not going to be that long.
- 7:08Like it's a it is something that will happen eventually.
- 7:11And that's that's kind of what I thought about verse 37.
- 7:15Yeah, yeah, that one. Yeah, so there's a saying where
- 7:21people say that there's only two things in life that are
- 7:25definite, and that is taxes and death.
- 7:28But in fact, there's three things.
- 7:31And that is, is that Jesus is going to come back someday,
- 7:35right. And so that's what it's saying
- 7:38here. He's he's reminding them just
- 7:40like you said Aaron, he reminded them in verse 36 that that they
- 7:46need patience because they that they might receive the promise
- 7:53and then he's saying for yelling in a while and he that shall
- 7:57come will come and will not tarry.
- 7:59So part of that promise. I don't know exactly maybe can't
- 8:03think of exactly my mind what that promise.
- 8:06My me doesn't really say exactly what that promise is, but it
- 8:09involves Christ. Obviously it involves Jesus and
- 8:14so there's a verse I seen in James actually that says this
- 8:21says in James 5789. It says be patient.
- 8:26Therefore, brother unto the coming of the Lord.
- 8:29Behold, the husband waited for the precious fruit of the earth,
- 8:33and have long patience for it until he received the early and
- 8:36latter rain. Be also patient and establish
- 8:40your heart for the coming of the Lord.
- 8:42Draw nigh, grudge not one against another, brethren,
- 8:45unless you be condemned. Behold, the judge standeth
- 8:47before the door. So obviously God is waiting,
- 8:54patiently waiting for the coming of the Lord, for Jesus to come
- 8:59back, to tell him to come back, so that the fruit, like fruit
- 9:05can be fully developed. He says there until you receive
- 9:11the early and latter rain. It says that God is waiting for
- 9:14the fruit to come forth out of the earth like the what I see
- 9:19and that is believers, you know, people coming to Christ and
- 9:23believing in Christ by faith. And then he says, because of
- 9:27that, be ye also patient and establish your hearts for the
- 9:31drawing of the coming of the Lord draw of nine.
- 9:34And so I'm just going to say this is that obviously when
- 9:40Jesus comes back, if he comes back before you die is if you
- 9:45haven't given your life to Christ and haven't believed in
- 9:49the salvation of Jesus Christ through the blood of Christ and
- 9:53only that, then it's going to be too late, right?
- 9:56If if Christ comes back or if you die before you do that, it's
- 10:00going to be too late. And so he's just reminding them
- 10:03hear that Jesus is coming back and hold fast.
- 10:08You know, that's what he was saying before.
- 10:10He said earlier in the earlier verses He's telling them to hold
- 10:15fast and to to not go back to the law but keep their eyes on
- 10:21Christ and Christ only. Amen.
- 10:27Yeah, I just, I think the definition of the word patience
- 10:31is something that this book really, really highlights.
- 10:36Sometimes we think of the word patience in that, you know, like
- 10:39if you're you're a child and you you want the ice cream and your
- 10:43dad is saying just hang on, just wait a little bit.
- 10:45Just wait a little bit and and you know, hey, you're not being
- 10:47patient. You know, that's that's the way
- 10:49we typically use the word patience, right.
- 10:52But the word the the whole of life and all of Christianity,
- 10:56all of the life of Christianity is a waiting game and it is
- 10:59patient Patience is faith drawn out over time.
- 11:03It's continuing to abide, continuing to trust, continuing
- 11:07to hold fast. And he started that way in verse
- 11:1035. Cast not away.
- 11:11Therefore your confidence. You have need of patience that
- 11:15after you've done the will of God the the whole idea of
- 11:18Chapter 11 is going to speak much more to this concept of
- 11:21faith and patience. But the minor sufferings that we
- 11:23go through the difficulties that the Jews were facing just before
- 11:2770 AD we're we're about to get pretty extreme in in Jerusalem
- 11:32in particular, especially the Jewish people who didn't leave
- 11:35the city they had the Christians have need of patience to just
- 11:39hang on Christ is going to return.
- 11:41You don't need to panic. You don't need to stress out.
- 11:44Like Melvin said, death and taxes are a sure thing.
- 11:47Actually, the coming of Christ is more sure than death because
- 11:50some of us will not see death right.
- 11:53And so he's, he's saying for yet a little while and he that shall
- 11:57come will come. In Romans chapter 8, he says
- 12:00that the the glory that will be revealed is not worthy or the
- 12:04the, the suffering that we have now is not worthy to be compared
- 12:08with the glory that shall be revealed in US.
- 12:10He's been building on this theme constantly.
- 12:12Hebrews 928 he said so Christ was once offered to bear the
- 12:16sins of many and unto them that look for him shall he appear the
- 12:19second time without sin unto salvation.
- 12:22So that he's he's trying to continue to hold out that hope.
- 12:25So faith, hope and patience, they're all so intertwined and
- 12:28connected. We are saved by faith.
- 12:30But Romans chapter 8 also says we are saved by hope.
- 12:33And so faith, hope and patience are all some element of faith.
- 12:38We believe Christ is returning and now we're being tried and
- 12:42tested and it feels like he's not coming.
- 12:44Well, that's faith stretched out over a period of time.
- 12:47That's patience. Our hope is laid up for us in
- 12:49heaven. We are confirmed by that.
- 12:52We are absolutely convinced of the thing that's waiting, that
- 12:56we're waiting for, right? And so we latch onto it by
- 12:59faith. We continue to hold onto it with
- 13:01patience, and our hope is reserved for us and it cannot be
- 13:04corrupted. So the final coming of the Lord
- 13:06will happen according to Romans 10/11/12, that whole section,
- 13:10It's when the fullness of the Gentiles has come in, then we
- 13:13know that Christ will come down and gather his Saints to
- 13:16himself. So many of these people had
- 13:19lived through some pretty unbearable times, and people in
- 13:22our days lived through some pretty unbearable times.
- 13:25But I would, he's trying to say, basically, take heart.
- 13:28Even if you have, even if the rest of your life is a life of
- 13:30suffering, the next 40 years, it'll still be worth waiting.
- 13:34It'll still be worth tearing. Just be patient, get a little
- 13:38while. And yes, 40 years is just a blip
- 13:41on the radar. It's just a little while.
- 13:43There is no other hope than Christ.
- 13:44Do not turn back. Don't don't think that there's
- 13:48some other options, right? So just wait a little longer.
- 13:51And I, it seems like that's kind of what the whole book is about,
- 13:53right? Don't turn back, continue to
- 13:55wait. Hold on to this thing.
- 13:57Don't, don't draw back, right? So patience is kind of the key
- 14:01here. And that's, that's like, if you
- 14:05think about the, oh, I don't know, for me, maybe the two
- 14:08weeks before I turned 17 took forever.
- 14:13Two weeks before my wedding date, it was the longest two
- 14:16weeks in the face of the Earth, you know, And so to say to to
- 14:21have patience, it is a it is hard that that, you know, for
- 14:27some of these people whose pain is very intense, a minute seems
- 14:32like a very, very long time, you know, So, but he's asking us to
- 14:35just hang in there. I wanted to talk a little bit
- 14:38about the word Terry. You know, it says he won't,
- 14:41Terry. But yet here we are 2000 years
- 14:43later, still waiting. But he says he won't, Terry.
- 14:46And I just, I just had to think of what the what the word means
- 14:53there is to linger or delay. And I just want to say that, you
- 14:56know, when, when it is not time yet, you're not delaying, you
- 15:02know, So when I tell my kids to go at 3:00, you guys go take out
- 15:06the trash. They're not, they're not
- 15:08delaying their work until 3:00. After that, now they're
- 15:13lingering. Now they're tarrying.
- 15:16And So what I, what I'm trying to say is when, when it says
- 15:19that God will not tarry is when the fullness of time has come,
- 15:25he will be here not a moment later, that the issue that he is
- 15:29not here yet is that it's not time yet.
- 15:33You know, we, we can rest knowing that he's not going to
- 15:36hold back and say, well, you know, let's give him another,
- 15:39you know, five years. Let's give him five more years.
- 15:42That's not the case. He knows that time and when that
- 15:45time is right, he will be here for or we will go to him or
- 15:48whatever, however you want to say that.
- 15:50Jesus actually warns against that thinking of all.
- 15:53He's just tearing. The Lord delays His coming in in
- 15:56Matthew 2448. But if that evil servant shall
- 16:00say in his heart, my Lord delayeth his coming or while the
- 16:04bridegroom tarried, it seems like the bridegroom's taking too
- 16:08long that the day slumbered and slept in Matthew 25.
- 16:11And so that that concept is well, is well versed in the in
- 16:15the Gospels, Jesus kind of says, don't think that the Lord will
- 16:19delay his coming. So that the people, the evil
- 16:21servant thinks that the Lord is tarrying that he's delaying his
- 16:24coming, but he knows when he's coming.
- 16:27Yeah, I just, I just want people to understand that God is not
- 16:30slack concerning his promises when it's time, he'll be here,
- 16:35you know, it's for sure. All right. 38 Now the just shall
- 16:42live by faith. But if any man draw back, my
- 16:45soul shall have no pleasure in him.
- 16:49And it says, I had looked up here in Habakkuk. 24 says,
- 17:00Behold, his soul, which is lifted up is not upright in him,
- 17:04but the just shall live by faith.
- 17:06I just thought that was as almost directly there quoted,
- 17:11but very, very interesting verse.
- 17:14Go Ahead aired with it. Yeah, I just, I think Dan done a
- 17:21really good job of kind of summing up.
- 17:23The last. Part of this book with what he
- 17:25said there. But yeah, I guess I would just
- 17:28say that I think verse 38 is it is a compare and contrast
- 17:35because the just shall live by faith.
- 17:38And like Dan said earlier that that that patience is just faith
- 17:42drawn out. So you would be comparing
- 17:45somebody that is living by faith with somebody that is drawing
- 17:49back from what they believe or what they have confidence in or
- 17:53what God has promised, right? I mean that that's the way I see
- 17:56that is it's a compare and contrast.
- 17:58The just are going to live by faith.
- 18:00They're going to continue to believe what God has promised.
- 18:02They're going to have that patience to continue to look for
- 18:06that promise, regardless how long it takes for it to come to
- 18:10them. But then if a person draws back,
- 18:13if he says, I don't think this is worth waiting on or I don't
- 18:17think this is worth anything, then he says my soul shall have
- 18:20no pleasure in him. So that is that is the and I
- 18:26know we kind of struggle sometimes with with what weak
- 18:31faith or whether you believe or stop believing or whatever.
- 18:37I know sometimes people struggle with that.
- 18:39But I understand that there are, I think the Bible totally
- 18:44accounts that there are moments that we are that faith is can be
- 18:50weak. It can be whatever, but there's
- 18:54a difference. I guess my point is there's a
- 18:56difference in having a moment of weak faith or a time or a spell
- 19:03of faith that is weak in that of actually drawing back from what
- 19:07you believe, right? You know what I mean?
- 19:09Like I would distinguish those two things one from another is
- 19:12he's not saying the guy that draws back is the guy that is
- 19:18consumed with the with the, the troubles of life.
- 19:22And he's a little distracted and he's, you know, we've all talked
- 19:25about the things that that will pull us away from our closeness
- 19:28with God. And I think that this is not
- 19:31that this is a drawing back. This is, I mean, like we said,
- 19:34that's the whole point of the book.
- 19:35This is a stopping having confidence in what you started
- 19:40your confidence out on. It's not just a a bad day,
- 19:44right? It's kind of a reiteration
- 19:46actually of verse 26, little bit.
- 19:49Oh yeah, if you will. Yeah, I guess.
- 19:52If you if you look there where that word draw back, one of the
- 19:56words it uses there is to withdraw.
- 19:59So if we think of like, let's just say like America.
- 20:05You know, with we withdrew our troops out of Iraq.
- 20:08Or Iran or whatever that was here a year or two ago, whenever
- 20:12was I'm not booked up on that stuff.
- 20:14But So what they did is they left that country, right?
- 20:18They they totally withdrew from that country.
- 20:21And so that's kind of the picture that it that I see here.
- 20:24And that's exactly what you were saying, Aaron.
- 20:26It's not, it's not a bad day in our life where our faith we
- 20:31don't have as solid faith in God.
- 20:35This is an actual turning away or withdrawing from salvation in
- 20:44Christ. Because the next verse kind of
- 20:47talks about that. Yeah.
- 20:49Then. Yeah, very much.
- 20:51Just to reiterate the same thing.
- 20:53I was thinking the same thing verse 26 for if we sin
- 20:56willfully. This is kind of another
- 20:57description of that is not living by faith that drawing out
- 21:01of our faith. We continue in that some people
- 21:04have this once saved, always saved kind of mentality towards
- 21:08Christianity and that is that you.
- 21:10I once prayed a prayer, I once confessed my sins.
- 21:13I once walked down the aisle or I once got baptized.
- 21:16Therefore I'm still safe. So I mean, I can kind of live,
- 21:19however do whatever, walk however I want.
- 21:22And it's just this assurance that God wrote my name down and
- 21:25there's no way he can ever blot it out.
- 21:27So things are fine and good. That's that's the American
- 21:30Christianity to a large degree, right?
- 21:32It's this. Just make a decision for Jesus.
- 21:35Put your hand up after a sermon or something like that.
- 21:38Yeah, but he's telling us very clearly here that those that are
- 21:42saved in the end are those that live by faith, that that only
- 21:46believers are saved, not unbelievers, not those that are
- 21:49going about their lives, not actually trusting Jesus.
- 21:52But for the the these verses bother sincere Christians or
- 21:58sincere religious folks more than they do the loose people.
- 22:02For some reason, the loose Christians don't really read
- 22:04this. They're not concerned about it.
- 22:05They're just secure in their false sense of security.
- 22:08But the people that concern me are the ones that think that
- 22:11they can just suddenly fall off of Christianity by mistake.
- 22:15Like like Aaron was talking about, they had a rough day.
- 22:17They feel bad for what they've done.
- 22:19Now they're like, well, I'm not sure if I'm still a Christian
- 22:21now because I've I've fallen in some way.
- 22:24I've slipped up in some way. He's not talking about that.
- 22:26He's talking about drawing back unto perdition, as he's going to
- 22:30call it in the next verse. If any man's drawback, God's
- 22:34soul will have no pleasure in that man.
- 22:37You you've now done despite and the spirit of grace.
- 22:40You've counted the blood of the covenant wherewith you, a
- 22:42sanctified and unholy thing. You're no longer trusting in
- 22:46that. You've completely departed.
- 22:48You're you're not still wishing like, oh God, please save me.
- 22:51No, that that's not your mentality anymore.
- 22:53You're like, OK, I tried the Christian thing.
- 22:55I'm going back to Judaism or I'm going to some other way of
- 22:59justification. So it it's a reiteration of the
- 23:02whole book constantly here, I think, but it, it pays to
- 23:06continue to go over that because there should be a fear in those
- 23:10loose nominal Christians to say, hey, look, if you've drawn back,
- 23:13if you're not living by faith, God's soul has no pleasure in
- 23:17you. Whatever you think you are,
- 23:19whatever you think that claim to faith was, it doesn't please God
- 23:23in any way. And in your lack of security or
- 23:26lack of confidence, your lack of holding to what Christ has done
- 23:30is in no way pleasurable to God. And the just shall live by
- 23:34faith. And as we're going to see in the
- 23:36next verse, we don't want to draw back onto perdition.
- 23:39And he encourages us that that's not the case.
- 23:42So. Yeah, very good.
- 23:44And that's yeah. So I'll read verse 39.
- 23:47But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition, but of them
- 23:51that believe to the saving of the soul.
- 23:54I think that is crystal clear what he is telling us.
- 23:58There should be no question. And like what you said that
- 24:01about, you know, some of them being unconcerned.
- 24:04If you would actually read this and just read this verse, I
- 24:08mean, you can see very clearly that it's the unbeliever that's
- 24:12in trouble, the believers, OK, That the entire eternal
- 24:18destination hinges on that one thing, whether you believe in
- 24:22him or not, right there. Yeah, it's it's like it's like
- 24:28he said the positive in 38 first, you know, the Joshua
- 24:31lived by faith. That's the positive.
- 24:33The negative was drawing back and then he reverses it in 39
- 24:37and says the negative first. You know, we're not them who
- 24:40draw back under prediction, but then that believe to the saving
- 24:44of soul. So you could you could equal
- 24:48living by faith is believing to the saving of the soul and
- 24:53drawing back is equal to well, he says drawback in both places.
- 24:57You know, like you use the same term drawback, drawback and
- 25:01equals under perdition, right? That's what that equals.
- 25:05So I think you could, you know, say what I'm saying, like you
- 25:08could equate those two things. Living by faith is believing to
- 25:12the saving of soul and drawing back is going to equal
- 25:16perdition. Like I like that.
- 25:18He just, you know, like I said, he said the positive 1st and
- 25:21then the negative and 38 and then switched it and said the
- 25:23negative 1st and then the positive side of it.
- 25:26Yep, Melvin. Yeah, I think you've covered it
- 25:30pretty well really. I there's just one thing that I
- 25:34want to say is that he says there but we are not of them
- 25:38that draw back onto tradition. And so another thing that comes
- 25:43from my mind is This is why this is not just a bad day you're
- 25:47having and and your lack of faith in pricing from a
- 25:51day-to-day basis is because the drawback under perdition.
- 25:55Perdition means damnable or destruction or to perish.
- 25:59And so it's not like it's not a just a how would you say, I
- 26:06don't know what the right word, but it's not a light thing.
- 26:08In other words, is what I'm trying to say.
- 26:10And so, but of we I, I just want to take comfort in that he is
- 26:18saying we are not of them that drawbacks tradition, but of them
- 26:22that to believe in the saving of the soul.
- 26:25And like you were saying, Aaron, believing is to the saving of
- 26:30the soul, obviously is all part of faith.
- 26:32And because he's introducing faith here now into the next
- 26:36chapter, we're going to go through what actually living by
- 26:40faith looks like. And so he's introducing that and
- 26:44that has to do with believing to the saving of the soul through
- 26:48Christ and only Christ. Yeah, What I get out of these
- 26:54passages like this is that I don't think God wants us to be,
- 26:59what's the term, the a theologian that puts God in this
- 27:05perfect box where this is how God operates, this is how he
- 27:10doesn't operate. He said this, Therefore this
- 27:13verse doesn't mean what it says here.
- 27:14I think he wants us just to take him at his word.
- 27:17And that illustration, Mike Pearl uses it.
- 27:19And I heard a preacher named Timothy Keller use the exact
- 27:21same illustration about Paul standing before Caesar.
- 27:26God told Paul that he would stand before Caesar.
- 27:29Paul didn't want to go on the ship because he said there's a
- 27:32storm coming. He says that if we go, we might
- 27:34all die. But then the ship captain says
- 27:36we're going anyway, get on board.
- 27:38And he says, OK, well, I'll get on board.
- 27:39And then he prays and God clearly tells Paul, you are all
- 27:43going to make it. Not a soul on this ship will be
- 27:45lost. He says, Sir, as I perceive that
- 27:48this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the
- 27:51ship and the lading, but also of our lives.
- 27:54That's what he warns them. But they didn't listen to Paul
- 27:57and they set sail anyway. And then a few days later when
- 28:01they're all distraught and thinking that they're going to
- 28:03die after three days of this constant wind, they started
- 28:06tossing out the tackling of the ship and so on and so forth.
- 28:09Many days the sun and the stars, whatever appeared, it says.
- 28:12And then after long abstinence, Paul stood forth in the midst of
- 28:16them. This is Acts 2721.
- 28:17And he said, Sirs, you should have hearkened unto me and not
- 28:21have loosed from Crete, and have gained this great of this harm
- 28:23and loss. And now I exhort you to be of
- 28:26good cheer, for there shall be no loss of any man's life among
- 28:30you, but of the ship. So Paul originally said, we're
- 28:33all going to make it. Paul knew he was going to stand
- 28:36before Caesar East. Now he then he tells them, he
- 28:38says, if we go, we might all, we might all perish.
- 28:41And now after long abstinence, he says, it's OK, the ship's
- 28:44going to be destroyed, but we're all going to make it.
- 28:46Everyone cheered. They were cheered by that
- 28:48message. They took food and they started
- 28:49eating. And then some of the seamen got
- 28:51to the point where they thought, well, I'm going to bail on the
- 28:54rest of these passengers. I'm going to get into the
- 28:55lifeboat and I'm going to make my way to shore after they had
- 28:58anchored the ship there. And Paul says to them, except
- 29:02you abide in this ship, you cannot be saved.
- 29:05And he actually says that they're all going to perish if
- 29:07they get out of the ship. So Paul, Paul wasn't this kind
- 29:11of feel theologian that would put God in a box and say, no,
- 29:15no, God, you can't say that because you said this before.
- 29:18Well, here God has told us that he will not lose any.
- 29:24He's told us that as many as he preordained them, He also
- 29:27sanctified them. That he sanctified them He also
- 29:29justified, then he justified, then he also glorified.
- 29:32So we can now argue with God and say, no God, you said I'd be
- 29:35glorified. No, He said, if you don't
- 29:37believe, if you don't continue to hold fast, you will draw back
- 29:41under perdition. No, but God, you said no.
- 29:43I'm telling you now that if you don't live by faith, you will
- 29:47perish. Oh, so I better turn back.
- 29:49Yes, turn back, get back in the ship.
- 29:51Because if you get out of the ship, there's no hope for you.
- 29:53So what happens in the end? Well, the men get back in the
- 29:56ship. They don't go into the lifeboat.
- 29:58Everybody is saved alive. And so God uses these kinds of
- 30:02means. He, he strongly warns them,
- 30:04saying do not draw back. My soul will have no pleasure in
- 30:07you. There's no pleasure for the
- 30:09death in God's sight for those kinds of people.
- 30:13And there will be perdition on the other side of turning back
- 30:15on your faith towards Christ. But that warning in itself will
- 30:21will cause believers to stay in the ship.
- 30:24If you know what I'm saying. And then he actually says, he
- 30:26reiterates right after he says do not draw back.
- 30:29But we are not of them that drawback.
- 30:31So he while he's warning them not to draw back, he also
- 30:35encourages them to say, but we're not of those.
- 30:37So in the same way that Paul was kind of saying don't get out of
- 30:40the ship. If you do, we're all going to
- 30:43perish. What would have happened if
- 30:44those soldiers would have gotten out of the ship?
- 30:47Well, they they would have died, but God said they wouldn't.
- 30:50Yeah, they wouldn't because they had to stay in the ship.
- 30:52Did they stay in the ship? Yeah, they did.
- 30:54And so we're not, we don't need to play these theological mind
- 30:57games with God and say, yeah, but you said here, you said
- 31:00there. If God says I am firmly grasped
- 31:03in his hand and nobody can Take Me Out of it, I rejoice in that.
- 31:07I don't ever want to. I don't ever want to take that
- 31:09from somebody. Don't, don't second guess your
- 31:12security in Christ. Rejoice in it when God says
- 31:15don't turn back or else perdition, don't, don't try to
- 31:19minimize that. Don't try to take away the the
- 31:21severity of that by saying, Oh no, but God said you can't.
- 31:25No, no, just let both of them stand because both of them have
- 31:28their purpose and both of them have their place.
- 31:31The strong encouragement, the strong warning and the warning
- 31:33will serve the purpose of keeping us in the faith as well.
- 31:37So God uses means to keep us, but it's still him keeping us.
- 31:42We are kept by the power of God unto salvation ready to be
- 31:44revealed in the last time. So it's not up to us to keep
- 31:47ourselves, but we have to continue in faith.
- 31:50And he's going to keep us in the faith through these kinds of
- 31:53warnings and, and all kinds of different things, like even if
- 31:56he goes further in First Corinthians and he actually save
- 32:00some by killing off their body, it seems are weak and sickly and
- 32:03many sleep and so on. That's a slightly different
- 32:06topic. But God's job is to keep us in
- 32:08the faith. One of the methods he uses to
- 32:10keep us in the faith is by warning us sternly that there's
- 32:13no hope outside of this ship. You better stay in right?
- 32:16Sorry, that was a little long winded.
- 32:18No, that's really good and I appreciate hearing that because
- 32:21they're it's not either or, but it's both true, whatever that is
- 32:27true. Even if you could theologically
- 32:31put about odds with each other. I was just wondering if any of
- 32:35you have any input on kind of overview on Hebrews 10 before we
- 32:40dive into 11 there at all. Any anyone cared?
- 32:43I know, I mean, I know it's been pretty methodical, just like
- 32:46take a 10,000 foot beauty of anything that comes to mind
- 32:49regarding Hebrews 9 or 10 or both or whatever.
- 32:55I guess I would just say that you you kindly had to me, it
- 33:00started probably an 8. I don't know, maybe in seven you
- 33:04could say. But I feel like he has we said
- 33:07this over and over again. He says it several ways several
- 33:12times. He gives us this.
- 33:14Well, I mean, I can personally say it was one of the most eye
- 33:18opening set of chapters. I.
- 33:20Ever. Encountered as I was seeing the
- 33:23gospel like Hebrews 8-9 and ten. Just really opened my eyes and I
- 33:28think he knows that it has that kind of power in it and that's
- 33:31why he comes around here at the end of 10 in my opinion.
- 33:35I mean, it's just my thought on it.
- 33:36But in my opinion, that's why he comes back around at 10 and ends
- 33:40it this way because it is so powerful.
- 33:43It is so eye opening. It is so methodical in the sense
- 33:46of this is actually the what happened, take your sins away,
- 33:53right? Isn't it's a real story.
- 33:54Like I say this all the time, I've had several lessons on
- 33:57this. It's not a just because God said
- 34:01so. It's a actual, you could say
- 34:04like a legal document if you will, that God said this is the
- 34:09way it is. And in order to be justified,
- 34:12this atonement has to be made. Here's a pattern of how it's
- 34:15going to happen. Here's the real time that it
- 34:18happens. And he just lays it out so well,
- 34:21like I said, just so perfectly that I think it's fitting that
- 34:26this warning comes in at the end of 10 and says, now listen,
- 34:30here's the facts. Do not draw back from this.
- 34:33Like they may have never heard it so clearly.
- 34:35And now he's like, don't draw back from this.
- 34:38And then he's going to give us, I think in Chapter 11, the
- 34:41examples of what it actually looks like and work, right?
- 34:45He's going to say, here's how it plays out.
- 34:48Here's how this plays out in real life.
- 34:51Yep, good, Good idea. Good.
- 34:53Yeah, that's kind of what I see too.
- 34:55It's just it is explained to us very clearly what what ha, what
- 35:02Christ did for to turn for our sins.
- 35:06And and alongside of that, he is also comparing it to the old
- 35:11law, like, you know, this is the law house on it and this is the
- 35:15new, the new way, the new, the new team words he uses is a more
- 35:20excellent ministry, new covenant, more perfect
- 35:24Tabernacle, the the bet, a better high priest.
- 35:31I know it's kind of a word. And so, yeah, it's just really
- 35:35explaining it to us what salvation in Christ looks like.
- 35:41Yep. Deb.
- 35:44Yeah, I think just the very much the same thing as you guys are
- 35:47saying already. But if if anyone's lacking
- 35:50security, meaning that they're, they're feeling like they don't
- 35:54measure up, that they are not quite clean enough, that they're
- 35:58not quite good enough or that they've done too many things to
- 36:01fail God in one way or the other.
- 36:03This these couple chapters, especially 9 and 10 should just
- 36:07lift you up out of that and cause such celebration in your
- 36:10soul and such confidence before God that you can boldly approach
- 36:15him at any time, any place. Under the old covenant.
- 36:18We had no such thing as this. There was absolutely no
- 36:21semblance of this kind of confidence, this kind of
- 36:23boldness. Everything was with timidity,
- 36:26with fear, and rightfully so. Our our God is a consuming fire
- 36:30is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
- 36:33We had we should have that reverence for him.
- 36:35But if Hebrews 9 and 10 are true that there was one offering made
- 36:40for sins for forever, and Christ sat down and all of our sins are
- 36:44paid for and the only thing that we need to do is hold to that by
- 36:49faith, then then we're completely free.
- 36:52Like we're literally off the hook for every single thing
- 36:55we've ever done. And it might sound to some
- 36:58people like, well, then us let us do evil that good may come.
- 37:01Their damnation is just as, as Paul puts it in Romans.
- 37:05We we should have that kind of clear conscience toward God, no
- 37:10matter how badly we may have messed up, because that's the
- 37:13only way to actually get your life cleaned up.
- 37:16Everything else will always just cause more condemnation, more
- 37:20guilt, more shame, because you'll never ever get there.
- 37:23But if you can celebrate in this one thing, Christ Jesus took my
- 37:27sins, past, present, future, all sins of all sinners at all
- 37:31times, and He laid himself down. He made one sacrifice.
- 37:34God was pleased with that sacrifice, and He now sat down
- 37:38at the right hand of God, so much so that any Sinner, no
- 37:41matter how great, can come to him right now and have complete
- 37:45once for all forgiveness. Then there should be a constant
- 37:49confidence no matter what. You know, it should really
- 37:53'cause that the only warning is continue to believe that,
- 37:57continue to trust that. And that's Hebrews 9 and 10,
- 38:00very, very enlightening and confidence boosting in what
- 38:04Christ has done. And like Aaron said it, it
- 38:06describes what he did to actually accomplish this for us.
- 38:10Yeah, Yeah. That's really good and like I
- 38:15think Aaron had mentioned too, is that, you know, now we're
- 38:18going to talk we're we're going to hear the word faith a lot
- 38:22here in a Lavin, of course, which is what a result of
- 38:27believing something. You know, it is what you do.
- 38:30Faith is what happens right kind of a thing.
- 38:33So this is this is kind of a newish word actually for Hebrews
- 38:38here thus far. This is going to be very
- 38:42interesting going forward. So I will read verse one of of
- 38:4811 and we'll see where this all goes.
- 38:53So he says and he's I, I would say that he's not actually
- 38:56really switching gears here. This is a continuation.
- 38:59Remember, the chapter marks were not there in the original.
- 39:03This is this is just a reference point for us.
- 39:07So he's, he's going on with the story here and he says now faith
- 39:10is a substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not
- 39:13seen. I think that he is in
- 39:15endeavoring to describe the word faith here and he's going to do
- 39:20so through a series of short stories basically, or short
- 39:26accounts through this as we go. I just, I just want to, I guess
- 39:32the one thing that I always think about it in Hebrews 11, I
- 39:36like that it says that faith, faith is the substance and a
- 39:40substance is actually a, a thing, You know, it's not a pie
- 39:46in the sky, you know, whatever, whatever faith is actually the
- 39:51substance of the things that we hope for.
- 39:57I find that interesting. But anyway, go ahead, go ahead
- 40:00and. You know, I never, it's funny.
- 40:04I honestly, it's probably one of the first times I've ever said
- 40:07it this way before, but you all I would nor I'll tell you what I
- 40:11would normally do. I would normally take verse one
- 40:15and say, OK, he he gave us the definition.
- 40:19Now he's going to show us what that looks like in the rest of
- 40:21the chapter. But it actually just hit me
- 40:22because we came out of 10 that you could actually go, you could
- 40:27do that. You can certainly can do that.
- 40:28You could go forward and say this is what here's the
- 40:32substance. You could say in 11 here's the
- 40:34substance of what they believe. They did this.
- 40:36They did this by faith, right? But you could also go backwards
- 40:41like we just came out of and say, you know, when he says
- 40:47that, that cast not away your confidence, which you have,
- 40:52which has great recompense of reward.
- 40:54In other words, he's he's saying in the previous chapter that
- 41:00they need well, I read that one that was 35.
- 41:03Cast not away there for your confidence, which hath great
- 41:05recompense reward 36 said for you have need of patience that
- 41:09you have done the will of God. You might receive the promise.
- 41:12So he is reminding them in 10 to think about what you believe.
- 41:18Think about the things that you hoped for, think about the
- 41:23things that you did because of something that you've not seen.
- 41:28Right. Like in other words, all my
- 41:30point is is I would always take one and go forward and say this
- 41:33is what it looks like. But you can back up and say he's
- 41:37telling them what it means to have faith or encouraging them
- 41:41what to do. How to have faith is to remember
- 41:44the former days. Remember he said that in verse
- 41:4732. Remember the former days.
- 41:49Remember that you did something, you gave up something because of
- 41:54something you believed that was faith, right?
- 41:56In other words, he's reminding them, I think 11 could be said
- 42:02that you could, I know I've said it three times, but you can look
- 42:06back at this and say that's what he was encouraging them to do is
- 42:10have faith when he told them to remember the former days, to
- 42:13hold that confidence, to continue to believe in that
- 42:16promise that they were given and think about what they had gave
- 42:20up. Because like I said, if you
- 42:22think about their particular situation, think about the
- 42:25people he wrote it to, he's saying to them, you did this
- 42:30because you believed. You suffered this because you
- 42:33believed. In other words, you could say
- 42:36that faith. He's not given them a definition
- 42:39of something they need to acquire.
- 42:41He's actually given them the definition of something they
- 42:43already had, right? And saying, don't forget that.
- 42:48Don't depart from that. You've already you've already
- 42:55had the substance and the evidence of faith.
- 42:59Don't. Stop having that.
- 43:01Right. But like I said, that's just
- 43:03really, I've never thought of it like that till we just read it
- 43:06tonight. But I've never went backwards
- 43:08and looked at the definition. But that's what I just thought
- 43:11about. Yeah, that that's interesting
- 43:13because like you said, in the end, when the Bible was written,
- 43:17it was not necessarily written in chapters.
- 43:20It's just a continuation of of the letter.
- 43:22And if you go back to Hebrews 10/22, it says this, let us draw
- 43:28near with the true heart in full assurance of faith, having a
- 43:32heart sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed
- 43:35with pure water. So yeah, that's right.
- 43:38I would have read this too, thinking, you know, that from
- 43:41here on through 11, he's talking about faith.
- 43:45But in reality, if you look at the whole picture of Hebrews,
- 43:49he's been talking, I mean, he has talked a little bit about
- 43:53faith before, right? And so that is one of the things
- 43:58that stood out to me too. And the other thing is, is that
- 44:02what stood out to me is he says now faith is the substance of
- 44:06things. So in other words, faith has a
- 44:08substance like it is a thing, right?
- 44:12It is something. And so we're going to see what
- 44:16that looks like in the next verses here.
- 44:19But it's just interesting to me that faith is something like
- 44:26it's a substance. It's there.
- 44:27Like, in other words, you were talking earlier about, you know,
- 44:32people that just, you know, say they went to the altar and, you
- 44:36know, asked to use into the heart and that's it.
- 44:38They just live however they want to after that.
- 44:40And and that's so true. Like, I'm not saying I, I think
- 44:46people can actually truly get saved in that way because I've
- 44:50heard of testimonies of that, you know, of people going to the
- 44:54altar and getting saved. We're not saying that you can't
- 44:56get saved in that way. But the simple fact is, is that
- 45:00after you have the need in Christ, there is it is going to
- 45:05show in your life like there is going to be a substance.
- 45:10You're going to act differently, you're going to live
- 45:13differently. You you are not going to be the
- 45:16same. The the Bible says that you're a
- 45:18new creature. It says in Corinthians.
- 45:20So that's what stood out to be here.
- 45:25Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I think if if we didn't
- 45:29have chapter 10 here, and I know a lot of people actually do,
- 45:32like you hear Hebrews 11 preached quite a lot in churches
- 45:36that wouldn't preach Hebrews 9 and 10.
- 45:38And it's almost, it's almost like go have faith, go build a
- 45:44boat, go take on giants, go go have lots and lots of faith.
- 45:49But that's not how faith works. Like you need a description of
- 45:53what is real, of what actually happened, of what builds your
- 45:57confidence. And then faith is something that
- 45:59happens. It's like, oh, yeah, of course,
- 46:02of course I trust in this. I have absolute confidence.
- 46:06That's in fact the word that's translated substance here is
- 46:10translated in two places, 2nd Corinthians 9 four and 2nd
- 46:13Corinthians 1117. In this way it says lest happily
- 46:18if they of Macedonia come with me and find you unprepared, we
- 46:21that we say not you should be ashamed of this same confident
- 46:26boasting. It's the same Greek word
- 46:28translated substance is translated confident boasting
- 46:32and then in second Corinthians 11/17 it says that which I
- 46:36speak. I speak not after the Lord, but
- 46:38as it were, foolishly in this confidence of boasting.
- 46:42So when you look at the word substance now, faith is the
- 46:45confident boasting of things hoped for.
- 46:49Right. Wait, that's.
- 46:50Good. What are you hoping for?
- 46:51What? What are you convinced of it?
- 46:54Like the only reason Noah built a boat was because he was
- 46:57convinced there was rain coming. You know it wasn't because I'm
- 47:01going to try to build a boat and see if rain will come.
- 47:03You know it's you can't get the cart before the horse there.
- 47:07It's substance. It's, it's the actual only thing
- 47:10that we have. It's the only evidence that we
- 47:12have the word. The word evidence is also
- 47:14translated interestingly, where it's translated as the word
- 47:18reproof. All Scripture is given by
- 47:21inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for
- 47:23reproof, for correction, for instruction, righteousness.
- 47:27So now faith is the substance. It's the confident boasting and
- 47:31it's the evidence. It's the reproof.
- 47:33It's the proof of things not seen.
- 47:35And so you could mix this word, the sentence up and say it in
- 47:38all different ways, right? Faith is the substance and
- 47:41evidence of things hoped for but not seen that we're, we believe
- 47:47that Christ did something behind the scenes.
- 47:49We believe he took his blood up into the most holy place that he
- 47:53deposited it there before the throne.
- 47:55We trust this thing. It's, it's the only, I mean,
- 47:58can't you see that I'm living according to it?
- 48:01I'm rejoicing because of it. I'm getting over my guilt and my
- 48:05shame and my condemnation. I'm living for the glory of God
- 48:08and for the sake of other people.
- 48:10Why? Well, because I'm absolutely
- 48:12convinced that's the, it's my faith is the substance of that,
- 48:16of that thing, the thing that I'm hoping for, right.
- 48:19So substance is this real physical matter.
- 48:21As you guys have already said, a person that has lots of things
- 48:25would we would say he has much substance but we are made
- 48:29partakers of Christ. If we hold the beginning of our
- 48:32confidence. That's that same word again
- 48:33confidence substance steadfast unto the end.
- 48:37So it's very much tied to chapter 10.
- 48:41Faith is the substance and evidence of things hoped for but
- 48:44not seen. Very, very encouraging verse
- 48:47that kind of defines what how we should believe.
- 48:50Not trying to get faith, but trusting in the thing that that
- 48:54we're convinced of. So when you're trying to get
- 48:56somebody to believe, don't tell them have faith, just have
- 48:59faith. Just have faith.
- 49:00Tell them again what Christ has done.
- 49:03Tell them again that God was satisfied.
- 49:05Show them again what Christ did to accomplish, and then their
- 49:08faith starts getting boosted, right?
- 49:10It's not about trying to have faith.
- 49:12It's having confidence in the thing that we have glory in,
- 49:16right? And I get.
- 49:19To say what I was trying to say maybe.
- 49:21A little clearer earlier is I. Think he's trying to tell them
- 49:24by this definition, you all have faith in Christ.
- 49:28You went through sufferings for Him.
- 49:31You gave up these things for him.
- 49:33Like keep that, keep that going, that willingness to suffer, that
- 49:41willingness to go on to be, you know, a partaker of them that
- 49:45are used like that. Like that's that's what I was
- 49:48trying to say is I've never saw it like that, that he is
- 49:51actually telling them. You all did have that right.
- 49:55You know, I mean when he, when he reminds me that you all
- 49:57already have faith. Keep it up.
- 50:01Well, and that's so good what you're saying, Dan, I, I looked
- 50:04up that word. I should have looked at it
- 50:05before you're dead on. That's what that word was.
- 50:08It says assurance and confidence, though, when you
- 50:11look at it in that way, like he's just got done explaining
- 50:15what the confidence that we have right in Christ.
- 50:19And and that's so good because when we're confident in
- 50:21something, if you are fully assured, if you're confident in
- 50:25something, then you are going to live different, right?
- 50:28If you're not totally confident in something, then you're and
- 50:34you're just kind of, you know, wishy washing along, then that's
- 50:38how you know your life is going to be.
- 50:41And so that's very good. I like that.
- 50:43I didn't. I didn't catch that.
- 50:45That goes with, you know, like so you can believe or not
- 50:49believe, but the to the degree that you have confidence in what
- 50:55you believe, that is your degree of faith.
- 50:58You know, So I, I've, I've said this before about this verse.
- 51:04I, I think this is, I mean, it's a lot, it's a much quoted verse
- 51:0711/1 here. Of course you see it, see it all
- 51:09over the place. But so I, I like it.
- 51:13I would say that a magnified glass or a what do we call it
- 51:19about a telescope, but the little microscope.
- 51:22Microscope. That is the substance, that
- 51:26little finely ground and polished piece of glass is the
- 51:31substance that gives me confidence that germs exist.
- 51:35It allows me to see something that I cannot see.
- 51:42And what he is saying here, he's saying that faith is the
- 51:45substance that allows us to, it is the evidence of the things
- 51:49that we cannot actually see. Like so we look through this
- 51:54finally polished a ground piece of glass to see that is a
- 51:57substance. That glass is a substance that
- 51:58we look through to see a germ and therefore have confidence
- 52:03that they exist, right? And faith is what allows us to
- 52:06see things that we cannot otherwise see, and that's the
- 52:10substance that we look. And faith isn't really even the
- 52:13point that we brag on, though it's confidence that we have in
- 52:18him, right? So I always have this, this
- 52:20illustration in my head. Like you come to this great
- 52:22cavern, there's a forest fire behind you.
- 52:24There's a huge gulf in front of you.
- 52:26And you got to get over to the other side to get away from this
- 52:28fire. Now, if there was a rickety old
- 52:31rope bridge with one of their strings already stressed snapped
- 52:35and some of the boards breaking through and I get on that thing
- 52:37and get across or maybe be halfway across, you would say,
- 52:41man, you've got a lot, a lot of confidence.
- 52:43But that then my faith would be something to brag about.
- 52:46But just next to it, there's this massive concrete bridge and
- 52:49there's, you know, 40,000 LB Mack trucks driving over it.
- 52:53And I walk across that bridge. You wouldn't talk much about my
- 52:56faith, right? Like it just wouldn't be a point
- 52:59of, of issue. My confidence is something
- 53:02absolutely secure. It's not, I'm not trying to have
- 53:05faith in it. I'm convinced of the thing to
- 53:07get me across. Like, continue to walk on that
- 53:11path, continue to trust in what he's done right.
- 53:14Well, and a lot of you know, you hear people say, well, you know,
- 53:18I just need more faith, like I need to believe more.
- 53:21I need to. But no, in reality, you just
- 53:24need to be confident. You need to be more confident in
- 53:26what Christ did for you, right So.
- 53:29And the and the way that you get more confident, I think Cam
- 53:33commented there and he said the second part, that he would
- 53:37mental competence to keep God's promise in memory is often
- 53:40lacking. Yeah, that's why sound teaching
- 53:43and frequent Bible reading is critical for our development.
- 53:46What develops my faith and my confidence in God is to read
- 53:51stuff like what we've been reading here in Hebrews 10.
- 53:53That's right. If you take that to the bank,
- 53:55you have great confidence that your eternal security is there
- 54:01and was going to stay there. Yeah, well, obviously faith
- 54:05cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
- 54:07So I mean, it is true. It's not something that verse
- 54:11there tells you that. It is not something that you
- 54:15just stir up, work up, you know, get excited up and and it comes
- 54:23out. It is something that comes from
- 54:29at least hearing a story, right? You.
- 54:32At least have to hear a story. I mean, you at least have to
- 54:35hear something in order to have confidence in it, right?
- 54:38It'd be like saying you have confidence, something that you
- 54:41never heard or that you don't know.
- 54:43I mean, we'd say that's just ridiculous, right?
- 54:45You have to have a story, you have to have something that you
- 54:49have heard, been told, read whatever to have confidence in
- 54:53it. And and I think that that is
- 54:55what you're going to see in the in the next chapter is what
- 55:00these people did because of the confidence they had.
- 55:03And this is just AI don't know. Maybe I'll say it again in
- 55:07another time, but every time I think about this, this Hebrews
- 55:11Chapter 11, I always think that that is what God has always
- 55:18desired is for people to believe him.
- 55:23And I, and I'm, I'm saying I and I, and I'm not saying this to
- 55:28pretend that there's not different dispensations, but it
- 55:31is true that regardless of the time from Adam till the end, it
- 55:36is whether or not people will believe in God and have
- 55:39confidence in God, right? That is the thing that has
- 55:43always been what God is looking for.
- 55:46And I don't think anybody ever is, is accounted righteous
- 55:52without it, right? I mean, it's always been that
- 55:55way and will always be that way up till the time he returns.
- 55:59That is, that is the because that hit me so plain because I
- 56:03used to think. I used to think, what is it?
- 56:06I mean, was it that there was something people did back then
- 56:10and now God changed it to a different set of things that I
- 56:14do now? I mean, I think we all but had
- 56:16some kind of works based system. We all thought that it's like it
- 56:20was a it was a set of rules that please God then, or it's a new
- 56:23set of rules now or whatever. But no, it's actually always
- 56:26been whether or not you have confidence in God.
- 56:28Like that is what it's always been.
- 56:31That's it. Yep.
- 56:34Habakkuk, what I just read, you know there already.
- 56:37He said that the just shall live by faith.
- 56:40Yeah, and and God takes pleasure in that, right?
- 56:43Because he said he does not take pleasure in those that draw
- 56:46back, you know, so that's. Good stuff.
- 56:51One one final thought that's kind of slightly off topic, but
- 56:54when you look up heat Greek or Hebrew words that are translated
- 56:57into English, sometimes you get some interesting texts, right?
- 57:00But in in Hebrews chapter 1, so same author, he uses this same
- 57:05Greek word he says in Hebrews chapter one, verse 3, Speaking
- 57:09of Jesus, who being the brightness of his glory and the
- 57:12express image of his person is the same word as substance.
- 57:21So Jesus is the person of God. He is the express, he's the
- 57:25evidence, he's the substance of who God is, right.
- 57:28And so when you think about our, our faith is like the embodiment
- 57:32of what we believe. It's, it's the evidence.
- 57:34The only thing I can point to, like sometimes people will say,
- 57:37well, how do you know it's true? Well, I, I believe it, I'm
- 57:40trusting it, I'm convinced of it.
- 57:42I'm walking according to it, right.
- 57:44It's it's like the person personhood of my belief.
- 57:47And it's kind of a weird thing to explain.
- 57:49And then maybe it's not a perfect carryover, but the word
- 57:53person is the same word as substance.
- 57:55So I don't know what you guys make of that.
- 57:57Oh. Yeah, I saw it too.
- 57:59I. Thought that was really neat.
- 58:02Yeah. The express images, the image
- 58:03that you see, it's again, it's the evidence you know, it's the
- 58:07evidence, the express, which is why you could see when you
- 58:11express something. Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 58:13Because it's like what Philip said, show us the Father.
- 58:16And Jesus said, have I been so long with you?
- 58:18And you don't know me, Philip, You know, like it was the
- 58:20evidence. It was the substance of who God
- 58:24was. You know, like if you've seen
- 58:26me, you've seen the Father. Yeah, he said.
- 58:29I and the Father are one. And that's what the Jews had
- 58:33such a problem with. Is Jesus making himself equal to
- 58:36God? But he he was evidence of God.
- 58:40So, so it's 8:00. But you see, So what is the
- 58:45evidence of the things not seen? Faith, faith.
- 58:51Faith is that expression, that express that expression.
- 58:56That's interesting. That's good stuff.
- 58:58I'm telling you, I love it. All right, I guess we'll quit.
- 59:02That is it for today. Thank you very much.
- 59:04Appreciate it as we conclude today's study, remember Hebrews
- 59:0911/1, which is exactly where we were are tonight.
- 59:11Faith is a substance of things hoped for the evidence of things
- 59:14not seen and actually I just like what we were saying.
- 59:17I really hope that we could go through this word and let it
- 59:21build your faith to the point that you can actually see these
- 59:24truths in your own life in your inner man that they could see
- 59:27these truths and be changed by it.
- 59:30That's that's that would be my my wish for everybody, of
- 59:33course, and then we can see those things.
- 59:35So anyway, join us next Monday again, we do the same thing 7:00
- 59:40same time. Be back here in Hebrews 11 in
- 59:44verse 2. So God bless you.
- 59:45Thank you very much for your time.
