- 0:36This is the Eat More Carbs podcast.
- 0:38We're Riley Beatty Sports Nutrition and we're a team of
- 0:40dietitians and we talk every Thursday about sports nutrition
- 0:43for the girlies. I'm Jenna and I'm the host of
- 0:45this podcast and. I'm Riley.
- 0:46I'm the founder of Riley Beatty Sports Nutrition.
- 0:48We like to call it around here our BSN.
- 0:50We're super excited to talk with y'all today.
- 0:52Before we get into today's episode, we are going to do our
- 0:54high and low. So sharing just a little bit
- 0:56about our week, the good, and the parts we wish had gone a
- 0:58little bit differently. Riley is always can you kick?
- 1:00Us off. I've been so excited to share
- 1:02the story with you. I don't know if it's a high or a
- 1:04low, so you're going to have to help me out.
- 1:07Just to give some background. What have we been talking about
- 1:09recently that like we are both not into at all.
- 1:13What is like a fall thing that you and I are just like, not
- 1:15into at all? Pumpkin spice, Yeah.
- 1:17Yes, pumpkin spice, right? And you and I have been very
- 1:21like outwardly kind of spoken about that.
- 1:23We just like don't love pumpkin spice.
- 1:25And I want to show you what one of my athletes sent me, OK?
- 1:29Is that a pumpkin spice goo? I know who this is from.
- 1:33I have been waiting to share this with you because this is so
- 1:38funny to me. Somebody sent me a gift for my
- 1:41birthday and in there she sent me a pumpkin spice gel because a
- 1:46little background is like, I'm not just, I'm not a gel person,
- 1:49especially Goo. And one of my clients thought
- 1:52she was going to troll me and she sent me a pumpkin spice gel.
- 1:55And I have been dying to share this with you, Jenna.
- 1:58Hats off to her. This is 1 are the best gag gifts
- 2:01I've ever thought of. Like that is such a thoughtful,
- 2:03funny gift. Yep, and she listens to Emer
- 2:05cars podcast a lot, so she knows that we like don't love a
- 2:09pumpkin spice. But I've been just been dying
- 2:11because I've been like waiting for your reaction.
- 2:13I don't think I can do this. I don't think I can.
- 2:15I was gonna ask like, are you going to try it?
- 2:17No, I don't know. I don't know.
- 2:19I just feel like I don't. I just don't know.
- 2:21I don't know if I can do it. That's fair.
- 2:22I don't know if I could do that. That's like.
- 2:25AI know, but I'm going to need ideas from you all because I
- 2:29have to get her back. I have to gag gift her back.
- 2:32So I need ideas from everybody else.
- 2:33But I just thought this was like so funny.
- 2:35I also think that you all out there who are my athletes, you
- 2:38all are getting too bold. You're getting too bold because
- 2:40you keep trying to round me up. The amount of people who are
- 2:43trolling me out on my like Monday and Wednesday stories.
- 2:45I was like not OK, like they keep being like, oh, she's
- 2:48spicy. Let's try to get her spicier.
- 2:50Like they are coming for me in my stories right now because
- 2:53they're just trying to like, make me mad.
- 2:55They're trying to love that. They're like, what do you think
- 2:57about the fruit diet? I'm like, OK guys, I was like,
- 3:00what do you think about keto? I'm like, you know what I think
- 3:02about keto? Like we talk about this all the
- 3:04time. Like they're just trying to roll
- 3:05me up so I'm coming for all of y'all.
- 3:07Too funny. So is that your high or your
- 3:09low? Because it could be both.
- 3:10I think it might be both. Like I just feel like it's such
- 3:13a funny and like thoughtful thing and also like it's a
- 3:16thoughtful gag gift, right? Like yes, she was like, how can
- 3:19I roll roll up as much as possible?
- 3:21And then she did it. Like I can just imagine her
- 3:23seeing that and being like, this is so perfect.
- 3:26But like, I think that is the high because like that is such a
- 3:29thoughtful thing, you know what I mean?
- 3:30Like even though it's not something that you like, like
- 3:32it's like the exact opposite, but it's still super thoughtful.
- 3:35So like. I know I told her I'm gonna keep
- 3:37it on my desk as a reminder to like never work with people from
- 3:40her area again, like just as a joke.
- 3:42But I was like, no, no, no, no, no.
- 3:44There's like a little also like back story too, because like
- 3:46intrafueling for her or something.
- 3:48That was really like, really, really scary.
- 3:50And so like, we have been kind of like sending videos back and
- 3:53forth like the last couple of months of us like fuelling
- 3:55during our, you know, our runs or our workouts.
- 3:57And so she's been doing like gel reviews and stuff like that.
- 4:00So she was like, it's your turn to do a gel review.
- 4:02And I was like, I hate you. I I'm like, curious about like
- 4:05how it tastes. Jenna like what if this is
- 4:07actually the gel for me that. Would be so funny.
- 4:09I mean, like I really have been enjoying Morton.
- 4:12Like I'm not going to eat Morton on a regular basis.
- 4:15Like I'm so excited to run for a couple of months with like out
- 4:17eating anything during a run. And I know that's weird for me
- 4:19saying that, but like I was just eating so much during my runs
- 4:22and I did so many Morton gels on long runs and stuff.
- 4:24But I'm wondering like, because these are two things that I like
- 4:27dislike so much. Like do they counteract that's?
- 4:30It's a good question. Like it's two things that you
- 4:31don't like. So does it, you know, like
- 4:33elementary school math? Do these people are positive?
- 4:35Yeah. OK, well, maybe I have to try
- 4:38it. Maybe we crack the code here.
- 4:39Oh my gosh, it's so funny. All right, if you do, you have
- 4:41to share with all of us. Like please put that on social
- 4:44media because I want to know. Yeah, maybe I'll do it right now
- 4:46because I'm sick and I don't have any flavor.
- 4:48Like I can't. Taste anything, so that's
- 4:50getting out of it. You can't add a variable.
- 4:52OK fine, I should have not told anybody and then be like I did
- 4:55it. No, because we're all going to
- 4:56ask for the full review. Maybe I'll do it for science,
- 4:59but. In the name of science, I think
- 5:01that's a good one. Yes.
- 5:03OK, So that's my high and my low.
- 5:04I did have backups ready to go, but I think that's the high and
- 5:07the low. I like it for me this week.
- 5:09How about you? OK, before I share my high, I
- 5:12just want to say like I work with the best people.
- 5:14I love the people that I get to work with.
- 5:15Like we work with the best people at RBSN.
- 5:18Like we're so fortunate and I am so thankful.
- 5:21Like we've talked about before, one of the hardest things is
- 5:23like when somebody gets their period back, they reach their
- 5:25goals, they leave the program. Like we don't talk to them
- 5:27anymore and we've developed relationships over, you know,
- 5:30several months. That makes it hard.
- 5:31But I do have people that will like continually update me on
- 5:34things that happen in their life, which I absolutely love
- 5:37because I love to celebrate like the winds outside of period
- 5:39recovery. Like life wins are really fun
- 5:41too. And I had somebody that emailed
- 5:43me to let me know that she got into her master's of Dietetic
- 5:46program for after she graduates, which was like a big goal of
- 5:50hers after she left period recovery after she got her
- 5:52period back was to focus on that academic goal.
- 5:55And I was just so excited for her.
- 5:57Like she sent me the screenshot of the e-mail of her acceptance,
- 6:01and I was like, Oh my gosh. So that was just such a fun
- 6:04thing to get to celebrate with her.
- 6:05And obviously, like, we love dietitians.
- 6:07We love more people entering the field.
- 6:09And I'm super, super excited for her.
- 6:11So great, like for multiple reasons.
- 6:13Do you remember how excited we were when we got into our
- 6:15program? Like that's how she's feeling
- 6:17right now and it's so cool that she shared it with you.
- 6:19Yes, absolutely. It's also cool because I think
- 6:21about like how that put me on the path to where I am right now
- 6:24because we met during our Dietetic internship.
- 6:26Like had no idea who you were, but I knew that we were matched
- 6:30together at the same hospital and look where we are now.
- 6:33So just the like idea of what she's about to start and like
- 6:36what that means for her is just really exciting and.
- 6:39For us, that was like almost eight years ago, or maybe it was
- 6:428 years ago. Let's not talk about it.
- 6:43Let's not talk about my age. OK, I'm older than you, so yeah,
- 6:47barely. I'm officially in the next
- 6:49Boston bracket, so I am old. Not allowed to say that, Milo.
- 6:53I shared on the podcast like probably well over a year plus
- 6:56ago about how I purchased this perfume off of like a
- 6:59recommendation condition from an influencer, which is very bold
- 7:02because you can't smell perfume. And it worked out in my favor.
- 7:05So I've tried that again. And I always buy like the travel
- 7:08size of perfume because like in the event that it doesn't smell
- 7:11great, I don't have a giant bottle of it.
- 7:13I also purchased the travel size so that way I can travel with it
- 7:17because like I don't want that big bottle of something that I
- 7:19can't haul with me because of course I'm not checking a bag
- 7:21because that takes way too long. Heck no, I'm gonna fit it all in
- 7:24my carry on. That's the kind of person I am.
- 7:26Do not find me a baggage claim. I will not be waiting that long
- 7:28anyway. I have 2 bottles of what I would
- 7:31consider like not the least expensive perfumes on the
- 7:34market. I love them both.
- 7:35They're both my travel size. They're both glass containers.
- 7:38I picked one up the other day to use it and I don't know what
- 7:41happened in my brain, but I just dropped it and it shattered and
- 7:44it went everywhere, which meant that like the room smelled nice.
- 7:48But then I had to like get all the glass picked up and I lost
- 7:51all of it. Like it all went everywhere And
- 7:53then I was like, well that's a huge bummer.
- 7:54So I was like of course I was still on a small good.
- 7:56So I pick up my other one. My other expensive 1 is.
- 7:59He thought you were. We're gonna say you were on the
- 8:01ground. And I tried to put it on like
- 8:04sweeping packet. I was like, I know that she's
- 8:07resourceful over there, but she was not on the ground.
- 8:11No. Can you imagine?
- 8:13No. There was way too much broken
- 8:14glass that was so dangerous. Nolan, like, walks in with
- 8:18George. I saw on the ground he's like
- 8:20rolling around. He's like, what are you 2?
- 8:22OK, Like, no one else is gonna find that as funny as I do.
- 8:25But like, I'm sorry. That was just, I don't know.
- 8:27I thought you were going and I couldn't get out of there.
- 8:29I'm so sorry interrupted you. OK, no, that's fine.
- 8:32I still wanted to smell good. I did not roll around in the
- 8:34broken bottle of perfume. So I pull out my other travel
- 8:37size 1 of like my favorite expensive perfume and it's
- 8:40empty. This particular perfume, they're
- 8:43smart instead of giving me just a glass bottle because I guess
- 8:46I'm clumsy and I break things Sometimes it comes in like a
- 8:49little leather pouch to keep the glass from breaking.
- 8:52But because of that, I didn't know that the bottle was open
- 8:55and leaking. It leaked into like the inside
- 8:57of the little case. And so both of my perfumes are
- 9:00gone, just completely ran through in a single day.
- 9:03That's also. A very fancy one if it has a
- 9:05container for the container. I know it's nice but again,
- 9:09that's why I buy the travel one because girl math I'm like oh if
- 9:11I only buy the travel one it's X amount of dollars instead of
- 9:14like double X amount of dollars for the big container even
- 9:16though it would probably last double the amount of time I
- 9:19like. Our travel container perfume too
- 9:20though, so I think like I like to get maybe like multiple
- 9:23different ones and then you can do that.
- 9:25Exactly. See, it all makes sense, but it
- 9:28doesn't when you break the bottles and they accidentally
- 9:30leak everywhere. And it probably happened like
- 9:32the last time that I travelled with it.
- 9:34I guess I just stink now. You and your natural deodorant,
- 9:36and now you don't have any. Perfume.
- 9:38No perfume. Yeah.
- 9:39Which I did actually have people message me about, like what
- 9:42deodorants they use. And I shout out to all of you
- 9:45who gave me input on that. So thank you.
- 9:47I was actually thinking about you because I bought new
- 9:49deodorant the other day and I was like.
- 9:51Did you accidentally buy a test? I told you after pregnancy I
- 9:54can't even look at them and I know it's not good for me and
- 9:56people can come for me, but I just it's my vice.
- 9:58You know what? Good smelling deodorant.
- 10:00It's my advice. I don't really drink, I don't do
- 10:02a lot of other things. So you know what, you got to
- 10:04pick your battles. Everything in moderation, right?
- 10:06Yep. OK, on today's episode, we're
- 10:08actually talking about the things that drive us bananas.
- 10:11Outside of accidentally dropping our expensive perfume models and
- 10:14pumpkin spice goo, we were talking about nutrition related
- 10:17things that we saw this week or online that absolutely drove us
- 10:21bananas. I'm so excited to share mine.
- 10:23I have some from clients this week and I'm pumped.
- 10:26Oh, OK, I'm ready. I'm excited.
- 10:28They're trolling me, but then and they're also bringing me
- 10:30what drives me bananas. So thank you everybody for just
- 10:33continuing to bring me content so we can tell of it.
- 10:36On the podcast you guys, I want to petition to change the name
- 10:40of this podcast or not this podcast, but like this type of
- 10:43episode from what drives us bananas to like what's not
- 10:45driving me bananas because the list of things driving me
- 10:48bananas is increasing. We only have.
- 10:51Things that drive us bananas, apparently.
- 10:53Now nothing's good anymore. Right.
- 10:55Am I like just being negative Nancy or like is there a lot out
- 10:58there? I don't know, we always talk
- 11:00about this, but it's so easy to keep like such a positive
- 11:04mindset with like fueling and nutrition on our side of the
- 11:07Internet because we talk about it in such a positive light.
- 11:10But then I think sometimes when I just like go out there and I'm
- 11:13just, I'm so shocked by what other people are seeing.
- 11:16Like I just, I feel like I'm just so shocked by what
- 11:19everybody's saying out there. Maybe I agree with you.
- 11:21Maybe we need to change this to what's not driving us bananas.
- 11:24Right and share something positive, but it would be like
- 11:26this post from RBSN does not drive me bananas.
- 11:30If we're thinking about what's what's online, what drove me
- 11:33banana is actually something that I saw in person.
- 11:35It's December. I love Christmas time.
- 11:37Like give me all the holiday things, set up the Christmas
- 11:40tree as early as possible. But I feel like every year
- 11:43things keep being like moved earlier and earlier.
- 11:46Like we started Black Friday shopping in September and
- 11:49Christmas decorations were out in October.
- 11:52All that sort of stuff of was just like brushing us through to
- 11:54the next chapter of life. And I was at the gym the other
- 11:57day. This is early December and it
- 11:58was like start your 2020 26 shred early.
- 12:01I have a lot of thoughts, but I want to hear what you guys have
- 12:03to say about that. We're speechless, everything.
- 12:07I feel like every year I have hope that it's going to be
- 12:09better, and every year it's not, it's worse.
- 12:12It is. It's fine to have goals around
- 12:15body comp changes. Just want to put that out there.
- 12:17But the shaming around it or trying to convince you that you
- 12:20should not enjoy your holiday or that you need to start something
- 12:24immediately. But I just was like kind of
- 12:26upset because I was like, why? Why are we pushing this?
- 12:28Like what? What?
- 12:30It's a gym and they want people to sign up for their programs
- 12:32and whatnot, but she's gonna rub me the wrong way.
- 12:34I think what I don't like about it is like you're already
- 12:37telling people that they're going to fail, right?
- 12:39Like you're like, oh, you are going to be bad and air quotes
- 12:42this holiday season. So like you should just prepare
- 12:45for it. And it's like OK, food isn't
- 12:47good or bad. The holidays aren't good or bad.
- 12:49Like why are we guilt tripping people?
- 12:50Here, and even if you are working towards some type of
- 12:52body comp goal, enjoying some of the holiday foods probably isn't
- 12:56going to make that big of an impact on your goal. 100%.
- 13:00We have to make small sustainable changes to get you
- 13:02where you want to be for your goal.
- 13:03So trying to be like be drastic in the month of December.
- 13:06It's only going to get worse though, because I keep thinking
- 13:08I'm like, it's 2025, like why are we still having this
- 13:10conversation? But I do think it's going to get
- 13:12worse, especially with people abusing, I would say a lot of
- 13:15the weight loss medications and just there's such a
- 13:20standardization or maybe normalization of fast and large
- 13:23weight loss. And that's what I just feel like
- 13:25we're going to see a lot of that going into the new year.
- 13:27It's just so much hyper fixation on someone's body and I think
- 13:31that's what bothers me. Yes, especially because the
- 13:34majority of the GOP 1 users are women.
- 13:36Right. Yeah, and.
- 13:37You just cannot win. Nope.
- 13:39Nope, you can't. There's always going to be
- 13:40someone that's upset about how you did something, the way that
- 13:43you look, the way that you dress, or all of those things
- 13:46like you just can't win. And what if, hear me out, we
- 13:49were more concerned about our character than we were about our
- 13:52appearance? You can't sell character, that's
- 13:55why. I know, but isn't that crazy?
- 13:58I know, it's honestly so sad. Anyway, I hope everybody just
- 14:01has a wonderful December and doesn't feel any of the pressure
- 14:04from like gyms or marketing campaigns or influencers or
- 14:07anything like that to do anything other than enjoy your
- 14:10holiday season the way that you want to.
- 14:12Just wait until you hear what my what drives us bananas because I
- 14:15swear y'all we do not talk about these before we record.
- 14:19Just wait until you see what mine is.
- 14:21OK, what is it? OK, it is an Instagram post that
- 14:24a client sent me. So I've said this before, but we
- 14:27obviously we love our clients so much and a lot of them listen to
- 14:30the podcast. And so a lot of them have been
- 14:32sending me what drives them bananas.
- 14:35And they're like, can you do it on the podcast?
- 14:37And I'm like, OK, so this is a client, I guess.
- 14:39So what drives us bananas? Like proxy from a client?
- 14:42I'm going to set the scene here. A Instagram Reel by a gentleman
- 14:46who is weightlifting at the gym, no shirt.
- 14:48And it says 10 weird signs your body is actually shredding fat.
- 14:54This post has 74,000 likes, almost 2000 comments.
- 15:00We're going to go through the ten ways that you know your body
- 15:04is shedding fat. Are we ready for this?
- 15:06I mean, no, but let's hear them. OK, number one, you start peeing
- 15:12more than usual. Like your body's literally
- 15:15flushing out the old version of you.
- 15:18Do we think this is a sign that you're shedding fat?
- 15:24Done raising my hand. Have you ever been in a
- 15:26situation in which you're very thirsty and you drink all of
- 15:29your water at once instead of sipping on it throughout the
- 15:32day? What then happens?
- 15:34I also want to set the scene that there's almost 2000
- 15:37comments on this post and most people are saying I have these
- 15:41symptoms, it's happening to me. I want to set the scene also on
- 15:45that piece, right? All right, it gets it gets
- 15:47better. I can't believe that was the
- 15:48first one. That's the first one.
- 15:50Number two, you feel colder, especially in your hands and
- 15:53feet. Not because something is wrong,
- 15:55but because your insulation's finally leaving.
- 15:58Maybe we have. Insulation for a reason.
- 16:00Also, what is one of the number one symptoms that our athletes
- 16:03have in low energy availability? Being cold all the time and
- 16:08especially in places when you shouldn't be.
- 16:10I'm calling someone out specifically.
- 16:12She knows who she is. But if you are wearing a jacket
- 16:14to walk to class and you live in Texas?
- 16:16It's not Lily. It's not Lily, not Lily who does
- 16:21happen to live in Texas, but. It's not her.
- 16:24And the sad thing is, again, there are people who are in the
- 16:28comments saying be like, that's why I've started feeling colder
- 16:31lately because it's working #3 your sweat smells different.
- 16:35Not bad, just different because that's your body actually
- 16:38burning fat for fuel. Interesting.
- 16:41I think what he's trying to say here is that you're starting to
- 16:43burn ketones, right? So you have a distinct smell,
- 16:46but if you're burning ketones because you're in that much of a
- 16:49deficit. We got a problem.
- 16:51Smelling like nail Polish remover is not normal.
- 16:54You're here to hear it first, folks.
- 16:56That's not normal #4 you get random energy burst one minute,
- 17:02you're chill the next. Then you have enough energy so
- 17:05you feel like you're cleaning your whole apartment.
- 17:07This means that your metabolism is waking up.
- 17:10My eye is twitching. We've got.
- 17:12Six more to go, people. I don't know if I can do this,
- 17:14but if you're experiencing extreme lags of like prolonged
- 17:17fatigue, like that's a sign of underfueling, that's not a good
- 17:20thing. That's not something we should
- 17:21be excited about. Well, that's my whole thing is
- 17:24like somebody who is underfueling is seeing this post
- 17:28and that was being validated because they think what they're
- 17:30doing is right because someone said what they're doing is
- 17:33right. And then again, we have 2000
- 17:35comments on this of people saying this is happening to me.
- 17:38I just. Put this out there for a zoom
- 17:40outlook at this is like when you are under fueling.
- 17:44That doesn't mean that like you are exclusively losing fat.
- 17:47That doesn't just exclusively happen when you're under
- 17:50fueling. Like there are other things that
- 17:52are happening to it like we can lose muscle mass, we can lose
- 17:55performance, we can shut down non essential functions like
- 17:58reproduction. You can't just be like, oh, I'm
- 18:00going to under fuel. These signs mean that I'm just
- 18:03losing fat. #5 your face leans out first, your jawline starts
- 18:08showing, your cheekbones, your cheekbones pop and you're like,
- 18:11when did that happen? It's also where we feel for
- 18:14malnutrition, but that's OK. Number six, I'm messed up on my
- 18:18screenshot, but it's something about your clothes start fitting
- 18:21tighter in some areas and looser in some other areas.
- 18:24That one's weird. I don't know.
- 18:26That's number six. Number seven, you start sleeping
- 18:30like a baby, your hormones finally chill out and your
- 18:32body's repairing itself. For real?
- 18:35OK, I have a bone to pick with anybody who says you slept like
- 18:37a baby, because babies don't sleep good.
- 18:40Take it from someone who has a 2 year old.
- 18:42Right. I was like, I don't have a
- 18:43child, but I sometimes I get on morning calls with Riley and
- 18:46she's like, Charlie didn't sleep at all last night.
- 18:48So like, is he saying that you're waking up all through the
- 18:50night because another sign of underfuelling?
- 18:52I don't believe like I sometimes I'm like trying to understand,
- 18:55like I'm like, OK, where is this man coming from?
- 18:58I don't get this one at all. Like there's no way that you can
- 19:01start sleeping better if you're underfuelled like that.
- 19:03I don't get that one at all. Maybe you're sleeping longer
- 19:06because you physically can't get out of bed because you have no
- 19:08energy. Oh, OK, Yeah, there we go.
- 19:11There we go, there we go #8 you catch mood swings earlier on,
- 19:15then suddenly you just feel better.
- 19:18Fat loss balances way more than your weight.
- 19:20I also don't know what he's trying to say here, but yeah.
- 19:23I'm a little confused on that one.
- 19:25I mean, everybody sure gets a little bit hangry from time to
- 19:28time, but like, what's he saying?
- 19:29I think he's trying. To say that you don't have as
- 19:31many hormonal mood swings, which you're not going to have
- 19:33hormonal mood swings if you don't have hormones because
- 19:36you're under fueling. I mean, that's something that we
- 19:37talk about like every single day.
- 19:39I feel like with the period recovery program when people are
- 19:41having a bad body image where like your period is going in two
- 19:44days and it usually does. That's so true.
- 19:47That is such like a such a big sign is when they're like, I'm
- 19:49Moody, I'm not feeling good. And then it's like a couple days
- 19:52later they're like, oh. That's why #9 is you notice new
- 19:55veins or shape in the mirror, which I think that if you're
- 19:58losing fat, you're probably going to have more definition,
- 20:01but that doesn't mean it's a good thing.
- 20:03And #10. My favorite?
- 20:05Your appetite gets weird. Some days you're starving, other
- 20:08days food doesn't even cross your mind.
- 20:10That's your hunger hormones resetting.
- 20:11OK, no, your hunger hormones are not resetting.
- 20:14That's not how that works. You're suppressing, but not
- 20:17resetting. They're suppressing because
- 20:19you're not listening to them. Your body is adapting to the
- 20:22fact that you aren't fueling or attempting.
- 20:24Down regulating itself, it's going into starvation mode.
- 20:28Correct. Oh, what a bummer.
- 20:30I know, absolutely drove me bananas again. 74,000 people and
- 20:34he is selling his shredding fat guide or something like that.
- 20:37We hate to see it at RBSN. I do want to say something
- 20:40there, though. All of his things were like
- 20:42related to aesthetics. There was nothing in that list
- 20:45of like, your performance is getting better and you're
- 20:47getting healthier as a person. It was all you're shredding fat
- 20:50so you can look a certain way. Right.
- 20:52There was nothing about you're getting stronger, you're getting
- 20:53faster. This is a bummer of an episode,
- 20:55guys. We're like all down in the dumps
- 20:57because there's just so much cheating against out there.
- 20:59All right, Lily, cheer us up. OK, so my, what drives me
- 21:03bananas kind of goes off of Jenna's with the New Year thing,
- 21:06but I also just think it's a year round thing where it feels
- 21:10like on social media, perfectionism is the only
- 21:12answer. And especially around the New
- 21:15Year's. Like, the reason that so many
- 21:20New Year's resolutions fail is because, one, they were
- 21:22unsustainable to begin with, and two, if people don't do every
- 21:26single thing that they said they're going to do, they
- 21:28automatically give up because they don't feel like they're
- 21:31doing it right. Oh, the all or nothing mindset.
- 21:33100 percent, and I think that there has to be some grace given
- 21:37to people because you aren't going to be perfect or you need
- 21:41to make a goal that you can be perfect at, which isn't 100%.
- 21:44Of the time, smart and sustainable goals that include
- 21:47room for life and being human, yes.
- 21:50And even when it's something that you think you can do every
- 21:53day, you probably won't do it every single day.
- 21:55That's such an unrealistic expectation to set for doing
- 21:59something like, you know, perfectly.
- 22:01Like if you did 6 out of seven for drinking more water, that is
- 22:04still amazing, still good. Why do you think it is that we,
- 22:06like, glamorize these goals? Because I just think about like
- 22:09myself, right? Like every single year I'm like,
- 22:11I'm going to do more yoga. And I never do more yoga, but I
- 22:15don't ever want to set. I never like think about like, I
- 22:18want to do yoga once a week. I'm like, that's not good
- 22:20enough. But like, I'm like, OK, I need
- 22:21to do yoga three times a week. And it's like, Riley, you
- 22:23haven't done yoga three times in 2025.
- 22:25Like, why are you doing it three times a week?
- 22:26But like, why do we feel like you can't set a realistic goal?
- 22:29I think that happens for a lot of people because they feel like
- 22:32if they set smaller goals that are more sustainable that
- 22:35they've failed because it doesn't feel like they've
- 22:38reached the end goal. Like if you're picturing or your
- 22:41idea of more yoga in 2026 is 3 times a week and you set the
- 22:45goal of I'm going to do yoga once a month, which is still an
- 22:48increase from what it was. It still feels like a failure
- 22:51because you're like, I'm only doing it once a month.
- 22:54And like what I would like to be doing is 3 times a week.
- 22:57And in reality, what we should be doing is like, OK, I'm going
- 22:59to make this change. I'm going to make this increase
- 23:01of doing yoga one time per month.
- 23:03And then maybe next year you're like 2 * a month and then the
- 23:05next year you're like 3 * a month because that's hard to
- 23:08work into your schedule as a working mom.
- 23:10You run a business and we can't be happy with the in between of
- 23:14reaching a goal in a slower amount of time. 100% and I also
- 23:17think that we have people online like influencers where their job
- 23:21is to work out seven days a week and promote that and tell you
- 23:25you're lazy if you. Don't.
- 23:26Which is interesting because what their job truly is, is to
- 23:29keep you on the app for as long as possible.
- 23:31They like sell their fat burning guide or their.
- 23:34Special supplement. Crazy world.
- 23:36I also think too that like we've been talking a lot about the new
- 23:38year, but like we are not against like New Year's
- 23:41resolutions or New Year's goals. I think we're just against, you
- 23:43know, having things that are not realistic and not sustainable.
- 23:46And that's obviously something that we talk about all the time
- 23:48in the period recovery program is like we're trying to set like
- 23:50realistic and sustainable goals and like joke about the yoga
- 23:53thing, but like that's not really a sustainable goal.
- 23:55And I think sometimes like the sustainable goals and like the
- 23:57sustainable and realistic work, like isn't glamorous, right?
- 24:00Like it's so much easier for me to like pop on social and be
- 24:03like, I do yoga every single just kind of like what Lily was
- 24:05mentioning, but it's like not as glamorous to be like I do yoga
- 24:08once a month. Like that's people are like, OK,
- 24:10great, good job. But like you mentioned, Jenna,
- 24:12right, like setting a goal for once a month, I'm gonna do yoga
- 24:1512 times. If I hit that goal in 2026
- 24:18versus the two times I did in 2025, that's not as glamorous.
- 24:21And like a lot of the stuff that we're talking about oftentimes
- 24:24with period recovery and just with proper sportion nutrition
- 24:26is not glamorous. It's like almost the brag of
- 24:28like getting something perfect. I feel like.
- 24:30I also feel like this is a good thing to talk about from like
- 24:33the period recovery standpoint, because the period recovery
- 24:36process shouldn't be that we make like these huge drastic
- 24:39changes of stopping exercise, completely increasing total
- 24:43intake and doing that for two months and then seeing a period
- 24:46and then immediately starting up with previous habits.
- 24:49Again. Like we should make small
- 24:50sustainable changes like the ones that Briley mentioned for
- 24:53like, oh, we're doing this at one point in our day.
- 24:56We're increasing this, this meal, we're adding a snack here.
- 25:00We're making sure we're fueling at this point in time on
- 25:02Thursdays, like things like that, that we build on so that
- 25:05way we learn sustainable habits versus doing something that's
- 25:07like jumping in and not realizing that like none of that
- 25:10is sustainable. I think kind of going back to
- 25:12like Lily's point about like the glamorization of things or
- 25:15things aren't glamorous because things aren't like catchy or
- 25:17silly or like impressive. And I feel like a lot of the
- 25:20time, like, especially on social, like we're hearing about
- 25:22the outliers. We're hearing about the person
- 25:25that ran a marathon for the first time, just speaking about
- 25:28like the running community and they qualified for Boston or
- 25:31they ran a three hour marathon and they had never run a
- 25:33marathon before. And like that's an outlier.
- 25:35Like most people who run a marathon, like especially their
- 25:38first one, like aren't going to be close to those numbers.
- 25:40And if they unless they've had previous running experience or
- 25:43things like that. And a lot of the time we're
- 25:45constantly comparing ourselves to like other people's highlight
- 25:47reels or like the stories that go viral when like those again,
- 25:50are very small outliers in the space.
- 25:53Yeah, it's the 1% of the 1% of what we're seeing on social
- 25:56media. It's not an accurate
- 25:57representation of like everyone around you.
- 26:00It's just like the highlight reel but did go super viral and
- 26:04there's a reason why it went super viral.
- 26:06I just need to stay off of social media I guess.
- 26:09Oh, me too. There's so many negatives, but
- 26:11there are a lot of benefits of it too.
- 26:12And I think that's where like the struggle is, is it's like
- 26:14too much of anything as a bad thing.
- 26:16And then also, I think you just again have to go back to like
- 26:19understanding that it's somebody's highlight reel or
- 26:21then also filtering the information that you're seeing
- 26:23on your page. So maybe this is a good
- 26:25reminder, but everyone should do a quick social media cleanup.
- 26:28And we talk a lot about doing this like every so often, but
- 26:31like turning off even like the suggested posts you can and
- 26:34snooze those for 30 days, which does mean that you have to go in
- 26:37and continuously do that. Unfollowing accounts that don't
- 26:40provide value or encouragement to your life and maybe following
- 26:44a few more that do. And if you have a goal that's
- 26:46specific around like mindset following people who work on
- 26:49mindset related goals versus someone who's continuously
- 26:52showing off like their ABS at the beginning of what I eat in a
- 26:55day videos. What I eat in a day videos to
- 26:58be. Continued.
- 26:59Yeah, whole other topic. Do you guys have anything that
- 27:02you want to share for the beginning of December for maybe
- 27:06like encouragement? You're never going to keep your
- 27:08period by turning your life upside down.
- 27:10This always hashtag. That's her tagline.
- 27:11Yep. Thank you all so much for tuning
- 27:13in to this episode about what drives us bananas.
- 27:16In the comments, let us know what you've seen this week that
- 27:19drove you bananas because we want to know.
- 27:21We are going to do our training update.
- 27:23Riley and I are both in our running era, so we're sharing
- 27:25the training that we're doing currently for upcoming races and
- 27:28upcoming events. Riley, what is training like for
- 27:30you this week? This week I, I am kind of just
- 27:32like moving out of my recovery block.
- 27:36I have a 5K that I'm doing this weekend.
- 27:37I'm excited about just like a little local kind of race.
- 27:40I'm, I think I've shared this before, but I'm really just
- 27:42practicing on like racing right now and just trying to get my
- 27:44mileage up. Something that I really
- 27:46struggled with when I was training for the marathon was
- 27:49how many days I was running. I can only really run like four
- 27:52days a week. Once I went up to five, I
- 27:54started to get some like little pains and things like that.
- 27:56And so I'm really trying to work on like increasing my days of
- 28:00running right now. So that's what I'm doing right
- 28:02now in preparation for some like spring races and stuff, but then
- 28:05just doing some local stuff too. It's pretty boring of me right
- 28:09now. But like we talk about this all
- 28:10the time with like fueling, like the boring stuff works.
- 28:12So that's what I'm doing right now.
- 28:14I love it. There's nothing wrong with the
- 28:16boring stuff. And it's nice to just like run
- 28:18again because like when you're training for something and I was
- 28:21like training for the marathon, like everything had like our
- 28:23training purpose where it was like, OK, this is an easy run.
- 28:26This is a workout, this is a long run.
- 28:27And now I'm just like running. Yeah, just for enjoyment, yes.
- 28:30Karis told me it was frolicking and I really resonate with that.
- 28:34So that's what I'm doing. Catch me frolicking on the
- 28:36Greenway. That's me, sure.
- 28:37It's been the best part about like, coming back to running
- 28:39after the marathon. Nothing, I don't know, I think
- 28:43it's just like a different type of running, kind of like what I
- 28:45just shared where like I am really trying to like not look
- 28:48at my watch. So I think that's what I've
- 28:50done. I've done some runs with like
- 28:51Char and stuff like I've pushed her and I don't wear my watch
- 28:54for those. So kind of just like really
- 28:55getting back to like again, like running for fun and not putting
- 28:58as much pressure on it. I think especially when we're
- 29:01training for something, you just get so caught up in like
- 29:04numbers. I think something that I was so
- 29:05worried about for New York because I had been training for
- 29:08it for so long. It was such a big race was
- 29:10getting hurt and I was so worried about like not being
- 29:13able to get to the start line of New York.
- 29:15And then now I feel like I have a little bit more freedom.
- 29:18Not like I'm going like crazy and want to get hurt or doing
- 29:21anything like that, but I feel like I can run now and be a
- 29:25little bit more like I just, it's a little bit more freeing,
- 29:28right? Like because when I was
- 29:29training, if I felt a pain, I'd be like, is my load too high?
- 29:32Is my pace too fast? Is like this going on?
- 29:35And then now I can just kind of like run I guess, if that makes
- 29:38sense. Yeah, I get you.
- 29:40I think that's great. What about you?
- 29:42It's like really good running weather right now in Arizona.
- 29:44Yeah. So is there like season that I
- 29:46running outside is my preference and enjoying being outside?
- 29:50I think, gosh, the grass is always greener on the other
- 29:53side. Like when I lived in Cleveland,
- 29:54I was like, the winters are so long and horrible.
- 29:56And then now that I live here, I'm like, gosh, I miss the
- 29:58season. So like, you know, things like
- 30:00that, this, I'm just like enjoying this and being thankful
- 30:02for the opportunity to run outside.
- 30:05I have not signed up for the local half yet, but I probably
- 30:08will. I don't know why I'm like kind
- 30:10of hesitant to do that. I think it's probably my
- 30:12hamstring in the back of my mind and I don't want to put like too
- 30:14much pressure on my body. I will say that like a couple of
- 30:17weeks ago, I actually had the first like, running workout I've
- 30:20had in a while that like, I felt good and I like, finally reached
- 30:23some paces that I was like, OK, like it doesn't mean that I'm
- 30:27going to be, you know, running zone 2 for the rest of my life.
- 30:30Like I can still like have days where I feel good and can push
- 30:33pace. I just think I just have to take
- 30:35advantage of those and be smart about them.
- 30:37I make sure that I'm not like overdoing it and really listen
- 30:39to like if the day after I run like my hamstring feels spicy,
- 30:42like I take another, another recovery day.
- 30:44And I think having that like flexibility with knowing that
- 30:46like if I take another day off or I have another recovery day
- 30:49during the week, like that doesn't destroy my training, my
- 30:52progress or anything like that. Like is it exactly what I wanted
- 30:54to do? No.
- 30:55Is it what my body needed? Yes.
- 30:57And that's OK. Isn't it so crazy that like,
- 30:59it's so easy to like, not listen to our body because like our
- 31:02body's telling us like, hey, we need a recovery day and you're
- 31:04like, hey, body, you're like lying to me.
- 31:06Like I don't need another recovery day.
- 31:08Like I can push through when like in actuality, your body's
- 31:10trying to tell you something. Right, Like there's a pain there
- 31:13for, for a reason and I shouldn't be like, OK, well I'll
- 31:15just cross train then like no problem, I'll just do something
- 31:18else instead. Like no, like that is feedback
- 31:20from our body telling us don't do something today.
- 31:23And I think that's been working really well.
- 31:25And like, yeah it is a little frustrating, but I'd much rather
- 31:27do this in a smart way than like re injure myself to the point
- 31:30where I need to like completely stop running again.
- 31:32I'm so happy. I know that it's not 110%, but
- 31:36I'm so happy that your hamstring is feeling better.
- 31:37Me too, if you do have questions for Riley and I about what
- 31:41drives this bananas. Period recovery, nutrition,
