  [SPEAKER_00]: According to Ian Rappaport of NFL Network, the Jaguars have signed, thirty-one-year-old defensive tackle, Austin Johnson.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to talk about, dive into what Austin Johnson brings to the Jacksonville Jaguars, how the Jaguars defensive tackle position is shaping up right now.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So Austin Johnson, thirty-one years old, comes over from the Buffalo Bill spent one season there after spending two seasons with the Chargers before that spent two seasons with the Giants.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Before that, he was drafted by the Titans in two thousand sixteen, played out his rookie contract there.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Again, defensive tackle listed at six foot four three hundred and fourteen pounds comes from the Penn State Netany Lions again back in two thousand sixteen.

  [SPEAKER_00]: some serious, seriously impressive athletes.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't put Austin Johnson in the category of some of the other guys that they have put out, but you know, six, four, three, and fourteen pounds is a very big man and was a second round pick by the Titans back in,

  [SPEAKER_00]: So when the Jack Wars brings someone in, he has to be a culture fit.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He has to be intangibly rich as James Lads don't like to say.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He has to, you know, enhance their ecosystem by being nothing more than himself.

  [SPEAKER_00]: But I do think Austin Johnson brings a good attitude.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think that based on the interviews I've seen, based on what I've heard about him, and then based on the way he plays, I did go back and look at some of his twenty twenty four film with the Buffalo Bills.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Was not a full-time starter.

  [SPEAKER_00]: or starter really at all.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he did play some, I would say starter level snaps throughout different games in the twenty twenty four season against the Miami Dolphins in week two.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He played thirty eight snaps.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He played twenty nine snaps against the Jaguar last year against the Patriots in week eighteen played forty three snaps.

  [SPEAKER_00]: But usually he was in the teens to the twenty slow twenties for the bills and he was in there.

  [SPEAKER_00]: almost fifty fifty run defense and pass rush so somebody who can play on pretty much any down he has that versatility I think he's a better run defender he's also someone who throughout his career has played a lot more in the big app more of like a three-tech type of

  [SPEAKER_00]: positional alignment, then your traditional nose tackle.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think I'm taking on double teams all day, although he can do that.

  [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to dive into what I saw from his tape in Buffalo right now.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So to me, I saw someone who isn't overly explosive getting off the ball, you think of a traditional three-tech and you think of somebody who is used to penetrate.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Now even though Austin Johnson lines up a lot of times like in a similar spot, he is honestly utilized more as a role player.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Somebody who can eat up blocks, somebody who can take on pullers who can

  [SPEAKER_00]: worked down the line of scrimmage, hold the point of attack instead of penetrating.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He does have good hands.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think in the past roast department, his best trait is the use of his hands.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And he has several past roast moves.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't say, by any stretch, is he a high level past rush or just because I don't think he has the real juice to be that type of player necessarily at this point in his career.

  [SPEAKER_00]: But I think he's very assignment sound, very strong, and again someone who can defend the run to me at a high level.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So he brings a willingness to defend the run, he brings a willingness to execute assignments, to do his job.

  [SPEAKER_00]: There's been times where you haven't seen that a lot in Jacksonville, just defenders being able to execute their assignment on a given play, make sure that they're doing what they need to do to help the entire unit work as one.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think Austin Johnson is one of those types of players that does that.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Similar to DeWanSmoot, who does bring a little bit more pass for us to use.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Then Austin Johnson, but these two guys played together last year.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Matt Edwards, the Jaguar's defensive line coach, was with them in Buffalo last year.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So that's a connection point, a tether point between bringing in Austin Johnson and the Jaguar's current roster.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And then you also have, why is this move happening right now?

  [SPEAKER_00]: Defensive tackle.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Eric Armstead is injured.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Mason Smith is still on the active slash PUP.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know the extent of Eric Armstrong's back injury.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know when Mason Smith will be back.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how to speculate on when he'll be back.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He moves out around out there like he's looking pretty good, but I'm not a doctor and I'm not allowed to really give my opinion on that.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know when Mason Smith will be back.

  [SPEAKER_00]: What I do know is Austin Johnson comes in here.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And when I look at who's actually playing defensive tackle for the Jaguars right now, Devon Hamilton, Jordan Jefferson, Tyler Lacy, some of the other young guys, I think Austin Johnson right now would probably be the Jaguars second best defensive tackle.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Like I think that if they had to play a meaningful game,

  [SPEAKER_00]: tomorrow.

  [SPEAKER_00]: It might be Devon Hamilton and Austin Johnson out there.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Now, he needs to get adjusted to the system.

  [SPEAKER_00]: That's just from a talent and experience standpoint.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And just execution standpoint.

  [SPEAKER_00]: But obviously, he needs to be able to get into this playbook a little bit defensive tackle isn't the most complicated position in the world when it comes to the playbook generally speaking.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So, and he's got a wealth of experience in multiple different systems.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So, he should be in a position where he's pretty much ready to go, at least that would be my hope.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So right now, again, without Eric Armstrong said, without Mason Smith, I think he's your second or third defensive tackle.

  [SPEAKER_00]: But I think assuming Eric Armstrong's dead in Mason Smith are back before the regular season, which I think is a fair assumption right now.

  [SPEAKER_00]: you would probably slot him in as your fourth or fifth defensive tackle.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Someone who should make this team because again, I think in certain games, in certain games, certain games, scripts, certain matchups, you're gonna have times where you just need someone who is going to do their job, who is going to execute the assignment, especially in the run game, especially when you have a defensive front that maybe you're doing some different funky things, stunting, looping,

  [SPEAKER_00]: Trying to create one-on-ones for others, he can help you do that.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He can help you get your top guys free.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's not going to be a splash playmaker, but he's going to hold the point of attack.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Like you look at the numbers throughout his career.

  [SPEAKER_00]: It's nothing eye-popping.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Like he has nine total sacks in his career.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He has seven, seven total pressures last year on a hundred, six, eight past restaurants.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He had eight pressures for the bills.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Again, nothing crazy, although he did pick up two interceptions last year, which is remarkable.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Only interceptions of his career.

  [SPEAKER_00]: That's one of those unbelievable flukes for a

  [SPEAKER_00]: Defensive Tackle, who is on the field for a hundred and sixty-eight past-rush snaps to have two interceptions is absolutely wild, and you know, good for him.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure he had a lot of fun picking off a couple passes last year, but Austin Johnson, thirty-one years old, to me, brings a smart, heavy, strong defensive tackle, experienced guy to come into this room and provide eventually hopefully some depth, but right now, just starting experience a guy who can execute for you.

  [SPEAKER_00]: If he's your fourth or fifth defensive tackle in the rotation, that can really raise the floor.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I do think he has a floor raising type of guy.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I don't necessarily know if he's going to raise your ceiling as compared to some of the other players that are currently on the roster, but when you don't have Eric Armstrong studying, you don't have Mason Smith.
