- 0:22Speaker 1: He joins us on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest line,
- 0:26Speaker 1: Mike D you told us a couple of months ago
- 0:30Speaker 1: that Sam Levitt was AOK and gonna be fine, and
- 0:34Speaker 1: he is. And of course Kippen has recently said again
- 0:37Speaker 1: that he has been cleared. Uh, but with him not
- 0:40Speaker 1: being able to go through although he's got a ton
- 0:42Speaker 1: of PT playing time under his belt. I mean I
- 0:45Speaker 1: just saw him play in Start Well last year. Although
- 0:49Speaker 1: he's got a ton of playing time and games under
- 0:52Speaker 1: his belt. Uh, but he did miss the spring. Do
- 0:57Speaker 1: you think he and Lane will be able to They'll
- 0:59Speaker 1: have about party practices before week one. Do you think
- 1:03Speaker 1: that'll be enough time for them to get on the
- 1:04Speaker 1: same page and get rolling might be?
- 1:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I really do. I do think it's more or
- 1:12Speaker 2: less for me. The timing with receivers that he really
- 1:17Speaker 2: hasn't thrown a lot too. One thing with Sam. You know,
- 1:22Speaker 2: he works out on his own, he gets receivers to
- 1:25Speaker 2: work with him, and so he's become the leader in
- 1:28Speaker 2: that way. But I think the timing part is always
- 1:32Speaker 2: something when you don't have the spring to have worked
- 1:37Speaker 2: with him, that's in question. Him learning Kiffin's system. I
- 1:43Speaker 2: think he can pick that up pretty quickly. You think
- 1:47Speaker 2: about Trinidad Chamblis last year. He came in late in
- 1:51Speaker 2: the process. You know, he quickly picked it up. So
- 1:56Speaker 2: I think the system part won't be the issue. I
- 2:01Speaker 2: think it'll be early on getting the timing down with
- 2:07Speaker 2: his receivers and tight ends more than anything. And he's
- 2:12Speaker 2: got one of the most lethal weapons in college football
- 2:17Speaker 2: at tight end and treid As Green, So I think
- 2:21Speaker 2: that that's gonna work out really well for LSU. Question
- 2:26Speaker 2: marks for me aren't on offense for Lshoe. They're much
- 2:31Speaker 2: more so on defense.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Okay, Mike Nttillier WWL Radio for our listeners, Kivin did
- 2:40Speaker 1: retain Baker and the defensive staff, which is a good thing.
- 2:44Speaker 1: But Mike has some question marks on the defensive side
- 2:48Speaker 1: of the ball for LSU. Let's go over those again. Mike,
- 2:52Speaker 1: what are those question marks?
- 2:56Speaker 2: It's along the defensive line more than anything else. She's
- 3:00Speaker 2: gonna be playing a lot of young guys. They hit
- 3:03Speaker 2: big in the recruiting cycle on four key freshman players.
- 3:10Speaker 2: But okay, that's a difference between playing high school football
- 3:15Speaker 2: in the college football game. You're an eighteen year old
- 3:19Speaker 2: guy going up against twenty two and twenty three year
- 3:22Speaker 2: old young men. That's a big difference. You know, you
- 3:27Speaker 2: get all the geniuses like I do. I ain't no
- 3:29Speaker 2: difference between playing high school ball and college ball. Yeah,
- 3:34Speaker 2: until your ass is on the field. Then you find
- 3:37Speaker 2: out real quick that's a big difference in playing that,
- 3:41Speaker 2: especially in the trenches. And so that to me is
- 3:46Speaker 2: a big question mark. LSU does not have a lot
- 3:51Speaker 2: of depth up front along that defensive line, and it's
- 3:57Speaker 2: really how quickly, too, can you get a pass rush.
- 4:02Speaker 2: LSU has sporadically gotten people that can put pressure on
- 4:06Speaker 2: the quarterback. Can Jordan Ross and human Kneeling be those guys?
- 4:15Speaker 2: It makes the secondary's job a lot easier when you
- 4:20Speaker 2: got pressure. And I always believe that nothing wins games
- 4:25Speaker 2: more in the fourth quarter than a pass rush. Nothing,
- 4:29Speaker 2: And so that that's still to me a major issue,
- 4:34Speaker 2: a question mark. I should say for Relashu the anterior
- 4:39Speaker 2: defensive line and having to play a lot of younger
- 4:43Speaker 2: guys and can human meeling and Ross be the guy
- 4:52Speaker 2: coming off the edge to give you that pass rush.
- 4:56Speaker 2: We saw it in Spurts in the spring with both
- 4:59Speaker 2: of them. Can they be consistent with it? That to
- 5:03Speaker 2: me is the big key for l Shoe this year.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Going back to it. What LSU you had remembered them
- 5:12Speaker 2: for for years was their ability to run the ball
- 5:17Speaker 2: and slam the door on stopping to run. They've done
- 5:21Speaker 2: neither the last three to four years. The final year
- 5:27Speaker 2: of Jaden Daniels was all masked because of the fact
- 5:32Speaker 2: Daniels was so good be scared of but Jesus Odi
- 5:35Speaker 2: every time he took off running. But it wasn't like
- 5:39Speaker 2: they could really consistently run the football, And so that
- 5:44Speaker 2: I think will improve under Kiffin. You look at these
- 5:47Speaker 2: teams that Ole miss They've always run the football pretty
- 5:50Speaker 2: well and really well at times. That'll get better. But
- 5:57Speaker 2: I got to see it up front for LSU defense
- 6:00Speaker 2: line wise, their linebackers are really good and they have
- 6:03Speaker 2: some depth. There's sort of paper thin at corner though
- 6:08Speaker 2: they're starters and number three guys is really good and
- 6:13Speaker 2: they're strong at the safety position, but upfront that that's
- 6:18Speaker 2: some question marks. And if you're gonna get beat, that's
- 6:21Speaker 2: where you're gonna get beat. That. If I'm will Miss
- 6:24Speaker 2: in game three, I'm going to run the football at
- 6:27Speaker 2: them and prove that they can stop the run. I'm
- 6:30Speaker 2: a running with lacing and and prove to me that
- 6:34Speaker 2: you can stop the run, because it's been a question
- 6:38Speaker 2: mark the last few years.
- 6:39Speaker 1: All right, So so Levitt's cleared, He's good to go. Uh,
- 6:45Speaker 1: Mike feels good about the LSU offense and it sounds
- 6:49Speaker 1: like the second third level of the LSU defense. But
- 6:52Speaker 1: what are they going to have on the defense? They
- 6:54Speaker 1: got talent, but a lot of them are young and inexperience.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Game three, they'll go against Triniday and Lacy and Ole
- 7:02Speaker 1: Miss and should be one hell of a game. Could
- 7:05Speaker 1: be one of the better college football as far as
- 7:08Speaker 1: hype and all that. Nothing will match it just because
- 7:10Speaker 1: of Lane and everything that played out, But could be
- 7:14Speaker 1: one of the best games of the season, which will
- 7:16Speaker 1: be awesome. He's Mike Natilier WWL Radio TV New Orleans.
- 7:20Speaker 1: He joins us on one oh five None the Zone ESPN.
- 7:23Speaker 1: We're powered by sound and communications for your next video wall.
- 7:27Speaker 1: All right, So mikey, what about Charlie Weist Junior. So
- 7:32Speaker 1: you know, there are so many guys that are under
- 7:35Speaker 1: unbelievable head coaches who also are specialized on that side
- 7:40Speaker 1: of the ball, that get a lot of pub but
- 7:42Speaker 1: really aren't that good. Well, for example, under Belichick, Romeo
- 7:46Speaker 1: Crenell and Charlie Whis Senior were supposed to be amazing
- 7:49Speaker 1: and then they get out from under the nest and
- 7:51Speaker 1: it doesn't work out. We saw that with some guys
- 7:53Speaker 1: under Saban. Charlie Weiss Junior may be a little bit
- 7:57Speaker 1: different here, Mike. He may actually even though Lane casts
- 8:02Speaker 1: a shadow over him because Lane is the play caller,
- 8:05Speaker 1: it kind of looks like Weiss Junior may may have
- 8:08Speaker 1: some stuff to him and maybe a real valuable piece
- 8:11Speaker 1: of the puzzle. Is that the way you see.
- 8:13Speaker 2: It, Mike, Yeah, I really do. I did a national
- 8:17Speaker 2: show yesterday morning and it was something that was brought
- 8:22Speaker 2: up to me, and my feeling is Weiss is going
- 8:25Speaker 2: to be kind of one and done at LSU. I
- 8:28Speaker 2: think he can propel himself into being a head coach
- 8:31Speaker 2: at the collegiate level. He's I think he's that good.
- 8:35Speaker 2: He relates really well to players. We've heard that from
- 8:38Speaker 2: people at Ole Miss from people that he's dealt with
- 8:43Speaker 2: at LSU. Excellent recruiter. Again, there's some genetics there, and
- 8:50Speaker 2: so I think he's a huge piece of a puzzle
- 8:54Speaker 2: here because you always like even the Lane I think
- 8:58Speaker 2: sees the game differently. I remember this was probably October
- 9:03Speaker 2: of last year and I got coach Ojean to come
- 9:08Speaker 2: on the show with us on WWL and I asked
- 9:11Speaker 2: him about Lane. He was like, Mike, I've been around
- 9:14Speaker 2: a lot of really good coaches in my time, but
- 9:18Speaker 2: nobody saw the game like Lane does. Because he said,
- 9:22Speaker 2: you know, as for me, I'm an old line coach.
- 9:26Speaker 2: You know, I see what's going on up front, offensive,
- 9:29Speaker 2: defensive line. But he says, you know, with Lane, you
- 9:33Speaker 2: can talk to him about something. He sees all twenty two,
- 9:38Speaker 2: all twenty two out on the field. At the same time,
- 9:40Speaker 2: he said, just amazing. He said, I've never been around
- 9:43Speaker 2: anybody that could do that like that. And you know,
- 9:45Speaker 2: he coached with you know, Pete Carroll and Jimmy Johnson
- 9:49Speaker 2: and you can kind of go on, you know, Sean Payton,
- 9:53Speaker 2: all those guys, and he was like just amazing how
- 9:56Speaker 2: he can see breakdowns and try to catch you where
- 10:02Speaker 2: you you're very vulnerable on the defensive side the football.
- 10:07Speaker 2: And but I think Charlie has learned a lot of
- 10:10Speaker 2: that from from Lane Kiffin and the fact that Lane
- 10:14Speaker 2: would trust him, I think is goes to show what
- 10:18Speaker 2: Lane thinks of Charlie Whisse junior. So I think if
- 10:21Speaker 2: they have the success that I think that they don't
- 10:23Speaker 2: have this year, then Weiss can propel this to being
- 10:27Speaker 2: a head coach in college football. And he's already was
- 10:32Speaker 2: looked at strongly by a number of NFL teams to
- 10:35Speaker 2: come in. You know, oh, that's right, he said, no,
- 10:39Speaker 2: toned him down down.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I forgot about that. Mike d and Dan Ellis they
- 10:47Speaker 1: they they're paying him like two and a half million
- 10:50Speaker 1: dollars a year or something to be the OC show.
- 10:52Speaker 2: That's pretty good. That's pretty good, man, they are. That's
- 10:57Speaker 2: pretty good to get paid that as an assistant. But yeah,
- 11:00Speaker 2: he's going to have opportunities. He's definitely going to have
- 11:03Speaker 2: opportunities as a head coach at the college level or
- 11:07Speaker 2: at the NFL level as an offensive coordinator, quarterback coach,
- 11:13Speaker 2: and so I think he's somebody, especially early on. And
- 11:20Speaker 2: I think sometimes we overblow this about so many new
- 11:26Speaker 2: players on every team and about man, look what happened
- 11:30Speaker 2: at l s U with all the changes and transfer
- 11:33Speaker 2: portal guys. But couldn't you say that about virtually every
- 11:37Speaker 2: team in college football that you have all these changes happening,
- 11:43Speaker 2: either you losing them to the NFL draft or graduation
- 11:48Speaker 2: or transfer portal, some disappointments, and you're constantly changing. It's
- 11:55Speaker 2: an evolving league, to be honest with you, and it's
- 12:01Speaker 2: just not La shoot, it's all over now. The major
- 12:04Speaker 2: turnover for LSU was that wide receiver and along the
- 12:10Speaker 2: offensive line, massive turnover there. How quickly all that can
- 12:15Speaker 2: come together, we'll see. But there's talent, Here's a lot
- 12:20Speaker 2: of talent. And you know, there is no preseason or
- 12:26Speaker 2: no inner squad scrimmage. Eventually we might see that one day,
- 12:31Speaker 2: you know, but in college football they could sell it.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Believe me, they would be doing it. But how quickly
- 12:39Speaker 2: that can come together? For alow? Shoot, I think the
- 12:41Speaker 2: month of September is one to watch because of you know,
- 12:46Speaker 2: you start off against Clemson, who they aren't as good
- 12:50Speaker 2: as maybe we've seen in years past, but they still
- 12:52Speaker 2: got some talent there. Then you play Louisiana Tech and
- 12:56Speaker 2: then it's Old Miss. And then the week afterwards you
- 12:58Speaker 2: play Texas A and M team that has had your
- 13:02Speaker 2: number the last two years. And LSU has had leagues
- 13:07Speaker 2: at halftime for both games, and they got the still
- 13:10Speaker 2: kicked out of him in the second half against A
- 13:13Speaker 2: and M. But look at ol Miss okay and the
- 13:17Speaker 2: first two games they got through that. And then they
- 13:19Speaker 2: play LSU, but then a sneaky game afterwards Florida Yes
- 13:26Speaker 2: with John somemmraw And I keep telling people not because
- 13:31Speaker 2: I did this show with him for years when he
- 13:33Speaker 2: was at plane here and John some ara all and
- 13:37Speaker 2: he knows his stuff and he can recruit. He'll squeeze
- 13:41Speaker 2: every bit of vitamin C he can out of the orange.
- 13:44Speaker 2: That's a tricky game for Ole Miss absolutely, And one
- 13:52Speaker 2: thing for sure, I know he's going to sell this man.
- 13:56Speaker 2: All this hype about LSU Ole Miss man, they disrespect
- 14:01Speaker 2: you know, they don't think we can hang with them,
- 14:04Speaker 2: and emotionally, to get a team up back to back
- 14:07Speaker 2: weeks like that is gonna be tough. Same thing for
- 14:11Speaker 2: Kiffin having to play A and M, even though you
- 14:14Speaker 2: got them at Tiger Stadium. That's gonna be a really,
- 14:18Speaker 2: really tough game for LSU. And I don't think A
- 14:23Speaker 2: and M is as good as they were a year ago,
- 14:26Speaker 2: but still a really good football team. And sometimes it's
- 14:30Speaker 2: not who you played, but when you play.
- 14:33Speaker 1: That's that's exactly right. Mike Detillier, LSU Insider WWL Radio
- 14:39Speaker 1: on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest Line. You're listening to
- 14:42Speaker 1: one oh five None the Zone ESPN. We had talked
- 14:45Speaker 1: about that last week. Mike makes a great point on
- 14:48Speaker 1: the LSU two. LSU and ole Miss will come out
- 14:51Speaker 1: of those games with brutal games. Ole Miss has to
- 14:54Speaker 1: go to Florida and then LSU has to host A
- 14:58Speaker 1: and M after all all the hype going into September nineteenth,
- 15:02Speaker 1: and how physical a game that will be both emotionally,
- 15:06Speaker 1: physically and mentally, and those are things, those are things
- 15:10Speaker 1: to watch, you know, Mike, I wouldn't be surprised if
- 15:16Speaker 1: y'all if LSU pulls away from Clemson in the in
- 15:21Speaker 1: the second half. Once Kiffen and Levitt and everybody kind
- 15:25Speaker 1: of gets a few series in the first half under
- 15:27Speaker 1: their belt and their feet on the ground. I wouldn't
- 15:31Speaker 1: be surprised if Lsu and Baker and Kiffen put the
- 15:36Speaker 1: hammer down on on Dabbo. Could you see that happen.
- 15:41Speaker 2: I think he's gonna try. If I know Kiffen, I
- 15:44Speaker 2: think he's gonna try. Yeah, that kind of a statement.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Deal about Hey, y'all talked about this and that in
- 15:52Speaker 2: the offseason. I think if he has an opportunity, he will.
- 15:57Speaker 2: And one of the things came out of the spring
- 16:00Speaker 2: that surprised me, and he talked about three guys in particular.
- 16:06Speaker 2: One was trade As Green. You could understand that you
- 16:09Speaker 2: got a six foot seven tight end that can play
- 16:11Speaker 2: like he can. And ty Benafield, the transfer safety from
- 16:19Speaker 2: Boise State. Such a good open field tackle when you
- 16:23Speaker 2: watch him, how good he can play centerfield. He can
- 16:26Speaker 2: also play up front against the run. And then Jordan Seaton,
- 16:30Speaker 2: the big left tackle. But the other guy he brought
- 16:34Speaker 2: up quite a bit was Dylan Jones, the running back
- 16:39Speaker 2: transfer from Wisconsin, and at the end of spring, Dylan
- 16:44Speaker 2: Jones was running with the first team unit at running
- 16:48Speaker 2: back over Harlem Barry and Kayden Doom Okay now He's
- 16:54Speaker 2: built differently because he's a kind of a sharp, stocky guy,
- 16:58Speaker 2: almost a hammer back. Where you know Harlem is the speed,
- 17:04Speaker 2: quickness back and catching the ball coming out of the backfield.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Cayden is a little bit of a combo back. But man,
- 17:13Speaker 2: I think if they have an opportunity late in the game,
- 17:17Speaker 2: I think he would try to put something on but
- 17:20Speaker 2: ruing it, not necessarily throwing it. I think he wants
- 17:25Speaker 2: to make a statement that you know, it's just more
- 17:28Speaker 2: than just pitch and catch with us, that we're going
- 17:31Speaker 2: to be a very physical team. And he brought this
- 17:34Speaker 2: up numerous times, the two things over and over. The
- 17:38Speaker 2: physicality part of this game. You got to show it
- 17:42Speaker 2: and earn it, to earn that monocle of being a
- 17:46Speaker 2: physical team. The other thing he brought up was about
- 17:50Speaker 2: if you want to see changes in college football, look
- 17:54Speaker 2: at the NFL. He said, they do it first and
- 17:57Speaker 2: then recopy it. Think about changes in the NFL today
- 18:03Speaker 2: so much twelve thirteen personnel, two tight ends, three tight
- 18:07Speaker 2: ends you see in the NFL today that you know
- 18:11Speaker 2: years ago, if you saw two tight ends on the field,
- 18:14Speaker 2: it was a third yarn. Now use those tight ends
- 18:20Speaker 2: as receivers, and you saw what McVeigh did last year
- 18:23Speaker 2: with the thirteen person The other part was the safety play,
- 18:31Speaker 2: what Nick him and Warry did for Seattle and their
- 18:35Speaker 2: ability to use him up front against the run in
- 18:38Speaker 2: that sharp zone coverage part of the field. You know,
- 18:42Speaker 2: he's a big, strong safety. You can use him a
- 18:45Speaker 2: lot of different ways. And he said that not once,
- 18:50Speaker 2: not twice, three times about the physical part you have
- 18:55Speaker 2: to earn it, and secondly about look at the changes
- 18:59Speaker 2: in the NFL. Well, and that's what's happening in college football.
- 19:04Speaker 2: LSU has never been known for twelve personnel. They did
- 19:10Speaker 2: it with less, but it was the run the ball.
- 19:13Speaker 2: I think you're going to see that with LSU this
- 19:15Speaker 2: year with twelve personnel and also with ty Binnifield using
- 19:21Speaker 2: him in the same role as what we saw Seattle
- 19:25Speaker 2: use Nickim and Worey. He said it. He didn't come
- 19:29Speaker 2: out and tell you how he was going to do it,
- 19:32Speaker 2: but in.
- 19:32Speaker 1: The Honey Badger podcast he basically said it, right, Yeah.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that is something that you can see more and
- 19:40Speaker 2: more of. And I think he's right. You will see
- 19:43Speaker 2: more and more teams in the in college football using
- 19:47Speaker 2: that because now you can go out and find the
- 19:50Speaker 2: six foot four six' five tight end that's a hybrid
- 19:54Speaker 2: today he's really a humbo, player like part wide. Receiver
- 20:00Speaker 2: you got those, guys, Man i'll see them every year
- 20:02Speaker 2: at all the. Camps and we have our final One
- 20:05Speaker 2: friday here At antibula At Nickels. State last, year this
- 20:11Speaker 2: was five years. AGO i did the numbers last. Night
- 20:15Speaker 2: we had eighteen guys that WOULD i would turn them
- 20:19Speaker 2: as tight ends this year signed up and it's not
- 20:23Speaker 2: all the numbers are all. In we have thirty nine tight.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Ends that's a big jump at one. Position and we
- 20:32Speaker 2: see it in the high school. Ranks and because they're,
- 20:35Speaker 2: there you can you're going to get them into the college.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Ranks and then from the colleges they go to the.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Froze AND i talked to one of. Them he came
- 20:45Speaker 2: To louisiana line. Camp he was trying to better his,
- 20:47Speaker 2: blocking and you know it's. Usual he six for he's
- 20:52Speaker 2: two hundred and eighteen. Pounds so you play, defense, Sun, no,
- 20:56Speaker 2: Coach i'm a tight, end never Played. No, wow what
- 21:02Speaker 2: you've got to be kidding, me? Dude he was, like oh,
- 21:04Speaker 2: no oh, no he, SAID i just catched the. Ball
- 21:08Speaker 2: so it is what's happening across the football landscape.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Today, wow, okay all, right we'll leave it. THERE i
- 21:19Speaker 1: had some other questions THAT i wanted to, ask but with, well,
- 21:22Speaker 1: uh we'll do this next. Week levitt's. Cleared, uh he's
- 21:27Speaker 1: played a ton of. FOOTBALL i think he And lane
- 21:30Speaker 1: can get on the same. Page. REALLY i mean they're
- 21:33Speaker 1: already working together like you can on a daily, basis
- 21:36Speaker 1: and he's been studying for months and so. On but
- 21:40Speaker 1: and this kid's probably twenty three years old at this.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Point So i'm expecting a big year From levit because
- 21:46Speaker 1: he'll have three times more talent around him than he
