- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Hi, I'm Kate Dresden, and welcome to Kate's Devotional Podcast.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: I drop my podcast every Wednesday.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: It's always a five minute or less devotional to bring you encouragement as we try
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: to live our lives according to the Bible.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: So glad you're here.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Have you ever been to a wedding where the couple asked their guests to write out
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: their best marital advice,
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: like on a note card or something?
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Well, I was at a wedding recently where they asked us to do that, and it gave me an idea.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I wondered what advice would seasoned Christians
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: give to someone who's just beginning their Christian journey?
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: So I asked my Substack readers, and I was blown away by all the responses.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: I could tell each person was speaking from their heart.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: They were drawing from their own experience.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: I know they wanted to encourage the new believers out there.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: So even though the advice is for new believers, I think we all can benefit from the experience of others.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I know I got a lot out of it.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: this is only a five-minute podcast,
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: so I'll have to summarize their advice instead of being able to read each response.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: But we'll start off the top.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Number one, they said study the Bible.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Studying, not just reading, is imperative to your growth as a Christian.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: And a good place to begin would be the Gospels, like Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: People also mention Romans is another good book for beginners.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: And it's important to establish a daily devotional routine.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Number two, a lot of people talked about prayer.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Part of building a relationship with God is talking to him.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: They said prayers don't have to be fancy.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: He hears and understands what's in our hearts.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: We also need to ask for wisdom and understanding.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: That was an important part of their advice to fight our battles on our knees.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: And number three,
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Join a Bible-believing church.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Many people mention this too.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: A church doesn't exist for your entertainment or amusement.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: A church must stand for and against what is taught in Scripture.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So find a church where you will learn how to study and understand the Bible.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: And remember, a pastor is only human and will make mistakes.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: It's important not to put them on a pedestal and test their instruction against the Bible.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: because there are many false teachers leading our churches today.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Number four, many people said, find a mentor.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Ask a seasoned Christian to work with you.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: If you don't know of someone, ask your pastor or deacon to make a suggestion.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: And number five is kind of a miscellaneous category.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: These are just some of the extra things that people said.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Following and serving God is a daily choice.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: god has a plan for you everything doesn't happen overnight be patient mistakes will
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: happen cooperate with god as he reshapes your life problems do not disappear when
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: you become a christian life will not become easy so don't give up here's some more
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: advice they gave god is the only one who won't let you down so don't put all your
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: hope in another christian
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: your pastor, or the institution of the church, because they're all going to disappoint at some point.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Leave friends who will inhibit your growth and sinful habits behind.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: The Lord will guide you in this area.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: And they said the enemy is real and will continue to try to discourage and destroy you.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: That's some solid advice, not only for new Christians, but all of us.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: What would you add to the list?
